[Q] Dock clock and screen burn-in - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

i read that people had notification bar burn in on these AMOLED screens after a few months of use. i know that within the first year, i can exchange it for another one if this happens, but i'd like to avoid that. do these screens really do that or is it not true? i've set up Gentle Alarm to work with the Samsung Galaxy S dock, which makes the screen stay on if i don't exit. the idea of leaving a clock on for 8-10 hours has me worried.

If you go to the at&t store and look at the infuse models that have been out for a while.. You can see definite burn in the screen.. It was pretty bad when I was messing around when I bought my gs2... I'm hoping it's from the screen dabbers that they have on the phones.. I think you should be fine..

Yeah, those phones run 24x7 and most of the time they get stuck on the 'Unplug your charger to save battery' for 8-9 hrs at a time, and thats where we see a lot of screen burn in. You won't see this from day to day usage, but if you leave it on all night every night, it may burn in.

One of the downsides of OLED is burn-in. There's no way around it. Why don't you order the official Samsung dock? The phone has built in docking s/w that recognizes it and the time moves around the screen when idle so there's no risk of burn in.

that's the dock i have, but the box doesn't have the II on it. the phone fits, the blue light comes on, and the Samsung Desk Home opens up with it. i had just set it to Gentle Alarm since i'd grabbed that from Amazon. i'll check the Desk Home style and use it instead if it moves like that. thanks!

[Q] Is SGS2 not for me?

Hola!
So I really really REALLY like SGS2 and would love to get one. But before I do, one question...
I like to keep my phone plugged in and turned on while I'm at work or at home at the computer. But having done some reading, I see that SGS2 is susceptible to the screen burn in issue. Is that true? Should I not get it in that case?
As I said, I REALLY like the phone, but if I need to change my usage habits just to avoid a known issue, I'd rather look for an alternative.

It's got a SAMOLED screen. Google's your friend...

^^ Ditto!
OP - SGS2 is NOT for you. Further if you like to keep a phone plugged into computer at all times, I suggest the much cheaper MagicJack.
yes, I'm aware of what type of screen it has, thank you. That's the reason I asked about the issue.
I've never had a phone with an amoled screen, so I can only go off of others' experience.
What I'm wondering about is if there are any solutions that would go along with my usage habits. I don't remember what phone I was reading about (Nexus One?), but it had a feature where it would display a moving clock screensaver when docked in. Something along those lines when plugged into USB? Or maybe there are some new technology improvements in SGS2 that I don't know about?

Please don't put words in my mouth. I never said I "like to keep a phone plugged into computer at all times"
If you're going to leave the screen on for a long time every day on the same screen, there will be a burn in. But I imagine with normal use (even for extended periods of time, but the screen changes screens often) there shouldn't be any problems.
So I'd probably skip on this phone if you leave the phone on for 8 hours on the same screen. Maybe the HTC Sensation? Also a VERY good phone, just not as good as the SGS2 ^^

Yeah, my main concern is when I'm at work, since I'm at my desk most of the time there. I'll probably have to settle on the Sensation after all. As you said, it's really nice, but not quite as good as SGS2. Such a shame >_<
Thanks for the suggestion!

I text a lot and get a bunch of emails usually. It really annoys me to have to turn on/unlock the phone every time I get a notification. It's nice to see it a glance when it's on the desk in front of you.

text app like handcent allows your screen to turn on when you receive a message with a popup message, you can read it immediately and reply instantly without pressing any extra button.

Yeah, I actually use it. But I don't always read the texts right away while working. And if the phone is unplugged, it will go back to sleep after a popup shows up.
It's just a personal preference =)
Its funny how lazy people have gotten.
I had original sgs2 for about a year and left it on bright screens with random things on with no burn in issues.
Had sgs2 for a month and have left it on overnight while on lockscreen(bright orange) and others and have no burn in issues.
I haven't personally seen any claims of burn on these forums or sgs forums. Just mostly people asking about it.

Ha, have to admit, I'm pretty lazy
But that's interesting that there's been no reports of it happening... Hmm wonder if I should just say F it and go for it. But then again, I guess you'd have to be consistent about leaving your screen on for long periods of time. I doubt it would burn in if you leave it on for a night or two.
Why don't you go search some of the SGS and variant threads as well as the Nexus S. They use the same screen technology and have been out a lot longer. If they aren't experiencing issues you probably won't either.

I did search before creating the thread. I saw some people reporting burn ins on other phones, but wasn't sure if anything has been improved lately technology-wise that could prevent the issue. I guess not...
I do realize though that it's quite early to see such reports on SGS2.

yes you can and will burn in your AMOLED screen if left on all the time.
my nexus one actually has in the instruction manual to not use the phone for more than 30 minutes of screen on time. that's actually written in the OFFICIAL manual. perhaps later generations of amoled from samsung got better, but burn in still will happen.
note: i use my nexus one with screen on for 3 hours at a time, but i just dont leave a static image in one spot. i'm constantly web browsing etc so no real issue of major burn in. however my status bar did get burnt into the screen after the first month of owning the nexus one. not bad, but present.

My SGS2 internally imploded this morning (or something like that)

I plugged my eleven-day-old Galaxy S II up last night to the Samsung charger connected to the Samsung AC adapter that came with it. I then put it underneath the pillow beside me (not the pillow I sleep on; I do this so that I don't knock it off during the night) and went to bed. When I went to grab it this morning, the phone pretty much burnt my hand. I dropped it quickly and let it cool down for a moment. I had no success with turning it on and, when I got back from school, still had no luck. I ended up taking it back and exchanging it for another one.
It really doesn't bother me that much considering the volume up button on the other one stuck a little. And now I can't get CWM to flash on this one. It seems like nothing is going right for me today.
Woah!!
Definitely gotta be careful with that. These phones do need to breathe in a sense but glad it wasn't worse and you were able to return it. I bet you won't do that one again.
Yeah, definitely do not charge any electronic device while under a pillow because charging generates heat and there is no way for the heat to escape while it's under a pillow, so it builds up. As for flashing CWM, what happens when you use odin?
Sent from my SGS II.
The exact same thing happened to me w a NS4G, never again.
That happen to me but not to that extent, i did it all the time with other phones but I guess I should avoid doing that from now on.
It happened to me a couple of times with different phones. I think when I checked the temp it was like 127F lol
By far this phone is the hottest device i have. The thin profile of the phone can't really dissipate the heat that well. But anyway sorry to hear this about your phone. Good luck with fixing things.

Sounds like a faulty battery pack or charging hardware in the phone - for safety reasons, charging of Li-Ion batteries is suspended if the pack reaches 50C (122F) or less. It sounds like either your pack has a faulty temp sensor or your phone did not terminate charge when the temp rose too high. (I assume that Samsung has such termination circuitry onboard as they would never receive certifications otherwise). You are very lucky, as Li-Ion batteries have a propensity for exploding/catching on fire when overheated during charge.
T
I think Im going to run an auto-script that looks for people saying they use Rom Manager (or try to use it because it sucks and never works right) and then give them an automatic infraction.

Dare to Exchange your Note!

My new GNote purchased on the 13th was giving me serious problems. Terrible fast battery drain even with Juice, very slow charging even with the OEM cable and adapter, really obvious black crush issues. In fact, the black crush was so bad that I could see the red and green gradient pattern on the dialer (end and during call backdrop) fade to a really ugly banded grey and then abruptly drop off to black.
There was also plenty of irritating lag, even with Go Launcher EX especially when scrolling left and right. Changing screen orientation produced very slow icon redraw.
I tried rooting, Juice Defender, SetCPU, battery monitor and other fixes. The phone was indeed going into deep sleep so that wasn't a problem, but under solid use I doubt I'd crack 2 hours with the thing, and it got very hot, although many report this issue so maybe it's normal. It also occasionally reset itself, sometimes with the UI appearing to re-initialize ala the iPhone's respring and sometimes it crashed to a full system reboot. Kies had tons of connection issues. I could transfer files but never back up or restore.
So I exchanged for a new Note with ATT yesterday. They were fine with it, even helped me transfer my screen protector, although the whole handshake and walk me to and from the door thing is embarrassing and weird.
Anyway, the new phone is like night and day... At least for now. At all brightness levels I'd say the black crush is about 30-50% better. The darkest grey level is much darker than my old phone, and I can discern between mid to low grey levels better. One interesting thing is, Quadrant benchmarks I've run thus far have been below 3000 (my old GN benched as high as 3200) yet there's significantly less stutter or lag when scrolling and paging, like night and day in terms of smoothness. I haven't rooted yet, nor have I done anything to alter performance other than install the apps I had on my old Note.
Anyway, thought I'd let folks know that exchanging can indeed help with the little issues that plague the phone.
its still bad dude... i got 0% black crush, little to no lag...
Do you feel like your in a car dealership with the handshake and walk.?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
Sort of, I suppose, although in a car dealership I'd feel a little less creeped out by it. With an ATT store it just feels really forced, especially with the floor or store manager nodding and watching your every move.

Soooo, how long did it take for this discoloration to go away? Because I just realized that I've got it too.
I only noticed it when I turned the brightness all the way up and played an episode of "Firefly" on Netflix to kill the battery. When the phone automatically turned off, the discoloration was very obvious against the whiteness of the splash screen. I usually keep the screen brightness fairly low to conserve battery, plus my wallpapers are rarely brightly colored. I wouldn't have noticed it otherwise.
(And this is why I've never been an early adopter; I like for the bugs to be worked out before I buy something. Damn you, Verizon, for forcing me to an early upgrade.)
Took about 5 hours of on screen time

Well, the iPhones/iPads had this problem. It's simply the adhesive that bonds the display to the glass. It likely hasn't fully cured and using the phone is enough to heat it up and have it fully cure

First post here, hello all. Got my phone on friday last week and noticed a yellow spot (mine was in the lower right, basically on top of the 4th icon in the default dock)
I believe this is spot due to heat. It will show up when I am messing with the phone a lot, but if I set it down or power it off it will go away. I am not surprised to see others are having the same issue, but I was a little surprised to see that the spots were in different locations. I figured there was an especially hot component house behind my spot.
Interesting...
I have two of these phones now with no issues. Must be some bad batches out there... *sigh* c'mon HTC, quality control.

I also cannot report having this issue. However, for the people who do have the issue, considering how cool this phone runs, I'm not sure general use would be enough to heat it up to a temperature that would affect the adhesive if that's the problem. Maybe leave the phone on the charger at max brightness on a white screen for a while?

The employees at Best Buy also thought it's due to heat. I honestly think it's just a few bad batches. I exchanged my phone at the same Best Buy where I originally purchased the phone, and second phone has the same discoloration in the same exact spot as the first phone. I plan on exchanging my phone one last time before the 30 day exchange period is up and hopefully the batch in stock at that time won't have this issue.

On two occasions I tried watching a few shows on Netflix on full brightness for at least an hour. After the hour was up, the discoloration was definitely more visible; there was no lessening of the spots. Perhaps I didn't run it long enough.

I think we should start taking pictures and circling the spots. I will post mine later tonight. If it is indeed some screen defect or adhesive problem, that could explain why it was happening in different spots (if it is) If the heat spots are clustered in one area, maybe there is some specific component producing heat in that area that is discoloring it locally.

What is your experience like so far?

How are you liking your new device so far? What device did you com from, and what are your likes and dislikes?
So far I have played with the phone, at the Verizon store. Its pretty amazing considering its pretty much an galaxy s6 edge, with a bigger screen, pretty much yeah. Pretty much sums it up for me. Yeah. Pretty much.

Phones is awesome.
Have a slight bug that comes and goes where sometimes I wake the screen, I don't have a background image but I have the edge contact/app tab on a black dimlit screen. If I hit the home key once more I get my unlock screen.
If I swipe it I get the menu's and if I choose a contact or an app i am prompted to unlock then and the screen lights up fully.
Happened a few times over the weekend but once today and it's not a big deal.
Came from S6. Loving the edges and size. Lightning fast and battery life is solid.

I'm a big fan of SwiftKey. It will actually learn how you type and what words you use as you use it. It has a heat map that it uses to more reliably figure out what words you are attempting to spell. It's very good. You just use the predictive words if you aren't sure how to spell a word. As you type it gives you the three most likely solutions so you don't have to type out the words.
Just got mine today and LOVE it. I've always been a nexus & opo person due to price and their dev community, but as soon as I played with this bad boy at Verizon I knew I had to get it. I always loathed TouchWiz, but I actually like what they have done with it now.

Same here, but i want some partial battery improvment, such as why make it thin and leave a big ass humping camera, fill the rest of dat space with a bigger BOOOOTERY. Also the rectangular fingerprint seems less accurate than the iphone, however looks faster. But overall, it's a flashy phone lol
So....I'm recently divorced and I get a little drunk around the apartment.
Sunday night dropped the phone in the toilet while taking a whiz and texting. I got it out in about 2 seconds and it seemed OK, worked for another hour until I fell asleep around 10 and had set alarms on my edge+ and my work iPhone to wake me up at 2:00am to kick off some work task...iPhone went off, edge+ didn't.
Screen was dead, speaker was in and out...phone fully functioned otherwise.
I didn't have any rice so I got the bright idea of putting the toaster oven on warm and putting the phone over a few towels...after 8 mins or so my screen came alive for about 20 seconds then died again.
I bought rice early the next morning and left the phone in my car in a paper bag of rice out of the sun. There was still no sign of life even after I got back home from work that evening. I gave up, called asurion who had me fill some form out before sending me an exchange because I made a claim on my previous note 3 before trading up for this one.
My phone sat until last night, my alarms going off and connecting to my wireless headset I was desperately trying to pair with y work iPhone.
In a drunken rage I plunked my already broken edge+ into a bowl of water determined to kill it forever and ensure it got no new life as a refurb. after 5 mins submerged the condition of my phone did not change, my notification light blinked along and my back lights continued to respond to the touches of my dead dark screen.
Today I come home to make lunch and my phone was laying on my desk, I hit the home button and the screen lights up with the battery dead indicator.
I plug my phone in and the fast charging screen comes to life! I power it on and have startup music, my fingerprint scanner unlocked the device, I connected to WiFi, mobile network and Bluetooth and the phone has ran strong for the remainder of the day so far.
I got my replacement today and haven't even opened it. If the edge+ runs strong through the weekend i'll send it back for a refund. I'll also buy Samsung 4eva.

Sounds like a hate/love story LOL
Honestly, if you just want the short of it, buy a Note 5.
The screen is really nice. I don't like the curved edges. I do not use any of the edge functionality at all.
The battery life is OK, and my S5 lasted eons. I never touched lollipop with the S5 and just tweaked the stock OS and removed some junk.
The speed is quite nice. It is snappier than my aging S5. But it should be.
The camera seems to be better. The S5 wasn't bad, the Note 4 wasn't bad. But this seems slightly better.
Wireless charging isn't very convenient. It was absolutely not worth losing SD card support, or a replaceable battery. I loaded my music and literally nothing else.
The flip case hasn't stopped my screen from acquiring small scratches. I haven't dropped it. I know when I do it will break. I haven't yet. I'm terrified. I miss the safety of my tempered glass screen protector.
No root means none of my stuff can be restored the way I have done for the last 5 years. Which means I lost some of my streaming apps that have closed access to new users.
This new non-root thing is difficult.
If I could root it, I'd be fine. It's a good phone. But the pen would have brought real functionality and a flat screen that was easier to protect with a case and a screen protector. Even if I didn't really care about the pen. I think it's a more practical choice over the long haul because it will easier to keep alive.
My S5 looks unused after all this time. I will be hard pressed to do the same with this one. I'm not ragging on it, but that's my honest take. If you're coming from a phone that didn't spin your whole world without fail or so much as a peep. You'll love it. But my S5 did. Big shoes to fill, and lots of sacrifices not just related to the phone itself complicating my opinion.
The whole no root thing is killing me with Verizon. The phone's display is stunning it's quick and responsive. Just hare no development.
