Omate Truesmart - Shoddy build. Beware - Ornate TrueSmart

My Kickstarter Omate Truesmart arrived yesterday. Super excited.
Today I wore it as a wristwatch for the first time. Within 2 hours, just wearing it on a standard tube journey, nothing untoward or unusual - not banged or something- it had lost the power button. [Edit: By this I mean it's fallen off and gone missing, if that's not clear!] I now can't turn it on.
On the plus side, the battery life is amazing. You'll never have to charge it - the battery is good for the lifetime of the device!
Now how do I contact Omate and tell them this isn't right?
UPDATE: OMATE did indeed swap the watch for a working one in the end. It took a while, but they are worth talking to with issues. Credit to em, in the end.

Try unscrewing the back and press the battery in whilst trying to turn it on. Some of the watches seem to be a bit loose. If it works, you'll probably need to wedge a bit of card between the battery and the watch back.
Have you tried the other battery?

How does this solve the problem of the power button falling off and going missing? *baffled*
Perhaps I should have been more explicit. This isn't a software bug. The button fell off in casual wear. As per subject line: Shoddy build. All there is now is a hole in the side of the watch.

Post a picture, people will understand it better. For some, english is not their first language.
Regarding warranty issue, contact them through one of the emails: http://omate.com/contacts.html or go to their official forum and ask people for advice. I'm sure someone will chime in with a suggestion. I'm not doubting you, but still have a hard time understanding how that button can fall out since it supposed to go inward.

Thanks. I sent an email to them. Bit worried that some people have had trouble contacting them though.

Got onto the tube with the button, pulled back sleeve to check the time a bit later, and no button or sign of it....
Anyone else had issues? I hope this is a random issue, not the first of a wave!

Thankyou. I have done so.

Please keep posted on what Omate tell you, and how they handle this.

My mate just got his return done,
There do reply but take ages working out a solution,
After which your then told that the watch is in short supply so have to wait for a replacement,
My mate watch had a issue with mounting the internal storage and it overheating while charging,
To the opt send omate the pictures there will sort it out but you'll have to wait for a replacement

I'd need access to one for starters. And willingness to put the fiddly thing together...
For the record, despite several attempts to elicit a response from Omate on several email addresses, I've received no meaningful reply from them on this.
For the moment, I have to say: Caveat Emptor with this company.

Saw the image posted. It looks like you lost not only the button but the stainless steel bushing that was compression seated into the case. I tried to remove the button and bushing from the case on one and gave up when I started looking for a hammer. Even though it sucks, I would consider you experience the exception and not the rule.

That's something. Though little consolation. Someone else over on the Omate forums says he's lost the power button as well. So there's more than one gone this way...
The news is that Omate finally wrote back:
Please share your address details so we can register you for spare parts replacement as soon as our service center is in place in your country.
Thanks
Best regards,

Less than stellar. But it's a response...

It's really all they can do right now. You could send them your watch and maybe get a replacement but it's nice to know they've at least responded.
Don't give up.

After some communication, and MUCH waiting, they finally came through and got my watch replaced. I now have a power button! Woo!
So yes - it's worth persevering. I think they are probably understaffed, and rather busy, and you must be very patient; but they do the right thing by customers in the end.

Green dead camera out of the blue?

Just out of no where, I can't use my camera anymore. I even did a factory reset and it still doesn't work. I did the firmware upgrade and it was fine so I am not sure what could have caused this since doing a search, it seemed most was due to the firmware update. I was just taking pictures Wednesday of last week and yesterday, it just puked.
It takes forever to get it working and when it does, it looks like the homescreen all blurry. self facing camera works though. If I do (or can before it pukes), it just takes a green picture. ???
anyone else have their camera not working out of the blue?
I may have to send this unit back to ASUS to have them look it over as I don't think it's a software issue anymore.
Suggestions? Thanks!

There was another thread with a few posters who had a similar/the same issue. Pretty sure their camera wasn't even showing a good preview though, they were getting green and static even on the screen of the Camera app itself.
Too lazy to find it, but so you know there are some out there.

That happened to mine. It was working yesterday just fine and all of a sudden this morning, the rear camera only show corrupted green lines. Have you got a fix for that or you have RMAed it?

Mine suddenly stopped last week. I sent it in to the Texas Asus service center for repair.
One thing I can say with mine that specified hw issue is the if you pinched the top of the screen, gently, by the camera it would come back into focus.....but the minute it was closed and reopened, or handled in any way it would go back to a green screen.

I guess this is going back to get repaired. thanks for the find.
Oh wow, how strange. Of course I don't have the issue, but good to know for the future that it is h/w. Suppose there's just a faulty connection somewhere? I'm going to disassemble later and see if it isn't something I could notice.

Yeah, its unfortunate. It was an accident that I found that as I was just taking out of the case to make sure nothing was obstructing or maybe the lense came loose and when I grabbed the ATP to pull it out the camera became clearer and so thats when I started gently sqeezing around that area, lol
I was like WTF!!????

You should be able to get something because that's completely hardware related no way a ROM can cause that! I would get your case escalated... Best way to do that would be PM Gary key be sure to include your name contact info ect... Along with serial number and your email address...
Make sure the subject is descriptive like...
New hardware defect: green camera.....
Wait a day and if that doesn't work I can give you an email of my contact...
Again another flaw on asus's part that's why I returned it while I had a chance! It's there crappy quality control! I am telling you they need to inspect those things paying a Chinese worker the whole 10 minutes it would take to examine it is nothing compared to fixing it after the fact!

I was in the same situation, unlocked, rooted and running CWM.
I contacted Gary, he hooked me up with Tech support manager in Texas and they did the repair.
The only issue was when I got it back I was getting the CWM loop of death
It was soft bricked for sure, I couldnt get it to do anything.
I followed the guide by diamondback in the Dev section and was able to get it fixed, but I thought it was a lost cause there for a while.
I am guessing they made the physical repair, tested it and then did a factory restore which I believe will put it into that state so if you do send it off, make sure you have the ROM backed up and that you have adb running on a laptop so you can recover.
Camera seems to be fine now, hopefully I will not have to go through that again or for any other repairs.
good luck!

How long did the RMA take you? I keep on seeing threads about how it's almost been a month with no tablet in sight. I need my tab for school so I'm thinking of RMAing mine after my term, but that's still 1 month away.
Any suggestions guys?

Well Gary and a tech got back to me but I think when I did the pinch to see if its a hw issue, I think I screwed up my GPS connection since now it doesn't work anymore. But my Roma has stalled and I wonder if I should wait until the end of the month to see what this "new hardware" is. I mean, I can push the RMA but I did say my GPS was working until I tested the pinch camera "test" so I can wait. Pics would be great since my parents are in Taiwan right now and would like to send them some pics of their "grandson" (my dog) as he's growing (got him at 6 weeks and it's now 4 months).
Mine is a bit weird tho. When i turn off my screen from the camera app, i can hear my camera focusing. Sometimes after it would just reboot itself. Sometimes it would just crash the tablet.
Also, i tried the pinch method. It didnt work for mine.
I got the green screen last week. Called tech support and was told to send back for repair. It arrived yesterday in Texas and has been received and now in the pipeline.
So far, I have no complaints. Quite happy with the responsiveness of Asus.
I've always understood that, with electronics, if it's gonna fail, it usually happens within the first 90 days. If the item works past the initial 90 days, then should be good for life.
Well, my TP is less than 90 days old.

10 business day exactly.
I shipped it 3/12....got it back on 3/26
i had the same issue with my TFP
i gave it a good smack near the rear camera and now it works im pretty sure the problem is with the connection.
i also noticed that my TFP screen is barely pop out a bit. so my guess is that is there is some kind of "plug wires" that are not exactly well fit.
my guess is my fix"the smack" would be just a temporary fix that may or may not work with you and the problem will come back later
Mine died today, I can push on it for a second and when I let go it goes to the green screen. Have a bunch of dead pixels in one area as well, and my dock isn't sturdy anymore. Just about to RMA pretty soon here.
RMA it. Doesn't take too long for them to get ur tab back to you now

Prime/new prime driving me nuts-dmclient

I'm gonna go crazy here, I can't even begin to explain how much lack of respect I have for this asus organization. So I got my new prime after a month of my old one being rma'ed. That was painful enough, but now I unbox my new C3 model and it comes with Nothing. No charger accessories warranty card etc.
Anyways that's not even my real issue. I power it up after charging it only to find out these new models are on .14?? Seriously??! So now I have the same damn Dmclient force close error as I did my FIRST prime originally. So I basically can't do OTA worth sh$t.
Really? This can't be happening
Oh and for the record I've already tried clearing the cache and data of dmclient
why did you get your first prime RMA'd?
I haven't heard a single person on here have a success story of returning their Prime to ASUS for RMA. Most seem to report them getting a TFP in worse condition than their first.
That sucks ass mate.
I would pm gary and tell him. What a joke.

Kind of sounds like maybe you got a returned unit... Or maybe I'm confused: was the C3 directly from ASUS or one you bought at retail? If it was a replacement for your RMA'd unit, maybe they assumed you kept the power adapter and cable when you sent your other one in?
Just trying to understand what happened here...

that's not usually always the case with replacements.
I know personally doing laser printer return exchanges with Lexmark that they don't include any of the peripheral components. They instruct you to send just the laser printer and to remove the paper, power cables, toner, photoconductor kit, and trays.
ASUS probably operates in the same fashion.
I know Best Buy also will only warranty exchange the parts you bring in and will open your replacement and take out the parts you didn't provide for the return exchange.

Why?
If they ask you to send in just the tablet then all you should get back is a repaired/replacement tablet!
Or are you saying they should give you a whole new set of peripherals every time an item is replaced?

I know this is besides the point that they forgot to return things, but why did you send in the cleaning cloth? Were there not enough microfibers or something?
Dude go to Walmart and pickup the microfiber cloth in the electronics section sold from GE. It's like 5x the size of the cloth that comes with the Prime, it's thicker and it comes with liquid foam spray for only $9.99. You'll forget about that miniscule old cloth in no time.

GPS Kit Issues

This might be a duplicate thread, i looked but didnt see one... anyways....
got my dongle today. nothing but problems. i had 5 random reboots in the little over 30 minutes that i had the dongle attached. There was also a HUGE reduction in overall performance. The weirdest thing is that it kept getting stuck in landscape mode after the dongle was removed. I had to reboot to get it back to portrait. Also drained over 20% of my battery in those 30 minutes.
the GPS did work extremely well though.
Has anyone had any of these issues?
You running latest firmware .21?
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using XDA Premium HD app
he must be or else the dongle wouldnt work. i would highly doubt the dongle is causing reboots. cant really see any reason why it would. i havent had any of those issues. device performs just fine with dongle on or off.
I'd say op best bet is to reboot. cut power off n leave off for a few seconds then cut power back on and see how things act. if things still acting funny, try a soft reset. you do this by putting a paperclip in the little hole underneath the memory card slot. you will see the prime reset and reboot. then try dongle and everything else then.
Duh, my bad I totally forgot about that

Glad it seems to work so far. Alot of times, a reset will clear up any software mishaps that happen. Same as with installing some apps. They usually tell you that if you experience issues, try rebooting/reseting to clear issue up. The device restarts with the program or whatever more settled in.

Kinda/sorta..lol. soft reset is a more drastic reboot, IMO. its usually used if the prime freezes up or starts acting up alot. You even have another kind that I believe is called a cold boot or a hard boot or something. That involves holding power button and volume down at the same time(while power is still on, I believe) until prime reboots. Then keep hold it until you see some lettering across the top of the screen. Then let go. Then it'll say device will reset/reboot if nothing is pressed within a few seconds.
I always do it in order if the previous one didn't work or fix problem. A regular reboot(power off then on again), then a soft reset, then a cold/hard boot.

Then you submitted it 10 days ahead of its actual release, you should really only be counting from the 16th. That means it's only been 7 business days since the dongle has been shipping. That's not much.
Plus it seems to me that everyone who registered early seems to be in the same boat. I ordered 4/17 and am also in the same boat; something makes me think they're going to try and deny it or something since I listed the date I actually received the Prime in the mail as the purchase date. Not really, lol, I'm sure I'll get it, just wish it would hurry up >.>
On the 30th (1st for me) is when everyone should start making a real fuss. 10 business days is plenty of time to get something like this shipped out.

I submitted mine on the 16th still saying being processed !!
I will be very surprised if they do ship out by the 30th. Asus yet again proves they could not arrange a piss up in a brewery.
They should not have announced etc untill they was in position to deliver. Seems 99% of people who have got them are American, haven't heard one person from UK say they have shipped status yet alone received it
Got my kit today. I'm just posting to let everyone know that I won't be using it. One, because I'm too classy to have a gigantic police-wannabe console in my car as a GPS unit. And two, because I'm not hippy enough to aimlessly explore woods and essentially emulate homeless people in a park.

The main problem is your location. When the boat leaves China, first it has to navigate past the troubled waters by the Koreas and Indonisia. Once clear of that, it will wait for a Naval ship to be near it in case of Pirates by Somalia. Once clear of that, it has to time it's trip around the African Cape with good weather....Once past that...again wait for Naval protection as it goes up the Abrian sea, thru the Suez Canal. After it clears the Suez, it again has to be careful of the flareups in the Mid-East. After it clears all that, it's clear sailing (or steaming) to England. However, once it gets there, it is again delayed because it has to wait for a slot to clear in port since all the slots are taken up with ships unloading parts and equipment for the Olympics. But first, Perishable food comes first.
Hope this helps explain the difficulty you have.

Got my kit today. I'm just posting to let everyone know that I won't be using it. One, because I'm too classy to have a gigantic police-wannabe console in my car as a GPS unit. And two, because I'm not hippy enough to aimlessly explore woods and essentially emulate homeless people in a park.

got my dongle today. nothing but problems. i had 5 random reboots in the little over 30 minutes that i had the dongle attached.

I've also had a series of reboots with the dongle, often while the tablet idle and the screen off. A hard reboot didn't help. I'll try a soft reset with the dongle on.

What a Patronising post
I am 45 years old not 5
Like I said They should not have announced etc untill they was in position to deliver
A soft reset didn't solve the reboot issue for me. Whenever the dongle is in, my tablet is liable to reboot, whether it's actively working or idle. Reboots appear to be independent of power mode and whether satellite location service is on or off.
I noticed early on that it also wasn't autorotating, but I think only before the first reboot. I didn't notice any extraordinary battery drain, although I didn't have it on for all that long.

I just got my dongle today but sadly it doesn't seem to be hardly doing anything. It took around a minute or two before it got a lock and it still only got a few of em.
Its not rebooting or anything from what I've seen. Gonna reboot it again and let it settle to see if it does better.

SGS2 Resurrection by mobiletechvideos.com!!!!

So I just wanted to let you guys know that I finally thought that I saw the end of my sgs2's life last week. It was a sad moment. I love this phone. This was something the I thought couldn't be fixed due to it being the emmc blocks being f$cked.
Anyways. to make a long story short. I was contacted by Josh at mobiletechvideos.com and he said "don't worry about it, i'll fix it for you." So here i'm thinking "this guy''s crazy! He can't fix this!" Well. HE DID!!!!!! He fixed what I thought couldn't be fixed! I now have my sgs2 back to life.
I would seriously recommend sending your devices to mobiletechvideos.com if any of you have any issues. They do all sorts of great things to many different devices. He received my device and had it sent out back to me within hours of receiving it!!! Really fast turn-around time. I've never seen anything like it. Go check out their site guys!!!!

Yes Josh is a GREAT guy. I have had many phone conversations with him with questions that turned into interesting conversations. He had fixed my Captivate after I finally bricked it a couple years ago. I HIGHLY recommend his work on the SGS1 and SGS2. I am sure he works on other phones as well.

Why not just buy a replacement and do it yourself? Or buy the part and have someone fix it nearby? It's not that hard. You can buy whole lower assembly and replace it too.

This is exactly what I did. Part took a week or two to arrive -- nothing you can do there, but then changing the part took around 5-10 minutes and most of that was having trouble with the power button not staying put -_- It's really easy and it costs like $10. Totally worth it.

Thanks.
Kinda on the fence about doing it myself I replace the housing on an iPhone 3G and it was a pain in the ass. I'll look into it though.

The part is painfully easily to replace, if you need help I can walk you through it! I just ordered the same part for my GF's i777 so when it gets here I can take pictures of the installation if you want!
That would be perfect.
Looking forward to it.

Thanks for the review Sean. It was an absolute pleasure to help out one of my favorite developers as well as the community at the same time!
Keep up the great work!
I just checked with a local JTAG service. they quoted me $75 ($25 more). i told them that's much more than the price i'd get at mobiletechvideos.com, and to put it in his words, he said "those sites are bull****. they will switch out your parts and tell you they can't fix it."
to that i replied "developers and people from XDA have recommended their service" and he told me "you think i don't know that?" That's where I ended the conversation. I don't trust them at all, if all they do is badmouth people they don't even know anything about.
The guys at Mobiletechvideos are first class. They repaired my hard bricked Captivate, & installed the "unbrickable mod" on it for me. They also repaired my hard bricked Galaxy s2. I'd recommend them to anyone who needed their Samsung smart phone fixed.

What is the support process for getting a device fixed.

I bought an Omate TrueSmart from a backer that didn't want it anymore and looks like the SimCard slot is not working. I tried emailing [email protected] as well as reach out to a contact the original owner had but no response as of yet. Any help would be appreciated.
My model is the DEV 1gb/8gb
thank you,
mike

Well the simcard is not being recognized but I think it's hardware since it supposed to let you take the sim card out via the "spring" motion but it just grabs it without letting me eject it. Otherwise it's fine but really useless outside of the house since I can only do wifi to use it as Bluetooth is not usable to tether to the phone to use it.
How did you put the SIM inside? Notch towards the unit, with chip face up to the screen?

followed the directions online. there is a video of the process. there is just no spring action. in that type of sim insert configuration there should be a way for it to come out when pressing. some phones i have seen that on. i guess there is nobody here from Omate to assist. i have emailed and no response.

See how his sim card pops out and has the springy action mine just goes in with no spring hence i think it's a hardware issue.
I actually wrote the user manual. That's why I was asking.

Oh ok. I didn't have a user manual included when i purchased it. I got the watch in the original cased box with the pillow and the card signed by the CEO as well as the extra battery and screws. I can provide whatever you need as far as proof but I asked the original owner and he advised me he never put a sim in it. I also notice on the lower left corner there is lite leaking from under the sapphire glass.
If I have no hope of achieving any support for the device since I am not the original "kickstarter" backer then I will just sell it since I paid more then the bought it for sure.
thanks again for your quick reply Kuronosan

In that video, the sim is never shown correctly inserted into the TrueSmart. If it springs back out any, it was not pushed in far enough to latch. When fully inserted and latched, no part of the sim chip is still visible outside the slot. To get it out, push it even further in with a tool or fingernail and it will pop out to the point where is shown in Kurt's video and then can be tweezed or scraped out.
Having the sim inserted partially like in the video might work for some TrueSmarts, but it did not for mine. Once I got past that on my watch, my T-Mobile sim started functioning immediately and continued to do so without any issues.

I am sorry yours does not work right. I had hoped I could help since I had been a little misled myself, initially,by the video you linked to.
I got no similar light leaking, though there was a report with a photo of someone else who did, on the Omate forum that is now down I think. There was some speculation that such a light leakage might indicate that individual watch was not likely even vaguely water-resistant.
My only issue on my 1/8/1900 DevEd Nov watch is that it runs at a maximum of 1gHz instead of 1.3gHz. I have resisted testing the water-resistance and have not opened the back yet. I would like it to run at full rated speed, but have not initiated a warranty claim yet because I feel like the Omate folks do not yet have the resources to respond. I suspect that a lot of the watches in the early Feb USA shipment are running at 1gHz max.

Well i tried again this morning and still nothing. I think it's a hardware issue but my guess is that I am SOL as the only response i got today was an email with a PDF of the users guide. Money down the drain ..

You will need to take it apart. Kurt has a video of how to do maintenance.

Well i followed the steps so i can take my sim card out otherwise I would not be able to use my regular phone. The matter is still the issue with the sim card not working and now the lite leakage. Why is there no response from the company that is manufacturing these devices.
If someone tells me listen you were not the original backer so we can't assist you I will forget about contacting them anymore and would just write this off as a loss. It's a shame as it's a really nice device and I spent over $250 for it so it sucks that I am at a loss.
thanks,
Mike

They get hundreds of emails a day. With as small as their staff is, it's two maybe three people having to answer those emails, label and ship units as well as other duties.
As a point of comparison , when I worked as a warranty certified tech for Acer, it took 8-12hrs of sitting on hold just to get them to answer a phone call.
Question, does your SIM look like this when installed;
Orientation
Insertion
Installed
