[Q] The city ID app - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hi, I just get my new Galaxy S2 from AT&T few weeks ago, and I think it is just some days ago, there is a notification saying that the City ID app is expired and asked me if I want to pay $2/month. I believe I did hit no. However, I found the app is working (i.e. I can still see which city is the number calling from). I tried to remove the app, but failed (because I haven't root my phone yet)
my question is: say if I did accidentally hit agreed to pay that, then how is it gonna charge me? I mean my google account doesn't have any credit card information. Nor does the app asked me for any credit card information.
moreover, is it possible to remove the app without root the phone?
thank you very much

The charge would show up from AT&T on your bill. As to removing it without root, no can do.

Just call AT&T and let them know you don't want the subscription to that app. That happened to me when with one of the new phones I had a couple years back I got signed up to a subscription service via one of their bloatware apps, I just called them and told them I did not want it, then rooted my phone and deleted the app.
If you don't want to root your phone just complain to the att rep until they permanently block the service from that app from your phone.

yeah, I tried to change the feature online, but their system is updating. I called the customer service, they said they can't have the access to my account now because of the system updating. I'm on my way to root the device now. By the way, I've already loaded the kernel from Odin, is that normal to have i9100 displayed when I power on my phone?

That's covered in the FAQ - Samsung didn't bother to change the bootlogo for "custom" binary users from the I9100

How to buy incompatible apps from Google play for your AT&T Galaxy Note

Hi,
I'm running official AT&T ICS build in my Galaxy Note.
Long story short, I was trying to buy FIFA 12 for 0.25c in the latest sale at google play but it didn't show in my Note's Google Play. Looking in the web I could see that FIFA 12 was on sale for 0.25c but when trying to buy it would not let me add it to my device (SGH-I717) or if done from the Note, it would tell me that the app was incompatible with my device. I looked around and there are plenty of posts and web sites with related info but I just wanted to post here a set of simple steps that worked for me for the AT&T Galaxy Note so people don't have to go and try a million things like I did.
- First I rooted my device. (I'm not going to post any instructions for this, search in this forum.) (and I'm not sure it would work without rooting since we will have to modify a system file)
- Second I installed ROM Toolbox Lite (the free version),
- I run the ROM Toolbox and went to the Root Browser tool.
- I went to the folder system and then I opened the build.prop file with the "Build properties" app (when you select the file to open, it will show a bunch of apps to choose from).
- I changed the values from the following two properties (it might work by changing only the model property but I did both)
from:
ro.product.device = SGH-I717
ro.product.model = SGH-I717
to:
ro.product.device = Galaxy Nexus
ro.product.model = Galaxy Nexus
I restarted the Note and voila! all the applications that were not showing before in Google Play are showing now and I could buy them. Not only that but I could also buy them online away from my Note.
The only draw back I noticed is that Swype was not working after the change, I assume the app was checking for the right model number since it's an app that came exclusively with the Note. But you can just revert back the changes and the apps the were supposed to be incompatible will still be working.
I'm sure there are other models we can use and will still work and that some apps will show for some models and not for others so it's a question of trying.
I did not change the dpi in my phone, still as default 320. I tried to change it and it actually made the apps to not show up in Google Play even with the right changes in the properties.
I hope it's useful to somebody.
Cheers.

wow! thanks for that!
I was frustrated because i wanted the video maker app and a few others. now i can try for them again!
maybe you can help me with a problem i am having with google play...specifically the option to bill for apps thru my carrier (it is missing)...i wanted to get those 25¢ apps. i called at&t and google and after various cache and data clearing and making new google account and much research on here and many other things, i still have no answers. i get the option to use credit card or redeem gift card and at first had option to bill my carrier, but that led me to "there was an error, please try again bla blah blah". when i cleared the cache and data, that option to bill thru the carrier disappeared. Like you i am also runningon my i717-- the at&t ics upgrade (never tried any other roms) and my note is rooted - of course. i had some apps frozen but have restored them. i tried uninstalling and reinstalling google play updates. i did the root first then upgraded to ics (i think...anyway i followed directions i found at xda to the letter. i never deleted any apps just froze them. i never had any prroblems after root and upgrade to ics till now! any ideas? thanks for your time...really!
@mamaboo....you are using cellular data and not wifi to download and purchase the apps?
carrier billing....
Thanks for your suggestion!
i am using cellular data with wifi turned off. i reconciled myself to using a debit card but i really want the billing thru at&t and it just wont work...i have tried all they have suggested at at&t tech support except a master reset. that is just too time consuming right now although imay do one soon just to start fresh. i researched and saw that quite a few ppl have this same problem.
If i find a solution, i will post it here. Maybe i just ned to unroot, i dunno!
i am glad i had the debit card, there are some great apps for a quarter! i missed the first two days and there were some apps i would have definitely gone for. you just cannot beat that price!
i feel like a kid in a candy shop, i bought 8 really good apps and spent only $2.00! and a 900 plus page book--a really great read--for $3.99!
Funny thing is......I am using a Rogers Note with the stock rooted Rogers ICS ROM on it. I am also on a non smartphone data plan. Also I have carrier billing blocked on my account. And I have the carrier billing prompt available. Are you sure you are looking in the correct place?
After selecting the price you get the screen with the "Accept & Buy" prompt. Before selecting "Accept & Buy", right above it you will see the line with "Pay With." All the way to the right will be a drop down menu arrow. Select that arrow and I get a new menu with: Bill my AT&T account, Visa xxx-xxxx, Add card, and Redeem.
Seems strange if it is not there for you. Help file says it should be there as long as you are on cellular data, you aren't behind on your cellphone bill, and you do not have carrier billing blocked through ATT.
carrier billing...
my phone at first gave me the carrier billing option right where you said it should be. but clicking on it gave me a message that said something like "THERE WAS AN ERROR....PLEASE TRY AGAIN" no error number or other info. i called at&t and they had me clear the cache in the google play app...nothing...then clear data...nothing except now there is NO option to carrier billing anymore. i did a battery pull with phone on, i uninstalled google play updates then reinstalled, then i made a NEW google account. between each thing i tried, i checked for the carrier billing option and nothing again. the last resort is a master reset....unless i find an answer here. i have been using google play all morning and with a debit card...at least that worked. i am so mad i missed those first few days of apps because if this. i actually went out and got the prepaid card from walmart....only other thing i can think of is the purchase block i had put on the other phones on my account. at&t says it is not blocked on my phone, but maybe i should have them remove it from those phones just to see...sorry about typos (I think i got them all corrected!)..i am waiting to see if tapatalk goes on sale! think i will just get it anyway....
You say your phone is rooted, right? How about replacing the google play with an older version from the gingerbread ROM?
Hmmm, that sounds like a project to try. everytine i uninstall google play updates, it goes right back and installs them. I am not sure how to do it but i am willing to give it a try. anything but the dreaded master reset for now. and i know that is something i probably should do just to 'clean house' sometime soon..

Hey
I changed the file to the galaxy nexus for my rooted telus i717d and it bricked the phone. I was unable to boot and unable to flash to recovery. I had to send the device in for repair. I got the device back , but just a warning!!!!!
I changed my sgh-717 att to galaxy nexus and only difference was it went just as far but with new error saying file can't be found. Then changed to sgh-747 sgs3 which I also own that was compatible withe the apps I wanted. But same outcome. Ended up just restoring apps I wanted with my sgs3's backups. Also try an app that spoofs the phone to another which ended up bricking phone but I still was able to restore my boot and system files from a nandroid backup. So I'll just use blackmart for now which doesn't check phone Id. Must be because I'm running slimrom 4.1.1 your method might work only on ICS builds. Thanks anyways

Wrong! That's NOT possible by changing build.prop. You did something else that broke it. Please don't mislead people with false statements and bad information.
95% of problems are user related.
IM on ATT and did this and was able to download google wallet. Only problem is when i open google wallet it say its not compatible with the device or Carrier

Only reason I did this was to get google wallet. Just says not compatible with my device ... nothing about carrier...
Final Steps!!!
I was trying to do this for my Note 2 with Saurom ROM, but it didn't work, until I did the final step found in another forum.
Go into the Settings screen, select Applications, select Manage Applications, tap the All category, and select the Google Play app. Clear its cache and data, and then restart your device
It works now and I'm prompted to update 50 other apps, lol.
I'm using cyanogenmod on a s3 and on my phone neither of those where in that file, closest one was brand and that was associated with Samsung. Any suggestions?

OK here is what they DONT TELL YOU!!
I called bell to ask if i have an NFC SIM. NO.
NO CANADIAN BELL USER HAS BEEN GIVEN AN NFC SIM WITH THEIR PHONE. YOU MUST GO TO BELL STORE TO GET A FREE SIM UPGRADE.
ALSO. the guy at bell said they have a notice from RBC telling users to go to:
http://www.rbcroyalbank.com/mobile/wallet/nfc-update/
and fill out the form, and an RBC agent will contact you and arrange a push update to your NFC SIM to enable RBC wallet to work.
I am running a SGS4 from bell running a 4.4.2 google edition rom (by danvdh), with build.prop edited back to my original model number from bell.
I just got back from the bell store and have my NFC sim installed. I have the new RBC app installed.
The new card option on first page of RBC app (seen in screenshots from RBC site) is not visible on my device.
I have filled out the form and am waiting for a call back, i imagine this push update will enable the missing button in RBC app.
will update with more information as it comes available.
ONE WEIRD THING...
since i installed my NFC SIM, my phone is telling me i have a voicemail that does not exist. wont go away.
Yeah!... I been at it for the last 4 hours... LOL Took an hour just to figure out weather or not my SIM Card was an NFC enabled card or not. According to the Bell website that is linked to the RBC app, all S4 phones were shipped with NFC cards. Then to find out from a Bell rep. after talking with 4 different people from *611 that could FINALLY speak proper English, that I had to swap out SIM. and then to find out teh provisioning had to be re sent to SIM card to enable the NFC (6Th call) THEN a call to RBC to find out others are having the same issue with the Wallet option not showing up. I was informed that there must be an issue with Googple Play and they way it is being distributed (maybe a permissions issue) or something to that effect. So, from trying to get a decent English speaking Bell rep, to actually finding somebody that was able to help, and at that, she had to spend at least 20 minutes reading literature that nobody was trained on, to getting in contact with RBC, too.. well.. still no working app the way it should be... me thinks it wasn't ready to be launched yet!!

Yes I now know that... BUT, that is NOT what the bell website claims, NOR is it what the Bell rep I was speaking with understood it to be. The S4 was supposed to have an NFC enabled SIM card when it was handed to the customer. The S3---when it was released, the NFC SIM cards weren't available, and had to be swapped. This is what I was told by Bell. Although.... even tho the S4 was supposed to have the NFC SIM, MOST do not... and have to be swapped as well. And yep, my new SIM says NFC on it... Old one did not.

From what I understand from Bell Tech support, in order for the wallet system to work properly, there has to be a switch enabled on the SIM. Only NFC compatible SIM cards will except the command to 'swich on' ... Unless that is 'switched is on' the RBC App will not recognize your phone as a compatible device, and therefore, not display the Wallett portion of the App. This is how we figured out my SIM card was not NFC compatible (although it SHOULD of been from the beginning, being an S4)... Their provisioning system at Bell could not even communicate with My SIM Card to switch NFC to ON. This is exactly what the tech department explained to me.
And no, the only thing I noticed is it's telling me I have a voice mail as well.. same as you.

When i got the card... about 2 minutes after I powered the phone back on... same deal here... Its gone after I received and deleted a voice mail.
Any updates?? Have you got it working?? Or for that matter, has ANYBODY gotten it to work??
I am desperately trying to get it work but RBC and Bell put the blame on each other.
I spent a good 40 minutes on the phone with Bell yesterday, the agent didn't even know at first what I was talking about. He, according to him, checked a box to enable NFC and said there was nothing much he could do, it's now in RBC's hand.
Guess what, RBC keeps saying I need to get a NFC SIM card. ....
Looks easier to get "Permit A 38"
Update from RBC
The SIM version they provided you isn't supposed to be released until March so our system hasn't been configured to accept it yet. Bell has escalated the issue to the store to ensure no more are released.
They are sending me a new one, hopefully it's gonna work.
So even though I went to the store and got the first NFC card the guy had ever given out, mine is the version number 2 and it's too new to be used?

[Q] SM-N900v Verizon Note 3 on Straight Talk AT&T Contacts not working

ok been reading for hours for a third time... this time for more specific fixes/info...
i have a SM-N900v Verizon Note 3 on Straight Talk using AT&T towers.
took a little bit to get the right settings but its up and running. the stock settings on strait talk did not work.
anyways been using it for a few weeks now and for the most part works but here are the issues ide like to solve...
Contacts not working...
numbers comming in all have a + in front of them and are treated as international numbers +xxx-xxx-xxxx. with this the numbers dont match my contacts list so i dont see who is comming in and i cant just hit and call back.
* tried prefixer app doesnt work
* tried many settings in the call settings/assisted dialing there were 2 settings that seem3ed wrong and i fixed an left...city/area code was 157 i set 570 and national number length was 11 i set to 10
* Installed Twitch Contacts and had it clean up and change all my contacts to (National Format) (xxx) xxx-xxxx and all my incomming calls had contact names!! i thought i solved it... but not only did those calls call out as international but all my contacts anyplace did.. (sigh) so switched my contacts back to (International Format) +1 xxx-xxx-xxxx then i can dial fine but incomming numbers dont show or match up with my contacts again and they dial as internation calls.
* Changed fr4om global to manual and chose the at&t tower. nope.. changed back.
another issue
Phone Activation this sim card is from an unknown source...
i can kill it but comes back everytijme i start. can this be my issue with contacts? maybe it thinks im from outside usa since it can id the sim?
and...
Voice Mail Update...
Wont Go Away!!!! i have to kill it!!!
im not dumb... maybe real ignorant concerning cell phones... i have a computer repair shop and been in business 18+ years and i need to learn alot more since phones and tablets seem to be the computers of the future... and im already doing screen repairs but i need to learn more... so here i am... learn me =]
Not sure about the solution for the contacts, but for the SIM notification, if you are rooted, then you can freeze the VZW Setup Wizard app and that'll kill that. It might even help with the other situation, though not sure. If you aren't rooted, then killing it after each reboot is the only option.

ive never rooted a phone. can i trust towelroot? and what measures do i need to take to secure myself after i root?
it seems like after i root my note 3 there sould be a config file someplace i can change that would remove the + or at least set it to +1 wich i also think might fix this.

Yea, Towelroot is safe. It only works on those phones with the kernel date that is June or older. You'll want to install SuperSu https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu so apps can't get root permissions without you allowing it. You'll probably need to use this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mrbimc.selinux if freezing or renaming the apk (I don't recommend uninstalling because you might need it again later) doesn't stick after rebooting. If you are worried about root after that (I wouldn't, but personal preference), you should be able to uninstall everything and use SuperSU to unroot and nothing else will be affected. This method won't trip Knox so your warranty won't be affected.
but i still havent found a fix for this... does anyone have know what files i need to edeit to fix this?

Verizon could tell HTC 10 was rooted during phone call to Customer Service

Hey – this is just an FYI, you may already know this but I had a bit of a shock when I called Verizon about issues activating an HTC 10 - there was no mobile data
When I told the rep that the phone wouldn’t activate properly he told me “Yes that was correct” the phone is showing “in a rooted state” – and it won’t get mobile data in a rooted state
He told me to uninstall root and install the factory image - that would restore the mobile data
I tried to play dumb, he wasn’t accusing me of anything – he simply said the phone had been rooted somehow by someone – and while in that condition it will not receive mobile data
He went on to tell me all the applications I had installed on that phone that had root access, Root Explorer, Cache Cleaner NG, Titanium Backup, LeeDroid Tweaks, SuperSU – when I tried to play dumb he told me all these applications had already been installed and had root access – and had to go
He was rather insistent that I perform all this while on the phone with him – uninstall root and install the factory build – but I told him I didn’t have time right now
After the call, I did do a factory wipe and it killed root – and it restored the mobile data. I then rooted again from TWRP, it did root, and I didn’t lose mobile data after that
I was just kinda surprised that a very low level customer service rep was immediately able to tell I was rooted – and able to rattle off all the apps I had installed that were problematic
We have the first few verizon htc 10 that were rooted here, and they run mobile data just completely fine. The rep here is full of it, something else clued him in. The only thing I can imagine is he or you activated remote support, which would allow him to see those things. There is no reporting system that would have reported those things back to him.

I have an HTC 10 myself that i had rooted by jcase - and it activated fine a few weeks ago - no issues with mobile data.
I was doing this one for a friend, also rooted by jcase
We gave no authorization for remote support i can tell you that - it was not mentioned at all. I was simply inquiring about the status of the activation.
They must be able to access the phone without your authorization if you call in
All i know is they immediately knew the phone was rooted - and told me the list of apps on the phone that had root access - all of them - and he had every single one
I thought the guy was full of crap - but he kept telling me the phone was in a "rooted state in their system"
They could definitely see ALL the installed apps on the phone without a doubt - he listed them off to me, he told me which apps were good and which apps were known to have issues because they had root access - they knew every app installed on the phone
when he said LeeDroid Tweaks is known to be non official software - my friend and i looked at each other in shock
I dont know what he did - or how he knew it - it was all very surprising to me
We did deny it - we did not admit to anything - and he did no accuse us of doing it either
He just said it would work fine when the factory image is installed and un rooted
I am jcase
I dont see anyway they could access the phone without your auth, esp on leedroid as it doesnt even have the remote assistance system. In any event, I've done a fair number of verizon s-offs/roots, you are the only person ive heard of with network issues or verizon saying the phone was rooted. I went through a ton of support on my lines/phone over the last few weeks (ATT tried to re port my numbers back to their service and knocked out my service).
There is something going on here, your friend must have mentioned it and they added it into the notes or something, I'm quite familiar with their setup and the firmware on the device.

Oh hey – jcase – sorry about that, I’m at work here and I didn’t get a good look at the reply – my apologies.
I’m not complaining about anything, just want you to know. I’ve been really happy with my phone. I appreciate everything you guys did for us.
Here's the thing tho – I hear what you are saying, but the phones been in my possession the entire time – my friends been out of the country on vacation for weeks. She hasn’t ever seen the phone – she didn’t even know what was on it until yesterday when we tried to activate it.
I bought it for her, I sent it to you – I installed the rom and all the software and set it up. She came over last night to pick it up and activate it and that’s what happened when we did.
I never had a Verizon rep list off all the installed apps on a phone before – they definitely could see them. We did not give authorization for any kind of support.
They asked me for the physical address of where the phone was currently located
I figured the guy assumed we had root because he could see superSU, LeeDroid Tweaks Titanium and such. I didn’t even know they could see that.
I mean I’m not making this up – I’ve been doing this since the earliest days, it really freaked me out.
He very matter of factly said - oh i see the problem here...your phone is rooted and isnt on stock software, i can help you take care of that - it will only take a moment. He went on to explain that it probably wasn't anything we did, we didn't need to be concerned, etc
Could it be the "my Verizon" app? On my previous phone, similar things were happening to people with root and it turned out that app was how they knew.

Well the app was installed on the phone, but it was never signed in.
We weren't able to log into any Verizon apps cause she couldn't remember the password - i tried to restore from the Verizon cloud and couldn't log in.
Even without logging in, it sends info to Verizon as soon as a connection is made. I usually go in and disable the Verizon apps thru app manager before putting sim in.
Do you use Verizon cloud? It could be that the cloud app has your apps backed up and they are able to see a list of those apps in their system.

She'd never used the Cloud before - i was trying to get it to work, but she didn't know the password, so no we never used the cloud now or previously for this user. Again - it was installed but we were never able to log into it to run it.

The only other way I could see them knowing what apps are on your phone is through the Verizon support and protection app. Also, the cloud app is constantly running on the phone even if you don't open it ever. You have to actually disable the app through the app manager. Why it always runs I don't know. The same goes for the support and protection app. I've called customer service with Verizon hundreds of time while rooted and never had them tell me I was rooted. One time I was asked if it was rooted but they never told me to unroot.

I had read about this but not experienced it. I run completely stock with a custom kernel, systemless root and have no issues with advanced caling whatsoever.
Anyone got a lead on which app clues them in? I'd be eager to disable any of the Verizon apps if they are the culprit.
My vote is support and protection

One more reason why I dislike Verizon. I only stick with them due to the unlimited data and coverage.
Back when I had an LG G2 I forgot my phone was rooted and I called vzw. I totally forgot about it or I would of restored to stock first. But the rep knew I had root and what was on the phone as well(apps). That was like 2 or more years ago. I looked and there where only my Verizon, verizon login, and vzwvvoicemail. Only vzw apps on it. I think its the My Verizon app.

Tmobile can do the same thing they knew my g4 was rooted and what apps were on that used root access.total invasion of privacy to me.

It's called:
VzwRootStatusProvider
This really "shouldn't" be included in our stock rom, let alone added into a custom one, in my opinion.
It's more or less spyware from Big Red...

Verizon rep knew I was rooted after I tried playing dumb, after I finally fessed up he said he was rooted too, we laughed, he fixed my issues up and we moved on.

Question Google pixel 6 on stock android 13 can't install or use T-Mobile device unlock after pay off?

Bad pic of problem
So I've got the pixel 6 fully updated and completely stock and freshly reset (ready to sell if I can unlock it)
But the app T-Mobile is telling me to use to unlock it isn't compatible with my device.
Now I'm no stranger to tech, I've downloaded the app on another device and copied the APK to the pixel 6 and installed it but it won't connect, it just pops with fatal error when I open the app and then immediately closes.
I've tried doing another reset and installed it that way again with no luck, same thing. I'm at complete loss. I've detailed the issue to tforce on Facebook and they have told me it can't be unlocked until that app tells me it unlocked. I finally convinced them to contact someone higher but they said it would take several days to hear back and that the specialist wouldn't reach out to me directly (bummer) they would have tforce contact me. I just don't want to miss out on selling this (buyer is waiting) I have exhausted what I know and coming here for help.
For clarification! I AM NOT ASKING FOR UNOFFICIAL OR ILLEGAL UNLOCKS, I need this done the right way.

This sounds odd on T-Mobile's part. If they unlock the sim for the phone, you should gain access to unlock the bootloader. I did not need to use the T-Mobile app to do this when I got the phone on launch day.
What I state above assumes the phone has an active sim of course.
Sorry I couldn't help, but the process above worked for me and I'm still paying off my P6.

I've been on the phone and messaging on social media with 7 different employees and they all send me the same link and tell me that I have to use this app to do the final unlock and they can't complete that on their end

Yeah that's what I posted in the bad quality pic. The app hasn't been updated since 2020 and is marked as incompatible with Android 13 but T-Mobile is telling me that's how I unlock it. I've downloaded it on another device and extracted the APK and installed it on the p6 but when launching it I just get a fatal error pop up and it doesn't open. I've tried installing a bunch of other versions from apkmirror but they all do the same. I'm at a loss as to what I can do. I've searched for how to downgrade back to 12 but that requires an unlocked bootloader so I'm just stuck

Maybe try going to APKMirror, downloading the app from there if they have it and see if you can sideload it. Sounds like they need to update their app.
EDIT: See you just posted you have tried that already.

Do you have an active sim that you can have Tmobile unlock the sim?
That may be a way to do it.
If not, I'm sorry I cannot be more helpful.

I'm sorry. Unlocking the sim (to use the phone on other carriers) worked in the past, maybe something changed.
Well here's an update. While waiting for T-Mobile to get back to me. I tried using the Verizon app to get a free trial esim and see if it would work. And it doesn't, it just gets stuck on the checking eligibility and after a few minutes just crashes the app back to home screen. I've given that app all permissions and still not working. So I decided I'd check the IMEI myself. I got on Swappa and it says the IMEI is unlocked and had all the phone details correct so I'm thinking something is wrong on the phone even though it's been freshly reset. I'm just lost.
give this a shot, go to network settings and locate the sim section, if i recall there should be option to request the unlock directly from the device rather than the app your mentioning
