Can I switch sim cards from one phone to another with no problems? - AT&T HTC One (M7)

I plan on buying a HTC one and keep switching from my S4 and HTC One whenever I feel get bored with either phone. When I switched from a iphone 4s to a S4 the AT&T tech support told me internet will stop working sooner or later and I had to call them to change the internet data for the phone. Will I have any problems switching from a S4 to htc one back and forth?

If you're on a Mobile Share plan than you probably will have problems. They need to register the IMEI of the device to the line using it in order for mobile data to work. I had to go through this a few weeks ago when I got my One and gave my Inspire to my mom. I'm not sure if this is the case if you're on a plan that doesn't share data, though.

Oh I see, thanks. When I made the switch from 4s to an s4 they said the data would work for a couple days and then I'd have to call them

I am on the AT&T share plan but it is just me. I switched between my Note 3 and ONE several times before I sold the Note 3. There was never an issue and with in a few minutes the picture on my account page was updated with the current phone each time I changed...

I think jumping from a 4s to a s4 the difference was the LTE and they told me my sim card was out dated. Thanks for the peace of mind

Use Aria as a dumb phone without data plan possible?

Well, I have jumped ship from the Aria to the Galaxy s2 and wanted to find out if I could give this phone to my mom to be used as a simple "dumb" phone - she has no need for data, texting, or any networking other than simple phone calls - her existing flop phone is craptastic and on its last legs. I have her line as a third number on my account, but it is only voice. If I turned off all the mobile connections and removed the data APN, would ATT be able to detect it as a smart phone and force a data plan onto that number? It is rooted and running CM7 if that matters.
Thanks,
T
Yes, they can tell it's a smartphone, and they will force you into a data plan even with data disabled on the phone. I'm not sure how that can be legal but they do it anyway.
That sucks. Do they key in on the IME number?

I used a smart phone for over 3 years with no data....but went to 2gig for personal reasons. So has my wife. Neither of us have been forced into doing so. They only see if you are actually mobile connected. Just remove the apn and never turn on data. They could use the imei, but that would be more trouble than its worth to sift through them all.

You've been lucky then. I'm merely stating AT&T's official policy that all smartphones must have data plans, regardless of whether you are on contract with them or don't use any data whatsoever. There have been numerous posts over the past year or so here about AT&T customers being forced into data plans. However, there have also been mixed reports about some people being forced into tethering plans when attempting to tether for free through rooted/jailbroken devices, and others have been able to tether constantly without anything happening to them. I have no idea why AT&T's systems detect it for some people and not for others.
Although, even if you do get forced into a data plan, all you have to do is switch the SIM card back into a regular phone then call AT&T to have them remove the data plan and you will either not be charged at all or be charged a very small pro-rated amount. So there's really no risk in trying it.

Their systems already check your IMEI automatically for other reasons. When you move your SIM card into another device, you can log onto the AT&T website and see that it shows the updated device attached to your phone (I think it takes up to 24 hours to update though).

So I guess they are cracking down on the newer people. I have been with at&t since they were cingular so I guess I was and have been grandfathered in for a while.
In short for the OP question.... Do as Drumist says and try the sim in it. If they try and force you, then pull the sim.
On a side note.... At&t are being bullies aren't they. I have read of them trying this for people with international unlocked phones as well. That said.... It's their network to do with as they please.

I've been using smart phones without data plans for nearly 6 years now, starting with the Treo 650, then the LG Incite (WM6), and now the Aria.
When I upgraded the phones, I simply put the old SIM into the new phone - never heard a peep from AT&T.
Maybe I'm lucky, but I have something on my account called "
Smartphone Exclusion", which I believe came with my plan on my first Cingular phone.
I have data opt-out on my feature list as well.

Your experience may vary is the bottom line I guess.

help AT&T 10 unlimited plan got changed?

ok so i bought the UK version of the Galaxy S3...i was told by many since AT&T can't recognize the uk version of the phone, i can sign up for the 10/month unlimited data plan...so i called them yesterday and gave them my dummy phones ime number...everything was good all day phone worked great..but i just got home and i got an email saying that my "iphone" doesn't have the proper data package and changed it to the 30 month/3 gig plan...so i'm confused...did they know i was using a smart phone??
maybe i screwed up not giving them the galaxy s3's ime number?
Doesn't matter what country it's from they can still enter your ImeI and know what you using.
Lets hope AT&T doesn't do as they did with the N1 and go after the medianet users.
You are SOL, it appears in this case your phone IMEI algorithm is in the ATT IMEI sweeps. They have the UK SGS III flagged as an iPhone just as they had the white Galaxy Note flagged as a blackberry.
this is a hit or miss thing. Best thing to do is give them an imei of a dumb phone from AT&T. Been running with that on my GNote.

IMEI ranges are openly available and AT&T has the capability to scan for devices that fall within and then compare those to the data plan. The only thing that has stopped them from doing this wholesale is that it requires a great deal of resources and they have chosen to stick with the money. Otherwise there would not be anyone doing the medianet gambit without an IMEI spoof. The situation with the N1 was different in that they publicly stated they were going after Google and did so, it was a shot across their bow saying do not screw with our subbed phone system by getting into the business of selling unlocked phones to our customers. If they have decided to take this course with the sgs3 you will know soon enough as there will be many reporting that they were kicked to smartphone data but it would not be business as usual up to this time.
The other way that people get caught is that they are flagged at the time of making the switch by the csr and it sounds like this might be what happened here since this is the only report of it so far.

Question about a blacklisted verizon phone

I have a verizon note 2 I bought off cragslist recently its imei is blacklisted on verizon I was wondering if I do the apn hack would it work on att .

Yes, the fact that it's blacklisted simply means that Verizon's database shows it as not being able to be activated. This has no effect on the phones usability on another carrier.

Keep in mind att uses gsm radio and Verizon uses CDMA.
You may run into trouble.
However I believe the Verizon note 2 is a works phone?
Who knows exactly what that means for you.
God bless the American people.
Figures someone who uses barrack Obama as name wouldn't be any help how fitting. The note II has gsm and cdma radios. It's unlocked from the factory so you can throw a t-mobile, AT&T, straight talk ect and it'll work fine. The note supports 1900mhz frequency which is the refarned hspa42 for t-mobile and 3g hspa for at&t

I buy/sell/trade phones and I've run into a couple bad esn phones (no I don't buy them, shady people report them stolen). I actually picked up a Note 2 several months ago. I checked the esn over 611, came back clean, brought it home several hours later to put it on my wife's line. We popped her sim in, it activated, then almost immediately deactivated. After hours on the phone with Verizon they said the seller reported it and there was nothing I could do. We got her a new sim card and reactivated her S3. As I considered my options, the next day I called Verizon and checked the ESN again. The lady said it was clean. I didn't understand and took it to the store to ask a rep. It was explained to me that when a IMEI is blacklisted, it "burns" the sim card you put in it. Since we are in no way faulted on our plan, we were given a new sim card. The rep explained that the phone is blacklisted against that one sim card. So if I put my new sim in, it is now linked to my (clean) account.
Long story short - if you pop in a sim card, it will get zapped. If you get a new one and try again, it SHOULD work fine on Verizon.
I hold no responsibility to what you do or how accurate that info is. It worked for me and was approved by a Verizon rep. Try it or don't.

If a seller reports a phone stolen, they can sell the phone and collect the cash, then turn it into insurance and get a new phone.
They don't care about you actually still being able to use the phone or not, only that they get free money and a new phone.
I bought my Note 2 off of Craigslist in November I checked the number with Verizon. I was told everything was good to go. About two weeks ago I got a call from the Sheriff's office letting me know that I was in possession of a phone that had been stolen directly from one of their stores. I had put my own SIM card in so I never had any issues.

I would assume that you could, Just because Verizon has put the ban hammer down on the phone doesn't necessarily mean that other carriers would also. I guess the best way to know is to give it a shot.

I had a similar issue with a S3 when they first came out. I traded a Razr Maxx for it. I used it for a while until I found a blue one, so I gave it (white) to my wife. About 3 months later I got a call from an investigative department of Verizon. I explained the situation and they allowed me to keep the S3 (unblacklisted) for cooperating with them. I gave them all the info of the person I got it from. That guy called me a week later to warn me that Verizon may be calling, lol. Turns out the person be bought it from had stolen several of these off a Fed Ex truck before they reached the store.

S4 still active on another acct? Help!

Im not sure if this is where I should be asking this question but I have searched the threads and cant really find the answers Im looking for so here goes and Im going to run through my whole scenario. I have acct with verizon with 2 "dumb phones" on it. I am doing an AOL shortly to aquire a Unlimited data acct. I purchased a used Verizon Galaxy S4 a while back which I was going to switch to Straight talk but decided to get the Unlimited instead (no options where I live) so I have been basically using as a tablet since. When I first bought the phone I checked the MIED and ESN on line as well as if reported lost/stolen...all came up good. Then I called Verizon to check and was told it was good and clear. As I said I have been using for a bit as a tab while I figured what I was going to do. Now that I have found an Unlimited and will aquire it shortly I called Verizon again to make sure all is good and can just activate phone when I get other acct. They told me #s are good and clear but phone is still active on another acct. How can this be? I have had it for at least a few months...what can I do to clear this? Can I simply pop in the sim from the Unlimited acct I am getting or can I get a cheap 4G LTE phone, activate it and then pop sim in the S4? NEED SOME ADVICE HERE! Thanks.

Sims are tied to accounts, so if you're getting the account and the sim it should work in any clean verizon lte phone. I can't be 100% sure on that of course, but I'm fairly certain it will work fine.

Nexus 9 on Verizon

I know it has the radios, but has anyone been able to activate it on Verizon? They couldn't do it for me directly, so we tried activating a different tablet, cutting down the SIM, and sticking it into the 9. No dice...the cut SIM works fine in my Droid Maxx so I know it's not the the cut SIM, and the number shows up in my "about tablet" so the sim is being recognized, but there's no service.
Anyone have any luck yet and/or suggestions?

I sell Verizon, had my first customers come in with these tablets and tried the same thing (activated the SIM in an iPad). SIM in the Nexus will read the IMEI, but it shows NO network signal. On the phone with tier two tech support right now. Will report back when I have an answer!

this thread is of great interest to me. Since this will really determine if I get a N9 LTE.
Also find the troubles interesting since a simple sim card swap worked with the N7 and is currently working with the N6.
I know Verizon won't do anything officially but doesn't stop us from getting our 6's running.

btw opened a case with google see if they know anything with verizon.
Looking into your account, I saw that you had contact support previously today (Case: 9-41030000*****) in regards to being unable to activate your Nexus 9 LTE tablet with Verizon. I wanted to let you know that your case has been escalated to the next tier of support and is currently being reviewed. You can expect a reply by email from either the previous agent or the Specialist who has reviewed your case, within the next 1 - 2 business days.

FYI, someone just mentioned it seems like their radio state is off. I noticed this too...i installed the 4G switcher app just to see if I could get more info from it, and it defaults that the radio state is off.
I did get it to seem to turn on once or twice but it didn't actually do anything.
I'm just hoping this isn't something stupid where verizon has decided not to sell the nexus 9 so they are blocking it from their network.
I used this app to dial *#*#4636#*#* to access the radio when it was off. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.modoohut.dialer
Google Play Chat
Figured I'd try to chat with someone from Google...they don't know of any reason why the device shouldn't work on Verizon. Here's the transcript - http://pastebin.com/ZuhwvnAY

Yea the 4G switcher app gives the exact same info, and same thing showed when I tried what you did...seems like the radio is turned off, and it won't turn on.
My first thought is maybe google has the devices deactivating the radio when it detects Verizon but then they would have done the same with the 6 one would think.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
I think the device needs an update to work .. Would be good if someone on sprint try it too

Well the Google Play support guy says there's nothing on their end that he's aware of for why it wouldn't work on Verizon...I wouldn't see Google doing that, but I COULD see Verizon doing it haha.
One thing I am holding onto is that I ordered this the day it went on sale on the Play Store, so its just possible Verizon hasn't done something it needs to do to allow the connection. Its all conjecture for now though lol.
