Rooted RAZR's not getting OTA? - Motorola Droid RAZR

Here is a conversation I had over at Motorola Live Chat. Looks like If you rooted your phone your not going to get the ICS update over the air
Denz: Hi, my name is Denz. How may I help you?
ME: Oh hi
ME: I want to know what the problem is with the ICS OTA for RAZR
ME: Why havn't I recieved it?
Denz: We apologize for the inconvenience. Please allow me to assist you with that.
Denz: May I know your location?
ME: Phoenix
Denz: Please provide the serial number: Go to Settings, About Phone, Status, get the IMEI.
ME: serial number of my phone?
Denz: Yes.
ME: ***********
Denz: I will need to check some performance related information from your device will that be okay?
ME: what are you checking?
ME: Data speeds?
Denz: I will need to check the eligibility of your phone for ICS
ME: oh ok
Denz: Thanks. One moment.
Denz: Has the software been modified?
ME: Software?
Denz: The operating system. Have you "rooted" or downloaded a 3rd party OS/software/
ME: Im not very techie what do you mean?
ME: Oh I ley my brother root my phone
ME: So I can't get the OYA?
Denz: I see.
Denz: Hold on.
ME: OTA*
Denz: You still have the option the option of sending your device in and paying for a repair evaluation. The flat rate repair fee for rooted devices is currently the same as the Out Of Warranty fee That's $159 plus tax.
ME: Repair what?
ME: My phone works
Denz: Yes, the only way we could get it back to the original version so you can get the ICS update is to send the phone in.
ME: Lol how am i supposed to get phone calls from important ppl?
ME: you guys are funny
ME: Ill ask my bro what i need to do
ME: Thx for the help anyway
Denz: I understand where you're coming from. Prior to the update and since we released the phone, we had
Denz: advised phone users not to root the phone because they may not get future updates.
Denz: I'm sorry but you have the option to send it in.
ME: lol wish i got that advise. ive been getiing system updates
Denz: I mean specifically for ICS update.
ME: Thats fine no problem im sure my brother has a solutuion
Denz: Okay then. Is there anything else you need assistance with?
ME: No you have a nice day sir/ma'am
Denz: If you need any more information get in touch. Thanks from Motorola, bye!
Ignore this !!!!! I received the download and I am still rooted. Well don't ignore the fact that the Moto employee tried to sham me out of 159 bucks also ignore my bad grammer plox!
So if your phone is rooted you may or may not get the OTA ans WILL have to sideload.

It doesn't really matter if you've already side loaded now does it. Don't worry with silly moto. Just do with your phone what you wish and forget their silly nonsense. And I'm with the countless others that have stated in other threads. I believe they have some kind of tracking software that they aren't telling us about. I'm not saying its the same as carrier IQ but I'm sure its something similar.

That's crap I had my phone rooted prior to .181 and I got the ics OTA. Granted I lost root after .181 and I did a factory reset before getting .181. So that shouldn't be the problem.
My wife has a maxx and has never rooted or anything ans she still hasn't gotten ICS

It is ofc bull****.

Well, from what I've been reading... If ur phone is rooted, you cant even side load ICS. So it would make sense that they wouldnt push the ota to a rooted device. I'm sure they have a way of knowing if ur rooted or not..
That being said... Theres always the option to flash back to stock, and wait for the ota, or side load it. I personally chose flashing stock, then side loading. I like fresh installs, especially with an upgrade this size. Less variables = lees chance for errors... but thats just me

Lol well know they have my serial number and the fact that im rooted so ill have to sideload later tonight when i have time. I also may wait a few days just to see how accurate this employees facts are.

that is not true...i used razr utility to reverty back to stock .181 and had re-rooted it....then side loaded the official OTA .211 with razr utility 1.7 .....not a problem since !!!
just one thing i havent figured out is, how do i go back to stock .181 so i can recieve the OTA, like i said, i have had not one issue with sideloading it myself but i would still like to see the actual OTA...it would satisfy me lol

..

I too was wondering. My folks got the OTA yesterday, on non-rooted MAXX's. My MAXX, rooted, has nothing.
Am I out of luck, and will I have to side-load the ICS?

I guess the question is anyone with root not in soak recieve OTA yet?

George: Hi, my name is George. How may I help you?
Tim Timmons: I want to know what the problem is with the ICS OTA for RAZR
Tim Timmons: I still haven't gotten it, but my folks with MAXX phones, have.
Tim Timmons: and we live in the same town
Tim Timmons: ??
George: Sorry for that wait
George: We do apologize for the inconvenience. Do not worry, we will do our best to assist you on this.
George: Let me check that for you
Tim Timmons: thanks
George: Now I need the system number of the phone just for a documentation purposes, May I have it please?
George: The system version will be Setting > About phone > System Version
Tim Timmons: XXXXXXXXXXX(IEMEI)
George: Thank you
George: I have tried to check this information in my end and I regret to say that we do not have the exact date about when will be release.however the Update is been going on at the moment. .the update will be pushed out by Motorola in batches to all users over a few week time period. So kindly wait for the notification to be send to your phone.
Tim Timmons: 6.12.181.xt912.verizon.en.us
Tim Timmons: But how is it sent - by locale, or what?
Tim Timmons: and how did you check? You asked for version info, and before I gave it to you, you had a canned response....Can you check again, please?
George: It's gonna be send randomly
George: Yes, I was able to check with my system. sorry, i only needed your system version for documentation purposes.
George: The update will randomly send by our Engineer. And it all users will receive the update batches to batches in over a few week time period.

Just went to Moto's website and did the chat with rep. They explained to me that they are still doing just the test users at this point with Verizon customers and that I will most likely be receiving it over the next couple of weeks.

The "Supervisor" I spoke with later was able to tell me that they can check via a application they have, if I am rooted, my IP, and a few other things.
And......those that are stock, rooted, will not get the OTA.
I don't know whether to wait impatiently, or attempt side-loading ICS.

I just talked to them to and the serial number some how tells them that the device has been rooted.
I even unrooted just to see.

Well i think im just gonna sideload ot anyway. I just need to find the best barney style instructions. Im rooted, i dont use roms so im stock so i just need the best surefire way to make this happen. Sounds like to me though, moto and Verizon are punishing root users for no reason. I love moto phones but this may be my last one that i buy.

Pretty sure I saw a few posts in the forum from people who got the update while rooted, just they lost root and rerooted.

so it sounds like they can tell if your rooted and even if you unroot with voodoo ota rootkeeper they can still see that your phone is root and maybe they will not be sending out the ota to us rooted folks so maybe it is wise to unroot for a couple of days or a week just to see what happens

Leak was worst mistake ever!

I know its been hashed a thousand times, and this thread can be deleted if its too redundant. I regret thoroughly getting the 2.1 leak on my wife's phone. I love my rooted eris and ELB rom has made it absolutely functional and keeps getting better with constant updates and feedback, while my wife's eris is stagnant and hopeless. Constant dropped calls, and sound outages, and I cannot get a replacement because Verizon's system doesn't show it on 2.1 so until it is (which cant be done because we cant get the OTA when you have the leak) they wont even consider sending a refurb. To make matters worse, even if I could get a refurb, they are coming shipped with 2.1 that cant be rooted. At least if I got a refurb and the problems continued we would be able to complain enough to get a discounted upgrade maybe. I don't think anyone is working on this issue anymore as the phone has been left behind in the dust without root, and I don't blame them. I would too if I was a dev. I will NEVER NEVER install another leaked ROM. I will always be patient enough to wait for root. Yeah Frisco you were right, and all the others that waited patiently. Sigh OK done venting. Now to go "accidentally" drive over my wife's phone and pay the damn insurance.
I too regret installing the leak, however I have had none of the problems you have described. My phone may be a bit sluggish at times, but I've never had a dropped call since I've gotten the phone, or any other problems for that matter. Sorry to hear your having ask these problems though.

I didn't have any problems whatsoever with getting a refurb while I was on leak. I called them up and mentioned having a couple of the common problems(I actually did have issues), told the guy that I had done the factory reset and it hadn't helped and the new phone was on the way. Sorry to hear that's not how it happened to work for you. Did they specifically say they could tell she wasn't on the OTA? I'm surprised they were able to tell with the similarities between the two versions. Maybe you can try and install the OTA manually on hers and A) see if it helps in general, or B) see if Verizon can tell she has the regular version then.

As far as I know, you cannot upgrade to the ota if you are running one of the leaked roms because of the hboot version.

Acutally you can go OTA from one of the leaks, just not root from a leak. Now going OTA does not change the hboot version of the leaks, so even with the OTA you cannot leak. But if for some reason you want the OTA instead of a leak ( and with V3 leak they are the same anyway) follow this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695593 make sure to read it all, but from what I have read and understand that is the offical OTA release that can be manually installed on the phone, so if it ever needs to go back to verizon they cannot hit you for having unoffical software on the phone
Ah, this I did not know, but very useful. Thanks for posting the link.

If you want root that bad, you can do like I did. I had Leakv1 on my phone and just went ahead and loaded the new RUU OTA update onto it. Found someone on Craigslist that was willing to sell an eris that had the OTA on it for like $150 and ship it to me. Rooted it, then put my old phone on ebay for auction. It sold for like $170 with free shipping. Everyone came out happy and I got a rooted phone and like $10 in my pocket.
Be careful when buying phones on craigslist/ebay/etc. and look out for those Bad ESNs.
Anyway, just another option for ya...

[OTA UPDATE] 45.2.5.en.US

It looks like Motorola has officially updated the device. I found it about 2 hours ago when I was on the road. To my surprise, there is still no thread on this that I noticed.
Hopefully, we can get some info on this update as it pertains to those who either root or unlock. I don't have the information but hopefully, someone will brave it and attempt to get it. Such questions that I would like to see answered include:
- Do you lose root after the update?
- If you lose root, does the dock root method still work? Does the dockless method still work?
- If you installed bootstrapped or unlocked recovery, does this update cause any problems? Are backups made before the OTA still good to use after?
Well, for those of us who are dock rooted, or at least for me, I can say that the update goes seemingly through the entire process and then it comes back and says that the update failed. I check for updates and it is there again asking me to try. Not sure what's up.
This is new and exciting.

My phone updated yesterday and I lost my root. I will try the photon root method again to see if I regain root. I will keep you all posted.
if im not mistaken this is the ota.. on which i can confirm that afterwards you can root again. its just like any other phone tho updating will kill root
Well it will not update for me. "Update failed" every time. I am dock rooted and installed boot strap recovery (CWM). Any suggestions?

Welcome to last week!!! j/k. I am glad that you finally found out about the official update. FYI there were tons of threads about ppl receiving the official update. It may not have been on the XDA sites but some of the other fan sites like androidforums, sprint users all posted that the official release was out since last tues, 8/23.
Yes you do lose root but you can just re-root it to get it back. Just do the dockless root. It is wayyyy easier since you don't have to go to a website and dl the tar file.

Okay. Some people are in serious need of a freakin CHILL PILL.
I got my notice of an update a few hours ago. I came here thinking XDA was the place, the hub for this kind of stuff. I checked like the first 20 threads and there was nothing. Neither I nor most other people are going to go through dozens of pages to look for info on this especially when as I typed the subject, XDA's search returned NOTHING.
And a note to the mods, there have been a lot of unfriendly BS answers to very good questions as of late. If a blind eye is turned to it over and over, it is gonna cost XDA it's title in the minds of many that this is THE place for information on the devices that it covers.
So enough of the unfriendly sarcastic BS answers. There's no need for crappy answers like welcome to last week especially when such a post doesn't come with a link.
That said, I will try this one more time. When I try to install the update, it always says update fails. I rooted with the dock method and installed the bootstrap recovery. Does anybody know what could be causing this to happen?
If you are having problems then flash this.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202666
Final build courtesy of the fine folks at MOTOROLA 8/11/11 The sarcasm was in fun. But on your end just think of how annoying it is when this happens on a daily basis. Take a couple of minutes to look through development and see all the crap people have posted. You'll see how cluttered it can get. We do appreciate that you meant well.

Maybe the difference is the bootstrap recovery installation. I rooted with the docking method but didnt install a bootstrap recovery. The OTA update went perfect today. Maybe it succeeded because i didnt have the bootstrap recovery installed? A possibility?
If you have updated webtop (dockless connection), your OTA update may fail. Replace the files with your original webtop files and the OTA update should work.
OTA update speeded up my photon
My photon is opening apps, emails, and web pages 50% to 100% faster after running the OTA update.
Holy smoking photons! My phone is BLAZING fast, google maps and navigation are nearly instantaneous, YELP populates in 1 second!!!
Isn't this just the leak from 8/11/11?
I don't understand the big deal, or why an OTA update of a leaked rom two weeks ago is being talked about in the development board?

Did you uninstall any system apps after rooting? If so, those will need to be restored.
When you try the update how far does it get? If the phone reboots and gets to the Android guy with the progress bar just press and hold both volume buttons at same time and it will show you the error message.
My Phone was Rooted using the Dock Method... installed the update without any issue and Re-Root it using the Dock method again. Everything still runs like a charm.

DROID X2 minor update (1.3.418) is NOT live

UPDATED 3/25/2012
Talk Android, in the article below, mistakenly stated the update was for the X2 was live. Turns out not to be true.
http://www.talkandroid.com/99664-droid-x2-minor-update-1-3-418-is-now-live/#.T2HsKEGxFI4
I'm so avoiding this. Anyone else that decides to be brave and apply it, let us know the following:
Can you root with Zergrush
Can you SBF back to 2.3.4 without bricking your phone
Just for S and Gs, see if the bootloader is unlocked. I doubt it, but maybe a dev did something stupid? If so, save that update!
Thanks iBolski. (Or should I say Mr Ambassador )
If anyone has a phone info screen shot, that would be nice to see.
Also confirmation that VooDoo works?
Thats all the update brings? Why bother?
I am (just) thinking the kernel will be better for my Mx2 "Nandroid port".

I am signed up for the soak and I have not received it yet. I also tried to force the update to my phone just now and it is not pushing it.
I am going to be brave on this one because I have a back up phone I can fall on if anything does go wrong, but I am pretty much ready to just drop my DX2 like our Ambassador and just use something else until my upgrade....
I will let everyone know as soon as I get the email for the soak or if I can update to this at some point today...
Security update! I do not trust those bastards. I hope someone tries it so we know but I don't wish anyone to get stuck without root or able to sbf. Need a normal user that does not care about these things. I will not get close to it before we find out what it does.

do you have the Android SDK on your computer? if you do just go into the folder where it's stored:
if windows C:/SDK (i believe)
if Linux /home/yourname/android-sdk-linux
it should have fastboot within there, but i'm bad at explanations, so iBolski'll walk you through it better than I can.

From what I understand, you do the following, but back everything up to your external SD card first (do a nandroid) and you must have the Motorola USB drivers and Android SDK installed. Of course, since you've been flashing and SBFing, you definitely have those already installed:
Have your phone hooked up to your PC and type "ADB REBOOT BOOTLOADER"
The phone should reboot into the bootloader saying "Starting Fastboot Protocol Support"
When it's rebooted into the bootloader, type this in your DOS command window: "fastboot eom unlock"
Read the warnings. This WILL reformat your phone so be sure you've backed it up.
Tap Volume Down to switch to "Accept"
Now press Volume Up to actually "accept" the warning.
After that, you should be unlocked and formatted IF the bootloader and kernel were unlocked.
I could be wrong, but that's what I've read before.

For those of you considering doing the update, you might want to take a look at these two threads on RootzWiki: rooted before update and important information regarding .621 update (I'm sure there are XDA equivalents of this by now, but these are two threads I'd been following previously for my brother's DX.)
Apparently using OTA rootkeeper (and ADB in some cases) it should be possible to keep root after the sbf *IF* you have SU backed up on /system/! SU cannot (CAN NOT) be restored from the SD card. Of course, any SBF/factory restore will lose SU and you'll be SOL until that gets sorted. Another problem (for us) is that we do not yet have an SBF file for this, so if anything goes awry, you could (potentially, not necessarily) be looking at a nice expensive paper weight until the SBF gets leaked.
This was also mentioned in the DX information thread, but if anyone is brave enough to update from rooted stock (using OTA Rootkeeper) and could get a nandroid, it could potentially be useful for anyone in the know (read: devs) to see what has changed in the update, so that we can examine alternative root methods. Unfortunately, most devs have moved onto newer/better phones so this may take a bit, but there is still a lot of dev for the DX (and the dx2 of course) so hopefully we can get something going (and presumably any exploit found on either phone should hopefully be useful for the other.)
Hey ibolski if VZW is reaching out it's a good thing.. Even if nothing is going to change in terms of their policy. Take the opportunity to reach out to them and let them know how we feel. Perhaps they can understand or at least listen to how HTC customers can feel better about unlocked bootloaders.

I've tried. After I started doing that, the replies via twitter stopped. Figures.
listen I'm not saying anything, but just mentioning: I just tried to root my dad's Droid 2 Global and bricked it because the D2G got a "security update" around a week ago that kills root (Duh) and if you try to sbf back down it causes the phone to hard brick.
Now that may not be the case with this- who knows, that particular update went from 2.3.3 to to 2.3.4 and obv this one probably isn't going to update the kernel/bootloader/god knows but even still I find the closeness in time for these two OTAs suspicious, so be careful my flashaholic friends

[Q] Few questions dealing with Droid DNA

I'm not sure if all of these have been addressed or have a direct answer, but I just wanted to compile everything into
a concise post that I can refer to.
I SHOULD be getting my DNA in the mail today and it SHOULD be fresh out of the box and I am basing the questions off
of that.
Reason for rooting is mainly for the wifi tether app, since I have unlimited data and rather use that then pay for actual service.
1.) Since it should be fresh out of the box are the chances of it being unupdated likely? If so this means I can root it, correct?
2.) I'm pretty new in the rooting field, having only recently rooted my thunderbolt. How comparable will the process be to that?
I had to backdate the software or firmware to be able to do so and am hoping since this is new it wont require that.
3.) I haven't messed with roms too much and was looking at the ViperDNA rom, what would the perks of doing this be? Cons?
I may have future questions later, but this is all I can think of atm.
Thanks ahead of time!

I can almost guarantee you that the OTA will be installed on it and you will not be able to do anything with it until an exploit is found.
The root and S-off process is very easy if you are on the old firmware.
Crap, really? It's the same, power on + vol down process correct?
Even booting up the phone, this is talking if the OEM isn't updated, won't auto start the update, will it?

Well I'm hoping that it will be this way. Should definitely be getting it today and will check it out.
If I can't even root it, I don't know if I will even be activating it.

Boot it up without the sim in it. Let us know, as of last week I would have told you that it's probably not updated. But its been a few days since I've known anyone that got one new in the box.
If it's not updated and you would like me to help you pull and supercid and unlock just send me a pm. If you get offered the update you will want to defer it like 5 days I think is the most it allows.

Got a few -new in box cause I convinced a few retarded reps referbs were the issue- from Verizon n one from amazon. All 2.04

Yea, I just got it an hour or so ago and booted right into the loader and asked in the IRC and I guess the OTA
was already accepted, so I'm sol for a bit.
Not even going to bother activating it, since I mainly use root for tethering.
I picked up the DNA in San Diego from BB for an upgrade on Verizon. It came with Software 1.15.605.4 710RD. I've s-off'd, root'd & TWRP'd with ease. Now I just need CM10.1 and I'll be happy.
I might fly to France and b-slap the CEO of the company who put the DCMA in.

[Q] Still no one could unlock the bootloader of Photon 4g 2.3.5 OTA?

Alright so new member here i have been using XDA to unlock and flash zip, kernals etc in android devices since 4 years.. i would like to thank this site :good:
Now straight to my point
Okay so I bought a Photon 4g 2 weeks ago and my bad luck its on 2.3.5 (I dont know if its factory 2.3.5 or OTA because i bought it from a friend who knows nothing about it) which means its bootlaoder is locked for good.. I did the ReservedOdm check and got "30000000000030003000100000000" which means =Electrify who performed OTA update to 2.3.5 and now stuck never unlocked) As the thread says.
Moreover I saw this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2072644 by @nickman529 and I was really shocked to see that a 45 pages thread with skilled people couldnt unlock the 2.3.5 version of MoPhon. (I did not read the whole thread but i guess you guys couldnt found a solution) So my question is still in 2014 there's no method to unlock this beastly phone? an updated android OS is a must for this phone. We should do something as there are hundreds of people still waiting for XDA guys to come up with a solution.
I am not a newbie in this developing thing nor I am a developer I know In's and outs of unlocking etc.
I would really appreciate if XDA skilled guys will work on this again atleast we can do something? unlocking a bootloader of a phone is not impossible right? just that we need to work again on this. I want to get this done. Thank You :good:
Some details of my phone:
I flashed superuser with "Photon Torpedo Direct" method so I have root enabled
Build: 4.5.1A-1 SUN254_13
2.3.5
Hope I will get some replies as this is my first thread on XDA

i am afraid to tell you brother but there is no development under process of photon 4g the people on 2.3.5 are locked for good and its a misery for the developers too that they couldnt unlock it.. A replacement of another new model will be the only way to use new android versions lol :good:
check out Motorolla Moto G it has official upgrade of kitkat its affordable too :good:
photon
.. I've photon 2.3.5 and locked for sure.. hoping on dev to get a way out there..
come on guys I've got a few posts on here over the years about this lol I have a new account here since so I don't know where all those posts are.
sadly I have no clue what I did or how the heck I did it!
I bought the photon the day after it came out and used it for quite a while on sprint. I received the ota update to 2.3.5.
then when my contract expired I spent hours and hours and finally rooted and unlocked my phone and put it on straight talk. it was on the ota update so I was told I wouldn't be able to do it but somehow I did.
more recently I have a new issue with mine which is why I am back on here again but I am very disappointed I never had the chance to figure out how I did it.

brother we are talking about the bootloader unlock of photon 4g devices on 2.3.5 please clear that did you unlocked the bootloader or just unlocked your phone?? and whats your the problem you are facing now? let me know. I can help
I can't guarantee but I figured what I did would be called unlocking the bootloader. I do know I received the ota update as I remember having trouble with the phone after doing it so I was on 2.3.5 for sure. I do not remember what I did when unlocking it but it was completely factory plus the ota when I started and by the time I was done I had root access and I was running cm7 and I could put in my straight talk sim card and I had talk, text, mms, and data. that would be an unlocked bootloader if I'm right?
what I'm facing now is I get a message saying something about the modem did not start when ever I try turning the phone on.

if you have your photon with you right now then take a look at its bootloader open it and it must say UNLOCKED if not then your bootloader is still locked..
so the modem error comes and the mobile doesn't works?? I think its a hardware problem as far as i know
yea it does say unlocked in the corner of the bootloader screen.
I got the error when I tried flashing an update to my ROM. I don't know whether it flashed something that did that our if it was just coincidence that something went wrong with the hardware at the same time. I tried flashing it back to the old version and that did not fix the problem.

what really? it says unlocked that it means the bootloader is unlocked how the hell did you unlocked your bootloader on 2.3.5? you have to remember it brother?
I honestly have no clue this was only like the third phone I ever unlocked and I've done dozens since. this was back right after the ota came out.
all I remember is I spent days and days trying to figure it out. if I had another phone I might work on it again as that's a really nice phone but I don't really expect to ever land on one of them again.

I have an OTA-locked one that's fairly cosmetically beat up. New replacement battery. USB port cracked off just enough that normal USB cables work but car dock does not. Otherwise I *think* it's fine - I gave up on peetr's decrapped stock ROM, which is good I gotta say, and bought an unlocked one on eBay.
I'd give it to you free but I am literally sweating out my rent check. Would you be willing to part with $25 for it, includes shipping?
A friend brought me a photon of his he is wanting to use with straight talk Sim , It is on 2.3.5 ota I believe but don't know . Have tried to unlock the boot loader but keep getting (FAILED (remote: (00180001))) when I try to get the unlock key. It has root but does not register the straight talk Sim and I felt unlocking the boot loader would help me fix this issue but am finding I can't .can anyone help am open to any suggestions. Pls know though I am still learning how to use the adb, fastboot, and know little about rsd (can't get it to even pick up the phone)

Hi guys, I'm new to ARM devices, but I have a lot linux experience and a fair amount of Android experience, as I've done some device porting work at android-x86.org.
I was recently given a photon 4G with a locked bootloader, 30000000000030003000100000000
My question is, what is so special about the bootloader that it can't be replaced by another bootloader. I was just looking at the thread to put Arch Linux on the Photon, but that thread seems to have stalled and I can not ask any questions there because I do not have 10 posts yet.
I am guessing the kernel image cannot be replaced with a locked bootloader? I read the post by peetr_ about SBF's & CG's & signatures, but when are the signatures checked, at flash time or every boot? I dd'd the boot partition to /tmp/boot.img and pulled it to my linux workstation but I've not been able to mount it. Mount thinks it's NTFS, is that what a .smg is? NTFS in some sort of container?

Funny how we're all in some way participating in all this work that manufacturers should've done, and a lot of us are broke.

Forgive me if I'm telling you stuff you already know, but here are a few random tidbits of info:
The OTA update blew a hardware fuse which somehow prevents bootloader unlock by any known methods
The only ROMs that can be flashed with the bootloader locked are ones using the stock kernel as-is, like peetr's ROM, so I think your guess about the kernel image becoming set in stone is correct.
Don't know anything else but I also have an OTA-locked one which I could run stuff on and get you output, if you want it, and an unlocked one (pre OTA update) running CM9. As long as it doesn't mess up my devices I could provide you with debug info.

I will try an remember to get back to you
there is one thing I was just thinking about that I do remember thinking about afterwards. whatever I did that made it work may have stemmed from what I later discovered was a corrupted file. I remember downloading file after file and trying to flash dozens of different files. every time I was getting all sorts of errors. suddenly tho I got a different error and after that when I would try throwing commands at the phone I would get completely different responses. my memory is very limited of it all but I thought I was completely screwed.
somehow tho I suddenly had a phone with the pre ota software on it.
whatever exactly it was that I messed up I have no clue without trying to re create the story.
