[Q] TouchPad Screen DPI? - TouchPad General

Any know the dpi of the touchpads screen? cant get info on it anywhere

1024x768 over 9.7 inches comes out to 131.96 DPI.

Sounds rather odd....

Not really, its the EXACT screen dimensions as the iPad(2). Its a 4:3 1024x768 9.7" screen.

looks like 131 is correct.
*oh, and why the hell is this stickied... all these threads should be linked to in a 'read first sticky' thread... this is obscene how many god damn stickies there are... Whatever mod is doing this is going overboard.

It's the same screen as the ipad. Same manufacturer as well (LG). All intensive purposes, it is the same screen.

I think the idea is to coral all the posts into a manageable order for later redistribution.
just like the fire sale , this could get ugly and disorganized fast.

Brightless slider in the top-right menu. Or were you referring to it on full brightness (I don't have an iPad to compare to)?

So your telling me if the screen breaks, Just replace with an iPad screen+digitizer? Or am I clutching at parts?

if the screen is similar to the ipad, why does it seem so low quality?
I was on my new one all night, and I cant get over the poor quality of display.
I was just browsing, blogging and it just looks so bad compared to my work ipad or the playbook I'm currently demo'ing.
could it be the browser, websites, or is there a patch I need? Really making me question my purchase.

I think people are confusing DPI with PPI. PPI is pixels per inch, which is the 131 being tossed out. DPI is how the screen is seen by software. Dont know what it is for the touchpad, but figured I'd try and clear some confusion.

No, if you put the TP side by side with the iPad 2 (hell, with the original iPad), you can notice a BIG difference in the display quality. I think that is the way the software handles the screen. Colors do look WAY sharper and crisper on the ipad vs the TP.

Its the exact same lg screen from the ipad 2, hell you could take the ipad 2 screen out and put it in the touchpad.. android port may fix it if not we'll see some voodoo colors.

I did some lookin:
TP and iPad 1 use LP097X02-SLA1
iPad 2 uses LP097X02-SLN1
Don't know what the differences are. I don't know why the touchpad screen isn't as bright as the ipad either. (Perhaps the touchpad software simply doesn't allow it to go that high? Perhaps in that case, an android release could? Though I've heard many complain that the ipad is blindingly bright.)
Interestingly enough, samsung is coming out with a 10.1" retina touch display. Will apple get their hands on it? Probably not, actually:
http://www.tipb.com/2011/05/13/sams...olution-display-paving-retina-display-ipad-3/

I think there must be differences between displays. I've found mine to be very bright. I leave the brightness slider around 30% and find that's very bright, even a bit too bright when using in a darkened room.
I find the colours aren't particularly vibrant in general use, but the they are in the Angry Birds loading screen, so I'd guess that there's some kind of tone down colour profile set in the OS somewhere.

not exactly I'd think. While they use the same screen, they don't use the same bezel dimensions IIRC. Bezel is part of the screen, so buying the slightly different iPad one wouldn't work I don't think.

Fist Impressions with Radar/WP7

I just got my Radar in the mail today and I have to say, my first impressions are very good. I'm coming from Android so when I saw the kind of dated specs for this phone, I was a little hesitant. But just like the all the reviews say, this phone is buttery smooth with plenty of power. You can't judge this phone against Android cause it's two different OS's. Windows doesn't need the horsepower that Android needs and the software integration with the hardware is tight and beautiful.
Love the hardware as well. Coming from a Galaxy S, I was happy with the performance but the phone was just too cheap and plasticy for me to ever REALLY love it's looks. The weight and unibody construction on this phone is awesome and I love it.
The unremovable battery might have been a deal breaker for me with a high end Android phone as I had an extra battery for my Galaxy S. But all the reviews said this phone gets well over a day of with moderate use so I'm not sweating that anymore.
NO LIKE::: There's not much I don't like and it's gonna take me a little longer than a few hours to get used to this phone. However, there is one thing about this OS that is bothering me. Font size!! Lets start with the browser....No setting in the browser to make the webpage larger like in android. And when you try to zoom in, the text doesn't re-flow. Also, font size in the people section like in your twitter feed is small as well. I don't have the best eyes but they're already starting to hurt. This complaint is pretty minor but in a way, it's major as well. If you get tired of using certain features on your phone cause it makes your eyes hurt, then that's kinda of a problem.
Overall though, love this phone and I'm happy with the purchase.
Oh and one more thing to add. The call quality isn't very good at all.
The text reflows if you double tap. It's by design.

Yes but only a little bit. The text still isn't large enough for me to comfortably read, at least for a long time. I'm talking about pinching and zooming as close as you want and the words re-wrap to fit the screen like in Android, so you don't have to scroll back and forth. Other than that, I'm happy with the browser. I think it's a smoother experience on WP7.
And honestly, my complaint above about small font throughout the OS is starting to get to me even more. The things I do most on a phone are taking in info, like browsing my favorite sites, Twitter, Facebook, and RSS. And all these processes hurt my eyes after a while. Example, look at the Facebook app. The font is small cause the top of the screen is taken up by FACEBOOK and then the tittle of the page like MOST RECENT. I actually love the facebook app, it's just the small font I hate. I wish I had a bigger phone cause I think it would be Ok if it was a 4.3 inch screen or so.
In the end, I hate to say it cause I love this OS but I think i'm gonna sell this phone. I'll just have to wait until a bigger phone comes out or Microsoft makes it an option to make the font bigger everywhere. It sucks cause this OS is so much more beautiful and cohesive than anything else. I'm a big fan, but my eyes aren't letting me enjoy the experience. I hope to be back to WP7 soon.

and that screen was tiny haha. here is what everyone is saying.
"The HTC Titan is quite large thanks to its 4.7-inch display. We were slightly disappointed to find that the resolution for this LCD is standard WVGA–480 x 800 pixels. This means the dots per inch (dpi) specification will be quite low, and users may be able to make out individual pixels in some situations, which can be unpleasant when reading text. However, it should make viewing videos a joy, especially when sharing the screen with friends."
I would love to check out the phone myself. but dont have $600 to put into one lol.
even if you can see things fine.. why would they put qHD on the sensation and then 720p display on the rezound, etc. but not the titan when it has a even BIGGER screen? that just confuses me xD maybe it has something to do with WP7.
i just got one radar for my wife.... i like the size and the aluminium body.. the camera is good, and takes panorama shots as well..
smoother then my HD7...
I'm coming from the hd7 also. And I find the size of the radar and its screen to be to annoying. Font size is an issue for me as well. The plus? WiFi tethering.
So, is the tethering free? It was so easy to activate and use, but I don't want any surprise charges.

Every negative comment I have heard about the Titan's screen is from people who don't actually own it or have used it and are just speculating. I'll search for more reviews (since I plan to buy the Titan Friday) and see if I can find anything else out.
here are my first impressions of this nice device (in german)
But I've got a question by the way? Is it normal that the alphabetical jumplist in apps menu is missing?
No. That should be there...odd.
According to :
http://www.reddit.com/r/wp7/comments/l9cet/quick_question_about_icon_in_app_jump_list/
You get the letters in the app list when you have more than 45 applications.

The screen!

Is awesome!!! Never had an HD screen before and boy is it cool! I try to look very close, but can barely see the pixels. The colors are also very amazing.
Now the question is can we use a app like voodoo screen tuner and make it even better =p lol

As much as I love the high resolution--it is AMAZING for small text--I am more bothered by the PenTile layout than I expected from reviews. I don't know about other people or how close they hold the phone to their eyes, but I can see the hatching pretty clearly in normal use on a white background. I mean, it's not HORRIBLE, but it makes the whites feel a lot less white than they do on the RGB AMOLED screens I've used. I think I need a Tab 7.7 so I can have the resolution without the PenTile tradeoffs. -_-

I read a review, can't remember which one, that was saying at full brightness the whites were incredibly white and at lower brightness settings it turned bluer. Is that true? Are you at full brightness?

It's not a matter of color reproduction; it's the physical subpixels that look a bit off. It's a subtle diagonal hatching pattern that is visible regardless of brightness. It's not horribly obvious at normal distances but I can see it. Honestly it isn't that much worse than being able to see the square pattern around individual pixels on my GS2--I was just hoping at this resolution/pixel density I wouldn't be able to see it at all.
Color reproduction isn't too bad. It's slightly different from my GS2 but I am not that picky about it, since I don't do serious photography or other art. AMOLED screens all have oversaturated colors anyway.

It's sort of like there is an overlay of tiny black dots in a diagonal pattern. As I mention above it isn't obvious especially at more than a foot or so away, but it is visible.

The screen looks fine to me. People freak out when they find out a screen is Pentile, but this isn't a Motorola pentile screen we're looking at. I'm assuming that there's a technical limitation/challenge with making Super Amoled Plus displays bigger than 4.3" or I'm sure Sammy would be using them in all of their phones. Personally, I'm enjoying the higher resolution. Can you imagine a screen this size at 800X480? It would be worse than the HTC Titan.

I hope it doesn't seem like I'm freaking out.
I'm saying this having used the phone a bit; I have it sitting right here. No argument here, it is way better than the PenTile on the RAZR or any other Moto phone I've used. And yes, I'm pretty sure you're right about the technical limitations preventing proper RGB layouts for this resolution/size, probably something to do with how small they can physically make subpixels, since it is clearly possible to have a 1280x800 Super AMOLED+ display in a 7.7" form factor. I ALSO agree that a screen this large would be awful at 800x480, and I definitely prefer the PenTile 1280x800 over RGB 800x480 at this size. I am definitely NOT saying the screen is bad, but I am disappointed because it isn't as good as I hoped it would be.
So we mostly agree. I am just more irritable I guess.

How does the screen work in direct sunlight? I am not wanting to watch a movie, but need it when working outside to read e-mail and use the phone. On my current HTC Tilt 2 I have to find shade to see anything on my screen. I have read that the Super Amoled+ screens are better. I am hoping this will work where I do not have to put on my reading glasses.
One thing is for sure, the screen definitely is an attention grabber. All of my co-workers were amazed and how sharp and clear the screen was.

what to check on the Nexus 10 to ensure it's perfect

Hey guys, as we know, the very first batch of any device likely will have some flaws. Hopefully this won't happen to the nexus 10. Anyway, Im a very picky consumer so I have to ensure my device is perfect. So I will list some of the things we need to check when the item arrives. feel free to give tips etc..
1/ Check the screen to see there are any dead pixels/ discolored area/ uneven white screen/ yellow or pink spots
2/ Light bleed
3/ any scratch on the body
4/Buttons are all good.
5/ Speakers
All I can think of so far..
also would want to check if the cameras, radios, ports, battery and other such components work properly, along with checking along the seams of the tablet to make sure it is solidly put together.
Microscope... check EVERY pixel.
I also have a few questions. It has to deal with the snap on cover if anyone got those (if they are out). When you unfold the cover does the screen light up like the iPad does with its smart cover. And also can the cover be used as a stand or does it just fall over? And how bad is the lag on Chrome compared to anyone who has used Safari on an iPad. Thanks. I'm hoping to switch from my ipad to the nexus 10!
Add couple more
1. Check GPS
2. Pixel check can be done with https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ossibussoftware.deadpixeltest&hl=en

Well in my case they'd be replacing the screen whether they intended to or not. If I had to, I'd just order a new one, then send the old one back in its place and say I changed my mind. And that just if they didn't want to exchange a clearly defective product. Up to them, but either way I'm going to make it right for myself in the end :good:
With 2560x1600 x3 sub-pixels (=12.288.000 pixels) you will very likely not get a sample without a single defective sub-pixel. Doesn't really matter either, a stuck sub-pixel at 300 DPI resolution is so small that it will be hard to find even if you "know" where it is.
My tab 10.1 and GS3 first batch were flawless. I expect a pretty close to perfect initial batch here as well. This isn't Asus or HTC.

Nothing is for sure but every samsung product ive ever had has been perfect!

It's not only about the company behind the product, it's also about math/probability.
Hint: Try counting the sub-pixels on the Galaxy 10.1 or S3 and compare to the N10.

not really...I guess it's a matter of luck. I bought my S3 in june and after 3 replacements, I got the satisfying one.
One thing concerns me the most is the screen. It's true that it's hard to get a screen without any dead pixels considering the huge amount of pixels. well, I really hope this won't happen since if I ever find out just one single dead pixel, it would turn me off really bad even if I normally can't see it. But you know, it is there... haha

I forgot to include the legendary GS2 as another first batch flawless device. It might be about luck sometimes but generally you can deduce when it is safe to buy a first batch.
I use two methods that I feel pretty good about.
One, like I said, my GS2, tab 10.1, and GS3 were all flawless first batches for me. I realize that using just myself as a sample size is pretty shady statistically but if you look at the posts of complaints of the GS3 in May/June, they are far less than most devices.
Two, we know for a fact that Samsung is not only a manufacturer, but one of the if not the best manufacturer. Sure HTC and Apple are moving away from them, but it is not because of the quality. People trust their factories and manufacturing processes so unless the Nexus 10 uses some fancy new manufacturing process, Samsung already has the wisdom and experience and chances are, they won't need to make many changes to the manufacturing process like others might.

I'm not so sure we should expect the majority of units to have dead pixels. I deal a lot with high resolution 2560x1600 computer monitors and very rarely do I encounter dead/stuck pixels. You're right that they would be harder to notice because of the high pixel density, but I'll use pixel checker and send it back if there's an issue. Just because it's a smaller screen doesn't mathematically necessitate pixel issues. The 13in retina macbook pro has almost the same pixel density and of the few I've tested, none have any pixel issues.

Are you really spending maybe 15-30 minutes (if that's enough) to check each display in a dark room with dark-adapted eyes?
I'm asking that because as an example my Nexus 7 has 1 stuck blue sub-pixel almost smack in the middle of the screen, I know where it is and I still need about 10-20 seconds in a dark room with a (mostly) black screen to find it again - in daylight it's just plainly impossible to locate it. On a Retina/N10/WQXGA display this will be even harder.
It's my personal opinion that a lot of the people posting here how their displays are perfect with zero errors just never see any of their stuck/dark sub-pixels. They're really that hard to find unless you have bad luck and get a completely broken pixel or a cluster of broken sub-pixels in close proximity.

Whatever brings more happiness into your live ...
My personal view on sub-pixel errors is: if I have to search for them to see them ... I don't really care about them.
A full stuck/dark pixel (or anything that catches the eye) is a reason to send the device back though, no doubt about that.

I tend to do that anyway for light bleed... That's my worry. My Nexus 7 has pretty bad light bleed, and i'm okay with that because it's a cheap tablet, but I won't be happy if the Nexus 10 has bleed like that one. I can deal with a minor amount around the edges, but it's really annoying if it extends to the center of the screen, etc.

Not really true. My monitor is 2560x1440 and I promise you, there are no dead pixels. Granted it's 27", and the Nexus is only 10", it may be a little harder to see, but throw up solid color backgrounds and you will probably see it.

Gamma Adjustments

There's been talk about adjusting the gamma levels to increase the black level and get rid of the washed out look. After looking at this chart, what will we be able to make the black's blacker without creating the "crushed" effect I get on my Note??
The attachment is only the test image, not a pic of my screen

I was just searching for a gamma adjustment tool for my nexus 10. I could you point me towards any discussions or hacks you know of please?
Thanks.

Why do you guys think there won't ever be one? That truly disappoints me.
They're skeptics. I think more than a couple devs will find a way to improve this display. It may take a while for this tablet to become popular enough.

We are not skeptics...its based on facts. We have some awesome devs who have looked at the kernal and have stated we more than likely won't have adjustments.
Google could add it to the kernel as an update. That is, if they felt it was necessary. They modified the gamma and grayscale of my nexus one through stock updates. On the galaxy nexus, google didn't do a thing, even though the issues were well documented. Hopefully google addresses this. Its true that so far nobody has been able to access the gamma lookup table. Maybe some of these features can be ported, or maybe these will be added to the kernel as the new exynos chip is in more devices.
Damn being an early adopter. I know for my next tablet I won't make any concessions on the display again. I just saw the kobo arc reader, and its screen was flawless. See it to believe it. And its less than $199 for the 7inch, plus a $20 gift card. Google just rocked all their loyal users by allowing a display with rather mediocre image quality (with the exception of viewing angle) to be put into a premium tablet. It is objectively the worst display out of all the $400 plus tablets. They go bananas on the processor, and drop the ball on the screen. Its obvious this tablet is for developer, not consumer use. Guess I shouldn't have assumed that google would adhere to industry standards as a reference for image quality.
Google should have used the Asus infinity screen. Lower res, but MUCH better in gamma and color.
The Acer a700 has an even nicer screen than the infinity. They should have used that.

no no no
never lower res for me
i love the res and the pixel density on my N10
as for the gamma the gamma line isnt equal
i have just checked and the N10 has a slight higher gamma at lower shades (around 1.8)
and that is not to bad.
as for the higher shades it is around gamma 1.6 and thats worse
so even if we can adjust the gamma we need a tool to get the gamma line equal/straight at 2.2
if we just raise the gamma now the blacks are going to crush with a to high gamma while the whites are going to be correct.
but of course we can get closer to gamma 2.2
we can get gamma 2.2 for the lower shades and around 1.9 to 2.0 for the brighter ones.
that would be just perfect
Edit: as for the colors and colors brightness the N10 is close to reference.
all colors RED/GREEN/BLUE has equal brightness.
that is with this low gamma in count.
also the contrast and blacklevel/whitelevel is close to reference.
the color temp is also close to 6500K and that means that the grayscale is correct (white is white on the N10)
so the ONLY thing that messes up this display from showing a reference picture is the low gamma.
to bad that samsung screwed that one up

I still don't get it, if it isn't at the kernel level how the hell did Google and Samsung calibrate this display? Why is it that we can't tweak it no matter what we do?

Anything higher than full HD on a screen this size is a waste. And you want a source? Check the Dev section.

Wtf dude, go die in a hole. Asus Infinity screen is way more punchy than the Nexus 10. You are an idiot, go to the nearest Walmart and look at the damn display on the infinity. A higher screen resolution does not amount to better colors.
You might be saying those words and doubting others if they have a Nexus 10 by justifying your purchase, but its true that the Infinity, heck, even the TF201 has better colors on them. Be objective dude, screen res is not screen color.

Screen is not bright at all....

I just played with the G3 and when I went through the settings to display, I realized it was maxed out. I backed it down to half and it was damn near dark. On full bright it's not as bright as my S5 on half.
Having to max it will be a huge battery issue...grrrrr!!!!

Get over what? Did I say there was a problem? I am reporting my findings.
I was worried about this, GPad had the same issues and I went back to my trusty N7. Damn
Just to clarify, you can change the brightness level while it still is on auto to change the max brightness. Are you sure it still wasn't on auto? Also, was it warm and possibly overheating and dimming the screen some? It also supposedly won't max out when charging.
I didn't think to check the brightness on the AT&T demo but it seemed bright enough in the brightly lit room. I believe one website speced it out at about the same nits as the DNA which I thought was bright enough, and much brighter than my Note 2.
I kind of wish phones had matte screens though. Then we wouldn't get the reflection in sunlight.
So when I'm on pornhub I can't see the happy endings with the dark screen?

It was all the way up. I then put it on auto and went down to 41, which is where my S5 lives...so dark. I then went all the way bright again and said to myself.....this is the level I'm used to.
I'll adjust to it I'm sure, but dunno why it doesn't go very bright.

A thread was needed for this? There's already a general discussion thread here full of got my tracking, blah, blah. While I appreciate you reporting a concern of yours, I don't see why this cant go there? This isnt going to stop anyone from getting it. Not trying to be rude OP.

Actually as someone who is thinking of purchasing the device I welcome this thread.
By the way, who the heck are you? I believe there are mods who police the threads, we dont need you chiming in.
It's just kind of funny the first thread you see in the verizon section is someone complaining about the brightness (who already has an s5) when it's been thoroughly covered that the screen doesn't go as bright as some would hope... I checked it out in the AT&T store the other day and it it was bright in there with lots of sunlight.. It never phased me that it was dim. And it most scenarios I am going to be in darker situations than the AT&T store.. I say enjoy your s5.. Party on.

As I told the other dude....My comparison to the S5 is only because that is what I have. I am ditching the S5 for the G3, so it's obvious I would look for what's better and where it lacks....So just because YOU think it's bright enough and wherever you say it was 'thoroughly covered' that there is a brightness concern, I guess that makes you sane and everyone else crazy.
Let people judge for themselves before you start scaring mass amounts of people away from buying the phone man. The title of the thread is a very in your face. My opinion is that it's bright enough for me.
The g3 gets around 450 nits at maximum brightness the s5 is around 500. Its not night and day difference so bfd. The s5 does get a little brighter in Sun light. But no one should be using max brightness indoors

There is an option to increase the contrast in the settings, it is set to a more natural tone to begin with. The S5 is majorly over saturated and although can be set to a higher temp then the G3 screen, it goes in line to the current trend of over-saturated screens as of late. Kick the contrast up on the G3 and see if that appeases your issues.
I would also like to add 450 nits is the v equivalent of 450 candlepower over one square meter or just imagine 450 candles lit in one square meter it is no slouch by any means. And Any real useable lcd in sunlight needs to be in the 1000 to 2000 nit range

It is not very bright and the contrast is not very good (it does not stand out though unless comparing next to each other). As per reviews and display analysis, this is part of the heat and power management of using a Qhd display with the current display panel tech LG uses. Each pixel has the same power efficiency as a 1080p panel, but twice the pixels to power up. Early next year we should see the second generation for Qhd panels that have the same power efficiency of 1080p displays now. Thing is 1080p will be even better, so still will have better battery life and performance.
Samsung will likely have less issues due to amoled tech using less power overall. Who knows though until the Note 3 and Prime release. Big battle brewing with Apple this fall.
