OUYA > Nexus Q? - Nexus Q General

So with the recent intro of the OUYA, I'm wondering what would prevent it from getting hacked, running CM9, and essentially serving as a Nexus Q replacement with better specs for a cheaper price?
Maybe its lack of Android Beam, although if I understand Beam correctly, it uses Bluetooth so maybe a workaround could be created?
Thanks for any info, y'all.

The OUYA looks great on paper but until they actually go into production I wouldn't consider it an alternative.

If a Billion Dollar Company like Google can't create a media streaming device for 99$ why should some nonames on kickstarter be able to create it, together with controller and software?
OUYA is a nice idea, but that's it. It most likely will never be shipped.
Here is a good article on that subject: http://www.technobuffalo.com/gaming...a-used-kickstarter-to-build-buzz-not-funding/

I don't know if OUYA will outsource or not, but I know that for the Nexus Q, Google decided to keep production in the USA, which explains the high price tag.

HP Touchpad 4G 32GB in-hand....

I have a HP Touchpad 4G in-hand and was wondering if there any devs out there who could use the codes from this rare version to make existing HP Touchpads any better?
This toucH pad is 4G made for ATT and also comes stock Dual 1.5 GHZ. Software on box says 3.0.1. I have not opened it yet.
Ok. Is it stock android? Or webOS?. Get whole of me in pm and we can talk later tonight. I will contact Myn and virus about it.

Would have been awesome if it was android. I was told that HP Touch pad II was in dev but was just dropped this week which WAS going to be ANdroid. It was going to be a much thinner version like iPad2.
The version i have is the WebOS version. I contact you PM when I get out of work.

Why would HP ever make an Android device and pay royalties to Microsoft when they own a perfectly ok OS themselves
and it's not like Android's lighting the tablet world on fire

This may make no sense to you but the prototype was just tested and dropped project.
WebOS is a perfectly ****ty OS imo. My friend in R&D told me about the KNOWN memory leak in the webOS browser and causes system instability and the scroll issue. Also how the kernel for the Touchpad does not function properly with Dual-cores but was still released.....
There are MANY bugs with this product. There is also a 7" version of the HP Touchpad I have here that was never released.

The only thing we need is actual drivers to support the touchpad for android. That's it.

Let me ask my friend if he can leak me the drivers if he can get his hands on them.... since the project was officially shut down this week with the HP TouchPad II, maybe he can legally get me them.
Ohh, is it possible to get pictures of the 7 in model? Hopefully on and showing the OS

Not on, though I wouldn't imagine webOS would look any different than the regular Touchpad.

Completely useless info but R&D dept at HP is missing two Touchpad II tablets recently with Android build on them.... They were prototypes. Project recently canned.
Why would they consider anandroid tablet? Simple, webos was a complete and total failure they wasted over a billion dollars on. I'm not making a statement about the quality of the software. I'm personally less than impressed with it but that's not the point. Lets just assume its the most amazing OS ever made and makes both iOS and Android look like a Commodore Vic 20 in comparison. Honestly, its all opinion. Lets stick to facts. Best Buy ordered hundreds of thousands. They sold around 20,000 before the firesale. The facts are no one bought them and no one developed for them. With no apps,no userbase and a warehouse full of product,it was looking pretty grim. Maybe they could have made a go of it but more likely it wouldn't have been life support for a few years and then finally put out of its misery.
If HP still wants to be in the tablet market,Android would not be a bad way to go. In fact, dropping webos and releasing android for the touchpad would not have been too bad of idea rather than the firesale.

Well they didn't, now they do have a large user base, a large development community, and none sitting in a warehouse, all thanks to the firesale.

no you can't do that.
You have to replace the entire motherboard of the touchpad..
ie The hardware is not present on the wifi tablets.

What is a Nexus Q?

First of all, I know what a Q is as I was watching the presentation. My actual question is, what Google wants the NQ be? It seems like another expensive experiment initiated by them and to ask everyone the jump, contribute and to work out a solution. The only difference between this time and Google TV is that this thing is beautiful on its own and people will be relative less picky regarding its function.
The fiction that ElGoog is offering is extremely limited and its accompanying hardware is too much of an overkill to only serve this function. Could this be the first step of GoogleTV's sneaky penetration to stylish households or the first piece of puzzle of the grand [email protected] initiative?

I think that the big idea behind the Q, is the ability to share the control with everyone around it, what i think is pretty cool

I received a Nexus Q at Google IO, and personally, it's not a piece of equipment that I would purchase with my own money. It seems like it does too little for too much.
The concept, however, is very cool. The fact that you can just stream from all of your friends' libraries is exciting. When cloud based media storage becomes the absolute norm, Nexus Q will probably take a more indispensable niche in people's households. Until then, it seems slightly ahead of its time.
I think the answer to your last question is yes; I can definitely see Google making more advances to Androidify more electronics and traditional furniture.

[Q] How can I convince someone to buy an Android tablet instead of iPad?

My dad's friend is looking to buy a tablet and he's asking me for advice on which tablet to buy since he's on the fence. I'd hate to see him buy an iPad because, well, we all know why. He's a complete tech noob and only knows about iPad because that's what he thinks is the "cool one".
Just tell him to wait untill the nexus 7, the price alone should stear him towards android over apple.

don't let your personal preferences influence someone else's choices -
I've been thinking about smartphone for my father several times (still in planning phase) and considering his lack of time and need to have something that simply works out of the box (i.e. no customisation predilections), I always end up with and iPhone as the perfect device for him (even though for me it would mean buying the dumbsmartphone)
Bring him over to a local electronics shop with both tablets available to test.
Let him try them and see what he feels about the two different tablets.
As much as I hate Apple, I'd probably suggest their products to people who aren't the best with technology.
Android tablet have a bunch of choice.. u can take the cheaper one.. before nexus 7 was released, for me android tablet was laggy.. u can promote nexus 7

Yup that's what I recommend for the technologically challenged too. I much prefer Android but there are some apps that Android doesn't have - my cable provider has an IOS app that lets me watch live tv on my Ipad. The Android app doesn't have this and there are a few apps for IOS that haven't made it to Android.
Nothing against Apple other than the crappy Itunes software and the way your device is forever married to the computer you initially sync it with.
Ok so HONESTLY, yes. An ipad would be better for utter tech noobs. BUT, lets not forget about the soul sucking control freak monopoly that is Apple. Yes, it would be a "better" choice, but, supporting Apple hurts Android since they are actively trying to put an end to android devices. Giving them your money, or suggesting that someone else gives them there money is just supporting them and giving them more power.
Try to explain WHY Apple are evil dirty theives(Stealing from open source and claiming it as their own.) And how they are trying to be a monopoly. Also if he plans on having hooked up to a wireless service(Sprint ect.) he will have a hard time getting good cust service. Apple is bad for the future of mobile computing and software development.
There is the kindel fire, which is very inexpensive, and has a really good UI/UX. Also the new google tablet looks great.
Just show them around examples here of people saying 'Moved from an iPad to a X', Android is so much better etc

[Q] which tab's & cell will have best # of custom rom/dev options for my budget

What's up everyone @ xda... first of all i am new here.. my name is Ericka, wanted to say thanks for having me here & allowing me to post!
Ok so the reason for my post... i am looking to purchase a tablet & a new cellphone this week. I love to 'tinker' with things... always have, started with computers (windows) and got decent at developing windows desktop applications in visual studio, learned basic php, web design etc. Now i want to get a basic understanding of the inner-workings of tablets/cellphones running android... eventually start developing apps to go along with my websites i build online (social network type stuff) & eventually im hoping to actually get into custom rom development/feature hacks etc way down the line...if i end up having a knack for it
Alright...main question....if you had a fairly small budget (see paragraph below) and wanted to purchase both a tablet & a cellphone... for the sole purpose of "messing with them"... testing out lot's of different rom's.. figuring out how they work internally... testing out your own custom apps (i dont play mobile games at all...so dont factor that in the specs), and ill be using the tablet to login my pc from work with teamviewer etc. With all that said...which ones would you buy? Obviously I guess i am looking for the tablets and phones that have the most amount of "options" available.. easiest to take apart, find things, hack etc. as in (software/function wise). And preferrably the ones that have the most amount of "actual people/developers" working on them..involved with them... aka "fans of the phones/tablets". You know the ones that have active communities of people i can interact with... along my journey of non-desktop disovery...aka... figuring out this mobile/tablet/wifi/cellphone/android thaang
Oh ya, my budget...super weak... i can't spend more than like $200 or less per-device... i do have a cell contract with verizon (my samsung stratosphere just died, also it had 'hella-limited' dev support) so i might be able to 'upgrade' to a more expensive cellphone possibly....but the tablet i am probably going to have to pay for out-of-pocket. Hopefully my budget won't leave me out of the game entirely...i know that all the 'new devices' i see out there are like 500+ minimum.. Anyways I work 2 jobs.. no fam to help...im just trying to work with what i got. So thats why i signed up here first thing....I figured if i had any hope of being pointed in the right direction, it would probably happen here.. seems like a lot of intelligence combined into one lil place @ xda
#ericka #geek #lyfe
p.s. thanks for taking the time to read my post..im not gr8 at putting my thoughts into keyboards..sorry if it's confusing.. only like my 2nd forum post ever!

I was reading an article the other night @ work about the 'best developer phones/tabs' and it mentioned the nexus series of devices. There are just so many different models/types...wifi/3g/4g, wifi only, different cpu speeds, ram sizes etc. It's all very confusing to a mobile/tablet device #noob. When i research android stuff..every article gives a different opinion leading to yet another article.. all of which just seem to be advertisements for selling apps/new cellphones.. almost nothing seems to be 'user-generated' just people with agenda's. I can't afford to make a mistake and end up with a tab/cell that's anything other than "perfect" for me.. i only save enough $ for new hardware like once every 3 years...so i am just really trying hard and putting this time/effort into making sure i talk to people like you who really know what's up.
Anyways thanks for that suggestion! I just feel stupid...cuz im so good with windows/desktop computers...i got it "down"...i mean just built a #killa #box running a i7-3770k, liquid cooled, ssd's with raptor backups..16gb of DDR3, a R.A.T. mouse for precise graphic design, logitech backlit led flat keyboard.. smoothly running on my own custom windows 7 build/all non-essential services removed..all wrapped up in a stormtrooper looking stryker box. Visual studio and my own apps/services run like water flowing down from a waterfall...i just have like an instinct almost for desktop stuff. When it comes to this mobile/tab stuff.. its like im 15 again learning windows xp..starting over.. but i will figure it out...hopefully with a lil help from you guys!
Nothing can beat nexus devices, nothing comes close..
U can develop apps on anything but custom Roms , huge Dev support, it is nexus. abt various models , they are 3g / 4g, 16gb/ 32etc, now u choose the one that fits our need, these are not different models u see, everything else is same
If budget is less u can go for used nexus or older model

How easy is it to 'custom yourself' into some sense of anonymity with mobile devices. I.E. when the app your using says it gets full access to your phone #, contacts, txts/sms info etc. ...2 Change your gps location, show them a faux cellphone #..i.e. 1-800-ITS-NOT-1984, give them a list of "Grandmas Famous Cookies #1 " through #15 as your entire contact list. I know making myself have some semblance of privacy in the world of "google play" will be the very first things im going to sort out/figure out. Things like that (privacy apps etc.) are what fueled the interests of an entire generation windows developers ya know? If 10 years ago someone said that webpages would get access to your full name, phone #, all of your emails...access to your harddrive......it would have been the death of the internet/pc as we know it. Somehow people just decided recently that any time-killing game is worth handing their family history/life over for. IMO it's kinda pathetic... so those things are first on my list!

with a rooted nexus u control which app has control to what
I would suggest you to buy a Nexus 7 2012 as a tablet as it's much much cheaper nowadays when the new version of Nexus 7 was released, but if you have a higher budget than that I would gladly suggest you to purchase the Nexus 7 2013 version.
For phone, I would also suggest a Nexus device, maybe the Nexus 4 as it has dropped alot in price due to the release of Nexus 5 but it's still a great and rapid device which runs very smooth and is really well optimized.
All of those devices are made for development in mind, and there is a huge variety of custom roms for those devices.
I hope that my advices helps you to chose a device which you will like!

I went to t-mobile yesterday afternoon after posting this..... first of all they are offering to pay off my contract @ verizon. Then they have the new Nexus 7 tablet (with the snapdragon 1500) & nexus 5 phones. After detailing the plan for (both) to me... it looks like $16/mo for each device per month (assuming my credit is good enough).
Overall $100 a month for unlimited service + the 2 devices... (assuming i paid for the mobile hotspot option) which im guessing i won't need since I'm going to root the nexus 5 and use something like opengarden etc. So without the mobile hotspot option [data] it might be about $80/mo total...does that seem like a good way to go...or should i really just look into purchasing the Nexus 7 (2012) and Nexus 4 in cash?
Either way I'm glad i looked into this...my current bill monthly at verzion is $102...for 405 anytime minutes on a crappy samsung stratosphere, which is literally incapable of running instagram for more than 20 minutes...it got lagged out/and heated up to about 120 degrees, and started dropping it's 4g connection in that time 20min time frame.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone...I ended up taking your advice.
Went today & picked up my nexus 5.... the nexus 7 (2013) wasn't "in-stock"...supposedly I'll have it in 4-6 days though.
Omg..the difference between my old stratosphere & this nex-5 are like...1990's nintendo to 2013 PS4. In for quite a shock though when I went to install instagram/twitter, took a detailed look at the "rights" I would be giving up...laughed my butt off..then clicked each one to read each part in its entirety.. I can't believe people are willing to grant app's access which would essentially make their "tiny computer" with 3-6ghz of processing power & 10mbps average connection become 100% remote controllable by an app developer!! The only applications made for windows that gather this much information + can turn on your webcam without notification + can intercept your raw communications + create raw sockets (and run custom network protocols)...would be black market trojan's which are encrypting their data with custom protocols...the types used by script kiddies you read about in google tech news. I'm sure you guys are all used to this by now...but you can just imagine my lil geeky jaw dropping when I realized the full scope of the corporate information grab taking place right now in the mobile market. It's like my geek ex-boyfriend once told me..."If it's possible and not technically illegal.. you better believe every company that matters is already doing it"
So my first step will be figuring out how to get a custom rom on this phone... selectively choose what information/or b.s. information I'll be providing any app's I pick to take a look at. Any suggestions on where to get started? I would really love to learn mobile technology (android o.s.) from the ground up...the same way i learned how to use a p.c... in such a way that i have the "most" amount of control of my system as possible
ok got it rooted....now how do i go about modifying what apps see (not blocking, but providing b.s. info)
p.s. the captchas on this site are ridiculous.... most spammers hire humans to type in captchas now....so all its doing is making our life harder, its not stopping anyone from spamming forums

Yes it can... i did some research on it. I'm lucky enough to have gotten Android 4.4 KitKat (KRT16M) so App Ops is enabled on my phone. Thank god I didn't upgrade to the latest 4.4.2 etc. Because apparently in that operating system... App Ops is no longer enabled.
Thanks for the suggestion! I'm on my way to learning all this great/cool stuff!

Buy an Amazon tablet, iPad, or a tablet running Android version 4.2 or lower.

I'm not a Prime member so I might be missing something here, but doesn't the stock Galaxy Note 8 have Android 4.1?

Might inquire in the Galaxy Note 8 forum too--if you haven't already:

If the Note is rooted, there seems to be a few 4.2 ROMs that might be suitable too... FYI.

The answer is 'yes', and I found the solution by Googling on the first shot. I would normally share the find but the snarky attitude isn't much motivation to help.

From what I understand only approved devices hy amazon work. I am not aware of anyone successfully running prime video on a standard android device. I wish we could... http://www.amazon.com/gp/video/ontv/devices.

Wish no more, it could be done. Verified the workaround on all my Android devices from Gingerbread to KitKat; viewing Amazon Instant Videos works just fine.

Really? There is NO way to watch HD Amazon content on any KitKat device. KitKat uses the Chomium webkit, so It ain't happening period. Now, you can use a browser that utilizes server-side rendering, but again, you are getting a compressed stream, NOT HD & a less than stellar bitrate at that.
The Note 8.0 released with 4.1, but has since been updated 4.2.2. It may still work using the flash apk (which Amazon tends to break from time to time with every DRM update), but you are still in the wrong forum OP.

Used to be true, but outdated info now. Works on my Nexus 7 (2012) with 4.4.2, and it's not via HTML5.

I'm just wondering how come a company such as Amazon who builds/sells Kindle Fire tablets which are essentially Android tablets albeit forked versions (but still Android by heart) that they don't support other Android tablets in terms of an Amazon Prime Instant Video Android app.
The only workaround i see is watching it on my PS3 (which i can't carry on a train or bus when i'm travelling or when i'm on a holiday on a beach somehwere) or buy an iPad (which for me is not anymore viable as an Android tablet does all jobs for me) or a get a Kindle Fire tablet (which i've sold due to lack of apps albeit third-party stores) or email Amazon and wait till they realize that they need to create such an app.
Just bloody ridi:silly:cks!

get the amazon app via the amazon app shop (not from the playstore!) and just try. As i see it, there are now some devices working ok with it, and others are not working. This is the last thing i know. BTW i have an K-R42 (Android TV box) and its NOT working there. i dont know why. Is there anybody not as clueless as we are?!
thank you =)
Amazon Prime Instant Video working on Chinese Tablet
Had a lot of fiddling about to get this working on my Chinese Tablet running 4.4.2 . . .
Teleread had the answer, so I am posting here and hopefully it will help others. The main bit didn't work, but scroll down the page to the posts from users and review the help given by CHRIS on September 17. It was HARD to get my tablet to download the Android Phone app (rather than the default TABLET app) as Google Playstore refused to show the phone app to me. I did a google search and found a link to the app that didn't use either google or amazon. Now I am watching Amazon Prime Videop on my Chinese ONDA iPad look-alike.
HOW TO
and the work-around to get it to work

It was painful but I got it to work on 3 devices – a Samsung Galaxy Note 2, a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 (7.0) and an HTC Evo 4G LTE. Not intuitive would be an understatement! Here is what I did on each device in the order I did them.
1. Download and install the Amazon Appstore APK using link above.
2. Download and install the Instant Video (AIV) APK from the Amazon Appstore.
–At this point I got a runaround where the AIV app would direct me to a website which asked for my email which sent me a link to that same website. Frustrating. Turns out the AIV app runs through the Amazon shopping app – for PHONES – and you have to have the most updated version from the Google Play store.–
3. Download and/or update and install the Amazon shopping app from the Google Play store, PHONE VERSION (the tablet version I have on my Tab3 does NOT work but the phone one does).
4. Opened the Amazon shopping app from Google Play and signed in.
5. Opened the AIV app from the Amazon apps store and bingo!
Playback works well on 2/3 of my devices. It is super fuzzy on my HTC Evo 4G LTE but that is still running 4.1, my other two devices have KitKat and it works great.
Once it’s installed it’s nice but a pain in the ass to get up and running. Why Amazon? Why not just make a nice app for the Google Play store like everybody else? With their very nice Roku and iPad apps this antipathy to Android confuses me.
