Windows 8 Phone on Galaxy S3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Started to wander as to whether Windows Phone 8 will be hackable to the quad-core version of the SGS3, perhaps even dual boot.
I know Windows Phone 8 will be multicore compatible, and there's rumours that the SGS3 may host WP8, so is there a valid reason why the AD version of the SGS3 won't have WP8 ported to it?

Windows phone is Closed-Source is it not?

To each their own.

there are rumours that samsung will launch a new windows phone with a similar spec of sgs3 , if that happens then there is a near possibility of having WP(again if there is no copyrights issue). WP8 is no where in the picture yet, time will tell

and what about windows 8 ARM version?

The idea is cool, but I don't want a windows 8 launcher on my phone.
This is a tablet OS

Why wouldn't want Windows anything on ur phone ?

Well, it appears the new Ativ S looks a lot like the US GS3.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57...s-ativ-s-worlds-first-windows-phone-8-device/

The Ativ S looks awesome. I am very very tempted but I'd be lost without Android. Besides, I've only just got my SGS3
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S3 using XDA Premium

no way , with windows closed source
if you are thinking on change android to windows 8, dont do that
the actual windows phone 7 have a huge lack of apps
and it is closed like iOS
and it is very hard to jailbreak

Dual boot woudn't be a bad idea... I was always tempted to try Windows Phone but I think without Android I would also be lost. Buying a phone just to try the OS isn't a viable option

This is crap guys, the hardware is more similar to the us-version of sgs3, not to the int. version... Cause MS will set on Dual-Core (maybe S4 SoaC), so its nearly impossible to expect windows phone 8 on our beloved phone, since the SoaC will be more or less incompatible. Just like it was with Galaxy S1 and WP7. If you have the time and aknowledge, you can compile it for the sgs3, but MS wont do anything, since they prefer snapdragon platform.

Licencing
Windows is licenced. This will never happen here.

Although that would be a nice play by MS to sell Windows Phone 8 as a hardware independent OS.

Whoever is spreading that either has very little technical and legal knowledge or is smoking some serious weed!!
Besides, what do you want WP8 for? If you want it so bad, just buy a Lumia, for God's sake. Android is much better than WP8 will ever be, and those who thing otherwise are just lame.
Useless thread.

Top Tip. Pretend you have windows running on your S3 by massively undervolting so its really unstable and requires a reboot every few minutes

Lol no copyright issue? Man you are talking of Microsoft !!! You can only have copyright issues with them lol...
If you want Win8 on your phone buy one with it inside. If Icould I would get definitely rid of Win stuff but I must use it at work. I'm not naive, Google is hell too, but it's a more funny hell than Win and the other one I can't remember the name.

well
comparison of S3 and Ativ S
after comparing ther Ativ S and the S3 i747
both seems to be almost identical apart from physical view and software (well, no LTE on the Ativ) but... both are real close in specs
only diff i can see a part from the LTE is the cpu wich are the same a part from the "krait" identifier

WP 7 On SGS II

Just wanted to know, if there's any chance we can get a hand on a WP7 build/rom for our phones in future...
Given that samsung is going to release a virtually identical phone with WP7 on it....would be good to have this phone running both the OSs...
(might be a bit of hangover from my HD2 days)
Any comments welcome( please dont make it into a fanboy slugfest)

Probably not. WP7 is closed source and porting it would be nightmare to any dev. I've seen many posts like this all over these forums and they all said the same thing. Kind of like trying to port iOS to other devices. It would infringe on patents etc.

If you look at the earliest prototype versions of WP7, it was run on the HD2. So all the drivers had been developed. It still required an awful lot of development to convert the finished HD7 to run on the HD2.

Drivers for the SoC? Graphics drivers for Mali?
The HD2 runs on a very common SoC that a lot of WP7 handsets used, as it was one of the few certified for the OS at the time.
If we get a WP7 phone that uses Exynos and if the drivers are compatible MAYBE.

If you want to run W7 on your phone, why did you buy an android phone in the first place? If you have a hangover from previous days, why didnt you buy another W7 phone with updated features (compared to your previous one)?
Its the same with people wanting iOS on the SGSII...why not buy an iphone?
I never did understand spending £500+ on this android phone and then asking to change the OS (when you knew it came with android anyway)

Hi guys,
when there will be chance to switch to WM 7.5 from Android, I'll maybe do it and here is why:
I won't buy any new mobile for it's full price, as they are very often overpriced in my country. I made an operator change and I've bought SGS II on a contract for about 120 dollars (who won't buy it then? :-> ). First few weeks I was really amazed about Android, but now I feel it has the same issues as Linux.
Like it or not, I live and work in the World called Microsoft (outlook, excel, word) and cannot switch it for something else. Sadly Android doesn't support them and I think MS wouldn't port those aps since they have their own mobile OS.
In WM all those app are natively inside the system and you get storage in MS cloud. Sync mails, tasks with outlook is way much easier than on Android. So for people like me is Android fine, but missing really important features....

You need to take into consideration that it's Windows Phone 7, not Windows Mobile. It's a brand new OS that's not even been around for a year yet, unlike the old Windows Mobile that has been around for years.
Apps-wise, Windows Phone just doesn't cut it yet, and is playing a slow game of catch-up with the likes of iOS and Android.
I hear what you're saying about WM, but WP does not have that amount of support, yet.

For sure they are, but most of them didn't work well. So sometimes they didn't calculate properly or save the file such, that Microsoft Office can't reopen them. I think this is mainly MS fault, but for me is this the reason, why I will prefer native support...
Just to understand my job: I work with relatively big tables, lots of macros and sources on local network.

Windows 8 on the Prime; Goodbye Android

I'm not gonna lie, Once an ARM release for Windows 8 gets released, I will put it on the Prime ASAP. Why?
I have been following the Build of Windows 8 for some time. I must admit, I am whole-heartily impressed at the awesome features that are coming. The developer tools that Microsoft released will also make it easy for developers to port their apps to x86 and ARM. The marketplace will open up a store that half a billion people could potentially look at.
Windows is the behemoth of the computing age and they are charging directly into mobile computing. I choose Windows over Android because I want more than what Android has to offer.
I want good browsers, application support, enterprise support, and a desktop OS with Metro integration.
If you want to see why I am excited for Windows 8, don't listen to me!
Watch the first Keynote and you will be wowed at what's coming:
http://channel9.msdn.com/events/BUILD/BUILD2011/KEY-0001
Also, here is the Build Blog, where Microsoft is actually taking advice on creating Windows 8.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/
I hope everyone is as excited as I am for what's coming. Remember this: Even if you hate Windows-everything, you should be excited for it. Windows 8 will force Android and iOS to really push harder in creating a full-fledged mobile OS.
The Prime is the perfect tablet for both Android, and Windows 8.

That's a good question. Just like every other Windows release out there, if you are too poor; Piracy is just too easy. But I don't think I will resort to that. Something I have noticed is the lack of mentioning toward different versions of Windows 8. If feels as if there will be the consumer, server edition, and ARM edition(?).
I don't know.

Because why wait? Windows 8 works great on the Tegra 3 chip! 1GB of RAM is plenty as Windows 8 uses less memory than Windows 7. Also, I love the Transformer. I'm sure Asus will release the Prime for Windows variant, but I love Android as well.
In my opinion Ms has missed the train and that they did it twice, the first one being when they left the WM unsupported and went to WP7 there by giving up the lead to the emreging OSs with a very big margin, and now another grave mistake will be if x86 apps will not run on the ARM version, which will need a couple of years to develop new ones, well I can imagine the IOS and android with there aliready big advantage where will they be by than!!.

Microsoft is making a painful transition. They are working hard at porting their full Windows OS onto ARM. I believe they see that ARM architecture will be the future of low-power, high performance computing. They will certainly support Windows 8, but what they will struggle with is convincing all x86 developers supporting the Windows platform to port their applications over to ARM as well. It is not Microsoft's fault that ARM will not run x86 applications; it is a necessity and Microsoft cannot afford to wait much longer.
ive actually been thinking about this. i love android and wouldn't replace it on the prime for the world but would it be possible without breaking some laws? i remember when the hd2 got wp7 there was a few threads in the evo forum saying that since we have the same hardware can we get it to. and apparently it violated "warez" or something so we couldn't. so... if this does come to the prime then it would be sweet but idk if it ever will... (p.s. i could be wrong so if anyone has anything to correct me on then please feel free)
I'm definitely interested in dual booting later.. hopefully win installation will be viable in some way.

I could be wrong about this, but I don't think it's the same case. WP7 is proprietary to Microsoft, which doesn't distribute it freely like Google does with Android. I also don't think consumers can buy a license for WP7 to put on any device, so if the phone doesn't come with it natively, it would be illegal to put it on a non-WP7 phone.
Windows 8, on the other hand, is purchasable buy consumers, so one could legally buy it and put it on whatever device they chose to.

Perhaps. Tegra 3 'Kal-El' is the flagship processor for Windows 8 ARM. I think installing Windows on the Prime will be quite easy as its hardware matches what Microsoft has been demonstrating. I think the hardest thing would be getting the Keyboard Dock functioning.

Agree. Unbelievably "heavy developer effort"... add the fact that WinRT on ARM does NOT include the Win8 Desktop stack.
Consider the Microsoft developer effort to:
(1) Port Office and any(all) other applications to WinRT so it can be used on ARM - nothing Win7 nor WP7 will directly port to WinRT except maybe hello world and trivial apps. Without Office on the ARM tablet who cares.
(2) Port WinRT to the Windows Phone replacing WP7.
(3) Perform a COMPLETE UX rewrite of any required applications to Metro touch to run under WinRT on ARM.
(4) Build, support, maintain developer tools for all the above.
(5) A million other things.
Unless Microsoft has infinite resources, I do NOT think they will be competitive with Android nor Apple for years (if ever) in the mobile space. This comment usually causes Microsoft zealots much discomfort and denial.
Without Office-Touch Version on WinRT the WinRT platform will FAIL worse than WP7 is failing now. Office on Windows 7 touch is an abortion, e.g. Samsung XE700t1a with Windows 7. It is a catch-22 for Microsoft to make WinRT Office run on ARM platform because that may not generate the *required* Windows 8 Ultimate Home Premium Standard Business Suite Server license revenues.
So, today, Microsoft has not seriously accomplished anything competitive in the mobile spaces. In the future, there is infinite work to accomplish any logical road map but no road map has been announced. The Windows 8 Desktop and WinRT bits from BUILD (and after) are pre-Alpha stage.
In the meantime, Android merged tablet & phone OS to version 4.0, and Apple is also busy with hundreds of million mobile phone and tablet customers.
Waiting for Microsoft to finish something is a great suggestion, but version 1.0 is a huge risk too. Maybe waiting until version 3 of the Microsoft phone and tablet? LOL

Nope, everything regarding drivers must be written, kernel, sound, video, wifi, 3G if data version...one tegra 3 machine does not mean another loads. They must be done for each machine. Oh, I forgot touchscreen also. You just can't load it..it must be developed for it.

Yes. Windows 8 would most likely be an OEM-only OS. HOWEVER, The Eee Pad Transformer series will most likely have Windows 8 variants making this hell of a lot easier.
Not gonna like, the metro UI and thus WP7 can go die in a fire, and I mean a REALLY DEADLY one! The blocky TILE interface, with no respect for the ability to get lost in menu's/programs... really sad... I stopped helping friends/family with their WP7 devices after the second week they got them... thankfully most are on Android / Blackberry now... my hate is for the Metro UI, not necessarily the underlying CORE for Win8 and WP7 (the only hate that surpasses that which I have for the MetroUI is the iPhone OS/Software, because the iPhone 4/4S hardware is pretty premo)
However, to give you a counter balance for my above rant, I am currently running the Windows 8 Developer Preview on my desktop, as my ABSOLUTE HATE for Metro UI, it is indeed disabled, and no, that's NOT all there is to see in the Win8DP!
Besides MetroPOS, I love the rest of what they have done with Win8, AND to that effect I WILL be looking forward to DUAL booting (if possible), BUT only if some of the main programs I use see an ARM port since there will be no x86 emulation or back porting! Else the only thing that would even mildly interest me in Dual Booting is the bragging rights to say I have a desktop/laptop OS on a tablet...
So, to sum it up!:
Love Win8
Love DualBooting
Love Android
Love Transformer Prime
Love thought of Win8/Programs running on tablet device
HATE METROPOS (er i mean UI...)
i was thinking more on the line of having both android and windows 8 on the transformer with a dual boot option and when u boot up u pick ur poison
Further to my previous comment, I have been thinking about this, and I think if the opportunity to Dual-Boot came along, I would go for it.
Purely for a full Microsoft Office suite on the Tablet. Then I could leave my laptop at home and take my tablet only!

[Q] Windows 8 on HTC Flyer/View

Ok, just wanted to put this up here.
I come from the legendary HTC HD2 so I know nothing is impossible from win6.5 to android is huge
Do you guys think a port of win8 will be possible? i mean they said 1gb of RAM is enough to run win8... and 1.5GHz should not be a problem if Atom is 1.6GHz, since we can overclock it and stuff..
so, is it possible, or whats talking against it?
Technically, its "possible". But nobody is going to take the time to port Windows8 to the Flyer. Windows is closed source, making porting it over extremely difficult. Plus, there would be no drivers to make the hardware work with the OS. I'm no developer, but the enormous amount of work to overcome these obstacles make them infeasible, compared to simply buying a Windows 8 device (when they become available).
On the other hand, there are developers who will try just for the fun of it. Will it be usuable to the general public? I doubt it....
Somebody tell Microsoft!
Hey this thing is already running a version of Linux, you see any ports to a full blown linux tablet?
Nice idea thou, the new Windows 8 looks to be finger friendly
yeah i know it will be a pain in the arse, but hey - some people like to do this just for the fun and recognition - you know, be the one who finally managed to hack win8 and port it to a android device.
its been done before, and i think many will be donating to help.
its a fun thing.. imagine dual boot
You could install Ubuntu on the Flyer, but for what , I don't know.
Read lots of issues and complaints about W8. Its a ubuntu mini wannabe. Its a nightmare on a pc and probably going to be classified as a cousin to vista. Windows is a mess structuraly compared to Linux, which is Android.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
There are a few reasons why it will never work, most of them people already mentioned
1. You can't compare a 1.6Ghz Intel x86 processor to a 1.6Ghz ARM one, the Flyer is well below the minimum specs.
2. Microsoft will not publicly release their ARM builds, they will only sell them directly to OEMs unlike the desktop version of Windows 8.
3. It's closed source.
4. If someone does miraculously manage to get it running (hey this is xda), functionality will be extremely limited as there is no legacy app support for ARM.
You could install Ubuntu like DigitalMD said and put Win8 on a VM in there.... doubt it would boot though and you would have to find chuck norris and make him round-house kick the lag.
From ALL of the Tablets on the Market, I have checked out ALL of them. The one that I'm the happiest with is the Sprint HTC EVO View Tablet. It's the LOUDEST of ANY & ALL Tablets on the market. Anywhere from a little bit to a lot louder. I know that it's just a 7" screen, but it has the best sound. I would like to get Windows 8 on the HTC EVO View Tablet. i hope that ANYONE can come up with a solution to this. If anyone can come up with a solution to this, then I would put it on the HTC EVO View Tablet ASAP!
It's not possible. Doesn't meet min specs.
We installed it at work on an HP Slate that was running Win7, and it constantly freaked out about the resolution not being high enough. If a device that was meant to run Windows OS is unable to run Win8, it's not going to happen on an Android device. At least not officially.
And considering we can't get an ICS build running, it's a pretty good bet we'll never get Win8 to run.

I have a slate 500. Did you set it to the higher resolution? Win 8 should work, although the screen is a bit off at the higher resolution.
A bit off topic, I know...
Well that was just one aspect of it.
We weren't able to set the resolution any higher then the max 1024x600. It just wouldn't allow anything higher. It *runs* but anytime you click/swipe etc it vomits error messages.
Still, so many challenges keeping it from happening on the view/flyer. It's a pipe dream.
Yeah this ain't gonna happen. Already got a very good , usable OS.
I"d spend my time improving that and creating better apps
Is it possible looking at hardware? Yes, I think so. The architecture should be fine, as there is an ARM version.
However, what do we need?
-Drivers for Windows 8, and if we want to make this work out correctly, we do need the ability to write drivers ourselves, which is a lot of work.
-A custom bootloader. I hope that, after we get ICS to boot on the Flyer correctly, we can work on a bootloader, as it would be really nice for a real tweakers-tablet, so there might be a possibility for this (not giving an ETA, as I don't know how much work it is and it will take a lot of time, don't get excited on this at all...)
And besides, when we can work on a native Linux-distribution, I don't think it's worth it to work on W8, especially because every way we get it running is not legal. Oh, and let's not forget the work it takes to get it to boot, as it would take quite some magic to get a Windows kernel booting.
redpoint73 said:
Technically, its "possible". But nobody is going to take the time to port Windows8 to the Flyer. Windows is closed source, making porting it over extremely difficult. Plus, there would be no drivers to make the hardware work with the OS. I'm no developer, but the enormous amount of work to overcome these obstacles make them infeasible, compared to simply buying a Windows 8 device (when they become available).

Technically possilbe, but it's extreemely unlikely to happen. Especially since windows is in no way open source, and the flyer doesn't have that many modders.

Do you think HTC will release ICS source code for Flyer?

I am wondering since HTC not interested to give us ICS, will HTC release all the source code necessary to build AOSP ICS for flyer?
I'm keeping my finger cross here. I plan to make a petition for HTC to release source code or at least source code for all the driver.
No. Don't waste your time. If anything petition for a full working honeycomb update. Thanks

Waste of time, not gonna happen. HTC doesn't own most of the drivers. Other companies like Qualcomm, Broadcomm, etc. own them. The most important thing HTC would do is write a ICS compatible kernel and they never did that for the FLyer so you are asking for vapor.
I think HTC may be out of business in a year or two. Microsoft just banned them from access to Windows 8 and phone. HTC is headed down and out.
I agree HTC is going down but what is the real impact of not being able to produce a phone with windows 8? so the couple of dozens of win mobile users wont buy htc
still, so sad...
I don't understand how they could screw up like this on the tablet market.
They do excellent HW and the Flyer could have sold much better if they have had the proper price and marketing approach. And a dual-core...
HTC has a very good SW layer (Sense), far better than most of the others on the market. When I tried the Samsung stuff, it was not even comparable.
So why aren't they trying harder?
They could have put those $300M in developers and products rather than in beats...
One smart move would be for ASUS to buy HTC: that way they'll create a real strong team, covering the whole line-up of products from phones to PCs.
Any large investment fund interested in my strategy?

Always nice to get a jab at Microsoft in, but unless Google and friends get their act together on Android updates and app integration with the desktop, Microsoft and Windows RT / 8 are posed to make a big impact on the market over the next 6 months. I'm sure HTC could have used a few hundred million $$ in extra sales for Windows RT phones. HTC management has been making a series of bad business decisions over the past year. They need a change. The market is not very forgiving.
Touchwizis better . Sense only has widgets thatare nice but cause the device to slowdown
Man windows 8 is retarded. What's so wrong with 7? No Aero? Really? And most people who use it say metro is clunky and unnecessary clutter. Google isn't scared of windows 8, microsoft is scared of google, and apple for that matter. How big of an impact will windows 8 be? Well how big is windows phone? Exactly.
I might have met 2 people since 2010 who actually bought a windows phone.
Overall its just too soon for a new os from microsoft. Windows 7 is nothing short of excellent and perfect. And the gap between XP and vista is like 6 years, its only been 3 years since 7 launched. Microsoft is jumping the gun IMO. Honestly I probably won't even get it. At its core its just "6.2" and still windows vista based so I don't see how its necessary for a PC.

I do honestly believe HTC is heading down a bad road. I'm not sure what happened to them. They used to be the truly innovative and hands down best smartphone maker, and made some great windows mobile devices as well as the first ever android phone, and the first google phone. And then they made the EVO 4G, and afterwards everything went to hell. Too many HTC Ecstasy HD names, and too many clones of the same thing. Even the sequel to the EVO, the EVO 3D was a disappointment. And as for the tablets, they pretty much went straight into the market without researching it first, at least thats what it seemed like, but to be fair android tablets really are just now getting to the point where they are worth buying, as many of the old ones would cost the same price with weaker hardware than an ipad, or more if you got one equivalent to. The Flyer was no exception either. And why in gods name would anyone want a blackberry rip off that runs android and has a facebook button? Too many stupid products and clones of the same thing, thats why HTC is where it is now, and why Samsung has made the past 2 google phones.
And I really don't get why they thing sense 4.0 is less intrusive, its every bit as intrusive as the sense 3.6 that is running on my phone. They made a few graphic tweaks, and removed the clutter from the notification bar, and called it less intrusive pretty much. Overall if you want a more pure google experience HTC is still the last manufacturer you buy a phone from. I mean overall yeah the only way to get a pure google experience is buying a nexus no doubt, but for example after you get past the iphone-ish look of the launcher, touchwiz isn't very intrusive at all. HTC really seems to make you want to forget your using android and your using sense os instead.
That being said I don't hate sense, its actually grown on me quite a bit, but one thing I do notice on my Vivid, is if you dare to use a 3rd party application instead of a sense one, expect nothing but problems. You change the launcher, you'll constantly get the "launch by default" popup every time you hit the home button. You change the keyboard you get lag. You wanna use GOSMS instead of the text messenger built in, its slow to load, and seems bugger than you remember it on your Samsung phone.

As to HTC releasing the files for ICS, that question assumes that HTC ever had ICS in development for the Flyer or View. I don't think they did.

They could if they wanted to, but:
1. New software doesn't always run on old outdated hardware. Its been that way for decades.
2. 99% of users don't give a crap about what version of Android they are running. Many normal people don't know what version of OS there is on the phone, or even WHAT OS it is.

Yep. Intel is being lame and spewing BS.
Dual core makes a difference. You want proof install watchdog on a device with a dual core and without a dual core. The single core model will get alerts of apps that are misbehaving and using too much CPU, the dual core never well, as no app can seem to use that much CPU.

I imagine someone could MAYBE...edit that requirement? If it was a simple enough check and installation, but it takes that much for the system itself, then nevermind. I imagine, however, that someone will get it working with a simple browser and some office apps (so a stripped version that might boot?).
I mean, one can dream...

You misunderstood Ubuntu isn't trying to say that you need at least 32gb of storage to install ubuntu. The future high-end ubuntu pre-installed phones will be at provide at least 32gb and the entry-level ubuntu pre-installed phones will be at least 4-8gb.
As you can see it says "Operator and OEM partners"
And If you read the rest of the page you'll see those informations are for manufacturers and operators.
And no operation system except windows has such thing(there may be an another one, but who cares). Mac OS 10.7 is same on every mac. AOSP 4.1 is same on every android. iOS 6 is almost same on every supported device except Apple's marketing cuts

Thank you SO much for clearing that up, I was beginning to get anxious with thoughts like "my Nexus 4 is already so obsolete that it can't run a recently made mobile OS?!" which really troubled me and I'd love to see Ubuntu Mobile on the Nexus 4 - after all Galaxy Nexus users can't have ALL the fun
For the record, I wasn't saying that Ubuntu couldn't be installed on the Nexus 4. The way I had read it, there were two editions of Ubuntu Mobile: one with desktop docking mode and one without, the former having steeper system requirements. I was saying that Ubuntu could still be installed on the Nexus 4, but only with the edition that lacked desktop docking mode.
Hopefully leventccc is correct and those are guidelines for what future phones will have, rather than the minimum system requirements of the OS. That's probably right, considering Ubuntu on the PC only needs 5GB of storage.
Do you think we'll be able to easily dual boot JB/Ubuntu or will we have to pick one over the other. I could live with 8gb Android / 8gb Ubuntu partitions. However if Ubuntu requires too much space that'd be a tight squeeze.

If my nexus 7 can do it with ubuntu (not even mobile), n4 can do it too.
Here
Even though the "Nexus" thing is a huge point, my gut says that we MIGHT not get Ubuntu unlike G-Nex. Ubuntu might have been working on this before the Nexus 4 would have launched and so used the Galaxy Nexus as it would be cheap + open. Now that the Nexus 4 is out but as hard as hell to get it and then make the OS work on it from scratch would be pretty hard. Thus I fell we might not get it. But I hope that this is wrong.
Well one day to go before the major Ubuntu announcements at CES.

There will most definately not be an official image for the Nexus 4 in the coming months. Why should Cannonical waste resources on porting Ubuntu OS to other phones when the OS isn't even feature complete. They want to get an image out so people can start testing and develop apps for it. The Galaxy Nexus is dirt cheap, most developers have a GNexus anyway. So if they do that, they reached their goal.
It's not like they are trying to gain market share by getting the 2% of Android Users who root their phones to install Ubuntu Phone OS on their device. They won't come very far this way. The main path to the market is through handset manufactures and Ubuntu Phones in stores.
The image you will get for you Nexus 4 at some point will be community driven.

Face it the vast majority of smartphone users are NOT geeks. The average user wants Facebook, WhatsApp and [insert popular Android Game here]. CyanogenMod is the most popular rom by far.
Compare the number of downloads of CM to any other ROM.
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
There isn't any other ROM that has downloads that are in the millions.
MIUI and AOKP are doing OK but the rest is just not worth mentioning.
Not even on the PC, where it is much easier and pretty much riskfree, people bother to change their OS.
Otherwise the Linux Desktop marketshare wouldn't be about 2-5%.
The average consumer simply uses what he gets from the store.
