[Q] Why is there no root for Kindle Fire Hdx? Is is too hard? - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I am still deciding if I should buy a kindle fire hdx. It would be perfect for me if was not for amazon's os. I thought that a root would soon be available but for what I was able to find online, it seems that no one is actually looking at it. Has Amazon finally made an "unrootable" device or it is simply that the fire hdx does not awake much interest?

yes. actually no good dev has a real serious effort in hacking this device. maybe in 2-3months.

Unless HashCode has stopped tinkering with the Kindle line, your "no good Dev" comment is absurd.
The real reason is that there have been many other releases & none of the higher end HDX devices have released. My 64Gb just shipped early, get it Tuesday, but my LTE version is still a month away from release, maybe two from shipping. With the wonderful Snapdragon 800, I would almost guarantee that it will get root, even if I have to do it myself.

The first kindle fire has good Roms still releasing, already have kitkat on it. I'm hesitant to buy the hdx until it gets more active.

no need to rush..LTE versions of kindle fire not totally shipping as yet..
devs will get to root this device soon enough...
we'll all get to install google play store or maybe even a custom rom in time for Xmas.
no need to gripe, root will come soon enough..
please be patient.
kindle fire hardware specs look like nexus 5!!!

I will not be picking one up either, but I am working my hardest to get root on this thing. Nothing is working (Impactor, Framaroot, everything else) so I'm going to need to find my own exploit. May take some time but I think I might be on to something. I also have school and marching band, though.

I'll bet @Hashcode would be willing to add commentary to anyone with any valid idea, or anyone that gets to a point where they think they may have identified an exploit. It has been years, but I have worked with a few devs on testing possible s-off & root exploits numerous times in the past. & I will have some time during the December holiday season to play around a bit. Hash mentioned taking a look at Kingo & so far all anyone has done is tried to install & root using it. Nobody has looked at the exploit it uses & tried to see if it just needs to be pointed elsewhere, which is a real possibility. At any rate, I just got my 64Gb version & my LTE model just arrived in Phoenix, sitting on a pallet till December. (My brother works for Amazon). At any rate, I am pretty tied up with work right now, lot's of hospital being built in Texas keeping PE's busy right now. I'll take a look at some obvious routes this weekend, but any serious exploit hunts will have to wait till late December as far as I am concerned.

I tried multiple exploits using the app here but all of them were patched. It could be a possibility that's the case. It seems that this is locked up tighter than a bank safe.

Thinking of getting an NT today.

Does it seem like they will eventually figure out how to get custom roms and kernels, or is it still up in the air as to if its even possible. And I've read of the possibility of b&n doing an OTA update that would close the door on the current rooting method and side loading of apps, is there any reason to believe they would? Or is that just paranoid speculation.

OTA updates to the BC broke rooting so I assume a OTA to the NT would do the same. Usually rooting was restored in a few days. Custom kernels are a different issue and currently is unknown.
Kindle has CM7 booting on it. may have to go for the kindle over the nook tablet. Custom roms and kernels are a big selling factor and the kindle seems much closer to that.

Yeah, you should got the Kindle route. If CM7 is your main concern, then yes, Kindle is for you.
The NT has been out 2 weeks and its already being written off.

True... Sadly, I doubt the higher ups of B&N really care about that small 1% for whom this is a concern. I'm still on the fence myself, but for me it's a NT or just save my money and wait; The lack of uSD kills the KF for me and I don't need/want a tablet enough to justify anything with a higher pricetag.

I think its a little early to say its being written off. The awesome developers on this forum are still working on it, and probably others too. Even if the fully rooted device is as far as it goes, it is still a great device for the money.

Not likely. Stopped by B&N on the way from class today and saw 3-4 people walk out with the NT during the time(30 min?) I was hanging around talking to the "tech". They're still selling quite well, but time will tell if they can keep it up.
B&N couldn't care less about losing sales to those who aren't buying their low cost eReader to use as intended. There is little to no margin for selling it as a general purpose tablet so they really don't care that those who can't load a custom ROM aren't happy with their device. Lot's of more expensive tablets out there for those who want to do custom development and a Nook app for those who want to buy their online products.

I wonder if the Kindle Fire is actually helping NT sales. The KF sell people on the idea of getting a 7" tablet, but they shop around and finds that the NT has better specs for a little more. They read reviews like Engadget that say the NT plays videos smoother. The NT is suddenly on their radar.
The average person wouldn't care a bit about the bootloader, though they might be disappointed to find out about the 1GB limit for own content.

If I understand correctly if the Nook is rooted apps install in the 15gb partition so rooted nooks have access to more than 1gb. Of course your average user isn't going to root their device.

Sideloaded apps also. You wanna move files to the B&N partition, you use root file manager to move.
I wouldnt mind buying apps if b&n actually had any in thier market. They dont have crap.

Atleast for me the NT led to a kindle sale. Custom roms and kernels are a big deal to me, and I'm guessing the kindle is a week or two away from CM7 and most likely CM9 as well. And maybe the devs figure out a way around NTs locked boot loader, but there also seems to be a good chance they don't. It was a simple decision.

I keep reading on various forums that the locked bootloader is a Nook Tab killer. Why?????? Please educate an old man as to why this is such a big deal. Within 3 days and less than an hour of tapping, I was able to sideload Amazon App store the Whole Kindle store, Google and a whole host of other sites that have content and applications for free or for sale. Already there are people who have rooted the tablet. Please tell an ignorant old man WHY it is so important to unlock the bootloader. What would you do/have once you unlocked the bootloader that you can't do without? Is it just because the locked bootloader feels like a slap in the face to developers? I mean what more would you do to it that you can't already do with it locked down?
My Tab does everything and more than I'd ever do with a real tablet so I'm just very curious as to what all the fuss is about.
Custom ROMS and kernels allow you to really extend the life of your device (meaning the device won't seem outdated so quickly). The CPU can be overclocked, the voltage tweaked for better battery life, newer versions of the android OS can be uploaded, etc.

Question: What happens when B&N releases an automatic update (replacing your system and your downloaded apps) and it closes the hole that you used to install additional apps?
Answer: We don't know. Having a way around the bootloader (eg, booting SDcards) gives some assurance that we will be able to root future versions, allowing continued "unauthorized" apps.

Here's why:
- A regular build of Android is better than the dumbed down version used in the nook tablet line.
- Ice Cream Sandwich is 10x better than Gingerbread.
- A tablet version of Android is better than smartphone version used in the nook.
Thanks everyone for the quick education. I understand much better now. It does appear that with a locked bootloader the customer is at the mercy of the vendor. They control the software, they control the hardware you just bought and paid for. I get it now. Sounds like I just rented a Barnes & Noble portal to their content. They can close the back door to any other apps anytime they choose. Almost doesn't seem fair.

Meaning, the 'all other devices' no longer works, since as was pointed out, it was never technically on the official list to begin with.

This is like the Rezound all over again. By the time S-Off was possible, I had lost interest and never bought one. I guess I'll keep my GNex a while longer. As much as I want this phone tomorrow, I'll likely never buy it or any other HTC phone.......unless the dev's pop out in the next week or two with an unlock for the bootloader and S-Off, then I'll reconsider. I just wonder if VZW or HTC have a way of quantifying lost revenues due to locking the phones down.

and yet, VZ still wants us to bend over.
That's why I don't say any thing about HTCDev website. Once Verizon hears a device can be unlocked, its game over.
Pardon my complete ignorance. I've only had one HTC device before (Spouses TBolt), but I rooted it when I first got it and rooting instructions went live on XDA. What's the likelihood of rooting the DNA without having the HTCDev site unlocking it. Again, sorry if this is an elementary question.....
I am getting this phone tomorrow and give my S3 to the spouse, but I remember the wait before that phone was rooted, and it was agonizing. A Perm Root method came out literally on the 14th day, my last day to return it, so I got lucky. Do you think this will stunt development for this phone? I love using different, power-sipping kernels on to my devices.....

You do realize that a quality ROM will probably not be out for weeks. Not quite sure what you are looking to do the very first day with your bootloader / root. I am willing to wait a couple of weeks as I am sure the devs will figure it out.
I'm am so pissed, but this kind of thing happens every year when I upgrade. I'm still getting mine tomorrow, and just praying S-Off won't take as long to achieve like it did for the Rezound. Fingers Crossed

Is anyone actually surprised by this? By most accounts, this was entirely expected given what has happened with some previous Verizon HTC devices. Like the Incredible 4G, which could be unlocked via the site before it was officially released, but once the release date actually rolled around, it no longer worked.
I prefer to have root just for wifi tether and titanium backup. Just so much easier to restore apps with it then to try and use each app's backup/restore process.
I'm not looking until Feb anyways, but definitely disappointing.
This seems like a deal breaker to me. I was all hyped up about this but not so much anymore.

[Q] How likely is a root for the HDX/How long do you think it will take to get

Just want to say this ISN'T a complaint, just a question--the people who come up with this stuff do a great service.
I'm debating a Fire HDX 7", but I wouldn't want to get one knowing there was NO way there'd be a root down the line.
How likely is it that we'll see a root, and is it likely to be a long-term thing, or something that we should see in the not-too-distant future?
Thanks--was wavering between the HDX and one of the new Nexus 7s, and I really want a reason to pick the HDX

I got my GS4 4 days ago, managed to use the Root De La Vega to gain root. After much trial and error I finally found some posts about only being able to use SafeStrap to load TW roms on the phone.
Is there hope of anyone being able to figure out how to get around the locked bootloader and get CWM on there so we can flash something other than TW?

They've been working on unlocking the bootloader since the phone came out in May, and you're looking for an answer in one day?
I strongly suspect that the phone companies would like to market their Android products to the same market that used to be dominated by Blackberry which implies a level of security that the corporate world can live with, and that most of their customers aren't interested in root.

I was fishing for a response from some with more information than I, not assuming it was going to be solved in 1 day because I asked the question...
Don't get your underwear in a twist.
It's a tall order for someone new to the community to distill all the information on this forum down to something digestible and understandable. To the best of my knowledge there is no quality single point of reference to get up to date on the progress of the efforts that are evolving. I was simply asking the question for those of us who don't have as much time as they'd like to devote to getting up to speed on these projects.

On the other hand I didn't get one because the accessories are limited because the Verizon version is different.

I don't know what changed. It seems like there's a new push to lock down Android, it might have to do with Android Pay. It's really a shame. I don't understand the lack of people looking for exploits. Maybe they just aren't posting about it like they used to.

Google has created nearly as much of a "walled-garden" as Apple have. Clearly the "security" concerns of the extreme few have caused quite a panic and nearly all of the major manufacturers have locked down their bootloaders and exploits are being punished legally in some cases. Crazy considering it is all based around "open source" code.
VZW is by far the worse offender and I am only on their network because the others all suck in my area. Not that it matters anymore since practically none of them have rootable devices. Unfortunately the best bet this year is the headphone jackless HTC U11 for a whopping $650 for the unlocked, bootloader mod-allowed version.
Has any one tried Kingo Root?

I may look into it later this week. I have a few things to try.
What a shame. This phone is fantastic, the LG V20 just showed up for me to pick up and I find myself reluctant to pick it up. I know it has root, as I roofed it for my boyfriend, after extreme difficulty it worked but all the custom ROMs for it made it where he can't receive texts or calls. Haven't gone looking for the fix yet. I may wait.
Crossing my fingers at the above post. You'd be my saving Grace. (;

Oh and for KingORoot, you need to ask for the OEM unlock code through LG but this phone isn't apart of their available devices. Exploit please!
I fixed his V20, now is rooted with custom ROM and calling and text officially work. Is it enough for me to give up my G6 for root? Still reluctant. Yes, that's how good it is.
Autoprime just posted in the main G6 dev area, it sounds like he is doing a bit of poking at the platform.
It doesn't directly help vs988, but any sign of an experienced developer working the G6 is great.
