S3 broken glass and thoughts - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just broke my glass after a 50 cm drop on wooden floor, so I was thinking - are all phones that weak or is it just the S3 and maybe some other models. I have seen too many S3's with broken screen just where mine broke (top left corner), so I was thinking after I get it repaired - should I sell it and move on to a more rugged model/brand. What are you thought? Thanks.

Same here, had a phone tumbeld from 1st flor down the stairs and got without a scratch but a fall like yours costed me 200$

Yes, all modern phones have screens that will break easily. That's why people sell bumpers to protect them, £3 on a case saves you £150 on a new screen.

I have a £2 fake leather flip case on mine, was running down the stairs and it flew out my pocket and bounced down the wood stairs and hasn't even got a mark on it, anyway, as for your question, it depends how much it costs to fix.

When I had the S3, I dropped it a lot of times screen down on different materials (concrete, asphalt, etc) and I never had so much as a scratch on my screen
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

it looks like the glass on your phone' screen was glued in a forced/tensioned position
I bought my S3 second-hand, with broken display, bought separate display(with shattered glass only) and fixed it, both screen glass and reassembly - with alot of patience, a hot air gun/hair drier and a few bucks you can fix it yourself, its super easy + the achievement feeling is amazing
after I fixed mine I unwillingly dropped it on concrete from waist height(~110cm), back cover and battery separated from phone on impact(nasty drop), luckily nothing shattered, only the rim scratched at the bottom... yeah, a cover helps, tho I think in that particular drop it would've focused the impact force on the board or screen, resulting in more significant damage
still dont have a cover, living life on the edge here )

One month after I bought my s3, i placed it on charging with it's charging cable lying on the floor,
My sister rushed out, getting her foot in the cable and giving my s3 a great fall....
The silver lining broke from 2 places (top and bottom) but my phone remained scratch free....
It's about a year now, and my phone hasn't experienced a fall again... :victory:

[Q] Dropped it, replace the bezel or exchange from ATT?

So I dropped my GS3, thankfully the screen is fine, but, here's the kicker, it seems to have landed on all of the corners around the bezel and only the bezel, not even the back plate. I would like to replace it because its just chipped black plastic around my brand new phone, and it seems that there are several bezels on ebay, but apparently, you need to purchase the entire front assembly, because it is impossible to separate the bezel from the super amoled display according to a video on youtube showing the parts of the GS3 screen
The bezel is just attached to the plastic frame, its cheap and should be easy to replace, but how do I deal with the adhesive? If I buy the bezel and send it to a phone repair shop, will it even be worth risking my ~$300 screen to replace this $20 plastic bezel?
I've only owned this phone for a few days on a 2 year contract with ATT, I didn't buy insurance yet, and I'm fairly certain that Samsung doesn't cover drops, is there anyway of getting a replacement? I'm not familiar with ATT's policy for phones less than 30 days old...

Call in and ask if you can still get insurance. And then wait a day and tell ATT what happen. I think you can still add it but it will be a 200 deductible.

The 200 dollar deductible seems a bit much for just the bezel, and I'm not sure if I can get insurance for it, technically it shouldn't be covered
Why not just get a case, skin, or one of those metal bumpers?
I know it doesn't fix the problem, but at least it may hide it enough to not bother you as much.
I have been trying to get a good case, but although the cheap ones that have already come out all shot from Hong Kong, and and all the legit cases like a seidio I preordered are not shipping yet

WARNING! The S4 is extremely fragile!

Hello,
. About 3 weeks ago I got an S4. That makes me the 4th of 5 people I know with them. The first three all have cracked glass. I thought they were just abusing their phones. Last night at a concert my phone slipped out of my pocket while sitting. It fell a foot and a half. I am now the fourth to have a cracked screen. A foot and a half. I will save you the stories of what my Motorola Droid and DNA took without any damage at all. I just paid $600 for this phone, I'm not paying $200 to get the glass replaced.
The 5th person is my wife. She accepted the S4 on performance recommendations. Hers is not cracked yet, but she only got it 2 days ago, we'll see how long it lasts. Why yes I could buy a nice case like an otterbox to protect the phone, but then why would I buy a thin, lite weight phone? Why didn't Samsung just use some real material such as gorilla glass instead of the cheap crap?
I am truly disappointed in this product.
The S4 has gorilla glass 3, the latest release of gorilla glass. Did any of these people you mentioned have cases on their phone?
Cheap crap? You realize they used Gorilla Glass 3? I've dropped mine caseless with no issues.

accually gorilla glass has been tested, not with just phones, and they're prone to be anti-scratch, but they are compacted and thinner then most cellphone glass screens, so even if it is gorrilla glass 3, i might not scratch as bad, but since its compacted glass, and slightly thinner, its prone to crack and break easier(under circumstances), hence why its a thin phone, some smartphones are thick cause the glass and parts, to make a compacted phone its almost taking the risk of becoming fragiler the thinner it gets, like mica, but more expensive lol
Otterbox Commuter Case....sweet as colors and really nice case, get yourself one!

That is very interesting. I am wondering if yours is some of the early run phones? Up here in Canada, I haven't heard of any cracked glass yet. And from what I have seen, the S4 has a metal ring around it or is in a metal case now something like an Iphone style. I am wondering if the clearance are too tight and that caused it to crack. We may see a second gen phone if this is the problem and more have the same issues.
Now for the other post about scratches. Ya, I have a very slight scratch on mine. I don't by all of this damage, scratch resistance glass. Although I have an S3, they say that they tried scratching the screen with a key and it didn't scratch. A key has dull edges and aren't always in a pocket with a phone. Mine was scratched with a piece of paper. As that is all that was in that pocket.
Still fragile
As I said, I know 5 people now with S4's. All have damaged screens from minor issues. The only one that doesn't is only 3 days old.
I had a case on it but have to get a new one because the case doesn't fit with the QI charger receiver in it. Mine fell 1.5 feet, I was sitting in a chair at a concert and it slid out of my pocket. 1.5 feet, gorilla glass should be able to take that without issue, but that is definitely not the case with this phone.
If I wanted a big, thick phone from an otterbox I'd have bought a big thick phone.
i know 4 people with S4's who have had them since launch, and none of them are broken.
one of them even just uses the holster shell case.
then again, i don't think any of my friends are really irresponsible with their $650 pieces of technology.

Lol it is gorilla glass.
Even so, gorilla glass is just glass after all. Glass is brittle, it will break upon shock.
If you want a phone that isn't as fragile as these new smartphones, you might want to get one of those old Nokia phones that has plastic screens.
i love how people cry when they drop a phone and it breaks.. like what are you expecting? I know it has gorilla glass but that doesnt mean it wont survive everything. you forget its GLASS.... it is insanely fragile and can be affected by many many factors that will cause it to either survive or not survive even the smallest of drops. temperature, humidity, height, weight load behind it, fracture point and the list goes on.
it is glass, it will break, dont be surprised when you drop it and it cracks. but yes gorilla glass should help reduce them but you have no idea what kind of stress factors went on in that glass.
remember, cars have airbags, have made car insanely safe for people yet people still get injuries and even death from car accidents. airbags cant save you every time. same goes for gorilla glass.
Here is a video from Samsung showing the S4 endurance test. http://youtu.be/K4f9gQ7b6Gg There is a thread in the Verizon S3 forum that was similar to this one. Some people said the phone was bullet proof, some said it was fragile. I think it depends on how the phone lands on a hard surface as to whether it breaks or not, hence the discrepancy.
Not sure I agree with the perspective, since a lot of folks are not engineers, or may have had more resilient phones (once with less glass) before this. Case in point, the S3 handles drops better, but a relative point and both will crack on a hard surface and if the impact is an acute angle (a corner). The more surface glass and less bezel, the more likely a display crack when kinetic energy needs displaced (a drop).
On top of that reality of physics, Samsung have gone way out of their way to pimp how tough the S4 is lately. Perhaps giving some consumers a false sense of security, along with the Gorilla glass misnomers (assumptions it will not crack).
Has there ever been a phone releases without people complaining about how weak it is? I read the same things about my galaxy nexus.
Sometimes they break. It happens. I've dropped mine from shoulder height without a case... Only a nick... And do you know what that means?
Nothing. It means absolutely nothing. With such a small sample size I am unwilling to make any sweeping claims about all S4s. Unfortunately I may be in the minority.

same here... mine fell out of my pocket and cracked instantly.
Wait so because your glasd cracked all of a sudden all s4's are fragile and break easily? No, it all depends on how you drop it. If you drop any phone face first it'll crack.

I must have not read the line that said S4's are shatter proof.
Seems the only absolute in all this is glass can break if you drop it.

You probably need the Active S4, I have pretty thin tpu case on mine, dropped it a few times. No problems here. Always get some kind of case.

LG V10 cracked after 1 month from chair hight drop

My LG V10 got a crack on the left steel rail after falling from chair hight. My phone was in my bag when it fell out and landed on a cement floor. It was plugged into a battery pack so the cord slowed it down some. I thought it would be fine from how durable its said to be but it has a single crack on the lower half. Not getting another lg phone that is said to be durable according to their standards. Don't have insurance because of how durable it was said to be or have a case. But is there a cheap fix for just the glass?

no warranty?
They're several disassembly guides on Youtube, just follow one of those and buy the part off Ebay or someplace similar. Also, it will probably be much easier to just buy the entire screen assembly than just replace the glass. That said I've also dropped my face down on concrete when it fell out of my jacket pocket as I was sitting down and it survived. On the bright side if At&t is your carrier the cost of a replacement screen is still cheaper than your deductible would have been and the repair seems fairly easy.
The durability test is done with the screen facing flat down not on the corners.
No product is indestructible. V10 is no exception.
I still recommend people case their phone and put a screen protector on, $20 for extra protection on a $700 phone is well worth it in my opinion.
Lol if you want a v10 pm me

Bumper scratches

I see on some youtube videos and pictures elsewhere that the bumper is easily scratched. Are you guys worried?
This was of no concern on z3c whereas that was made of plastic.
Anyone?
Im on a beach holiday in spain 7 days in. Sand all over the place and no scratches yet. I always make sure i have nothing in the pocket the phone goes in. No screen protector either. I do want to buy a screen protector when i can find a decent one.
Sent from my F5121 using Tapatalk
Don't know what you are referring to with the bumper? But my screen have scratches and it have only been alone in my pocket, seems like it scratches very easily ?
The bumper scratches like crazy. I bought the black X thinking even if I scratch it then they wont stand out.
Got the phone yesterday and it has more scratches than my previous G3 in 1,5 years. I went cycling and after 1 mile I took it out of my pocket to find an few little scratches near the camera button. Didn't do anything out of the ordinary so I have no idea how they got there.
Then I went cycling again and smacked the phone out of my hand due to the beyond stupid headphone jack placement . It fell and the screen was unharmed where it should have had scratches. The bumper ofc was scratched more then it was a few hours prior. Needless to say I am ordering a case.

Gorilla glass?

Not sure how my wife managed to do this (probably happened in the purse), but yesterday the display was clean. Today - this.. Not even 2 weeks old phone.
Ohhh man that's not good. I think it is gorilla glass 3 on this device.
I don't know what say....
Have you tried looking up prices to change the screen?
After 2 weeks it should obviously not be like that
The professional replacement will cost at least half the price of a new phone. I will wait for more serious damage and buy a new phone once prices come down. Repair just doesn't make financial sense I'm afraid. I'm just puzzled how could have this happened, in literally less than a day. It should be Gorilla Glass 5 and per this video, even hammer can't damage it
U probably has dropped ur phone or something on the road, the screen must have taken a drop and drag on a rough surface. Cause even it this is gorilla glass 3, that is pretty tough too, it cannot get scratched in a purse, ya some minor scratches can be there but these are really deep scratches.
Nope, no dropping at all. We don't know how it happened, I just noticed it today (yesterday the glass was clean). If it dropped and dragged on a flat hard surface, whole display would be scratched. Protection case would take some damage too, but it's like new. The damage of the display is along one side only with a few scratches reaching further. Really strange.
Need a billfold case. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000029291661.html

Oh man that looks painful.
Glass is glass. It has it's limitations.
You really should have used a tempered glass, that would protect the display man.
A3 rocks a gorila glass 5 btw, as mentioned by many reviewers. Gsmarena also says that.
After some "investigation" we suspect our 1.5 years old son to be the "destructor" (though we still don't know how exactly he managed to do it). I haven't used tempered glass protectors for years as I didn't have pretty much a single scratch on any of the phones and they add unnecessary bulkiness . Lesson learned, it's a good idea to have it around small kids
I was so confident about the gorilla glass. That's why i didn't use any tempered glass. But, after 2 days, i noticed a scratch as light reflected on the screen. Then i quickly bought a glass. I'm sure the scratch was from my pocket.
Many glass protections is made in China.
I checked the price of a display replacement in a 3rd party proffesional service center using genuine parts (they can't replace just the top glass layer), it is 155eur. Price of the new phone is currently about 170-180eur in my country.
@ _mysiak_ you can buy for few dollar touch glass panel, you just need to change that....

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't know anyone who would take the risk and replace only the top glass panel. I saw few instructional videos and it requires quite good tools and skills, most service centers in my country simply won't do it. Even if they did, the price paid for work will be probably close to the cost of a new complete display :\
Ah! See wahala! From the picture its evident that the phone fell and scrubbed a hard surface. No purse could scratch even a gorrilla glass 1 and dent the frame like that. Or else your wifes purse is a construction site on its own.
Just like car particulars & drivers license, after i buy a new phone i must put on a case & screen guard for rest of mind.
Anything that has level 6 of hardness on Mohs scale can scratch the phone. To put it simple, anything that is as hard as sands (or harder) can scratch you phone screen.
Hi, I also got a pretty deep scratch. I don't know how it happend. I'm really careful (kept my nexus 5 from 2013 to 2019 without any (or really light) scratches. This is really weird the phone didn't fall. :/
