Design defect & call quality - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Received my N3 today. Unboxed it, removed the back, and inserted the battery. I then went online and read too many posts to count stating that the call quality is horrible and that Samsung is considering a recall. That was enough for me. I called Sprint and they reluctantly agreed to send me a return kit. Terrible. So, I packed it up and then noticed something on the floor. The stupid little plastic camera guard had fallen off the phone when I removed the back, and one of the stupid itty bitty feet had broken off. I put it back in the best I could. It's Sprint's problem now.
I'm a phone geek, but I don't think I want this phone. That plastic poc will break constantly.
Maybe the S5?

Can you link me to some of the recall stuff?

Every manufacturer has product defects, consider yourself unlucky.
I bought my Note 3 directly from a Sprint Retailer, went in and said "I'm a developer, don't **** me around" and I spent an extra hour in the store configuring my device and testing its functionality before I purchased it. Your dollar is your vote. Make it count.

How would be my life if I return every single item I own because I heard others saying bad things or complaining about it? Maybe I could living under a rock right now.
But seriously man, that is bad luck. Mine is flawless so far. I hope it stays that way, knock on wood Justin case.

Mine has been fine so far. I have had a few call issues here and there but it's not constant and not something that makes my phone unusable like some people have stated so I honestly don't think that part of it is the phone itself or Sprint. I personally think it's software related. This is a whole new device for Sprint as far as Samsung goes as well as a new OS too. Things are way different than previous Samsung devices. Not even the S4 shipped with 4.3. In a nutshell I have no complaints here and now that I am seeing some LTE popping up around places in Phoenix AZ that I spend time, I'm pretty happy with it.

I switched vocoder to 4gv and disabled EVCR B no crackling anymore... but who knows maybe my towers updated.

How did you do that BTW?

Requires MSL but you do ##3282#->Edit->Advanced change your vocoders and uncheck EVRC-B... Though now that I checked it again it switched back to EVRC and kept EVRC-B unchecked so disabling EVRC-B possibly is all you need to do but I started with switching to 4gv.

How did you get them to give it to you? What was your reasoning with them?

I had a few dropped calls and so I called sprint and talked to them for about an hour. And the supervisor assured me that in one week tops the problem would stop. They were updating the towers here and I gotta say It stopped the next day and no more problems at all. And as for a lot of people having these problems sprint is updating their entire network so there will be dropped calls and bad quality here and there. I'm glad i got a good unit I'm loving it.

Got mine last Thursday also before they stopped early ordering. I LOVE IT!!! It is what the thunderbolt should have been
Just picked mine up when the store opened, coming from the Incredible this thing is HUGE, we'll see how it goes today
I got mine when the store opened. Love everything about it except for the power button.
I'm going from a regular Incredible as well. I'm really partial to the Incredible's pocket-sizedness. Would love to hear some first impressions.
Me and the wife each got one, loving it so far

Got mine bright and early 9am! None of the stores in my area even knew they had it in stock. The rep I spoke to didn't even know specs, I had to teach him about the phone! lol
I have no less than 5 stores within a 10 mile radius to choose from, and the one closest to me said they have 5-6 in stock right now, so I'm hoping to God they have one left by the time I get out of work at 5:30! Otherwise I'll be calling around and crossing my fingers. I think I'll be safe though, doesn't seem to be a hugely advertised phone and from what I'm reading has been kind of on the DL, so hopefully A) Monday is a slow cell sales day and B) they don't have a ton of people looking for one. We shall see!
I sold my Charge and picked this up this morning. I'm very impressed with the screen over the Bionic!! I hated the blurring and motion issues of the Motorla's crappy screen. I'm very excited to start playing some HD movies and see how they look!

Exactly. Verzion has been promoting the sh*t out of the Razr and still is. Even on their website the good for nothing Razr takes the top slot, the Rezound is off in the backslides and that slide doesn't even say that it was released yet, it just says "more info" and you have to click to see the price and that it is in fact available for pickup.

I got mine!
Just picked mine up at VZW. I called a few days ago and had them hold one until lunch time, just in case. What I can say about it so far:
Holy smudgy fingerprints Batman! They're all over the place. Maybe the VZW girl just had oily fingers: I don't know but the entire screen was hazy when I got to my car.
When did new phones become $299 instead of $199? My total price including early upgrade fee was $288. I got some kind of discount, but still really expensive.
Was concerned about size since I'm coming from an Incredible. My DInc has a silicone case so the actual size difference isn't that bad.
Fast. Wow, it's so fast that even using it takes a gentle touch. Much more sensitive than my DInc.
No idea about the 4g service yet. Haven't run any speed tests yet, but expect ~10 or 11 Mbps on 4g.
Just say no to the up-sell.
Comes with some kind of "you have to buy our micro-USB cable" that has little rails on the bottom I couldn't get a regular one to fit, maybe I didn't try enough.
Comes with a really neat Beats Audio/Monster(?) coin purse to put the headphones in.
The store didn't have may accessories on hand. Not likely that I'd buy any from them (maybe except the special USB cable) anyway but would have been nice to compare prices/selection.
The notification bar is well done. It has two panes. One for regular notifications. Another has recent apps, data usage, and some other cool stuff.

Shattered screen without touching phone.....

My wife got her Droid Razr Maxx 5 weeks ago. Today the sound quit working so like a dutiful husband I looked at all the settings and found nothing wrong. Stumped I sat the phone down and went to cook lunch for our family and when I came back the phone was sitting in the exact same position but the screen was shattered.
(I cannot post links due to my lurker status, sorry will be more productive so I can earn the right, but PM me I can send a link to what it looks like)
This phone has never been dropped and my wife takes great care when using it. Verizon will not replace it wihtout having me pay which I refuse to do (had she or I dropped it I would cough up the money in no time). I have contacted Motorola as well and was told to send it in but if the techs decide to they can charge me to fix it regardless. Customer care at Verizon said since this has never happened to another phone this is not a manufacturers defect (reasoning fuzzy?). Has anyone heard or seen this before or have any suggestions of what could have caused it or how we should continue?

PM some pics. Don't you think it might have cracked due a fast temperature change, a thermal shock?..
It was in the kitchen? If manual do nor warn about it you should complain regarding this issue. You should get a replacement
Send me some pics.

It was on my computer desk not in the kitchen so the temperature should be constant. It could have just overheated from bugging out something but it wasn't from outside influence. PM'ing picture

As you told, if you did not droped it, it may be related with some thermal issue, like you said about overheating.

Phantom touches.

Just curious if anyone else running cm10 based roms are experiencing the random phantom touches at any degree? I've had it on Mazda's AOKP and CN(A) build, agrabrens cm10, Lens_Flare's Aokp build as well as his PA port. Along with running Vanilla, Mac, and anthrax kernels.
Just thought to maybe try flashing a nand of an ICS backup I have to retest that when I get off work. But it seems it's doing it more and more and I'm thinking it is most likely the digitizer :/ ...
Praying it isn't but its looking that way.
If that is the case, anyone know if that's a component they can swap out at a sprint repair shop?
If not I may have to order one because I need new rear speaker as well, and just do replacement myself.
Side note: it was a hella PITA typing this with cursor randomly jumping around and random keys being pressed.... :sigh:
Thanks in advance for any input.

My Dad's 3d is having the same issue and it makes it impossible to use. I think it's the digitizer, so he's taking it to the Sprint store for them to check. I'll report what they say (if I remember to )

100% stock ICS.
I've been having this issue for a couple months now. Running stock ICS on Sprint. It comes and goes though. Sometimes it will do it for days at a time and then go away for a week. I turned on the development screen tap dot so I can see when its doing it. I usually have to just push the standby button off and back on and it might go away.
I'm going to take it to the Sprint store eventually to get replaced or fixed. I just don't want to get some crap referb when my phone is still in close to new condition with no other issues.
Read this.

Sounds like the digitizer. Same problem I'm having. It's been driving me crazy lol. Im actually taking it to sprint in the morning to get it replaced. Only $35 without insurance so rather than do it myself, I'm having them do it
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
Well I rushed from work today to make it to Sprint Repair shop by 6... I had already called and asked if they would replace it earlier this afternoon. Once I get there, of course they ask me to duplicate the problem and show them what its doing. And like any and every other thing you do, the moment you go to show someone, you cant replicate it!
My phone was trying to act brand new. The paint app that I installed earlier was totally placing lines all over where I was not touching. Stupid thing worked flawlessly not doing anything wrong. Couldnt get my texts to press random keys like they have been doing for 3 weeks now. XDA app was working fine, when it stays clicking posts and popping up the box to thank, reply etc...
So obviously, without showing any issue, there wasnt anything they could do for me. And just as I knew would freakin happen, the moment I left and started texting on the drive home, low and behold it starts going nuts again. Couldnt get it to do anything for me in the store, but soon as I rounded the corner and saw my house it was phantom touching all over the place. So I was pissed.
I don't know how much longer I can go before I superbowl spike this thing.
UGH!!!
I'm going to have them replace it even if I can't duplicate it in front of them. I KNOW what it's doing and why and like you, its driving me insane. Im not leaving until its replaced. Been dealing with it for weeks

I also called today (well yesterday now) thats how I got the price. I could do it myself but, Im not a patient person and I'd have to restrain myself from trying to rushing so as not to mess it up, so figured it'd be safer 2 let sprint do it. For the amt I pay for service, plus to havr it done, they better do it without a problem. Sure they will, theyre pretty decent where I go

Well good luck and keep me posted. Im probably going to go back tomorrow and see what I can have done. Manus need to start using better hardware. Its not like consumers are going to rush out and buy their latest and greatest phone 6-12 months later when they are under a 2 yr contract anyway, and 95% of people aren't going to pay full price. They will wait for their upgrade period to get the phone at 199...

Will do and yes they do. No most customers won't. I actually bought mine off ebay because upgrade was to far away and still got like 3 months before I can. They should let people upgrade at least once a yr even if theyre on 2yr contract, because when you upgrade, you have to extend your contract another 2yrs anyways or at least a yr. Even if they say you have to take the 2yr contract in order to upgrade a yr early. By the way, good luck on yours tomorrow too, if you go back

So I decided to hop on craigslist. Found one person selling Evo for parts for 50% then another person who needs to sell by tomorrow for 100$ obo. The second looks pretty mint as seller states its been in otter box for entire lifespan.
My question now is, if I was to get the second of the two, could I just swap over my internals to that phone?

Yes you can swap your internal parts. A little advice though if you do that..you may wanna use your back so you have your msid # and serial # incase you ever need it or sell it. I went to sprint today and at 1st the guy said my phone had to be replaced but can't be because it's rooted. Another guy came out and said they had the part but didn't know if they could do it because it's rooted and I told him, yes they can, Ive done it before, as long as it's hardware and not software related so, he said, ok and he replaced my digitizer

Very nice. Free?
I decided to nand back to an ICS sense backup and ran the calibrate on it. Then did fresh install back of cm10.
So far I haven't had any issues, but I'm keeping a close eye in it. If it starts back I guess I'll try a different sprint store for the repair. Hope it goes as smoothly for me. But most all reps I've had to deal with don't wanna help at all.
Did they make you show them it messing up?

No it was $35 if Id of had the ins, itd of been free and as soon as I was walking into the store, it started acting up and soon as the guy unlocked the screen it went crazy. Ive tried do fresh installs and it worked for a short time then back to messing up

my LOVELY Verizon corporate store experience today

so, i used to run a verizon franchise store for 2 years. we prided ourselves on excellent customer service, and just treating people great overall. i know what a headache corporate stores are, and how incompetent corporate employees tend to be, so when i worked there, i made myself fully aware of all aspects of each phone, and i helped people immensely.
i've had so many bad experiences at corporate stores, but today trumped them all.
so i ordered online, and all i had to literally do was go there on my lunch hour at work, let them activate it, then i would leave. that's it. it was paid for, and i was gonna do the ESN swap myself (bc i have unlimited data, and put it on another line.)
there's like 3 people in there. in front of me was this dumbass girl who took 15 minutes to decide if she wanted a white or black iphone. then, she spent 10 more minutes trying to get her parents on the phone to approve the upgrade. so by now, it's like 12:30. i have an hour lunch until 1, and i'm hoping it'll be dunzo in a few minutes.
i get called up, i tell him im just picking up, he gets it, activates it. i say, "don't do anything like put on screen protectors for me, just power it up please so it activates and then i can go, because i've got to be back to work at 1." he's like, sure no problem.
we activate it, great! i do one last screen test......bam. dust and dead pixels under the screen. i was like, you HAVE to be kidding me. so i say, man i'm incredibly sorry to have to do this, but look, there's problems with this screen. can we do an exchange?
he's like oh let me see...and he looks and can't see the issues at all. so he brings it to his manager. his manager spends time staring at it and is like, "there's absolutley NOHTING wrong with that phone. don't do an exchange." and i overhear this..i'm like um k..guy comes back, says "yeah sorry, we can't see it." i go, "man look, it's right there. see that speck of black? dead pixel. see those other specs? dust under the screen." he's like, oh..let me show him again.....
so he shows the manager, and this seriously goes on for 20 minutes. he kept saying "There's nothing wrong with that screen; there's no dead pixels. i have PERFECT vision, and there's nothing wrong wtih it."
so i walk over, and i go "look, pal, i have 20/20 vision. i've had phones with dead pixels before, and hell, my DNA right now has a dead pixel. i'm NOT living with antoher $600 device with dead pixels again, when i should be gettinga perfect device." and he's getting all mad at ME because i want a flawless screen. REALLY GUY?!
he keeps saying there's nothing wrong, and he has perfect vision. i'm going, "WHY would i make this up!?!? i JUST got the phone minutes ago, and saw a defect. WHY would i lie about a defect right in front of you? WHAT do i have to gain!? NOTHING!"
so he's all pissy and goes "ok whatever, this is a busy store, i have a busy store to run, i can't be sitting here looking at phones all damn day, just swap it out, i don't care." i say, okay thanks! lol...and then i ask the guy i was dealing with, so i can return this at any verizon store, not just this one, in case something is wrong with the next one right? he's like yea, but i mean, you only get 1 return and that's it. i'm like, seriously? what if it's defective? and the manager overhears and butts in with his 2 cents: "oh well, you know, we can't have you sitting here going through ALL of our stock and opening ever phone just to see if you found one you LIKE." i laughed and walked away.
seriously? what an ass. and THAT man was a manager of a corporate verizon store.
it then took like 20 more minutes JUST for them to swap it out. seriously. another 20 minutes to swap phones. at this point, i'm late back to work, and now i had to use MY OWN personal time from work because i was over a half hour late because these arrogant people wouldn't simply admit the customer was always right, which was our standard motto at my franchise store.
yet another reason to deal with the local businesses rather than going to corporate verizon; these people don't know a thing, and they don't care about a thing you want. you goto a small business franchise, and they actually care, because it's THEIR business.
so yeah, if you're ever in NJ, don't go to the Howell store on Route 9!
sorry for the book, but i had to vent

he keeps saying there's nothing wrong, and he has perfect vision. i'm going, "WHY would i make this up!?!? i JUST got the phone minutes ago, and saw a defect.

Sorry you had to go through that bro. Is your new one defect free? How did you notice the dust under the screen on the first one?

i saw black marks..and then the dead pixel was a perfect black square.
my new one seems to be fine. you noticing that home screen lag at all? i bet the verizon version is bloated down to all hell. can't wait for root.
Hey, you said lovely experience in the title. I was expecting a positive story! I've been deceived!

That sux. Nope, no home screen lag at all for me on AT&T.
The only lag I'm getting is from SwiftKey as I posted in the other thread. It's mostly when I'm in Hangouts with the keyboard up and I press the home button. Hangouts will close but SwiftKey stays on the screen for a few seconds.

I am glad u got ur lg g2 but I feel ur pain. I don't even try to deal with stores. They have no clue no matter what store from what provider u go. And I think no offense the Verizon lg G2 version isn't as good looking as the international or att version. But that is just my opinion. Enjoy ur g2. I THINK LG DEVICES are very good as of late and sadly underrated. I personally use lg since probably the last 2 years exclusive. It started with the lg 4x HD to the optimus g to the g pro. All very great devices. I am still not sure if I wanna get the G2 since non removable battery and storage always make me kinda turn away from devices. Nothing is more annoying to send or exchange a devices just because the battery went bad. But like I know myself I probably gonna get the G2 sooner then later lol

Wow. I would def call customer service on those guys. I have been through the same thing with an Incredible that had a green screen. Sorry mate!

I had a horrible experience getting mine. I went to exchange my Motorola x for the g2 in a corporate store. They told me I had already done an exchange which I had on one of my lines. But the exchange I was doing wasn't on that line. So they told me I couldn't do it, and so I call customer care and they tell me that the system is saying I exchanged the phone when I switched two devices already on my account. So she says she's correcting the issue and the woman is on break and to come back in a half hour. So I wait a half hour and come back to the store about 45 minutes after and surprise! No fix. So I leave again empty handed and go to the store I originally wanted to go to. The customer service rep I called on the way told me to bring both phones on both lines to the store so I did. Turns out I get there and it took them literally 5 minutes to do the transaction and I didn't need my other line's phone. Absolutely ridiculous.

TL;DR:He gets his G2, notices dead pixel while in store, tries to get replacement. Representative asks manager about exchange but manager denies black pixel and says phone is fine. After much debate and dispute, user gets a new LG G2.

bam! thanks lol
yeah pretty much the manager was an asshat who didn't know what he was talking about, and was clearly blind despite saying "I HAVE PERFECT VISION" like 5 times. what a total douchebag. lol
typical verizon, i'll never be a verizon customer ever again. i dont care what their lte coverage is. just a terrible company.
So the dust issue makes me wonder - is the screen not infused like Samsung's?
Damn, that sucks! I picked up my G2 yesterday at a corporate AT&T store and was in and out within 10 minutes. Got a perfect, unwrapped G2 precious. They didn't even break the sim card from its plastic. Maybe it helped that I entered the store and said, "I want a G2 at full retail price, nothing else." Easily the most flawless buying experience for a most flawless phone

Similar here. Went in, upgraded a family member's line for my phone despite it being a non-LTE phone. Was in and out in 15 minutes. Couldn't have asked for a better experience especially after going to Best Buy and having the guy tell me that the line getting upgraded would be disconnected because it didn't have a LTE SIM card.

You would think it shouldn't be so a headache. But I honestly don't know why so much uneducated ppl work for cellphone companies. Like when I went to Verizon here by me today and they wanted to tell me to rather get a droid or S4 or wait for the freaking iPhone 5s. Hell no. I am with Att anyway. Yeah I know we can debate about what network is the best but that isn't the point. I was there to just look for myself on how different the Verizon version is and I didn't like it as much but that isn't the point either. It just makes me mad they wanna push u to something else and there r many ppl not as educated on phones like you and me and they will go with that the rep tells them and miss out on the best phone to date. It is a shame.

Went to a different Verizon store today to exchange my G2 and had a great experience. It took awhile, but the agent saw the issue I was experiencing and agreed that it was worth replacing (random brightness dim/brightening). Sadly, the new one has the same issue. He even agreed with me that the back of the phone was awful. Rare to find such an honest salesman @ VZW.
My old phone got really hot as well and this one doesn't get half as hot, so I may still keep it.

I would caution against them. They did return my phone in a working condition. However, they clearly have a very poor understanding of how to properly run a business and you should count out any kind of customer support during the process.
First off, when you send off your phone, you're given a guarantee that the phone will be finished within 4 days and shipped back no later than the 5th day it's been there. great! Except when the 10th day rolls around and you haven't heard a thing from them. So you think "I'll just give them a call and see what's up." Only now you find out that they don't answer the phone. They sometimes do, but that's after calling back several times throughout the day. You finally get them on the phone and they apologize for not getting your phone sent out and tell you it's going through testing and it will be shipped out the next monday at the latest. Wednesday rolls around and still, you hear absolutely nothing from them. Then begins the process all over again. You have them promise to call you if it's not sent out and the person on the phone personally guarantee's to call you if it's not sent out. Guess what? Another promise broken.
My 4 days took just under a month. It's still a small business and it seems like it's being run by a few people who do everything. If they had told me that it would take a month in the beginning, I would have been okay. Instead, they choose to extremely over promise what they can't even begin to deliver on. The entire thing felt like I was getting scammed and I was never very certain that I wasn't until I got my phone back.
Once again, I did get my phone back and it does work well. My screen sometimes doesn't work now for some reason but I haven't actually tested to make sure it's the rom that's not working. If you do decide to go with them, I would take any guarantee they give you with a grain of salt.
I believe the JTAG repair itself was ~$60 but my logic board was supposedly also bad so it got bumped up to $100 in the end. If I had to do it all again, I would probably just buy a new logic board on ebay and replace that for ~$60-70 bucks myself but it's not something I thought about at the time.

Thanks for the detailed response. I don't think I'll be using them as I'd be too worried my phone would never get returned. Time to look elsewhere. :crying:
Most people have great luck with them. Don't take one bad experience as the whole picture of the company.

I will say I got mine back and the touch screen wasn't workin. They wanted me to ship it back so they could look at it I took it apart myself and one of the connectors for the touchscreen wasn't connected so I fixed it but they didn't test my phone out before they shipped it back. So I would advise against using them.

Im going to stick with my original answer of I DO recommend MobileTechVideos JTAG service! That means I ENDORSE their service.... They were very detailed about how to correspond with them, I had no difficulty in this WHATSOEVER. Provided tracking on my phone. Slow return service nets you exactly what you pay for. Want it back sooner.... pay the postage and take it up with USPS or UPS or whoever is handling your parcel. MobTech is doing YOU a service with service options to fit the pockets of different people... Don't H8 cuz you went light on your payment decision.... Mobile tech videos adhered to the outline they setup 10 fold IMHO, On BOTH transactions I made with them....
I am NOT a paid spokesperson for MobTechVid.
Just a guy that would use them again (God Forbid) if the need arises.

Ya I read it again.... Go to Mobtechs website and try again bro.... you cant complete your transaction with out attaining exactly all the info you need to track your phone and it states clearly you pay base amount u get base postal service.... you pay rush , it comes back a day later than rush service. both time it was in their shop for the same amount of time.... but I payed different returns and slow was slow, speedy was -speedy. When they charge your card... they have provided all info on EVERYTHING you will encounter until it comes back to you.... never strayed from it once... So Stop ****in your phone up and JTAG wont be needed....
And OMG..... We have multiROM now? Im so excited....!:fingers-crossed:
