Is Atrix Screen lame or im wrong? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I Brought the Atrix but i have some doubts about it.
First, its the second time i got and Device with the screen a little bit Yellowish, when compared to the white from the notebook, First was the Ipod touch that compared to my brothers one, looked yellowish, then i compared to an iphone then the iphone looked more yellowish than mine. and now Atrix.. Is this normal?
And I have some problems with colors, i dont know if its Android that has less colors or else
take a look at this screenshot:
can you see the "layers" in the wallpaper? in the Pc Screen it Look perfect. Who guilty for this problem? i dont remember seeying this problem on my ipod.
Thanks

Check to see if there is an option for "high quality drawing" in this launcher. Better, unninstall launcher and see if that happens on stock too.
About the colors, yes, it's yellowish. Many cellphones are, unfortunately. Thats a bit of detail Nokia always gets right and no one notices or talks about it.

Hahah Oi Viamonte, tbm so brasileiro, mas vamos manter o ingles. Ok ill try those methods

Tried the High Resolution Drawing, didnt helped =/ is this normal in other phones like samsung galaxy S2?

The banding is most likely caused by the fact that the Atrix actually has a full 24bit screen and most other phones hop along with 18bit (dithered). On top of that most applications like the Android Gallery only display in 16 bit colour (Moto probably didn't bother to fix it either). Since there's no dithering on the Atrix (as it isn't required) you end up with banding. Just assign the wallpaper using another app which does it directly (there's a few on the market). Or, if you run CM7 you can force dithering the performance menu. Until more 24bit apps come out the CM7 dithering trick is probably the way to go.
The yellowish tinge is likely because most other screens actually fall on the reddish side (especially AMOLED pentile types).

The Atrix screen is beautiful. Try getting the black wallpaper from the market. Some people say movies look bad. People play the wrong movies. Get Moboplayer and a hi res 720 movie. The screen and colors are again beautiful. The only issue with the screen is it is not good in daylight. Set the brightness to 60 or 70....this phone amazes me every day.

[Q] Display sharpness

Hello,
i didn't find any topic regarding the sharpeness of the Optimus One, so i created a new one. Well, i bought this phone for my wife and i'am really suprised about the great quality of this phone. I use myself a Galaxy S and so i'am a little bit spoiled regarding the display. But i have already seen that the sharpness could be better with a 480x320 resolution (e.g. Sony Ericsson X8). The X8 has a better sharpness related to the small texts in the settings menu. So, is there a possiblity to get a better sharpness on the Optimus One?
Sorry to say but you cannot do much.
You can only change system font with something smoother. That's the only thing you can do.
You can't change anything. X8 text looks "sharper" just because of a smaller screen (0,2inch).
I agree with heino81.
Screen quality is rather poor.
The screen of the Galaxy i7500 (oled) was in another league.
It is poor but you can enjoy the speed of the phone + it never runs out of ram !
I miss indeed the i7500's OLED screen. It was excelent, but it was only a nice looking phone, the lack of ram kept it out.

Thanks, I downloaded it (edit - ubuntu 10.10) and it's quite a bit better than the standard font.
However, there are still some anti-aliasing problems (notably with bigger black letters on a white background), which are probably due to the 256k colors of the screen (the right gradations of grey may not be addressable or something like that)
about AA
I personally don't understand the propagation of antialiasing on a low resolution device. It makes the font blurry and causes lots of small input lags when you zoom or scroll. Even on my desktop computer when I first tried windows vista a few years ago, the first thing I did was turning the font smoothing off. Too bad there's no choice for that here.
As far as the sharpness of texts, no, there's really nothing we can do about it. The screen they put in the O1 was not designed to display a lot of pixels, unfortunately.
On my boyfriend's O1, I find that we can't use certain widgets because they look just horrible on his screen (clockr, D3 clock and some other minimalistic widgets that display lines and numbers/letters only).
I suppose it's unfair to the O1 because we're comparing it against high res phones (im using an x10), but LG could've given it a better screen cos it kinda ruins the experience.

Screen Colors Off?

Does anyone eleses yellows and Greens look off esp the yellows they seem to be very dull and off and almost orange
I agree, the market icon look Olive-colored on Atrix 4G

Qhd is not a screen technology, its a resolution.
And the problem with the colors isn't that they're dull or unsaturated compared to a super amoled., that's to be expexted. The problem is that the colors are just wrong compared to just about any screen you want to compare it too, load up some websites on the phone and a well calibrated desktop monitor and you'll easily see the difference.
Compared to my captivate im really happy. That thing made skin tones green or orange.
It has to be reiterated. The oled display technology OVERsaturates the colors. As in, the colors are overly vibrant. The atrix will more accurately display colors.
Ok, saying this again. We (at least I) am not saying this in comparison to a samoled screen, the colors on a regular LCD will obviously never look like that, the colors on the amoled are completely wrong. However that doesn't mean the atrix has them right, just look at the screen compared to a well calibrated computer monitor.

Bumping this to get some attention on this issue.
I'm considering returning my Atrix because of how bad yellows and blues look, compared to OTHER LCDs, not compared to Super AMOLED screens.
I lined up my Captivate, Atrix, iPod Touch 4, and my wife's HTC Evo Shift and fired up Words with Friends on all of them. While it's clear that the Captivate is oversaturated, if you take that out of the equation, the Atrix's colors just look bad compared to the other two LCDs. The yellow tiles look "dirty" like they have a brown or greenish tint to them. The light blues in the tabs on the home screen of Words with Friends look like they have a greenish tint as well.
I've seen a lot of people say that they think it's one of the greatest displays ever, up there on par with the iPhone 4. If that's true, I really hope mine and other people seeing this just have defective models that can be exchanged.
I'm going into my AT&T store sometime tonight or tomorrow in hopes of putting two or more Atrices side by side to compare.
If anyone else seeing this problem could do the same, it would be very helpful. Especially as it seems likely that a random one pulled out in store could have the same defect.
Scott, I have my atrix boxed up ready to go back for the same issues. I went to the at&t store and looked at their 3 demo units, all of them looked the same.
If you go to a verizon store and play with a motorola droid x you'll see that its screen looks the same as well, it's just whatever panel maker motorola is using. People that are saying "It's the greatest screen evar, just as good as the iphone 4" are suffering new gadget love and can't see the flaws. It's not the worst screen ever but it is a definite step down from other manufacturers screens.

I would have to agree, the iphone4 has a pretty good display. It is a bit oversaturated, but does look pleasing to the eye. The iphone is also much smoother when using the pinch to zoom feature. With the Atrix having a dual core processor, I thought it would at least be on par with the iphone, but for some reason it's definitely not as smooth.
Oh well... just my 2 cents.
So I went in to an AT&T store last night and compared my Atrix with their demo unit.
The colors seem a little bit better, but interestingly, the demo unit's display didn't seem as bright as my Atrix, and it may have had slightly higher contrast.
I got one of the associates to look at it and agree that mine had a slight color cast to it. They said they would do a replacement for me if I came back with my paperwork from my online order, so I said I would do that today or Saturday.
I went straight home and compared my Atrix again to my wife's HTC Evo Shift. In doing that, I still felt like the color on her screen was significantly better than on mine, and in seemed better than I remembered the store's demo unit, as well.
So, I think I need to get my phone and her phone both in there, side by side with the demo unit, and see if I could live with the screen if it was exactly the same as the demo unit. I think probably yes, given the other major advantages of this phone (qHD resolution, Tegra 2, 1GB RAM), but as a graphic designer, bad colors are hard for me to take. And colors that are off in the way the Atrix's screen is off are a graver sin to me than oversaturating a la Super AMOLED.
Bottom line, I'm still on the fence. Has anyone else done any other tests?

Wait, so now the iPhone's IPS LCD is oversaturated too? Let's face it: Atrix is weak on colors -thanks to the RGBW PenTile display, where they tried to prolong its life by replacing some Blue tiles with White tiles -which makes colors pale.
It does look great with flesh tones though. Ill give it that.
People who complain about wrong colors have been looking at way oversaturated screens... as a semi advanced photographer, I can agree that the atrix screen is very very good color wise ...

Or they got an Atrix with a defective display, like me. Ony my Atrix, there's no getting around the fact that yellows look dirty and brown, and that certain shades of blue look greenish.

It's me or the yellow is dull ???

Hi,
My new motorola atrix is verry good but I think the yellow is very bad on this phone.
For example the 2nd "o" of google or wood on angry birds is unrealistic, dark, dull...
Am I alone in thinking this ?
The problem can be solved by an official rom or other modification ?
Thank you.
Looks OK to me?
Compared next to my N900 (of which I think has an amazing screen too)

Yeah I agree, all the yellows look a little green to me. When I got this bad boy I got Fruit Ninja on it and some of the fruits looked very unripe lol
Yellows are dull and washed out on the Pentile display. period. it's something we all have to live with (and most have), however those who try and say it doesn't exist are just lying to themselves. Highest brightness makes it a little more vivid, but nowhere near a normal LCD display.
You don't notice after using it for a while, I am willing to make the trade off for the bump in resolution.
When you go to another display you quickly remember what its supposed to look like though.

Yes, you are right, the colors may vary between different screens but I tried acer liquid, nintendo ds, dingoo, my lcd computer and tv screens and for me the atrix has stranges colors.
Fortunately I am not alone in thinking this

As much as I love the high resolution--it is AMAZING for small text--I am more bothered by the PenTile layout than I expected from reviews. I don't know about other people or how close they hold the phone to their eyes, but I can see the hatching pretty clearly in normal use on a white background. I mean, it's not HORRIBLE, but it makes the whites feel a lot less white than they do on the RGB AMOLED screens I've used. I think I need a Tab 7.7 so I can have the resolution without the PenTile tradeoffs. -_-

It's not a matter of color reproduction; it's the physical subpixels that look a bit off. It's a subtle diagonal hatching pattern that is visible regardless of brightness. It's not horribly obvious at normal distances but I can see it. Honestly it isn't that much worse than being able to see the square pattern around individual pixels on my GS2--I was just hoping at this resolution/pixel density I wouldn't be able to see it at all.
Color reproduction isn't too bad. It's slightly different from my GS2 but I am not that picky about it, since I don't do serious photography or other art. AMOLED screens all have oversaturated colors anyway.

It's sort of like there is an overlay of tiny black dots in a diagonal pattern. As I mention above it isn't obvious especially at more than a foot or so away, but it is visible.

The screen looks fine to me. People freak out when they find out a screen is Pentile, but this isn't a Motorola pentile screen we're looking at. I'm assuming that there's a technical limitation/challenge with making Super Amoled Plus displays bigger than 4.3" or I'm sure Sammy would be using them in all of their phones. Personally, I'm enjoying the higher resolution. Can you imagine a screen this size at 800X480? It would be worse than the HTC Titan.

I hope it doesn't seem like I'm freaking out.
I'm saying this having used the phone a bit; I have it sitting right here. No argument here, it is way better than the PenTile on the RAZR or any other Moto phone I've used. And yes, I'm pretty sure you're right about the technical limitations preventing proper RGB layouts for this resolution/size, probably something to do with how small they can physically make subpixels, since it is clearly possible to have a 1280x800 Super AMOLED+ display in a 7.7" form factor. I ALSO agree that a screen this large would be awful at 800x480, and I definitely prefer the PenTile 1280x800 over RGB 800x480 at this size. I am definitely NOT saying the screen is bad, but I am disappointed because it isn't as good as I hoped it would be.
So we mostly agree. I am just more irritable I guess.

How does the screen work in direct sunlight? I am not wanting to watch a movie, but need it when working outside to read e-mail and use the phone. On my current HTC Tilt 2 I have to find shade to see anything on my screen. I have read that the Super Amoled+ screens are better. I am hoping this will work where I do not have to put on my reading glasses.
One thing is for sure, the screen definitely is an attention grabber. All of my co-workers were amazed and how sharp and clear the screen was.

I think it's utter nonsense. Nobody else has mentioned it in their reviews (just the contrary actually) and I've never seen it myself on any of the videos.
I've seen a video where they compare the screen of the Xperia S and (I think) the Galaxy Nexus, and it showed all the different colour gradients, and the Xperia S was miles better. I can't find it now that I'm looking for it though!

Thanks for sharing, it was good and I liked the shots very much. Nice videos.
I had color banding on both Nexus 1 and sgs2, obviously with wallpapers having blue sky.
It was a software bug because as I said with ''wallpaper set and save'' the banding disapeared on N1, on sgs2 it was a custom rom that solved it.
The key problem is that some versions of stock ''Gallery'' are coming with 65k colors instead of 16M. Dunno why they are still doing this mistake...
I just got the Xperia S and no pictures of mine has color banding or other issues like my OLD nexus

I recently replaced my Xperia S due to yellow tint issue. This new one has no yellow tint but has colour banding issue on some things like on the front page of the XDA app. Will post pics if peple wanna see it.
Mine is being repaired at the moment for the yellow tint issue as well. I have a loaner HTC wildfire s for the moment. The xda app splash screen just is banded. It's exactly the same on this phone.
Some other apps seem to have a little color banding, but imho it's usually just because they are optimized for lower resolution devices. The situation will propably change a bit since more devices with hd screens are being released.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire S A510e using XDA
I checked out the XDA app's slash screen, and holy smokes that is some serious banding. But that's not the fault of the phone, as I presume the image is actually banded like RiotRick says.
Places I found banding is for example on the News and Weather app on the tabs, the gradients of gray are clearly visible. On my old HTC Hero it is not noticeable in the 65k colours.
But I'm skeptical to push the fault on the screen though - I'd say it's far more likely that the app itself using images that weren't rendered for 16M colours and the xhdpi. I can safely say that it DOES NOT colour band the static timescape wallpapers (it is silky smooth), so just by that I do not think the screen or software is at fault.
Alien987, if you really are on the fence due to screen deal breakers, I would be more concerned of the colour renditions of the LCD screen at off-center viewing angles. Personally, it doesn't bother me as I'd be looking at it from the center when I use it, but my cousin pointed it out when she was trying to watch the game I was playing when she was sitting beside me (she uses an iphone 4, so I guess she is acute to how nice screens look? =S) (oops sorry I went sorta off-topic)
To be clear the screen on the Xperia S exhibits no colour banding with images 16bit and over just like most other screen types, the reviewer clearly doesn't know what they are talking about and goes into zero depth to try and justify the claim.
Colour banding only happens when the on screen image is of a lower gradient then say 16bit, most images in applications deliberately have a lower gradient (8bit) for lower memory usage in their apps so u will see this banding since a lower colour pallet is used.
Mobile screens these days even pentile, don't have an issue with colour banding as they are of a high quality.
Check a 24bit image on the screen and you will see zero colour banding in all colours.
