[Q] different recoveries... - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

So from my little bit if reading through Samsung it seems that the only recovery everyone uses is cwm.. are there any other options like the 4ext? Or atleast cwm touch?

I was more or less asking if it was possible because I'm new to Samsung and all I see is Odin cwm in the Samsung forums. I'm coming from HTC so my knowledge is back to ubernoob when it cones to root. I know this phone is new, hell big red isn't even out yet so I wasn't like Wtf how come it isn't done yet.

I would wait a bit to install either of the cwm recoveries. Neither one work 100% yet. There are some issues with both.

With the responsiveness of the CWM touch, I would really rather stick to the volume keys, its much simpler that way, although if a phone comes out without volume keys, or capacitive hardware buttons, I guess this would be the only solution.

When it comes to my recovery I want less fluff.
I'll stick with volume/power buttons for as long as I can.
Does look interesting but idk if "fancy" is better for recovery purposes.

I don't think I would like CWM with a touch screen as well as I like using the volume keys.
I love the idea, but I would rather see it implemented in the way that the Galaxy Nexus has it. Hopefully we get it on our version of CM9, whenever it hits.

When I first got my Android phone, I thought how ghetto it was that you had to use the volume keys. My recovery for my Kindle Fire is touch, love it way better!
That Galaxy Nexus version is sweet!! I wouldn't mind that!

If u don't read it in the development part of the forum don't do it. You will brick your device and nobody will care. Just read the forum and u will know what u can and can't do, simple as that. READ!

[Q] Kernel questions

I'm thinking of installing flapjaxxx kernel on my i717 running black star x, will this dump my current settings and contacts?
And what are the steps to do this (running cwm)?
It shouldn't. All I did was boot into recovery, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, then install from sd card.

I bricked my phone, I want to know why
Hi.
First of all I apologize for my not so good English.
The thing is that I hard bricked my note i717 by flashing a wrong kernel and now I know that JTAG is my only option, but I want to know if they are going to be able to bring my phone back to life, I don't live in the US that is the reason why I want to be 100% sure before I send it.
I was experiencing some problems with the USB not being recognized by any computer, after searching and reading a lot of post it came dawn to an incompatible kernel (something to do with the fast-charge option) so I´ve tried to flash a fast-charge compatible kernel but I downloaded it wrong and BAM!!! my phone is just a brick now (kinda useful to hold the door)
Full info:
I had the stock AT&T rom, then flashed some other roms without problems until this one:
cm-10.1-20130304-experimental-quincyatt-m2, that's where the USB problems began... after that one I had pa_quincatt-2.57-20120122-201611 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1686320)
My question is:
Is it possible to connect the device(you know the JTAG method http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0SX3iDuIZc ) now that it is hardbricked even if it wasn't recognized before bricking?
I appreciate the responses in advance.:laugh:

As a complete aside, how do people manage this? I mean obviously blindly flashing anything that's a .zip, but do they find them on other forums or something? They always manage to find the correct xda forums to say "I not things good read," so obviously they can work the XDA forums, and I've never seen a Note 2 / international-1 ROM posted in these forums. So where are they failing at reading so miserably? I feel like XDA is set up to allow even an illiterate 4 year old not go wrong, so it must be randomly googling things, right?
Of course none of this applies to the OP. He's a great guy.
I made a mistake on flashing twrp for galaxy note 2 on my note 1...hahahaha that was so stupid of me...luckly this guy didnt hard brick his phone mine got hard bricked..cost me 40 but it was worth it rather then spending hundreds on a new one..READ CAREFULLY WHEN INSTALLING SOMETHING.. SPECIALLY A ZIP...read the zip aswell before installing...

Maybe new KK recovery soon?

So with the KK update LG changed the way the G2 is locked down. Been messing around with some stuff and just was able to get around the standard recovery and was able to boot into the more normal Android recovery. I think from here I can build a custom recovery that may work...
Who knows if it will work and not sure when I will be done with it so don't ask for ETA...
So, when will we have this? Jk...thank u for your hard work. Much appreciated.

I first noticed it when I was making flashable KK update zip when I screwed something up. Was surprised too see a recovery like that. This is my new recovery now and I am able to boot with it and bypass the regular LG recovery setup and can also boot into this recovery.

You have the G2 too? Do you remember me from the S4 Active days? Anyways what all can be done with this recovery? I would think they would have a lot of checks and stuff to reduce it.

So basically you do what every member on this forum only wishes they could do . G2 is SWEET though, I dont see myself getting another samsung for a while. I was hoping for the S5 but that let me down.
Anyways back to topic, I haven't made the jump to KK yet (mainly because I'm working 11 days in a row) but if they can work out a recovery for it I will be very happy
Stock recoveries will be allowed through the 4.4.2 bootloader check. Custom recoveries are not allowed because they pass through the aboot and if they are not 100% stock you are dropped into fastboot. Sorry man, this idea won't work.

He's already made a flashable KK with root access for D802 & D800.
I was also able to get into that recovery while messing with something. It was one time though. In read in Gibhub of Loki that LG has patched for Loki exploit but he used the previous aboot but that was just for an OTA. https://github.com/djrbliss/loki/issues/44
This a great News Im looking for your custom recavary

Well lot of us do
I am not an Android Dev but how much work would it be to just create a g2 framework package that would overlay on a source aosp rom? Lg ui isn't some mystical New rom is just an overlay. Very involved but I see other people exporting the Sony ui to other roms. It might be easier than trying to find an exploit that might not exist
