Locked Bootloader? NOPE!!! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

I have been hearing around the xda community that this wonderful device will be joining the blacklisted devices over at at&t and Verizon. I am referring to the bootloader. Any good news out there?

Oops. Does this belong in questions and answers ?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app

Yes it does go in Q&A.
There are working models at best buy. I'm not 100% sure how you would check...probably just boot into the bootloader and see what it says.

The T-Mobile version boot loader is usually unlocked.

Think we will have to wait and see really.
Not sure when pre orders will ship, but we should be able to find out April 11th
Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I'm not buying until I know for sure. Even then I might go with HTC since KNOX Security sucks.

I'm gonna tell T-Mobile as soon as I get mine that everything's working fine, don't want a replacement, but note that knox was already tripped when I got it. Ha ha
Not sure how they can dispute that later for warranty issues.
Even though I'm probably not going to root it or anything for a while.

T-Mobile WILL have LOCKED BL
Guys here
This time around it looks like AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile will have S5 with locked bootloader. (Only Sprint's S5 will have unlocked BL).
1. AT&T started with S4 and continued the tradition there after (G2, N3 etc.) (Also no dev edition AFAIK)
2. T-Mobile started with LG G Flex and looks like it will continue the tradition with S5. (Source) (Also no dev edition AFAIK)
3. Verizon started who knows when? (At least verizon is nice enough to have Dev edition, albeit expensive as hell).
What does all this mean?
Well you can't have "traditional" custom recovery so that means NO ASOP, NO custom Kernels etc.
You can have a recovery called "Safestrap" which will allow you to flash only TW based ROMs and simple MODs such as bootanimations but nothing more.

That is possible.
Not a confirmation that the T-Mobile variant with be locked though.
With the most recent update to the s4 they could have made it locked but they didn't as far as I can tell. Just has knox on it.
Still will need to wait and see I guess.

Everyone knows development only really takes off after about 6 months to a year. Give the devs time to crack the possible locked bootloader.

I got a tmobile s4 and note 3 both with updated 4.4.2 bootloaders and they are not locked. what att do or verizon has nothing to go with tmobile. as far as the lg flex that was lg decision not tmobile as they are all locked. knox has nothing to do with a locked bootloader. I do not see tmobile locking the bootloader

Tmobile decided to lock z1s bootloader. Trend is pointing in the wrong direction if you ask me. Hopefully they don't lock it.

T-Mobile made Alcatel lock the OneTouch Fierce and they'll do it some more apparently.
T-Mobile Secure Lock.

Haven't seen that on any device so far and the article is almost a year old.

Alcatel OneTouch line are because of Secure Lock, and are still modern phones they are selling. You have the burden of proof on your hands. I for one wouldn't buy a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5 before knowing 100% it's unlocked or unlockable. Besides... the Note 3 is still unlocked and quite a comparable device!

We'll see in a few weeks.

[Q] Verizon's S3- can it be rooted?

Looked through quite a few pages and haven't seen this asked. Unfortunately I can't put up with the call problems of the Gnex. I just use my phone too much for work. Was considering getting the s 3 under warranty replacement if they allow it. Does anyone know if can be rooted and unlocked?

Good luck getting the S3 as a warranty replacement because its not going to happen, the phone hasn't been released no one has one to mess with or anything so as of now it is unknown. If it was rooted I'm sure it would have been posted already all over different forums

Yeah guys/girls at Verizon stores are stupider than my door knob, example went in to the store today to get a 4G LTE sim card for my thunderbolt that's been sitting in my night stand and now my sister wants to use and the lady and guy both working said that not only I needed to bring the device in but now there's a fee for the sim card :what:
I attempted to get the S3 as a replacement and from my understanding the only way it would be possible is if there was a certified like new device available.

First of all, the phone has already been released in Europe and parts of Asia for some time. Second, a while back somebody leaked the official samsung software rom for the S3, and hackers made quick work of it and had a root method within a day (http://www.ubergizmo.com/2012/05/samsung-galaxy-s3-rooted-stock-rom-leaked/). If you google "samsung s3 root" you will find lots of pages telling you how to root. Here's one example of such a site: http://theunlockr.com/2012/05/26/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-s3-smartphone/
I know people are saying that you cannot get a S3 as a replacement but in my situation they did give me an early upgrade to a RAZR Maxx. I had to pay 200 for it but I at least got a phone with good signal. I asked about the S3 as an option and the csr said I could if I was willing to wait. I had another upgrade coming so I had already preordered the S3. My wife is getting the RAZR MAXX and she is thrilled.

from what i've heard all of us in north america (canada, America, will get the exact slab of hardware, Also at&t's source was just released tonight so sit tight maybe by the end of this week its gonna be rooted!)
Here is proof that phones get rooted before release all the time. ATT, Sprint, and T-Mobile S3s' all have been rooted before anyone has the phone. I'm sure that Verizon's is just around the corner.

Verizon VS AT&T Galaxy S3... Which is easier to root/ return to complete stock?

Both AT&T and Verizon appear to be equal in almost every aspect in my area( Coverage, cost of the plan I need, subsidized phone cost), so that leaves the 1 question that really matters:
Which is easier both to root, and even more importantly, unroot to the point I can still use my warranty?

In most places Verizon has the best service. While traveling your less likely to experience drops with Verizon. AT&T also locked their bootloader. I'm not a Verizon fan but if I'm going to have a cell phone I'd like to have service wherever I go.
We are just a few little steps away from a functioning SafeStrap, so you can root, debloat and run custom ROMs. We just cant unlock the bootloader or run custom kernels yet.

Not hating on SS because it's a valuable tool for those who can't do it other ways. But you certainly are not debloating anything by leaving a full stock install in a "safe partition" and then running your choice of other ROMs.

Agreed. I just switched to Verizon from Sprint and fortunately I'm on MDK but I'm not down with these policies going forward. For the locations I spend 99.9 percent of my time in, T mobile has nearly equal coverage and fewer dropped calls in my area. I'll be migrating to T mobile at the end of my contract on in the event I hose my phone and can't stomach being on ME7.

I don't know about "the norm." But I do agree that coverage and signal are most important and fortunately VZW isn't the only game in town with decent coverage. However, I've been modding phones since 11/2007 and it's something I enjoy. I'll be dammed if I stick with a carrier who aims to prevent me from enjoying one of my hobbies.

But im unsure as to how much you can do to your safe partition with SS because it's intended to be your safety net when you screw up.

I love my S4 personally, but that's because I got it early when the Loki exploit worked. I don't like Verizon, though, but I'm on a plan with my parents still so I can't complain since I'm not paying. I plan on switching to T-Mobile and staying off-contract after I leave my parents' plan.
It is my opinion that the locked bootloaders showing up amongst carriers is a result of people bricking their phones and returning them for warranty replacement. I think the locked bootloaders make that much more difficult to do on accident. It is not difficult to see that carriers monitor XDA and see what people do.

ROOT / SU Question / Mega 6.3 / USA / AT&T

Anyone,
I'm not an android noob, but I left Android a few years back (2.3.3 / 2.3.4) due to work changing to iPhones for data encryption reasons. I came back to Android when more Samsung phones started supporting ODE (on device encryption). I would like to root my phone and have done so on other Android phone's using SuperOneClick, CWM, etc.
I am reading that there is a secure boot loader on the AT&T version of this phone in USA, so I am screwed in gaining root access to the device? I'd really like to delete all this bull**** bloatware they've installed... and a tethering app without using the carrier option.
Can anyone help?
I have the AT&T version as well. I'm not 100% sure that the bootloader is the reason for no root yet. Other phones have locked bootloaders and can still be rooted.
Running custom roms might be another story. I get the impression that because this is not a "mainstream" phone that it does not get top priority. For example, the Moto X on AT&T has a locked bootloader and that's rooted already, but it's a very popular phone.
Hopefully we'll get some love sooner rather than later. I would be happy with root along with an easy way to go back to stock.

I purchased the Straight Talk kit yesterday and you have the option of use Tmobile or AT&T by switching the sim card. if your bill it too high try Straight Talk.
Thx I thought about it but have 2 phones my second one is a s blaze but not unlocked so that person would lose out on service which is needed.

I think we're getting to desperate for our own good before we could even get some common sense grounds to pop in. A link looking like they is too suspicious and couldn't possibly be trustworthy. Just rely on the ones that are well known.
As a matter of fact, it's really all on the hands of Verizon. Whenever they release it, they do it. Either them or though the Xperifirm software...

lollipop is coming guys. :fingers-crossed:
Holy crud, went through this with the old LG Spectrum, at least we finally got custom ROMs for them.
Another reason for VZW to allow bootloader unlock, it would keep the masses happy and the masses would not have to wait for VZW to add all the bloatware to the ROMs.
With lollipop being more locked down and root exploit resistant we need the bootloader unlock more than ever now.
Oh, VZW Droid Turbo to receive lollipop in June.

My big questions are:
1. When (of course)?
2. Will it include VoLTE?
3. Will it include functional Visual Voicemail?
4. Will it fix auto-bluetooth functions?
I'm back to using a *@#% iPhone 6 for now...when connected to bluetooth in my 2015 Volvo the damned Z3v would call the wrong number. I'd pick someone from my "recent" call log and it would dial some random person in my address book instead about a third of the time. Not even someone I'd called in years. That's just totally unacceptable.
I really want my son's LG G2. Maybe I can trick him into a trade?
verizon blows... this device is tight, verizon is not.
