will it be possible in the near future to overclock evo 3d on any ics rom? - HTC EVO 3D

hello there
my qustion is, if it will be an option to overclock our phones on any ics rom ?
because on gingerbread, with the right kernel, it was possible, so I thought and asked myself why it is not possible to overclock it now on new ics roms....
I dont know much about what you must do and mod to enable overclocking in kernels...so dont be afraid or angry when seeing this..
is this because htc is not offering the source code of the new kernel? (btw is this legal? thought that the linux kernel is on gnu licence...)
anyway, was there ever a source code of the gingerbread kernels ? is this the main problem when devs trying to mod something advanced like overclocking possibility?
I've liked my phone on gingerbread overclocked, it was really fast (not the launcher, now it's rendered on gpu as everybody knows..)
and battery also was no problem.......
it would be nice if someone could write a good statement and a good info of what must be done to enable it, because I want to learn also something new..

It probably will be able to be over clocked. Im not an evo user myself but the same thing almost apllies for all phones. I cant give you a big explanation because im noob still but i can tell you something. Overclocking is going to be different in ics because ics has more features meaning more speed. So kernal makers will have to try to make it more ram efficent. Or stop un needed things when ever your not using them. Then it will stay fast without ics kicking in with its slowness at times. Right now thats all i can say. Its 01:00 here and i cant think so i might edit this some other time.
Sent from the phone of Gamers

Overclocking was made possible on gingerbread roms when HTC released kernel sources and thus the developers was able to edit the kernel sources to allow for higher CPU speeds, then build the kernel and release it to us.
The same thing will happen when they release kernel sources for ICS (Or it might even be Jelly Bean by that time, who knows).

there are several kernels for gsm and a few for cdma that allow for this

The kernel source code for the GSM EVO 3D and CDMA i believe was released around a month ago so overclock is there! on the kernel i use not throwing any names i can overclock to 1.8 GHZ !

So it is a ics kernel? I think you're not right, if there showed up a way to overclock on ics, it would stand on the xda homepage and also in some threads but there is not such headline or thread....
Btw, sorry for my english, I'm from germany/poland and have not good grades in english at my school (btw I must do something against it, have just one year before going to university... )

[Discussion] CyanogenMod7

THREAD RULES: We DO NOT ask for ETA or release dates in this thread!
So it seems like everybody goes crazy when it comes to the porting of CM7. But why?
I got my hands on a SGS2 with CM7 installed. Tried it, experienced it a little. From what I experienced the CM7 wasnt something that special. I asked the owner of the phone what he though of the ROM. To my surprise he said "it's just a ROM". He also mentioned that the stock ROM was smoother.
So now I'm wondering, why all the fuzz? What are you expecting from CM7? What makes it so special and so popular?
I'm pretty sure that a lot of people who craves for the porting of CM7 has no clue of this.
(off topic: tbh, i'd rather prefer MIUI.)
edit: for the interface
My sister's Backflip has CyanogenMod 7 installed with 2.3.3 (Not even Froyo is released in Asia-Pacific regions) , it allows her to have OC/UV kernels from 600Mhz to 748Mhz . Her phone is wayyyyy less laggier than stock .(the difference is obviously obvious)
I'm not really good on those areas but arent you able to do that using SetCPU?

he said using oc/uv.. his sister device only support 600mhz by default, but because she uses custom oc/uv kernel, she can achieve 748mhz with help of setcpu. it depends on clock stepping that were supported by kernel, not by setcpu. setcpu only help to configure those clock stepping
Oh, never knew about that. From my use of SGA 800mhz is doing alright.
And as I mentioned, not really good at those areas so I didnt even know that "oc/uv" was overclock and undervolt xD
Some bugs fixed are gonna be fixed in CM. Camera quality should be bit better. Theme engine is built into ROM, so there will be much more themes for SGA. Im also excited about haptic feedback (not sure about this one).
And much more...
What i wish most for, is fix for SoD...

I'm not really excited for cyanogenmod, but for MIUI. I want it so bad!
MiUi is cyanogen based, if I'm not wrong.
First off I'm sure in cm there will be accurate battery reporting. No ****ty jumps in percentage.
Second, if CM is under way I believe developers will include uv, through kernels or modules. Overclocking though, may not be necessary.
Other than that the rom has so many tweaks. Over time and development CM will make our original firmware outmoded because it WILL get smoother.

Speed, stability, power, eyecandy, etc, etc.
But most of all; bugfixes and much more stability compared to stock firmware, as it is said that CM7 is build from the ground up so in my eyes it won't or even can't have the flaws that stock has.
Hey, it's only my opinion.
i think it`s only way to forget about SODs
Cyanogen is popular for a few reasons. It incoporates most worthwhile mods and runs normaly as well if not better than stock. Plus for me on a personal view it will help to get miui for sga.

hahaha..if you want to know..CM is a special ROM I guess, more unlock option on kernel than stock ROM, so I can say CM is a very customizing ROM.
for a prove, u can use an app called Tasker, on that app u can get more customized settings if u using CM.

Hopefully not. It makes it easier for CM devs to work out the bugs and kinks when they don't have a bunch of other kernels out there. I know they've requested devs on other phones to hold off on kernels. Wouldn't surprise me if they did the same here.

yea, cause I root and flash because I wanna use software of my choice hmmm.. i guess i shoulda bought a popular phone, er.. wait.. i mean one that was popular before it was pulled off the shelves.. now im stuck with stock or stock kernel, no oc above 1.6, and no native way to mod the lock screen.. and of course the asshole answer is "if you want XXXXXX then learn to dev.." yea right..
oh well.. at least its a 1/2 step above owning a Thrill. as far as options go..

Do you want to get people mad at you? Show some patience. More dev work is available to this phone than most if not all new phones on the market.
For your sake from the responces that a comment like that will draw, I hope you're joking.

No respectable kernel offers OC over 1.6
The only person who claims OC higher than 1.6 is Mr. "snake oil" Tegrak, and he's too busy violating the GPL to back up his claims.
Nearly everything in my kernel was pulled from the CM7 source base, and I have provided atinm with patches for any significant modification/bugfix. If you could flash my kernel on CM7 you would see little to no difference.
The device has only been pulled from shelves in LTE markets where AT&T is aggressively marketing LTE devices with availability shenanigans and extra discounts to drive adoption - most of these markets are ones where stores didn't stock the I777 in the first place.
CM7 developers make the same request on ANY phone that has an official CM7 port. It's the CM7 way.

[Q] Overclocking the EVO

Hi,
I am using the SenseLess 3.1 rom, and just love it.
I would like, however, for the sake of beeing a geek, overclock it past its 1.2GHz mark.
I know the device is capable of it, I just don't know which kernel to use, and since I don't have enough posts yet, I can't ask this question in the rom's thread.
Can anybody help?
I am not gsm, but is that ROM a gingerbread or ics ROM? I ask because as far as I know, the ics ROMs use the stock kernel which is not overclockable.

Maybe u can try RCMix Kernel or Silverneedle Kernel.....
I think u can overclock past 1.5ghz with other one kernel but depends on your phone too...

EVO 3D kernel source release

Just curious how much this will actually effect ROM development? I know we have a few custom kernels which make some things better and some worse. So having source I assume will make a more solid kernel. Is it different between ICS and JB?

Without source, a kernel creator can use their skills to cobble together a kernel, but it's next to impossible. The current crop of CDMA kernels were created by taking the GSM source code and adjusting it. Some were more successful than others. Now that the CDMA source had dropped, kernel makers can use it as a foundation to add features.

OK, so I've found out that you can't flash a kernel on a driverless grandma's pc. I'll just flash it when I get home...

First i want to congratulate u for succeding in building this awesome rom. I have been experimenting with the rom for the past two days for the use as my regular ROM. Everything i use on regular basis already seems to work quite smooth so i will probably will keep using this from now on. However there is one item that has me a little bit concerned and that is the heat it can produce. this is mostly occuring during heavy activitys as whatching movies or gaming. but it also sometimes seems to happen during light activitys as browsing or teksting (maybe the fast switching between several apps). It is not increasing beyond extreme temperatures (max temp 42 degrees celcius) but i still wonder if this is normal because my stock ROM keeps a lot cooler (max 37 degrees celcius).
my setup:
Desire X with CM9
CPU at 320 -1209 smartassv2

Hi Im new to the HTC desire X but apparently jellybean is meant to be coming out for this phone although htc wont confirm it themselves I was curious if 1 there was a working mod running Jellybean or later and 2 do you intend to make a jellybean rom at some stage, ps I used to have a VF845 running cynagen mod 7 and liked the improvements that had to that ancient phone, currently running ELEGANCIA by V6-maniac which works well but I would prefer cynagen though lol

@atis112, dont you think we can use wp_mod.ko module posted by flar2 which helped disable write protection in previous kernel to do the same for the new kernel. Unpack the JB boot.img, use the zImage as prebuilt and modify ramdisk as required(which i know nothing about).

No. The new kernel need new module. But to build a module, we need the kernel sources.

The modules needs to be built with the same kernel as the zImage. And the modules will be built from kernel source so ramdisk can do nothing in it.

ohok didnt know it had been released, wonder when itll get to my little corner of the world, and yes I know it would take awhile I was asking more to see if anyone had any plans to start developing one or whether they were waiting to see if htc had all the bugs out (chances are theres bound the be) of their stock rom, this I was asking not to just find a fully done rom but to follow the dev of one ( or how ever many of them there would be ) and test some on the weekends when I have time and give feedback aswell as learn more about my own phone, sorry if my exact reason for asking was not crystal clear (and perhaps the question wasnt structured properly I dont know) and while I would consider myself a noob to the dev side of making roms kernals etc I do have some understanding of the process and would like to learn and build upon it.

Cm Roms depend on device trees, so what's fixed in cm9 will probably also work in cmx. Don't worry, cm10 is worth it.
