Info for those having Data Issues - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just a little insight from a VZW "Person"
Our Spotty 4G seems to be in a direct correlation with the iPhone/idont 5 coming out.
Ever since the first couple days after the launch of the iPhone 5 we've all experienced data drops, spotty 4G and sometimes almost an unbelievably long time stuck in 3G.
I have a GS3 and fortunately a folder with a bunch of different "modems/radios" however, until I found what "modem" (as they call it for the sammys) worked best, I was just like you Tbolt peeps. Angry as all hell at that idont coming out with LTE. Especially when half or more of the people that got it, don't even know what real 4G is and they're raining on our parade!
I get to listen to it every day now from my GF. Her Tbolt that I hooked up and gave her was effing amazing three weeks ago. Now... it just drops and hangs data way more than my GS3.
That's why I got on XDA tonight. To see if there were any new radios (as us HTC people call em) out and about. No luck thus far, but I wanted to share some knowledge with the community as to the cause of all this mess. Thanks a lot Apple!
Your over popular smartphone for dumb people is not only an over rated joke of a phone for sheeple, but its taking connectivity away from our awesome (slightly older 4G phones) that most likely won't be getting any more radio updates. This is probably why my GS3 isn't too bad right now (knock on wood) because of the newer modems still coming out.
Ever get double texts or have friends with really freaking slow 3G Droids??
We can thank the idont 4 and 4s for that as well. They over saturated the 3G market which Verizon is not putting another DIME into. So unfortunately Tbolt users and other "older pioneer 4G devices", looks like unless there are new radio leaks, we're kinda SOL.
So there you have it...
Now find that friend of yours that has an idont 5 and thank them for stepping on our toes and our precious 4G on the pioneer phones.
Sent from my galaxy tab 2 tethered to my GS3 with great 4G while watching my gf's Tbolt drop and regain signal :/

By uninstalling the Facebook app and using the Liquid ICS ROM I've not had a 4g drop yet. Before, with Facebook, I'd get drops every time it was running in the background.

New to the Amaze.

Hello!
I am coming in from years of HD2 use, running gingerbreadish as droid.
Happy with my hardware, goodness the camera is awesome!
But the software is kinda bleh.
My HD2 running droid almost seemed faster, both on 3g, and internally with switching apps or even pictures. Of course I understand the handicapping that T-Mobile curses their phones with, but is anyone else having 3.5g issues?
Do the current custom ROMS produce better radio reception?
I'm in no hurry to flash, everything else is slick, exactly what I needed in a phone...but the weak data stream (10mbps fluctuating to 0.01 mbps and back during downloads) is irritating.
WiFi is not an option, I simply want a steadier data connection.
EDIT: My entire usage footprint is bright T-Mobile pink indicating awesome "4g" (yeah yeah I know, there's no such thing?)

Just got my Amaze a few weeks ago... and I do believe this phone was promised to have a great connection... "HSPA+ 42" .... Mine works OK... but I live in Chicago. Sometimes it all depends on where you live..... if you live in a major city then you shouldn't have too many signal problems.
I found a T-Mobile customer support link you might wanna check out....
Tell me if this works for you...
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-3294
Not sure I understand what your issue is, but if you're less than chuffed with the software, stay tuned.... Amaze is one of the models that HTC has confirmed as getting ICS in "early 2012" (probably more like Q2, perhaps Q3). Whether it will get Sense 4.0 hasn't been documented, but I presume it will. I don't believe Gingerbread (2.3.4) or Sense 3.0 were optimized for the dual-core S3, so ... perhaps the update will bring snappier performance. (Hands-on reports of Sense 4 indicate it's pretty slick, a major improvement.)
From what I've been told, T-Mo's HSPA+ network is spotty ... great in some spots, so-so in others. I'm supposed to be in a prime spot, and I think I'm in line-of-sight of my local tower ... but in my second story bedroom, I can only get 17MBPS down (with Ookla Speedtest.net). (shrug)
And a week ago, AT&T (I canceled with them in December) turned on LTE in my section of town. Oops.[1]
_____________
[1] Update: ... And this week AT&T announced the end to even the grandfathered unlimited data plans (like I had from 2006).
honestly can you even tell? to browse on your phone i dont think you need a better connection than 10mb/s i get 2 because of the area im in (WIND is the Equivalent of T-Mobile USA) and im happy with it lol ( speeds are supposed to be 5-12 mb/s

AT&T doesn't have good plans... My boyfriend has LTE ... he has the SGSII SKYROCKET.... he only gets 2GB of data... then after he exceeds... they give him AOL DIAL UP SPEEDS... and he has the UNLIMITED PLAN.... and he pays $115 / mon.
I pay $85 / mon and get 5GB of data on the HSPA+ 42 network.... hmmmmm
I WIN. (and so do you.... )
I get 10-12mbit connections, compared to my hd2 which got me 1-2mbit. there is a difference. Also, I feel like the amaze is slightly better, since the hd2's network capability is horrible, after 1 hour of being in a dead spot, it won't try to re-establish a network when I'm back in a signal zone. The only way to get it again is to restart. Tried it with multiple radios/roms.

Yeah, when I am in good 4G coverage I can hit 20 download and 5 upload. It is actually faster on 4 G than on my WiFi, lol!

Make sure you update the SIM card to the new "4G" SIM cards. I used to work at T-Mo and you need the new SIM card to have better connection.

I actually prefer 4G over my WiFi. But I don't wanna get throttled -__-
Sent from my HTC Amaze 4G using XDA App
I did the sim switch, which seemed odd because I used the sim in the box.
I was throttled down to 0.06 mbps, consistent until about an hour ago since 3/1...voice cleared at exactly 12 am...data throttle cleared later (imho, this is wrong and should be illegal under an unli mited contract).
FYI: I maxed out at 14g during one billing cycle before the caps...I am not the enemy...I blew up my data just to see what it could do, all on the hd2, no tether/hot spot.
My head hurt for a week.
So, fixed the light bleed, got the sim, found light slivers creeping from both lower sides of the screen...but only when the capacitives are on, and soon to be rooted etc.
But seriously, your speeds are depressing me...I average 4 down, .23 up in Kansas City...home of Sprint.
Shouldn't be too long, I'll have it purrrrring.

I'm not sure you'll get better download speeds then if you already have the latest sim card. The amaze has yet to get a way to flash different radios...
Coming from the Hd2 your going to be rather disappointed with the development here. If only we could pull Tytung over here.

Agreed!
At least the development here isn't born of pure frustration like it was for the HD2.
The countless denials and misdirection from T-Mobile, my 6 years of problem free history ended when I activated the powerful nightmare (all cell giants have accepted the dark side by now).
It was a year and a half before I felt comfortable using an sd Rom.
I still don't trust the hardware for a full wipe...

What are your initial thoughts?
Imho, this is the HD3...
My thoughts? Hmm....I love this device far more than than the hd2 for the sole purpose that things work. As in its android from the box and I don't need to take wp6.5 off resulting in bad battery. The hd2 is a great device and I love it and this is kind of like it except no hardware buttons and less devs. But so far with what I've seen with the 5 days I've had this phone its amazing, and it was a great move to switch from the hd2.

The addition of the forward facing camera, dedicated camera/vid button, and a larger market (pathetic, anemic, sorry assed Windows marketplace, and the millions of harsh unknown sources offering buggy ugly 'apps' for 6.5) is really all I needed in the Leo to make it 100%...
I'm not in any hurry to tweak this phone, it's pretty much where my Leo was, save for the obvious refinements.
The process is a bit more involved on this unit, so we'll see.
ICS looks pretty good too.
But for now, yeah, I made the right choice over the Samsung GSII and I am happy overall.
No restarts, dead pixels, overheating issues on either unit.
Couldnt have said it better. Although I do recommend to root your phone and flash a diff rom + kernel - its a battery saver

Okay, when people have sigline images that are 4 times the height of the post, it's time to turn off signatures. C'mon people, be respectful of those with limited bandwidth, or ... who want to read your words, not ogle your MSPAINT skills.
My "4G" speeds are erratic as heck. One minute I get 2.7mbps, the next I get 188kbps. Welcome to the ISDN era...
Could this be because I dropped in the SIM card from my old HD2? What voodoo is in the SIM card makes that much difference? I thought the new SIM card was just for WiFi calling...

Anyone come from a Sprint Epic Touch 4G?

Really want the giant screen of this phone, even though I really like my Epic Touch 4G; Obviously Sprint data speeds suck right now, but, not sure ATT would be that much better here in the SW 'burbs of Chicago..
Anyone out there that switched from the ET4G for this bad boy?
Are you glad you did, or not so glad?
Thanks so much for your input!
I came from a long line of devices on Sprint, my last being the E4GT. I'm extremely happy with the Note, no regrets in leaving Sprint at all.

In not far from u (la grange) and att has improved ALOT in last few years. Still get dropped calls here and there but not like in the past. LTE is just wow and that's even with us in Chi town land not getting nowhere near the speeds other markets are. (10 mbs here and Dallas is at 40mbs) .
I've had VZW LTE on my galaxy tab and left them, was never on sprint but remember Nextel
As for the Note I don't think u will put it down much, battery is mehhh but given how much I use it I'm not complaining and there's always a charger near me. My mother lives in wiilowbrook and I have not had any issues in that area, Indian head park is weak in my experience.
Hope this helps.

How does the 4glte work inside your house?
Even though I am really close to Sprint wimax towers, i really get no 4g signal inside my house...
Do you drop calls inside your house, or out on the road?
I work from a home office, and using the phone part of the "package" is very important to me...
Thanks again!
I live in Burr Ridge. Last month I sold my Epic Touch 4g on Sprint for the Note.
Back in the day I'd had the iPhone 3g on AT&T and the service sucked, and I'd swore I'd never come back to AT&T, but I really wanted the Note. I've had no problems on the Note on AT&T...no dropped calls yet, and love the 4g speeds. The 3g speeds I get on AT&T are faster than any of the 4g Wimax speeds I used to get on Sprint.
Fyi here is a speediest from my house and I'm not on lte (it always says 4g in the statusbar, when you're in LTE you'll see a little "lte" in there as well)

Came from sprint, California. It's more expensive but the service is awesome. Unlimited data was a cruel joke unless I was in 4g area, staying still with a door or window open

thats great to hear!
when I used to have ATT a few years ago, I dropped calls ALWAYS in certain areas; rt 83 and 63rd street, 55 and 355 overpass, it was pretty pathetic to tell people on a call that you had to hang up, because you were going to lose the call..Plus, when I lived in Darien, I had to go out side to make or receive calls, and that was just stupid, especially in the winter!!
Glad to hear they have upgraded the network in the SW burbs...being an older guy, I actually use the phone for phone calls first and foremost..
and, as far as pricing, it appears that with 3 lines and the family plan, I will be paying about 30 dollars a month LESS with ATt than with sprint..hard to believe, but I confirmed the pricing yesterday...Sprints 10 dollar "premium" to own a smartphone now is just bull****..

Yeah, rooting was just as easy. Also, there aren't may custom Roms, but Quality > Quantity.
DAGr8's Saurom rom is the only ROM I've flashed so far (gingerbread ROM) and I've had no complaints. There also has already been an ICS leak and various ROM's that I haven't tried yet and we know a real release will be coming.
Also, Cm9 is supposedly coming:

I have a split level house so I'm more in the lower level and I do have spots where I get weak call signal but still able to make receive calls. I too work out of my house (transfer office to cell when I leave) so I rely on my cell for work mainly. LTE reception is very good for me at home but I do use my wifi mainly when home. I have been with att since it was Ameritech and have had every iPhone since the first one but can safely say iPhones cell reception is crap compared to the note. My wife and daughter have iPhones and they still drop calls way way more then me. I never had the phone ur coming from so I can't attest to compare as I have been a sammy guy since the galaxy s and cannot see myself going to another brand.

I'm just hoping the service in my area of Chicago land has improved over what it was 3 years ago, when ATT was the absolute worst in my area..
I never drop calls with sprint when I am out of my house, and inside of it, I have been using an Air Rave device that they provided, so that isn't an issue at home.
Their 3G data is horrible, and, they claim its because they are currently upgrading their network; I gotta tell ya, it was just as bad when they weren't upgrading their network. Typical 3g speeds are 100-400kb, so the thought of getting 5-10 megs from ATT is very exciting...

If I were you, I would test the Note in and around your house for a few days to make sure the reception works well overall.
At times, the data jumps back-and-forth between HSPA and LTE depending on your whereabouts. But...I don't believe it really drains that much battery.
And I agree how Sprint's 3G is an absolute joke....I thought VZW 3G was horrid...but when I saw it on Sprint, it was unbelievably slow.
They continue to advertise that they're the only 1 of the big 4 providers who still offer "truly unlimited data"....but what's the point of having that if you're basically already throttled with dial-up speeds.
Only thing i hate about note is qualcom processor, thats only aspect I miss of s2

yeah, I plan on testing it immediately, but, the problem is of course, that once I port the number over, of their service sucks, its a pain to cancel with them and go back to Sprint; I love the Sammy E4GT, but, I am really switching carriers to get the Note, not Att...I just hope all the improvements in my area that I have heard/read about our true.
I mean, this is the Chicago land market, and I am certain ATT wants to come off as a good provider here..
But I really wanted this phone first and foremost..

[Q] Thunderbolt Radio? Signal Issues

tl;dr - TB is losing connectivity, almost no 4G, do I flash new radio? Which one? (post sounds less ignorant)
Out of nowhere I started to experience some really crippling internet & data issues. To be fair, I'm running CM7.1.1 which says that it has some known data issues, but I think these are a bit much.
I started to lose 4G connectivity completely - the symbol will show up on the screen, but just won't connect to anything. If I change the network mode to CDMA / EvDo it usually will pick up 3G at OK speeds, and will usually have 2-3 bars for regular cell coverage. 3G will work in and out, in for the most part. 4G I have managed to get up for about an hour, and now I can't get it at all.
Previously, I had a few disconnect issues but I'd reboot and everything would fix up quickly. I've done about 15-20 reboots in the past three days to no avail.
I figured that it might have something to do with radios... I spent a solid half hour or so researching flashing RUU's (how to, problems, etc.) and there is a LOT of conflicting information. Would flashing a new RUU help my issue? I think that it might... I'm currently on baseband 1.39.00.0627r (From the 1.70.605.0 RUU), and the latest is MUCH more recent.
I'd love some help / advice with if I should flash a new radio, which one, and if there is anything beyond the regular flashing / warnings that I need to worry about. Also, should I flash both LTE & CDMA separately? The names of the zip files are the same...one at a time? probably a noob question?
Hope this wasn't a repost of something, but I did a search first and couldn't see anything quite the same as this. Googled as well.
Cheers
Try ThunderShed it is much more up to date than the version you're running.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
Thanks! If I flash a new radio is it going to wipe the device anyway? I wouldn't mind keeping my current setup, but if it's going to wipe there's no reason NOT to just upgrade to ThunderShed.
No. Try the radio that came with the newest ota. That's the one I'm using and it is working well.

Exact samething started to happen with me except I'm running liquid gingerbread 3.2. Out of nowhere. My wife's thunderbolt gets great 4g connection but mine only 3g. I flashed latest radio but no dice. Wonder what's going on. I'm about to reset.

I've had the same problem twice before.
First off, I normally use only around 4GB of data a month, except during months that I have to travel. I never, ever tether (too risky).
In December 2011, I went to go visit some family over the Christmas/New Year's break. They rarely use the internet, so they opted for a cheap dialup home connection. Luckily for me though, the area was covered by LTE. In order to keep myself occupied, I streamed some Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, and other videos to my phone. After around 20GB of usage, 4G and 3G just died. Despite me changing around from CDMA Only to CDMA Only (PRL) to LTE, I was only able to pick up 1x. Flashing new radios didn't fix it, flashing new ROMs didn't fix it, leaving the battery out overnight didn't fix it, travelling an hour away to another family member's house (different tower) didn't fix it, getting a new SIM card didn't fix it, getting escalated to Tier 3 support didn't fix it, completely formatting the phone and installing official RUUs didn't fix it. I spent about a week trying to diagnose the problem, and was about to just use my insurance to get a replacement. Put my phone in the charger one night, went to bed, woke up, and 4G and 3G were back, about exactly 7 days after it first went down. Very odd, but I just chalked it up to a system glitch.
However, the same thing happened again in May 2012. Again, I visited my family and watched videos streamed to my phone to keep me occupied. About 10GB into the month, I had to leave for a trip to the other side of the country. While there, I had some downtime a couple of evenings to watch some movies. At 15GB, a similar thing happened. I was unable to connect to 4G, but 3G (albeit terrible connection) and 1x (faster and more reliable than 3G actually) worked fine. I thought that maybe the tower I was connected to was just experimenting with 4G before officially flipping the switch. However, no matter where I went, I was still restricted to 3G and 1x. After a 2000 mile flight back home, I was still restricted to terrible 3G and 1x. Again, after about a week, the problem went away and I was able to get on 4G again.
So, either my phone gets finicky when I have a lot of data usage, or Verizon likes to temp. ban 4G users who use lots of data in a short period of time.
You, my friend, were being throttled. That is exactly what happens when you get throttled.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
My data usage was less if anything. You sound like you were getting throttled, I wasn't... mine are just obnoxious connectivity issues.
I flashed (and am still working on) Thundershed now, it's a beautiful ROM - I'd recommend to anyone running CM7.1.1 on TB to just switch over... it's the same thing (base CM9) and you get ICS as well which seems to have increased the performance anyway.
There were other annoying bugs with the TB build of CM7.1.1 such as the inability to have headphones in the phone while talking (people just couldn't hear you) and some weird proximity sensor issues on phone calls.
Hopefully this new ROM is going to take care of the issues that previously annoyed me... the TB is a great phone and I'm glad I'm going to be able to get the most out of it now.
Thanks for the tip off to that ROM, disconecktie!
Yea its a fantastic rom. I ran sheds stuff on the Eris for around 2 years and if it wasn't for him that device would have died quick.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
And now you're running this on your TB? Yeah, seems like the dev community over there really has a lot of respect... he's active and does bug fixes too, really great stuff. Cheers
He's a great dev but you wont see him on xda. People over here pissed him off. I didn't like 1.5 much but the fixes he brought to 1.6 made this rom awesome again.

As far as ur radio issue I was having the exact same problem yesterday and I live in the southern California area. My girl was perfect 3g on her dinc, I couldn't get any data at all and when I did, only 3g. Killed my battery quick too cuz it kept having to reconnect. Quite annoying, seems to b better today tho. Could of been just an off day. It was weird too cuz i finally shelled out for a rezound battery and that was my first day experience. Lol I thought it was the battery till today when its been solid all day. Running gsb 3.3b btw with imos kernel.

.19 radios
I'm running Thundershed 1.6 w/ imo lean 184 6.2.1 using the .19 radios and other than having the GSM and LTE options ALL available to choose from, I'm having no issues at all. The 605.9 radios are very stable too. Hope this helps!
I suspect Verizon was working on the network for the past week or so. I had issues too, nothing big and I saw a few posts on AC where people had issues too. It seems to have resolved itself now.
I am in southern Cali too having the.same issue 4G goes in and out, 3g is solid I don't think I am near anywhere 4gigs...

Hello all. First post. I'm a noob. Watched the video.
I see this post is 3 months old.
I'm having similar issues at home in Tyler, TX (we have 4G). One day my Verizon thunderbolt signal drops to 1X or nothing at all as far as data. This happens for several days. Verizon creates a ticket and calls me 2 days later to tell me it's not them. I travel to northern Kentucky (cincinnati area) to visit my son. Issue follows me to Kentucky. I root phone but am still using stock rom b/c I don't have a clue what I'm doing!
I travel to Dallas and my phone is healed. Blazingly fast. I can't keep up with it - it's so awesome. I decide I like this piece of crap after 1 year of hating it.
I travel home to Tyler today. I'm back to 1X or nothing at all.
Questions: So do I flash a rom with a different radio??? Is that how I can get a better signal? Scared straight b/c I have an E-key app that I use to get me into homes (home inspector) and I can't afford to have that app not work.
Thanks in advance

I live in overton tx and I don't have that problem. Maybe try getting a new sim. You may also check to make sure the golden tabs on the back of your phone are in good shape and make contact with the gold pads on the battery cover.

Considering switching to verizon, and the razr maxx

Hey all,
Im a sprint evo 4g owner, and am considering the razr maxx from verizon. Where I live here in maine, verizon has the best signal, and network reliability of all service providers.. or so I hear anyway...
On sprint, I roam prolly half the time, and anyone that has had sprint knows roaming speeds blow goat nads When I'm roaming and have full signal, I max out at 128kbps... Verizon guys I know out here get 1mbps +/- with 1-2 bars, add in the multiple dropped calls for seemingly no reason, and... I'm about done..
The evo has been a great phone, had it almost 2 years now, I rooted a lil over a year ago, and have pretty much got the full use out of it, considering its limitations from the network its on..
Guess what I wanna know from you guys is...
How is the network? Drop calls often for no reason? Data speeds pretty consistent?
How is verizons customer service? I've heard pretty horrible things about it, but never had any use myslef... I've found Sprint customer service to be great...
How is this phone in general? It has a huge battery so thats another plus... Even with my rooted evo running custom kernels/roms etc, the battery life leaves much desire... I see on verizons page that the maxx has up to 21.5 hrs talk time.. Thats about 3x what the evo was advertised for... Does it improve even more with custom roms/kernels?
Wifi hotspot and tethering.. I assume once I root, this will be easy enough, just like the evo?
Hdmi... does it work? Sprint shipped the evo with a useless hdmi out port... lol
Google voice... I will not be paying for text messaging, as I use gv for most texting now, does it play nice with the maxx? Also, how about sip calling? I have no signal at all at my house, so I use the wifi for gv, and sipgate, and just forward my calls to the gv #
I guess thats about it guys... I'm sure I'll think of more later, but I pretty much have my mind made up, unless some one points out that some of the thing I asked about simply wont work,,,
Thanks in advance
I actually just moved to a razr from Sprint last month. The speed difference is night and day. Customer service/support so far has been good. No complaints.
The network? 4g rocks. voice calls, never seem to drop. I have coverage in many places where I didn't before. Sound quality is about the same as sprint.
I have the razr, not maxx, so I can't speak to the size on it. I love the razr so far. HDMI out does work on the razr, so I'm assuming it does on the maxx as well. And yes, easy to root and do what you want to it
Motorola phones have the best signal strength of any phones, in addition to Verizon's network which is quite good.

Thanks for the replies!
4g wont matter much for me, as there is no lte in maine yet... Sprint does have wimax in select few spots here, and last year when I first tries it out, I was getting speed test result of 13mbps down, and 8mbps up, In those same places I now get get results of 1mbps op/down (I assume there is more use now), pretty weak considering thats what a good 3g speed should be... and dont even get me started on 3g speeds, or consistency... I notice huge changes while im sitting in the same place...
I never had good luck with motorola phones in the past (tho its been about 7-8 years since I've owned 1) But I hear they have come a long way, and they do hold signal better, or at least show your actual signal better...
I guess... really, I already know the network is gonna be better... cant b any worse, thats for sure... I just wanna make sure I'll be able to use the phone for the things I really need it for... ie:
Google voice - Heard mixed reviews of it with this device, some say it works fine for texting, some say not at all... are the "not at all" ppl just stupid? lol
Same with sip calling - does verizon prohibit it on their network, or block me from downloading the needed apps from the market? I know there are ways around that, but I like the idea of simplicity, which is why we own smart phones in the st place
Rooting; from what ive read, is not terribly difficult, although maybe a bit more involved than rooting my evo, so not too worried about that...
WiFi hotspot - I have no intentions of paying the $30/mo verizon wants for this service, as I hardly use it, but I need it to work when I do use it, and hell... If I'm paying for 10gb/mo of data, I'll use it however the hell I want ... This just as simple as the evo? (usually this feature is cooked into rooted roms on the evo)
Also the battery life - The only reason I'm even considering this device is the 21.5 hrs talk time, and huge 3300mah battery... So is it that great?
I guess those are the major things, the rest is prolly gonna be mostly based on opinion.
I am using the groove IP app. It is in the market. Yah Google brought it back. It let's you use voip with your Google voice. Call quality isn't too bad.
Yes the battery life is amazing. I can get 8 hours with crazy insane use and 4g on or be a tad more conservative by sticking to 3g and get 10-12 hours heavy usage. With texting over 3g with an app and browsing with juice defender I made it to 30% in 17 hours.

Wow!! that is unreal!! Even with my evo rooted, and me limiting and monitoring apps, etc... I'm lucky to get 4-5 hrs of heavy usage!!
As for the voip... I am using voice+ from play store now... Used to use gv callfree, but that was removed a while ago... call quality isnt too bad, but there is at least a 1sec delay... this could just be not enough cpu or ram causing that tho...
IMHO... wait to switch. This phone has been top of the tier list so long, it's run is bound to end soon. I advise waiting for something better, it should only be a month tops. even if if the GSIII isn't your cup of tea.
A quick look at coverage charts shows just how INSANELY more coverage you could get with verizon over sprint.
Like you, in my area Verizon has the best coverage and even amongst the verizon phones I've had (including a V3m Razr, EnVtouch and my current Razr Maxx) the Maxx is HANDS DOWN the best at reception night and day over the touch (which was one of the better reception wise), my envtouch wouldn't work till the very top of one hill on my drive to/from work and my Maxx works at the bottom of that hill in the valley several hundred feet lower (300-500 approx) and is intermittent in the valley itself, but NONE of the phones I've seen have had ANY service in that valley, and we don't even have 4G here yet.
I literally am amazed with all the places were this phone works, even at work where we have a small desktop cell repeater (single room style) my maxx works from atleast 50% further away from the repeater then my envtouch did.
It's a bit batter hungery but this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ndroid&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd is great for VOIP using your google voice number.
Wifi Tether is great for rooted phones to share the connection and works right out of the box without having to configure ANYTHING.
And if you download matt's DroidRAZRutility rooting is a BREEZE, literally hook up phone set it into USB debugging mode and click the choice for rooting, phone will reboot twice (IIRC) and about 5 minutes from when you started it, its done.

Ya... no samsung products for me... I had the moment from sprint... WOW... what a p.o.s. lol Then they moved me to the Cant remember what it was called, but it wasnt much better.
The other thing is... I really dont wanna wait... I dont see naything all that much better coming fro a while.. Maybe a droid whatever 1.5ghz dual core, but I dont see that being a whole lot better than a 1.2...
Idk... Anyone else think I should wait?
Dont see any great things coming from sprint any time soon, they got their heads stuck up their arses with the i-crap...

Exactly what I was hoping to hear! I dont need the next best thing... I just want something that works where/when I need it to, and having 3g everywhere I only have 1x now, is gonna be huge for me... It opens a whole new sales region for me....
I won't go to any other carrier until they offer unlimited data or at least reasonably priced tiered plans. I love paying $110 a month for unlimited for my wife and myself. It would be over $180 on Verizon.
I made the switch from the evo 3D to the RAZR and I'm one happy guy! Service here in northern Virginia is excellent compared to sprint,as well as 4g data speeds that top out at 20 something Mbs!!! No dropped calls, nothing so far! Call quality is crisp and clear. Now onto the phone....this is actually my first Motorola phone after the original RAZR ha! Build and quality wise its real good and durable, the only downside is (coming from a line of HTC phones) boot loaders are a complete ***** lol. Other than that, everything is A1 for me. I pay around $80 per month,I have the 420 or something min plan+6gb data plan + my men's wear house discount lol. Anything else you need to know, feel free to ask! This RAZR forum is one of the few that doesn't have as much trolls, haters,*****yness and empowering individual false personalities like the other forums had In short.....make the switch, you will not regret it!

that reminds me, If you've ever served in the military, bring your military ID to you local verizon and you can get something like 10-20% discount (can't remember exactly) off your monthly bill, something we just learned about when we were getting are Razr Maxx's activated.
If data and minutes bang for your buck is a major point I should also mention Straight Talk has an option now where you can take any cell that works on AT&T and put there sim card in it and have unlimted everything for 45 bucks a month, you might want to think about that if AT&T service is good enough in your area.
my wife and I both have the razr maxx and we regularly get 2 days out of the battery w/ moderate usage.. lots of texting, web use (4G for me at work).. streaming Slacker radio for 8 - 10 hrs while at work (to be fair, I cache the music to my sd card on wifi at home so I don't eat up my 4gigs)...
The battery life on the maxx is sick.
Been a long time sprint user and ROM flasher. Company moved to Verizon and I got the maxx until sgs3 drops. Great battery, development doesn't seem as active as the sprint devices were.

Just wanted to update on this...
I made the switch! And tho its only been less than 24hrs... I can already say I wont be looking back. The drive home from the verizon store was enough in itself to sell me on verizon, and this device! I get full signal 3g now, in places I either had no signal before, or a crappy roaming signal that was no reliable. I was actually able to stream pandora in my garage for a full 3 hrs!! My sprint evo wouldnt have even made thru one song... Aside from the unreal battery life (took off charger at 5pm yesterday, and still at 80%) the device dosent really seem any better than my evo was, but the difference in the network is night and day!
Anyway... thanks a lot guys! And once I get used to this phone, I will be in here looking to root it, and get rid of all this verizon bloat...

This was my big concern... I only get 5gb/mo... But... I never used more than 4 w sprint (mostly cuz their network is slow slow its almost impossible). so I will be keeping an eye on the data usage. From what the customer service rep said... verizon is changing their data rate plans, and tho no one really knows what they are changing, its pretty safe to say, they will be offering more data for the $... (I hope), and I will just change my data plan next month...
I have a Motorola photon from sprint which is almost the same as the razor. I'll say this about Motorola.... awesome phones right out of the box. Change the launcher to go launcher of launcher pro and the speed difference of the phone is night and day. Motorola does not want you unlocking the boot loader and running custom roms and to be honest there isn't any need to.
Root the phone through adb method and apply the water drop mod and download nebtop so you can use web top without a dock. I bought a $30 Bluetooth keyboard off amazon... its pretty nice when travel sling on the bike or just surfing the web in bed on the flat screen.
PS Google just bought Motorola so hopefully the development side of Motorola phones picks up soon.

[POLL] Call reception - better worse than Verizon S3?

Anyone here who switched from a Verizon S3? I work in an office with people who have the Verizon RAZR and Verizon iphone with no problems but my Verizon S3 says no signal and dies by 3PM. I've switched it out and it still sucks for reception but I like most other things about it.
I typically use 2000-3000 minutes a month so reception for voice is EXTREMELY important to me.
I either will move to the HTC DNA or One if the S4 has the same reception issues I had with my Samsung Galaxy and S3 on Verizon. If your S3 never gave you any reception problems that is wonderful for you but PLEASE feel free to start another thread saying how great your reception is or for you to tell me I must have gotten 4 defective phones and SIMs. This thread is aimed at helping me decide which phone to get.
To be clear, this isn't a thread about iphone or DNA or RAZR, Sprint S3, Tmobile S3 or ATT S3 reception or how you never had reception issues on your S3. This survey is specifically targeted to find out if people who had reception issues with the S3 got any relief with the S4.
Please do not check "yes this is a question" as all Qs get moved to Q&A. If you post a poll put POLL in the title instead.

From what I have read, the CDMA S3 had a poor CDMA chip/radio so that's why lot of them have issues on Verizon/sprint. If the Sprint S4 is any thing like the verizon one voice/CDMA wise then it should be way better than the S3 and even better than the ONE.
I know you said this wasn't about the RAZR, but I have had two of them and both of them had very bad signal issues holding 4G. The first one even had a hard time holding 3G or any thing for that matter. I got a S3 from Verizon for free in the end due to the issues just getting worse and worse along with Flash player not working on update 4.0.4 even though Flash player should work just fine on ICS.

I'm much much much more concerned about call reception than 4G. I work with someone who has the Verizon razr and they never have reception issues at the office. I can't make or receive calls on my Verizon S3 at the office.

I had terrible S3 reception. The DNA has a solid Radio.
I'm hoping the S4 has a really good one too, or else, i'm sending mine back, the only thing that sucks with the dna is theres no root, and theres no way of s-offing it currently.
I am curious as well as samsung has a history with bad radios and hoping they finalyl figured it out, otherwise I will have to pass.

The DNA is a sweet phone. I came VERY close to buying one, but the lack of SD card slot (and only 16G) and non-removable turned me off. Other than that a very sweet phone!

I was close to getting the DNA as well but Sense seems a little sluggish on it compared to wiz and the battery was a bit underpowered for my needs. I can be on the phone with a client or tech support for hours at a time. There are rumors the One will have a larger screen on Verizon which should cover my issues.
If anyone has the Verizon S3 and the Verizon S4 it might be helpful if you showed network db side by side in an area with no reception or bad reception on the S3.
I just received my S4 today, hoping like hell that the reception was better than my S3. I travel A LOT and know every area in my 200+mile drive, that I have reception issues in. I haven't been able to use my S3 in my house, since I moved here 2 months ago; I believe its a combination of the metal roof and ****y phone, so I upgraded one of my lines to the S4.
I am finally able to walk thru every part of my house and talk without any.issues. I used to have no service in my kitchen, now I have 2 bars with crystal clear reception. I'll know tomorrow if its fixed the issues in the other areas I have issues in, but for now I'm excited.
I did active my old droidX a week ago to see if I could use it in the areas I always have problms, and I could, which means its the ****ty S3.
One other thing to note is the battery life. I've read that its horrible etc: I charged my phone to 100% before activation and I'm still running with 51%, 6 hours later and I've uploaded everything and been playing with the new features the whole night. I did have a 43 minutes call in there as well, so the battery life seems extremely compatible with my S3. I also ordered 2 spares with a charger from Amazon and I'll see how they stack up with the factory battery over the next few days. I'm a phone abuser for work; 5000+ text, 3000+ minutes and probably 10,000+ emails a month, so it will be put thru the paces for certain. I'll update my overall impression with the reception tomorrow night.
Sorry, I know this was long but I wanted to tell how I'll be comparing and already have been, to show a major improvement so far.

THanks! This is exactly the sort of info that is helpful. Someone who has an S3 that can't work in some areas and then using an S4 in those same spots.

You Sir, Have Given Me hope.
You guys have all given me hope. When I read the op, I seriously thought I wrote it or my wife did. I too have problems using my s3 at work after switching from a Droid Razr to the s3. Everyone at work has an iPhone and have no issues with making calls.
Based on everyone's input, I'm almost willing to try an s4 out before I'm forced to switch to an iPhone 5 (those are the only options for work this time around).

i get my s4 later today, ill get some screens of the network db side by side and post to see what my results are. Ill have 2 s3s and a s4 so I can see them all side by side. I have a few places on my way to my house the s3 wont pick up so we will see how the s4 does

I'm with you 110% Boe. For those of us who have bad reception issues with the S3 it can be a tough road getting people who are happy with their S3, to understand exactly how irritating it is to have a phone that does a lot very well, but can NEVER be trusted as a telephone. I am really looking forward to seeing the responses in this thread. I'm on Verizon.

Yeah for some reason they insist on posting things like I never have problems with my S3 (perhaps they never use it as a phone) or you must have gotten a defective one (all 4 times I replaced my phones and sims at difference Verizon stores throughout the country - amazingly bad luck).
i have a galaxy nexus and can say without a doubt that the s4 radios are better by far. way better. i keep a 4g signal everywhere my galaxy nexus would drop to 3g or 1x, matter of fact i have yet to lose 4g anywhere but in an elevator.
gps locks are also way faster.
very impressive.

I picked up the s4 this morning. Reception so far OK. I'm in the office where I frequently get no signal. For whatever reason today my S3 and S4 are getting signal. However, both are reading about 100db on average - no real difference between the two so i'm as yet, unconvinced this is an improvement over the S3. I'll be going to yet another place I frequently can't make calls on my S3 later today and we'll see how the S4 does. Clouds, lack of clouds etc can all impact reception so I'll need more testing to know anything regarding this phone's reception.'
Foxfi doesn't seem to work on the S4 but does on my S3 so I'll have to find another sharing program if I decide to keep this phone.
