and hopefully there is a way to solder a microsd reader in there. i hope that SOC has dedicated pins for it.

However, the very last sentence at the end of the teardown is, "The Nexus 10 display and digitizer are fused together, so that is where the take apart ends." The digitizer seems to me one of the most important repairables.

That's one big ass battery.

Pretty much all high-end screens and capacitive digitizers are fused together these days, it's the process of choice to keep thickness AND glare down, needs less backlight power, gives better color reproduction, contrast and viewing angles, and it cuts weight a bit.
TL;DR The days of two-piece displays and digitisers are almost gone.

- Hmm, I don't see where the graphics chip is on the motherboard? The Exynos chip is pretty obvious, but I didn't see anything really labeling the graphics.
- Do the 2 heat shields serve to keep heat around those chips, or to disperse heat among a larger area? Does the heat shields come in-contact with the chips, or does it just hover above them slightly? If it's just hovering; we could possibly use some thermal pads to help with cooling if it becomes an issue at some point with overclocking maybe

Ah, yea your probably right

Has anyone actually torn apart their N10 yet? I wanted to know if it was at all possible to separate the back from the screen, without a suction cup (I don't have one of those anywhere)

Ha ha, yeah it would be terribly inefficient to have a seperate chip for both the CPU and gpu .

Look any custom light bleed fixes aren't possible. Bummer.
:xda on sprint g-nex:

Cant quite tell by looking at the pictures, but it looks like pins 3 and 5 on the pogo are likely used for charging the device....I wish someone would investigate this....I would, but I won't have full access to mine until Christmas...I just got to open it to make sure I didn't have light bleed...I had just a little in the bottom right corner, no big deal.
At any rate...why hasn't anyone tried to figure out the pogo pins yet? Just a lot of hand wringing and naval gazing so far...

Antenna tests on T-Mobile

I disassembled my I717 and T989 to determine if I could find any major differences in the antennas. I managed to connect the coax lead from the base antenna on the I717 to the PCB leading to the corresponding antenna on the T989, but it didn't improve upload performance. I think its the receive antenna.
There is 4 antennas from what I can see, the two top side antennas are probably for transmit, the rear door one is the GPS patch antenna, and the base one in the speaker module is probably for receive. I'm just deducing this from the fact that the two antennas I think are transmit are very close to the large IC chips, and you'd want to minimize signal loss by keeping things close.
Luckily the unit is easy to split apart. If I find that a simple antenna mod improves upload performance then I feel it would be an mod that most folks could accomplish themselves.
Perhaps someone has a service manual that could be of help?

Hey roto,
I think that antenna at the base is the one for uplink. Very weird thing ... when I hold the phone in landscape with the volume rocker up or with the phone upside down my upload speeds take off. When I hold the phone right side up with my hands covering the base, my upload speeds diminish. Wonder if there is a way to easily move that antenna ...

i just redid my "tinfoil antenna but made it longer up the length from the S-Pen to the "white sticker" I gained a full bar of reception. as to up/down speeds no real difference as my carrier is poop.

I have also covered the bottom section below the battery, leaving a hole for the speaker of course

External Antenna, need patch cable info

So the story goes we were in northern Maine on a fishing trip with no signal. I would like to make an external Cantenna, but need the correct patch cable to go from the phone to the cantenna. I don't care what connector is on the other end as I will source the correct connector based on the patch cable. Anyone know what spec the external antenna port is on our phone?
ps I know where the port is, just don't know what it's technical name is.

Be careful!!!
I've read that those ports on the back of the phone are used by Samsung for testing purposes. Be careful when tinkering with those as you might permanently disconnect the internal antenna and ruin your phone. I was interested in making an external for my old Epic 4G Touch and decided not to after what I'd read about using those ports. Here's a thread with some info for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1484314
If you are successful in joining a Cantenna to one of those ports, let me how you did it.
Nice dinner there.

Saw the exact same problem back with the captivate, poor guy trashed his phone, since the antenna connector never reset; apparently it is just the way Samsung handles antennas in their phones. There is a powered amplifier on the market that works without a direct wired connection, if I remember it will give you..... maybe 20db (guessing from a suspect memory) ... I could probably find the link, if you don't already have it.

An engineer friend made a reflector that focuses the signal at his cell phone. I think he used a stainless steel bowl with a hole in the bottom so it was more a funnel than a reflector. You need to know where the cell tower is so you can point the bowl, though.

Sounds like a good idea, but not sure it will work where we are. Lots of trees in the way. It sucks that Samsung would not use the external antenna port the same way as everyone else. I'll contact sammy and see what's up.

Okay, this might help you, take a look at this little well priced tech marvel:
http://bestcelldist.com/samsung_galaxy_note_lte_widepatch.html
Pros ::::::It is just the coupling, This inductive coupling will tie into any type antenna system you might like. You can specify any end connector when you order ..
It is only $30 bucks. I know it is not as economical as a simple connector but an could turn out to be an excellent alternative if it turns out you can't mate a physical connector.
Cons::::::There is Rf loss without the physical attachment, around 40% , though with the right antenna/booster you could easily be sending fish picks to jealous friends back home....
By the way,the link below still sells the connector that will trash a Samsung Captivate, They do warn that attaching an external antenna "might" damage your phone in "rare" circumstances......they sell it for about $12, nice profit on some suckers $100 dollar loss.... some things never change, eh...... Let the Buyer Beware.

Official response from Samsung Support on G+:
Hi Travis! Unfortunately, we don't have any support information concerning this as we don't support 3rd party extermal antennas. Please reach out to the manufacturer for further information. Thanks!
No surprise really
I will keep the inductive version in mind. I will also update the post with any other info I find. Going to try an contact Cyanogen as his wife has a GNote and he works for Samsung.

I've contacted a couple of seemingly legit manufactures as I still have an old Wilson's antenna that worked incredibly well in the middle of a great lake on a sail boat with an old Nokia phone about 10 years ago.
I would love to find a connector to the samsung note sgh i717 ...
thanks for posting what you know. Wish Samsung would have the nuts to look into it and provide the community some info with a harsh disclaimer to avoid dealing with warranties rather than say nothing.
If you find anything else out, please post!

Not sure if the Nexus 10's size will work for you? Test drive a cut-out model!

Basically, this involves you making some kind of cut-out with exactly (or as close as possible) the same measurements as the Nexus 10 itself. A decent way of testing out the form-factor of such a device, whenever you can't get access to such a device, or if you want to try it out before purchase.
Materials possibly needed:
- Cardboard (or paper, or whatever you want to construct the decoy tablet with)
- Ruler (at least 1 ft will do fine)
- Marker (or something to mark off measurements before cut-out)
- Scissors (or something sharp)
1. Get your material of choice. I used the bottom of some random cardboard box I had lying around:
{

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
2. Mark off the height of the device. In the case of the Nexus 10, 177.6mm = 6.992126 inches
3. Mark off the length of the device. In the case of the Nexus 10, 263.9mm = 10.389764 inches
4. Draw some guidelines to make cut-out possibly easier.
5. Cut it out!
6. Next you'll want to get the actual usable area of the screen marked. My math probably failed somewhere, but the screen size at a diagonal-angle is 10 inches. The length of the total tablet at a diagonal angle is 12.5 inches (or at least my model was). 12.5 - 10 = 2.5 inches. I then took 2.5 and divided it by 2 (to get the placement in accordance to both sides) which came to 1.25 inches. Therefore, I put the screen 1.25 inches from the edge of the model. Not 100% sure if my math here was correct though, so if at all in doubt, may just want to measure the points yourself And also, my measurements were a bit sloppy here since 2 sides appear somewhat uneven
7. Draw some guidelines for the usable screen area and add whatever other details you want.
Now try walking around your house or wherever you want with the mock-tablet and see how it fares for you. See if swiping the cut-out feels good or not, see if you can hold it well while laying down on a couch or bed. Test if it will sit on your table, do whatever you would might normally do with the tablet, and just see if it generally works or not.
Not sure if you'd want to go out in public trying such a model though, so you might have to just get a general idea for that Also this would probably just work for... any device you'd want it to, just have to know the measurements for it
I found that I sort of like how the Nexus 10 feels. Could probably use it around the house without too much trouble at all, and even works out nicely while laying down.
As for simulating the weight; the Nexus 10 weighs 603 grams, or 1.32 pounds. Not really sure how you would simulate the weight and keep the form-factor of the cut-out, but I'm sure something creative can be thought up
I drew light bleed and a dead pixel on my cardboard cutout. I need to make a replacement .

To simulate weight you could always tape a ziplock bag full some washers or change to the back. I did a quick calculation and it'd take ~100 quarters, so that's why I suggest just filling a bag with some weight. It might not be the best for getting a form feel, but probably the quickest/easiest way to simulate weight.

At least you don't have to open any flaps or connect any wires.
What's the difference between placing your tablet on a "wireless" charging pad or in a cradle anyway?
A cradle looks much nicer and neater. Inductive charging wastes a part of the energy, generates more heat and is generally slower.

What's the difference between placing your tablet on a "wireless" charging pad or in a cradle anyway?
A cradle looks much nicer and neater. Inductive charging wastes a part of the energy, generates more heat and is generally slower.

With wireless charger you may use any case, with dock only original one or of the same construction (type). Energy waste is not substantial in this case, a lot of people plug in tablet for a charge overnight, it doesn't matter that it will take 1 hour more, because you can partially compensate it by using more powerfull charger (e.g. from Ipad or samsung 2,1A work well) instead of original 1,5A which chargers forever even in craddle).

About Samsung HDMI MHL adapter

I got it today and works brilliant. However even small movement of the adapter makes noise like something is shaking inside. Can you tell me if your adapters do the same crackling sound?

I did not have this issue when I had it. I had bought 2 different ones at different times, and used about 3-4 others while at work. All of them were solid as a rock. No moving parts or sound of moving parts.

Mine has this issue and it works and has worked for some time now.
I got mine back when I had an S4, so it's been working for over 6 months
Can you post which one you got?

I got mine off ebay so the listing is gone by now but the description was: MHL 2.0 AV HDMI HDTV Adapter Cable ET-H10FAUWEGWW
Works without having to plug in an external power source. Tested on Galaxy S3, S4, Note 3.
Though when I used it on the S3 I did plug the power source in because we were streaming a really long movie and the phone wasn't charged fully.
Jep I bought that one too. Will arrive this week or next week. I'll let you know how it worked out for me. I really need this badly

I don't have any 1080p content. I did play 720p without any issues
I need to get one of thoses...
I bought one over the Christmas break, and turned out it was fake, so I sent it back and they sent me a real one. Before returning the fake one I took some comparison pictures side-by-side, and can tell you exactly what it should look like. The real one is very sturdy compared to the fake one.
What do you mean by sturdy? Can you a bit more clear?

when you squeeze the body of the device, the plastic gives a little bit. When you squeeze the real one, it does not give. This is probably because it actually has the proper components within, whereas the fake one seems to be missing something inside.

Can you post up the pics? I'd like to see which one mine looks like (I'm sure it's the fake one considering the price I paid).

Yes I'll be able to do that, once I get to my home computer as I'm away from home as of the moment. Tomorrow afternoon I will post them up.
Would be great since mine is underway. So I can compare both

In this one the real one is one the left, and you may notice how to corners on the device are more defined than the fake one, regarding the outside of it and the HDMI female plug.
On top is the real one, and it looks like it has a more yellowish hue to the white compared to the fake one.
Here the real one is on the bottom, and you can tell the MHL label is a little lighter of a shade of grey. The metal male plug is also different, with the real one having a little smoother look to it and where the metal interlocks in the middle it seems to be in a different style in the fake one.
On the right is the fake one. It looks like the connector's edges are more defined and has two ridges along the bottom, whereas the fake one it seems there are none.
Let me know if you guys want more pics, I took plenty just in case.
Mine is genuine because its from Amazon directly. But the crackling noise when you shake it is a bit concerning

What kind of power source? Also, did that choke on the adapter come with it, or did you add that yourself?
Thanks,
--Matthew
If you mean by choke the cable no it was not included. The power source is included in the Mhl adapter
