pinhole light leak (pics) typical? - HTC Amaze 4G

Hi everyone, I just got my HTC Amaze yesterday from Mobilicity. I came from an Evo 3d, so this isn't much of an upgrade but I'm enjoying my new phone so far!
However, one little thing is bugging me. There seems to be a pinhole in the side of the phone and it's apparent when the capacitive lights are on. I can see the light leaking through. Pics attached.
Is that a manufacturer's defect? Or is it typical?
I'm still within the timeframe for a refund/exchange, so just seeing if it's worth exchanging my phone...
EDIT: Apologies for any confusion. I meant the small pinhole of light on the edge of my device. I've updated pics to emphasize the part I'm referring to. The screen bleed isn't a huge issue for me, just that little pinhole of light that annoys me.

Only light leak I get is the buttons leaking onto the screen, but it's no anything bothersome, only shows on dark backgrounds, you should get it exchanged if possible.

^ thanks, yea i read about the light bleed at the bottom and I have some of that too. Doesn't bother me. But that pinhole really does! Will try to get it exchanged. Gotta work on relocking bootloader and unrooting then.

Lol, use hasoon's tool to relock and browse into system/app with a file explorer, delete supersu.apk and reboot, to unroot.

You can exchange all you want but you will still have the leak. I have one same area as yours on two devices and vote showing leaks in upper right and bottom right. To be honest it's really not that bad though. Phone has good power so I tend to let the leak not bother me

Hm maybe it's more common. Possible QA issue perhaps?
I guess I'll give it a shot to see if I can exchange and hope for the best!

i had the same prob on my first amaze. it was way worst than yours but i got it replaced from t-mobile. that phone had a lot of problem.

If you use speedrom by eclipsremix the tweaks in the settings menu have an option to turn off the bottom button lights which will get rid of the bleed. At first it is a little ruff getting use to not being able to see them real well but after a day or two you get used to where the buttons are and you won't miss the lights at all. And actually it may be in the energy rom also bit I'm not 100% on that. But definitly works on speedrom. It's a great rom too especially if you like aosp. Very fast smooth and very nicely themed

This leak isn't the fault of the buttons but the screen itself escaping at the side for some odd reason.

Mine has a small amount in the lower left hand corner. I think its fairly common. My mytouch 4g has the same issue too, but it doesn't bother me with either device

Yes I saw that in the pic you posted but there is also bleed from the bottom buttons. If I were you I would try to get it replaced and when you do then you can turn off the bottom lights to prevent bleeding on the new phone.

Will try to talk to the store to see if I can get an exchange on Monday.
I unlocked my bootloader via HTCdev however. If I relock it now it'll show "relocked" (as per other threads)... will they refuse to exchange my device because of that? I think not because they're unrelated.. any thoughts?

If they're anything like t-mobile, they wouldn't check or care, since the device is gonna be refurbished and sent back as a replacement to any customer with device issues.

Version 02 - Display is crooked

It seems that HTC has done it again... I know the possibility for defects are possible when mass producing anything, but my new EVO 3D display is crooked. Though it may be slight, once it is noticed you can't stop seeing it every time you use the phone. Went to Sprint corp store and with much hesitation from the manager, I was able to get them to exchange the phone. The only bad thing is, my new phone also has a slight lean to it (though better than the previous.) Really disappointed with HTC
Yup didnt notice it for weeks then one day i noticed it and i was like wow!

The fact that the NS4G (despite having an equal-or-better meter) dropped and bounced even more calls....which sucks, cuz that screen and camera are awesome...even though it feels cheap. It was fast...mega fast for a 1single core...roms a plenty...AOSP to the core...everything I wanted except a god damned signal.
It's nice to have a weighty phone in my pocket again...reminds me that I have a phone in my pocket at all times, lol.
It's good to be back. Lessons learned, etc etc etc. Plus that puts me that much closer to unlock day....and I'll probably trade this up ($350 trade in value) for an Nprime when it comes out--unless Samsung manages to bungle yet another radio.
I have version 0002 and my screen is fine. Man, I keep reading about all the problems you guys have and I think I understand what is happening. When you guys order your phones or go into a store to get one, they run a retinal scan on you to identify you as an XDA user and then get your phones from the reject bin or something.
I mean statistically speaking, there is no fricken way so many of you could have so many problems. It would mean like 1 out of 3 phones are defective or something.

LOL!
I have a version 2 hardware phone and the screen is perfect.
Between myself and my friend, we have four Evo 3D's, all 0002 hardware and all four have the crooked screen. The worst part about the crooked screen is that it throws off the touch, especially toward the bottom edge of the screen. When you touch a part of the screen, the touch point is actually off just a little because the digitizer where you touch is straight but the LCD underneath is a little off.
From what I've seen, only 20% to 30% (at most) of the 0002 units have a straight screen. The majority are crooked.
Mike

if you broke the screen they wont replace it, if you dropped it in water they wont replace it, etc. if it is a defect issue NOT cause by youthey will replace it for free! ive done it on my hd7 and almost on my mytouch 4g. Im on prepaid. you might have to make it seem like the problem is worse than it really is and tell them it isnt usable.
Also, I think this is funny and messed up at the same time. they have been using different screen since the desire, incredible, etc. making AMOLED and some SLCD then stop making AMOLED then producing 2 different kinds of SLCD for phones is freaking retarded. they should stick to Sony or something. my sensation had a amazing screen, didnt bother checking which one it was though. my mytouch 4g had a horrible washed out screen and decided not to bother replacing it and just get the HD7 and my HD7 had dead pixels and the digitizer was messed up just like on my sensation. Hopefully when i get an Amaze it wont have any of these issues. It seems there is always a issue with HTCs screens, i wonder if they ever browsed through XDA before lol.. they should glue their digitizer PROPERLY to the LCD so no dust gets through, or screen bleed, etc. or just go with LED since they are mostly stuck to the digitizer. my brother incredible has an amazing screen with no issues, its an AMOLED.
Well I have a problem with games being unplayable because the touch screen keeps freaking out when I start playing. Was that the problem you had and by returning it your got it fixed?

AUO here, not liking the video quality in Netflix and the text blurring when scrolling. would be curious if the Amaze is built with anything but the AUO, would like the Sharp screen as they tend to have better quality at the expense of viewing angle.

no, they will not. it voids the warrenty. you will have to relock it and unroot it, in other words restore it completely stock. also, never mention you have had it rooted. they wil not replace it, with my experiances that is.

Well they may look for it, if they've been told to. And they have this whole "unlocking ur bootloader and possibly voiding ur warranty" set up for a reason, and the only 1 i can think of is to get more money from us for repairs by making themselves no longer liable to honoring a warranty. [Q] Third Verizon Replacement

I needed a replacement device due to heating and finally my third device is spot on except it had pink keys... grrrrrr.. what's the general consensus, should I deal with it or ask for yet another one?
Took me three tries this week. They also have warranty replacements that are new. They get them from htc to build stock when phone initialy released. It's not new in a box but its new. Way to tell is ##778# call, then press view then display. Look at life counter, it never resets even after ruu, wipe, etc.
First two I got had 100+ hrs usage, my third was a new one. No usage perfect keys

Both of the replacements are new but the one with perfect keys overheats batteries on a dangerous level. This one just has fugly keys... like really really pink, almost white pink. Think it's worth harassing them again? I'm slightly worried they will stop sending me phones.
They won't stop sending you phones (I've never reached that point) I went through 4 Rezounds for dead pixels. My keys were a bit pink, and I didn't want to deal with it again. Just think of it as you're not afraid to show your feminine side . Seriously if the phone isn't over heating at all, just deal with it. if it bothers you that much you can open the phone and use a red sharpie on the leds. Or if you know how to do it, you can remove the white leds and add red ones. Just search it and the thread will pop up.
Personally for the money I'd bug em until I get one that works. Mine is red with no temp issues so they do exist.
Eventually they will start offering other phones. Many have gone from the rezound to the gnex or vice.versa that way.
I would be completely happy with a great piece of hardware that had slightly pinkish buttons. As android hobbyists, we require better hardware for a few reasons. One reason is because we know enough to notice imperfections. The other is we are pushing them harder to utilize such powerful hardware. If you have a perfectly running phone that you're happy with performance wise, I would rather keep that than trade in the device for something with a bigger imperfection such as overheating.
As a sidenote I noticed the capacitive buttons were extremely bright. When I changed the capacitive button lighting from bright mode to dim mode they didn't only look better when turned down, they looked very red and lost the slight pinkish tone.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
I don't get why anyone cares about pink keys. It's such a non-issue that I didn't really understand what people were talking about when they said they were sending their phones back for it.
i really think you people are ridiculous for sending a phone in just bc the buttons are pink...
I don't. I would absolutely tell them your keys are pink and you bought a phone that's supposed to have red ones... If the keys are defective. I wonder what else would be.
I paid full price for mine... My first was (i thought was messed up and so did the reps) good, this one is the 2nd I've had and its perfect (it was also brand new).
I was in the store and over heard them telling someone that they might be charged for a defect because they had sent in two before (not this phone, I think it was the nex). I just thought to myself. I'd send a million in until they get it right for the price I paid for this thing. It's ridiculous for anyone to think they have to accept defective devices they spent 800 dollars on. Now if it was given to me i wouldn't care in the slightest.
Maybe HTC will make the next one better because they get so many exchanges.

Id ask for a new rezound, not refurbished. It just depends on what rep you speak to. They actually are offering me a razr maxx becuase of the battery issues ive been having. My first rezound too. Just be firm but polite as well.
I've gone from fascinate to droid charge to rezound by just asking for a different device after the 3rd refurb. You should be able to get anything but a razr maxx.

I'm not sure if I would want anything else honestly, I meant the galaxy nexus has MIUI and CM9 but the hardware on the rezound is so much nicer >.< Also it ended up having a bad front speaker and I couldn't make phone calls. Dead Pixel Galore

Was watching the raven on phone at work last night and had to turn brightness up high since its so dark. Noticed about 50 little white dead pixels all over the screen.
Anyone else have this? Checked this phone when I first got it and no dead pixels at all. Makes me mad I've taken so good care of this phone. The display is ruined now for me.
I know now that the raven sucks and this display burns out too quick for whatever reason. Never had this issue with any other phone.
You need to return that thing, it's clearly defective. And as far asa burns out too quickly? That's obviously an opinion not based on facts... I have had my LTE since May, no dead pixels. Not one.
Word of friendly advice, when you take that jacked up phone back to the store for an exchange.... Before you leave with the replacement, go to the market and get the dead pixel tester, run it before you leave the store.
I'm just gonna keep it. Already s-off and all that, this is my 3rd EVO LTE. Can only see it when the screen is black and brightness is all the way up.
I'm really leaning towards getting a *gasp* Samsung for my next phone. I love HTC and sense, but there are so many issues with this phone u need to mod, dwnld app to fix phone, flip into/out of airplane mode to get data, and not to mention my first 2 exchanges.
Sorry this is so "ranty". This phone is like that super hot/cool girlfriend that has crazy issues that really get on your nerves, but u keep her around bc she is there and you've been thru too much w to get rid of kinda thing.

It is going to bother you when the room is dark. I've had 3 evos so far due to dead pixels, the third one was prefect. You can downgrade the hboot now and obtain s-off so there is no reason not to find the perfect device.

displays are where HTC sucks. I've been through about 8 replacement G2s , and literally only one or two didn't have any dead pixels , and those have touch response problems. heck even one of the replacements came in the mail with a burnt-in display.

This one didn't have dead pixels when I first got it. I remember checking it. Best buy ***** wouldn't let me check the other phones, said I had to take the one she pulled put. I asked y and she said it will start activating when she turns it on. God that pissed me off she is either stupid or I am for letting her get away with that comment.
Needless to say, this one was perfect then. So that means over time a new one will only burn out like this too. Probly just wait until it gets really bad before I exchange it. Everything else is great. Feel lucky.

I am now on my first evo4glte since launch and have not had a single issue except browser reloads on the stock shipped rom.which made me split decision with a galaxy s3. But to be honest , after rooting both devices I find the evo more fun to play with. And has never gave me any sort of issue. Wifi/3g works as it should. Nothing ever reloads, the screen is still amazing with no dead pix or blurring of the screen.
I'm sorry some of you guys are so unfortunate to end up with 2+ replacements, giving you a bad experience with HTC. Some devices come defective even the iphone5 & sgn

If you're getting exchanges that aren't new, the reason why you're seeing so much crap is because the refurbs aren't repaired or checked carefully at all.
My replacements were brand new phones. Didn't even have refurbs then, was in early June, early July. Got my first EVO on release day.
So, I just discovered that I have a dead pixel. Can only see it when when the screen is black. It's only one that I can see. Is it worth trying to get a replacement or getting it fixed? Can't they replace the screen?

Onex+ touch screen issue(we need to report for hotfix)

Ok, so me and another guy did some tests with the onex+ touch screen and found out why so many of us have issues with scrolling, we need as many people as possible to report the issue to HTC so we can get a hotfix, i dont think HTC realize at the moment, this is what to do, type in on th phone keypad *#*#3424#*#*. choose more, then choose the screen drawing option, dont draw, just touch it with your finger and see if there is a white dot, if there isnt then touch another part of the screen and then see if the previous touch shows up, if so you have the same software issue as many of us, its quite possible that its a major hardware flaw and cant be rectified in which case HTC will have to do mass repairs or recall, we are not going to stand for this at a price of £500, if you have this issue please report on HTC website, either email or chat or phone call, it needs to be done or we will have scrolling issues time and time again on each update.
What touch screen issue are you talking about? I've not heard anything about it from anyone on here. I think mine is fine. Or maybe I haven't noticed it yet.

Me and another guy discovered it, trying to sort out our scrolling problems, as of now theres an issue. 4 people have the exact same issue so far and i bet theres more.Test your screen and you will no for sure. Its causing random clicks and rubberbanding when scrolling, its not all the time and probably wouldnt notice it unless your a heavy user(always on your phone)
you have the same software issue as many of us, its quite possible that its a major hardware flaw

Yup, I noticed it too. It's gone now, since I switched over to CM10. It makes no sense! (See what I did there? )
I think I'm that other guy OP was talking about. I have this scrolling issue where stuff on screen are being selected or clicked on accidentally instead of scrolling though them - but never had this problem before I updated to the most recent firmware, so I'm pretty sure this is a software thing.
Best we could do right now is report to HTC.

Oh, so switching to a custom rom solves it. Must learn about those stuff then.
Had very similar problem on the sensation. Ended up being a bad ground. It was easy to fix because you could take the cover off. Small piece of aluminum foil or solder fixed it like new. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17072026#post17072026
Also i assume you guys are talking about the international version..? Anyone with US ATT version experience this issue yet?
Rant: These forums need separating... Nothing is interchangeable between the two phones..

It would be nice to know if the problem shows its ugly head on the lte/4g versions, its def got to be reported, if its hardware they will have to recall or fix them, and they cant turn away people who are rooted or have custom roms if it hardware. Hi sharpshooterr, yes op is you, i couldnt remember your name untill i seen it lol. Same test on the onex with android 4.1.1 with sense 4+ shows the screen is perfect, theres not even any lag when drawing either. Things like this shouldnt be getting through quality control on high end flagship devices, really shows HTC is going down hill fast.
As of now i think your testing might be a little flawed, you are using the wrong test. This is a line draw test, not a touch test. Its liable to act the same for everyone when just touching. How does it draw for you? Draws fine for me. the thing about touching then touching again and both dots show is not any sort of test IMO because again this is a LINE DRAW test. Maybe download some of the touch and multitouch tests from the market and try those.
Dont get me wrong, if there is something wrong then it needs to be addressed. I applaud you for trying to bring it public. You should look into some other tests though. HTC will not pay any attention to this issue if its brought to them like this. Get some more info, more tests, different tests.. The more the merrier
With the information i've read here it does sound software related though.. custom roms can fix it and firmware updates can break it. Doesn't sound hardware to me.

Ok, ive tested the same drawing test screen on the onex, doesnt happen, soon as you touch the screen it registers under your finger, the screen has to register the first touch in that same spot your finger is on no matter what your doing, this is why its clicking in other places and rubber banding when your scrolling, its registering to late, and the line drawing lags like f---k. When your drawing your keeping your finger on it so its going to register eventually in the place you want it, its no good when your scrolling. Ive reproduced the same in gesture search, and again on the onex it doesnt do it in gesture search. Keep in mind there both running android 4.1.1 with 4+ sense, the only screen difference is the glass. If what your saying is true then the onex should be the same way so i know its not down to he test app along with the other tests ive done. Eitherway theres def a problem with scrolling.Your probably right about HTC not doing anything.EDIT: Ive decided to refund or sell it and carry on using the onex, it just seems faster, battery last longer.

No... But thinking on it I may be a bad test subject since my phone is now rooted, bl unlocked, and running an insertcoin rom. I've had the phone for about a week.

With the exception of insert coin my phone is the same. I do not have this problem. Something is wrong with the rom, your kernel or your phone if you are having touch screen issues.
I am unlocked, running elegancia, rooted. I do not have TWRP flashed as there are issues charging when the battery dies. Even when i did I never had touch screen issues.
Multi touch is useless also, only 2 fingers register, on a brandnew high end device and it only supports 2 finger multitouch, oh yes, i have a touch screen app that actually registers a soon as you touch the screen, but its only one app, all others i tested do as i described so i really do not know what to think, its def not hardware, its down to the software, we should get 4.2.1 soon and hopefully it will be gone, as the op said, i dont think HTC will do anything, especially now i found an app that makes the touch work as it should. So, basically, dont worry to much, its not the hardware. Ive boxed my onex+ back up and im using the onex untill new OS, i might even flash stock nexus 4 OS on the onex.

To get the device to register more than 2 fingers go into settings -Display, gestures & buttons - turn off under gestures - HTC gestures (uncheck) this will give you up to 10 multitouch points.

I think what he said is absurd, I didn't disable HTC gestures and enabled "show touches" under developer options and the screen picks up my 10 fingers.

wow absurd huh? I can confirm that it is NOT absurd and works the way he posted it... even if you hit show touches in development, and leave htc gestures checked, none of the multitouch testing apps pick up more than 2 touches... even though you can see more, they dont register as touches in apps and games.. So... in order to have the full 10 point multitouch, no matter how absurd you think it is, HTC gestures must be unchecked.. Google it

You misunderstand, I'm saying that it's absurd that boe323's saying the device can only support up to two touches and multi-touch is useless. Since you yourself said it will register up to 10 touches with the correct setting then it IS absurd that he claims it can only pick up two. Even the HTC gesture settings clearly says 3 finger-touches so that in itself made his statement of only two-touch support absurd.
It seems that you think I'm disagreeing with ihavoc, you should improve your reading comprehension.
