How tough is the S3? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody,
I am considering purchasing an S3 but i have a quite big question for witch i could not find an accurate answer on this forum. Is it true that the display of the I9300 is predisposed to cracks due to it's slightly curved shape? I have a friend that has a GSM service and he told me that most of the S3s that came to him for a repair had that kind of problem and he also said that i shouldn't buy this kind of phone.
Unfortunately I cannot afford the new S4 and the S3 felt pretty good in my hand when I had the chance to test is a bit. In general i take good care of my phones, but I am wondering, are there any chances of breaking the screen alt the slightest shock that the phone would receive?

I dropped mine a fair few times (on concrete) and its never broke, I have a flip front case on it and its still like new (I've had it for about 6 months now)

Thank you for your fast response. So your opinion is that I should buy one, right?

Haha its not up to me mate, I'm just saying the S3 is no more breakable then any other phone... I definitely don't regret buying my S3. But its still up to you.

Another thing I want to ask. How is the GPS on the S3? I travel quite a lot and I use the GPS every time, but mine i9001 is simply rubbish as it takes about 7-8 minutes until it gets a lock, the signal is mostly weak and the error is somewhere between 60 and 100 meters and it gets disconnected from time to time. I tried custom ROMS, different GPS tweaks and apps that were supposed to make the GPS on my phone work properly but it was all in vane.
Did you had the chance to test the GPS on your phone? How does it behave?

If you're worried about it's toughness just get a solid case, plenty to chose from. I got a black UAG and it's an excelent compromise between tough, weight and style. That said, i don't think it was made for being able to stand much. Never dropped mine, even with the case but i don't think it would take the beating well.
About the gps it's realy good. Also had an i9000 and i definitly know where you're coming from but it's quite different with the S3. Locks really fast. As always, the very first time takes a while. From that point on it's golden. Few seconds and it's ready. Even faster than my proper ndrive gps device. Also doesn't break lock which was my real problem with the i9000. With slimrom, at this very moment, from inside a cafe near the window, mesured with GPS Test, i'm picking 9 / 10 sattelites with an accuracy of 10 - 12 meters.

ive got to agree I've dropped my s3 twice without its case on and all I have is a tiny scratch on the plastic back cover.
and i use gps all the time while out bike riding (often in no cell signal areas) and it is really fast at connecting and the only time it's ever disconnected was a trip to a toilet with a roof overhead.

As I mentioned in my first post in general I take good care of my phones. On my i9001 I have a Momax case like this http://forum.softpedia.com/uploads2/1c/anunturi_image_153850.jpg and I am very pleased with it as it protected my phone very well when I dropped it. Maybe I can find one for the S3 too.
Thank you all for your responses and advices. I hope that next week I'll be the owner of a new Samsung Galaxy S3. :fingers-crossed:

Chuck Norris has a S3 Thats how tough it is! - Seriously, i dropped a pint glass on mine! I put it on the worktop, went to get a glass = slipped glass from cupboard on to S3! the glass broke! S3 just laughed it off, not a scratch! ( I realise i was very lucky)

Well, try to get the i9305 (the 4G one). The price difference shouldn't be significant, it's the same as the S3 except with 2Gb of ram (the s3 only has 1Gb). Makes a world of difference, trust me.

It's tough. But then again, if you take good enough care of your device, they're all tough.I'd say give it a try. Most carriers have an option, where you can try a new device for two weeks, and if you don't like it, you can send it back and get a new one. I'd do that. Personally, I've never had any mechanical problems with any of my Samsungs (M7600, Omnia 7, Galaxy S II, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S III) and I'm pretty happy much with them.

Depends on the luck of the bounce here is a two foot drop onto grass

2 feet on to grass? Maybe you launched it from two feet onto grass. I'm gonna call BS. Had to be a stone or something in the grass. I've dropped mine from about 5'8" onto cobble stone like path way and all it got was a couple little spots where the pain chipped and plastic kinda "dented" or chipped. No scratches. Its pretty durable. Dropped mine about 6 times and I've had it since about a week after it came out. Not a screen crack or break. I don't use a case.

You are wright. The i9305 is only 30 euros more expensive than the original i9300. I'll wait a little more and save the extra 30 euros and I'll definitely get the i9305. Thanks for the tip.

I own an gs3 but they say that its not that well made.i mean i ve seen some drop tests and it didnt go very well compared to other phones. However it is the best buy i ve made so far ,so it is up to you.

I work in an environment where I have had the opportunity to talk with a representative from Gorilla Glass. Gorilla Glass is still glass. It is certainly more resistance to breakage and scratches than non GG, but tap it right at the wrong frequency, and it'll crack real well. My wife's phone was dropped by our 7 year old the 2nd day she had it. Hairline crack in two places.
I'm going to go slightly OT, but it's still relevant. IF you break your glass, the part that breaks is a cheap $10 part to replace. Only, replacing ONLY the glass is all but impossible. Don't ask me how I know. You're best off buying the full frame with the LCD, digitizer, and front glass pre installed. Then, just a gentle hand can replace the glass in about 10 minutes. I just bought such an assembly today for about $170 on eBay.
But the general sentiment here still holds true - unless you're buying a Rugby, the general toughness of the S3 is going to be generally the same as any other similar sized device.

Wow. Seriously? Well.. that sucks ***k..
I'm on a contract with the German Telekom (T-Mobile (Before any Americans start bloating about how cr*p they are in America: They're the best Provider, here in Europe!)) and I've always had those chances. Maybe you should move

Shattered Screen?

So, I'm guessing there's not one person here who hasn't seen someone using an iPhone with a shattered screen - I reckon you see at least one a week...
My understanding was because the capacitive screens used glass, instead of some kind of plastic on the ole resistive type screens...
So, the x10 has a glass screen, yeah? and so do a lot of devices that are coming out with capacitive screens
So why is it I've never seen a cracked x10 (or heard of one on this forum), or even anything other than a cracked iPhone...?
Are iPhone users just clumsy, or is it bad design...?
Not flaming the iPhone or its users, but why is it the only phone prone to cracking (as far as I can see)
thats a reasonable question. ive dropped my x10 several times now (clumsy i know) but no damage to report yet. i do have a few scratches in the touchscreen protective film from when the cat decided to swipe at the phone when it rang on the coffee table, but thats another story
same.. i've dropped it many times from above the waist level and it's got no scratch/no crack... nada...(i mean the screen)
I remember at least two threads about shattered or cracked x10 displays (ok, over one of them rolled a bus, so don't let us count that one...). It's not a specific problem of the iphone, it's a problem all big displays have to face.
Sorry for not searching the other threads, but it's 2am here and i'm too lazy right now...

Yeah, seems there were at least 2 others - one got hit by a cricket ball, and another was cracked when the owner was trying to change their cover from black to white...
All of which are more like freak accidents, than common place.
I've seen maybe two shattered iPhones ever, and I see a lot of them on the trains here.
What's the point of this thread? To talk **** about the iPhone...? Like, the iPhone is the highest selling smartphone in the world... which means with their numbers, problems are going to seem bigger than they are, but they're still only a proportional percentage of the total. I would predict a similar percentage of shattered (by dropping) X10 screens as the iPhone.

But since it wasn't clear at the start, I'm just curious (I think that's what forums are also for, but maybe they're just to whine about 1.6 and 2.1 )
You are right though, it's probably got a lot to do with the percentage of iPhones, but less than a third of the phones out there are iPhones, so I'd expect there to be more other cracked phones (not just x10's) - you know, 1 iPhone for 2 other phones (maybe a Desire, perhaps a Driod, or god forbid, maybe even a Galaxy S )
but no, I've only seen iPhones, and quite a lot... I recall at least 5
I can't say I see any smartphones outside of the X10 or iPhone on any sort of regular basis here in Japan, but, I've never seen a smashed X10 and only two iPhones.
I don't think any phone is more "prone" to accidents, but it stands to reason that the more mainstream your product becomes, the more irresponsible your customer base will be with your product. Like, for the most part, geeks who take care of their phones will own an X10, but a bunch of kids or people who just don't care.
ive just been in london and while on the underground ive seen 6 or 8 people using cracked screen iphunes, and i have also dropped my x10 afew times and no damage on her what so ever!

That's a good point... I guess the most 'kids' seem to have iPhones, and out of everyone I've seen with a cracked phone, they certainly appear to be the type of person who wouldn't care too much...
Three cheers for us geeks with x10's !!!
And also, I reckon we're all so careful with our x10's cos we're patiently waiting for 2.1, and who wants to finally get 2.1 on a broken phone...??
ive seen iphones crack from just getting placed on a table. Ive seen pretty bad cracks from iphones being dropped.
Ive dropped the x10 a few times and ive had some pretty heavy stuff land squarely on the screen and its held up. in terms of overall build quality its on par with my blackberrys for sure
the rubberised backing of the x10 makes it harder to slip out of the hands.
I haven't seen or heard many desires with cracked screens either, but quite a few Samsung galaxy s with craved screens.
iPhone's are slippery with their glossy finish and the iPhone 4 is like a wet fish its so slippery.
I cracked mine
I cracked My screen playing golf it fell from about 1 metre and smashed the touch screen but still worked replaced it now for £90 though!
Ive seen one before. It was done on purpose with the end of a bayonet. But it was still smashed (needed to claim on the insurance because it would not charge) smashed a iPhone screen just by dropping it

Only the black one is rubberized. The white one is quite glossy.
Then again, I use covers on my phone, so my phones are always rubbered up!
Im the most unlucky owner
First I feel down some stairs with the phone in my back pocket = LCD display cracked
4 weeks later lost the phone out of a pocket while biking dropped on asphalt and smashed the corner of the fron/touch screen :-(
replaced both so I now know how to open a x10 and by the way got a very good offer on the front via ebay , original I think it was only 50 eur
N
I have seen many damaged Iphones. My boss actually cracked his screen getting it out of his pocket, and that was the second screen he broke.
He states that it is like the screen is already flexed and if he applied even a small amount of extra flex it would crack.

Here's a story for you that someone posted on another forum I use...
I went round to my mates earlier and as I got out of my car one of his naughbours was trying to start his motorbike so I offered to give him a push start.
As I was running along I felt something hit my knee, as I looked down I saw my X10 flying to the ground and right in front of the back wheel. Just at the time he released the clutch and the back wheel locked and well Im sure you can guess what happened.

Mega awesomeness/not so awesomeness discussion

OK, I think a lot of you are here from a note or note 2, am I wrong?
I came from a Tmobile note 2. When i saw the original note 2, i was hooked on the big screen phones. People don't seem to understand the no bezel thing. A 7 inch phone and 7 inch tablet are two completely different sizes, all because of the lack of bezel. And I will keep buying bigger phones until they don't fit in my pocket anymore.
Now, onto the specifics of the phone. Yes, I think it is a tiny bit slower that the note 2, but still, in some benchmarks it did even better than the note 2. And my test is, can i download using torrents (which suck the processor and ram) and still listen to skip free music, browse the web and navigate the phone. This champ can.
The screen is awesome. it just hits you its so bright. I would have loved a 1080 but hey...
Battery life is great. Ive got a few extra off brands until the oem's come out (if they ever do) but Ive said this before, If i have a 3,200 and a smaller phone has a 2,000-2,500. When the screens are on, we are evenly matched. But the screen is not always on. So when its off, we are both running the same radios and processors, but i have a bigger battery. People don't realize this.
I don't know about you early adopters, but i just paid 515 US, no tax for mine. I think that's pretty good.
Oh, the stares. I was one of the Note 1 early adopters. I loved all the attention and envy that poured in on all sides, call me shallow, but i loved it. Its been diminishing for a long time now, becayse the note 2 was basically around the same size and it came to all the carriers. The feeling is back in full force now. That's what you get for going up an inch.
The functionality of having a pocket-able big screen phone is amazing. It's a small pocket-able tablet, that also handles my calls and texts. You basically give up one handed use at this point, even though i have big hands, but you gain in every area; typing, watching videos, gaming, surfing, any app....
I'm curious how unpopular this phone actually is.... There is basically zero devs here. And correct me if I'm wrong, but it's been out for a month...
On a similar note, the lack of the Samsung battery/charger anywhere on the web is pissing me off. I like having the ability to keep batteries charges externally so my phone doesn't have to be tethered to an outlet. You just swap out the batteries and your back at 100%.

I came from the original Note so I can see and feel a big leap in performance. I guess if you came from a Note 2 then you might not notice any difference or maybe expect so much improvement that you think it's slower. Size wise I am very happy with it, friends and family actually didn't even notice that I'm using a Mega. You can only see the big difference if you set them next to each other, most of the time they see my phone from afar and think it's the Note. If strangers ask, I'll just tell them it's a mini tablet that can make calls rather than a huge smartphone.
Development is slow because they are waiting for a kernel to be developed by Philz and/or Chainfire. It's just been 2 weeks since its been available so I won't worry much about developer support. Right now I've just got root and deleted/uninstalled a lot of bloatware and disabled almost all features so my phone runs very fast. Also, using Foldermount I am able to install apps exceeding the internal storage capacity.
I got 2 extra batteries from eBay which are 3500 mah and I'm okay with the battery life so I'm just using one. As for popularity, I think it will be like the original Note where people started to like it when they saw it being used by others since just looking at the specs of it on paper is not as appealing as holding it in your hand and seeing that huge display for videos and games. Lots of other manufacturers are releasing phones over 6 inches and I'm sure it will be the norm next year.

However I think the Note 3 will be around 6" so the largest top spec device is going to be the Xperia X Ultra for some time, so thats what Im planning on going for (despite the limitations of non removable battery an no flash)... I'd love a 6.5 or 7" Note with small bezels, removable battery etc but I just cant see it being an option this year..
I do predict though that next year we will see some genuine top notch 7" convergence devices. Even with the new Xperia X Ultra if they had trimmed the top and bottom bezels they could have almost fitted a 7" screen into the same footprint. It would have to be "marginally" wider of course. Exciting times ahead I think. I know the tech industry moves fast, but its not moving fast enough for me lol
Bold move by Sony though. At least they are genuinely trying, even if they haven't quite hit it on the head yet.

I hear what you're saying, and I love the large screens, but that Xperia Ultra looks TOO damn big. I think they crossed the line with that one. I think that 6" is perfect for me, but i'm willing to do the Mega 6.3 because Samsung made it so thin and it looks stylish. But the Xperia Ultra kinda looks like a small brick. lol
This would be an ideal device for me if it only had apt-x support. Samsung build quality, large battery, great display, no Exynos(!!).
I have wireless speaker system at home and I use HS3000 headset a lot when I am commuting.
The difference in sound compared to standard Bluetooth A2DP is noticeable.

I thought it has apt X support as mentioned in the Engadget review
Anyway, we use Sonos so it's not a requirement for us.

I agree and I'd have been happier with the mega form factor. Lets hope they see fit to outfit it with top specs at a later point.

Here is a video of the Xperia ZU pocket test. I don't think you can walk comfortably with that in your pocket let alone sit or put it in your shirt pocket unlike the Mega. Even the ads for it never show it being put in the pocket, just in bags. The difference in screen size is just 0.1 inch (2.54 mm) which is almost negligible and for that small increase you get a phone that is 2.78 square inches bigger than the Mega plus onscreen buttons that take up to 10 mm of the screen. Also, on screen buttons can be a hassle specially when playing games because they are more prone to tapping.

Mega 6.3
Off screen buttons + bigger actual usable screen = better gaming experience
The price of the Xperia ZU is also questionable at the moment.
You can buy 2 Galaxy Mega 6.3s with over £110 left over with the pre-order price tag.
So how's the Mega like in low light? If you're using it in the bedroom at night with lamps turned off? Is it as bad as the Note 10.1 where light bleeds from the edges and blacks are grey?
GT-N7100 via Tapatalk 2
The pocket size is not really an issue for me. I wear loose bottoms most of the time at home/gym and don't even put my current phone (note 2) in my pocket while in the car or at work.
I admit the ultra certainly has its shortcomings, and without dismissing the mega 6.3 (I bought one for the mrs and she loves it), there really is noting else with real top end specs with the same real estate.
Give me a mega 6.3 with a 1080p screen and a snapgragon 800 and I'd be all over it. It just doesn't exist yet. While nobody can really say they really "need" all that extra horsepower I "want" it and thats enough for me to pay a premium. The device itself will only cost me £49 upfront on my current contract which is up for renewal.

I'm using it right now in bed with the lights off and I can't see any light bleed on the screen. The blacks will not be as deep as AMOLED but it's very good. I actually like the fact that it's brighter than my original Note under sunlight and darker at night time which is great for the eyes.

I'm sure the Mega you wish for will be available next year. As for now, I'll enjoy the first gen Mega since I usually change my phone every year. Paying over double the price of the Mega for something which is not over double the advantage is not for me.
^^^^^^^^^ Logically your right of course, but been as my contract is up and its a case of having the mega 6.3 free of charge or paying £49 upfront for the Ultra Im not going to sweat it.. If i had to double down in cold hard cash and buy outright it would be a completely different senario.

How much do you pay each month and how long is the contact? Are they already offering the Xperia Z Ultra? What network is this?

Thanks... so what you're saying is that at night in bed you can actually make the Mega less bright than the Note2? If that's the case then it's great.

Im with 3 mobile uk. I pay £36 a month for 2000min 5000texts and unlimited data including teathering. Its a 2 year contract. Its been announced they will carry it in Sept. Upfront prices have been rumoured but not confirmed yet. The plan price will stay the same it always does its just the upfront cost that will vary. The £49 upfront sounds about right.
At the end of my contract I usually cancel and take another contract out with the same carrier through quidco the cash back site and get about 100 cash back

Yes. I need an app to get the original Note's brightness down to acceptable levels at night which I don't need with the Mega.

I see. So the £49 up front is not official, being the most expensive phablet/smartphone at the moment I expect the upfront cost to be higher.
£36 x 24 months + £49 upfront = £913 is not bad if you use most of the included minutes, texts, and data.
I just use an Ovivo SIM which give me 150 minutes, 250 texts, and 500MB data every month for FREE so I just look at the actual cost of the phone.
^^^^^^^^^ The upfront cost is going to be same as a 32gb or 64gb iphone 5.
The ebay link posted on the previous page is inflated. You can order for Expansys for £639 http://www.androidorigin.com/sony-x...se-date-set-to-september-13-priced-at-639-99/
By comparison the 32gig iphone 5 is £599 and the 64gb is £699. But yeah using that rational the xperia Z Ultra upfront cost should be about £150... Three charge £129 upfront for the 32gig iphone.
Theres not that much difference in their price plans...The basic ones (with devices) start about £30, and the unlimited one is £36. I have been known to download torrents and teather my laptop to the phone so its nice just not to have to worry about worrying out of date etc

Glass being prone to crack?

I'm thinking about buying a Z5 Compact, but when reading about all the cases, where the glass on the front or the rear have cracked, on the Z1 Compact and Z3 Compact, I'm not so sure anymore.
What is the situation like with the Z5C vs Z3C/Z1C regarding the glass being prone to crack?
Thanks in advance.
David
I'm in the same situation myself.
However, I doubt we will be able to get feedback regarding this already. The "cracked glass" cases on the Z3C appeared IIRC only some time (months) after the release. Personally I plan to try to resist the urge to buy for 2-3 months and then check if there are any reports.

Just that. I'd wait a few months for a new batch, then you should be fine.

That's exactly what I said about my z3 compact for 9 months, feeling smugly sorry for all the people reporting cracked glass, until it cracked in my hand. On the other hand, that was the best reason to buy a z5 compact. Silly me.

It's been discussed in many other places and the consensus is that it doesn't have gorilla. Apparently, the producer for Sony tempered glass panels is unknown.

Bumping this up a bit..
Didnt want to open a new thread seeing as how this one is still here.
I'm on the edge of purchasing this phone but the spontaneous cracking glass issue and low durability of its predecessor (Z3C) are bugging me..
Was wondering if there are perhaps some more updated impressions regarding this.
Thanks.
I had z1c then z3c, my girlfriend, my sister and brother in law all still have the z3c.
All glass backs.
No cracks on any of these devices.
Other then when literally throwing the phone to ground by accident the front digitiser cracked (back was intact.)
Easy replacement as new chassis with inbuilt digi and screen was like £60 and very simple to replace the housing.
The spontaneous glass crack is hoopla if you take my consolidated multi user experience.
Don't let this phase your decision.
Also bear in mind the glass back plate believe it or not is the simplest thing to replace takes 2mins with a heatgun (again first hand experience.)

I'd be interested to hear more on the replacement procedure. Are there detailed instructions? If it isnt majorly expensive then it's not THAT big of a deal.
I see many cases on the market but no one ever actually tests the case to see how effective it is. Who is willing to drop their phone several times and see if their case works I remember seeing a review of iphone bumpers where they actually did drop several phones and only the really thick ones (like 0.5cm wide) actually protected the phone. Glass typically breaks from an edge hit. Does the glass go all the way to the edge, or is there a border around it? What is the boarder made of and how much energy can it really absorb. Now intuitively, I'd assume that the "compact" phone would be more resilient to cracks due to its size.
My last phone, I had a protector, but my current phone doesnt have one. I've never broken a screen, though I've cracked the casing. Both were gorilla glass. But I have no idea if that is just dumb luck.
I had a Z3, in a high quality case, the back cracked by itself. I was having issues with the speaker being quiet but was told the warranty was void due to the hairline crack in the back. Then a while later I dropped it but I caught it on my foot before it hit the ground so it was a very minor fall, but it was enough to crack the screen, a very thin hairline crack but still a crack, this stopped the screen from working so I was stuck without a phone. I got it replaced, and the back while I was at it, cost me $300 (AUD) to fix. The day I got the phone back, I was sat down at a table, wrote a message to my wife put the phone back in my jacket pocket, she text back so I pulled the phone out to check the message and there was a big crack across the screen. I did not drop it at all! Again the screen would not work. I didnt want to pay another $300 to fix the phone as they said the crack was due to stress (bull), so I bought a s6 galaxy, even though my Z3 was only 4 months old! Because the screen would not work with the crack in it, I could not get any of my data off the phone, when I plugged it into the PC I needed to unlock the phone but couldn't because the screen did not work, was very frustrated! Never buying a Sony again until they can confirm they have fixed this issue. The phone was too thin and flexed easily, my galaxy is thin but feels much more solid.
I have had a Z5C for a couple of months now. I spend a lot of time outdoors and am generally a bit rough with tech. I have dropped my phone from about a metre up a couple of times by accident already - knocked off tables etc. and have not suffered any ill effects yet.
Have dropped my phone SEVERAL times but still, screen takes it like a champ. Really durable phone if you ask me
I'm gentle with my phones, and even had a gel case on mine and yet the back seems to have cracked somehow without even a drop. The worst part is that I imported mine (don't sell them in Canada), so I can't get it fixed. I bought a skin from dbrand instead, and you can't even tell it's shattered any more.
Another user of z3c here , i can also confirm the glass problem is definitely a problem with z3c , dropped from 2 feet and back glass shattered , then drop from car seat on to the drive and cracked front from corner to corner disabling digitizer so now im using my phone with an otg mouse.
Im in the market for a new phone, but there is nothing except the z5c with a top spec that isn't stupidly big 5" + , i just tried a 5" asus phone very nice but just far too big for a phone, its not meant to be a bloody computer , its a phone, cant wait until they start becoming a bit more realistic again.
So i have looked at z5 , but i see exactly the same thread on the sony forums that was going for months if not years regarding z3 screen , and sony are still not taking responsibility and it looks like the design is still the same for z5c , such a shame as the phone is perfect in every way other than this defect (and some of the crap software add ons, but that's manageable)
Any other recommendations ?, it seems like i will be forced to buy an older gen phone , or a low end thing like moto E , why the hell did they make motog screen bigger after the first edition , ruined it as that was almost perfect too. I am considering a wileyfox , im just hoping some of these 5" ers have a minimal bezzal around the screen , the asus had a pretty big one it looked a like a plate , and that was their smallest one - how things have changed since the 8210 - at least i will save money if i buy a lower spec phone, but i'm a tech enthusiast and i want the best always have, they are turning away my money , there is nothing usable worth buying .
Back to the original topic , z5c , i just cant risk the money on it if it has such a fundamental floor , its an expensive phone compared to most other 4.5,6,7,8" phones that are usually around 100-150 , money isnt really the object though for the right phone i would pay. I have never had a phone screen crack before , and my z3 sees less action than any of my others as i work from home now and spend a lot more time in the house with my baby daughter, the htc phones are good , i lost count of the amount of times i dropped my desire HD hard , and when it was replaced by moto g it go even more brutal treatment as a second phone i kicked it down the road pissed and threw it against the wall several times, dropped down stairs and out of my pocket while riding a bike quickly , marks to the metal body but the screen was indestructible , i managed to break the moto g screen but i had fixed as i convinced them it was ridiculous that it broke failing off a sofa onto carpet but my replacement was fine , i had a painful time trying to do the same with sony though and with the endless complaints online, its obviously an inherent fault , im just appalled the z5c hasn't changed this.
This maybe a slightly unfocused rant , but i'm sure there are others that share my view , big spenders in the mobile sector have just been abandoned , someone needs to fill the gap in the market.
My partner also has the same issue , but is currently using a one mini 2 , which is very nice , but now slightly dated and HTC only went and cancelled all the updates , it didn't even get lollipop , why , it was the best phone they did by miles, and on top of that , they cancelled the mini3 , ultimate face palm
Where do i go chinese market ?
the blackberry blackphone is 4.7" , but i fear this is **** as it uses blackbery os, and i believe it has the other showstopping problem that the asus has , in that the processors architecture makes it incompatible with many apps, such as the only that is critical to me , the banking app with barclays.
Such a struggle, am i off to the chinese market? , i have no ****ing clue.

I'm with you on the needing a small phone thing. I'd check out Samsung's lineup. a3, a5, s4 mini, alpha, s5 mini. There's something for almost everyone. I was curious if the z1c and z3c but they always had there drawbacks, z5c I took the shot and ain't liking it.
If you dot care about expandable memory or user replaceable batteries there's a few other options as well.
Sadly , i ****ing hate the ugly samsung software, but i did seriously look at the a series, whilst thinking wtf , how am i being forced to consider a low end phone when tech is my number one interest and about the only thing i warrant spending lots of money on, i will end up saving money at this rate - i am looking at the oneplus x now, as it seems to have a bit smaller outer dimensions , and still a decent spec but of course it's 5" too
trouble is i ran into this page recently https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon/processors/820 , and now i need to have that processor in my next phone.
I think i will grab a wiley swift for now, only £130 to get me by , and even £20 cash back from manufacturer now , its not high spec i know , but im desperate for something now, and no way am i giving these 'leading' manufacturers money to encourage the ridiculous types of phones they are churning out by the bucket now, they are ****ing house phones not something to carry around with you, i could imagine them wall mounted , but Gzus i see some people carrying these things and it looks like they are going into battle with the 'visionaries' .....

Id try a z5c if it was about 1/2 the price and i didnt have a z3c already, for now i might just fix myz3c and put it inside a cage , it will still be smaller than these 5" devices - what did you find wrong with it though ?
I've owned a Z1C and now a Z5C and never had cracking issues on either. Don't drop your phone, it won't crack. If you're prone to dropping your phone, always get a case, because it's stupid to risk that much money on being clumsy.

G5 quality control issues are real?

Where ever i read three are several people going through all sorts of issues with G5. Iam currently waiting for mine but all these QC issues are really starting to make me worried.
Now i am not sure wether to go ahead or cancel my pre order.
Mine is flawless. Looks perfect, no headphone issues, wifi calling works. I guess I haven't looked at screen bleed but don't really care about that. Haven't noticed any screen bloom.

True, I dont see people complaining about iphone quality that much.
But all things aside, I am hoping that UK dont get that many defective units since we have stricter QC measure in place.
Like most things, people dont bother to write unless they have a complaint. So im sure for every complaint you hear there are a hundred happy people. I have had mine since release day and the only thing i am dissapointed in is the volume buttons being on the side(which i all ready knew).

Glad to hear u are happy with your G5.
As for the volume control I am glad that they decided to put it on the side, since its easier for me to skip tracks easily while phone is in my pocket but with my G3 i have to really search for it and most of the times i would just hit the power button or camera lens
Camera lens scratched already.
I've had the phone since April 1st and i've been very happy with, however i just noticed that my Camera's glass cover in the back is already scratched. I have a case on the phone and I've been very careful with the phone. I'm very disappointed and annoyed that this got scratched up so easily! has anyone else noticed this? just seems like a very cheap material in the back. Is there any protector i can buy or will it distort the image?

That sucks. I'm pretty certain I saw a case on Amazon that covers the camera as well. Yes, it must distort the photo a LITTLE but hopefully not much. Maybe it was the Lifeproof case?

Looks like you dont have a case on your phone, and since G5 has a camera bump it is bound to get scratched when left on a hard surface.

Keep your order. It'll be worth it for you trust me. Got mine from ee today. Absolutely amazing phone and in perfect condition with amazing build quality.
I've been very happy with the build quality of mine (had it since Wednesday), moving from a Nexus 5X the quality is in such a higher league in my opinion. So I am very happy. If build quality is your only concern I wouldn't worry, like others have said for every one complaint there will of been many more who have been fine! The phone (at least in the UK anyway) comes with a 2 year warranty (one year for the battery) so that has to go some way in showing that LG believe tha5 the build quality of the phone will last at least that amount of time. I've only got one problem so far which is that the camera, on both the normal and wide angle (although more noticeable on the wide angle) seems to distort massively, almost as though you are shooting through a plastic protective cover. Although I've picked at the camera it doesn't appear one was on it out of the box and I don't want to try too much harder in case it isn't and it is just a terrible software bug that it causing it! The camera in the 5X has been amazing in low light and this feels a bit of a deal breaker for me personally (the camera is the main feature even above battery). Has anyone else had to remove some a plastic cover from the camera after taking it out the box?

M8 i would just take it back and replace it, no point in taking a chance.
My G5 is flawless and looks amazing.
Got mine 4-1-16 and have had zero issues. No light bleed no calling or headphone jax issues no gaps and some say that the side ring or whatever around the phone is like sharp or something mine is not. Some people are saying the battery life sucks but mine is great i get 5 to 5.5 hours screen on time. Also if the screen is off over 8 hours like if i dont charge at night i get maybe 5 to 8% drop at most.
My suggestion is when you get your phone if you see anything wrong like sharp edges gaps light bleed go and exchange for a new one. I think I heard Lg has multiple plants manufacturing the phone and one of them must be effing up big time. I got mine at best buy so I dunno if that makes a difference
I've heard more complaints with the build quality of this phone than with any other in recent memory.
Yes, some may be nitpicky, but for a damn near $700 device, we're allowed to be picky.
I'm not saying it's a bad device, I'm just going by what I've been researching/seen instore. It sounds like it performs like a Champ but you may have to go through a few to get a solid built one.

Anyone recommend an armband for S20 Ultra?

So as we're in lockdown and allowed 1 daily exercise (in the UK) and I now have this 'massive' phone has anyone purchased an armband for the Ultra? I want to start going out for runs, to keep my fitness up a bit, so I don't turn in to big slob!
The ones I've looked on Amazon atm all seem to have poor reviews, mainly due to being too small for the phone.
Can anyone recommend??

Lol!! Hope not!
I originally purchased this for my S8+, but it does have enough room for my S20 Ultra with a Ringke Fusion case on (although it's a little snug). So depending on your case size, it may vary, but can confirm it works!

Thanks for the share, I'll have a look to see if Amazon UK have it.
Wish I could find one that has a clear window to interact with the phone without taking it out. The one I have that does kind of work like this, you have to hang around your neck - but I mostly used this in the water park or beach. I'm guessing jogging with that jiggling around would drive one crazy.

Came here to ask exactly the same thing
I found this one but I am not entirely convinced, a few reports of the thing falling off the armband, although most are good reviews.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B072C3SCW6
I found a waistband thing as well and am wondering if this would just be better all round than trying to hang it on my arm, zero chance of it falling off and its easy to get it in and out of it as well. That waistband might not be the best one so I am checking out others at the moment.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sport2People-Running-Belt-USA-Patented/dp/B07D2LGY6S
Other than that the quad lock 'run kit' looks ok but its so expensive I would be scared to go near it in case I dont like it and am stuck with a useless £45 armband. One of the reviews states "because it hangs away from your arm it tends to dangle when you run". I would probably also find this very annoying.
I am leaning towards a waistband type at the moment, I can't see any downsides to it while there are so many potential downsides to anything that goes on your arm, ESPECIALLY with a phone this big.

Thanks for this info, you really have done a lot of ground work!
I think I'm with you on the waistband, it looks the best value and probably comfiest to carry our big phones! Spending £45 is a lot a money IMO, not taking away the quality of it as my boss swears by Quad Lock and I think if you have the case, the car Dock its probably worth it.
Think I may try the waistband.

Yeah the quad lock thing seems quite good if you want a whole system that can work in car/bike etc as well. I was just picking holes in their 30 day money back guarantee as I was thinking about risking it if it was risk free like they claim.... "If you purchase a Quad Lock® product from us and don't like it, you have 30 days to arrange for a return and refund. No questions asked." Except then you go to "learn more" and you get "To be eligible for a return, your item/s must be unused, in the original packaging". So you can't actually see if "you like it" because it has to be unused and in original packaging still. Seems like false advertising to me, giving the impression its all risk free and no questions asked when it clearly isn't.
The only thing that might be a problem with a waistband is if it jumps up and down when you run so I think it cant be a bumbag type that hangs down, it literally needs to be like a belt and the phone goes in the belt so there is nothing to move around when you run. The one I linked is exactly that type but I am not sure an s20 ultra would fit and some of the reviews point to the quality potentially not being very good so I am searching for others that might be better quality but the same sort of design.
Looked at a few and think I am going to go with this one

Hmm that does seem like false advertising! How on earth can it be a no quibble 30 day replacement?
I've gone and ordered the original one you sent the link for and it arrives Thursday, so I'll let you know how it is, but there's a few others that look very similar and from what I saw most reviews have the odd 1 or 2 that say the same. At least with Amazon they are pretty good with refunds, I've never had an issue with an item that's been faulty 12 months later and got a refund.
Like you say its whether the S20 Ultra fits but I think that'll be the same for most as they all seem to accommodate up to 6.5" phone's.
Running belt has arrived @ewokuk I haven't used it yet but I've tried it on with my phone and it fits with the case (plastic clear one) albeit a little bit fiddly, will do the job tho! Thanks for sharing!!

I got the Gorwrich one and that seems fine. phone fits in it but its quite a snug fit, only just fits and thats with no case (fine by me as i dont use a case). I wouldnt go with the gorwrich one if anyone uses a case as it might not quite fit. The belt seems decent quality and fits quite nicely.

Nice! This is a snug fit tbh with this one and I was worried the zip may scratch the phone as it's pretty snug getting it into that part, so will leave my case on the phone.
At least now I can go for a run without my jacket, which with the weather how it is will be a bit more comfortable! :good:
