This phone continues to impress me each day - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I just came back from Warped Tour and I'm checking out the videos I recorded...these videos are actually legit. The quality looks damn good and the sound is ****in sick. I hate myself for the way I was holding my phone though because I can tell when I was cupping it wrong but other than that, it sounds damn good (and I'm super picky when it comes to audio).
On top of that...phone was unplugged since 8 AM...right now I'm at home with 8%...I'm shocked. Running all stock...no root. Good job HTC.

Another stock user.
This is finally a phone that I have no problem running stock. I have gotten used to the 3 dot menu bar, which will be fixed in an update soon anyway. Everything is just great. Using the OG Evo stock on Froyo was a terrible experience because the battery life was horrendous. The Evo 3D was laggy and also had poor battery life. But this phone... this phone is smooth and lasts long. Everything about it is just... good.
Until a JB ROM is available, I probably won't root.

Problems with stock:
* google wallet doesn't work
* tapping an address in a web page almost never brings up the maps app like it always does on og evo, instead it brings up the web google maps which is slow and battery killer
* phone numbers and addresses are generally less often automatically recognized than they were on the og evo. I often have to manually copy, home, open other app, paste
* the browser search/address bar doesn't clear itself when you want to enter something new. You have to backspace through a zillion character long url and query string, or long-press until the edit panel comes up, choose select-all, then choose cut, THEN you can finally type in you're web site or search term. Or you can set your home page to google and keep going menu->home. This was somehow never a problem on the og evo.
* multiple actions popup menu on a detected structure disabled thanks to Apple. If you tap on a phone number, you don't get a useful "dial, add to contacts, share, copy, etc" menu. Instead it just dials.
* menu button. Saying it will be fixed is meaningless. So many things were never fixed for the entire lives of so many phones and other devices. My $2000 Sony Vaio P still has no workable video driver, not even for windows let alone linux, and the thing is completely obsolete by now. Htc could fix the menu button ONLY by faking a hardware menu button which they may not even be able to do because Google probably has to vet the os and they won't ok that as it's opposite of ics policy. App developers are supposed to update their apps. Htc can't update everyone elses apps. So the menu button is here to stay.
* multitasking. Apps restart instead of resuming, web pages load and render from scratch just because you had to switch to some other app for a second. This _could_ be taken as a normal compromise for a tiny handheld computer, except we've all already owned phones, even old ones from years ago with much less ram and much less cpu that did a lot better. Even iphones are better. Og evo was better. Palm Pre was better. Palm Treo was better!
* you have a dual-core cpu, but you're only using one core. No performance or on-demand option, no option to use both cores when plugged in (better car/navigation, faster syncing or backups while docked, etc)
And of course there are the hardware / firmware problems that doesn't matter if you're stock or not:
* wifi hand-off bug
* cell radio low signal and inconsistent signal
* no extra capacity battery possible since no removable battery or replaceable battery cover. I have to carry around a mophie juice pack and a usb cable! Sooo elegant and portable!

This is one of those posts where I'm confused...I don't actually know what you're trying to gain from it...Do you want me to root? I'll root when I'm good and ready...right now I'm enjoying this phone and my stock experience. Just came back from an iPhone and I'm just happy to be back with Android. I have no desire to root because there's nothing wrong with stock. The problems you pointed out aren't even really problems...and if small things like the ones you mentioned are enough to tip you over...then idk how you'll ever be happy. Just enjoy the phone

About half of those issues are still there after you root ..but I still love her for some reason..Although I am starting to wanna use aosp more and more everyday.and I used to be a sense guy all the way..I just feel that stock has become more elegant than it used to be and sense is starting to remove essential functionality from android ie multitasking that should be no issue on a phone of this caliber..and I wish sense was as smooth as tw..but tw is an ugly stepsister to sense

nothing that wont be fixed with development.
My main reason for not enjoying this phone is that any time I play a game or watch you tube for a while Sense has to reload a lot when going back to the home screen.
Also after installing or updating apps the phone tends to get really bogged down for 15-20 seconds..Im just coming to the realization that Sense(although slimmed down) is still a fat ***** that causes more bad then good.

Bro- THANK YOU. I've been meaning to put something to that effect for two.weeks but hammered home(far more succinctly and lucid than I would) every issue I have . Of all of those I think the rerendering when you come off an app then return to it-however brief it just shouldn't happen at this point. Nice post, and , being a solutions oriented gentleman a la woody Paige, I just hope these issues get addressed promptly in our very productive community.

I'm not trying to gain anything, or rather, what were you trying to "gain" from your original post?
I don't care what you do or don't do.
You basically said "everything is fine" and pointed out a few reasons why you think so. And I said "no it's not" and pointed out a few reasons why I don't think so. It's called discussion.
I agree the phone is more or less functional and usable out of the box. So what? If that is good enough for you then I submit you have low standards and are possibly bad at math because you can get that for a lot cheaper than this phone with a much better actual phone since even the cheapest dumbphone has a pretty good working cell radio, you know, being it's primary reason for existing and all.
I have the capacity to be laid back and not sweat things I can't change just as you seem to. That's a great virtue to have. Congratulations. But I personally paid full out of pocket price for a lot more than the basics. Of course I know early adopters suffer the shakedown period. That in no way excuses HTC, because, this thing was not sold to us as a beta test unit. It was sold as a product. They are obligated to deliver that product.
Saying everything is great, when it's not, doesn't help anyone. It doesn't get problems fixed, it doesn't let HTC and Sprint know they are failing to deliver and pissing off customers.
As for being laid back, well hell why do you assume I'm not? This is just a web forum post man not some major part of my life. I'm on vacation in Key West if you must know, idly killing time playing with my phone because that's what Key West is about, just chilling and hanging out by the pool. or the beach. or Willie T's on Duval st. My girl is in the pool chatting with the other guests in the pool and none of us has a lick of clothes on. You see it's possible to recognize something needs a lot of improvement, and care about it, _even_ while at the same time recognizing it's place in the grand scheme.
Caring about things in general has an important, a very important place in the grand scheme. At the moment it's this phone. But it's not that this phone litterally itself is so important.
Enjoy your phone if you do.
But if you ask why everyone seems to have complaints, there are reasons. Beleive it or not, it's not just because everyone is just that ridiculously anal.

I just got back from Key West! What in the world hotel are you at though? Didn't see any clothing optional ones, haha. Only saw the clothing optional bar (Garden of Eden) over on Duval. Nice relaxing place, Key West is. Spent 5 days there. We stayed at The Inn at Key West, which has the largest pool on the island. It was pretty awesome.

[q] is htchd2 really worth it?

ok so we all know that the htc leo has alot of cool features you can use on it and alot of its qaulity is unique. but unfortunatly it has lots of problems too. i so far has gotten 4 brand new htc hd2's and they all have bugs and problems within them like restarting by itself many times and freezes. tell me what u think?
I love the phone. But I also have very few freezes and have never had the phone reset itself.
I've never had a defective phone. I think a lot of it is things we do to them.

Same here. The only time I get lockups or slow-downs are after I install certain apps.
Same here..............
Had mine since November and the only problems have been ones that Ive caused through too much tweaking.....
And a problem with T Mobiles original stock rom but that was T Mobiles fault not the HD2.......

The HD2 is a wonderful machine that gives you best performance and wonderful features.
Especially when u compares it to competitive products or the price paid.
I have HD2 , T-8585, since January and never had any freeze or self restart.
All problems I had never cased from the HD2 itself. They cased from installing soft wares which sometimes do not work properly with other soft wares. That was easily recovered with the assistance of nice guys here.
Some problems occurred from defective accessories such as croppy cheap usb-micro cable.
The HD2 is wonderful machine that can be easily converted and modified according to your needs and imagination.
Thanks for the great answers ! I think its just the T-Mobile Rom thats a complete piece of crap. Because I didnt even add anything or tweaked the first 2 phones i got and they still caused many problems within the first day no B/S. Another quick question dough, how much would it cost to buy and repair an htc hd2 LCD screen, because one of my phones screen cracked. Its not the glass outer part that broke but the inner screen.
I am agree with you all, it's a great phone fast-big screen-cool design, but....
It's worth to pay 450 euro for this phone now (AUG)?? I mean I can wait for the next generation (mabe hd3/NOV or DECEMBER) thaat will have more features like an S-AMOLED and mabe a hdmi cable, and all of that with +50 euro.
Do you know anything about new HTC phones that will be released and when, and it is worth to wait more??? Thank you!
I believe the hd2 is one of the best devices on the market. It's fast, it has wonderful features, and now it is capable of running more then one os. Even the stock winmo isn't bad if yu change the rom and don't care about downloading apps. I believe for tmo usa, the hd2 is hands down the best phone they have, other then the n1. And yes better then the samsung vibrant, which is supposed to b upgrade but doesn't even have a camera flash.my experience with samsung phones has been horrible. I don't even think froyo has been released for it. Even tho it's ported, I've been running froyo on my hd2 since late july. As for up coming phones, google htc vision aka g1 blaze. 1GHz processor, medium sized screen, slide out keyboard and android. Basically the first legit replacement for the original g1. Much better then that mediocre mytouch slide 3g. The choice is yours.personally I love my hd2, but yu might just want to wait alittle while longer.

Btw the htc vision should b coming out before the years end. Also there is a rumored hd3 coming soon that is supposed to run wimo7. Decision, decisions lol best thing about the hd2, runs winmo 6.xx, runs linux, runs android, and most likely will run winmo7(I'm sure someone will figure out how to port it) what other phone can do that! Lol decisions decisions

i think its a Great phone, i love everything about it slim design customisation element big screen but unfortunately it does have its flaws eg battery life occasional freezing to name a few plus no further windows upgrade officially it looks like a dying breed imo but without the chefs on here this handset will be resurrected with android port coming through and presumably windows 7 the futures look good
I do love the phone alot and i do think its the best phone on the market but im just highly upset with its problems. My bad luck i guess hehe . I have another question dough.
What does the red or yellow dots on the back of the phone next to the battery on the lower left mean? I got a 3 phones with red dots but 1 with a yellos dot.

all that is a reset button. First it was red, then on the newer batch, it was changed to yellow.
For me, its the best windows phone I have ever used. Although if I was thinking of buying a new phone at this stage of the year, I think I would wait till around Oct-Nov or at least i'll wai for the first release of W7 and see if it is worth the wait. But the HD2's built I think is almost perfect(virtual keys at the bottom would have made it perfect for me).
Well dasz really true ! Thanksz for all da help guysz .. Ima jusz try to find the best rom out there . I wuld like sum help on dat too if u dont mind hehe This site is very supportive and useful !! Big thumbs up
Coming from a google phone for the past 2 years and then going back to Windows I was amazed how easy it was to deal with the phone.
The issues are the same as the others freezing, lag, etc. I think its the stock ROM itself, but I wonder? Sometimes it acts like my old dash and when you have to close the tasks and use a program to clear up ram space, it annoys me.
I don't like the windows market place, in google certain programs are free, but in windows you have to pay to use features? F-that.
I awating till they perfect a andriod rom to be put in the HD2 with no issues.
The good points of the phone is that it syncs to my outlook with ease..

I don't like the windows market place, in google certain programs are free, but in windows you have to pay to use features? F-that.
I awating till they perfect a andriod rom to be put in the HD2 with no issues.
The good points of the phone is that it syncs to my outlook with ease..

So does this mean that no matter what rom i put into the phone, it will always be lagging and freezing as it normally would?

I wouldnt say that since most of the roms here seem to make it run better, but Windows mobile is crap compared to Linux.
The HD2 has the same features as my Andriod phone Google maps, You Tube, Google Browser, yet run like crap on the windows mobile phone. GPS take forever to lock on and the maps just has a differnet feel to it..Youtube runs differnet and the browser is crap
Does this phone really have a 1 ghz processor? It feels like my a phone is on 450ghz at times, again maybe window mobile requires too much?
I'm going to flash a rom on the phone since I am tired of the battery drain which is annoying
I have a Nexus One that I am in the process of selling since I like the Hd2 alot more.
The Hd2 does everything I could ever ask of a smartphone and more:
- Free turn by turn GPS directions
- Emulator gaming
- Word/Excel documents
- Bluetooth keyboard support (Android cant do this at all)
- Voice recorder
- Gorgeous 4.3' monster screen
- Tethering
I haven't had any problems with my Hd2 whatsoever. If anything Android gave me more problems than Windows Mobile. The only reason you hear about Android more is it's newer and the media want's to push it as hard as they do with Apple stuff for ratings...
I'm bored with my HD2. Because its working perfectly. I guess I need a new phone with lots of problems
I love the phone. It's design is great, the screen is amazing and the hardware is beefy. What really makes the phone though is the community and chefs here at XDA. I lose count of the amount of times I have reflashed my phone. With different ROMS, experimenting and messing around. It's a great device if you like doing that. It makes you pity the iSheep followers, really..
However, my main 2 drawbacks are this: 1) The battery life is poor.. although that is understandable with the screen and hardware it's got to supply. 2) the fact that HTC have confirmed that they will not be supporting/supplying WinMo 7 for the device. However, I hold out hope that will not be a problem for the clever guys here at XDA .

lag and instability, or poor user understanding of android

I get lag and unresponsive touch controls after a few hours heavy use. It is resolved with a reboot. Not many 3 party apps installed. Is there a particular way to exit apps in android, I notice not every app has a exit option in it's menu.
Most annoying is when browsing the web and the screen can't determine if it should zoom or scroll.
I'm coming from WM6.5 so if there are some basics that apply to Android and are not phone specific, please point me to the right guide.

there's a task manager in the app list. should be able to close out whatever you want there. good luck
+1 to what he said. You must have every bloat app opened or something too because I have yet to have an issue.

Likely the issue. It will probably get better over time too, but the task manager is a good thing to use. Task KILLERS are bad though.
+1 again! lol I stopped using ATK after my X1.
My friend bought a droid and the person in the store installed it for him. That disappointed me.
I've noticed it too, mostly with ADW EX. This is my third Android phone so I'm not a noob. I'm about to return it and get nexus.

its funny that a phone that isnt out yet is the king of all phones with 0 issues. All hail the nexus, the most perfect phone to ever come out
oh whats that you say, its not out yet....
I am cant wait till the nexus comes out actaully and you start seing the exact same threads "CAN WE DISABLE THE SOFTKEYS SO WE CAN GET MORE SCREEN REALESTATE!!!!" OMG IM RETURNING THIS FOR THE REZOUND!!1!one!!!!"
You must have seen my thread! lol
Chill out guys, the phone gets better with more development, complaining about issues that can pretty easily be resolved with some Dev effort isn't going to get us the Dev effort we want. There is an issue thread, lets keep everything confined to that thread unless it is a question that hasn't been asked. That way, they can see what the issues are, and take action as they can.
like i post everywhere, especially on youtube (because youtube=full of haters)
Nexus fanboys have become as bad as Apple fanboys. period. they're JUST as bad now, and they're annoying as ****. whatever, let him return it and get a phone that's got no definitive release date. he can have fun with his boring, ugly stock android while we love our looks of sense.
I can say that I've had 0 issues with this phone whatsoever. Which is very surprising to me being that every phone that I've ever had always had something about it that I didn't like. I can't find anything with the rezound that I don't like. No lags, battery life is good, zippy, and the screen is amazing. I haven't used the task killer as of yet and I don't think I'm gonna have to. Not trying to sound like a fanboy but it is what it is.

I think I figured it out, in the afternoon I plug the phone in to charge so it will be fully charged by the time I get off work. At that time is when I was experiencing instability. What I found the cause to be is a cheapo usb cable. Anytime I try to use the phone with that cable plugged in it would exhibit instability and a jumpy screen. It would stop immediately after I unplug the usb cable. Never had this type of problem with a cable before, I've had phones not charge because of loose fitting cables but never had a cable screw the phone up like that.

if you are plugged in, check your usb power adapter
I usually change batteries often enough on my tbolt that it isn't a problem, but I like system panel app's widget to kill all. If my phone starts to bog down, just hit it on the home screen and everything gets cleared. You can set a list of apps for it to ignore as well.
As far as nexus fanboys, yeah they are getting bad and tech bloggers are the worst. Reviews of the nexus have actually been pretty middle of the road. Engadget said that it is not as smooth as GB (ICS) and the camera was disappointing. You also can't mount your storage to usb to transfer files and the screen has some amoled issues, esp. with brightness turned down.
I'm definitely favoring the rezound, but will wait till I can score one on Craigslist for about 300.

Multitouch borked? (And potentially shady VZW customer service)

So I got my DNA on Sunday. So far, I'm pretty happy with it except for one issue. My multitouch seems messed up. If I'm trying to play a game that requires both thumbs, basically the two of them tapping the screen interfere with one another. For example, if I'm playing something like shadowgun, or GTA III, or max payne, or even the preinstalled diablo clone, if I'm moving a character and try to press an attack button at the same time(or in the case of GTA trying to actually steer while driving) the character movement "stick" resets to neutral. and sometimes the reverse will happen. Trying to move will cause the attack button to stop registering. The issue has been "confirmed" by me with multitouch visible test found in the play store. In the test, moving my thumbs around and making them cross axis screws up the touch registering. could anyone confirm or deny that this is happening on their device? Games are basically unplayable. I went into a VZW store today(the only one in my are with the phone in stock) and tried their demo unit and it exhibited the same problem. I was then promptly told by the sales rep that the one device they had was being held for a paid order. Nevermind the fact that I was told over the phone minutes before that the one phone was available and that they DO NOT hold devices for customers. A call to corporate may be in order... Anyway, any thoughts on the multitouch "issue" would be greatly appreciated.
Have you tried turning off HTC gestures in Settings -> Display & Gestures? I think the 3 finger swipe for HTC Media Link messes with multi touch
Generally speaking any issues with multitouch are software related. The sensors should be fine its a matter of callibration based on the software. Like the previous poster said it may be due to sense's gesture features. New kernels when they are released will likely fix this but I have never experiencedit. Gonna have to try and reproduce this today.
I've also noticed plenty of issues with multi touch. I've noticed while browsing, if I'm holding the phone with two hands and any portion of my one hand is touching the screen and I'm trying to scroll it won't respond till I remove that skin that is making contact.

I'm pretty sure every phone is like that.
I believe it is the game/app software related. I don't think a lot of them are set up to recognize the larger 5.0"+ screens running resolutions over 720p. We are kinda treading new territory here. I have heard of a few games that don't display correctly on our phones so I don't doubt controls/multi-touch could need some tweaking as well.
I may be wrong but that is my opinion.

Are you becoming part of the "Now" generation that I saw you complain about in another thread?
Games will begin working once app developers start updating for 1080p screens.

No, LOL.
But I have seen these things before, where developers catch up 6 months later. A lot of the games I want to play are Gameloft or EA, and they both are terrible at updating. Horn hasn't been updated since September.
In that case, I can come back in 6 months with a newer device and will be content.
I am definitely patient, and can live with the Gnex a bit longer if I decide to go that route.
Thanks for the replies. I did try turning off HTC gestures last night with no success. I'll have to figure out a way to post a video of it. Basically, in the multitouch test app, If i hold the phone in landscape, as if I'm playing a game, then place both thumbs in the lower corners, it registers fine. However, if I slowly move my left thumb up and down then repeatedly tap the right corner(an action commonly performed in 3D action games) it trips it up and starts reversing the thumb inputs and occasionally introducing a third input even though I only have two fingers on screen. I can't believe that it's just an issue with software, or I'd assume reviews would have pointed to it. It makes games basically unplayable. And I've seen video online of people playing those types of games on the phone without the issue. A video would help. I'll try to figure something out.
Its been like that for some time the phones capability is more than the multi tasking allows I got 7 apps at once any load after that it won't show in recent. Though its slightly better with the app refresh upon switch its much better than my previous HTC the EVO LTE . Still when we got aosp based roms it was much better but with no limit or more on that device it slowed a lot but two gigs in this is great.

So I've "solved" the issue. I actually swapped it out for another phone and then it worked fine and I was happy. Then I re installed holo locker from the play store and started having the same issue. So holo locker WILL break the multi touch capabilities of the DNA. I just e-mailed the dev and hopefully get a response. So again, for anyone using the phone, DO NOT INSTALL HOLO LOCKER. At least not until it's updated.

Nokia Lumia 920 - review and why I returned it.

I bought the 920 on weds..just returned today. The first one the shop had was DoA but the guy gave me another meant for another customer. The phone is top notch quality albeit on the heavier side. Camera placement in the center is not ideal and the phone could slip out of your hands..but its built like a tank. Screen is excellent and call quality is clear . Despite the weight it feels really good...better than the iphone 5 which i also have and night and day against any samsung phone (i had note 2 as well). Now the bad news.
Windows 8 mobile sucks!!! It took me an hour to setup my windows live or is it hotmail account. When I first setup it thought I was a child and gave me the round around telling me to check with family controls etc. Also I needed to put my credit card details etc just to access the app store. This process was also confusing since it redirected to the awful internet explorer mobile on the phone where the fonts were so small I couldnt see damn thing. Resizing the web page was cumbersome at best. I tried a few times...and i was so frustrated i felt like throwing the phone against the wall. In the end I did a hard reset and after more mucking around and searching on forums I got it working. But it was like pulling teeth.
Once I got my account setup..you cant change it unless you do a hard reset. So you are basically locked to that account. So if you have one older MS live account and a newer one , you wont be able to switch. This is the most retarded thing out. On android and iOs you can have many accounts as you want. I have a US, UK account which I like to use.
Anyway the first thing I did was go to the app store to download essentials such as Whatsapp , skype etc since nowadays we dont really talk anymore on the phone but message.Skype was ok and it has a special interface coz MS owns it. Whatsapp was a disaster, First time it took forever to load my contacts then say i had no contacts. 2nd time i got it to work but no video uploads. the interface is not as easy as on ios or droid. This is by no means MS fault but they should have checked to see if it works on newer phones. But I guess theres the rub. MS win 8 mobile has such a low user base, developers treat updates with the lowest priority. The app store has hotch potch skeleton app selection. You wont find spotify there but Nokia Music fills the gap albeit a poor substitute. I use my phone as music player first and foremost so music lovers will be disappointed. The MS sync tool with itunes is very bad. Playlists and songs werent copied and album art missing.
The microsoft email client is not as good as ios . You can change fonts and html messaged dont look as clean. I dont take many pics so didnt really try out the camera. But even when i turned flash off the flash was still on for some reason. The lens placement in the center of the phone meant that you would take shots of your fingers instead. Since the phone is heavy it was hard to just hold the bottom half to take pics. They should put the lens on the top left/right.
Surfing was an ok experience..windows wouldnt auto resize so most of the time you would get really small fonts.
Movies were good as display is excellent.. For some reason it also just shutdown completely last night (with 70% battery) and it took a soft reset to get it going again. The live tiles system is different and people who are tired of ios or droid may find this unique but the novelty factor wears off since not all tiles are live. The UI is smooth and there was no lag. Also little things like no batt percentage and some youtube videos wouldnt play (vevo) as it recognized win8 as mobile device. This works on ios and droid.
Bottom line...it wasnt a keeper since there are so many bugs to iron out.
Pros
beautiful high quality constructed phone. better than iphone5, htc/samsung note2 s3 etc
good yellow color
good UI..smooth
Cons
Win 8 mobile- THE BIGGEST reason why i returned it.
Camera placement
Apps (im not a heavy app user but the basic ones dont even work properly)
Slightly heavy to hold
It may be good for ppl who take a lot of photos since the camera is supposed to be the best on any phone..apart from that..would advise you to stay away until the win8 bugs are sorted.
PS i think Nokia/MS is desperate so they restricted supply to make it look as if the phone is hot and to get the buzz going. I really wanted to like it but couldnt get past the crap win 8 mobile. If the phone had droid or ios then it would be.. Also I think MS is padding the user reviews to make people buy it...
I set up my mail and main account in less than 5 minutes on my 920. It synced perfectly and pulled down all my contacts, calendar, and photo.
Music syncing wasn't quite as smooth, but I got it working. I do agree about having only one main account and not being able to change it seems stupid.
As for apps, they are coming, but I have noticed some developers putting out subpar WP8 apps while their iOS and Android are fine. I blame the developers for that crap. It's inexcusable.

Hmm that's funny...
I have an adriod tablet... gmail account and credit card needed for the marketplace... hmm Sounds like an iPhone where an Apple id is required to use the iCrap. Same issue there. Now, I do have one customer that has a Blackberr..... uh nope just switched to a 920. Just saying, your first point has me wondering where else it is any different. The comparison to iOS, eh... one thing I don't have an issue wit on the phone is text size and reading all that, but you do realize you can change that in the settings!!!! This was a change over WP7. Yes there are some subpar apps, but that's what sets WP apart so much of the phone will do what you need 10 apps to do on iOS and Andriod. I can do most of what you do faster on any other platform. However, this is all a preference argument and I personally don't have an app hard on. I had to help a customer settle in coming from her iPhone, but we set up her outlook to use her Micosoft accout for her contacts and calander. She is all setup like if she had excange server at home without changing her other email address. There is a learning curve with any switch... you made one when you bought your first iPhone. You are not buying a new iPhone, it is a new platform.

I'm sorry you had such a hard time setting an account. In my case, it look me less than 2 mins. It would have been much easier for you to create an account on your computer and then just sign-in with your phone. Wish WP8 provided a "hint" like this to those who are completely new to this ecosystem.

Completely agree.. iCrap forces you to do it that way... the device does not even power on without initially hooking it up and setting it up with iTunes on a computer. I think Micrsoft could recomend it on that first setup screen. If you already have an MS account you don't need to go to the computer at all.... so at least with WP8 you can skip that step and have everything setup before you get home. Just when you thought that would be a feature!
OP, I feel your pain. I like my Nokia 920, but am starting to get cold feet because of the apps. One example, I drive a Toyota it uses ENTUNE, there is no app and possibly will never be fully compatible. ALso things like HBO GO and such. I dont use them much on a phone anyway, but I still miss it. And as my cable company adds Video Apps, they take forever to get to Android, how long until they even acknowledge WP8?? My Son is a college athlete, whats the odds his schools app will have a WP8 version? Again, I do like the phone, if I didnt also use a 7" Galaxy Tab, I probably would have returned it. However, the new Galaxy Note 2 is tempting me to switch phones again...
While the setup on mine was easy, I'll be returning it today for one big reason...the camera. Granted, I knew going in that they camera has problems in daylight shots, but I figured I'd give it a try in the real world and see how my results turned out. Honestly, even worse than I expected. I also have the SIII and this thing can't hold a candle to it's camera. Maybe Nokia fixes it with a software update, but what if they don't? I'd rather return it and wait and see rather than keep it, go beyond my return window, and be stuck with such a crappy camera that never gets fixed.
He's a comparison shot I did this morning. The 920 picture looks like it's been run through some sort of cartoon editing software. Look at the tree on the right with the dead leaves still on it compared to the shot from the SIII. Insanity.

Yeah, I have seen a couple of those shots show up, but the majority of shots put the SIII to shame. Go indors and take some shots without the flash (turn it off) And yes the Lumia 900 had some simular issues and yep that got an update right away. The cam went from lackluster to pretty damn good. The pictures consistantly came out better than my transforer prime tablet which had a decent camera.

Hmm, I set mine up in the store while waiting for the receipt to be printed. But I did already have a .live account. I didn't have to input a credit card because if I buy anything I just add it to my ATT bill. Very unlike my iPad where Apple insists I have a CC on file.
As for locking you into one specific account, well, that's no different from Apple. I can't change my Apple ID either.
And apps? Well, I find that the OS does just about anything I need without specific apps. Whereas I find IOS not much more than a glorified 'app launcher'.
Don't get me wrong. I love my iPad. But I expect something more and different from my phone. I expect my phone to simplify my life and frankly I find this OS does that. I was a 'flashacholic' when I had previous windows phones so I really considered a new Android phone. But frankly WP8 is a dream to use.
OP, sorry you had such a hard time. I had the same hard time the first times tried to set up my first iPad. This comes from being familiar with an OS. Other OSs feel 'wrong'. The 920 isn't for everyone, nor is WinPhone 8, nor is IOS or even Android.
Ain't choice great!

Agreed, and far, FAR beyond iPhone, which I ran with for over 2 years.
As for setting up the Microsoft account, I don't see how anyone could have a problem with it. More importantly, if you know you have to set one up...do it on your PC, not your phone. That's just common sense, or so I'd guess.
Windows Phone 8 is, hands down, the best mobile OS I've ever used, and I've used them all.

If that is the case, the Lumia has the most potential. The limitations are on the way the phone is processing the pictures (software) not a limitation on hardware. Hardware you can't change, software you can. Every phone today gets tweeked with after it's initial release. The 920 will be no different. The stabilization works, the low light performance works... Give them a chance to update and if it still doesn't perform... something better will be out there or coming out.

I absolutely agree the Lumia has tons of potential. And I'm sure they'll put out an update to the software to fix the camera. That's why I returned mine to wait until they do. I can promise you, once they fix it and the reviews start pouring in that the camera is good to go, I'll be picking another one up. Other than the camera software, this phone is amazing.
But even when i turned flash off the flash was still on for some reason. The lens placement in the center of the phone meant that you would take shots of your fingers instead. Youre dont mean the focus-assist lighting? You know, the light that makes your camera able to focus on things it might normally be too dark for it to focus on? Cause thats not flash.
I never take a picture of my fingers. Also, pressing on the screen to take a photo could help you out if you feel its too heavy to hold while using the manual button.
Personally the WP8 experience is on par with the experience I had on my SGS3 with android 4.1.
I like the homescreen far more than on Android, and the way social and email is integrated with the native apps like messaging, contacts, etcetera.
I dont like IE10 as much as Chrome, but thats MOSTLY because of how IE10 handles doubletap to zoom and textwrapping plus certain messageboards. Why no mobile browser besides the microB-browser has had swirlzooming is beyond me.
All in all, the 920 is better for me than the SGS3, and Id choose it over SGS3 any day of the week.

Got a Lumia 920 yesterday for my wife (not a technically savvy person at all!) Once she had her bearings (about 5 minutes navigating around) it took her less than 5 minutes to set up all her e-mails. There was no need to give any credit card information, and the camera is really good in low lights... compared it to my S2. Daylight shots are a little washed out, but READ! a camera firmware patch is coming soon. Tech specs on the camera are really good, and so is the screen... these two and the solid constructions are the reason i opted for this phone. Pretty sure others would agree.
And in conclusion, if it took you over an hour to set up email, it's a good thing you returned this phone. I would highly recommend staying miles away from Android or Windows devices; a Leap-frog or an Apple product would work best for you.

I read a post about how amazing Night mode was. So I played around with the scenes Close Ups, Cloudy, and Night Mode. So often, that stuff is just a gimmick, not on this phone!
I returned my Lumia 900 cause it was hard for me to transition from Android and it was lacking. I gave the 920 and WP8 another chance and never looked backed. It's restricted compared to how you have so much customization you can do on Android, but the 920 is far from being some kind of wash out. The stabilization of the camera is one of the best I've seen. I've take shots compared to my HTC One X and the stability feature is awesome.
Personally I love a heavy set phone. Gives me the feel of sturdiness. I've always liked heavier phone.
The screen in day light is simply the best thing I have ever seen. The way the color tones adjust to bright light is incredible. Even with the top down on my car I can see the screen crystal clear.
The speaker on this thing is SUPER loud. Louder than my Nexus 7. The EQ on this thing absolutely smashes anything my One X Beats Audio could dish out. It's even better than any EQ feature on Android 3rd party apps like Power Amp. When I adjust the EQ it adjust.
It took me minutes to set up my Live, Google, LinkedIn, Yahoo, NetZero, and Hotmail Account. The integration is very nice in how it works together.
I have my quarrels with WP8, but it's super stable and nicely integrated with apps optimized for it's ecosystem.
IMHO WP8 is at the point of what Froyo was for Android. One of those landmark version that will get this OS out in the wild.
Sorry to hear you not like it, I can understand as I been there with the 900, but I can't justify it with the 920. The apps will come, the stability will come, the updates to software will come.
I've actually had the worse upgrade of JB on my Nexus 7 when they fixed the bugs of forgetting to December in the calendar. And to be quite frank my 920 process faster than my One X with the same processor and my Nexus 7. I'll never stop using Android, but I'll never say WP8 sucks. There's no way.
I agree with OP regarding the email client; 1 account is not enought. For the rest i can only say that i setup my phone in 5 minutes with no problems at all. Using my 920 since 2 weeks, coming from an iphone4 and no regrets at all.

[Q] Please help, I am having multiple issues and can find no information on them

Look I'm sorry if I broke one of the 500 rules here, I am just desperately in search of help.
I have been a smart phone owner since 2009. I bought an iphone 3. I upgraded to a 3gs eventually, then last summer got my first note.
I went through five iphones because I kept sending them back due to various issues. I thought Android would be great and fix all my issues, but honestly I hate my phone and I just want a smartphone that works. Like I said I bought my first one in 2009 and I have just been trying to have a fully functional smartphone ever since and it is something I have never gotten to experience. Four years! Jesus, I just want one that works and doesn't give me random issues everytime I try to use it.
So my note is running android 4.0.4 I am going to list various issues I am having with it in the next post. I would do it in this post but I had it all typed up then this page just turned blank and I lost what I typed. I have no idea why.
Please keep in mind I have owned five Notes. I have sent them back for various issues, but these problems have persisted across all of them.
1. If I am using a web browser in landscape mode and go about ten seconds without touching the screen or buttons, the right side of the screen flashes black repeatedly.
2. When I use the default audio player the last song I picked automatically starts playing. It used to not autostart the music. How can I disable this?
3. When I am in an app and press home, sometimes after the app minimizes it comes right back up instead of going to the home screen. Why?
4. How come sometimes when I go to unlock my phone, the clock is in the middle instead of the top, which is what I have it set to?
5. When I attempt to download an image off the internet through any of the five browsers I have installed about 50% of the time the download fails regardless of 4G or wifi connection strength. How can I fix this?
6. Sometimes when I click a link on a webpage, the page jumps to another part of the webpage and activates a random link from that area. Wtf?
7. If I close every running app, disable every unrequired service and turn my screen brightness down all the way, I cannot use my browser and charge my phone at the same time without the battery draining quicker than it charges. How can I browse the web and charge my battery at the same time?
8. If I click up by issue #5 or #6 to edit something, this website scrolls the edit box all the way up to the top. The only way I can get back down to where I am typing this is to drag the text selection tool. Kind of annoying.
9. My lock screen setting is set to auto lock after ten minutes because I prefer to manually lock my phone when I'm done using it, not use auto lock. When I get a phone call this setting is overidden and the screen locks after ten seconds of inactivity following a phone call. How can I get my phone to always respect the value I selected for that setting rather than some of the time?
10. the default camera app has an option to set custom shortcuts. This is a useful feature. However every time I exit the application the shortcuts are reset to default, making that feature worthless. How can I set custom shortcuts permanently?
What's the common denominator among all these devices(ip*/sammy)?

Ok I hate to be the one to say this but you will never find anything that will not have random issues. This is the way of smartphones. While One device may run perfectly the same device and the same OS version will have random issues.
Also might want to look into something called a logcat. It will help you find the issues you see

They all feel like a waste of money?
let me see if I can either answer or help you clarify what's needed to solve these issues.
First are you stock unrooted? running a custom rom? Rooted?
(each of the following number correlate with the issues you listed):
1) Stock web browser or all of the one's you've tried? By flashes black, does half the screen start flashing black then back to what's being displayed quickly?
2) the playing the last song if I recall is a restart "function" that the player does, check in the settings for that. Maybe someone else can answer this as I don't use my phone as an MP3 player, just pandora.
3) I've had this happen from time to time with my phone as well. I've noticed that it happens with memory intensive programs. I just hit the home button again. Don't know what to tell you there
4) Are you referring to the clock on your lock screen or status bar?
5) Is this issue one specific image? is it from one given website? have you tried dolphin browser? I can tell you that it does work on my phone from google front page.
6) This happens to me as well, it's annoying and I feel your pain. It happens to me when I go to click a link when I have my keyboard open which resizes and moves the webpage and then activates the click in the new location. Is this similar to your issue?
7) Are you using the charger that came with the phone or a charger that pipes 1A to the device for charging? a lot of chargers our there will only do 500mA and a lot of cables will limit the charging to speed to 500mA because they aren't shorted for full power charging. Though someone should correct me if I'm wrong here.
8) Editing likes to jump around, mainly due to what I mentioned in response to 6 because it closes and reopens the keyboard. Again that's from my experience. this has been limited when I moved to swiftkey and a JB rom.
9) I have no clue about this one. and have no idea what to tell you. I'd say play in the settings for this one.

You kindly asked for help, so I’ll kindly try my best.
1. I have NEVER heard of anything like this. So you say this happened on different Notes? That is akward. I wonder if a different dpi setting will cure this for ya. If your rooted you can install xposed and change individual app dpi’s This will also aid in resolving your #8 issue.
2. This is a normal setting in default audio players. I suggest GoneMad audio player. It has TONS of features and device controls to solve this for ya.
3. I noticed this problem once before. I believe it’s an animation lag. I never seen it happen if I turn off transition animations. Try that and repost back.
4. This sounds like a governor issue. The cpu frequency drops when phone is locked. When it wakes up it lags and the clock doesn’t pop back to where it’s suppose to be. I notice this a LOT when I rotate from portrait to landscape while lockscreen is up.
5. When your image downloads fail, what’s going on with the phone? Same with when they do download. Is anything else running? Is screen locked at all during the download?
6. I notice this happening with different individual webpages. Sometimes a webpage will have an advertisement that slowly loads at the top or side. When it does eventually load the screen elongates which moves the spot we were on. But of course this always happens right when we’re clicking a link! Could this possibly be what’s happening to you?
7. Are you using the stock supplied usb cable and charger plug? Aftermarket chargers have different output voltages. If your using a cheapO it will only charge when not doing anything. And even then it’s still slow to charge!
8. Our phones aren’t the greatest for typing LONG paragraphs or replies. I changed my keyboard dpi so it’s a lil smaller. It gave me more room in landscape mode to see what’s above and I can scroll thru what I wrote easier. That’s not a perfect solution but it helps!
9. I believe this problem is a default security issue. I remember reading somewhere that a phone is set to lock after a phone call because our face could be touching it and press something it shouldn’t. Also that if you were to give your phone to someone to make a phone call having the phone unlocked could be a security breach to you. When you think about it for a second it’s not a bad feature afterall! I’ve given my phone to a coworker during a call and I wouldn’t want him playing with my phone for a second! But when the boss is on the phone with me and wants to talk to whom I’m standing beside I let him! Your problem could be solved with a newer release of JellyBean. I notice a setting in my phone that says "Exit to last activity on end call" which will allow phone to exit to the previous activity screen on end call rather than going to call log and locking.
10. This problem makes me think that you might of tweeked something you shouldn’t of. Why else would an app not remember it’s settings you stored? If it’s not a tweek issue, you can try installing a different camera app. There’s literally 100’s!
Sorry if those responses are of no help. I’m no expert they are just my thoughts on your issues. Good luck!

no worries I completely understand the pain of having an issue and feeling like I'm the only one EVER to deal with it.
SO don't hate me for these next set of recommendations, it's just all part of the troubleshooting process. What I would do is a full factory reset. I mean wipe everything, and I do mean everything because I'm almost suspecting it could be a rogue app causing at least some of your issues. I believe you can revert all the way back to GB (someone will correct me if I'm wrong, it is the internet after all). then without installing anything at all try the stock web browser see if it still flashes and jumps around. If it does well it's what some Microsoft programs like to call a "feature". as for your power consumption issue. try installing this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.manor.currentwidget&hl=en . it isn't perfectly accurate, but it should tell you close to what your amperage that's going into your phone, which should be around 1000ma (or 1A). I know the issue you're referring to and it happens to me when I use the GPS on my truck using my truck adapter which is only 500mA. battery just drops and drops and drops.
After you've done all that and still don't have the desired results, flash ICS and try again.
Lastly I hate the browsing system on these phones as well. you can clearly tell it's a simulated multitasking system and it won't even load multiple pages at the same time and if you switch between the tabs it'll refresh the page and redownload it. Annoying as crap especially when you're trying to watch some pr0n. But it is much better than on my ipod touch so I deal with it. Where I guess I differ from a lot of people who buys this phone is I think of it as a place to get my emails, phone calls and look something up to prove something wrong. I don't feel a smartphone has really become a laptop or netbook replacement yet.
I hope these steps help. If all else fails and you're still having issues, maybe this phone just won't do what you want it to do. I know, I know that a phone should do what it advertises but when it doesn't live up to it, it's time to step to a different device. The S4 was just released and the HTC One is supposed to be a smokin phone too. And with the documented cases of issues you've been having I bet they'd be more than happy to get you to a different device without having to pay full price.
Again I hope these help.

Well explain how this happens:
- Three iphones in a row had an issue with getting dust under the screen. At the time I had an office job, so the phone saw clean slacks pockets and my desk at home, nothing else. The first time it happened they did a screen replacement first and the problem persisted. I never exposed them to extreme environments, never dropped them, nothing.
-I have had the audio port on my Note fail on three different Notes. I use headphones maybe once or twice a week, and when I drive I sometimes plug it up to my tape adapter. They are never subjected to unreasonable force, I never jam the plug in there or anything etc.
-I have had iphones and Notes run at about 30-50% overall speed as the others I have tried, when they are 100% fresh straight from the factory and have not had a single 3rd party app installed or anything.
-I have PC components from the 80's, a circa 2000 HDD based MP3 player from iriver I even used while skateboarding, an original NES and gameboy, the original Razor and countless other electronic devices that have performed flawlessly in the time that I have owned them.
Seriously, explain to me how it is my fault that all five galaxy notes I have tried fail to download a simple image file no matter how good my connection is.
Explain to me why every email application I have used on any smartphone, ios or droid, is so ****ing slow that after hitting refresh inbox I can switch to my browser, open my email providers page, type in my login infox and open my mailbox quicker than the app. Explain why its my fault I can refresh my inbox when I expect mail, see nothing, refresh it again immediately, then have it download five emails from an hour ago. What did I do wrong?
Explain to me why a week ago my phone decided I can't upload images due to "insufficient memory" despite having changed no settings, added no new apps etc. Explain to me what else I can do after resetting the phone, deleting chromes cache, manually stopping and disabling every non essential app that was running, clearing all running processes, clearing ram and resizing the photo. Explain to me why after all that I still cannot upload that photo with Chrome or any other browser, but I can intentionally run as many apps as I can at once, then upload the full size, unedited photo with an imgur app and it goes through no problem. How is that my fault?
How is it my fault that my battery dropped 5% in the time it took me to type this with screen brightness cranked to a minimum, no other apps running, wifi bluetooth and gps disabled and my phone plugged in to a known good outlet with factory wdapters? How is this my fault that I cannot use my phone and charge it at the same time?
How is it my fault that the camera app will not keep my shortcuts?
How is it my fault that a week ago, my music playing application decided to do the following: I pick x song off y album and let it play through a few songs. Q song, the fifth one in the album, is currently playing. I decide I want to listen to another artist. I unlock my phone and go back to the app while the song is still playing. As soon as I open the app it stops the current song and restarts the last song I opened, closing out song Q for song X. It never did that before. I changed no settings. What did I do wrong?
I have a total of maybe five apps I've even downloaded since getting this phone. A 1mb< notepad app, chrome, a sketchbook program and pdanet. All except the last were straight from googles store.
I just dont know. I feel like I paid 500$ for pure, condensed frustration that fits conveniently into my pocket. Every other electronic device I own does what it is supposed to. My PS3 doesnt decide to just stop working. My Wii is a tank. My car is a champ. My digital cameras are workhorses. What is so difficult about obtaining a functional smartphone?
I am A+ and Network+ certified. I know the basically means jack ****, but I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to electronics. I know how to take care of them, I know how to teoubleshoot. I built my first PC before my voice cracked. When I try to troubleshoot my phone I feel less productive than if I were to bang my head against a wall.

As an A+ certified tech myself, you should know there is nothing like wiping the hard drive and starting over fresh.
The previous poster walks you through to factory reset the device, which is what I would recommend as well.
When wiping select factory data reset and wipe the cache too.
This will erase the internal SD card contents. Transfer that stuff over to external SD if you need it.
Set it up. Give it a couple reboots.
Computers and phones are different beasts. As I have incorporated the latter more into my business as of recent.
Hey boneless, I'm sorry to have offended you. Remember, I don't know anything about your background or your technical skills. I don't know how high your expectations of electronics are. So please, no offence intended. I'm just passing on my observation in an open forum.
If you want to blow off steam, go ahead. And I hope some of the suggestions help.
