Charging cord vs standard USB data cable - HTC EVO 3D

Is there a difference between a charging cord for the EVO and a standard USB data cable for our phones? I thought I remember reading a thread about the charging cable being different so charging faster.
The reason I ask is I need a 15ft USB charging cable for my EVO.

It's all based on the power drawing from the source. I don't think the cable makes a difference.
As a general rule, USB charges slower than AC.

I can tell that there is a difference!
I used normal USB cable from my other mobilephone (xperia x8, and Nokia 5230) and my HTC Evo 3D didnt recharging, he was showing that he is recharging but no... recharg was so slow that he wasnt able to recharg battery. After couple of hours from 20% it went to 18% of battery

I understand that trying to charge off the computer will be slower. But what I was asking is the cord which you plug in to the USB wall adapter (that comes with the phone) different from your average micro-usb cord. Because at the end of the day, the cord we get from the factory to charge is a micro-usb cord.
But I think I read somewhere that there is a difference in the pins or something that identify as a charging cable instead of a data cable allowing more power to pass through.

Not sure but my knowledge tells me that when u plug USB cable to poweradapter it just becomes regular charger and phone knows this by higher voltage coming to it...while USB plugged in to laptop or computer less voltage tells the phone and as well as the drivers from computer tells phone that's its USB cable link! Essentially cable is same but the.power adapter in front just converts USB to 2-pin regular power source!

I just did an experiment with my charger. I used the stock HTC charger that came with the phone. Plugged in my HTC provided cable, went to battery status, and it said "Charging (AC)".
I then tried another micro-USB cord I had laying around and again it said "Charging (AC)".
So my guess is the cord doesn't matter. What I'd like to see is if there is a difference in power that the cord is allowing to be pulled between the two. Anyone know an app for this?
Next I went and took the Griffin charger I bought for my iPad2. It is rated up to 2.1amps for output so it should be sufficient enough to charge our phones just like the stock charger. When I plugged it in using the stock HTC cable and the standard Micro-USB cable, both read: "Charging (USB)". Again, I wonder if there is a difference in power being drawn because it thinks it is USB.

The cord probably doesn't matter as long as it's a decent cord. I'm sure there's some POS cords that are not going to deliver much at all, but any USB cable I've bought from monoprice has charged just fine, and has done its full output either via a usb port or if I plug that cable into a usb->AC adapter.

Elixer 2! Grab it from the market, select 'status bar' and set it up with battery current, which will then allow you to see your current drain (or charge) rate by pulling down your menu!
(lots of other great things in elixer! I urge everyone to check it out! It's totally replaced extended controls for me! Probably the best utility in android since TB!)

The phone sets the charging rate based on if the data lines of the USB cable are active. If they are active, the charging rate is limited to the standard 500mA USB supply. If open, the phone goes into AC mode which allows up to 2A (2000mA) charging rate depending on the power supply.

I'm not entirely sure if MicroUSB is different than some of the other standards out there. But there are indeed some usb cables that are ''Data'' cables and do not charge. I have an old flip phone for my son and his usb data cable connects to the pc fine, we can transfer music to his microsd card etc. However it does not charge his phone at all.

I've used a couple of different cables and here's what I've noticed...
Some cables won't charge, but can be used for data.
Some will charge, but can't be used for data.
Some can charge, and be used for data.
I know that some that charge, but can't transmit data have the data wires missing for cheaper production. And this could be the same thing for those that can be used for data, but not charge.

Can also change data cables into AC charging cables only, so that they will charge at 1000mA from a USB port and not 500 mA as normal. Means you can't use the cable as a data cable, but in a car charger that's not a problem, and often you want a quick charge from a USB port.
Basically the two data pins have to be shorted together--google it.
EDIT: See here-- http://pinouts.ru/Slots/USB_pinout.shtml -- basically the white and green wires need to be shorted together. I have done this and my phone now says Charging (AC) when using car charger or USB from PC.

basically you can have three types of usb port/cable as per 2007 Battery Charging Specification - regular data cable ("old" usb standard) that cand provide up to 100mA without negotiating with the hub, 500mA after negotiating; charging downstream ports that can provide up to 900mA plus data without needing to negotiate; dedicated charging ports that can provide up to 1.5a without data (Ive seen 2a chargers so I suppose this is covered too, in the official standard I cant find it)

Ir does matter. The original usb cable must have some extra or different pins, because when I use a generic one I'm not able to adb to the phone from the PC, I'm only able to adb with the original usb cable. Charging is fine.

!UPDATE!
Starting a Barrel Charger keyboard Dock MOD Thread. If you want yours done for free I'm looking for a volunteer to send me a keyboard dock to modify with standard barrel charging adapter. Stay tuned for the tread link
Covering 3 popular charging topics
1. Why you can't use a USB 2.0 extension cable with the factory charger
2. Testing data proving the Tablet needs 11V or higher to chartge
3. Off the shelf parts and spare parts to make a Wall charger
4. Off the shelf parts and spare parts to make a Car Charger
1.Why you can't use a USB 2.0 with the factory charger
Because the charger is looking for termination of Pin 7 from the Tablet to start sending 15 Volts. Pin 7 is a USB 3 pin, not available in usb 2.0 so the charger never sees termination and continues to send 5V. This is why if you connect your phone or other 5V usb device to the charger it will charge at 5V.
The only way to trick the charger into always sending 15V so that you can use a 2.0 extension cable is to take it apart and bridge ground with pin 7. But you will not be able to use the charger for any other device, not worth it IMO.

Here you can see that pins 5-9 are USB 3.0 only.
2. Testing Data
-The Tablet looks for more than 11V to start charging
-With a source other than from the ASUS charger I supplied pins 1 (RED HOT)and 2 (Black Ground) with 13.5 volts and it charges. My source was a 12V AC to DC power supply I use for testing DC devices.
-My power source was pushing 1.5 Amps during the charge
-All other pins were disconnected on the USB extension.
Its all about voltage. Any AC to DC adapter that supplies at least 11 Volts that has a female usb adapter with ground to pin 1 (RED HOT)and 2 (Black Ground)
CONFIRMED: I Connected my 13 V source to pins 1 and 4 on a USB 2.0 extension cable and it worked.
The Asus charger does need a 3.0 cable extension to work. But with a DIY charger you don't need USB 3.0 cables or connectors.

DIY ADAPTERS
--------------
Wall charging - Any Voltage selectable DC wall adapter that supports at least 11 Volts 1 Amp will work. You will need to add a female DC barrel to USB Female cable which are available cheap or can be made which I will post pics.
Off the shelf Parts $13.99 Total
!IMPORTANT! PLEASE BE AWARE OF POLARITY WHEN USING THESE UNIVERSAL ADAPTERS. YOU WILL DAMAGE YOUR TABLET IF THE POLARITY IS WRONG.
Check this SITE for information on setting up the tips for the correct polarity.
I check polarity every time I connect and disconnect my tablet when testing. If you have basic voltage meter and one USB cable you can sacrifice I suggest you test the polarity by creating a test cable. Cut the cable, expose the bare wire on red and black then test with your meter while connected to your generic charger. If your meter shows a "-" while showing the voltage your polarity is WRONG. If it doesn't show a "-" or in some cases a "+" your polarity is right.

Just updated the OP and man this is frustrating, the charger is very sensitive.
try to get a scope, it is possible that the charge controller is in the tf while the charge circuitry is in the charger. the two middle pins might be control signals which would explain why touching them stops the charger. the lack of signals on the middle pins may explain why when using the dynex charger you lose the battery meter.

DONE
It's voltage people, all voltage. No fancy communicating with the charger. Right now I have a DC power supply use for powering DV voltage devices connected directly to pins 1 and 4 supplying it with 13.8 Volts and it is charging. All other pins are disconnected. This is why the Dynex works, because it is 11 V.
Back to the OP with a follow up.
Something is still missing. If only pins 1 and 4 are used by the charger, then a usb 2.0 cable with four pin/conductors should work as an extension, but it doesn't.

Scratch the hole 2 USB connectios theory, you cant combine 2 voltage from one power source in series. But i'm looking into what those dual cables actually do.
Someone should disassemble there Asus charger, i couldn't figure out how to pry it open, so i gave up before i broke the plastic shell
Someone needs to get an oscilloscope going on the cable , there has got to be a reason Asus chose USB 3.0 connectors, which i think it is for some accessories down the road, who knows

That's not going to work because those cables are all in parallel, they increase the Amps not the voltage. The only way to increase the voltage is through series and you have 2 seperate power sources.

It just arrived and it's charging my TF + dock perfectly. I heard it charges a hair slower than the stock charger, but I don't mind. I also got an RMA for my ASUS charger, so now I can send it back to be fixed.
There are so many people are complaining about the charging issue that it sounds like a flawed design by ASUS. What I don't understand is: Why would anyone take a chance buying a new stock ASUS charger for $30+ when it might also be faulty? Especially when you can get one of these Dynex chargers for almost 1/6th the price!

I picked up this same charger for around the same price a few months ago. It has worked flawlessly. Now I would just like to purchase the Asus usb cable without the AC plug.
That's a good deal!
I called asus earlier today and got an rma for my charger. About an hour ago I tested another charger and I think I found out its the cable.
With the other charger, my cable didn't charge but with the other cable and my charger, it worked.

This might be better item than you realize.
The voltage switch you see in the picture is disconnected from the wall plug piece. The wall plug piece is 15v and has a 6 foot wire to 5.5mm barrel plug, e.g. almost perfect for the TF101.
If you convert the connector to female USB you can plug the TF 40 pin USB cable directly into the wall plug piece, because you do not need the voltage switch and tips. The converter is difficult to find but I have found them on ebay.
Once I realized this information, I also found the wall plug 15v items separately on ebay.
However, the voltage switch and tips are very nice for charging other stuff, like iphone, cell phone, other tablets, etc., at 5v.
Just to make sure I understand this correctly....does this replace my ac plug if say i lose the plug and this will actually plug into my TF (since it uses a proprietary connection) or do I still need that connection and can use this for something else?
I saw this at walmart about a month ago for like $15. I had it in my cart and at checkout I took it out because I "felt" I wouldn't need it and wanted to save the money. Lol.
It definitely looks like a useful thing to have around the house.

You still need the Asus USB cable that came with your tf. This just provides a 15v USB plug which is hard to find as most are only 5v and the tf needs above 11v to charge.

Right, that is it. There are lots of resellers on ebay.
Almost everything using USB is 5v -- EXCEPT the ASUS TF101 which puts 15v on the standard USB power lines. In my opinion, the cable shown can easily & safely handle the power levels. Just make sure nothing else (e.g. 5v stuff) gets plugged into the female USB socket at 15v.

Replacement USB charging cable?

Is there anything special about the USB cable and wall charger that came with the Atrix 4g?
The cable isn't long enough and I need to find one that is at least 6'.
not at all. it's just a standard micro usb cable.
Beware of other phone chargers with mini usb though. The atrix is much more greedy than my wife's lg clamshell and it won't charge from that charger. It turns on but never actually charges.

The cable yes, the charger itself, no.
I got a generic one from [a national store] and it charges but locks up the phone while charging.
So apparently there are differences.
I've used the USB cable from an HTC, a Samsung, and a Blackberry. All worked fine. Take apart a cable and see what's inside of it - I think you'll find they're all the same.
Universal Serial Bus is a standard. In Europe that means that all USB wall chargers have to be more or less the same. I use an Amazon Kindle charger with my Atrix just fine. Have also previously used chargers from other Android devices, WP7 devices and Blackberries.
In short, you'll be fine.

well, yeah. you'll find it won't fit and won't charge if you're trying to use a mini usb cable.
Fair point, I did name the wrong connector. In my defense the USB guys do mess with their connector names and types all the time.
A charger with exactly the same plug (from an lg clamshell) failed to charge my atrix but did turn it on.

All proper chargers work fine on mine!
DON'T use cheap 1$ china chargers! They often have badly stabilized voltage and can even destroy your devices!
While on devices with proper stabilisation the voltage should look like the topmost graphic on this image (even under full load), on cheap devices it often looks like the one on the bottom, or something inbetween!
Also, some very cheap chargers allow the device to draw too much current, while grilling some internal components of the device. This could even start a fire!

For cables, you can use the cheapest! I never had a cable break in a way it could destroy anything besides itself, and I always buy cheap cables from www.dealextreme.com!
I can recommend this cable. Very solid build quality, better than most cables for 10€ around here!
Any of the usb wall chargers advertised for iPhones will work. I found an awesome one for my car by looking the in apple section at walmart.
I order nearly all cables from monoprice.com super duper cheap and they always work just fine. You can get a micro usb for less than a dollar.
I just use a chargers off monoprice. Super cheap adapter and cable.
My friend's galaxy charger fits, but does not charge properly. About 10% per hour.

Funny, my front-mounted USB ports (which put out just about 500mA) do a fine job for most devices including my Atrix. However, do not try to charge from dead via USB. For that you really need the full-power AC adapter. I use one from a previous phone at work (Samsung I think) and it charges in no time.
cable any micro USB cable will do. I have been using the cable that came with my kindle since I got the phone. The cable that came with my phone I think is in my car and the some random 3' cable in my bag for my computer. They all work fine. As for charging the computer and car USB is very slow as the only put out about 2.5 watts. The one that came with our phone puts out a little under 5 watts.
I always buy Monoprice cables. Although I have to admit the 1" micro usb cable I had been using from them seems to be broken as the cable will or will not charge depending on how its folded. But for the $1 or whatever I paid for it, it lasted a long time.

Almost forgot...I've been using the ipad wall charger. It's a 2amp charger and charges the phone extra fast. I've been meaning to look for car cigarette lighter to usb chargers that are intended for ipad so I can have that 2 amps available for any device.
Just for information.
I recently bought HTC Evo 3D for my wife and installed a self-made 5V/3A charger in her car. The charger converts 12V in-car to 5V/3A stable.
I immediately was stuck with a problem. Whenever I put her Evo 3D it charges nicely. But my Atrix don't.
I remembered there is something special in Atrix USB toward charging. I checked and found that adding 10K resistor between white (receive or transmit?) and red (+5V) wires let my Atrix charges as it should be.
10K resistor has no effect in HTC.
From what I know it is just a standard Micro USB, the usb to outlet adapter, I am not sure, but it looks like a fairly standard device.

I got a generic one from [a national store] and it charges but locks up the phone while charging.
So apparently there are differences.

Good to know I'm not the only one that has this problem, thought there was something wrong with my handset.

Forced AC Cable

I've seen a little chatter on the New Trent battery packs, but haven't seen this issue, so I wanted to see if I can figure out what's up.
I've had the IMP500 (5000mAh) for 3 or 4 months and really like it in general. Well, the little micro USB adapter has a little too much play and after 30 or so plug ins and outs it has a hard time maintaining a connection, to the point where it's almost unusable.
When I use the included wire, it shows up as AC charging. But, if I use a 'real' USB cable, it shows up as USB... which as we know can't provide a positive charge while using.
I know about the whole shorting of the 2/3 pins to force an AC charge, and I can see the mechanics that give me AC with the New Trent wire. But it would appear that I'm out of luck without getting a new one of those.
Anyone know of a USB wire that will force AC charging?

No, because any cable that shorts 2-3 isn't a USB cable, just as a charger that doesn't isn't a USB charger. They simply don't meet the specifications. If they're labeled "USB" anything, call the manufacturer and complain.

Got this today and it works like a charm. No more soldering together pins in old i-pod chargers for me. Thanks again for the lead.
just bought two of each of these, should get early next week:

hope these cure my car charging woes lol
One can buy chargers from reputable companies which follow the USB charging specification for under $10 (car or AC). Why mess with non-standard chargers and cables which are no cheaper, from bit players?
Back when I got my Dinc, I bought like 10 of these, they were actually on special for like $2.99 ea.. they are now close to $5 (amazon prime free shipping).

I bought the other day one of these the other day as I didn't have a Car charger...
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002TOKTHO
< $3.50 with free shipping (not amazon prime).
I had a meeting the other day and I ended up connecting my Rezound using one of the cables above with the charger above and got AC charging indication on the phone when it was charging.
Works great.
I also have 4-5 of these around the house ... Not phone related
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037G2BMY
I use them when "family" comes over with their broken desktop computers and need me to "fix" them. Instead of stringing them to my office, I just plug one of these in and Wifi them so that I can work on them remote from my notebook. They are like $8 and work great.

hope it will work fine.
Have you guys heard of Mediabridge? I got one of their ethernet cables, but now it's the only brand I buy when it matters. If anyone is still looking for a charging only cable, they have a long 6 ft. cable and a coiled cable - though they do have sync cables with the same stats too (and cheaper).
Here are the charging only cables from Amazon:
Oops, I guess I do too much lurking and not enough posting because it tells me I can't post outside links until I've had 10 submissions.
Simply do an Amazon search for Mediabridge USB Charging Cable and they should be the first 2 results that show. You can compare them with the data/sync cable because the data cable is a single color where the charging only has a dark cable and light grey terminals.
If you're interested in the data/sync cables you can find them under Mediabridge Hi-Speed USB 2.0
If you're using a wall charger or a car charger, either modify the cable (not ideal) or the charger itself (more ideal) to short the D-/D+ pins. When the phone detects the data pins shorted together it assumes it's connected to an AC charger. If you do this to a cable, make sure that only the micro-USB end is shorted and cut the wires so the USB A end isn't shorted.
Many PC USB ports are limited to 500mA draw anyway.

[Q] Slow charging fix?

Is there a fix or work around to the slow charging issue? If I use the stock charger and cable that came with the DNA I am fine, but my OEM Thunderbolt charger (which looks the same) and my car charger I got from Amazon (which I understand may be a knock off but had worked before on the DNA) or any other charger give me a slow charging notification.
This is a pretty big deal for me since I use my phone a lot for work. If I am in the car my phone is not charging fast enough to keep up with drain from the navigation.
I am rooted, s-off, twrp, and running Viper ROM 1.2.0. I understand HTC implemented this "feature" with the latest update. I couldn't find any info about a fix so are people just dealing with it?

You can flash a kernel like crpalmers or zarboz's kernels with fast charging implemented. But what I recommend is buying a USB charger that wont have that issue.
Take your phone somewhere that they have a Nexus 7 or Asus tablet set up on display with the regular charger hooked up.
They sell the chargers lots of places, the Nexus 7 will be best both spec wise and it comes with a pretty nice micros USB cable but I see the transformer prime charger in more places to walk in and purchase retail brick and mortar. They're solid chargers that will deliver the power your phone will allow. You just have to be careful when using it when charging with fast charging enabled it gets warm because it's running that current through their. The OEM charger only runs about 70% of the rated current through there.
Best Buy has a RocketFish 12volt car charger micro USB with an extra USB slot for a second USB cable and device. I almost never use car chargers but I was actually impressed with the quality of this charger. Also HotTips makes a charger that's rated at 5.0 amps and I believe as long as it's not a cheap crumby USB cable it will work fine. A lot of times it's the cable itself not the charger, so I would try taking your USB cable from home to work and plugging it up to that same USB charging plug and see if you get the same slow charging icon.
Thanks for the thorough response. I tried to do some testing combining different cables and charges and the only one that consistently gives me slow charging is the car charger (which worked fine previously). I have a Transformer Prime charger and Droid Razr charger that both worked fine. My Thunderbolt charger worked when I tried this time but has given me the slow charging notification in the past.
I may have to pick up one of the car chargers you mentioned because that is the most important. My phone is running great otherwise with Viper ROM and the kernel that comes with it so I'd rather not change it.

I believe that forces fast charge when connected to a computer via usb. Some people have said it may fry your usb port but I don't know how true that is.
Android phones in general charge slower when connected via car charger.
this Motorola one here works fine:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000S5Q9CA
or you could always get a power inverter and then use whatever cable you want.
Get the Verizon car charger. Works fine for me..

I ordered these cables from Amazon, got them today and I'm still getting slow charging from the car charger. These are really high quality and still not working. This is pretty ridiculous, HTC should have at least made this optional.
I posted on this a while back, its the cable that causes the issue. If you open up the cable and short the data wires it works perfect. All you needs is wire strippers, electrical tape and shrink tubing.

Thanks for the suggestion. The cables I bought are very high quality, charging specific cables, and I'm still getting slow charging in the car. If HTC only wants to support official OEM chargers that's fine, but then they need to make an official car charger!!
Also, why does HTC only support using the OEM charger when the DNA supports Qi charging? Doesn't make "Sense"

I tried that with the Rezound awhile back and afterwards it still registered as 'charging USB'(aka slow charging).
P.S. that Motorola charger I mentioned above, I opened one up before and noticed it just had the 2 power cables(black & white) and they were also much thicker then the standard cables w/ all 4 wires.
When I did my cable hacks I cut the cable in half, put a piece of shrink tubing on one end reconnected the power wires, shorted the data wires on both plugs. When you do this you cannot reconnect the data wires. They must be separated. I'll post some pics in a few to show you what I mean.

Basically this is what you want it to look like...connect the positive and negative, you can reconnect the shielding too. Also I highly recommend soldering the wires together. Adds strength.

You can do the cable hack shown in the post above as some non OEM chargers do not have the data wires shorted at the charger itself. You can either hack the cables, or if you need the cable for data, then modify your charger. Please make sure your charger is rated at least 800mA. Any charger rated 800mA or below will charge slow. Computer usb ports are rated 500mA and this is why it charges slow. My car's radio has a usb hook up and it also charges my phone at 500mA which is not enough if I'm calling, navigating, etc. The OEM charger is rated 1A. You can use a 2A charger as well but don't use it everyday. Higher rated chargers do charge the battery quicker, but at the expense of the long term battery life.

In my testing even shorting the chargers data pins on chargers seems to be more of a miss. I've done a few and even after shorting them they still state USB mode. It mainly stems from the data pins being present in the cable itself. Two of the chargers I shorted were for a vehicle and they were rated for 2.0 amps. Also if just charging the phone yes don't use high output chargers. But if charging in the car high output won't hurt if you are using navigation, music etc...it actually needs the higher output to charge hence needing to charge at the AC rate.

Charging
I have this issue as well now, I never had it till the update back in Feb. I used other Android phones on my car charger and they charge just fine and it only happens with my DNA. I think there is a firmware issue that is causing this to happen.
This afternoon I hacked a cable as shown above, to use with my car charger. I'm glad to report it worked like a champ and my phone went from slow car charging to very rapid charging.
Thanks for the tip.
