Busy signal type noise after making a call. - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Sometimes as I'm making a call and am disconnected due to poor service or hanging up too quickly, my phone will get almost a busy signal. It won't stop until I've rebooted the phone. I'm rooted on viperrom but it happened even when I was 100% stock. Any ideas on what's causing it or a possible fix? Thanks!!

I got that too before I was rooted

Have you had it again Lou?

Bumping. would like some light shed on this issue

Not sure this really helps, but I have seen this twice recently. Its quite annoying, though I can't complain otherwise. I thought my of evo was a good device, this thing is awesome and its still stock!

I can confirm that my wife's phone has been doing this too, and hers is not rooted. I suspect it's a software issue, but the fact that it doesn't stop, when you shut down the phone, makes me wonder if it's deeper. I'm trying to decide what to do, because I was about to cancel the insurance, but not if i need it to replace a defective phone :/

This happens to me more than twice a day. Almost all calls placed from my house give me this tone. I'm past my 14 days, so I cannot return it for the sgs3. I honestly do not want to return the phone, but this is just ridiculous. Random 3g dropouts, an annoying tone on 50% of calls, and my phone will become unusually sluggish throughout the day. All of these problems are fixed with a reboot. It happens on stock and vipermod. I'm not sure about aokp or cm9. I cannot place a call with either of them. Anyway, I cannot believe a fix has not been released by htc/sprint. The xda community already has a fix for wallet. Sprint and HTC need to do something. My next purchase will be a nexus phone, after 5 HTC devices.

Wiretap
Poorly implemented federal wiretap. Go about your business as usual.

I got my phone on release date and never once had that happen until tonight. I noticed my signal was jumping in and out of roaming and everytime I tried to make a call, roaming or not, it did the busy signal thing. I called Sprint and they were looking into an issue with the tower I pull from. The same tower has gone down 4 times in the past 8 months, and everytime it goes down it is 3-4 days without service for us, it is getting really annoying.

Definitely not an HTC or evo specific issue. Had this happen to me a few times and the wife's s3 and a viper in the last few days

Turn off the roam guards. I had this same problem when I was on vacation. Once the roam guards are off you will be able to connect and not get that annoying busy signal.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2

I made a thread on this not knowing this one was existing.... I believe I pinpointed it only happens when and if u place the call your signal bars drop to none at that exact moment it does something within the modem and cause this tone of death I call it....
Nothing fixes it but a reboot.
HTC BETTER REALIZE THEY ARE PISSIN PEOPLE OFF, THEY BETTER FIX THE SIGNAL Issue before people return this thing..other than that love the phone..
I truly believe half of it has to do with slow network and weak towers Sprint is just trying to catch up after all these years

I'm getting them also with every Rom I have tried. I'm on the EVO 4g lte. I have asked about this problem a lot and no one seems to answer.

My phone is doing this with the roam guard off, and when I have 6/6 or 5/6 bars. Service at my house is very spotty, and 5 out of 7 calls will fail. In areas that I have good service about 50% of calls fail. I never had this problem with my EVO 3d, and my father has never had this issue with his EVO 4g. I'm ready to take this phone back. It's ridiculously annoying, and the only way to fix the issue is to reboot the phone. Also, I'm frequently not receiving calls in areas where I should be getting "good" service. This is obviously an issue with both HTC and Sprint.

On top of this issue, I keep nit getting phone calls. My wife calls me twice everytime she calls and the first one almost never rings. Who knows how many calls I don't receive in a day.

Same here. I've had a few clients tell me they've been trying to get a hold of me, which is a bad thing. Anyway, I contacted Sprint, and the rep told me to take it to a corporate store to swap phones -- something I don't really want to do. She informed me that this issue is not widespread, however, I've been reading about the issue on a few different forums.
Edit: for some strange reason I haven't had this problem in a day or two. Hopefully it stays this way.

[Q] 4G cutting out since 6/4

Ever since around the 4th my 4g has been acting up like crazy. I live in Hollywood so I don't think it's a verizon issue. Has anyone else been having problems? I'm thinking maybe it was from an app update with a glitch in it? My phone is totally stock but I have around 400 apps (I know, too many, I can't help it...) I've gone through all of the app permissions looking for an app that can change my network connections but no luck so far. I know this is kind of a shot in the dark but if anyone else had this happen and figured it out that would be great. I'm open to suggestions.

The My Verizon App was recently updated (and removed the homescreen widget, so I didn't update mine), so that might have something to do with the problem.
Does 3G work fine?
I have been having this same problem, so is a friend on another device. When we switch to 3g, 4g never returns unless airplane mode is cycled.
My my verizon app is up to date but I still have the data widget. I haven't updated the "location agent" one though. I'm not sure about the 3g working...the 4g symbol just comes and goes so fast I don't think the phone has time to switch onto 3g. It doesn't happen 24/7 but when it does it's like a non stop cycle of on and off (like an app struggling to do something)..

So my daughter just recorded a 10 min video on its a small world. Next time I check my phone I have no 3 or 4 g just bars. I don't think anything of it until I'm elsewhere and my wife has 4g and I don't. I cycle my 4g widgetsoid and get service. Screen off and on and no Vs again. Airplane mode, same problem. Finally I put it in airplane, powered it off and did a battery pull. It's fine now.
I've tried turning the phone off, fully restarting it, pulling the battery, and cycling through airplane mode but I haven't tried pulling the battery off after powering down while in airplane mode though (that was a mouthful). Maybe that's the magic combination... I'll give it a shot and see what happens, thanks. I'll post if it helps out or not.

Had the same issue sporadically. Only app I've added since then is Firefox beta but seriously doubt that is to blame.
Actually had this issue this morning for a bit, then resolved on its own.
I have been having the issue of my 4g randomly dropping, 3g not kicking on (just signal bars), and the 4g coming back when it feels like it.
I did a battery pull, cycling the 4g, airplane mode, etc. and still having the same issue.
This started around Verizon's useless upgrade.

I also have had the worst 4g service the past week or so. I have a htc rezound and live in the suburbs of Detroit, MI. I have tried everything under the sun but cannot get it working. This is obviously a Verizon issue, because it started happening out of nowhere. I didn't download any nee apps or change any system settings. I don't understand why this is happening. I do not want a refurbed phone so I will not send mine in for a replacement. I'm sure that wouldn't even fix the issue. Verizon needs to get to work and figure this out.

My 4G is fine and I'm rooted and running a custom ROM (Ineffabilis 1.4).
Have you checked if 4G is enabled in your settings?
(Search for 4G toggle in the Play Store)
Some people reported that their phone disabled 4G in the settings for no reason.
Everything was fine for a couple days then all of a sudden it started acting up again...I have a feeling it's the new draw something free app...maybe..

Good to see I'm not the only one.
Any other Verizon devices that can confirm this?

Ok, so I've had the issue that the OP is talking about since I got the phone like 5 days ago. Since I wasn't rooted (and still aren't) I decided to call Verizon about the issue. I've talked to multiple Verizon techs and after they had me do basic steps, like checking wireless networks settings. Nothing they told me I hadn't tried myself already prior to calling them. I even got a replacement BRAND NEW rezound and sim card and am still having the same issue. I have decided to try and figure it out myself and have been running various logcats to try and narrow the issue down. Problem is I don't really know how to read these logs too well. If there was someone who has more knowledge in reading logcat logs id be happy to upload or send them to you if you think you can help. Any help in resolving this issue would be awesome as Verizon seems to be unaware of the issue up until now and I would like to resolve it before I root. I'm going to give them a call tonight and explain some of my findings to see if they can give anymore input or get me to a higher lvl tech.

According to my findings, it very well could be. I'm thinking it may have something to do with vznavigator. But don't quote me on that as from what I said before, I don't know how to read logcats too well.

EVO 4G LTE Call Connection Problems

Hello, Thought I would post this to see if any one else out there is having the same issues I am having. I have 1.22.351.3 update, I am stock, not rooted (yet, waiting on S-Off with new firmware) I am on 3G only, no LTE, I have 3-4 bars service on my phone, but on 35% of my calls (outgoing or incoming) when I pick up the call or place one, the phone says it is connected but all i hear is silence. I can hang up and call back immediately and the phone works fine. This happens 4-8x per day. My wife has older Optimus phone and does not have this problem. Has anyone else experienced this? It makes me wanna throw my phone through a window.
Chewboxa.
I haven't experienced that. If I were you I would take it in to get looked at or at least try a factory reset.
"We're coming from a pure power source"
My EVO does this same thing. I figured it was just Sprint's service. It is very frustrating. My phone is HTCDev unlocked and rooted. It did that on 1.13 and on 1.22. Same issue with different radios and roms.

Similar issue I just posted in a separate thread. Calls never come through or the connection is so bad I can't have the conversation. I was rooted then took the OTA. Started having issues after that.
There's a lot of widespread tower issues so it seems, in Arizona at least.

garbled distorted calls

I am having trouble with distorted or garbled phone calls. I have wiped and reflashed the latest Mean rom. I've also flashed the latest radio and PRI, as well as updating profile and PRL. I cannot get this problem to go away. Some times it is clear, but mostly it is garbled.
Anyone got any ideas? I thought about an APN problem, but I haven't messed with APN'S since my old g1 days and I am not even sure the evo lte uses them (or even where to find them) .

The last radios and pri update was buggy. That's why you have distorted phone calls, it has nothing to do with Rom. Hopefully , sprint will fix it soon.

Hmm...its very garbled. Basically unusable. Although I haven't heard about bugs in the update, it doesn't seem right. If everyone had distortion like I am experiencing there would be a revolt.
Thing is, at times it is clear. I flashed an old nandroid and it was gone. Then went back to mean rom and it was back. Wiped and reinstalled mean rom and it went away for a bit, but now is back.
Even stranger, calls to my Google voicemail are perfectly clear. Turn around and call some one and it is garbled.
May call sprint and see if it is a configuration issue. Pissing me off.
And it's clear again. WTF??!!
Wonder if these darn tower upgrades are responsible.
The last poster read my mind, as I experienced that here in LA. As soon as Sprint started upgrading the towers in our area, the voice garbling began, and after much complaining to customer service, Sprint sent me a free AIRAVE.

I can tell you this has nothing to do with rooting, roms or the like. I have a completely stock EVO Lte that has never been rooted or even plugged into a computer! My phone is completely stock and I am having the same problem with my phone. If I make a call and the call quality sounds good to me, it will sound bad to the other person. If I make a call and it sounds distorted (garbled), it sounds fine to the other caller.
I am getting completely fed up with this phone. I called sprint SEVERAL times to get a replacement because of the wifi/gps problems, and I insisted that I did not want a refurb phone. The rep said it would be a new phone (after many HOURS of phone time with Sprint CS) What they sent me was a refurb, and a POS at that! Scratches, loose back cover, the red around the camera flaking off! I am not going to accept it and will be returning it tomorrow at the Sprint store! I am going to call them while at the store so they can "hear" my newest complaint!
I tried to swap this phone within the first 14 days, and the Sprint people insisted that it was just them working on the towers, so I waited. Then after that 14 days window was passed, all the CS reps said was "if you would have returned it within the first 14 days..." Makes me sooooooo freakin mad!!!
If your reading this, and have the same issues, it is your phone. PERIOD. Call Sprint or go to a retail store and complain, complain, complain!!!
It's the Network
My wife and I have both been having this issue a lot recently. Me on my E4LTE, and her on the Galaxy SII. I really think it's the network, not the 4G. We started having the issue right after Sprint started their HD Voice upgrades. Sometimes calls are perfectly clear, sometimes their slightly garbled, and sometimes they're completely broken up. I'be been through the ringer with Sprint's Tech support with no luck at all. I think I'm going to switch to Verizon once our contract is up (which is a shame because I was very happy with sprint and the EVO up until this problem).

Resolved: Anyone having issues with Text Messaging?

Non of my SMS are being delivered today. Anyone else having this issue?
EDIT: Having the same issue with whatsapp messenger as well.
99.5% chance its sprints towers. Update prl and profile, reboot, wait it out. Your surrounding towers are probably being worked on. It's one of Network vision "side effects"
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Simple PRL and profile update will fix it 99% of the time
Any other ideas? I've done many PRL updates and profile updates, hard boot and soft boot and went from tower at my work to tower at my house about 45 minutes apart, and SMS still not going through.
My phone is working fine in terms of data and phone calls etc, just no SMS. Whatsapp seems to have fixed itself as well.
I've had really annoying texting issues. Probably been my biggest issue with this phone -- I guess it could be due to network vision upgrades, but it started happening right after I purchased my EVO 4G LTE. Mine hang sometimes, then other times it'll send the same message 10 times.
The only issue I've had to where it just won't send at all, even after a restart, is with my airave. I've had it happens a few times -- my texts will hang indefinitely (arrow animation never stops) until I unplug my airave.
I had issues with sms not sending today also. But I'm sure its b/c of them working on the towers LTE.because about 3 times since last Saturday I had LTE for like 5 minutes or so then gone.but sms working again now.

Oh, okay. Color me convinced.
Funny you post this, mine are not working well this afternoon.
Just curious, are you guys using stock or custom rom?
Stock.
Anyways, I called up sprint and they were able to help me out. At first he said there was a cell site that was being worked the tech did the troubleshooting, asked me to reboot and I am able to send and receive test messages
Out of the blue I'm now unable to send text messages. :crying:
I can still receive them, just can't send them. Hopefully it's something on Sprint's end and it works itself out in a days time.
I found out I was unable to make calls as well. I restored a few previous Viper 4G nandroid backups to see if that would help, but no luck. I finally restored all the way to the stock rom w/ root and I was able to make calls again. A fresh wipe and install (not restore) of Viper 4G and I was back to not being able to make calls. Guess it's stock rom for me for awhile. Classes started today and I won't have as much time to play.
And stock pooped out too. Must've been a fluke earlier.
Things now work again. The fault is all on Sprint's end. Stupid Sprint...
I hope there's a silver lining and it means I'm getting LTE sooner than later!
Its network congestion most likely, in my experience sudden roaming or network dropping in and out in a well covered area means repair or upgrades which now that I think about it could affect text messages as well

Why all the complaints ? This is a lot to do with user error

I'm stunned at the constant complaints... I believe half of.. everyones issues are due to screwin around and f"n up their phones ,not reading stickies ,,rules , not.knowing...compatibility
The other half is probably defective devices NOT all of us have issues I've had none
The 122.651.3 has bettered the performance no WiFi 3g drop
Great battery from day 1 anyways !!
Root went well on this update providing you follow closely to the procedure.

Network issues.
Welcome to Sprint
I really haven't tinkered with much of anything on my phone and I find the most recent OTA to be MUCH MUCH buggier than the previous version. Before the update I never had Sense crash or any other programs crash. Now they happen once or twice a week (sometimes several in a day). Add that to the fact that I am not S-OFF and I have a loathing hatred for this most recent update.

Sorry, but I'm not convinced that my text, roaming and dropped call issues are solely due to the upgrade. You guys can keep screaming that all you want. And I'm not saying that there aren't instances where that's the case. My wife has a shift and isn't experiencing these issues. I've also read about other evo owners with two phones or other sprint phones in their household -- none of which are displaying the same problems.
Again, I'm not saying the network upgrade isn't causing any issues, but it's a bit aggravating to see people post that in every thread containing an issue that can even remotely be attributed to the upgrade like it's gospel.

Go get your radio tested. It takes 30 minutes at a sprint store. You don't even have to unroot it. Hell, tell them its rooted so they don't mess with the software.

Yep, pretty odd that my network problems started the same day I bought this phone. Op, Your is working great. Good for you but please don't treat the rest of us as retards. This is my 6th android device. Only one of them wasn't on sprint network. That's only phones I didn't include tablets laying around the house. Nook colors and kfs for the kids and wife.

For those not aware...the EVO LTe is set up out of the box to work on LTE and Enhanced CDMA (for lack of better term/knowledge) Also know as Network Vision, or the upgrades.
In cases where an older phone connects and the EVO LTE does, I have confirmed the EVO LTE is connecting to a network type called ehrpd. This network is not yet active in most cities. The older device confirmed to be connected to CDMA and receiving normal 3g.
This is the reasoning behind changing the network mode to cdma only, as many of us have seen that it forces the phone on to CDMA and not ehrpd.
I hhonestly have no idea what I am doing, but this is what I have found in my hours of testing side by side with older devices. From what I can tell every LTE device Sprint carries has this issue, but the other devices appear to lack the ability to switch.
There are also other issues that can contribute to texts and data.
This theory also works in reverse. If I am in an LTE area and on cdma only data and texts are wonky and I have to switch back.
Moral of the story...handoff could be seriously jacked up. I remember Verizon and ATT having similar issues during buildout. You would think someone had figured it out by now.

Dudes Sprint is upgrading 38000 towers its common sense that your going to have some connection issues and aside from that people living in high populated areas if one of the towers goes down for the upgrade the other ones are going to have way more traffic hence your problems......... I'm pretty sure that's right? And also if you if you can make calls and not receive calls or text but still have data your on data only o. O

A lot of the data/sms/call signal issues can be attributed to the current state of network upgrades, though it's obviously impossible to say 100%. In my experience, the network-related things have worked fine from day 1 (July 19th). That said, I have noticed actual system bugs. For example there was a time when I was using Talk (I hardly ever SMS anymore, Talk is way better IMO) and the text in the app became just a jumbled mess of pixels. Took a reboot to fix but it was still weird. And a friend of mine who got his Evo LTE a couple of weeks before me, his phone just started spontaneously overheating all of a sudden yesterday. We suspect a rogue app getting stuck in a loop, but still that's not a good sign; it should have been caught by the OS and at least thrown up a message to kill the offending application. Again, a reboot fixed it but I'm not really keen on that being an actual solution as opposed to a temporary workaround.

This makes the most sense of anything I've ever heard. If sprint would have said cdma2 or something, I wouldn't have had the opinion I did in yesterday's post.
Thanks

If you want to run your own tests, I use network signal info, open signal maps and an app called "network" to find all of this.
I forward everything I find up the chain of command at Sprint but not sure where it goes or what comes out of it
