I dont know if you realize but the top & bottom parts where the stereo speaker grills are are not part of the aluminum "unibody" so those parts are most likely glued on or snapped in or something like that.. it's up to you if you want to return it over something like that
I wouldn't but that's just me

Dat Gap..... I just felt like I was on the chive with how big that was.
Hope the rest of us don't run into the same issue, best of luck with your exchange...

look at the pics from anandTech review same gap that you have i think.

I'm sorry, but I don't really see an issue with your device. I would rather have one without the gap, but don't think I'd return it for that reason.
Do you have any other defects? Really be a shame to return it for one that has dead pixels, LCD light leakage, screen discoloration, etc.

And this is an ATT phone you got already? If not this is the wrong section.

I looked at the 3 ATT had on display today. None had a gap like that. The metal on yours looks kinda jagged, its not a smooth cut (kinda like your thumbnail) Looks like a defect in the case. You can fix your thumbnail (tlc) dont know if you can fix that case I'd exchange it.

I also went to 2 different stores, one last night and one today. Both display devices had no gaps...although the one near Penn station was severely abused already with multiple gashes on the sides and the plastic. I would sent it back

return
return NOW!

Nice subtle burn there
For anyone with this 'gap' defect, does it seem as though the speaker grille could come loose/fall off because of it? It's a shame that one of the only non-machined part on the phone is already showing such obvious signs of a defect. Here's hoping it's contained to one of the first batches :fingers-crossed:

I'd return it there is not a gap in mine

Actually, to me it looks like there is. Looks the same as the Ops, but a fraction smaller. Even in the same place.

I can't get a finger nail in it even. I did noitce that the front must be very thin aluminum. I already have a small dint in that edge and I've been extremely careful with it.

Gap between bezel and touchscreen glass

Does anyone else's sgs2 have a noticeable gap between the touchscreen glass and the aluminum bezel? Mine has a very noticeable one on the entire left side and bottom. The top and right sides are flush with the bezel. It looks like the glass wasn't cut to spec.
I want to get an idea of how widespread this is. Best buy didn't want to exchange it, and I could probably live with it if I can find a way to keep the dust out.
this is the first of this problem that I've heard. My bezel is flush against the glass. Pesonally, I wouldn't live with it. I would try to exchange it. Even if that means calling AT&T directly.

Mine is flush... If you have a moment, please stop in at any AT&T store and see the unit(s) on the display rack mine and my two colleagues here at work have their unit's GLASS flush with Bezel... No visible nor noticable gap...

Mine isn't uniform all the way around. The gap at the top of my phone increases going from left to right, looking at the phone.
It's a small difference, but I do see it capturing dust in the short time I've had it, about 3 weeks.
Thanks for the quick replies. I'm a little hesitant on exchanging because there is always the risk of getting a phone with even more defects.
But at least now I know it's not normal so I don't feel bad when trying to persuade Best buy to let me exchange.
Mine seems flush. If it isnt that much of a hassle would you post a picture of the gap? Im really interested to see it lol.

Same here on my end.
Attached are pictures of my bezel-to-glass gap. As you can see, it's collecting a lot of dust in the 3 weeks I've had it. And this is with a case too.
I'm about to head out to Best Buy. Wish me luck!

No luck. They wouldn't let me exchange because it was functionally okay. Oh well, at least I tried.
At this point I can live with it. The Atrix had many more build quality issues than this phone anyways.

One of my many Infuses had this. It was horrific. The AT&T manager gave me hell and claimed he couldn't see it but I pressed and he eventually caved and exchanged it for me.
Hell take it right to samsung, I would bring it right to them if no one else gives a replacement.
There are several issues. The one most people notice is that by design there is a 1 mm gap between the screen and the bezel. This was designed this way as with many phones because the screen expands and contracts in the heat, so there has to be a little play for it to move. It's normal. Some phones it's more noticeable, and the material they use seems to collect dust a bit more than other phones. I have 2 SGSII ATT versions and 1 SGSII International and all 3 seem to be dust magnets above the earpiece and on the left and right sides in the 1mm gap.
This is completely normal though. If you want a phone without a bezel, get an iPhone, hehe

Don't use that as an excuse.. If they wont take it back Samsung will.. Just call the Samsung 800 number and get a RMA - explain there is a problem in the case integrity, If they say NO, then you have a free shot when it does screw up for any reason. Just make themPUT IT IN WRITING in an email and explain why they are denying the RMA. Once in writing, you have them by the ... if anything does happen to the display at all..

Galaxy s3 screen durability!

Hey there guys!
I ordered the s3 but i saw quite a big number of users getting their screen broken!
Is the s3's screens problematic?do they break very easily or is it just some random cases?
Please respond!

Yes, it really is as **** as you are led to believe. Good luck, you'll need it.
Woah....didn't expect that...
My S1 was being constantly under bad use due to falls ect but nothing ever happened to it....
Should i fear my S3 for failure? What can i do?I already ordered a Zagg IvisibleShield and also a TPU case for my device...

Anything else to consider?
Sorry for the link,i'm from greece!
Google translate can make it up for you...
I dropped mine this morning very much like they did on Android Authority and it had an Incipio Sylicrilic case. The phone fell with the screen hitting a hard granite floor first and I wasn't worried because of the case. I spent a couple of weeks with the phone dangling around between change and keys and lots of things in my pockets and it didn't show a single scratch yet. If you use a kind of bumper that dissipates some energy you will be fine mate.
testamony......lol
now up to 7 drops....all waist height and above. the screen is scratchless and crackless
now the silver bumper.....thats a different story, it looks like a phone i have had for OVER a year.
oh yea, NO CASES or Screen Protectors are on my phone.
i have been VERY IMPRESSED with the glass
i have had the s1 2 and 3 (the s2 being the most durable). The s3 definitely needs a case in my opinion, unless of course you never drop your phone. It only takes one awkward bounce on a solid surface for it to shatter.
The weakest point on the S3 screen is the glass under the home button, it`s very thin and narrow, and can be broken just by pressing the home button area a little too hard.
John.
Thank you all guys!
You are a great help!!
So this TPU case i got should be okay?
I heard the TPU cases are very good energy absorbers...
Put it this way, the S3 uses Gorilla Glass 2 which is thinner yet supposedly more durable. In my ecoerience I have never had a Gorilla Glass display break on me, but that's certainly not to say one wouldn't, i've just been lucky.

Obviously when people drop their phone they gonna be pissed off and some are gonna make a lot of noise about how bad the phone is, but the fact is the first month of S1 and S2 were exactly the same so right now it's hard to tell if it's got really bad glass or just really pissed off customers.

The Zagg invisible crap makes your screen bubbly and look horrible, and the texture of it is even worse... and by bubbly and horrible, I mean if you look under the light your screen looks like a goddamn mountain range.

One fall from desk height, 2 feet on something hard, that's all it took for me. I had an HTC 2 years. That would not have broken. The thing is extremely easy to break! Incredibly easy, in fact.
1 drop from waist height was all it took to kill my s3, small crack in the bottom left hand corner and screen wont even turn on, and no touch input.
This was really disappointing for me, my s1 and s2 have both been through a million times more. It's one of the reasons i love samsung phones.
They don't break. I was really disappointed by the s3. I'm back to abusing my s2 now with a really pretty brick on my desk.
I was going to get the note II but considering its basically a larger s3 I'm guessing the durability will be just as poor

I agree. Today i droped my phone for the first time it felt from a chair. My heart stopped for 1 second it felt right on the corner, the weakest spot of it. Fortunaly nothing happened. I use a silicon case but don t trust it that much.

Had my phone for 5 days, while shopping for a case, dropped it 1 foot onto floor, shattered the glass to pieces. It's off to Samsung for repairs, not sure how much $$$ it's gonna cost to repair, and also I have now lost my warranty due to breaking the glass, so hopefully the phone doesn't crap out in the next 3 years of my contract. Oh and btw, I had an S1 with a cheapy case, dropped many times, no cracks whatsoever, so I truly believe the glass is much weaker. My suggestion would be to get a case, but which one is going to protect it, I am very concerned now.

[Q] Dropped my Galaxy S3 and need help choosing what to buy

Need help
i just dropped from my bed my Galaxy and the ultra mighty gorila glass cracked but the touch and the screen are fine, no leaks or whatever, i just need to know what i have to buy to fix this mess
i found the digitizer LCD Display and Touch Screen not included that cost $18 dollars
or the full lcd touch combo that cost $239 dollars
as i said the touch is 100% working and the lcd doesnt have any leaks
i have searched similar topics but the other cases have broke lcd
thanx in advance :good:
Just found this video, i think im going to buy only the glass, the other solution is to expensive with 239 dollars i can get a new s3 with my mobile plan
So sorry for your phone man. I guess since the touch still works you will only need the front glass. To be honest i'm looking forward to see the answer of your question, since i never understood properly how the digitizer and the front glass work. Always thought they were the same.
Seeing images like of your phone is the reason why i bought my UAG case.

You will need to buy them both. I have completed this repair numerous times for friends and family, and the digitizer will break close to 99% of the time.
I do consider myself very tedious and patient, but it is glued to the screen and there's a pretty slim chance of it coming off in one piece.
You can heat it up and try to get it as soft as possible, but it's super sticky.
Do yourself a favour and buy them both or else you're going to be waiting for a digitizer to come once you've started the repair process.
Hope this helps.

The newer supposed "thinner and stronger" Gorilla Glass thst is on S3 is nowhere near as scratch and crack resistant as the thicker original on phones like the OG Epic. This one can get those hairline scratches much easier thsn the original. Dont try the key scratch test on the S3. I will say this though, i have 2 i9300s. One new in box and the one i use has the back cover with the white flap that covers the screen. I dropped it 2x from 4 feet on concrete and only a slight scuff on the silver side bezel

Guys, for real, why does everyone think that gorilla glass is crack resistant? I mean, than bigger a screen gets than easier it can break, this is physics...
Gorilla glass more about to be scratch-resistant.
and in the case of OP I would buy a new screen and then be more careful with my phone. I just got a cheap silicon case and it protects my phone from everything without needing a screen protector.

I'd buy the digitizer for $18, worst case LCD breaks whilst separating and you'll need to buy the complete unit. Best case you fix it and save yourself $225 on complete unit.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
From my personal experience, i'd say you'd better buy the complete unit with the glass, the digitalizer and lcd pre-assembled on the frame. I've bougth a 2 week old GT-i9300 from a friend who had dropped it and had also the problem with the sim card blocked inside and just broke the sim card reader to take it out... As i said, i've managed to have it at a really good price and bought the lcd unit (samsung original on e-bay) and believe me, you will save yourself a lot of work as the gorilla glas is glued to the digitalizer witch is also part of the oled screen, witch makes it almost impossible to take the gorilla glass without breaking the rest, or, even if you manage to get it out, you'll never glue it again without any air trapped between the two... just look on ebay, i found mine for 163€.
I have the same problem as the OP. Dropped my SGS III couple of days ago and screen cracked though I still have 100% touch screen functionality. I am planning to get it fixed though have to say that incident has made me lose confidence in the sgs3. My sgs2 was such a solid piece of abuse taker. Over one year of use and dropping on concrete and worse on a number of occasion all without a scratch. Right now I am considering the HTC One X maybe it's using the old guerilla glass which seems more durable.

How's the durability of the metal back this far?

I was very disappointed to see the matte finish wear off after only a few weeks on my HTC one x. With this one I'm thinking that the back may be a scratch magnet. Anyone have significant scratching on the back yet?
in pouch all the time, no chance to scratch it
Carry mine naked (the phone not me) and not a single mark on it yet. It may be to soon to tell but so far so good..
I panicked when I realized that my keys were in the same pocket as my phone. But not a scratch yet.

No scratches on the body, but like the guy before me I accidently dropped my phone into my pocket with keys, I got a couple small little nicks on the bezel but you can only see them on an angle. I'm going to see if I can polish them out. I googled it and saw that a normal kitchen sponge with the one rough side gets them out, Also heard toothpaste and just ordered some aluminum polish.
Other people only noticed when I show them, and my GF said I have severe OCD because the nicks are so tiny. She is right. It's not really noticeable to anyone but me, but it's driving me insane!

Not looking so good for the black one so far, it seems they chip really easily near the top above the camera. So sad, because its so nice looking.
I think I've seen finish problems on every single One variant thats been released from HTC...

Probably the same way it went with the black iphone 5
Judging from the one at best buy I would not say it is holding well.

Was that the silver or black one?
If the thing is going to looked chipped to hell in a month from normal use, I'll just return it now. My s3 started to chip the silver rim and I got rid of it immedaitely. I can't stand something that looks like crap for no reason whatsoever, actual damage is one thing but come on....
The iPhone 4 was a tank and was beautiful. Is this so much to ask from an android phone?

If it's a dummy version, it's clearly made with less resilient materials. The dummy model at my local Walmart looks terrible while the real phone at my local AT&T store is flawless.

Mock devices are identical except the internals. 99% of the time

This isn't one of those times. The buttons on the dummy phone are not usable, it's ridiculously light, and the feel is somewhat different. The real phone was sturdier and had functional buttons, of course. They were both set out on the same day in each store and the dummy looks terrible now while the real phone looks perfect. It's a pretty decent indicator of the dummy phone being made with cheaper materials.

I don't know what store this was... But the retail location I was at, the mock was dead on accurate weight. Buttons obviously don't work on a fake device.

I just don't believe that HTC would have spent the time to assemble a phone that isn't going to be functional since it apparently takes a lot of time to assemble the aluminum body for the HTC One.

No scratches on the aluminium surface but the beats audio red logo and writing have almost disappeared. White 'audio' writing still there.
I dropped my One on hardwood and it rolled over onto a brick ramp (I was at the entrance to a restaurant) and skidded down it on its back. There are some deep scratches on the back and scuffs, but it's okay. Definitely want to put a case on it if you plan on using it out on the street

I was very disappointed to see the matte finish wear off after only a few weeks on my HTC one x. With this one I'm thinking that the back may be a scratch magnet. Anyone have significant scratching on the back yet?

The matte finish wears off much more easily because the material was plastic. Microscopically, a matte finish is just an unpolished, jagged surface. Since it's plastic, it's not hard enough to be able to withstand the forces exerted on it when rubbed by your pocket/hand/table long enough so it gets polished over time (check out a computer mouse that's been used for a long time). This is completely different than scratching or chipping, which is a complete removal or deformation of the material. The nice thing about plastic is that because it's soft, it's much easier for hairline scratches to "heal" over time as the surface gets rubbed on.
The aluminum back will definitely maintain the matte finish better than plastic because it is a harder material. Drawback is that since it's harder, it's also more brittle so it's more subject to chips/nicks and hairline scratches will stick around forever.
TL : DR Material properties are a *****. The matte finish (it's actually a bead blasted finish) will stick around for awhile as long as your hands/table/pockets aren't made of sandpaper or things harder than aluminum.

Help Me Ease My OCD

So I sat down with the HTC One in my back pocket and noticed it far later in the day what I have done. No cracks or visible damage, the only concern I have is that the aluminium back has concaved a little bit. Anyone test how strong the metal on this phone is?

Are you saying you can visibly tell the metal has bent? I have the same concern about putting the one in my back pocket.
tiny hair
Count me in, I have s tiny hair under my HTC one screen about 1mm and am so ocding about it, I don't think the store I bought from would replace it because of such a thing let alone he might not even notice it. I might as well get s worst device than the one I got, I am sure if someone else bought the one he might not even notice it.
Note to all the skinny jean hipsters and chicks that put the phone in their back pocket...it's not a tiny iPhone...it's not meant to be sat on!
