[Q] Amazon Wireless to Upgrade - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I wasn't sure if I should have posted this in the Q&A or not but decided to throw it into the General section since it is not directly related to the Thunderbolt. Just wanted to hear from my fellow Thunderbolt owners.
So onto the question...
Has anyone upgraded their device through Amazon Wireless and what was their experience? Is there any benefit to do it through Amazon (except for the price of the device) vs Verizon?
I've always gone through the Verizon store but Amazon is offering a better price on the phone.

You will have two disconnect fees if you might cancel later on. One with Amazon and one with Verizon. Other than that, I would always upgrade someone other than Verizon.

I seriously considered Best Buy. Amazon's price was just too good though.

I upgraded through Letstalk.com, stumbled across a coupon code and got my thunderbolt $150, it was May and I believe they came out in March, Verizon was still selling them for $250 at the time.
was a good experience and they overnighted if for free.

There's a deal for getting the Droid DNA at 100$ via upgrade on Amazon right now (50 for new contract)

I'm assuming that getting an upgrade price through amazon still makes you lose unlimited data....

Yup.... any discounted upgrade price gets rid of unlimited.
2 options to keep it, first is 100% successful second not so much.
1) Buy at full price and stay off contract.
2) Add a new line and get a new phone with it, activate a dumb phone on the line instead and drop the data package, costs 10$ a month for the new line. This one might not work for long.

option 2

So if I understand 1. buy the new phone. 2. When it arrives from Amazon don't use that phone to activate but some other dumb phone and drop data after turning on? 3. Take old sim out of Thunderbolt and use that in new phone from Amazon.
So the requirement to get a smartphone plan from Amazon is not required to meet the terms of the new phone agreement to not get dinged by the cancel fees?

Just Pre-ordered EVO LTE from Wirefly (Upgrade Price) for $139
Was $119, sorry ladies & gents, deal was limited time only.
I started a thread in the OG EVO forum before this forum existed, thought I would pass this along to the XDA community.
I have used Wirefly before, I was very happy with them, so they will continue to get my business.

Just a friendly warning, the sale seems to be linked to specific zip codes. The link in the OP is setup for Garfield NJ, 07026 and the one I actually used was for Spring TX. If I updated the zip to my real zip code, the sale price is $149. Their system will also AUTOMATICALLY make your City, State, zip that of which the link takes you to.
Now I placed my order, realized the address issue and will contacted them tomorrow to modify my address. Not sure if that will effect the price I pay BUT one thing is for sure, its not going to cost me $217 either way.
I'll update here after I get the address corrected and confirm my price after. I figure I'll give it a day in their system to get to stick and then update the address.
I ordered yesterday for $149.99
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
It should be noted that there is a $37 activation fee from Sprint.
I changed the zipcode to mine (here in chicago) and it kept the $119.99 price. And yes, there is a $36 activation fee, but this is still cheaper than $150 if you figure in the $10 google wallet credit...
$119.99
$36
-$10
-----------
$145.99
Not bad at all. Not the $10 I paid for my evo a few days before christmas (price match + rebate), but flipping that, I should net under $50 or less for the whole thing.
EVO for $99.99 if you have Bank of America
Log into your bofa account and click on the add it up link. click on cell phone deals and bofa will credit your account $50 if you buy using their link. I tried getting the $119.99-$50 add it up, but it won't work.
One or the other.
By the way, to get the $119.99 deal, do a google search for "wirefly friends and family" and click on the first non-ad link.
So to summarize, $119.99 if you don't have bofa
or
$99.99 if you have bofa using the add it up link.

I wouldn't see why they would, if you are worried activate it on the line you used to upgrade, then switch the phone over to the line you want it on.

How will they know? You don't activate through them. You buy from them, tell them it's for the upgradable line, then when you get it, you activate through Sprint and have them so the switch. Wirefly is out of the picture once you have the device.

Why is there an activation charge?
How is this any different than buying a phone off of Craigslist and getting it activated?
Edit:
Does Sprint charge $37 activation even if you get it from them anyway?
(If so, then this isn't an issue. Gotta pay it either way, right?)

Because you need to "activate" it on the carrier and it's no different, you would be paying the same charge no matter where you get the phone. Now, the activation fee did double but that puts Sprint in line with the other carrier's activation/upgrade fees and adds more cash to the "fix the network" pot.
*Activation is $36

I had this same intention. I called Wirefly and they do NOT let you use another line's upgrade for your own (idk why thats what he said). You would have to swap the upgradeable line with yours like others have said. Part of the reason is because their policy is to activate it themselves (I asked them if they could hold off on the activation, the guy said no) so its running by the time it gets in your hands

This doesn't entirely make sense. If you're upgrading, that would mean your existing device stops functioning when they activate the new one. This is obviously not acceptable. I'm quite confident you actually have to call in and activate it once you receive the device. THEN your old device stops functioning. Now if you're buying a new line of service then it may arrive activated (though past purchases from amazon for tmobile did require activation AFTER receipt of device).
ymmv.
Wirefly has a ad on its front Page saying free activation wheb adding a line or doing a new activation.
Food for thought to make it a even better deal...

what a colossal pain in the balls.. okay so i would just go to verizon store and say "hey i need a new SIM card for my phone" what do i tell them is my reason?
lol this is the first step... the only two upgrades on my plan are for two phones that dont have a data plan at all... we would have to add the data plan on there then cancel it once we activate the old one? yeah there's no way he will go for that...
so what if i get the phone without a contract, activate it on somebody else's line, (somebody who already has the new data plan) and then do the sim card thing?
sorry for typing so much.. i want this phone lol

I contacted Best Buy (888#) and requested the $50 credit. I purchased my LG E970on 3/2/12 for $99 and was in the 15 day Price Match by one day. The rep put me on hold, came back, took down my info and said that I would get a call back letting me know the status of my credit. I was concerned that I would not hear back from BB and he said that I would get a return call within 48 hours. Needless to say, no call back so I called back and was told that BB no longer offers the Price Match on contracted cell phone as of 3/2/12. Great. I went back and read the small print details and yup, it does say that. Argh.
Going to go into store tomorrow and talk to a manager and push for the $50.00 Heck for $50.00 I would have returned the darn thing and bought it again. I can play their game too. I will add that I did not receive a call back as promised.

Interesting, I called AT&T to see about getting an early upgrade (March instead of May). I was told that they could only do 30 days early. My brother had a similar convo with them about a year ago. Seems like it's luck of the draw on who you actually get on the call.

[Q] My phone upgrades are available, what are my options?

I'm on Verizon obviously and I was lucky enough (at the time) to have been grandfathered into that 1400 minute plan with unlimited data. We have two phones, HTC Rezound(mine) and a Motorola DX2(wife), both do for upgrades in August. I'm probably going to wait until some new phones come out, nothing I see entices me right now.
Down to the point, how can we upgrade without losing our unlimited data? What are our options, any way to get around this? My wife is dying for a new phone, here DX2 is 2 years old and falling apart plus I'd love to get away from HTC. I appreciate any help with this.
Really the only way is to buy a phone off-contract.
Yeah as far as buying new, either catch a sale right around launch and buy it retail or wait until the phones been out a few months or so until they're cheaper than the retail price at online auctions or classified listing.
Or you can add a new line and get a new phone. Then swap Sims and activate an old dumb phone on the new line which allows you to not have to pay the $30 smartphone package. Ends up costing about 12-15 after the 9.99 monthly charge with taxes and usage fees added on.

I guess you have to buy one off contract. Swappa is great for buying gently used phones. Or you could buy a Nexus 4 or Nexus 5 when it comes out.

If I remember that thread he got it by transferring the upgrade from one line to his or something. I think that's what happened.
Right now I'm on the old Nationwide Family Talk & Text plan. We have 2 phones; 1400 min, unlimited data and text. My girlfriend and I don't even come close to 1400. I took a screenshot of my data usage and my gf's from the vzw app. I believe it shows that I used over 5gb for this billing period so far? Am I able to see last months total data usage online? My 3yr old uses my phone a lot so I'm worried about tier data plans. Oh and we pay about $175 a month for this plan for two phones which is insane
I think these are all of my options? Which do you feel is the best for me in the long run?
A. Pay full retail for two new phones and use the monthly payment plan so I can keep my unlimited data?
B. Switch to a data tier plan and drop unlimited so I can get the 2yr phone discount prices?
C. Wait until Dec when my contract is done and then switch to another carrier?
D. Try and find a use phone on Craigslist?
Right now I have a Rezound (used from Asurion) and my GF has a cracked DX2. Where looking at maybe the S4 or a 5s when it comes out. We always wanted to try iPhones.

My experience was not that bad considering I did a number swap with my girlfriend. Essentially she got my S3and I took her EVO 3D to do the One up. I did the number swap Friday the 4th so I actually couldn't do the One up til the next day. Went in at 9 was out of the store before 9:15. Compared to my S3 the N3 is a beast all its own and I love it.

Note 3 versus Galaxy Mega
Hi, I'm thorn between the Note 3 and the Mega. I know the Note 3 has a faster processor, more memory, ram and better screen resolution. currently I have the Note 2. I need the biggest screen I can get. don't use the Spen too much so no need of it. Anyone have tested the Mega?
A heads-up that Amazon just got the black model in stock -- I got an email saying that my earlier order has shipped, and it shows 2 more in stock currently. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-Note-Black-Sprint/dp/B00FJ8WBJG/ref=pd_sim_sbs_cps_1
Price is $299.99 for an upgrade, and they don't charge tax to most states (including IL), plus my Chase Freedom card is offering 5% cashback from Amazon purchases this quarter... so my bottom line is $285... pretty good, I'd say.

Well shoot, I see that the upgrade price is now $249.99! I'm chatting with customer service now to see if I can get a credit.

My order has been changed to reflect the new price! FYI, amazon's price match policy on cell phone purchases - http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/?nodeId=201077510

At the link I pasted. Choose individual or family account, and the option "I have a Sprint account and want to upgrade my current device to this one" gives a $249.99 price either way. Are you seeing something different?

I would like to know as well. It would be nice to get some of my money back.
Just a heads up to anyone considering moving from the HTC One to this phone should do it. I loved the speakers on the One but the battery life, screen size, and expandable storage are completely worth the switch. I'm really loving this phone and I use the stylus and S-Notes way more than I ever thought I would.

I just ordered it through Amazon online. I chose a random plan and called Sprint to activate it and keep my same plan before turning it on. Worked like a champ on this phone and my previous phone two years ago.

Ok... I was eligible for an upgrade so I went to Amazon and picked the Note 3 for Sprint. Sero obviously isn't a plan Amazon offers, so I chose one of the plans they do offer and ordered the phone. The phone showed up the next day. Before turning it on, I called Sprint and said I bought a new phone and want to activate it, but stay on the same plan. They said no problem and activated it. Done.
Two years ago when I was eligible for an upgrade that was the method Amazon told me to use if I wanted a plan they didn't offer. Just in case it didn't work, I didn't turn on the phone until I had confirmation from Sprint it would work.

Note 3 vs HTC One Max?
I picked up my Note 3 on 10/5 and have 14 days to return. I'm thinking about checking out the HTC One Max but the non-removable battery may be a deal breaker for me.
Note 3:
My Cons:
Call quality is so bad
I rarely use the SPen (only to show off) so it's useless
hardware power button moves around alot (super minor)
WatchON and My Magazines sometimes pops up with it not responding (I don't use them)
My Pros:
Screensize/resolution is AMAZING (I came from an S2 Lol)
Battery life: WOW. I stream Pandora all day, utube, txt/emails, and I can still get about 24 hr usage with my HEAVY use.
SD Card slot
Removable battery: Awesome for traveling
Charging: WOW. charges from 0-100 in about 2 hours and 30m
HTC One Max(rumored specs) :
My Cons:
Battery: Non-removable battery???? May be a deal breaker for me.
Size: It was looking to be 5.9 view-able but now they think it will be the same 5.7 as our note 3? The phys size looks like it might be half an inch or so bigger then the Note 3. Will be disappointed if the view-able screen is 5.7 instead of 5.9.
My Pros:
If screen-size will be 5.9, this will put me one step closer on making me want to switch.
Similar battery life as the note 3
SPEAKERS!!! I'm a media person, and stereo/front speakers might push me over the top to switch.
Just minor things that I've though about. Please let me know of your thoughts!
10/18 will be the last day I will be able to undo my note 3 purchase with no penalties (besides the $35 restocking fee). I think the HTC One Max will come out on 10/15 as rumored so I'll be trying it in store to get a better feel of which phone suits me best.
How were you able to retain your sero?

Once he physically got the phone, he called and just activated the phone on his current plan, which is a SERO.
WTF is a sero
