Reason i ask is, i recently swapped out my first GNote for a second to see if the replacement would get better benchmark numbers and on the second day of ownership i managed to scratch the screen. I remember that Megiures has a plastic polish to remove scratches from convertible top windows that are plastic. Versus taking this one back for a new one (BB black tie), I wanted to try and remove the scratches.
Any thoughts or experiences you may have is welcomed.

The screen is glass. I doubt a plastic polish would do much of anything. I don't remember where but there was a glass polish posted somewhere that apparently works well.

Gorilla glass is a alkali-aluminosilicate glass, which is just fancy talk for chemically treated glass, so any plastic methods may or may not work, depending on how they work. I came from the Samsung Vibrant which has GG and I remembered this thread on XDA. It’s far beyond just a small scratch and the fix isn’t perfect, but it shows what can be done. There are down sides to doing this obviously.
As for the swap, I’ve ran into the same situation before and encountered snags. I went to exchange BB for a palm phone for a BB. The palm I had wouldn’t connect to BT in my car, refused to sync regularly, and a host of other problems. Well it has a small knick in the corner so they said they couldn’t exchange it for a BB. So I told them fine, I want a new one because this one doesn’t work right. They upheld their end of the bargain and did the exchange. I walked outside, attempted to connect to BT which I knew it would fail as it was a known issue, and took it right back in and said “id like to exchange this unscratched like new phone for a BB”. They had no room to move because I was following the rules this time. So moral of the story, you may have to exchange for a new Note then trade for a BB based on the new unscratched note not performing. It’s a long PITA, and be ready to argue about those restocking charges that AT&T love to charge.

I think he meant BB as in Best Buy, not Blackberry, not that it really matters. And thanks for posting the link to that thread, I knew it was around one of the galaxy forums, just didn't remember which one.

Ahh, I see, just assumed the Black Tie was a recent BlackBerry release, I avoid best buy at all costs so I'm not up on their lingo.

I've done some research on this and there's really no way to remove visible glass scratches. HOWEVER, often times if the scratch isn't too deep your average screen protector will 'seal' the scratch (fill it with the thin film of adhesive coating that most of them come with). I imagine this would also be true of the glass type protectors.
It depends on how deep the scratch is, but when I put a hairline scratch on my iPhone 4 a good clear screen protector 'erased' it and I'd forgotten it was there until I pulled it off recently.

The reason it seems to fill it is actually quite the oppisite. A small scratch is actually difficult to see. It's when it collects dirt and grime that it really starts screaming at you. Buy cleaning the screen (always first step in applying SP), you are effectivly minimizing the gunk in it, then preventing any future gunk plus applying a surface for eyes to gravitate to rather then the scratch. This helped alot on my ipod touch which saw alot of abuse getting passed around to the wife and other people playing with it in the living room.

No offense to you, or anything, but that seems EXTREMELY unethical to switch out a $600 phone just because you scratched it... there's no reason to return it, you are the one that scratched it....

Cleaning prior to applying a SP is good advice, but I'm not talking about grime in a scratch. You can see some glass scratches regardless of dirt (whether it's on the surface in good light or deep enough to see with the display on).
After the screen is cleaned, the adhesive coating of the screen protector fills the small furrow so your eye doesn't see the light being diffracted by the edges that have been etched (scratched) into the glass. The general concept is used to 'fix' larger glass cracks and chips with epoxy/resin when replacing the whole thing is not possible or worthwhile.

So apparently I lent the tablet to my sister to get the hang of it (I know what they say about women and technology) but yeah soon to regret, After cleaning up and making the screen all shiny I noticed a rather long 1" scratch on the screen, I thought it was something that a little damp cloth can wipe off turns out it's actually scratched the screen. I've never dropped the tablet but I can't say the same when women handle it (No offense ladies, if ever)
I wouldn't mind if the sides got dented, but that 1" of deep scratch shattered my heart to pieces. So question is, I thought the glass was GorillaGlass, dafuq samsung? I've had a 3Gs for almost a year or more, and there isn't a single dent/scratch on that screen despite the heavy usage on it, same with my 8 month old Galaxy S.
They say it's Gorilla Glass, but what's that really mean?
Just wondering if she wears any rings, such as diamonds? Maybe it got dragged across the screen. Just a thought or do you know what caused it already?
Really sorry to hear, cause I would be going nuts about it. Not at her per say, but just having that scratch would make me nuts.
Just another quick thought. If it was for her to get used to, I would ask for hers before she scratches it. Surely have yours convinced her she can't live without her own.

It's gorrilla glass, but unfortunately, it's made of glass, not gorrillas. But yes, it's the same stuff as used in lots of consumer electronics. Ask Du Pont if you want more info. Scratch resistant, not scratch proof...

Yes, it's gorilla glass. Yes, it's resistant to scratches. No, it's not immune to them. It WILL get scratched if you chop your vegetables on it, it will get broken if you drop it from 2 meters, it will look like Swiss cheese if you shot at it with a minigun.
On a more realistic note, it can also get scratched by diamond rings, by putting it on the floor/table face-down, by pulling it in and out of a tight case if some sand somehow gets in the case, ...
Lending my device to other people is why I always have it in a case and why I have a screen protector on it.
If you're sure your sister is the one who made the scratch, and she is buying her own one, I'd ask her to trade the devices or something.
There are also some products around that claim they can remove scratches, but I don't have any experience with them.
Putting a screen protector on might just change the flow of light in a way that'll hide the scratch, but it can also do it in a way that'll make it even more visible/annoying. I'd love to put on a screen protector but it kinda kills the whole idea of "Gorilla Glass" I don't know if you watched the initial release before the 2G iPhone came out and they kept talking about how Gorilla Glass was one of the best inventions and so the praise went on, the had some live demo's and it was amazing (2 years ago). I don't really know if the glass on the tablet is not thick enough? or it's just a really thin glass pane? Yes, I've watched a lot of stuff about gorilla glass, but I've also done some live testing at my university (we got a batch of pieces to compare it to normal glass). I even have the specific results somewhere ...
All in all yes, it's a great improvement. It is seriously resistant to scratches, it's much much (and I mean MUCH) harder to break, but still, it isn't perfect.
I wouldn't say your bulletproof vest - tank example is completely appropriate here, since a bullet shot at a tank wouldn't compromise the tanks usability (at least not mostly, there are some extreme cases when it might, but let's leave that stuff to Hollywood) - but a scratch on the screen of a tablet definitely would. And a screen protector does help against scratches from diamond rings.
I have an Ultra Crystal SGP and I haven't noticed the screen responsiveness to lower. The only thing that is bad about it is that it gets dirtier faster and seems to reflect light a bit more. I also don't have to press any harder then I had to without the protector, as soon as I touch it (actually a little bit before ) the touch is recognised. If you feel your screen responsiveness diminishes, you can also applications to raise the "touchscreen sensitivity".

Disagree, Mate, I have a Zagg protector and a case as well. For the expense of a 32GB 10.1, I'm not about to risk damage. Other poster is right: it is made of glass afterall not gorillas.
Also, like another thing best kept covered; there's very little loss of sensitivity when its covered.

Im usually not a fan of screen protectors on my phones but when i bought my tab at best buy they had the zagg invisibleshield for $15. It wasnt easy to put on and it looked pretty bad at first but once it dried out It pretty much disappeared. I dont even notice it anymore. A 10" screen is bound to get scratched up. Im glad i did it.
I got a scratch on my screen, and It had to be a scratch because I couldn't wipe it off even with a few different cleaners.
A few months later - the scratch is gone!!!

I have a scratch that just appeared on my Tab... I am the only one who uses it, and I keep it in a cover, didnt put the screen just to get mad, ordered one today..., 1 question: is it realy Gorila GLASS?, I dont think so!

Having a screen protector does defeat the purpose of the gorilla glass. However, I would rather have that extra measure of protection and just replace the screen protector every few months.

Used to have an invisibleSheild on an older phone but I hated the feel of the thing. Feels rubery, very unpleaseant!
I don't know for other brands but I'd realy go for something that repels the finger prints... I always have to clean the thing :|

I was about to say that, as good as it protects, it's more like a condom on the phone, a dry one.
What ticks me off about it is when you sweat through your jeans the whole screen becomes a mess and the phone (The one I had it on) could barely read my touch.

I wonder if anybody has managed to get cracked screen replaced under warranty as its supposed to be this all singing all dancing wonderfully strong glass.
I have never managed to crack a screen before and I now have a hairline fracture across the top.
Surely they overegging their products if there are all these cracked screens.
Also has anybody seen these screens for the wonderful £60 mentioned in the repairing tutorial they all seem to be nearer £130 now.
£130 will be the price of a s/h SG2 when the SG3 comes out prob. I might just wait a bit.

"They" are overegging nothing. Gorilla glass is excellent - look at all the smashed iphone screens around.
However, it's not indestructable. It's marketed as "scratch resistant" - not scratch proof and not crack proof. Enough pressure on the screen - any screen -and it will crack, as you have discovered. As indeed did I, but expected nothing else after a tram ran over my old SGS2...
I got a replacement via my insurance. Didn't bother checking to see if it was covered by warranty, because in my case I didn't have a leg to stand on.
Can't see anyone replacing a broken screen unde warranty, but different suppliers=different rules.
FWIW, my PMP (Cowon S9) with Gorilla glass has add umpteen drops and all other sorts of no-nos - sand, keys, you name it. Three years on, not a mark on it.
Gorilla glass is never advertised as crack proof, its scratch resistance.
Gorilla glass 2 is thinner but same strength.

This sg2 gets dropped and its toast. I have had an XDA1 which has faired better than this.
I don't expect indestructable, I wasn't blending it
They advertise it as tough glass, which I think it isn't particularly. My screen is scratched, and I make sure no keys or coins etc.. go in the same pocket.

The factors of height, landing surface and angle the phone make contact with the landing surface are very important on whether your phone's screen survives a drop. The least important factor is the material the screen is made from.
You will hear stories of the same brand of phone being dropped from a couple of centimetres to a couple of metres onto sufaces from carpet to concrete. Plenty have survived what would normally be considered a dead cert to smash the screen and didn't.
It is tough glass, but remember that it is glass and glass breaks.

Thank you for your kind help. I have no choice but to replace it. I wanted to gauge the extent of this cracking whilst minor droppage occurs.
I have friends taking the p1ss because I have managed to break "really strong gorilla glass".
I was getting my son out of the car and he pulled on the headphones and it dropped from waist height and has a hairline crack on the glass.
The extent of the problems looked fairly large after bothering to google for it. I know I shouldn't feed the troll but what research have you done in to it. I expect none. Apart from yours haven't broken - wow you must be a scientist.

This is why I am asking really. If you blow on it and it breaks then I want to know from a warranty perspective. The material on the SG2 might be particularly brittle or on a certain batch.

I have friends taking the p1ss because I have managed to break "really strong gorilla glass".
I was getting my son out of the car and he pulled on the headphones and it dropped from waist height and has a hairline crack on the glass.
The extent of the problems looked fairly large after bothering to google for it. I know I shouldn't feed the troll but what research have you done in to it. I expect none. Apart from yours haven't broken - wow you must be a scientist.

As fred_up states, there are many factors to account for when you drop your phone. My brother dropped his SGS1 from about 15 cm height. But it landed on the corner of a kerbstone, so it cracked bigtime. I've dropped mine flat onto gravel from about 2m up - screen was spotless, some chips on the "chrome".

Too true I suppose. Just that if someone advertises something then one has a right to be annoyed. I would be far less annoyed if it had a glass screen on it and not a "corning gorilla glass" screen.

Lets just say you were unluckly that your screen cracked, as i and many people have been luckly, but for your warranty covering a cracked screen you can only but ask. I personaly think that it wont be covered, as the idea is to cover faults by samsung not your bad luck.
I couldn't help notice yor argument started to delve into science.
Glass is a brittle material and so it can take many fatal blows without showing any signs of damage. But one day a minor impact which would usually have no effect on a brand new piece will be the straw the broke the camel's back. This is because the fatal blows which it suffered previously will have left considerable damage only visible on a microscopic level. This explains why one guy can have his phone fall down the stairs many times and survive but have the screen break because "he blew on it" as Dredwaker put it.
Laboratory tests and can ensure that manufacturing is consistent but real-life will throw in many unexpected variables and odds.

AFAIK, the warranty does not cover physical damages to the phone.
No manufacturer services a device with physical damages on warranty terms, unless resistance to physical stress is in product requirements.

Fractures have tendency to propagate on glass. Any stress, including usual usage in this case, touching, vibration, etc. will propagate it further.
I remember cracking my LCD screen on laptop. At first it was barely a point, I did not touch the screen or apply any pressure, but only from opening-closing the lid+vibration, in a few days almost the whole screen was black.
It's only been a month since I bought my S3. I have 5-6 very tiny scratches on my screen which are easily visible in bright light. :crying:
It's like a group of scratches at the bottom center of my screen. I am still trying to figure out how I got them. I can assure you that I am not responsible for these scratches. :crying:
I have treated my phone with respect and yet it has developed these scratches. I have never dropped my phone. I have never kept it face-down on any surface.
The funny part is that the back cover on the Samsung Galaxy S3 sucks as well. Its got tiny scratches all over even though I have never ever kept the phone on any surface without keeping a micro-fiber cloth under the phone!
The only possible explanation for the scratches can be dust. Can I claim warranty on the phone since the screen is supposed to be scratch resistant?
I am super sad now
A few fine sand particles against the glass in a pocket will do more than two sets of keys.

If you can't put a screen protector on a $700 phone then you should reconsider the decision of owning a smartphone.

I am not allergic to either. The problem is that I ordered the TRIDEA ALIKE case on 8th June from ebay but there were some manufacturing problems and the case delivery got delayed. It should be here in a weeks time. There are no decent screen protectors available in the local market. The ones that are available on ebay will take 2 weeks to be delivered to my country. With the case still not delivered, I am still contemplating about ordering a screen protector online or waiting for it to hit the stores.

No one in their right senses would think of not putting a screen protector on a costly phone. Like I said, I was waiting for some screen protectors to hit the local markets since I already had a bad experience with shopping for a case online. I ordered it a month back and it's still not here.
I heard that the Galaxy s3 comes with an additional coating that repels oil. Could it be possible that I have only scratched this coating and not the actual glass. If yes, how can I tell the difference?

As posted elsewhere, got my first scratch last week, sand was the culprit, my fault though. Doesn't worry me. Sure I'll get a few more. Such is life.

What makes you think I am stupid? I have had 2 phones with gorilla glass before I got my s3 and none of them got a single scratch on them ever. I started using a screen protector when my phones were a couple of months old since its human nature to not care much about old things.
I was waiting for a good screen protector to be available in the local stores because I only just got the phone and thought It was okay to wait for sometime before I get a screen protector. I had no idea the S3 screen was going to be this delicate.

If I was in your situation, I would not use the phone untill I get screen guard.
Every screen gets scratches even if its scratch resistance.

Scratches don't affect the functionality of the device. Suck it up.
Also, scratch resistant not scratch PROOF.

What screen protector do you recommend. Something that I can get quickly and has good quality. I know SGP makes the best ones but are they available in India. Ordering online means having to wait a very long time for the shipping! ;(

1 SGS1, unscratched. 3 SGS2s, one with small scratch on screen and many chips in bezel, one with totally smashed screen (tram ran over it), one unscratched. 1 SGS3, tiny scratch on screen. 1 Lumia 800, unscratched (unused, to tell the truth).
I can barely see the scratch on the SGS3, it's ca. 3mm long, upper right of screen. And as said, since it was my fault for taking it to a beach, that's even less reason to beat myself up about it.
Screenguards seem to be the way forward for you. I just don't care enough - phone's for using, and I can't be bothered with the hassle of "babysitting" it instead of using it.

That makes sense. I hate the fact that I have to treat my phone like a living thing. I am only going to do this to get a good resale value on my phone when I decide to upgrade just like i did with my older phones.
Anyway, does anyone have the answer to my question. How can i tell whether i scratched the screen or the coating!

In fairness, mine hasn't lasted the last 3 days on the beach.. It was hidden in my bag but sand gets everywhere. A few small scratches, but so be it my phone is staying naked.
Curious how everyone else's phones have been holding up so far. The back of my phone is covered in little specks, which appear to be from pitting and minor surface scratches. It's very disappointing since I've had my phone permanently in a case since I've had it. I'm wondering if the metal is just so soft that little vibrations while in the case is causing marks.
I'm hoping there's a way I can get them out but seeing as it has a brushed finish, I don't see it being all that easy.
That's indeed pretty surprising (marks with a case on). I would think the only way this would be possible, is if there was some grit or sand between the case and the device. If this were in fact true, I can see it rubbing on the finish over time (as others here have also mentioned). Even so, the scratches would probably just be in isolated areas, not for the back to be covered in scratches, unless there was grit captured everywhere inside the case. Which is very unlikely, as you would have noticed that.
The other possibility is scratches from a hard plastic case (you haven't mentioned what kind you have). Again, this is something that some folks on here have observed. But folks have mentioned scratches in a few isolated locations (like the edges) not covering the back.
I have had a cheap soft TPU case on my M8 for a month and a half, and not a single visible scratch on the back, that I can find.
The dirt/sand certainly makes sense. But I've repeatedly taken out the case and cleaned it, and it appears like I'm getting more of these. The case, is a soft tpu clear case.
Further, I only rarely use this case once a day for an hour when I go to the gym. The rest of the time my phone sits in my leather pouch, which I KNOW there's no way that's scratching it.
It certainly shouldn't be getting marked up like this from such careful use. I'll try to post pics later.

Haven's seen anyone else complain about this. Its especially weird, since you have a case on the phone. I can only guess the finish is delaminating or falling off, regardless if any external wear/contact is present or not.
I'd say its a warranty issue, between this and the letters coming off. But you won't get a new one. AT&T's policy is that you get a refurb after 14 days of purchase. And I've heard mixed reports on the refurbs (on past devices). Some are indistinguishable from new; while others are beat up, or may even have some hardware issues that weren't fixed properly.
A refurb is exactly what I'm afraid of. I don't want to trade in a phone with cosmetic issues for one with potentially worse issues. Any way of getting them to send a new one? AT&T has been nothing short of great for me in the past but Idk about getting a new phone replacement.

Its not in their policy. But you can always ask . . . than complain, kick and scream, etc.
Its also not in their policy to let folks switch to another brand/model. But I've seen that happen when folks complain enough. Highlight how long you've been a customer, if you have multiple lines, etc. Not sure if they have ever sent out brand new phones for warranty claims. But it sure doesn't hurt to try.
Just thought I'd add, I'm having the exact same issue with the Google Play Edition in a clear TPU case too! Were you using a Spigen case by any chance?

Wow, strange, mine too, exact same case. I took the case off the other day to clean it, it was looking nasty, and sure enough there was like some kind of grit in there. I bet that's what's doing it. Of course that's the least of my worries, it fell out of my pocket and I ran this thing over with my tractor, and crushed the side so far that I had to pry out the volume buttons, they were stuck, lol, had tire marks across the screen even. This thing is a tough phone!

Haha, very nice. Good to hear it'll survive a tractor lol. I feel like I should leave a review on that case. It seems to be flawed if it's allowing grit in. I'd consider my use quite typical, not near any sand or dirt. I'm pretty sure that lost me $100 in resellability.
A few people at reddit are reporting that the glass visor on the back of the 6P (on the camera hump) has spontaneously shattered on their phones. The phone was sitting on a table, not being used, and the glass suddenly just cracked.

Oh, thanks, sorry to repost. I looked and couldn't find a thread. It will be interesting to see if this turns out to just be a few unlucky people or a more widespread issue.

Sounds like the kiddos in the other thread bending their phones being careless... just more people being careless. I have abused mine to an extent, wasn't able to bend any edges and certainly haven't broken the glass. I even dropped it hardwood already, no damage.

This is definitely not what happened with the people in the reddit thread. Their phones were sitting on a table, not being handled at all, and they suddenly heard cracking sounds and the glass cracked on its own. So some sort of flaw in the glass or stress from the metal body on the glass (or both) caused the cracking.

Well that was a surprise. For me, and the cat. It was sat on a table next to me when I heard the glass snap, leaving a little snowfall of shavings on the table under it. It's now continuing to crack away to itself.

Sounds like people just want to make up BS just because they weren't careful with their phone
While I am an honest person, if I weren't and managed to break the glass on my phone, I might be inclined to claim spontaneous breakage to get it warrantied. Take this crap with a grain of salt. There are a lot of folks that would do and say just about anything to avoid forking out the cash to replace their phone themselves when they busted it.

I could see this being the case. Drop straight onto the back considering visor is raised from rest of the device.

I fear that. The darn thing is so slippery. I ordered a intelliglass thing that I have on my N5 which works great and keeps the naked look. But I do moisturize my hands a lot these days.

I think that Nexus community is these days worse than Samsung or iphone fanboys. Anything that is pointed out of the device that there is fault is always said "shut up I love my N<3xus" While this 6P is clearly having major design flaws.
And this comes from a guy who has pre-ordered this phone and can't wait to get my hands on it but I don't want to close my eyes of those stupid design flaws.
So far what is it 2 or 3 cases of back visor smashed ....how many phones sold?......user error

We've already been down this road with the Nexus 4. People can put their head in the sand and refuse to believe it, but it is possible for glass parts on phones to break on their own, either due to temperature differentials or flaws in the overall design of the phone body (that puts stress on glass parts in ways they were not designed to handle). If you actually bother to read through the reddit thread, you can see there are a number of people knowledgeable about materials science explaining how this can happen.
In any case, it would be a dumb way to make up a story to try to get the phone replaced under warranty, precisely because people are inclined not to believe these stories and because people lack the sophistication to understand how glass can break in this way.
So, I don't doubt this really happened. Again if you bother to read the reddit thread, you can see the people involved seem credible.
The real question is: Will this turn out to be a fluke with a couple phones or is this going to be a more widespread problem?

I had N4 for a year and then my gf had it. She is not as careful as me. Phone been dropped few times and no problems.
So I really hope its not a problem in here

Yes, just as there were many broken glass backs on the iPhone 4 and looking around a little it seems to be a pretty common problem with the Galaxy S6 and Note5. I have no doubt there will be many broken glass visors on the Nexus 6P, from people droppping it. I have been pretty lucky, with my Nexus 4; dropped it a couple times over the years, even on concrete, and no broken glass back; although I never took the original plastic covering off the back in the hopes that would protect it some.
But, just to emphasize the point, since most people are totally missing the point, what is being discussed in this thread is a design flaw in which the visor shatters on its own, not due to users dropping the phone. This could be due to rapid temperature differentials or to flaws in the way the glass visor abuts the aluminum body and is put under sheer stresses, for which the glass was not designed.

Not that many people have the phone yet. Many people may also not be posting about the issue online. So your "3 or 4" out of thousands are pretty much just made up numbers. Three or four have been reported. There could be more out there. And not that many people have the phone yet. Once the shipping numbers are more in the millions, then will see how common it is.
In any case, whatever happens, it does not mean that it is not a stupid design decision to use extra glass (a fragile material) where it is not necessary. Especially when so many other phones have already demonstrated why this is a bad idea. Even if the spontaneous shattering visor issue turns out to only affect very few people, the fact will remain the 6P is more vulnerable to damage when dropped than necessary. Since people carry their phones everywhere and constantly take them in and out of their pockets, it's a device that should be designed with durability in mind. You can't prevent every accident, but you can minimize the damage they cause.
I wish Google had learned their lesson from the Nexus 4. Sure, a small glass visor is better than an entirely glass back like on the Nexus 4. But it's still unnecessary. I'll bet Samsung will not put a glass back on the Galaxy S7 or Note6, realizing that it was a bad idea like everyone else who's tried it. This will leave only Google with the dubious distinction of repeating the glass on the back of the phone mistake twice. Not only can Google not learn from others mistakes, they can't even learn from their own.
