Call Quality? - HTC Rezound

The reviews which are online seem to be VERY conflicting when it comes to call quality. Phone arena says its great and CNET says its bad. Anyone with the phone have any thoughts on call quality?

Heh, this is going to sound weird, but I have only received one phone call since getting the phone on Friday. I had no problems with that call, but probably do not have near enough experience to give comprehensive feedback. I'll get back to you on my impressions after making a call or two today.

I took a call while pulling 4g then drove around till I hit 3g, it was seamless. Call quality better than my X2.

i just took a phone call and i thought it sounded rather good..better than my incredible!

I live in the first "mutli city" launch area, and there are some patches the towers don't reach, like my house. I live in a STRONG 3G area, but just 5 minutes out of 4G in every direction, lol. Call quality on both has been exceptional for me!

Considering the EVO 3D from the original EVO

I am considering going and trading in my Evo for an Evo 3D with Sprints buy back program. I saw that it will be $49.99 after trade in. Is there anything I should know if I go do this? Should I ask them not to update then phone when I go? Just wondering because I know that the new Evos have updated 2.3.3 on them and there is no root yet.
Any advice would be appreciated.
What are you waiting for, get to it. The phone is a BEAST.
The phone comes with 2.3.3 and regardless you can only get temp root, the minor update won't change or block that. Devs are working on a permanent root & S-off solution that might be available in the next few weeks.
Just go & get it

I would recommended you to upgrade. If you want you can try selling your evolution yourself over Craigslist for example and get some more money. One thing I would strongly recommend is buying your new phone at the sprint store, I have seen many minor flaws on those, probably because they are new (dead pixels 3g speeds and other issues) if you buy at a sprint store it will probably be easier for you to exchange it within your 30 days then online retailers, or lets say radio shack. Just from my experience though.

I just did this yesterday and I am glad I did, this phone is awesome. Also, they said that they are not sure how long the buyback will be at that price so if you are thinking about it, go for it.

Definitely worth it. Even if you dont care for the 3d, the hardware upgrade is worth the 50 bucks.
I was one of those people upgrading for the hardware coming from a Hero and thought of the 3D capabilities as a "gimmick." But NOW, I enjoy simply browsing YouTube for any 3D videos. Awesome technology
When I noticed that my girls speedy was doing circles around my evo when we both had cm7 I knew then It was time. On stock this phone pwns the speedy and the supersonic.
I would also recommend the upgrade.... And don't listen to the trolls.... There always something about a device that u may not agree with.... None of of em are perfect..... But id say go for it.....

Love my 3vo. From my cold, dead hands.
I am in the same situation. The main thing holding me back is that I keep hearing that the call quality is no good. I think I can get used to the lack of kickstand, although that little feature of the 4G has really grown on me.
Can anyone give a real evaluation of the call quality? It is a phone, after all.

no doubt about it man..The call quality isn't the greatest but I think im getting used to it..It is still a phone and performs fine but for the amount of $ we spend on these phones I would have expected something better(call quality)..Still a fantastic phone for me though.
I would hold off until they get an updated line out. There are a bunch of issues it seems with version 0001 and 0002. Just my thoughts after doing a ton of research

id be inclined to say its the network but when i have an OG Evo and an Evo 3D together making the same calls the Evo 3D is a lot worse in call quality..It is the phone but I think its how the phone handles the network its connected to...Its not horrible but its also not what it should be.
i mean seriously, why when making a call does the ring volume fluctuate? Loud for 1 ring then a lot lower on the second ring, then back to loud for the 3rd ring...I think this can be fixed with a software update to the phone.

Now every one of.my e3d has that fluctuating ringer for reason ..it doesn't do that during the calls though.

I've never done a trade in so I don't know that once you do its done or you can switch back. If you can't switch back I would find a friend that owns one. Ask to swap phone for one day. It's hard to tell if everyone's problems will become one of yours. For me I can't stay connected to 4g for very long. I have a tower 2 blocks away and my 4g is 1 bar. 3g is 200kb or less. Better for you to see if that's an issue (or any others) for you before crossing the line and not being able to get your old phone back.
It is a great phone. It seems every day I find something new I like and something i don't. Definately a love hate thing going on for me. Ultimately its going to be, can you live with its flaws whatever it happens to be for you. Is it a deal breaker. And your not going to know before you leave the store.

Hello,
I cannot think of a more cost effective upgrade in any arena than the worst case 50 Dollar difference for the 3D.
Even if you could care less about 3D, the aforementioned Dual Core Processors, far greater amounts of Internal Storage, DLNA Connectivity, etc really make it a no brainer.
If your 4G is in excellent condition and you have a decent number of Accessories, you could get far more than 150 by selling it on Craigslist. I got $300 Dollars for mine. I did include 2 Otterbox Defender Cases and an HTC HDMI Dock as well.
Even now, due to the guy I sold it to going to Sprint to Activate the 4G and walk out with 2 3D's instead, I have been helping to sell the 4G again and have someone ready to buy the 4G for 250 Dollars today.
Cheers,
JJ
OK... I'll be a data point. I got two on launch day. Both had crooked screens but the wife doesn't notice nor did she care when I pointed it out. So I left hers alone but my screen was the most crooked (actually to the point that the lower left corner was up under the blackout) so I exchanged it. We live in a fringe area where the phones typically bounce back and forth between a Sprint tower and roaming. My Evo 4G never once dropped a call in the year I owned it but my first 3vo (yes, that's the accepted name ) dropped a call a couple of times here at the house. I got maybe 1 drop in every 20-30 minutes here, so I categorized my new 3vo to be worse than the old Evo 4G at keeping a call. The new (exchanged on with straight screen) has had no dropped calls yet so it seems better.
And as for the actual call quality while you are in a call, I've never been quite sure what people are talking about because my Evo 4G was horrible for sound quality. The earpiece had the common earpiece rattle and the volume on the new 3vo is much louder. I actually think my calls are clearer with the 3vo than the old Evo 4G.
YMMV.

Very poor 3G speeds

So, Thursday started a terrible issue with my 3VO. My 3G speeds have been maxing at 40kbs. On Saturday, I couldn't get over 9kps. I've called Sprint and they had me reset all of the settings, but it didn't help. I purchased an app that looks at apps internet usage and can't find an app that is maxing anything out. I'm not having any issues with Wifi. There isn't any 4G in my area to test.
Is anyone else having this issue? If so, are there any fixes?
Thank you in advance for any help.
LD
What rom are you on?
Did you ask Sprint how their network is there? Tech guy I talked to gave me the info on this area, retention canceled my contract. No ETF for me get to keep the phones.
Yes I too have this issue. Best suggestion is to keep calling Sprint and get everyone you know having similar issues to call in as well so they do something about it.
The infrastructure has become heavily saturated in the past 6 months. A lot of people are having similar issues with this across the country. I get 10-20 kbps, and Sprint told me that's acceptable and nothing is guaranteed, which is true, but they should still maintain some level of service if they expect us to pay hundreds per month.
My 3G is unusable. If I am not on 4G or WiFi I pretty much can't use the internet. Sucks -_-
Did you temp root prior to running the full root program? If so did you delete all of the temp root stuff before full root?
I had the same issue. I believe it had something to do with the root process. If 3g is unusable you should be able to get a warranty replacement from Sprint. That's what I ended up having to do...
I don't know what to say because its the exact opposite for me which is weird because with my OG EVO I would have terrible speeds but with my 3D I seem to top 1Mbps every speed test.
Sent from my Shooter.
My 3g speeds have been horrible too. I get like 20-50kps downtown by my work when I used to get like 300-600. But, by my house I get 300-600 because I'm close to a tower.
I really feel like it started after I rooted, and I never did the temp root.

They gave me a ticket to return the phone to the store, but warned me that the store may replace it with a refurb.
As for your issue, this guy told me that the poor speed was unacceptable and they would do their best to get it fixed. He also put in tickets to have the network examined. I wouldn't take that from them, so you shouldn't either. I've been with Sprint for 7 years and have had my ups-and-downs. Yet, they have been really good lately. Hell, if you want, I will even call them with you. That is just not right!

I haven't rooted because I have been having so many issues with the phone. Once I get it replaced with a good one -- is there a good one? -- then I will root. I've been looking at some of the benchmark scores from some of these ROMs being in the 4000+ range and am drooling. MAJOR DROOLING!

Well, let's keep this thread going and see if we can get some of these issues figured out. Hopefully, we will be able to figure them out.
Oh, one of my biggest issues with the phone is that I sound like I am talking through a tin can to the caller on the other side. Is anyone else having this issue?

I tried to get tickets put in but they kept telling me that the previous ticket is closed (when I had no service, no calls, text and 3g). I tried pleading with several supervisors and the "upper escalation supervisor" said "sorry, speeds are not guaranteed".
I told the guy that at that speed, even if I used it 24/7 for a month straight, I won't hit 2 GB, so why do they advertise unlimited 3G, and he was like "well I'll look into it". I got no response. I've been on the phone with them for the past 3 days, and they just keep telling me, "we're working on it". One person says there are no outages, another says there is. I ask for supervisors, and they just magically "cut off" and I'm not even rude with them. I don't like getting loud and rude over the phone (I have to use an iPhone to call them because how bad service is around here to begin with)

You're not going to get anywhere over the phone. Go in to a Sprint store and talk to someone face to face. The guy I talked to had the OG EVO. I had him set the phones side by side and load the same video from youtube. His og loaded right up while my 3d wouldn't load at all. Also did the same thing downloading an app from the market. OG blew 3D away. I pointed out mine had a dual core processor and he couldn't deny there was a problem with the 3D.... Warranty replacement baby. When it came in we tried the same test and my new 3D loaded up before his og... Not by much, but the difference was obvious.
Well, while I was posting earlier, I was on the phone with Sprint. I was just trying to get an update on the ticket they put into the network people. The CSR kept telling me that he couldn't find a ticket from earlier and that he would put on in. I hung up shortly after.
About an hour later, my data rates went from 10kbs to 800kbs down. So, I am thinking that there was something wrong on the Sprint side of things. Now, I am going to wait a few days and see if they stay where they are. If they stay, and there is a fix for the call quality issue, I am rooting it.
This also means that your issue could be on their side also. I agree with the above poster too. Get into the store and talk to them. You shouldn't give in to what they're telling you either. You pay an additional $10 for premium 3G and 4G. Not for 1x speeds.

Well the problem with mine is with all 5 lines, which are the: LG Optimus, EVO 3D, two EVO 4Gs and an EVO Shift. All have the same issues. I too had the EVO4G when the issues started 2 months ago. I brought it into the store back then, and they just kept replacing it. I got I think 3 replacements. I finally gave in an bought the EVO 3D instead. Same issue. It seems for me at least, its the just the general coverage area, and not because of the phone. The only thing this phone does more is drop calls and aside from the network issues, has to do with the placement of the antenna.
Other than that, the 3G speeds are the same on all 5 phones. 10-20, and maybe 50-70 (kbps, not kb, like 56kbps dialup) past midnight.
EDIT: BTW this occurs with everyone's phone around my area, but they're too lazy to call in. Only one of my friends (who is in the zip code over) is also calling in and getting nowhere as well.
UPDATE: So I got through to a supervisor in retentions, he finally said they can't do anything about it. His first offer was a $10 credit, and I'm like seriously? We argued back and forth and after 2 hours he says "Ok fine, your contract ends today for line XXXX and we will waive your ETF, please return your phone to where you purchased it".
So I ask him what about the other lines and he says no only this line. At that point I just gave up because I don't think he got the point that all phones are experiencing the same thing. I mean I'm not gonna switch with just one line and keep the other 4 on Sprint, especially if they all suffer the same dial up speeds. That will be a ****load of money. Then I got another speech about how service is not guaranteed and a bunch of BS, and I told him "Alright good night" and hung up.
Anybody got a current number to the Executive Department? Last number I found rerouted me to retentions. I don't think they'll be fixing anything anytime soon. He even admit two towers are down in my area and then later said it's probably my phones. If they let all of us out, I'm gone.
Sorry for the threadjack OP.

hey newter.. actually, straight talk uses at&t already. but i was thinking about going back to tmo. at least tmo never gave me dropped calls, poor reception, and procrastinated ringing.
its remarkable that straight talk "claims" to use at&t towers. this is one of the best marketing stunts in history.. disguising your poor service with someone else's. its like placing a large life-sized body portrait of cameron diaz without her head in front of a fat girl and saying its cameron diaz.
i wonder how long this goddamn straight talk company will last. its obvious this could be a 3rd world company trying hard to compete against strong reputable us carriers. i give this stupid company no more than 2 years before it crumples with debt, low sales, and customer disatisfaction. good riddance.

Picked up my Droid DNA at local Verizon Store (NYC)

This will update over time as I have more findings.
First,
The signal strength is amazing. HTC must have done it right . With completely new chips and radios??
The cubicle I am in now is a "dead spot". For HTC One-x , it stays consistently at edge (for both ATT and Tmobile sim card, even Tmobile's 1900mhz is available on the street in NYC near my building).
Galaxy Nexus and Droid Razr (Maxx) all these three can only pick up one bar of 4G or 1 bar of 3G , most of time 3G or nothing at my spot. Everyday so much battery was wasted here due to cell signal and switching between 1G/2G/3G/4G, for all ROMS. (stock, CM10, etc etc). And I don't care the displayed cell strength, but for email/news/apps, the data was simply UNUSABLE.
And guess what... 4 bars of 4G with HTC Droind DNA here, without a hiccup. It is ONE bar short of full bar , at my same cubicle here...
I think this is first surprise.
Screen is amazing , and I don't have better words for it than those reviews. But for my situation, who sits at a corner where there were almost no cell coverage, this is the very first and biggest surprise so far
Will update on Battery Life soon.
Glad to hear about your signal... My gnex was always in the middle but I do notice less switch back to 3g ... Battery life is pretty unbelievable considering the size of the device and size of the battery... Pleasantly surprised

While the DNA does have excellent reception, you may want to check the actual numerical value, I've caught the meter being a little overstated, but nothing terrible.
Getting better service on this phone as well. For the first time being on Verizon I'm getting full 4G bars in my area. Phone so far has been nothing less than amazing! Screen is just beautiful, and a must see in person. Phone is super fast and smooth as butter.

That is a good point.
I checked before the main post to make sure the signal is actually better.
It was -95 at my current location.
Used to be easily smaller than -110 if not -120 which is completely no signal.
End of the day, it is the ability to open Google Play Store, Sync Email, use WeChat , Make phone calls that actually impressed me .
With the phone now in the wild will be interesting to see how it lives up to the expectations.
My wife picked one up this afternoon. The battery died very quickly from its 40% reported level, but will likely hold up better after we charge it properly. Also, the Sense keyboard got borked after a couple hours. It would enlarge the letter on the keyboard itself when pressed, but nothing would show up in the text field. A reboot fixed that issue (hopefully permanently).
I am still undecided between the DNA, GN2 and the Razr HD. So far the DNA looks like the best from the bunch, especially if we end up getting an AOSP ROM on it eventually.

Yes I plugged into my T-Mobile sim card.
It is a instance OK to go. no issues.
I didn't pick mine up in New York but I didn't want to start a new topic
Yesterday i decided I would give the DNA a try. I've been debating if I want this or the Note 2 but the Note 2 isn't out yet, so I figured if I didn't like the DNA I could always return it within 14 days.
I got the impression yesterday that the people at the store didn't really want to sell me the phone. I got there at 11:00 AM and I was told they didn't have their shipments in yet. The guy took my number and said he'd call me as soon as I got them. At 4:00 PM I have not received a call yet and I decide to call them. Lady on the phone tells me they do have them she sounded surprised when I told her about my 11:00 AM experience so she went back to double check and came back telling me they did have them. At 4:15 PM I arrive at the store and tell one of the guys that I'm t here for the phone and he tells me that they don't have them. I tel him I was just told they did and he mentions something about only having them to ship, but then he goes back and comes back telling me they do have them.
Either they didn't really want to sell them, or the people at the Verizon store in Vernon Hills, Illinois are horrible at communicating with each other.
As for the phone, I have to say that right away I started to remember how much I disliked Sense. But that's based on previous experience with the Thunderbolt. The only real complaint I have is the power button, it's quite difficult for me to get to but I'm sure I'll get used to it soon, I'm just so used to devices with the power button on the side now.
The screen is beautiful but I've never been a huge resolution freak, When I look at it next to my Galaxy Nexus they look the same to me. I mean, its bigger and brighter but what I mean is I'm not all like "oh obviously this one is so much sharper". I'm far sighted, they all look blurry to me anyway
Anyway, pretty happy with it so far. Very fast phone, very bright nice screen, good loud speaker. We'll see how well it handles a full Thanksgiving day!
Happy Thanksgiving day to those celebrating today

I also bought my DNA at the Vernon Hills, IL store and had the exact same experience. First they said it's not in stock, then while I'm making arrangements to have it shipped they walk out and hand me one.

At least you were given the option to have it shipped, I didn't even get that lol.
I had a phone conversation with my sister today while I used speaker phone on the DNA, everything sounded perfect! Really liking this phone so far.

[Q] Call quality and where to buy?

I'm glad that I found this great forum! I'm due for an AT&T upgrade now and I have a few questions.
Is the call quality good? I read in some of the reviews that the call sounds a bid muffled. Is that true?
How is the reception?
AT&T is currently selling it for 199 while Amazon and BestBuy sell them for $99. I love Amazon, but since I want to get it from a store where I can test the phone myself, BestBuy is my choice now. I assume when I get the phone at BestBuy, I can test the call quality in the store itself and ask for another phone if the call quality is not good. Is that possible?
Is BestBuy a good choice? I read horror stories in the internet about BestBuy's bad customer service when it comes to returns or replacments of phones.
What are your suggestions?
I apologize for too many questions. Thanks in advance.
I got my phone from BB and wasn't able to test it. I had to get it unboxed but I ended up loving everything about it.
Buying from them would be your best bet because I believe it's either a 2 week or 4 week grace period where you can return the phone if you hate it.
Which you probably won't. (;
In terms of quality, none of my calls have been muffled. Everything is pretty clear aside from being held on hold for 20 minutes and that crappy music. It goes in and down but I assume that's just because it's a little dodgy because its basically being forwarded through the phone.
I bought my phone from BB as well, though there is an AT&T store across the street where I played with it on a prior couple of visits. I've been impressed with the call quality - better than my old I777 GS2, with reception similar to my GS2. My wife has an iphone 4S. Trying to get her to upgrade, but she doesn't like change - probably the reason she is still with me .

Yeah, compared to my old phone (Sony Xperia X10) the call quality is amazing.
I have not had muffled calls, and in fact the calls are really loud, I can hear the speaker with the phone set down if the room isn't too loud.
You can turn down the in-call volume though if you think it is too loud.
And I would suggest BestBuy.com because of THIS offer. Though, if you buy it in the store they should be able to match the offer.
See THIS thread for more information.
But I highly recommend this phone.
Get it from Best Buy for 100 less than AT&T
