Why's my phone so laggy?? - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just installed TUG ROM the other day; initially it was ok. I started loading some of my apps on it; I hate having a ton of apps, so I try to keep it minimal. I can't play any full screen intense game without some horrible lag. I thought this phone would be on par with my old Droid X (1Ghz processor, 512MB RAM); it would play just about any game I wanted to with no worries. Am I missing something? Is there some special tweak or script I'm supposed to run? With the SEMC Kernel (2nd one with wifi fixes) and TUG, the phone is definitely better, but still laggy. I have autokiller set to extreme, and autorun disabling all basic apps that are auto-running at boot. I was just hoping for more performance from this phone

Nope this phone is just too old for good games. Maybe they would work if You had no apps installed. I think playing on this device is anyway crappy because of not fully working multitouch

I have to share something about crashes (the reaon for all?)

Hi u all !
I am one of those that couldn't play any game more than 2 minutes without a crash...
As a last try after months... and before considering a hard reset... I tried something that seems to resolve all my crash problems !
What I did:
- Remove ASUS Task manager widget from launcher
- Remove my normal IMAP mail account
- Remove my work exchange account (Calendar, contacts....)
- Removed Battery Monitor Widget
- Removed System Tuner Pro
- 2 pages totally empty in launcher (the rest with many widgets)
Result (after a reboot):
No crashes at all ! and IU seems way faster (good improvement but not enough for a quad core in my opinion... the IU should fly.... even in economic mode...)
I don't know what of those 3 things did the trick (maybe a mix of them)... anyway no more crashes for me...
Would be nice if more people with crashes (and using any of those things) could try this... Maybe this is the bug so many people have been looking for !
Anyway.... after so many months.... and no way to just be able to use my tablet as it should.... come on ASUS....
Please feedback !
See U !
good observation. ill try one by one. ill start with task manager widget first. don't want to remove my email accounts or my system tuner pro. I have system tuner pro set up to eliminate alot of apps from starting up on boot.
Perfect... Let us know what u find.
I have to say that for my is a complete success !! I am trying one by one all my games (I am even not closing them... just pressing home button) all are working.... no reboot needed.... no crash at all (for now).
I am really happy !
Since I have been playing with the settings in the developer section right from the start and I never experienced any crashes I can not give you any feedback on your finding.
But while using my HTC Tegraphone I discovered what is described in that thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599214.
Maybe you check it out and find something that helps you, otherwise I hope you get your crashy Asus resolved soon and someone else can give you additional information.
Good luck
For me, the only crashes i got was due to playing some games while on powersaving mode. The autocontrast or autobrightness (not sure which) that tegra3 forces while on powersaving mode conflicts with a few games.
The screen starts flashing (and the game freezes), and even if you quit the game and re-start, it'll simply crash (force close). You need a reboot.

Congratulations....I agree with you. I would be nice if people would try to solve issues themselves before "angrily" blaming ASUS. If they did that, we'd have a much cleaner, more useful forum.

1. I'm running mostly stock since I bought the device. Yes, not even rooted. Not using any widget either.... And only using 1 page out of 5. Simply using GMAIL app as well with none being sync. Oh, and I manually update all of my apps from Play Store as well...
Since launch, I have installed exactly... 14 apps. Out of those 14, only 3 were added since .21 f/w update (they happen to be games... Dark Meadow, Sonic, Mass Effect). Out of those 14 apps, only 10 are still installed in my tablet (had to delete Google Chrome to increase browser performance).
I rarely play game on my tablet but this is an issue I recently found out as I wanted to play Sonic. Anyways, with this intro out of the way....
Based on my history, when it comes to gaming issue.... I mostly have problems on Tegra 3 optimized games. Games such as Shadowgun, Sonic, Riptide, Dark Meadow........ I actually haven't had any crash/reboot issue while playing Mass Effect.. yet. However, this is only "one" non-tegra 3 graphic intensive non-tegra 3 optimized games. So, it isn't enough of a "data" for me to say.... "hmm, maybe it is just tegra 3 games" yet.
Would be nice if people with no crashes at all could show us this kind of use feedback:
- Using ASUS Task manager widget in launcher --> YES / NO
- Using normal IMAP mail account --> YES / NO
- Using exchange account (Calendar, contacts....) --> YES / NO
- Using Battery Monitor Widget --> YES / NO
- Using System Tuner Pro --> YES / NO
- 2 pages totally empty in launcher (the rest with many widgets) --> How many pages are full for u ?? all ??...
People with crashes could also report the same... and of course please try to do the same and let us know if It fix crashes !
TY for all the feedback !

TY for the info !
This "solution" is to fix a little different problem. Is for people like me with crashes in ALL games randomly. ALL !
Of course we could find some games with real problems with prime. At this moment I have no crashes in any game ! Raptide, Sonic, Mass Effect, Dead Space, Dark Meadow, Gof 2, Shadowgun THD......
TY again !
The bottom line is a rewrite is in order to free up the bottlenecks in the T3. Something its very wrong when benches are awesome and real life performance is just so so.

Task killers could easily cause a system crash...
I don't have crashes, but do see Widgets take a long time to refresh occasionally.

the bottom line is not a blanket fix but rather a "if you have this, then do (or do not do) this." Sorry if you do not agree but my prime works great and yours "just so so" points to you using a software combination that proves unworkable.

as on every android rom i have ever run i agree widgets are the devil.
Mine is like that already, and I still get crashes with many apps and games.
Pretty much anything that uses a bit more memory and graphics.
Update: Even Market is crashing now... rebooted last night, did not use tablet at all till checking Market just now.
Sorry if this doesn't help for my is working incredible good !
Maybe the reason is a combination of SW... (for me was something of those things).
Anyway It is sad that after a lot of months ROMs are not stable enough... even stock one...
UI is also slow... at least slow considering we are speaking about a high end tablet.
Anyway I am happy... now and after various months... I can use my tablet !

Sounds like it's definitely a software issue, try going into settings/apps and clearing market data.
A lot of these sound like typical Android problems that any Android device sees along its lifespan.
OP, this thread was a great idea. I haven't had any crashes but I'm not a big gamer. I would be glad to use your example thread and do trial and error to see what useful data I can contribute to your thread.
Is this only for stock roms, or are custom roms allowed?
well removing the task manager didn't resolve games crashes. I went back to .21(I was previously on new firmware test build) to test this theory out. I'm not going to remove my email accounts. I really love the Asus battery widget but, I will remove it to try out also.
Removing task manager did seem to make things more stable aside from games though. I don't get that stupid message anymore saying task manager has stopped. plus I'm not busy killing stuff on the task manager that pops up. Actually ICS handles the memory manage very well. seems like I have more memory left vs. before when I had task manager up. ill just let android handle the tasks, which it seems to do a great job of.
ill remove battery widget now and see if that helps the gaming issue.
I WILL NOT REMOVE SYSTEM TUNER PRO THOUGH. lol. that app is too valuable and useful. I know that's not the reason. games crashed before I even got it.
All those widgets....
Sorry to disappoint, and please don't flame me but....
I'm running all those widgets with emails and doing heavy gaming and I have no crashes at all. I'm only reporting this cuz you asked someone who has no crashing to post their findings.
I run several Tegra 3 games and have actually never had a crash in 2 months I've had it, other than the obvious "Asus Task Manager quit unexpectidly..."
I've also hopped roms quite a bit. Ran Virtuous a lot simply for the full functionality during school. Then for the last two months, CM9 and AOKP are fully optimized for the most part and I've been back and forth.
And why you say no stable ROMS???? Completely incorrect. I can think of at least five.....
I have no idea of the hell you people are talking about,
First of all I on stock and not rooted, second I run all that stock crap(widgets, managers) + I have over 150 apps installed acording to the play store and I never had a crash unless it was the apps foult. From time to time when I check the memory usage with system panel it gets quite full, but I always seem to have atleast 100-200mb free ram left.I somehow don't play games much, but for example GTA runs like a charm for me. The only way I can make something crash is when I start switching apps like crazy(GTA,Skype,Chrome,Skype,Gta,Teamviewer ect.)
But talking off topic, is there anyway to say repair the glass? I have a nasty scrach on it that I just cant get my eyes off when the screen is off

My prime is not unlocked... I am speaking about ASUS ROMS.
I know there are many people with no problems but at the same time there are many people with problems... Now I am happy because for any reason my ROM is stable... But.... What a nightmare till this moment.... I was getting crashes with ICS all of the time since the first day (prime release in Spain)...
I don't use GPS, Wifi cannot be improved...so I just don't think about it... And I have no browser problems since I use dolphin (the best !) So... The only thing I miss now is a fluid launcher....I am just using 3 pages for widgets, and ui is so slow (more knowing this is a quad core...)... My Sensation moves ui far better... And a are speaking about a sense launcher !
TY all four the info.

Desire X Hardware can support 720p[Explained] & Q.Why games lag[Answered]

The desire X has a snapdragon s4 play processor overclockable(hope its a word) to 1.2 ghz safely(take the risk oc more still need custom kernel).
Its has a Adreno 203(its a model number not version number:cyclops gpu clocked @ 200mhz capable of 720p video recording @ 30fps and 720p h/w playback.
Currently not porvided by htc due to a posible drop in sales of One V if done so (Similarly priced i guess). So with a custom rom say Cyanogenmod you can have 720p and no need for custom players !!!
and Adreno 205 & 203 are basically the same.
And the Cortex A5 is not really such a bad thing cause of the dual core (A9 allows for multiple tasks from a single core.while A5 makes the core finish the task @ hand before moving to the next task). So a fair bit of deving and you got a very awesome phone.:good:
Q. Why Games Lag on this phone then ?
Answer : The reason games lag is not the gpu or the processors fault especially fc's So quit blaming the phone or the processor or the fact that you aint able to buy those humumgously large phones that look like you are holding your dinnerplate to your ear while on a call. The gpu is for rendering.
If you observe the benchmark scores you will be completely thunderstruck and most likey abuse the developer and also uninstall the app for wrong data the fact is the data is not wrong the gpu is really that powerful(Ok not tegra or mali-400 powerful but you get me right.).The Culprit here is the ram the gpu has no ram as on the computer(Tegra does) so it cant store the game elements on a seperate location it takes a portion of the phone ram for this purpose.
:crying:But But But...I got Free ram so- and - so task manager showed it ...
Now you may say that the task manager is showing me 200 -300-512 hell i got 786 free the fact is the ram shown is the ram remaining after all background operations the phone doesnt take into account the cached apps.
cached apps ???
Android takes all apps it feels you may use frequently and stores them in them in the ram so as to load them quickly this is called cached processes(feel like checking them out see runing apps and there check the cached processes).Bigger the ram more the apps cached.
But then with so may apps how can i multitask at all
Well android has an inbuilt task manager this thing removes the most least used apps from the cached processes and thus help release memory this is done according to certain minimum free values stored in Build.prop(Gingerbread and below) or service.jar(ICS and above).
So what do i do now
The answer is a lot well if you are rooted else not so good.
On Stock rom
If NOT Rooted
Well limit your number of background apps dont do much multitasking and stay away from memory heavy apps.:fingers-crossed:
If Rooted
Every heard of v6 Supercharger by Zeplinnox well thats your saviour it helps modify your minfree values(along with various other values) and thus allow for a much better experience.
else
Get a custom rom most are bloat free and much better optimised for the hardware(When i say custom i dont mean skinned stock rom).
Good Luck.:good:

Hi I know this question is not fitting to this thread but since I can see you understand this phone completely I take the shot what about games on this phone? I have problem when I start games it just blinks and I'm back on homescreen... Tried with star warfare and similar games. Dragon slayer lagging and what I heard modern combat lags a lot. Some users told me that problem is the adreno 203. What do you think? I don't play much but only occasionally but I would like to play something better than fruit ninja and angry birds Thnx

Hi Thing is Am no expert this is the information i came across whle doing my research on the phone in question(have decided to buy it!!) from asking people(actually annoying till the answered). And various other resources as mentioned .
As for the games Mordern combat is supposed to work flawlessly(personally seen and there is a youtube video on it) also thhe other games you specified are unknown to me if the games are from the market try asking the devs for help(send a bug report mail them on the email id specified). for it is a fairly new processor and most games running are not really taking the combination into consideration(its basically 205,mali and tegra). And really dont run too many apps (check your background processes & cached apps).
Hope this Helps.

Stock ROM faster than custom?

My friend bought xperia mini with stock ROM version 2.3.4, and i have xperia Live With Walkman.
with custom ROM CM7.2 FreeXperiaProject 150 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1226715
and with custom rage kernel 2.9 for FXP. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24553704&postcount=75
So how the hell does she get smooth playing flash video from this TV site: http://www.navidiku.rs/tv-uzivo/tv-pink
While i have to overclock my phone to 1800Mhz to make it bearlly smooth...HOW is that possible???
I checked she had flash player 10.3.186.3 and i downloaded and installed that one but its the same thing...:/ i had Flash 11 before.
I can play Youtube video 360p smooth and around 1400Mhz 480p smooth. And phone is overall very snappy and fast, i mean i can play N64 games smooth, like Extreme G 2 for example...
So why is mine phone choppy while her is running smooth on stock 1000Mhz...?
1400...1800MHz are you serious.... :what:
You should not overclock your phone to such high frequency... It will burn down your CPU...

I did not do any adittional tweaks, also, only apps that are running in the background are Settings and Lg keyboard, because i kill all the running apps when i reboot my phone to free all the RAM.
Also, as far as i know, you can overclock your phone as long as it doesn't overheat... But still, that's why i want to make it go smooth, i want to make overclocking less needed...
Looking at the kernel thread it appears to be quite old, try using the CM7 Kernel instead, make some tweaks and see how that goes.

Just to be clear, killing some apps in ram manually is not, efficient; it may really affect the performance (many topics/debates already out there). Try testing it with uninstalled apps (clean rom with minimal needed apps). And I agree many other factors may still affect it(scripts, tweaks, etc).
K thx. I will try out some other ROMs and kernels...hope to find something similar to CyanogenMod...I cant use kernel provided with ROM because phone is then loaded with bugs (no second speaker, camera freezing, touchscreen problems...etc) because fix for these only works on Rage kernel.

Galaxy S3-Hopeless multitasking?

I did use the search function. There was a similar thread posted a day ago but I'd like to do a more in-depth query here. The more extensive one has been dormant since April so I figure that I might as well open a new one.
I'm sorry if this sounds like a rant, but I want to do a serious investigation of the multitasking woes in the S3.
Just some background of my experiences:
Having flashed the latest official (ending with MF6), I must say that multitasking is just atrocious and my apps close for every 3rd one I open. RAM is always full, and once cleared it is bogged down again. And again. And again. The iPhone 4, with 512 MB RAM, can manage better than this. The RAM heavy ones (Facebook, Chrome, YT, etc.) are the worst of all-as they close down even when you don't touch the phone for a period of time.
What exactly is using up my RAM? Please don't come back to me with the Free RAM=Wasted RAM argument. I have seen no speed improvement of apps "cached in memory" compared to those that I just opened up.
I remembered back in the days of the S2 release people called 1 GB RAM unnecessary, and to an extent this is true, as the S2 was able to do some serious multitasking of 8-9+ apps without having to close any of them. Other flagships (HTC Sensation) did fine with 768 MB RAM. Heck, the Galaxy S1 seemed fine with 512 MB RAM. The OS can run, camera works fine, I can play videos fine. So where exactly did this 512 MB of extra RAM go, when the Galaxy S3 is upped to 1 GB of RAM?
I have tried zRAM 300 MB, 400 MB, 600 MB. They all make the phone remarkably slow. Initially it does prove to be somewhat useful, but over time multitasking becomes completely hopeless again.
Is there ever going to be a solution to this, or do I really have to get a 2 GB RAM phone to actually be able to use it?
Well, mate, this has been discussed over and over as you may be aware. Honestly, i've lost hope for stock firmwares on multitasking. Some people swear by zram or even swap and while it does work i didn't find the results very good. Someone may come up with a more thorough explanation on how all the ram is being actually used (and it has been written already, i've seen it around) but at this point i just don't really care much.
Bottomline, you have 3 options:
- install some aosp rom and never see this problem again (some others may come up due to lack of sources for exynos)
- compromising speed for multitasking purposes with zram, swap and there were some atempts at plain better multitask management with supercharger and others
- ignore and live with it and try to change your phone for anything else asap - samsung botched this and is making no effort i can see for a fix. If they don't care about you it's only fair you don't care about them either.
I'm aiming for a nexus4 when i find one cheap around. Plenty of power, 2Gb, fastest updates in the business. Should come down in price even more when any new phones hit the market.
This is a really big issue with this phone.
First of all, don't compare it to the iphone, cause the iphone doesn't actually multitask as it freezes apps in the background.
Start downloading something with safari and open another app in iphone. Then the download stops until you switch back to safari.
iOs multitasking philosophie is completely different to android.
Now, having paid 600euros and being unable to multitask is really frustrating. I've tried several things like different roms, external swap, internal swap, zram blah blah.
The truth is that although the stock touchwiz roms offer stuff like multi-window, they are really REALLY laggy in my opinion. I once decided to flash a cm10.1 (aosp) based rom. I haven't regretted since. I felt as if i had a completely new phone. I suggest you try such a rom. you wont regret it.
Also, there are some apps that allow you to freeze background processes. I use Rom Toolbox pro for example and i have frozen many background apps so I've reduced the amount of ram being used. Search on xda, there is a thread about which backgroung services are safe to be frozen.
Also, use greenify. Greenify stops apps from running in the background when you dont need them. Maps for example keep running in the background consuming 20mb for no reason. Greenify such apps so that they consume your ram only when you need them to do so.
Plus, change your LMK settings. The Low Memory Killer is an android service that kills apps when the amount of ram falls beneath a limit. Use an app such as Rom Toolbox to lower your limits so that apps don't get closed so often.
Finally, try zram with the appropriate settings. I use Googy-Max kernel which has bult-in zram support. I use 600mb of zram with 80% swappiness.
Having these things altered i can run at least 5 apps simultaneously without any problems. For example i run facebook and messenger along with whatsapp and skype. When i open the browser to search for something, none of the other apps gets closed.
Ofcourse if you try to run many apps, you may experience app-closing or lags. But remember, the key, is to close apps that you dont need.
Also, if your phone feels laggy just reboot it. For the next 24 hours you ll be fine without any lags.
Hopeless multitasking continues even on CM11 4.4.4. I don't understand what the reason for bad multitasking. When I switch from Dolphin browser to any other app and come just after 5 seconds I find it killed. Even I can't upload a photo to a browser. While I am selecting the, browser page was shut down.

Pokemon Go Performance Issues - Overheating causing reduced Frame Rate & Crashing

I'll start off by saying I basically bought the surnia Moto E 2015 (xt1526) specifically for an affordable way to play Pokemon Go. When it's working it works quite well but when in very high particle effect situations such as Battling or Evolving Pokemon it will start to get very hot and then eventually the frame rate will drop and sometimes the app will crash. I've tried a few different ROMs (Cyanogenmod 13, ResurrectionRemix, Cypher) and all seem to have the same issue. The only Kernel I've tried so far are stock and Squid Kernel.
That being said though I've had some experience tweaking and trying to optimize phones for normal app and multitasking usage but I've no experience at all trying to optimize for gaming. If anyone has gotten this particular phone to run optimally without crashes etc while gaming would you kindly suggest the Kernel, Roms and/or settings I should use for doing so? I've seen that were some good gaming ROM's for otus but those seem to have not been brought over to the surnia.
TLDR: surnia xt1526 overheats plummets in FPS and crashes while battling in Pokemon Go, any help appreciated
Update: After trying many different suggestions though I'm sure they did help out others they did not work for me. My phone's GPU was overheating up to 62 degrees sometimes in particular while many people seemed to be tweaking their CPU's mine was still overheating and crashing with those tweaks.
So this is probably a YMMV thing but what finally worked for me was installing a kernel that had some good GPU tweaks and the one I found best so far has been Inazuma R5 it actually has the GPU's lowest setting underclocked to 100mhz, with 400mhz still being the max and also makes use of adreno idler to keep the GPU cooler.
So if you've been having these issues I'd suggest opening up Kernel Adiutor after your phone starts crashing and overheating and taking note of the temperatures. If it's your GPU look for a kernel with adreno idler. If it's CPU then you can go with some of the other suggestions below.
Edit: I want to be clear that this is mainly only a problem with BATTLE after 30-60 consecutive minutes in Pokemon Go (sometimes also with mass evolution because of the heavy animation effects during evolution) So please specify, if you could, whether or not you've had a stable battling experience for extended periods of time.
Ive been using CM13 and squid kernel r16g and had been experiencing lags in pokemon go until i tried out some settings in kernel auditor. In kernel auditor under the tab low memory killer scroll down and select 'very light' and disable adaptive low memory killer(the first option in the 'low memory killer' tab) and now switch the tab to 'virtual memory' and scroll down to the last option and set the memory limit to around 460-480mb. Now under the tab 'cpu-plug' disable the intelliplug switch and there will be an option called as touch to boost, you just gotta enable that(this option is a major player in making the game to perform well). So just try this and see if this works, it worked very well for, i hope it does the same for you.
P.S. This may cause your battery to drain more as you set ur phone to perform more, So after you finish playing the game set it to default.

I will try this tonight thank you for your response!
Can this phone run the game fine on stock firmware? Or have you only tried it on custom roms?

A friend of mine tried playing this on stock ROM, frame drops lags and crashes all the way.
Havent quite used the stock rom lately....just been flashing roms quite frequently, so can't really say abt the performance of this game in stock And yes, a must try ROM recommendation for all you guys, playing pokemon go, wud be slim rom. Flashed Slim rom yesterday and found it to be light weighted ROM compared to many other roms n that too without a custom kernel. I tried playing pokemon go while in Slim and it worked just fine without lags or crashes. The only thing is that Slim is based on AOSP/CAF so features r limited unlike other roms.
it works fine on mine phone with stock 6.0 and squid kernel, I think that your lags are caused by ram hungry apps in background
ive bought three boost phones in the last couple of weeks just for spoofing devices, all running perfect. I pushed twrp 3.0.2, official cm13, and that's it.
edit: here is the full setup i used when flashing and unlocking/rooting from my google drive:

I don't know I'm not really running much in the background just Gmail and Telegram, as I'm playing more and more it seems like it starts to overheat then starts lagging after doing battles for about 20mins straight. I have to put it in front of a fan and let it cool off before I can do battles again. So I think it's just a hardware issue. Unless anyone else has been able to do battles for more than 30mins without running in to lag and crashing

Have you been able to do battles for more than 30mins straight with no problems?

Yes. The only problem I've been having is I think my spoofer is getting kicked out do to low RAM every once in a while and I've got to reboot it. Everything else is all good. I really love these phones.
