[Q View] view with no sprint = bad idea? - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

Hi
First please pardon my english
I'm new in all these android things, and i'm interested in buying Evo view 4g because of it's price and all it's positive review
but since i live outside us/europe (FYI i live in indonesia) i wont be able to get sprint contract
there's this 1 negative review, i'll paste it here
IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO SIGN UP FOR A TWO YEAR SPRINT PLAN READ THE NEXT PARAGRAPH !
If you intend to use this without connecting it to a Sprint Account there are some things you should consider before making this purchase:
1: You will NOT ever be able to update the Profile, Firmware or PRL of this device. This is very bad.
2: The Cellular network radios will always be on. They will create a SIGNIFICANT drain on your battery as they will be in constant scan mode unable to connect. There are ways around this. There is some software available on the Official Android Marketplace called "Network" that can take you to a page where you can modify the radio settings. It is not 100% reliable, and if you read through the comments on that Applications Review page you will see that it is not working for everyone. There are more permanent ways to deal with cell radios if you are willing and able to root your Evo View 4g. That is a complicated process and as of now many of the "fixes" for cell radios are PERMANENT meaning once you disable them , you can never get them back.
3: You are going to get nagged to death. Each time you boot the tablet you will be presented with a Sprint screen that urges you to activate the device. You will not be able to set your own homepage in the default browser, as, until you have activated the phone Sprint spams bloat at you instructing you to contact a Sprint Rep asap. This will happen during use as well, though it seems to happen randomly, and not very often, but it will happen if you do not disable the Radios.
4: Sprint will often interrupt whatever you are doing on the tablet to remind you that you have not activated it yet..........
5: The screen is not as sharp, vivid or responsive as that of the Best Buy Flyer.
This tablet may not "REQUIRE" a Sprint account for "use" but the features and functionality of this tablet are greatly lessened if you do not have a Sprint Account.
If you want to use this as a wifi only device this is a very poor choice of purchase. You are MUCH better off snagging a wifi only Flyer.
Bottom line the View / Flyer are great tablets, but, if you do not plan to sign up for a Sprint account this is NOT the right tablet for you. Sprint has purposefully built in crippling features to those who use it without a Sprint Account.
I am very sorry I purchased this. I really wish I had just gone with another Flyer.
I am pretty ticked off at the merchant too.......... Claiming that this does not "REQUIRE" a Sprint account to use is the same thing as saying that a Honda Civic does not "REQUIRE" headlights to drive.
Think this over very carefully...... The price really isn't that great.......

because this 14th of march my friend who lives in US will come to indonesia, it's $100-$200 cheaper to buy in US than in indonesia, so i have less than 2 weeks to decide on what tablets to buy
in indonesia CDMA have better internet quality compared to GSM, that's why i'm considering view to be my 1st android tablet, since i can't use sprint service, i'll have to inject the tablet with indonesian CDMA provider, will i miss a lot of things like the review above stated? especially #1
1: You will NOT ever be able to update the Profile, Firmware or PRL of this device. This is very bad.
Thank you

Wow, that reviewer doesn't know a thing about the tablet. All of that is completely false. Pretty much everyone around here doesn't use the device on Sprint.
1. The firmware updates come from HTC via the internet. While Sprint has a hand in approving them, they don't actually send them out. I had no problems downloading, installing, and using the OTA Honeycomb update without any Sprint service. You don't need any PRL updates if you're not using it on Sprint.
2. You can easily turn the cellular radios off - it's called airplane mode. You can still use WiFi/Bluetooth/GPS in airplane mode. There are also other simple ways to deactivate them discussed in this thread.
3. When you boot up the tablet from being turned completely off, you get a prompt to activate it, which you can quickly dismiss. There are no other Sprint prompts at any time. There's no "nagging" whatsoever. And you can even get rid of that activation prompt with root or without root.
4. There are never any interruptions to activate the tablet after the first one when booting it up.
5. The screen is exactly the same as the screen on the Flyer.
Now, as far as being able to use it on an Indonesian CDMA provider, that's something I can't authoritatively give an answer on. In the U.S., it can be successfully flashed to be used on only one other CDMA carrier - Boost - and that's because Boost uses Sprint's network. I'd say there's a good chance you may not be able to use it with any Indonesian CDMA carrier, but I can't say for sure.

wow thank you for the answer, i think i'll get this baby then
is the offer from amazon $289 the best offer atm in US? i'm planning on buying the stylus and screen guard also
when i tried to search in google about where to buy, all i got is reviews with no store that sells this product except for amazon, and yes i have no knowledge about international stores

One thing that kept me away from the view was the updates such as possible ICS will have to be pushed by sprint. I would assume just like a phone that the updates are controlled by the carrier and if they want you to have it. This alone makes the flyer a better deal in my opinion. This is am assumption of course. Also with out having a sim slot this becomes very limited on what carriers it can be used on. I know the flyer comes without sim access but the view is locked to sprint. The 32gb model looked very appealing at 250 but the negatives out weigh the positives.

As I mentioned in my post, this isn't true. While Sprint does approve the updates, the updates are actually built and sent out by HTC. This is the case with Android phones as well - the manufacturers build and send out the updates with the carrier's approval. The carrier does not push them out. My View has never been activated on Sprint, and I received the OTA update to Honeycomb shortly after I purchased it. It all works via the internet and has nothing to do with cellular connectivity. You'll still get any and all official updates on the View even if it's never been activated with Sprint.

The lowest I can find for current prices via a quick search is $274.94 on eBay. It's been down as low as $239 brand new a few times over the past three months, so it will probably drop again. But if you're operating in a specific time frame for the purchase, that range seems to be what they're currently going for.

is anyone currently using sprint TP on the VZW network

I know there are a lot of threads and tutorials on how to do this, but my question is who is currently using a Sprint Touch pro with verizon and how are you doing it? I read that verizon blocked the way that everyone used to do it with *228 option 3, and I wanted to know if there was an alternate way of doing it before I go and buy one.
I am right now, got mine in while the loophole was still open. There is a way to have the esn added by calling cust service but it may take numerous calls to find someone who knows how to add the esn into the system. I am thinking of selling mine. I wonder if it has been on the account once if it will be able to be activated like normal since it was in the system once? I may toy with this and reactivate my vogue then try to reactivate my tp. Might be a plus for a selling point if i can...
No it wont reactivate, if you used the loophole and switch devices it will not reactivate.
Trust me I did this and had to do an ESN repair to get it working again.
I have been looking at the specs for the alltel TP and it seems that they are really similar to Sprints, and if it is known that a sprint TP will not work with verizon anymore i will just get the Alltel one. since verizon bought them it should be easier to add the Alltel one than the sprint one, they might not like it and try saying they can't but I am sure I can get them to do it. thanks for all your help.
RE: Alltel TP on VZW
No Dice on the Alltel Touch Pro on the VZW network! At least for me.
I think the sprint touch pro will work on vzw. The main thing is to setup the phone first and then some how get them to add the esn. That is what i had to do to get alltel to add my sprint touch pro.
you just need to quote the CSA to them that states that you can use any CDMA compatable phone here is the quote from their CSA "Your wireless phone is any device you use to receive our wireless voice or data service. It must comply with Federal Communications Commission regulations and be compatible with our network and your Plan. Whether you buy your wireless phone from us or someone else is entirely your choice. At times we may change your wireless phone's software, applications or programming remotely and without notice. This could affect data you've stored on, the way you've programmed or the way you use your wireless phone. If you purchased a wireless phone (other than a "global phone") from Verizon Wireless for use with a plan with a minimum term and want to reprogram your phone for use with another wireless carrier network, the default service programming code is set to "000000" or "123456." Verizon Wireless in no way guarantees that your Verizon Wireless phone will be capable of being reprogrammed for use with another wireless carrier network after the service programming code is entered, or that another wireless carrier will accept your device for use on its network" this is the post that I found. http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=75164&page=2
I work for verizon and they have this 'come one come all' but it only depends on the person you get as a CSR. There is a request form where you can fill out the phone make, model, and ESN and email/fax it into the people that actually do it for you. I've performed the request without fail. If I can remember to get the request form, I'll post it here as soon as I can.
if you know how to get the esn added, i would love to find out. i went round and round with verizon customer service, sales, tech support and store reps about trying to get a sprint mogul setup for my girlfriend. everyone kept telling me it couldnt be done or they dont do that. found the entry in their websites faq that states they do before anyone would listen to me. was finally told i had to send the phone to their development evaluation center before they could activate it, and that it would take three weeks! so if you have an easier way, please, enlighten me! ps..didnt mean to jack the thread

all they will do is change the settings to be compatible with their network, nothing that you can't do yourself. here is some info about how to do it yourself.

[Q] Differences in AT&T model and unlocked/unbranded?

Hi all,
I've decided to bite the bullet and switch carriers just so I can upgrade from my HD7 to the Titan. Keep in mind I will be unlocking the phone for use on Telus in Canada which is compatible with AT&T 3G.
However I am trying to figure out if there is any benefit to getting the AT&T variant over the unlocked, unbranded model.
I see that on the box for the AT&T model it shows 4G compatible which is cool. So I would assume that using it on Telus would also give me 4G speeds. On the specs for the unlocked model it only shows 3G so I'm wondering if that's not entirely true. I also read somewhere HTC may have included Beats technology in the AT&T version but I doubt it since I haven't heard anything else about that.
I think I'd prefer an unbranded model over the AT&T one but also wondering if anything comes bundled as well that might make one better over the other. Also are the hardware specs identical?
Any help on this would be great
should be no difference or
the only difference is it would be sim locked for their network only the unlocked will work on either telus or at&t without trouble, you could work on sim unlocking the at&t version and that might be a little troublesome, I could be wrong but telus and at&t are promoting FAUX G which is still using 3g with increased speed boost if I am getting this right, hspa+
so the hardware is the same with some minor cosmetic differences (carrier branding vs none) the os and ui with msft strict requirements will be pretty much the same and you could easily uninstall carrier bundled apps, since you do live in canada I would just get the unlocked euro one, you will and I do notice that it switches from H to 3G and then E for Edge every now and then, but if you know how to do it get the at&t version and sim unlock it
Well the unlocked unbranded version uses 3G on 850/900/2100 MHz. AT&T uses 850/1900 MHz. It appears to me that I'm getting HSPA on my Titan, but not HSPA+, but I haven't really tested it very much. You'll have to check what Telus uses for HSPA+ to check if that will work.
Holding down the Windows/Start button brings up the Microsoft Tellme voice activated stuff. It works fine, but the lady has a British accent. This isn't a big deal.
The charger that ships with the unlocked version is the British Standards 1363 plug. Mine also had a BS 1363 to NEMA 5 adapter (aka UK to US), but it was separate from the box, so I think the company I purchased from, eXpansys, threw that in for free. Of course it includes a micro USB charging cable, so any computer USB port or USB wall charger would work, even if you can't use the included charger.
and you know what too with that womans british accent i think the phone is programmed to understand english with an accent, my voice to text experience has been less than stellar lately and my british accent is terrible LOL
Thanks everyone for the info!!
However I'm curious as to which model will give me HSPA+... If anyone can confirm that I'd appreciate it
it dont matter IMO, it's so fast already i love it

Get the ATT version. The unlocked Euro version will not connect to the same 3G bands. As for 4G don't get your hopes up there is no real 4G yet. Until a standard is set any one can say it has 4g if it. 000001 MB over the Max 3g connection.
Well I took my chances and just bought the ATT version off a seller on eBay. We made the deal for $630US incl. shipping. I don't know what the phone sell for off contract but it's the cheapest one I could find that wasn't already open or used. He also sent in a request for an unlock code for it so I'm hoping we'll be able to get one.
I remember the horror when I couldn't get an unlock code for my HD7 and had to wait a week before the codes were available.
Anyway.. it's being sent by UPS so should have it by Weds next week Now I hope it's not a lemon or I'm screwed!!

Go to the Ace hack kit thread for the inspire and read it. Unlocking it is simple as long as you read the manual and have a little common sense.

My dead-end problem.
mine come from UK, and yes, the lady inside the phone almost never recognize my English Voice Pattern, even the simplest: IMDB.
It is funny when i am foreign, i was studying British English at home and now only Americans can understand me. LMAO.
I mean, my HD7 T-Mobile almost never have trouble in using the voice to open stuffs, but my UK Titan is a pain in the ass.
By the way, i would recommend double check everything because my turn-by-turn Navigation of Bing maps doesn't work at US for UK version. If you are really need Turn-by-Turn, i would recommend the AT&T version because it is designed for US Road, maybe Canada too. But we also have other alter maps like Nokia Maps is coming out, or navigon... blah.
If not, the Sim-Free Quad-band Unlocked Titan from Europe is also sweet. I can hit home anytime and use any sim without paying $30-$45 for an unlock code and worry about 3G Frequency since it is the world phone.

That is true. I have this problem and no solutions exists yet. "Display language" in the Settings has "English" with no US/UK selection. It is UK effectively. Bing Maps will therefore have no voice guidance, and speech accessibility (announcing caller name, etc.) don't work, and you need to have a British accent for it to understand you.
I guess we'll have to wait for an AT&T ROM to flash on our devices.
this is true! i just realized my bing maps doesn't work either, it shows my location and will tell me where something is in relation to it but it cannot give me directions, thank god for the turn by turn navigation app which i use frequently, bing maps cannot provide me directions, and it would be great if my voice to text would work as well, yes we will have to wait for some cooked roms to come our way,

my thing is and I don't know if any other us euro titan owners are experiencing this, but i have a great rate and unlimited data plan with at&t because my device is not recognized in their system, if I were to install and at&t rom in the future , would ma bell immediately see my titan and slap a capped data plan on my account?

Starting today, they will probably recognize your phone... lol
Doesn't matter which ROM it runs, they can see it as "HTC Titan" and apply any restrictions they wish.
From the ATT site on the Titan specs: *4G speeds delivered by HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul.
Also, ATT sells the Titan new for $549.99 without contract and free shipping.
See attachment
I was in a mall today with 2 outlets for the AT&T Titan: the Microsoft Store and an AT&T store.
I entered the IMEI for both shops' floor models into htcimeiunlock.com, and for both of them the site claimed to have the codes immediately available, for $25. I've had good luck with that site in the past so I believe that at least for the first batch of Titans the codes are readily available for $25 or so.
Contrast that with AT&T, who probably won't have or give the codes for months, if ever.

what codes are you referring to? the $25 app cards? everyone is going to get them, i don't see why at&t would take time on this, this is sanctioned by msft, all you have to do is go on the msft's own side enter your imei proof of purchase and voila you get a $25 app card mailed to you i believe
and also at&t is a great network! they 10x better coverage than tmobile, i've had horrible experiences with tmobile letting me down, you can have the bestest shiniest most advanced phone out there and but its a useless paperweight if your carrier lets you down
"Codes" == SIM unlock codes (thought that was obvious from my mention of "htcimeiunlock.com").
Good luck getting them from AT&T any time in the next few months, even for a phone purchased at unsubsidized price.
Not a big deal for some folks, but some of us like to travel abroad with our phones and use them with local SIM cards, which makes unlocking critical. Fortunately, there's a non-AT&T source for the codes for HTC devices... you're SOL if you want to travel with a Samsung Mango phone!

Rumor: Honeycomb for evo view by the end of december

Globatron,
I want to thank you for all your useful posts and I also had question.
I own an Evo View since my wife works for Sprint's ad agency and won one via a raffle. I do not have Sprint Service so its essentially a wi-fi only tablet, do you know when and if the Honeycomb updated releases will View owners like myself with no Sprint service be left out in the cold?
I havent gotten a straight answer from Sprint and it seems like you may know people there.
I can't answer that for 100% certain but I would strongly doubt it, the update servers generally just check the model id and CID to make sure it's a valid device not whether you have an active contract. In any case it doesn't really matter becasue we'll put the HC up here anyway once it roll out.

Correct. After I purchased another evo view with no sprint service and no hands free activation I was able to download the updates for it via wi-fi.
The sprint service is mainly for the mobile data ability (3g/4g) and text messages. Other than that you can do everything over wi-fi.

Agreed. I too have a sprint-less view and I recieved a security update today when I hit WiFi. The only thing I didn't see was the file size I was hoping for in the update. 4.56mb instead of 210.
i think its out, i have an update on my view tablet but I wont update until i can confirm that recovery can be unlocked.
A couple of devices has already locked recovery on 3.0 and I hope history doesn't repeat it self
Does anyone know if I update my HTC View (with leaked ROM, not waiting for OTA official update), will I lose 4G?

i have the view and the update came up. Only thing im on the sprint rom. So if you want it now flash one of the old sprints roms
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1062184 - link for all the flyer roms just download one with sprint in its name
but remember when you update you will lose your root
Did you flash it, got any screens for us?
I don't know if location matters, but I'm on the west coast of the US with the View 4G on Sprint and I most definitely do not have the firmware update available on my tablet when I go to check system updates.
Still not reading anywhere about whether or not updating to the leaked ROM will ruin the 4G...I guess I'm just gonna wait. Further, since no one has the actual official update on Sprint's devices (or at least has posted) how do we know if we'll lose the ability to root the device? That's, from all accounts, a rumor since it's happened to other devices in the past...Not all, but some. So it's not confirmed.
Is there anyone out there who has actually flashed their Sprint HTC View to the leaked ROM (who also uses the data plan from Sprint)? Some insight would be much appreciated about whether or not 3G and/or 4G still works after doing so. Thanks.
I tried to update via the tablet settings and I got an Error code 1233 saying it could not be completed...?
Hmmm
The update I received, I can not and will not install. The first time I let it try, I got a nifty blue Andy with a caution sign over his head that sat there for about 30 minutes. I held down the power button until it shut off and rebooted, thankfully, back to the way it was. Then I deleted the zip file.

AT&T Replacement phone policy

I'm sure this has been posted before, but I can't find it even after Googling it. What is AT&T's policy for replacement phones? I'm on my 3rd HTC Titan, and am still having call quality issues, which I know is a known issue. How many phones must I go through until I have the option of switching to another model? I need my phone for my business, and simply can't keep trying new phones hoping one works.
If it wasn't for that, and AT&T blocking the update which fixes the disappearing keyboard, I'd love the phone.

Unless you are within your initial 30 day return/exchange window, I don't think at&t has a specific policy allowing you to swap out your current phone for a different one. I know if you file an insurance claim, and they don't have your phone in stock, they'll provide you with a similar one.
I do know that at&t certainly has the power to make exceptions and get you a different device if you complain enough and talk to the right people. But that's hit or miss.

Potential new customer. 5X US and development/issues

So I've been out of the loop for about a year now and looking to grab the Honor 5X US version on at&t or T-Mobile. My last phone I kept for 2 years almost ZTE Boost Max(Iconic)
and basically all I did was play with it. Meaning root, PhilZ, Link2sd, Viper4android, and most importantly Xposed.
My questions. Is it a easy plug n play going to a new carrier at&t or T-Mobile in the US with this phone. No issues at all right.
Is all development pretty good. Plenty of options. With the ZTE phone is 1 option for everything and nothing else. I did end up with a custom rom/kernel and a overclocked cpu. Do we have those options.
Thanks in advance I've limited the phone choices to just a couple. $250 budget and want development options and ease of carrier use
AT&T won't be a problem. T-Mob is missing support for LTE Band 12. I've read in these boards that support is coming soon (maybe in the MM update?). I'm not sure about WiFi calling. Normally you need carrier firmware for that type of functionality though.
Dev support seems healthy enough. I'd recommend looking in the development section and judging for yourself
It should be noted that while band 12 support is missing, you can still use the phone on T-Mobile, and you can still get 4G LTE (if it's available in your area).
I don't have WiFi calling here, and you probably do need carrier firmware for that.
Wifi calling wasn't really something I need. I've never experienced good wifi calling reception in the past. I just remember a year or so ago when the new wave of unlocked phones hit like One Plus, and so on there were always issues with not having LTE or something. Good to know at&t is fully supported. I'm a buy and hook up myself online person. Can't stand dealing with customer service on the phone.
So ultimately hows the phone in terms of everything. Signal? Options? Dependability?
So we still don't have MM available on the phones? This is concerning as I wanted the newest OS. The one thing I never liked about android vs Apple. When an update hit, everyone within a 2 year old phone got that update that day. MM came out around XMas so I was hoping for it.
Thanks for the replies and I'm late replying as I'm just a very patient shopper. Any new phone I buy I keep 1-2 years depending
If y'all want latest updates to android. Then there's no doubt about it as we all know this on XDA.........buy a nexus devices
