Verizon could tell HTC 10 was rooted during phone call to Customer Service - Verizon HTC 10 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hey – this is just an FYI, you may already know this but I had a bit of a shock when I called Verizon about issues activating an HTC 10 - there was no mobile data
When I told the rep that the phone wouldn’t activate properly he told me “Yes that was correct” the phone is showing “in a rooted state” – and it won’t get mobile data in a rooted state
He told me to uninstall root and install the factory image - that would restore the mobile data
I tried to play dumb, he wasn’t accusing me of anything – he simply said the phone had been rooted somehow by someone – and while in that condition it will not receive mobile data
He went on to tell me all the applications I had installed on that phone that had root access, Root Explorer, Cache Cleaner NG, Titanium Backup, LeeDroid Tweaks, SuperSU – when I tried to play dumb he told me all these applications had already been installed and had root access – and had to go
He was rather insistent that I perform all this while on the phone with him – uninstall root and install the factory build – but I told him I didn’t have time right now
After the call, I did do a factory wipe and it killed root – and it restored the mobile data. I then rooted again from TWRP, it did root, and I didn’t lose mobile data after that
I was just kinda surprised that a very low level customer service rep was immediately able to tell I was rooted – and able to rattle off all the apps I had installed that were problematic

We have the first few verizon htc 10 that were rooted here, and they run mobile data just completely fine. The rep here is full of it, something else clued him in. The only thing I can imagine is he or you activated remote support, which would allow him to see those things. There is no reporting system that would have reported those things back to him.

I have an HTC 10 myself that i had rooted by jcase - and it activated fine a few weeks ago - no issues with mobile data.
I was doing this one for a friend, also rooted by jcase
We gave no authorization for remote support i can tell you that - it was not mentioned at all. I was simply inquiring about the status of the activation.
They must be able to access the phone without your authorization if you call in
All i know is they immediately knew the phone was rooted - and told me the list of apps on the phone that had root access - all of them - and he had every single one
I thought the guy was full of crap - but he kept telling me the phone was in a "rooted state in their system"
They could definitely see ALL the installed apps on the phone without a doubt - he listed them off to me, he told me which apps were good and which apps were known to have issues because they had root access - they knew every app installed on the phone
when he said LeeDroid Tweaks is known to be non official software - my friend and i looked at each other in shock
I dont know what he did - or how he knew it - it was all very surprising to me
We did deny it - we did not admit to anything - and he did no accuse us of doing it either
He just said it would work fine when the factory image is installed and un rooted

I am jcase
I dont see anyway they could access the phone without your auth, esp on leedroid as it doesnt even have the remote assistance system. In any event, I've done a fair number of verizon s-offs/roots, you are the only person ive heard of with network issues or verizon saying the phone was rooted. I went through a ton of support on my lines/phone over the last few weeks (ATT tried to re port my numbers back to their service and knocked out my service).
There is something going on here, your friend must have mentioned it and they added it into the notes or something, I'm quite familiar with their setup and the firmware on the device.

Oh hey – jcase – sorry about that, I’m at work here and I didn’t get a good look at the reply – my apologies.
I’m not complaining about anything, just want you to know. I’ve been really happy with my phone. I appreciate everything you guys did for us.
Here's the thing tho – I hear what you are saying, but the phones been in my possession the entire time – my friends been out of the country on vacation for weeks. She hasn’t ever seen the phone – she didn’t even know what was on it until yesterday when we tried to activate it.
I bought it for her, I sent it to you – I installed the rom and all the software and set it up. She came over last night to pick it up and activate it and that’s what happened when we did.
I never had a Verizon rep list off all the installed apps on a phone before – they definitely could see them. We did not give authorization for any kind of support.
They asked me for the physical address of where the phone was currently located
I figured the guy assumed we had root because he could see superSU, LeeDroid Tweaks Titanium and such. I didn’t even know they could see that.
I mean I’m not making this up – I’ve been doing this since the earliest days, it really freaked me out.
He very matter of factly said - oh i see the problem here...your phone is rooted and isnt on stock software, i can help you take care of that - it will only take a moment. He went on to explain that it probably wasn't anything we did, we didn't need to be concerned, etc

Could it be the "my Verizon" app? On my previous phone, similar things were happening to people with root and it turned out that app was how they knew.

Well the app was installed on the phone, but it was never signed in.
We weren't able to log into any Verizon apps cause she couldn't remember the password - i tried to restore from the Verizon cloud and couldn't log in.

Even without logging in, it sends info to Verizon as soon as a connection is made. I usually go in and disable the Verizon apps thru app manager before putting sim in.

Do you use Verizon cloud? It could be that the cloud app has your apps backed up and they are able to see a list of those apps in their system.

She'd never used the Cloud before - i was trying to get it to work, but she didn't know the password, so no we never used the cloud now or previously for this user. Again - it was installed but we were never able to log into it to run it.

The only other way I could see them knowing what apps are on your phone is through the Verizon support and protection app. Also, the cloud app is constantly running on the phone even if you don't open it ever. You have to actually disable the app through the app manager. Why it always runs I don't know. The same goes for the support and protection app. I've called customer service with Verizon hundreds of time while rooted and never had them tell me I was rooted. One time I was asked if it was rooted but they never told me to unroot.

I had read about this but not experienced it. I run completely stock with a custom kernel, systemless root and have no issues with advanced caling whatsoever.

Anyone got a lead on which app clues them in? I'd be eager to disable any of the Verizon apps if they are the culprit.

My vote is support and protection

One more reason why I dislike Verizon. I only stick with them due to the unlimited data and coverage.

Back when I had an LG G2 I forgot my phone was rooted and I called vzw. I totally forgot about it or I would of restored to stock first. But the rep knew I had root and what was on the phone as well(apps). That was like 2 or more years ago. I looked and there where only my Verizon, verizon login, and vzwvvoicemail. Only vzw apps on it. I think its the My Verizon app.

It's called:
VzwRootStatusProvider
This really "shouldn't" be included in our stock rom, let alone added into a custom one, in my opinion.
It's more or less spyware from Big Red...

[Q] The city ID app

Hi, I just get my new Galaxy S2 from AT&T few weeks ago, and I think it is just some days ago, there is a notification saying that the City ID app is expired and asked me if I want to pay $2/month. I believe I did hit no. However, I found the app is working (i.e. I can still see which city is the number calling from). I tried to remove the app, but failed (because I haven't root my phone yet)
my question is: say if I did accidentally hit agreed to pay that, then how is it gonna charge me? I mean my google account doesn't have any credit card information. Nor does the app asked me for any credit card information.
moreover, is it possible to remove the app without root the phone?
thank you very much
The charge would show up from AT&T on your bill. As to removing it without root, no can do.
Just call AT&T and let them know you don't want the subscription to that app. That happened to me when with one of the new phones I had a couple years back I got signed up to a subscription service via one of their bloatware apps, I just called them and told them I did not want it, then rooted my phone and deleted the app.
If you don't want to root your phone just complain to the att rep until they permanently block the service from that app from your phone.

yeah, I tried to change the feature online, but their system is updating. I called the customer service, they said they can't have the access to my account now because of the system updating. I'm on my way to root the device now. By the way, I've already loaded the kernel from Odin, is that normal to have i9100 displayed when I power on my phone?

That's covered in the FAQ - Samsung didn't bother to change the bootlogo for "custom" binary users from the I9100

Phone vanished from Google Play Store

My phone was in the the store, I noticed it was a bit flaky when I attempted to download an app, sometimes it would work, other times not at all.
Yesterday there was 'an issue' with the Google Play store and free apps, if you attempted to send the app from your PC, it appeared to work as usual, however nothing on the phone happened, and if you attempted to download the app from the phone itself you got 'Error Completing Purchase'. A workaround was to clear the cache from a Google service (I forget which one, it did not help), anyway since the apparent 'fix' for there issue, my phone no longer appears on the Google Play Store at all.
I called Google and spoke with a really nice woman, who looked and asked if my phone was rooted, when I answered yes, she advised this is why it is was dropped, apparently Google does some kind of backup check for root users and does not add phones to the store that are rooted, which kind of makes sense, you register your phone when you first get it, and it's obviously not rooted, if you root and flash a custom ROM you again register however this time, Google checks to see if your rooted and does not add a duplicate entry to the Google Store.
Apparently my phone was dropped as part of the 'fix' for the Google Play Store, no idea how many others were dropped. I would have to revert back to stock to get it added back into the store again.
EDIT: I just checked the download page and It shows I am not rooted, which lends to the idea that there is indeed a second hidden root counter in the Galaxy S2.
If this was all common knowledge I apologize but I spent an hour searching for an answer and never found one.

Probably Mystic's.
Call google CSR back and this time, say "no, my phone isn't rooted".
They will provide you all info you need.
that happened to me yesterday, I just re-flashed the rom and it worked again
Well, apparently the Google Person I spoke with took pity on me and re-added my phone because it's there now.
She and I had a long discussion on the topic of rooting, and she is in complete agreement that the manufacturers are in the wrong. I can think of no other industry where a vendor maintains such a level of control over your device that YOU paid for.
Anyway, my phone is now back in the Google Play Store, so I guess this thread can just die.
Oh and LilChris I'm running Phone Bricker, lol. I PMed you yesterday lol.

What do you mean by "reset" google wallet?

I see a lot of people saying you need to reset google wallet before flashing a new rom, but google wallet has never been able to be opened on my phone because it says device unsupported, so what does it mean by reset google wallet that I'm seeing people say in all of these threads? How do I reset it exactly if I can't open it?
I have not rooted or really tampered with the phone yet so I'm not sure if this is something that is effecting all EVO owners or what.. I just don't want to lose the functionality when it does become available

Personally, if I were you. I'd open the app up anyways, and reset it it from within its settings regardless of if you are actively using it. It won't hurt, its just an extra step that takes a minute.
You are taking a risk of destroying the secure NFC element - even though you don't use it now, you may want to later - or the person who ultimatly ends up with this phone when you are done with it may want to use it.

If you were never able to open the application, there is nothing to clear because nothing ever got modified. Clearing the settings resets it back to stock, and since yours is already in that state the point is moot.

I cannot reset it because I get the Error about no supported country. Can I temp root to change the prop file so I can reset Google wallet? then root?
Just Rooting does not erase anything. You just don't want to do anything that requires wiping the phone, whether that be through recovery, settings menu, or htcdev unlock.
The factory reset of the entire phone is what causes the problems.

If you only go for root access it does not wipe your phone or change anything other than gaining root access. If you do the S-Off method you have more of a chance to mess something up but it still doesn't wipe your phone. Only the htc-dev unlock wipes the phone. You will need root to do the s-unlock tool anyways.

[Q] Sprint Zone

Hello, I've updated to Lolipop and have been loving it. oc5
I decided to root and install TWRP custom recovery.
I went to use Sprint Zone to check my bill and it's gone!
Does sprint zone disappear when you root? Does it disappear when you use a custom recovery such as TWRP?
Did I install something that thought I wanted to get rid of 'bloatware?'
I did install triangle away and busybox pro. I don't think these apps removed it without my knowledge?
Also noticed that all sprint apps and zone are gone from the 'all apps' list.
If sprint zone uninstalls when we root or get a custom recovery, is there any way to get it back?
If not, does anyone have a sm-n900p lollipop version of sprint zone as an installable apk? oc5
Is there any point if it will just uninstall itself again?
Also, is there any reason I don't want to use Sprint Zone while using TWRP and root?
Thank you for your time!

I lost it from the update to lollipop before I ever rooted.
I called Sprint to see what they said.
After a long phone call with lots of trial and error, they had me install this app and run option 1.
It reset all the home screen settings/widgets I had set.
Some other settings were back to default as well. (I don't remember exactly what)
But, I now have Sprint Zone and a couple other bloat apps I was missing that I didn't care were missing.
I was wondering if this app would fix the missing wifi calling and other missing things?
My phone was not yet rooted when I used this app.
My phone went through hands free activation twice and rebooted a couple times.
I'm not sure how it will work on rooted phone, or if it will break root or anything else.

Good luck!

I investigated that option, but I might as well do a hard reset. If anyone has the oc5 installable apk or knows about this issue with it disappearing after root and twrp, i'd greatly appreciate it. I had it just fine in oc5 lollipop but disappeared afterwards.

This was a lot less than a hard reset.
All I noticed was home screen settings back to original when I ran opt1.
All my account settings and apps and whatnot were all still there.

Anyone brave enough to try it? lol
I use Sprint Zone only to pay my bill.

No way, I'm so happy with what happened with option 1 don't dare push the envelope!
I am curious though what will happen with option 2.
Will the Sprint police come knocking on your door?
Will it cause a fire?
I guess we'll never know!
Well opt.2 does nothing that i can see didnt even put sprint zone on my phone ?

Question Google pixel 6 on stock android 13 can't install or use T-Mobile device unlock after pay off?

Bad pic of problem
So I've got the pixel 6 fully updated and completely stock and freshly reset (ready to sell if I can unlock it)
But the app T-Mobile is telling me to use to unlock it isn't compatible with my device.
Now I'm no stranger to tech, I've downloaded the app on another device and copied the APK to the pixel 6 and installed it but it won't connect, it just pops with fatal error when I open the app and then immediately closes.
I've tried doing another reset and installed it that way again with no luck, same thing. I'm at complete loss. I've detailed the issue to tforce on Facebook and they have told me it can't be unlocked until that app tells me it unlocked. I finally convinced them to contact someone higher but they said it would take several days to hear back and that the specialist wouldn't reach out to me directly (bummer) they would have tforce contact me. I just don't want to miss out on selling this (buyer is waiting) I have exhausted what I know and coming here for help.
For clarification! I AM NOT ASKING FOR UNOFFICIAL OR ILLEGAL UNLOCKS, I need this done the right way.

This sounds odd on T-Mobile's part. If they unlock the sim for the phone, you should gain access to unlock the bootloader. I did not need to use the T-Mobile app to do this when I got the phone on launch day.
What I state above assumes the phone has an active sim of course.
Sorry I couldn't help, but the process above worked for me and I'm still paying off my P6.

I've been on the phone and messaging on social media with 7 different employees and they all send me the same link and tell me that I have to use this app to do the final unlock and they can't complete that on their end
T-Mobile Device Unlock (Google - Apps on Google Play
Request a Mobile Device Unlock from T-Mobile without calling Customer Service

Yeah that's what I posted in the bad quality pic. The app hasn't been updated since 2020 and is marked as incompatible with Android 13 but T-Mobile is telling me that's how I unlock it. I've downloaded it on another device and extracted the APK and installed it on the p6 but when launching it I just get a fatal error pop up and it doesn't open. I've tried installing a bunch of other versions from apkmirror but they all do the same. I'm at a loss as to what I can do. I've searched for how to downgrade back to 12 but that requires an unlocked bootloader so I'm just stuck

Maybe try going to APKMirror, downloading the app from there if they have it and see if you can sideload it. Sounds like they need to update their app.
EDIT: See you just posted you have tried that already.

Do you have an active sim that you can have Tmobile unlock the sim?
That may be a way to do it.
If not, I'm sorry I cannot be more helpful.

I'm sorry. Unlocking the sim (to use the phone on other carriers) worked in the past, maybe something changed.
Well here's an update. While waiting for T-Mobile to get back to me. I tried using the Verizon app to get a free trial esim and see if it would work. And it doesn't, it just gets stuck on the checking eligibility and after a few minutes just crashes the app back to home screen. I've given that app all permissions and still not working. So I decided I'd check the IMEI myself. I got on Swappa and it says the IMEI is unlocked and had all the phone details correct so I'm thinking something is wrong on the phone even though it's been freshly reset. I'm just lost.
give this a shot, go to network settings and locate the sim section, if i recall there should be option to request the unlock directly from the device rather than the app your mentioning
