WiFi weak and unknown call issue - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Is anybody having issues with WiFi being weak and contacts that you have saved showing up unknown when they are calling? The WiFi is noticeably weaker because usually I would get strong WiFi signals downstairs when my router is just upstairs on my gs2. But apparently my gs3 dosent pick up at all downstairs. I would have to be close to the router for it to work. Any insight?

[Q] Weak Wifi Signal..Help me, im desperate!!!

Hello guys..i bought a RAZR XT910 before about 3 weeks and i didnt notice any problems with it at all..its battery life the way i organised it with smart actions is very very good, better than my iphone 4...i have as well those black marks on the screen on low lighting and black pictures but i dont mind this either..as u can almost never see it...my problem is my weak wifi signal..i never noticed it those last 20 days as i have been working on my phone mostly on my computer desk so the phone was next to the router..the only place my phone gets 4/4 in wifi signal its when its next to the router..at 1 meter distance the signal gets 3/4 strength..at 5 meters 2/4 strength and at 10 meters the signal its lost..and this is only when im at the same room that has the router..if i go to another room the signal gets lost..especially when i close the door...i never had any wifi problem with my previous smartphones and i even had wifi outside of my house...please help me here..im quite desperate..what shall i do? return it and demand a replacement? ask for my money back? is there any way to fix this?
I don't have that problem but I'm wondering if you get it with other networks? Also have you tried resetting your router?

yea i get it with all wifi networks...for example my university, work, home..etc
Hmmm. I just ran the Speedtest app and got 12Mbps download over my wifi. It would be interesting to try that a few places and show it to VZ. Maybe they can test it on their network.

Get wifi analyzer and see if you have good signal. I notice that the Wi-Fi graphic is conservative.
my RAZR was having trouble operating on WPA2-Personal secured wifi network.. so i changed the wifi settings to WPA-Personal with TKIP and the problems are gone so you might wanna try this before you RMA.
Mine had problems with dropped and weak signal which turns out to be because I had Bluetooth on as well. If I turn bluetooth off wifi works perfectly
My WiFi reception is appalling. It only see's my home network where as my three year old HTC Hero is seeing seven!
With my package I have the ability to connect to BT Openzone hotspots around the UK.
Not much use if you can't go more than 15ft from a router without the connection dropping!
Bluetooth is off and I have tried several WiFi analysers from the market, all show a very weak signal.
Hi
On mine, yes the wifi signal (bars) are showing less then with htc desire, but I can connect without problems even the router is on the second floor and I am siting on the first, so reachable from the whole house.
I do experience, that it takes a little bit longer to find the wifi as with the desire, but once connected, works just fine.
I do not experience problems with hidden networks. Mine is not broadcasting the id, still connection is stable.

The bars on mine seem less than what the signal actually is. I connect to my home wifi just fine, from all over the house. I also connect to work's wifi from what seems like the same distance as my previous phone (Dinc)
i'm using d-link dws-125 (usb router)
when i connect and start using internet, the network disconnects in a few seconds. then it connect again and the same... etc.
please, help!!!
same problem here, hope a solution can be found as the phone is unusable in its present state
The "single ball" is enough to achieve 10mbit at my place, however, I upgraded my firmware to OpenWRT and now I get two full lines and the "ball" in the bedroom.
Stock netgear firmware is.. Incomplete. :S
Wi-fi back
Hi everybody,
I have the same problem mine is a razr from france even if i use it in italy, i found that when haveing the phone in the hand the signal gets very worst, if i hold the phone from the edges not in the hand the signal is much better i gain two signal bars, the same happens if i left the phone on the desk, the signal gest very good, as soon as i take it in the hand the signal gets bad, a kind of antenna gete from iphone....
hope this helps somebody
used to have this issue with weak wifi signals, but after installing the 85P radio update, it's gotten a bit better.

[Q] WiFi Vs. WiFi through Tethering - Signal Strength

Hello People,
I have noticed that on my TF Prime, the signal strength is different between connecting directly to a WiFi network (for eg., in my University) and connecting WiFi through the Tethering feature (through my SGS2 phone).
The signal is much stronger when connected through my phone (through tethering) than when connecting directly to the WiFi network.
Is this normal and has anyone else had similar experience?
Also, is there anything that could be done to make signal reception stronger when connecting directly to the WiFi network?
PS., the signal in our university is of top speed and so there is no problem with the WiFi routers / service...
Thanks in advance.. Cheers.
Depends what you mean by signal strength?
Do you mean you get more Wifi bars? This would be expected since your phone is close to the TFP.
Do you mean you get better throughout in Mbps?

Well I'm tethered to my phone right now, and I have 100% signal strength, because my phone is in my pocket. At home connected to WiFi, I get about 60% signal, because the router is on the other floor. So it just comes down to how far you are from the signal. I take it you keep your phone closer to you than the university router? Simple as that... in my case anyway.
Only way to get a stronger signal on the Prime is to get closer to the router.
Thanks a lot for the info.
Alright I get it.. Yes, the phone is closer to the TF Prime.. and when I mean the WiFi is weak, I refer to the throughput in mbps.. I haven't measured, but it's visibly (obviously) slow when connected directly to the WiFi network..
But then, on my phone (SGS2), when I connect to the WiFi network, its blazing fast.. How come? Because my phone is also far from the WiFi router in our department floor?
I tried both the TF prime and SGS2 from my office desk and the SGS2 WiFi connectivity is super fast.. while on the TF Prime is much slower..
But when I connect my TF Prime through my phone with the tethering feature, then the TF Prime WiFi is faster (compared to when connecting directly).

Lol welcome to the Prime.
The further you are from the connection, your through-put (d/l, u/l seems pretty unaffected) is exponentially worsened. The Prime can't hit large distances and keep good through-put: I believe the general consensus being that the all-metal body is at fault.
Your phone connects to that network better because it's plastic, the signal is doing fine. And the Prime connects to your phone fine because the phone is so close to it. But the Prime connects to that network poorly because of interference from the body, even though connected it is hampered. That's all it is, when you're tethering from your phone you're pretty much reproducing the signal from a new AP right next to the Prime.
Now, on to what I thought this thread was about lol. I've noticed that my Prime sees and connects to actual WiFi networks no issue. However, when I tether with my phone I'm often faced with one bar of connection (actual signal strength is fine, ~65 dBm) even though they're literally not a foot from each other.
Ok..thanks for your detailed explanation.. Lol.
I get the idea though..

[Q] "strange" wi-fi issue?

Where I work there are two wi-fi sources connected to the same system - the canteen and the library.
In the library everything is OK, ATP finds the wi-fi and connects.
In the canteen the ATP finds the signal, says signal strength is Excellent (I'm only a few feet from the aerial), but then without me moving, and just a few seconds after it starts trying to connect, the strength drops to Poor, the ATP says 'connecting' or 'finding address' for a while and then gives up saying there are signal strength issues. If I cancel the connection then the signal immediately goes back up to Excellent.
Back to the library and all is fine again...
Any ideas?
In the spirit of full disclosure, I have received the ATP back from RMA for screen issues...it worked fine in both places before.
It could very well be a router issue. If your not having any problems connecting to the other wifi source then maybe something has changed with the router that you used to be able to connect to.... I find that when I'm about to connect to a wifi spot the signal strength doesn't show the true signal strength until I actually connect to it. But I never got a connectivity issue notice like your having. Might want to check that router or bring in another device to connect to that wifi spot that you are having problems with to better diagnose your issue. If that device is having the same problems connecting then you are that much closer to finding the answer.

I found that my signal shows one or two lines when I fail to connect to an APN even when I'm right next to it.
Once I'm connected the signal goes right back to 100% and then it fine even if I connect to it at max range. On my prime it can be 300y in an open area and less inside.
My prime is one of those that have great wifi but 0 gps
Quick question for the OP:
You said you had your Prime repaired...
Did you already have the hotspots on your Prime when you sent it in for repair?
You may want to try and forget both connections and then reestablish both of them.
Don't know if it will help, but I know I used to have issues sometimes when changing roms on my phone where a remembered connection would act kinda weird.
Only thing that would fix it was to forget the connection, then redo it.
Just a thought.

Yes, both were there before I sent it off - and all wi-fi hotspots were still on the system when it was returned (though none of my apps, photos or videos...)

Very slow wifi

Having issues with extremely slow wifi on my device. If I'm upstairs I can't even connect to my router. If I'm downstairs I connect but get horribly slow speeds. My other devices see like 8 wifi networks in my area, but I see only mine with the s4. If I try to enter the name of an open wifi network I know exists in my neighborhood, the S4 can't even see it.
I tested out disabling security on my router, and my speeds jumped up to normal if I was right next to the router. However moving to other locations in the house I still lose connection. If I turn on any kind of wireless security on the router, the speeds are super slow even right next to the router. In the 600Kb range (I have a 20Mb internet).
Almost sounds like a hardware issue to me. Tempted to bring it to Verizon, but who knows if they even have replacement devices at this point.
EDIT: So I managed to get the device to get fast wifi with security turned on by messing with security settings on my router. But if I do a speedtest right next to the router, I get great speeds. If I walk upstairs, and do another test, it's like I went back to 1997. Suddenly my ping is in the hundreds, and I'm getting 56K speeds. Walk downstairs again, and run it again, BAM fast pings and 20Mb downloads. The GNex gets 20Mb speeds throughout the entire house.
I have the device right next to my Galaxy Nexus right now. The GNex can see my network, and 5 others in my area. The S4 can only see my network.
Could very well be a hardware issue with the actual unit - I don't have any WiFi problems at all here - is this running on stock? If so I would recommend seeing if you get a replacement unit if it helps - if not then I would ask what settings are on your router? is it 5ghz (i have had problems with that on ALL devices)
Are you using a case or custom back cover? If so try it without the case/back cover.

I'm running stock rooted.
I'm using a case, I've tried it without and it makes no difference.
My router also does 2.4ghz and 5ghz, and I've tried both and it makes no difference. I generally use the 5ghz, because the signal is bit better.
The oddest thing to me is that this thing can't see a single other wifi network in my area. My other devices will see multiple wifi networks.
Go into your router and disable (uncheck) the WMM option. Odds are youre having the constant connect/disconnect from some routers, especially but not limited to DLink DIR-655 and DIR 855 models. The disconnects and reconnects are quick enough that you sometimes won't see the wifi icon disappear and reappear.
I had the issue (i have the DIR-655) and unchecking the WMM (Wifi MultiMedia) fixed the issue.
I have that option disabled.
I really think this is just the wifi radio being weak compared to my other devices. Not sure if its a defect, or just the way the verizon s4 is. The performance is fine in the same room as my router, or even in the room directly above it. In the furthest from it in the house, however, the S4 just can't get any connection over barely 1 bar, and the signal in wireless signal info is horrible. Not being able to see other wifi networks in my area is the most telling thing to me. Even if I walk around my neighborhood, I can't see any others. Maybe if I walked right up to someone's house I could, but I haven't wanted to look pervy, so I haven't tried that. At this moment my Gnex can see 5 other networks sitting in the exact same spot as my S4. The S4 just sees my networks.
Yeah sounds like yours is defective. On mine I can see networks from all around my neighborhood. (~5 of them)

So today I finally came into work after being off for awhile, and brought my S4 in for the first time. We have open wifi at work everywhere with multiple access points per floor, so no matter where you are you should get 3-4 bars of wifi signal. From my desk where I usually get the full four bars on my GNex, my S4 gets 1 bar of wifi. Doing a speedtest, I get 2000kbps down, 872kbps up. My GNex gets 35Mb down, and around 25Mb up on the same wifi connection. So yea, there is something seriously wrong with this thing.
Damn I guess I need to flash back to stock and take it in.
I took took mine to Verizon and they swapped it out. This one gets a great wifi signal. The capper was when I was in the store and their display phones could see all the local wifi networks, and mine couldn't. Mine was barely able to connect to their instore wifi. New one works perfectly.
