To all those with signal issues - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have noticed a good amount of threads popping up with people talking about signal issues, 3g/4g issues, connection issues or phone issues.
I was wondering if we could find out what the common factor here was and what fixes everyone has been using. I know that some people got new sim cars, problem solved. Some people restored to a full stock image via odin, problem solved. Reflashing the stock radio, problem solved.
So has anyone had any other solutions, issues or any other info regarding signal issues or anything relating to that?

Been through this with the Nexus, S3 and S4
The solution is to buy a Motorola RAZR or iphone.
Things that do not work -
Upgrading to the newest version of Android
Updating the Radio
Changing it to CDMA only
Lifting one leg up, putting one hand on your head and pointing your other hand due north
Attaching a sticker antenna to the back
Using some custom baked firmware
Reading posts from people who claimed they've solved the problem.
Using Bluetooth
Not using Bluetooth
Buying a special case
You can get a femtocell repeater if you are in an office or home where you get little reception but it won't help you on the road or just visiting a friend unless you want to set it up every place you are stationary.
In the end trying to fix the radio design flaw with a firmware update is about as useful as trying to fix a shattered TV screen by adjusting the brightness setting. If you read the radio issues on the Verizon Nexus and the Verizon S3 there are a lot of people claiming they solved it but in the end it still sucks.

I have zero issues with data on my s4 I'm on the east coast running clean rom 1.6.5 solid LTE everywhere..

Unfortunately this is very true, every other VZW Non-Samsung phone I've had hasn't exhibited this issue.

Motorola and Apple have had their share of radio/antenna issues as well.

I'm not really talking about comparing the signals to the iPhone or anything. I'm talking about finding a common denominator for the group of people that are suffering from signal, connectivity or phone loss on the s4.

Trying to tie it all together with a common denominator is a logical fallacy. It would be akin to trying to find a common denominator for everyone in the world that has a chronic cough. The causal factor varies from case to case.

The common denominator is we are on Verizon and have Samsung phones. If you want to go further, you could do a subset intersect and see we have the S4 on Verizon. It's like saying what is a common denominator for those people who have safety issues with the Chevy Corvair. It is a design flaw that only could be fixed by replacing the phone with a different model. Trust me, I went down this path with the Nexus and the S3 - magical firmware updates were dangled by fanboys saying they would come and fix the issue but the firmware updates came but they never fixed the issue.
If you want better signal, you could buy a different phone or get a femtocell repeater. TRUST me, I would love a magic bullet to fix the issue but there isn't one. On the plus side you'll get a ton of helpful posts from people saying they never have issues or you must be doing something wrong.

I dont know what is up with all ur phones, but my signal is much better than my old Galaxy Nexus/RAZR M. I am getting 2-3 more bars of 4G at work. At home it use to be only 3G, but now im getting at least 2 bars of 4G. I don't even turn on my WiFi anymore at home or work.

bars dont really mean much...
i have had some odd issues where i will be in home depot or grocery store trying to look something up and it will fail; market doesnt work, browser doesnt work. phone calls and texts (over gvoice so data) wont work.
the razM i had before this was solid. my GF still has the razrM and we were at grocery store other day and if you went the their app there was a coupon to add and the s4 was refusing all data again.
i had similar issues with an old HTC Dinc2 and it was then i started using an app "restart connections" to get data back but it doesnt fix the issue on the s4 i have. if i reboot the phone data comes back.
i have also twice now went to use gmaps and it it attempts to look up an address for 3-5 min and i finally restart the phone and go back in and find the address ASAP after reboot.
something funky is going on and i havent taken the time to try and look at syslogs yet...
i am running the stock MDK rom (rooted) on VZW

reception is odd

I'm in a difficult reception area in the middle of manhattan. Funny thing is that I almost always have 4G - even in my house. At the same time, I never have more than two bars of signal in my house. I have occasionally had trouble making calls (I think the tower I'm reaching is too busy), but once connected, no one has complained and dropped calls are rare.
I don't understand this and don't know whether to complain or not because although there are almost no bars, there is reception that is pretty good. So I've left well enough alone.

This phone gets decent reception for me. Dropping from 4g to 3g is new for me after coming from an htc rezound though. My rez NEVER dropped 4g in my city anywhere. Guess radios is the one thing htc can do right. My s4 drops to 3g in multiple areas sometimes. Hopefully Samsung keeps getting better with their radios and they'll have me as a customer for more years of they do

This is basically the same issue I have. Only a reboot/data toggle won't fix it. I had two bars(not that it means much, I didn't look at the db) and it kept saying it was communicating with the tower via the green/red up/down indicators, but I couldn't access any data services. I moved my car approximately 500 yards to the south and viola, data again. I don't get why I could make a call, but I couldn't access data.
That being said, it's still better than my Gnex for....well...everything. But I would say worse than my Rezound, Bionic.

i ended up flashing the modem with the ME7 version, while keeping the rest of the ROM on the original MDK. that was about amonth ago and i think ive only had to reboot 1-2 times because of data drop.

[Q] Losing signal on my Amaze 4G

Okay, here is my problem: Every once in a while I will completely lose all signal on my phone. It wont pick up 2G, 4G, nothing. Wifi and bluetooth both seem to work though just fine. I've searched and haven't found anyone with the same issues so I'm wondering if it's just my phone or if nobody has commented on it. I first noticed this about two weeks ago, when my phone refused to find service. I was stuck with the little X next to the signal meter. I figured I was just in an area with poor service and didn't think much of it. An hour later, still, no service. This time I went outside where I know I have good 4G service and nothing for 5 minutes. I enabled airplane mode and disabled it, still nothing. Turned the phone off and back on as a last resort. Still nothing. I ended up finishing the day with wifi calling as that still worked. Sometime later my phone began receiving service again so I thought it was a fluke issue.
Then, just yesterday the same thing happened. This was when I rebooted my phone (which bypasses the fastboot feature) and service was restored right away. I called T-mobile and they said there weren't any network issues in my area and they had never heard of this issue before on the Amaze.
So, this is where I'm asking if anyone has heard of this before. I'm running a stock ROM and it hasn't been rooted. Thanks for any comments!
This might help just a touch. I do live in an area with decent service but my couch and bedroom are deadzones for some odd reason. I bought these signal boosters for 2 bucks figuring "what the hell, I'll give it a shot". No more dead zones, and data went from E to G. Not a miracle worker but for a couple bucks it keeps a signal at least.

Wireless Coverage
I have 2 brand new Amaze 4G for a few months now and had no problem with the coverage. I know the coverage is good with full signal bars and have not found any issue with coverage.
Sometimes, different phones have different received signal sensitivity. Also depends on user behavior. If you are always using a handsfree device (cable or BT) and your phone is in a bag, then your coverage is reduced by your action. The best coverage you can ever get is when you have line of sight (unobstructed) to the cell towers.
There are a few issues with your problem:
1-Poor inbuilding coverage
2-Poor coverage in your area
3-Network optimization issue
4-Hardware issue
If you are going from 1 bar to no bar, then most likely you have coverage issue. You lost signal since the level is already very low.
If you are going from full bar to no bar, you might have hardware or network optimization issue. Try your phone is the city or area with known good coverage first. If the behavior persists, then you have phone problem.
I used to manage wireless network for carriers.
same issue
I've had the exact same thing happen to me. Red x, no signal except wifi, in places where signal is not normally an issue. Battery pull doesn't work, return to signal seems arbitrary. Had the same thing happen with my Desire. I have no answers, but you are not alone.
Yup, it happened with my first Amaze. I got it back in January and started playing with it - rooting, custom ROMs, etc. Then later that day, the signal just died on me. I thought I must've screwed something up, so I flashed back to everything stock. No luck. I waited for half a day, then it randomly started working again at night.
You probably noticed tha tI said that happened with my first amaze. That's because after that signal issue, I discovered that my camera stopped working. I returned it to T-Mobile and they sent me another one. This one is working great though.
Well thank you for all the input so far. Id like to say that this isn't my first cell phone and I'm not new to weak or poor signal areas, especially from T-mobile. I was using my phone at work at the time, which has anywhere from no signal to 3 bars depending on where you are. This wasn't one of the cases that I was standing in a dead zone when I checked my phone. I had no signal for several hours, including over 30 minutes of standing outside trying everything I could think of. I have had excellent signal outside in the past, exactly where I was "Hiding". I got the Amaze because I was tired of playing with my old HD2 and having to work around bugs and possibly not receiving calls. So far, I'm not happy that the radio seems to quit responding all together and leaves me without a phone (minus the wifi calling but I'm not always around a hotspot).
I also experienced a dramatic signal loss at home, going from full signal strength to maybe one bar right around the time that I first had issues. I don't know if this is related or if this is a completely different thing.
I am 99% sure this is an error with the phone - probably software related with the radio driver(s) or radio firmware. I guess I will try taking it back to T-mobile and seeing if they could exchange it for a new one. I was just really wanting to avoid that as I finally got my phone setup how I like it. Again, Thank you for the input and let me know if you are having the same problem or if you know of a solution.
I am on my third Amaze and also tried a Galaxy SII X due to the same problem at my home. Even the Samsung did the same thing. In my house and especially in the driveway, the signal varies wildly between -85dbm to as low as -111dbm. The frustrating thing is once it loses the signal, it doesn't seem to reacquire it without a reboot.
I'm with Telus, and they said they will check on it, but I'm not holding my breath. In my immediate area, outside my house, the signal isn't great, but it will usually hang on. I have been to different cities, and all has been well with it. Coming from a rock steady 2G Touch Pro II, I am disappointed as well..
I am new here to this site, but I am having a similar problem with my Amaze. At work I always have a weak 4G signal, but the last few days it has been gone altogether. I have full phone service (4 bars) but no data. The 4G indicates I have signal, but I can't connect to anything on the web. I called HTC and they had me pull my battery and sim card so they could send a "reset signal" to my phone. After my phone came back up I had faster service than ever, but it only lasted a few minutes and went away again. I am thinking this is a phone issue. Oh, the Amaze is my first Android. My only previous smartphone was my Nokia E71x.
I know if I have WiFi calling selected, an x will show up on my signal if i turn WiFi on. I've personally only had slow data in the area I work. I blame it on the fact that it is a busy corporate park with lots of hotels, cuz my signal is fine elsewhere. Try calling tmobile and seeing if they have known tower issues in your area. I know I had that problem with sprint and they sent me a free airave. Maybe tmobile could do something similar if its.a known problem.

It's most likely a network issue. I get the same thing, it will timeout/refresh the network where it will not get a signal for about 30 seconds a few times per day. I blame the network, since the same thing happened to me with my mt4g

Thank you! This fixed it for me. It was happening only today while I had WiFi enabled, it would turn the mobile radio off completely and the box would be grayed out so I was unable to turn it back on. I had my sim updated today to enable wifi calling so after I read your post, I turned the wifi calling off and the mobile radio signal came back immediately. Strange bug.

I was told It's by design. It saved battery life by not constantly searching for a mobile network it won't use (due to wifi calling). It's not like you can hand off the call to the local network. I do notice that if i start walking outside, once my wifi hits a low signal it logs back on the network.

There is actually an option to specify how the WIFI calling works: either all the time or only when cellular signal is gone. Sounds like you have it set to be on all the time. This means that if you have a good WIFI connection, the cellular radio is shut off and all traffic goes through the WIFI calling app. The other option (which I use) only uses wifi calling when there is no cellular signal.
I have lost cellular signal 3 additional times since my last post. Its not just that I'm in a bad spot and I have no signal for 30 seconds. This goes on for 30 minutes or more - up to several hours. I have found that rebooting the phone fixes it as I believe it completely (as much as possible) removes power from the radio and requires it to be completely re-initiated during the reboot. Simply shutting it off doesn't work as the quickboot is enabled and most likely doesn't perform a complete re-initialization of the radio. My only guess at this point is that there is some kind of possible leftover code from development which never was removed from the radio (this happens more times than not). It could be a timeout or simply causing the radio to hang because of 1. excessive heat generation, 2. excessive power drain, 3. buffer overflow, 4. excessive RF transmit power... In any case, one of those issues could trigger an event in the radio to cause it to simply stop responding.
I am in the process of trying to get T-Mobile to get me a new phone as I am outside of the 30-day window. I have also confirmed it with them that this was not a tower issue.
Thanks

Shoot, I see senior members start new threads or pointless threads without searching first, so good job haha.
Ok, back on topic now, if it's only dropping when you go in your room, then I don't think it's anything wrong with the phone. Not sure who your provider is, but u may be able to call them and have them look up your address and tell you what kind of signal u should get outside your house, and what to expect inside your house. I know t-mobile does at least

Well your situation is a little different than other peoples in this thread if u can't connect al all. Ok wait so first off, it won't connect to a network at all? AND you only paid 50 bucks for it...? Sounds a little fishy to me bud, why did he say he was selling it...?
Next thing, I don't know why a t-mo rep would tell you to root the phone, rooting has no effect on your signal strength or your ability to connect to a network.
And lastly, is the phone a T-Mobile branded amaze owhat carrierr...? and will it not connect at all, period, or can u make calls just not data...?

[Q] Thunderbolt Radio? Signal Issues

tl;dr - TB is losing connectivity, almost no 4G, do I flash new radio? Which one? (post sounds less ignorant)
Out of nowhere I started to experience some really crippling internet & data issues. To be fair, I'm running CM7.1.1 which says that it has some known data issues, but I think these are a bit much.
I started to lose 4G connectivity completely - the symbol will show up on the screen, but just won't connect to anything. If I change the network mode to CDMA / EvDo it usually will pick up 3G at OK speeds, and will usually have 2-3 bars for regular cell coverage. 3G will work in and out, in for the most part. 4G I have managed to get up for about an hour, and now I can't get it at all.
Previously, I had a few disconnect issues but I'd reboot and everything would fix up quickly. I've done about 15-20 reboots in the past three days to no avail.
I figured that it might have something to do with radios... I spent a solid half hour or so researching flashing RUU's (how to, problems, etc.) and there is a LOT of conflicting information. Would flashing a new RUU help my issue? I think that it might... I'm currently on baseband 1.39.00.0627r (From the 1.70.605.0 RUU), and the latest is MUCH more recent.
I'd love some help / advice with if I should flash a new radio, which one, and if there is anything beyond the regular flashing / warnings that I need to worry about. Also, should I flash both LTE & CDMA separately? The names of the zip files are the same...one at a time? probably a noob question?
Hope this wasn't a repost of something, but I did a search first and couldn't see anything quite the same as this. Googled as well.
Cheers
Try ThunderShed it is much more up to date than the version you're running.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
Thanks! If I flash a new radio is it going to wipe the device anyway? I wouldn't mind keeping my current setup, but if it's going to wipe there's no reason NOT to just upgrade to ThunderShed.
No. Try the radio that came with the newest ota. That's the one I'm using and it is working well.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
Those didn't help much at all... I'm just going to flash ThunderShed and I'll bet anything I'm going to have better luck with that!
Exact samething started to happen with me except I'm running liquid gingerbread 3.2. Out of nowhere. My wife's thunderbolt gets great 4g connection but mine only 3g. I flashed latest radio but no dice. Wonder what's going on. I'm about to reset.

I've had the same problem twice before.
First off, I normally use only around 4GB of data a month, except during months that I have to travel. I never, ever tether (too risky).
In December 2011, I went to go visit some family over the Christmas/New Year's break. They rarely use the internet, so they opted for a cheap dialup home connection. Luckily for me though, the area was covered by LTE. In order to keep myself occupied, I streamed some Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, and other videos to my phone. After around 20GB of usage, 4G and 3G just died. Despite me changing around from CDMA Only to CDMA Only (PRL) to LTE, I was only able to pick up 1x. Flashing new radios didn't fix it, flashing new ROMs didn't fix it, leaving the battery out overnight didn't fix it, travelling an hour away to another family member's house (different tower) didn't fix it, getting a new SIM card didn't fix it, getting escalated to Tier 3 support didn't fix it, completely formatting the phone and installing official RUUs didn't fix it. I spent about a week trying to diagnose the problem, and was about to just use my insurance to get a replacement. Put my phone in the charger one night, went to bed, woke up, and 4G and 3G were back, about exactly 7 days after it first went down. Very odd, but I just chalked it up to a system glitch.
However, the same thing happened again in May 2012. Again, I visited my family and watched videos streamed to my phone to keep me occupied. About 10GB into the month, I had to leave for a trip to the other side of the country. While there, I had some downtime a couple of evenings to watch some movies. At 15GB, a similar thing happened. I was unable to connect to 4G, but 3G (albeit terrible connection) and 1x (faster and more reliable than 3G actually) worked fine. I thought that maybe the tower I was connected to was just experimenting with 4G before officially flipping the switch. However, no matter where I went, I was still restricted to 3G and 1x. After a 2000 mile flight back home, I was still restricted to terrible 3G and 1x. Again, after about a week, the problem went away and I was able to get on 4G again.
So, either my phone gets finicky when I have a lot of data usage, or Verizon likes to temp. ban 4G users who use lots of data in a short period of time.
You, my friend, were being throttled. That is exactly what happens when you get throttled.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
My data usage was less if anything. You sound like you were getting throttled, I wasn't... mine are just obnoxious connectivity issues.
I flashed (and am still working on) Thundershed now, it's a beautiful ROM - I'd recommend to anyone running CM7.1.1 on TB to just switch over... it's the same thing (base CM9) and you get ICS as well which seems to have increased the performance anyway.
There were other annoying bugs with the TB build of CM7.1.1 such as the inability to have headphones in the phone while talking (people just couldn't hear you) and some weird proximity sensor issues on phone calls.
Hopefully this new ROM is going to take care of the issues that previously annoyed me... the TB is a great phone and I'm glad I'm going to be able to get the most out of it now.
Thanks for the tip off to that ROM, disconecktie!
Yea its a fantastic rom. I ran sheds stuff on the Eris for around 2 years and if it wasn't for him that device would have died quick.

He's a great dev but you wont see him on xda. People over here pissed him off. I didn't like 1.5 much but the fixes he brought to 1.6 made this rom awesome again.

As far as ur radio issue I was having the exact same problem yesterday and I live in the southern California area. My girl was perfect 3g on her dinc, I couldn't get any data at all and when I did, only 3g. Killed my battery quick too cuz it kept having to reconnect. Quite annoying, seems to b better today tho. Could of been just an off day. It was weird too cuz i finally shelled out for a rezound battery and that was my first day experience. Lol I thought it was the battery till today when its been solid all day. Running gsb 3.3b btw with imos kernel.

.19 radios
I'm running Thundershed 1.6 w/ imo lean 184 6.2.1 using the .19 radios and other than having the GSM and LTE options ALL available to choose from, I'm having no issues at all. The 605.9 radios are very stable too. Hope this helps!
I suspect Verizon was working on the network for the past week or so. I had issues too, nothing big and I saw a few posts on AC where people had issues too. It seems to have resolved itself now.
I am in southern Cali too having the.same issue 4G goes in and out, 3g is solid I don't think I am near anywhere 4gigs...

similar problem
Hello all. First post. I'm a noob. Watched the video.
I see this post is 3 months old.
I'm having similar issues at home in Tyler, TX (we have 4G). One day my Verizon thunderbolt signal drops to 1X or nothing at all as far as data. This happens for several days. Verizon creates a ticket and calls me 2 days later to tell me it's not them. I travel to northern Kentucky (cincinnati area) to visit my son. Issue follows me to Kentucky. I root phone but am still using stock rom b/c I don't have a clue what I'm doing!
I travel to Dallas and my phone is healed. Blazingly fast. I can't keep up with it - it's so awesome. I decide I like this piece of crap after 1 year of hating it.
I travel home to Tyler today. I'm back to 1X or nothing at all.
Questions: So do I flash a rom with a different radio??? Is that how I can get a better signal? Scared straight b/c I have an E-key app that I use to get me into homes (home inspector) and I can't afford to have that app not work.
Thanks in advance

I live in overton tx and I don't have that problem. Maybe try getting a new sim. You may also check to make sure the golden tabs on the back of your phone are in good shape and make contact with the gold pads on the battery cover.

At my wit's end... do any of these phones actually work?

So I've had my new EVO 4G LTE all of about two weeks and have had nothing but troubles with it. I'm currently on the 5th phone (replaced 4 times since the first) and its still got the same wifi / 3g issues that caused me to replace it twice which have both the wifi and the 3g disconnecting for no reason whatsoever and when the 3g works, I get speeds slower than the oldest 14.4k modems unless I'm within about 100 yards of a cell tower. The other two times I had to exchange it because there was dust under the phone's screen.
Because of the connectivity issues, the phone is almost useless to me unless I don't plan on using data at all, or if I'm sitting by a wifi router and don't plan on using that connection for more than 10 minutes continuously. I've tried the 2.4GHz fix, the turning off LTE fix, and even given it a static IP at home.. all without any change in performance. I'm really at my wit's end and would have already exchanged it for a 6th phone if I thought there would be a reasonable expectation that the new one would work correctly.
Is there any other fixes out there that I have yet to try? Do any of the rooted OS's have a newer / better modem that will fix my problem? Should I just return the thing again and switch to a different manufacturer? I chose to get the Evo rather than wait for the Galaxy S3 because I never liked my old Epic, but I'm starting to think that this was a massive mistake...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Are you sure your router isn't acting up? And where you live might be a testing area for LTE? That would cause network issues.
The last thing is-have you removed your back cover to install am SD Card? That cover needs to be on securely as I believe that is the antenna

Oh, I assume you have done PRL update and profile updates? There are 2 ways to do that. Settings/Updates/PRL and Profile.
Also dial *2 and you can do PRL and Profile updates there you. The *2 also runs a data and voice test, you will see green, or red, check marks.

I haven't had any problems. I actually receive awesome 3g service (not so much indoors) the EVO connects to my wireless N router flawlessly. I think your automatic disconnection issues is due to htcsmartsync. It's designed to shut off services (like airplane mode) in order to keep the phone in a deep sleep.
I would suggest rooting your phone and deleting the code from your phone. Can work wonders ?
I wouldnt suggest unlocking your bootloader to flash Roms though..reason being, if htcsync isnt the culprit. I don't want you to have a tampered phone and not being able to return it....goodluck. ill post links in a bit

I feel your pain, I have two and both have similar issues. I have tried different roms and get the same issues. My EVO 3D was faster than this phone and I think it may be do to some issue in the firmware. I am just riding it out. I personally am surprised more users have not come forward. My biggest complaint is the lag on the device. I can flash a clean rom install, or flash over an existing base and it is faster, but then lags out and is dreadfully slow after just a few hours.
What type of encryption are you using on the router tkip, aes, wep? Is it wireless n or g?
Plenty of these phones work. My WiFi and 3G work flawlessly, and I haven't had to exchange once.
I was having similar issues with my 3G randomly dropping out, but never any problem with my wifi. I updated profile and PRL last week, flashed a ROM with SmartSync disabled, and haven't had a problem since.

i've never had problems with the device and i find it very strange that you have had problems with 5 devices. perhaps its not the phone but you that is the issue, or your hardware at home or maybe your house in in a Faraday cage or something. either way..
No issues here.
3G speeds and coverage are awesome around my work, on the way to work and at home. Also the WiFi is faster than my darn desktop, with the wireless N.

I'm fairly sure it isn't the router since the phone is behaving the same way on my school's wifi and the one at the starbucks near my house. Also, I have other devices connected to my router at the same time as the Evo and none of them are experiencing the same issues.
I am willing to accept that there is a possibility the some or all of my 3G issues are related to the network upgrade, but I'm experiencing the extremely slow speeds over most of the city of Denver, and I'm guessing it would be unlikely that they would be upgrading 75% of the towers in the city at the same time. It also doesn't really explain the 3G service just shutting off randomly and then popping back on a few seconds later. That all being said, even if it is network issues, it just serves to highlight the lack of a reliable wifi connection.
As far as the back panel is concerned, I did install a micro-sd card there, and, since reading your post, I have removed it, blown off and dust / debris that might have gotten in there, and reseated it as snugly as possible. This didn't generate any sort of fix for the 3G issues, though I've not had a chance to test if wifi is working any better now. I did notice however that some of the gold filaments were discolored, so perhaps there is a manufacturing defect, though I'm not sure how the color of the filament could affect its conductivity.

I have done about 7 PRL / profile updates on this particular phone. I have also done a couple factory data hard resets through the boot screen in the hopes that it was just "glitching". Though the resets seemed to help, the effect didn't last, and none of the PRL / profile updates did anything to improve performance.
I did have a look at the *2 screen you mentioned and found that both voice and data had green checks by them, but I think this is only a check to determine if the connection exists at all and has nothing to do with quality. I do remember hearing about another testing screen you can get to through the dialer by pressing a sequence of characters which gives you access to a much more in-depth set of tests, but searching hasn't produced anything on that, at least with my search terms. That being said, I took a previous phone with the same issues into the sprint store and they told me it passed all of their diagnostic tests, so I'm not sure it would tell me anything different.

Sounds like an interesting possibility, though my wifi / 3g turn off while in direct, phone is awake and I'm using the program thats using the connection, use. I'll have to read about htcsync to see if its able to shut down connection while in use. While I'm not opposed to rooting my phone (I've resisted the urge to do it now because I really don't want to have troubles with returning it), I really don't like the idea that I might not be able to fix this problem without doing it...

Luckily, mine doesn't seem to suffer from lag at all, just a really horrible connection. From what I've heard at best buy and sprint though, a huge number of people are having similar issues with this phone. The people at best buy even went so far as to try and tell me this was a "known issue" and therefore wouldn't be exchanging it again (this was the third time), to which I had to reply that I would then like a full refund and would be taking my business elsewhere. The way I see it, if a phone has a known issue, but not all of the phones are affected by it, you have to keep replacing it until I get one without the issue.

I've thought about that possibility for sure, but the slow speeds and intermittent connections for 3g and wifi go, and have gone for all of the devices with this problem (don't forget, two of them were returned because they had dust under the phone's screen), all over the city with me, so, unless I'm a walking cell disrupter, then I think the issue lies somewhere in the phone.

I would think that this would have surfaced a long time ago were it really the case though, as this is the first phone I've ever owned which has had this much trouble with connectivity.
1st thing....I havent checked but isn't the smith.apk still included? 2ndly I had issues with this phone dropping secured connections from afar and found it to be interference witht he witless signal so try changing your frequency....that solved my issues....no lags here. Remember these new phones are designed to drop 3g when possible to help conserve battery.

From what I can tell, and I may be wrong on this of course, smith.apk is a logger and not a throttler as people initially thought. Its something I'd probably ensure was removed from any custom OS I install, but its apparently not something that would affect connections at all. That being said, I'm curious just how this "Mobile Network Director" is supposed to know when I need my data connection, but that seems to be on the network side and not on the phone.
I'll have to check into the frequency thing. I remember a long time ago I had to mess with my previous router's channel because it was interfering with my wireless mouse for some reason, but I've not had any similar problems with the new router in the last four years, until now potentially I guess.
As for the 3G turning off when possible to save battery or network bandwidth, I can understand that concept, but it would have to be very broken to shut off any network with a good signal while its actually in use.

I thought it was smith but maybe its the other thing you mentioned but they recently started adding that software to dump people from 3g to 1x to avoid congestion and it was actually installed on the phone itself. I had no issues with WiFi until the ICS stuff started coming out....I had the issue on the 3D and the LTE....the 2 phones didn't seem to like dual encryption especially from afar so I changed the encryption still had issues except for open then I tried changing the channel and that held.

A lot of misconceptions about that smith apk here.....
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I saw in another thread that you had your Epic replaced 5 times in 2 years. Now you are on your 5th Evo? So you have basically had 10 phones in the past 2 years? Have the last EVOs beet rooted at all, or are they completely untouched as far as things like the build.prop goes? Could there be a particular app that you are installing on all those phones that could be causing your issue? If you truly have had 10 bad phones in the past 2 years, then do not buy any lottery tickets!
My Evo doesn't drop Wifi at all. It does drop 3G, but only when I am in an area where I get one bar. Make sure Best Wi-fi performance is unchecked in the Advanced Wi-Fi settings, and in Wi-Fi frequency Band, try changing it to 2.4 only.

VZW Support Question(s)

Can someone explain to me the customer service levels at Verizon? I've been dealing with 4G data connection problems since the beginning of June. I decide to finally create a support ticket on July 3rd and again on July 11th (the first ticket was marked completed).
Every time I contact support for an update, they proceed to go through the same basic troubleshooting steps even though I gave them my case number already. Then they go through the "We're sorry for your ...." script and politely tell me that the network team is looking into it and it will be 3 to 5 days.
So, where to I go from here? I've contacted 6 different CS reps because no one previously followed up with me. Who or what is higher up than the network team?
The short term solution today was activate my old Incredible....aarrgh! My frustration level is at it's peak. Do I have any other choices besides wait and cross my fingers?

Why can't you just use CDMA (3g) only on your Rezound? I have 4g turned off on my Rezound to save battery. Or are you having issues with both 3g and 4g?

I can use 3g, but that isn't why I bought the Rezound. My specific issue with 4g is that it drops completely and randomly when using various apps that have GPS enabled (Facebook, G+, Foursquare, etc...). Shouldn't 4g drop to 3g or 1x if 4g isn't available? Since I'm waiting for Verizon anyway, I'll change it to see if it helps.
The messed up part is that the exact same thing is happening to my wife's Rezound too. We bought them together a few months ago and for the 1st month everything worked great! Verizon confirmed that we live in a 4g area so that isn't the problem.
it is the software radio on the phone. You probably live in a low signal level area. The phone is constantly trying to decide if it should be in 3g or 4g. You should root and try different radios. Calling CS is about useless in my opinion
Mine does the same exact thing, it's definitely frustrating. It used to switch to 3g just fine, but it doesn't anymore. How is it a software issue if it worked fine before? I didn't change anything, I even did a factory reset.
Set your phone to LTE, CDMA or LTE w/voice under phone settings

My thunderbolt did this, my girlfriends rezound does it, and my rezound does it but not as often or I don't notice. I'm on viperRez s-on and 2.11 boot and I haven't noticed it however when my rezound was stock I noticed it.
I think it's an issue with Verizon. They sent me a new thunderbolt and sim card and I still had the same issue.

Its supposed to go from 4g to 3g if there is no 4g signal. I have no use for 4g as I'm on wifi 90% of the time so I turned it off. Since both your phones do it I would say its a signal issue from the tower and not a phone issue. Verizon's LTE network has had some issues and all the bugs aren't worked out yet. Personally I would rather use the Rezound in CDMA only mode than the Incredible, its just an all around better phone.
This happens to me too (I'm completely stock) and it's really bothering me now. I went in to Verizon and they have me a new SIM last weekend but that didn't fix it. I know it's the phone cuz I'll be at work, home, wherever i know for a fact i have 4g. Doesn't drop to 3g, just cuts in and out. and it happens randomly (or so I thought ) but GPS activity does likely because I JUST did a hard reset after calling VZW yesterday and had no problems until I opened up Google maps.
I keep holding out for ICS hoping that'll fix it.
Side note: when I asked the rep about a release date, she said she couldn't find anything on the rezound!

Thanks for all the support and suggestions! For what it's worth, I'm completely stock and have done a factory reset twice. The thing that I haven't tried is to replace the SIM. I know that is a hit-or-miss solution, but at least I'll be able to cross that off my list when the CS rep calls back.....
The only other thing (I think) I can do is unlock/root/load an ICS ROM and hope that it fixes the 4g issue. I'm assuming a different radio is included with the ROM.
Thanks again...
I have a similar issue. My rezound is completely stock and worked fantastic when I first got it. I live in a high signal 4G area, and get 4-5 bars at all times. Since the beginning of June, my 4G just goes off randomly. Sometimes repeatedly to where its annoying and I put my phone back in my pocket. My phone has never switched from 4G to 3G, its just 4G 4-5 bars to nothing with 4-5 bars. I'd say if i'm using my phone, it happens 30+ times or more a day. Doesn't matter where in town I am. I've contacted verizon on several occasions (I know, a dead end road) and they told me there are no service interruptions in my area and they would call me back (of course, they didn't call me back). I consistently get 30-40Mbps on speedtest wherever I am. If i'm in the basement of my home in a certain spot, it drops to maybe 12-15Mbps.
Its been rather frustrating since I can barely use my phone when it acts up like this. Hoping the new OTA fixes the radios - then I'll probably dabble with CM9 (or 10 if its out by then). But until then, i'll just stay frustrated.

Thanks, but I'm currently speaking to tier 2. In the realm of support, I'm not doubting they have skills, but I'm curious as to where my problem goes next. The 5 tier 2 reps have gone through the basics each time I called. The key words are, " I called". I would assume that notes would be made so everyone was on the same page for support.
So they all have told me that they were waiting for the network guys to give them an update. I think that means I got put into a large queue and they will get to me when they get to me.

Update: This morning my Tier 2 rep said that the network team updated the trouble ticket. They have tested all of the towers in my area and everything looks good (of course). They also have added my ticket to a parent ticket that is being sent to HTC, because this is a known problem with some Rezound phones. Being pessimistic, I really think smoke is being blown up my **** but what am I going to do?! Pointing fingers usually goes nowhere.....
Per my Rep., my options are to wait for an HTC software update or they will replace the phones with another "like new" Rezound. The like new part freaks me out after reading all the messed-up-phones-sent-back posts from our forums, but there might be a chance that a replacement fixes the problem. Should I wait it out or get the replacement?

they should really implement fastdormancy for 4G LTE because on 3G, theres a power state called CELL&URA_pch which doesn't use any data but it is able to keep a connection to the network.
I was also told there will be a software update to fix the 4G dropping issues and I was told that verizon is aware of the problem, and so is HTC. If its the same thing that was on the ICS leak, are the people running ICS leaks or roms based on these leaks having the same reception issues? I've been curious about this but rarely get on to post, i'm guilty of lurking.

Generally speaking this seems to very much be a software issue and unless it's truly a defective device I doubt getting a replacement would fix it. Here's what you do:
1. Flash the latest ICS RUU that leaked for the Rezound, NO you can't go back to the old firmware/software without a lot of work but it doesn't matter if you end up getting it replaced anways
2. Set up everything again and see how it goes
3. If you still have an issue, get the replacement
IF that doesn't fix the issue, your not unlocked, your not S-OFF, so your warranty still stands. It's not like your "NEW" device was doing very well anyways so I wouldn't let a replacement device bother you. I didn't read this whole thread but hopefully I'm not the first person to re-iterate this- "NEW" is just a matter of documentation and the fact that a product is new doesn't mean it's better or will work better than a refurbished device. I personally have had several refurbished devices over the years that worked just fine...much better then the new ones did.

[Q] General WiFi Issues (Not Using DLink)

Hi All-
Pre-TL;DR: Got rooted S4. NOT USING A DLINK ROUTER. All wifi networks disappear and reappear 'randomly'.
So I got my S4 from Verizon on Friday the 24th. I set it up and went on my way. About two days after I got it I noticed 'slow' download while on the wifi. Didn't matter what I was doing; google play, downloading a game's extra data, or even just sitting there doing nothing. As I looked into it I found that my wifi connection was dropping. I'm not talking about disconnect and reconnect, but wifi in general would drop. I verified this while sitting in my living room. I live in an apartment and there are a lot of neighbors with wifi. While looking at the available wifi networks I noticed every few seconds ALL of the available networks would disappear (showing only my saved networks). I used a wifi analyzer and changed my wifi channel to an unused channel, checked for firmware updates (both router and phone), but nothing changed. On Tuesday I started work after the holidays and decided to test the wifi on my companies guest wifi. I was seeing the same stuff happening at work. I don't think it's my router(s) because all wifi goes away, not just the specific wireless network. I have the stock S4 that has been rooted using open1your1eyes0's guide
[GUIDE] Root for Verizon Galaxy S4 ***Updated 5/27 - 2:30 AM***, however I noticed this before I rooted it. Is anyone else having this problem? I'm about to take it to Verizon on Thursday.
Phone: Galaxy S4
Carrier: Verizon
Model: SCH-I545
Android: 4.2.2
Kernel: 3.4.0-562219
I experienced this problem on Saturday when I got the phone-Called Verizon and was transferred to Samsung-they told me this is a known issue in the phone and it will require an antenna swap to fix. Apparently they have fixed the phones they are manufacturing now, however the ones which were initially released all have this problem.
Vzw has been no help at all in resolving this, and pretty much have told me "too bad, so sad". Really crappy of them.

Nghthawk and Fleury, I was so happy to see your posts!!! So it's not just a firmware issue!!!
I have a non-rooted S4 and have the same experience. I was with T-Mobile for a week before I transferred to Verizon and had the exact issue there. (I have a co-worker who has a Sprint S4 that doesn't have this problem.) I have this issue both on my home router (Linksys) and at work (Motorola). Previously, I had an S2 and never saw this issue once, neither at home nor at work. I also spoke to Verizon who told me to talk to Samsung. Samsung (via email) has had me try all kinds of crazy manual WiFi settings - none of which work - or are at all practical...
I'm still within my first 14 days of signing with Verizon, so I can still jump ship to get rid of this phone. I'd really rather not spend another __ hours setting up another one, though.
Perhaps you could help me with a bunch of questions I have - please... I really need help with this...
1. Who told you that the antenna needs to be replaced - Samsung or Verizon?
2. Is that documented somewhere that you know of?
3. Is either Verizon or Samsung going to cover the antenna swap?
4. Who / when is supposed to do that for you?
5. What do you suggest I do in my situation (e.g. being within the first 14 days)?
6. If it's an antenna issue, would that affect voice calls (quality / dropping), as well?
Thanks so much!
Eliezer
I will try to answer your questions as best as I can...
1. Who told you that the antenna needs to be replaced - Samsung or Verizon?-Samsung repair rep
2. Is that documented somewhere that you know of?-I'm sure Samsung has it in writing, Verizon is still in denial-having talked to their executive offices today-to which they are clueless and a waste of time
3. Is either Verizon or Samsung going to cover the antenna swap? Yes!
4. Who / when is supposed to do that for you? Samsung told me to send it now, however I am traveling and can't do that at the moment
5. What do you suggest I do in my situation (e.g. being within the first 14 days)? I would keep the phone, they will get it fixed, they don't really have a choice, approx sales are around 80 million units-they can't just ignore it-plus we are going to be the first to get aws spectrum...
6. If it's an antenna issue, would that affect voice calls (quality / dropping), as well? I have no problems with call quality, in fact, it is far better than my Galaxy Nexus which I traded in to get this. I have had 4G also act up to where it just freezes and fails to deliver internet, even though I will show 3-4 bars as well as the 4G lit up....So I believe it seems to only effect data.

It would be useful for those of us still on the sidelines if we can determine if we are getting a fixed version or one with this problem still.
This is one of the reasons I didn't jump in yet - to wait out any early production issues. Well, and still hoping for a 32 or 64gb version.
Interesting. I have a lot of the same issues. My WiFi is so bad I can't see any other WiFi networks on my device from my house where my other devices see 5 to 6. If I go into my daughters room my WiFi pretty much drops completely every time.
I just got off the phone with Samsung tier two / advanced tech support. He told me that my phone was manufactured May 15th... If a two week old phone has the problem, I cannot imagine the "new" ones don't also... He said they have no known issues submitted by Verizon for WiFi connectivity of the S4. Due the fact that it can connect to WiFi, he didn't think it sounded like a hardware issue. He suggested testing by taking the password off my router and seeing how it holds the signal. He said if it was able to maintain a connection like that, it must either be the router firmware or phone software issue.
Verizon said they could swap it with a new one for me - but there's no guarantee (or reason to think) that the same thing won't happen with that new one. And the option of sending it to Samsung and not having it for 11-12 business days isn't very appealing, either...
Not so happy about this...
Eliezer
you do know that the WiFi isse with DLink routers (DIR-655 and DIR-855) is not restricted to only those routers right? It does exist with other brand routers from whats been written about it.
Point being i have a DIR-655 router and had the connect drop connect drop issue and all I did was uncheck the WMM option and rebooted my router and its rock solid. WMM is kind of pointless, 95% of ppl can't even see a difference using it. I don't even think any of the public access points i've run into even have that enabled either.
If it's just your home wifi your having an issue with, turn off WMM in the router settings if you haven't already
Any updates about this? I'm experiencing wifi issues with my S4 where the signal I get on wifi is just horrible. Finally went into work today where we have an open wifi network on the entire campus, and I can't even get 2 bars of wifi from my desk, where my Galaxy Nexus would get 4. When it does connect, it's horribly slow. This has got to be a hardware issue. I may bring it back to Verizon, but I'm wondering if they will even believe me and swap the device.
Well, since I originally posted on this thread - and had commented that I saw this issue on both Verizon and T-Mobile - using both Motorola and Linksys routers --- I've switched to AT&T. I got one of their S4s and have had rock-solid WiFi connectivity with those same two routers ever since...
Not sure what to say...
I experienced my WiFi dropping like that once... how ever.. never again... really weird.. I have better Wifi then I did on my last phone.

Which carrier are you on?
Just compared to my friend's S4. With the two S4's sitting next to each other on my desk, he gets 4 bars of wifi at -46 dbm in Network Signal Info. I get 1 bar, and -88dbm! I walked directly the nearest ceiling mounted access point and my signal went up to -71dbm while he went to -40. So yea I definitely have some issues.

Are you able to change the title of this thread to include "Samsung Verified Issue" or something to that effect so that it will be more noticeable for others?

Not from what I can tell. I can edit the post, but I think a mod has to edit the title.
Update tho to my op:
After a factory reset and a re-root I noticed that this issue had stopped. It happened one more time after that, however, after a reboot it was fine again. I have yet to run into the problem again. This leads me to believe that there is a software issue (would also make sense why only Verizon phones seem to be affected) and not a hardware issue. I heard that google is going to release a 'clean' version of the S4 rom when they launch their carrier-less S4. I may just wait till that phone is released and flash that and see what happens.
I'm flashing mine to stock and doing a factory reset right now. Hoping it fixes the issue for now.

I wanted to add my own experience. I have a Verizon Galaxy S4 -- SCH-I545. I managed to fix the disconnection problem by using a static IP address on the phone side since the work router serves up the same one to my device every time, so I'm not causing collisions (and I don't have control of the router at work). I was getting 'failed to get IP address' messages when the connection dropped. See here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=42172004&postcount=29
However, reading other posts about the antenna issue, I'm starting to think that it might just be that. I'm about 20 feet equidistant from 2 wireless routers at work, and using the *#197328640 hidden menu, then Menu button, then WiFi, my RSSI goes from -68 to -74 and goes up to about -52 to -55 when I'm about 3 feet from the AP I'm associated with. Does that seem low? According to what I've googled it seems like it is low...
---
And to think I was about to give up on contacting Samsung because they refused to acknowledge my Bluetooth issue here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2304828
With the BT issue I've done extensive troubleshooting and pretty sure it's not a software issue (at least not other apk's interfering) but possibly the bluetooth implementation or drivers itself.
:sigh: Now I'm going to have to test with the other S4 to see I get the same WiFi signal strength, at least at home, anyway.
So update for me, took mine to Verizon and they swapped it out. This one gets a great wifi signal.

Judging by your earlier numbers mine is fine. I compared it to an S3 and another Verizon S4 and both have about the same RSSI +/ 5 of each other at the same point at home... so the issue I'm facing is probably just related to the router at work I have no control over.
