Hey guys, newbie here and I got some questions for y'all.
I am a longtime iPhone user, thinking about switching over to the Vibrant. I'm used to the jailbreaking/unlocking of the iphone...are similar things able to be done to the Vibrant?

Ok a few things.
Yes, you can root the vibrant and install custom roms.
On the iPhone you can install hacked apps, meaning you don't pay for them, techinically you can do the same on an Android phone by just having the apk file, however this is frowned upon because that is stealing. Why not just pay for the app? Apps are cheap on Android.
If you are a current iPhone user and if you purchase the Vibrant, YOU WILL BE UNHAPPY. I suggest you wait for the iPhone 5 which will be released in June, or wait for the dual core Android phones coming out. Do not get the original Vibrant.
Ps...the Vibrant 4G is going to be released soon. You can also get the Nexus S at best buy.
btw coming to xda and saying you don't pay for apps and you steal them was not a wise idea.

Yes, you can "jailbreak", for Android it is called root, and in turn you can install custom ROMs, Kernels, and for the Vibrant "modems" (radio's on other phones). As for "free" apps, Android, unlike iOS, has TONS of free apps already. Developers tend to offer a free and paid version, main difference is the free version has ads in it. Developers actually make more money off the ad revenue (typically) than the paid versions. There are still apps that are only paid, or the full version are paid only, and to be very honest trying to get those for free is BS in my opinion, especially given the prices.
This site is FULL of all the info you need to root any Android phone and start loading custom ROMs. It is very addictive, and compared to the iPhone, it is like living in America versus living in China in terms of freedom to do what you want. In China (iPhone) you are limited in your ways, and can do as you please to an extent. Where as in America (Android) you are free to do as you please, but have a great infrastructure to help guide you and aid you in such venturers.

I am not on AT&T, I am on T-Mobile. I have had a 3G for the last 2 years, but with the new ios4.3 comes out, it will not have an update for the 3G, they are getting fazed out. So I'm moving away from the iphone for a while, may get a 4 down the road.
I understand cracked apps are illegal, a TMO CSR pointed me to this website, so if cracked apps aren't talked about here fine, I didn't know. I was just going where I was told by Tmobile to get information regarding it. Simple as that.
I have a free 2 year upgrade at TMobile right now, so I'm looking between the Vibrant and the MyTouch 4G. Right now I'm using a Blackberry Bold 9780.

Warez is not just frowned upon, but is grounds for banishment on XDA, and actually every single decent Android site. Explaining how to get it, where to get it, or giving it out is a major no no, and asking (especially after being told) is a no no as well.
This isn't iOS where everything costs money, this is Android where you can literally get 95% of apps for free from the market. There is no need to steal, not that there is on iOS (I have an iPad, love it, and have paid for my fair share of apps even though it is jailbroken).
Lastly, if that is your only desire in a phone, then just don't get one. If all you want to do is use your phone to steal, then you don't deserve to have a phone.

Welcome to XDA! I came to the Vibrant from the iPhone 3G and I love it, as one has said you can steal apps but no one here will help you with that, also apps seem to generally cheaper on android than they are on iOS.
Depending on what you are looking for you may be happier where your currently have. Android's market is growing quiet well but I feel that it currently doesn't match the iOS market when it comes to games, so if games are your thing I would stay away (but we do have great emulators!) Many things may have changed in iOS since I used it last back in 3.0 something another.
Now few things I love personally love about android! Google Voice is easily used, Ive been using it for about 2 years now and haven't given out my real number since, its the best! Google maps is amazing, always getting updates haven't used a standalone gps since. You can customize the desktop however you feel please (don't need winterboard and everything, its just a ton easier). Swype is pure amazing, I could never go back to normal texting after getting use to it, super fast! And finally googles voice integration, you can talk and have it type what is said, you can have it search for you or even open your google maps and have it set your navigation!
As I'm sure you've noticed by now the forum has a lot of idiots who have nothing to add to the community except their derogatory remarks, sadly they don't seem to ever go away do they?

Rooting does what jail breaking did for the iphone. Allows you to do what you normally couldn't. Its also really easy to do, there are a few different things you can use but they all get the same thing done.
When you root you can install new rom's like a 2.3 rom if you wish. There developers who change them how they wish and then share them with the community, you can find them in Vibrant Android Development part of the forums. You can also download new kernels that will allow you to overclock your phone or even underclock if you wish.
In the android market there are some apps that also require you to root your phone to use them. One such app is Titanium Backup, it will back all the apps and stuff you have downloaded so if you install a new rom or lose your phone or something you can easily reinstall everything.
Basically rooting fully opens up your phone, allowing anything.
I just got my Nook Tablet 2 days ago and am very frustrated by the lack of instruction that I am finding on the internet about using this.
I know how to buy books and to change settings. I have my gmail set up but I cannot figure out the internet portion of this. For some reason the facebook login page was made to be my homepage and I have tried to change it many times....didn't work through settings. Also, while in facebook, I do not see "chat" or who is currently online. Am I doing something wrong? I did not see fb as an app in the app store.
I also have been looking at your lists of apps that everyone has added to their NT. Again, I am frustrated because I do not know what any of you are talking about. I am no techie!
Please help me out here or this thing is going back.

If you go over to the B&N website and click on support for the Nook Tablet, you will get links to a dedicated 200 page user manual in pdf. Hopefully that might answer some of your questions.
I have read the manual and it does not give specifics for fb.
I don't think chat is an option with the mobile fb site. Also, the fb app is not available through the market on the nook. There is a fb apk file in the "must have apps" thread here, but not sure if it has chat either.
One thing Barnes and Noble has over Amazon is an actual store.
If you take your NT to the store, someone there should be able to help you set it up the way you want.
In your case specifically, I would recommend ignoring postings about side loading and rooting until you have quite a bit of experience using the stock Nook. You will avoid a lot of frustration that way.
The Alps listed in the "must have" are pretty easy to install and use. Just go to that page from the browser on your nt and click on the link(s). You'll see a little arrow in your notification area, click that and choose the package installer. At some point you'll need to check to OK installing non-market apps. Once you've installed the apps, you can get to them by seaching from the nooks search function. I would recommed installing the Amazon market and buying wave launcher. It will let you access up to 12 apps by swiping a finger, and you can also access all your apps through an app drawer that way too.

I think the OP has received several helpful replies to their problem.
As for the forum itself, I'm new and my experience has been that each of my polite inquiries have received responses, including help side-loading, rooting, and issues with default ringtones.
Perhaps insulting those who are in no hurry to get on Skype and talk to someone they've never met, is a questionable approach. Just a thought.

"Meet" is probably the wrong word. In this sense it would be seeing a number of posts from a user to get a feel for how they deal with others, how knowledgable they are, etc.
You have no doubt seen posts from people which gave you a strong desire to have no interaction with them at all. That kind of thing.
In the very short time I've been watching these forums I've already seen several people jump in with an extremely demanding attitude. Like somehow they're entitled to everyone's immediate help.
Where does that come from? This isn't a Barnes & Noble site. These people aren't paid by B&N. Coming in demanding help seems like the wrong tack to take. If someone is looking to rant about the device they'd probably be more successful going into a B&N store.
Similarly, if you want detailed help on formatting epubs then perhaps a reader-specific forum might be more useful. Something like the Calibre forums maybe. Yes, the Nook Tablet is a reader but the vast majority of the posts here gear towards to the Android tablet side of the device--not the e-reader side.

Dude, maybe people don't want to take time out of their day to be your personal nook/android tutor when literally every single person has figured **** out themselves by either using the forum search function or using Google. If you used your time to do research instead of writing long rambling posts, you would already be way ahead of where you are now regarding knowledge. In regards to the op... he did seem to come into a technical forum to attemp to figure out very basic usage information. Read a few threads here and im sure youll pick up some things. I had to google a lot of acronyms and things last week to get up to speed. Kexec, cwm, etc. You'll pick it up. Just keep reading!
I think this has been one off the nicer forums on here, and and I'm proud to be a part of it.
In general augustusbot is 100% correct. This is a forum for modding not for basic usage, the problem though is in general there is no good manual for any android device. The fact that Barnes and Noble has physical stores is great, it is their job to show you how to use your device.

jdubr is just being polite. Nobody wants to talk to you because you behave like a b**t on this forum. The internet is a place full of normal people, but it has its fair share of we****s/a*****es. And we know very little about a person other than what we can discern from their online behaviour. From your prior posts, I personally find you a "***** ******** ******". And I believe most other people would feel the same way. That's why no one wants to talk to you. Try cooling off, then going through your previous posts and looking at them objectively. See if this happens in real life, or in other forums/personal interactions.
It's well and good saying you are well-liked. But based on the evidence we see, it seems to be the opposite. Nobody owes you information, or help. Anything anyone provides here is a gift, yet you demand it and complain when you don't get it.
It's true that information on forums isn't always very organised. But that's just the way they function. There ARE efforts to make it neater. But sometimes the developers/etc are too busy trying to figure out higher level problems to neaten up their work for a beginner to follow. In any case, they don't owe it to you, me, or anyone else.
I'm sure the developers would be more than happy to have people put up tutorial videos for them. But you have to ask nicely, and put in your own effort as well. The effort taken to develop/program/code is immense. To make things fair, how about putting in some of your own effort rather than adding to their load by asking them to simplify/explain everything in a beginner friendly manner?
To the OP, Joyce, there are various FB chat programs on the Android Market, you can try them instead of the official FB app. Also, there is some information on the Android Development Subforum about changing your screen dpi to 160, which may allow you to see the normal FB app on market. But that aspect is not fully firmed up yet, so you might want to wait a week or two till they have it stable.
As for "must have" apps, if you are new to Android, try downloading some of them which sound good, and try them for yourself. What others find good, may not work well for you. And part of the fun is exploring the Market to find apps that fit your purposes well, even if they aren't particularly popular. Try reading the descriptions and reviews on the Market for a quick feel of how the app works.

I'm a fellow Nexus 10 owner. I love my device, but I'm a bit tired of facing applications that are low-resolution and unoptimized for the incredible display we have on the Nexus 10. Even tablet-optimized apps are lacking. Aren't you frustrated? Hence, I thought we could do something about it as a community.
Which is the purpose of this thread!
Here's how it will work. This first post will serve as a compilation of all the petitions made to any and all developers to optimize their applications for tablets, and also the Nexus 10's display. Any subsequent posts in this thread shall be for petition requests and discussion, which I will personally put together and post up to the petition site being used for this purpose (Care2 as of this thread's posting). I will then add a direct link to that petition to this thread, sorted by category. Feel free to make any suggestions or to criticize! I will also start us off with a petition I have already created myself: to the developers of the Bloons TD series of games, Ninja Kiwi.
I'll try to keep things simple! Keep on topic, please, and try your best to sign each and every petition. Its the only way we'll be able to actually push developers to optimize their applications for tablets like ours! So, without further ado, let us begin!

This is likely Google's job, not ours. In any event, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are three that immediately spring to mind. Not because they are low resolution -- not sure what you mean there -- but because the layouts are so clearly designed for smaller screens. I shouldn't have to opt for Friendcaster, Tabstagram, and Plume.

No, it's the app devs job. The point of this is to show them that there is a need for this to be done by enough of their user base to merit the work hours it will take them to implement it. What they don't know ends up hurting us. It is actually an excellent idea.
A dedicated Facebook app should be a priority. My mate has an iPad and I found myself looking longingly at the sickness of the dedicated app. Something needs to be done to put a stop to this sick perversion!

Its the job of the application developers to get out proper apps. Google has done TONS of work already. Now we need to show these guys that we, the users, actually care about proper tablet applications, and that it is worth the investment.
Thats why I created this thread - if we don't do something about it, no-one will! I'm going to try to get as many signatures as possible, and I'm going to spread this thread across multiple forums if necessary. AndroidTablets.net springs to mind.

Like previously said all those social apps need optimization for sure. And the xda app needs optimization. I think there's an HD version but it costs money

You'll excuse me if I seem overly cynical about this. I used to be a BlackBerry user. Well over two years ago, some folks on Crackberry launched a campaign to bombard Reid Hastings, the president of Netflix, with email to get Netflix on the BlackBerry platform (the OS 6 devices like the Torch had then fairly recently come out). If you are familiar with Crackberry, you know that they are a rabid, fanatical horde. Nothing happened. Then came the petitions -- change.org and the like. They are still going on more than two years plus later, and despite the fact that BlackBerry now has quite decent phones and a decent OS in BB10, there is still no Netflix on the platform.
EDIT: Holy! I already have 4 signatures for Facebook on Android Tablets and I haven't even posted it anywhere yet! That shows something.

I think your points make sense, but they aren't a valid reason really to cause Netflix to develop for BB10. The marketshare simply isn't there.
With Android, however, the market has shown that it is a valid platform (and I hate to say that as if it was an option - c'mon. ANDROID IS AWESOME! ); it makes sense for them to update, and it only helps us out. We need to show them that we actually CARE. If they understand that, then they will update for us without question. If they have any business sense, that is.
Same with BB10 (which is, quite frankly, a very nice OS - it even has NFC Beaming support between BB and Android devices). If they had the market AND Crackberry screaming like it was/is, they would get a proper app quite quickly.
This deserved a quick update post: the petitions for Facebook and Instagram are now online. Facebook already has a few votes!

I think your points make sense, but they aren't a valid reason really to cause Netflix to develop for BB10. The marketshare simply isn't there.
With Android, however, the market has shown that it is a valid platform (and I hate to say that as if it was an option - c'mon. ANDROID IS AWESOME! ); it makes sense for them to update, and it only helps us out. We need to show them that we actually CARE. If they understand that, then they will update for us without question. If they have any business sense, that is.
Same with BB10 (which is, quite frankly, a very nice OS - it even has NFC Beaming support between BB and Android devices). If they had the market AND Crackberry screaming like it was/is, they would get a proper app quite quickly.

BB's problem is definitely rooted in market share, something that Android in general obviously has no problem with. But the numbers dwindle considerably when you're talking about Android tablet market share, and then on top of that, you've got to consider how many Android tablet users really care that there are some apps that are just scaled up phone versions. Apple cared enough to do something about it -- remember that was one of the criticisms of the first iPad, i.e., that it seemed just like a oversized iPod. Google has not been responsive on this front (nor on others for that matter).
Anyway, I don't want to discourage anyone, so have at it.

Don't worry, you're not discouraging (me, at least).
Android Tablet market share has been steadily on the rise - in fact, it rivals the iPad. According to many statistics, they are slated to pass (if they have not already) Apple devices in tablet market share by the 3rd quarter. I listed 3 (or 4?) links in all of the petitions.
As for Google, they have been doing a great job lately. They added dedicated tablet sections to Google Play, and have been pushing developers to adhere to the guidelines constantly. I say keep up that pressure!

why can't i get a new phone, install supersu from the play store, go to dev options or security, and enable root and point to supersu to handle it?
no security holes needed to get root and far less hassle for us end users to get to do what we want with our phones

well...what I can see is that the general public don't need or care for these functions. And they are quite good security locks. The ones who don't know what these functions are will not attempt to unlock the bootloader etc etc.
If for example these functions are visible in the settings menu and someone who just got their device scrolling the menus and finds this interesting button.
hmm..It says "root"? Beneath is another button says "unlock bootloader".
WOOW! Lets press the buttons and see what happens!!! :laugh::laugh:
And somehow the user bricked the device because the person didn't have any knowledge of what was going on.
There is probably more to it like warranty questions.
but it wouldn't be visible - like on this phone you had to know where to go to enable dev options so an average user wouldn't see it at all.

With that said, i think every single individual at XDA would love to have a pre-rooted device, or simply have (like you say) a toggle in the developer settings or something, but we all know how stupid people are, so i understand why it's not an option.
I would rather have a simple procedure like the Nexus' have where you have to know what you're about to do, and you can do it. If you do that, you probably know what root means, and you won't try to delete the system folder.

I have to agree with the OP though. Because even Linux itself comes with su. Windows comes with Administrator mode. So it shouldn't be a problem to provide root into the system even though majority of people doesn't know what are they doing. If something goes wrong, just recommend them to flash again (in Windows term, format and fresh install) even then google already provides contact backup so it shouldn't take a long time. Unlocking the bootloader on the other hand..

Sure, but does your mom or sister use Linux, or even a terminal/CMD? No they do not. Linux is a "niche" OS, and the people that uses it knows what it is and what it does. Geeks. Being a Windows admin is not nearly as dangerous as having root in Android or Linux. You can destroy the whole system by deleting one file. And flashing and formatting is something few people do. There's a reason why I hate it when friends and family start messing around with their devices, because I know that I'll have to either take a look at the damn thing or reformat it next week.
People are morons when it comes to technology. WE are a special group of people that spend A LOT of time with these things, so it's natural that we want it all. Regular people on the other hand want to check Facebook and use Spotify. Throw the whole kitchen sink into the OS and people will get confused and get an iPhone, or simply stop using it for what it is or could be. Remember that we are the minority here. Android is a mainstream OS that is meant for regular people and should be simple to use, but advanced under the hood (so people like us can play with it).
If you take a closer look at KitKat, you'll notice that Google have made some tiny changes, like the arrow on the lock screen that tells you that if you drag the arrow up, you'll open Google Now. Also notice the camera icon on the lock screen. Tap it and it'll move a little - like a hint for people that you can slide it to open the camera. Google understands that people need guidance and not hidden shortcuts and more gestures. We may know about all the features and easter eggs, but that's because we're actively looking for them. People in general are not.
My point is, people don't care. WE, the geeks are the minority and not the main group of people OEM's are thinking about when they make devices. We, the geeks already have devices that are targeted at us and it's called "Nexus".

But if people really don't care, why Microsoft and Linux devs give such Administrator access to their 'Home edition' software? We bought the device and the ROM so why such restriction compared to a casual desktop solution? Following Google's logic to make it easy user friendly as it is, just put it in hidden place like developer option and boom problem solved. No casual user would ever know about tapping the Android build number continuously. Plus with a revised policy for warranty will be nice, for example, it will be void if you ever unlocked the bootloader of the device, because imho, that is the lifeline nowadays to guarantee that your device is still recoverable with some flashing. Casual super user activity shouldn't be closed completely i'd say (i.e Titanium backup anyone?).

Windows allows users to do some stuff but the worst thing you could do is mess it up so bad you have to do a clean install. There might not be a link from changing something in windows to completely screw up BIOS.
Now for rooting on Android, the average Joe hears about it, cool, let's press some buttons. Then some people mentions about kernels and radios, cool, let's flash some. Bam, phone gone. As some other have said, people will never cease to amaze you with their stupidity. So in Google and OEM's mind, it's best to make it as inaccessible as possible to avoid having some dumbass sue them for including something "potentially risky" in their devices.

Yes it is more risky but as i said in my post, warranty void IF the bootloader (ie the BIOS in desktop terms) is unlocked because even if you mess up the phone, there's always PC Companion fresh install if you still have locked bootloader, just like Windows fresh install, so therefore, Root/Admin priv should not be cut off completely from the system.

maybe but the nexus is an extremely limited device and not something i'd ever consider without google making major changes.
i don't see how something like this would mess up the average user either. i mean if you have a hidden dev options menu you have to unhide, then you have to download supersu and then enable root in dev options.
if someone does all that then they know what they're getting into and must have read some guide to get there. no different to now really.
I think kit all depends on the people who set the first stone for these mobile operating systems. They obviously didn't think of them in the same sense as computer OS, so they just do things in certain ways. And I think from the way the market has evolved, Google hasn't found a reason to incorporate such features into Android because there's no real demand for it. You know how sometimes it doesn't take companies to do certain things, but they just don't do it. (like the freaking battery percentage on Android).

We have been through five phones -Samsung Galaxy, then Motorola, two internet providers two cell phone providers, made so many calls I have lost count. He uses Chromebook and a Motorola Droid phone. He has even hacked my old home phone, tv, you name it, he has tried to own it . Oh, I forgot-my home security and ring doorbells also. I can change an app permission and I can see him go right in and change it back. I am sure he lives close in the neighborhood How do I get rid of this horrible person?
He grays out permissions, default apps, etc., Which keeps me from being able to delete an app, or change someone being able to access in the background. He has confiscated our emails (Gmail), prevents us from sending or receiving ones he doesn't like. He uses email for email on the web, advertising, chat, and many other things. He listens to phone calls steals all photos, maps addresses to companies or people in contacts, uses maps for ?? Xxx an anyone help me, or at least tell me how to reverse graying out on apps? This has become unbearable! Thank you!

Lol! I cannot prove it, but the big gamers nextdoor moved in when this started happening. Their best friend is an experienced IT guy who only appears when I have gone in and changed things. In those days, new changes happen, such as Ring doorbells hacker, etc. Not blaming, but coincidence?

Why are you posting on XDA? If you are this convinced that someone has unauthorized access to your devices, you need to be talking to law enforcement. The best advice we can offer you is to change all your passwords immediately, enable 2 factor authentication, and if possible seek a restraining order. XDA is a smart device hacking and development community, not a private investigation service.

I didn't think you were a p.i. firm. Obviously, I am not tech savvy. A little kindness please? I simply want to know how to ungray grayed out app permissions. I have searched on my own and cannot find the answer. I have reported it to local police, state police, Motorola, Samsung, Verizon, Xfinity, metronet, on and on and on. No help from anyone. I don't have $2,500.00 to just put down a retainer for a p.i. I knew someone on this forum would know the answer I am searching for and might kindly tell me. Thank you.

Well, it can be hard to distinguish the difference between reasonable concern over privacy violations vs unwarranted paranoia, and you aren't the only one who's come to XDA with this type of story. Most of your assumptions are likely mistaken and can be simply explained by the nature of Android itself.
Remote intrusion of mobile devices is actually pretty rare. The most common ways bad actors get ahold of sensitive user information are: phishing, user-approved permissions on questionable apps such as TikTok, and "connected" social media accounts, where users allow websites and apps access to their social media profiles, or use their social media as a login.
Regardless, to the technical point of the matter, grayed out app permissions are not the result of hacking or surreptitious malfeasance, but rather the nature of the "rules" inherent to Android - you can't remove system apps or disable system-controlled permissions without root.
If you still think you have reasons for concern, this is my only suggestion:
Change your phone number
Immediately change all relevant passwords - minimum 10 characters, a mix of upper case, lower case, numbers, and special characters, do not reuse them
Enable 2 factor authentication on all accounts, ensuring your 2nd factor is something that you and only you have access to
Once done, sign out all devices signed into those accounts
Perform a factory reset on your device; even better, reflash factory firmware. Keep bootloader locked.
Do not use questionable apps
