Touchscreen / Creaking issues - Info collection thread - Xperia Z2 Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there !
It seems many Z2s have creaking and touchscreen problems, sometimes developing after some days of use.
In addition, a lot of Z2 Tablets seem to suffer of a warped, bent chassis: Just peek along the sides of the Z2, check if it's bent, curved.
My Z2 had NO creaking and NO touchscreen issues right from the start - but both problems came up after about two days of use, both issues showed up at the same time. And my Z2 is a "banana" Z2, it's chassis is bent, putting the device under constant physical tension.
Maybe there's a connection; let's find out !
---
Please reveal the following:
1) Z2 Tablet model (Wi-Fi/LTE, RAM size, serial number*, date of manufacture - see below)
2) Firmware version
3) Color (maybe different backplanes cause different stress on the chassis)
4) Market (Europe, USA, Asia, etc. - have a look at the box the Z2 came in; there's an information about the country it was made for)
5) Country of manufacture (I guess it's China for all Z2s produced - but you never know...)
6) Days of use
7) Bent ?
8) Touchscreen problems ?
9) Creaking/loose feel at the bezel (especially at the right hand side, in landscape mode) ?
10) Only if you dare: Bubbles emerging from the bezel area (not speakers) if submerging the Z2 ?
* Serial number: You don't need to mention the full number. Just have a look at the sticker on the box, "SN –": Example: 430101690000142
"141" is the serial number.Replace the last two ciphers with an "x". Result: "1XX". If your serial number is "54321", use this: "543XX"
This way, you don't have to reveal your full serial number - but we still get an idea of the production batch number.
Thank you.
Date of manufacture (thanks to LitoNi for pointing me to this):

Next Z2 just arrived. Again, a "banana", creaking at the left (!) bezel side right out of the box, slightly larger gaps between aluminum and plastic at the side faces than my first Z2, so build quality appears to be even lower. :/
Serial number is 2410, serial of my first Z2 is 142 (funny, same numbers, just reversed) - so there's more than 2000 Z2 produced between first and second device - but still the same problem. :/
Instant return to Sony.

I know you want to keep this thread clean but when I talked to Sony today they said that I have to send it to service, while it seems like you just get yours replaced? Is that the case and how do you work your magic? ;<

If the problem is still their send it back to sony asking for replacement or money back . Its no magic just stop smoking ,start living well.

Skogstoken ist partly right...
I bought the Z2s in Germany via Sony's online shop.
After fighting with the first problems, I made a major mistake: I called the "Sonymobile hotline" in Düsseldorf.
You can fully skip that step: Incompetent, not willing to listen, telling me there's no exchange of defective devices, just repair. They even told me to ask my dealer, not able to understand the fact they ARE my dealer... Complete waste of time.
Then I used my Sony account for getting information about returning the device - and a phone number in Frankfurt popped up.
I called them, they offered to send a replacement device at no additional costs.
Presently, I am waiting for TNT to pick up the Z2 for return.
So Skogstoken and others: Find the phone number of Sony's repair/return service, talk to them, skip Sonymobile.

I'm very disappointed

i wouldnt call this bent if it already came out of the box like that.. ive had and seen a bunch of xperias z/ z1/ z2/ z ultra/ zl like the picture of the op. These phone are made too thin and theres nothing you can do about it other than blame the machines that made these frames. Basically, this so called "bent" is unavoidable, i wouldnt call this "bent" if its unavoidable, probably 1/100 devices you will find one that is perfectly straight. btw, the frame could be straight when it was made but the plastic coating might have made the frame bent like that.
i went to the store today to see the demo units of the tablet z2 and z2 and both of them are like that. I also decided to purchase the tablet z2 on spot as it just looks too amazing and i needed one for school. Got home and realize the bottom right corner the bezel is loose, its basically pushable...
im exchanging it tomorrow for a new one and see if the same problem still persist, if not i think i will pass this tablet for now... wish me luck :good:

LitoNi: It's not just a cosmetic issue. The bent chassis seems to cause a constant stress on the device, which at some point of time gives way.
My first Z2 (the one I still use while waiting for Sony to send my third device) was stronger bent right after unpacking. NO creaking issues at that time. After about two days, the device got "straighter" - at the same time, the creaking issues started.
So it seems that something inside the Z2 doesn't hold up against the constant stress caused by the bent chassis. This might be the reason for creaking and maybe for some touchscreen-related issues, too.
I don't know that for sure, I am just guessing. That's one of the reasons for collecting some data - to find out if there's any connection between that issues.
Many customers reported having an absolutely straight Z2; so a bent chassis should not be a common, let alone acceptable sight.
If we don't return distorted devices to Sony, nothing will change to the better.

[Q] Is the dust under screen problem still there?

After a lot of searching, I have narrowed down to Optimus One as my first Android buy. The only thing that bothers me is the dust under the screen problem. Since I live in Delhi, India, which is a generally dusty place, it scares me even more.
Is it a safe buy despite this? Has the problem been rectified by LG?
Well my house is extremely dusty and this is why my laptop is hardly working anymore because it's so full of dust... there's nothing I can do about it, because this is how this city is. But my LG hasn't had any dust under the screen, only on top.
I don't have any dust under screen of my phone too..
I bought my 01 two weeks ago and it already has dust under the screen, so I do not think this problem has been rectified.
been using the phone for about a month, and no problems here
no problem for me too. been using for 3 months, and always carry in my pocket, which is rather dusty.
Bought mine in the first week of january. Its got loads of dust under the screen. The manufacture date is of november 2010 and firmware is 2.2
I think the newer model which has a revised hardware ( with the sd card slot on the left hand side of the phone) does not have this problem. The older model has the sd card hidden under the back cover and the back cover has to be removed to insert our remove the card.
You can also recognize the new model with its cover box. It is white in color and bigger than the older box which is small and black in color.
In simple terms check the manufacture date. Also buy a phone without insurance or hw related problem (dust under the screen) will not dealt by the lg service center
I think it just effects certain batches as I have the one with sd slot under the cover, and have no dust at all after 3 months.

Try looking at the screen in broad daylight under the sun with the screen turned off.
I used to think the same until I looked at the screen in the outdoors.
The dust goes in though the physical keys.

Hello!
Just bought Optimus one in Slovenia a week ago. Dust under screen in lower right corner. You can see it in under the sun.
What did you guys do about that? Is it better to open it up yourself and clean it and possibly put something on the lower part of the screen to prevent dust getting in (tape?, piece of foam?) or take it back to the shop? If they're just gonna clean it, it will happen again, can they ''fix'' it? Otherwise it's a great phone, but this issue is annoying.
Dont open the phone your self. You will void your phone warranty. Better take it to the service center and tell them to put a piece of tape at the bottom portion of the screen. if they dont do it, dust will re enter the screen area.
hmm i have a custom Rom on it but I guess they probably won't check that stuff for this kind of repair...
I think this may be just with some countries a lot of people are reporting no problems, so if you had red that indi optimus had this problem you could be another.
no dust went inside my o1

survey: purchase place and N10 condition

I find it puzzling that there are so many reports of hardware problems with the Nexus 10, and yet just as many (or more) people report that their Nexus 10 has no hardware problems at all (mine does not). I've been wondering if the difference depends on where you buy your Nexus 10.
For example, I've read quite a few posts where people say that their Nexus 10 box had been opened when they received it. The box comes taped shut and the tape says something like "do not accept if tape is broken". But many people post, "The tape was broken on mine, which is kind of weird." Perhaps these are the people who have hardware problems with their Nexus 10s?
Maybe the people who received boxes with broken tape bought Nexus 10s that had been returned because of problems, and then were resold by a seller who Just Didn't Care.
Or maybe certain distributors at certain times got bad batches.
Or maybe it's both.
Or maybe it's neither and the problems are random. But if there does turn out to be a pattern, it would be good to know - especially for people deciding where to buy. I'll start:

Survey: Place of Purchase and Condition of Your Nexus 10?
Place of Purchase (specify online or brick-and-mortar): I got my Nexus 10 at a brick-and-mortar Walmart store in Northampton, MA.
Purchase Date: February 10, 2013.
Tape on Box Broken: No. (definitely brand new)
Condition of Nexus 10:
Hardware: No hardware problems of any kind. There is no light bleed, no blemishes in the display (no lines, no dead pixels, no scratches), no case problems, no WiFi issues, the screen is very bright at full brightness, and battery life is good. It never gets especially hot to the touch.
Software: In the last week or two, it started rebooting occasionally (every 5-7 days, maybe less), and sometimes the browser crashes (this is more frequent, but nothing like what was happening with the Asus TF700T, which I returned). I've been loading more and more software on it, and I particularly love widgets. I may have gone overboard because I had neither of these problems until very recently. Maybe I should remove some stuff.
Place of Purchase: Google Play Store
Purchase Date: Not sure, maybe a week after launch
Tape on Box Broken: No
Condition of Nexus 10:
Hardware: Minor light-bleed in 2 corners. NFC with Google Wallet is hit or miss in most stores (I think it only worked fine in 1 out of 3 stores)
Software: Very few random reboots.
Place of Purchase: Staples - Brandon, Florida
Purchase Date: 2/22
Tape on Box Broken: No
Condition of Nexus 10: Mint
Hardware: Minor light bleed from lower corner opposite volume rockers, minor back creeks
Software: Rooted on day 1... can't say lol

Place of Purchase: Staples - Philadelphia
Purchase Date: 1/20
Tape on Box Broken: No
Condition of Nexus 10: Mint
Hardware - Minor little area of yellow light bleed lower left. Not seen unless full brightness on black screen.
Software - Never a random reboot yet.. Currently at a 140hr uptime of writing this.
Place of Purchase: Google Play Store
Purchase Date: Launch day
Tape on Box Broken: Yes (only one of the two pieces, I think)
Condition of Nexus 10:
Hardware: Extremely minor light bleed in bottom corners with light bleed test app in dark room.
Software: Daily lockups on stock, usually while browsing.

Place of purchase: play store
Tape on box broken: yea one was broken
Condition:
Minor light bleed in one corner
Software: no reboots
Note. On the first day I checked the battery usage. Had been turned on for 7 minutes before shipped to my house. I did not check the sign me in option

Survey: Place of Purchase and Condition of Your Nexus 10?
Place of Purchase (specify online or brick-and-mortar): Brick-and-mortar Walmart in California
Purchase Date: early January 2013
Tape on Box Broken: No. (definitely brand new)
Condition of Nexus 10:
Hardware: Light light bleed in lower right corner (diagonal from buttons), but definitely an acceptably low level. No other problems, condition was and still is great.
Software: Rebooted twice on the first day, with 4.2.1. Both times where while simultaneously listening to music and browsing in chrome. On day 2, I flashed CM10.1 and its been mostly solid since.
Place of purchase - Google Play Store
Purchase date - Not entirely sure. It was a Christmas gift. I believe the week before Thanksgiving.
Tape on box broken No. Same with my 2 replacements (more on that in a bit).
Condition of Nexus 10 Software has never been a problem with any of the 3 devices I've had. Only issue, before unlocking and rooting, was Chrome freezing. But that was solved when I installed AOSP browser.
Hardware, evident by my 2 RMAs, was a bit of an issue. My first was 100% light bleed free. But there was a sizeable chunk of dust/lint under the screen. I tried to live with it, but after about 10 days I called Google. RMA process was simple and painless. Replacement device that I received had horrible light bleed. Bottom right corner when in landscape mode actually had a yellowish glow that was visible even under normal usage circumstances. I called Google and had another replacement in 2 days. Second replacement (and current unit) is great. Very little light bleed (only noticeable when using completely black screen, 100% brightness, and viewing in a dark room) and absolutely no other issues.
Place of Purchase: Origin from US Google Play Store (I get from seller that batch purchase at Google Play Store, and resell at Singapore.)
Purchase Date: 28/Jan/2013
Tape on Box Broken: No
Condition of Nexus 10: 100% Mint
Hardware: No light bleed (test with light bleed app at 100% brightness), 99.9% color constant. (Actually I just notice it slightly change due to angle issue)
Software: Random crash on stock 4.2.1 every few hours, now at AOKP 4.2.2, not much random crash, it still happen sometimes but rarely, around once per few days (4 - 5 days) on. I can't said it solid stable, but was far better now, wish future firmware can 100% solved the crash issue, it seems every hang-up only happen when using Google Chrome (on latest beta). I can't said this was 100% Chrome fault, as I also using it in my S III, never had hang-up issue.
Place of Purchase: Play Store
Purchase Date: 1/28/13
Tape On Box Broken: No
Condition of Nexus 10: Perfect
Hardware: Minor light bleed on bottom right hand corner (while holding landscape), noticeable only on black screen with high brightness. Back creaks once in a while when I grab it.
Software: A few reboots on 4.2.1, perfect on 4.2.2
Note: R32D serial #
Place of Purchase: Google Play Store
Purchase Date: Beginning of Feb 2013
Tape on Box Broken: No
Condition of Nexus 10:
Hardware: Minor light-bleed in 2 corners. NFC does not seem to work with my Galaxy NExus, I get a beep but nothiing happens or misses connection directly
Software: Very few random reboots, 4.2.2 fixed it
Still love it
Place of Purchase: Staples
Purchase Date: Late December 2012
Tape on Box Broken: The person who bought it back for me opened it before me, so not sure.
Condition of Nexus 10:
Hardware: Minor light bleed, otherwise good.
Software: Been running Franco Kernel since the start and am now on AOKP ROM as well, but haven't had any reboots
Place of Purchase: Google play spain
Purchase Date: 23/1/2013
Tape on Box Broken: 1 broken, the other was fine
Condition of Nexus 10: Mint
Hardware: Minor light bleed
Software: some screen flicker when browsing.

Cracked screen, warranty replacement unit issued - UK

So, a couple of weeks back the top of my screen got less and less responsive, then went numb.
The display was still working fine, just the touch had gone funky!
Previously I had updated to first official 4.2.2, and the phone used to get super hot, I didn't think anything of it as most of my other devices did the same at one point or another. Turns out my phone had become a casualty of the overheating / hairline crack fault.
I spoke to an online advisor who booked me in to have it assessed and repaired, and right before I sent it off I showed my housemate the waterproof function. Turns out that had failed too... an hour or so later the screen went murky and the indicator had turned slightly pink!
I wrote a little cover note explaining that the device also seemed to have suffered water damage, and sent it off expecting to have to pay to get it back.
Got an email from Sony Xperia Customer Support today confirming that:
"engineers have attempted to repair your handset under the terms and conditions of the Sony Limited Warranty. The fault on your handset, although covered by warranty, was not repairable so we have provided a like for like exchange unit"
So looks like if the worst does happen, they're being nice about it in the UK too
Lucky u...
Some user cant claim as the sceen crack itself...
Even water damage were to be blame to the user when the sticker turn red...

Hoping they say the same about mine. My screen has got serious water damage. Roughly how long did you need to wait before they emailed you?
Thanks.

took nearly 2 weeks. The email was only sent yesterday and my new phone arrived today Seems they've given me my old back panel too, before it got damaged there was some crap that got inbetween my protective case and the back of the phone which etched away at the plastic film on the glass. The new one has marks all in the same places but I have a new phone carcass, screen, motherboard, IMEI etc
And the water sticker turned pink after my screen died, before I sent it off to service I stuck it in a bowl of tap water to show my pal, 2 or so hours later all it did was vibrate when you pressed the power button, then I checked the litmus and BAM! pink.
Nice to know companies offer decent customer service, I hate a Moto RAZR and they replaced a broken screen without question for free which was a great suprise.

hey, an update on what happened with mine..
Basically same happened to mine as yours.. although it was just my screen went dull after water damage.. Then I went to Egypt, and on the flight there the screen started acting weird and wouldnt let me touch anywhere, and the water sensors went from very pale pink to red! So I got home on 15th May and sent it the next day.
Received it back on the 28th May and straight away noticed that the top left (charger) port flap was missing the protective seal, meaning waterproofing feature wouldn't work. I phoned them right away and they said I was to send it back. I explained to them that I'd need to delay sending it away as I was going away for 3 weeks. So now I'm back I was just about to package it all up etc ready for sending off tomorrow.. I took of my case (cheap plastic one that didn't fit very tightly) and the side bezel came straight off, aslong as the bottom bezel!!
So, I've attached a letter along with the phone explaining my rage lmao. The phone I sent was only 3 weeks old and I get it back and there's massive scratches on rear glass etc!
Pic attached of bezel.

God that's horrendous!
I must admit the phone I got back had scratches on the back too, but so did the one I sent in, so I thought the kept my battery cover like all the old phone warranties used to (anyone else remember that?)
Only complaint I've had with the replacement is that the speaker on this one is terrible!
On my original phone the bass from the speaker shook the phone in my hand. This one is just weak and completely lacking in bass
Can't be without it again though, so for now I'm using the GPe ROM as it seems to offer the loudest sound output for this particular handset.
Not sure if my next handset will be another Sony or not at the moment, I do live my phone (battery life, signal reception, and screen quality are insanely pleasing to me) but there are little niggles with touch responsiveness, speaker output (yes I know they trade off volume for watertightness, but my Mrs Z1 and the Z2s are way better) and Bluetooth. The Bluetooth has been shocking on both my c6833s.

Horrendous indeed lol!
When I sent mine in was literally 3 weeks old and hadn't been used that much since I was still using my S4 at the time and had case and protector on since the day I got it so was almost brand new.
Regards to the volume I've noticed the same, where as my partners Ultra is much louder and has more bass.
Im thinking about getting rid of the ultra after only having it a very short 3 months lol. If they put a flash in it, improved sound, and the awful touch screen then I'd defo upgrade to that, but seems like Sony has abandoned the ultra's production !
Don't forget, the ZU2 is due out soon enough... That's the trouble with these fancy phones coming out every 6 months! I wonder if it's some sort of kernel thing re: speaker bass, I've tried a few but no success as yet. Touch response seems better on doom kernel for no apparent reason, afaik it's the exact same touchscreen module in the doomlords kernel as you get with stock but it seems to work better. Also religious cleaning of the screen helps, and I don't run a screen protector.

[Q] faulty screen? lots of green dots and specs

Something I noticed a few weeks ago...
When I have my screen brightness set on the higher end, I see these green dots.
With the power and screen both on, and when the display is trying to show black, I am finding these green dots and specs.
The size of these dots are tiny, probably a pixel or two at most. They are clustered mostly in the inner 50% of the centre of the screen.I have not counted them but we are talking about a few hundred.
At first I thought it was dust or something under the glass, but noticed that with the screen off, it cannot be seen, and when the screen is white background, it cannot be seen either.
It is more noticeable when watching videos. If you crank up the brightness during a scene at night, let's say, it is almost unbearable.
Does anybody else suffer this?
Faulty pixels, you can get it exchanged.
I used the dead pixel app from Google play, where it flicks through many monotone color screens, one of them being black.
And as explained before, I see the green pixels on the pure black screen.
The strange thing is, the research I have done on dead pixels, hot pixels or stuck pixels tells me a different description to what i am seeing.
I see no problems at all during other color screens of the dead pixel test...only the black.
Do I have a uniquely malfunctioning unit, it are others or there?
If you have some spare time on your hands, could you try searching for dead pixel test in Google play and try it out?
No faulty pixels on mine. I think I've seen only one or two other similar reports.
But no matter if the pixels are dead, hot or stuck, it's hardware fault and I'm sure you can get your tablet replaced without a problem.

How about showing us ? - Just take a photo after placing a small piece of paper next to the spots - so your camera gets something for focusing on correctly.

This is the best I can do.
I used mx player, with max brightness.
When the brightness is set 3/4 of the way, it starts to become visible.
P.S. dumb question. How do people manage to paste pic direct in the posts?

Your screen also looks a bit distorted from looking at that playback bar. Yeah, you should just go ahead and get your tablet replaced, no hassle.
And wrap your image link between a
tag. Or just use the image button in the reply editor.
I noticed this problem too on my tablet but not to the same extent. Have you replaced yours?

Not yet, but I will. It has been a while since the original post, but I think it is getting worse. It has spread to a wider area. I contacted service center in Hong Kong and they told me that it should only take 3 hours to replace the lcd. So I will fly there nervy week and get it fixed.
Better to have it done while still under warranty..
I will report one done.

I sent mine in but they did nothing at the problem. They sent it back within two days claiming there is no problem and that they had updated firmware (which they could not have done since I did it before I sent it in lol...)
I called support again and they in return will call the repairshop asking what they actually did to my tablet. Most likely (if everything turns out ok) I will have to send it in again (which is still is annoying) and hopefully they will notice the problem this time.

Which County are you?
Not to defend Sony in any way, but it can be difficult to spot the problem when the screen brightness is anything below 50%.
I notice my problems in the following scenarios.
1) when I boot up the tablet, first the Sony logo. Here you can see it a bit because the background is black. But it gets a lot worse when moving into the next screen during 'Xperia'. Here the brightness is turned up, making it extremely noticeable.
2) when I am trying to watch a movie outside or in a bright place making my screen reflect, forcing me to turn the brightness up above 70% mark...
3) when I am using my tablet in pitch dark... Even in low brightness setting it can be noticed. Especially bad when the movie scene I am watching is for example night time and thus naturally contains a lot of black on the screen.
Anyway, thanks for your info. Before I submit my tablet, I will make sure the recipient sees and understand the problem and get that person to attach a note to describe it for the repair crew.
Judging by the lack of response to this thread, we seem to have encountered a rare problem.

Im from Sweden.
Yeah well I thought I was pretty clear on my instructions regarding how to notice the problem but you might be right. Mine isnt visible much when in use (apart from dark background with 100% brightness) and in dark enviroments.
Right now Im waiting for Sony Xperia support to call me telling me what the next step is. They wanted me to take a picture of them problem however its good to get a good print (picture is easy but printing it is harder ).
I have seen another thread regarding this at Sony Talk forum but that might be you aswell?

UPDATE
I flew into HK last night and went straight to Xperia care centre this morning.
I did not need to mention anything, I showed him the green dots (he called them dead pixels) and took it in immediately.
Judging by his reaction (his English was not very good) it was not the first time he had seen this on the Z2 tablet, and seemed to ask no further.
I showed receipt from purchase, he gave me a form to sign, and I was told to come back in 4 hours.
I came back after 4 hours, and everything was perfect.
I wasn't sure at the time, but it involves replacing the whole front display unit. The LCD screen and outer glass seem to be one piece, because everything was changed.
just a pain that the screen protector was gone with the old screen, so I needed to go and buy new, and that they had to factory reset... one click root and Titanium backup will come in handy...
All in all, my first ever Sony repair experience was professional, efficient and stress free.

Glad to hear that everything turned out ok for you. I have sent mine back and it will soon be at the repair shop (i can track the package). Hopefully they will be able to spot the problem this time otherwise I will be mad.. ;(.
I will update the thread with the result!
Let us know how it goes! I have the same issue, but being here in the United States it will be difficult to send it back to an HK service center....
I have the same problem, im about to call xperia support cause, i need this fix this, i get my tablet to do my homeworks and projects, but mine is around all the lcd i hope they can replace mine

I just happened to have a business trip to Hk coming up so I didn't need to send it in, but when I initially discovered the problem and called Sony Hk, they told me that sending it by registered mail or FedEx was an option.
The Chap on the phone told me to start an email correspondence with support team, who would then provide me with step by step instruction on how to send my tablet in.
For me at the time it was not an option, only because the receipt/proof of purchase was left in my office along with the box in Hk...
Since my tablet was repaired in 3 hours or so, if things go smoothly you might get your tablet back within the week (although it sucks that you have to pay courier 2-way)
Just wanted to say that the 2nd time I sent it for service they replaced the screen and now it looks ok!
I had to write a detailed description of the problem and I also added a printed picture which showed the dots, aswell as a link to an uploaded img. I guess that made them realize.
Lets hope it can stay like this now...
I just wanted to share about mine xperia z2 tablet.I had the same pixel problem, bought the tablet in abay Germany, got it to local service canter in Latvia. They got in touch with Sony and I got complete SWAP. For now it looks ok, I am usingthe new tablet for 2 weeks, lets see what will happen.

Took mine in today for screen and constant reboots got a text saying it would be completed within five days but not what they were going to do so fingers crossed

Glass being prone to crack?

I'm thinking about buying a Z5 Compact, but when reading about all the cases, where the glass on the front or the rear have cracked, on the Z1 Compact and Z3 Compact, I'm not so sure anymore.
What is the situation like with the Z5C vs Z3C/Z1C regarding the glass being prone to crack?
Thanks in advance.
David
I'm in the same situation myself.
However, I doubt we will be able to get feedback regarding this already. The "cracked glass" cases on the Z3C appeared IIRC only some time (months) after the release. Personally I plan to try to resist the urge to buy for 2-3 months and then check if there are any reports.

Just that. I'd wait a few months for a new batch, then you should be fine.

That's exactly what I said about my z3 compact for 9 months, feeling smugly sorry for all the people reporting cracked glass, until it cracked in my hand. On the other hand, that was the best reason to buy a z5 compact. Silly me.

It's been discussed in many other places and the consensus is that it doesn't have gorilla. Apparently, the producer for Sony tempered glass panels is unknown.

Bumping this up a bit..
Didnt want to open a new thread seeing as how this one is still here.
I'm on the edge of purchasing this phone but the spontaneous cracking glass issue and low durability of its predecessor (Z3C) are bugging me..
Was wondering if there are perhaps some more updated impressions regarding this.
Thanks.
I had z1c then z3c, my girlfriend, my sister and brother in law all still have the z3c.
All glass backs.
No cracks on any of these devices.
Other then when literally throwing the phone to ground by accident the front digitiser cracked (back was intact.)
Easy replacement as new chassis with inbuilt digi and screen was like £60 and very simple to replace the housing.
The spontaneous glass crack is hoopla if you take my consolidated multi user experience.
Don't let this phase your decision.
Also bear in mind the glass back plate believe it or not is the simplest thing to replace takes 2mins with a heatgun (again first hand experience.)

I'd be interested to hear more on the replacement procedure. Are there detailed instructions? If it isnt majorly expensive then it's not THAT big of a deal.
I see many cases on the market but no one ever actually tests the case to see how effective it is. Who is willing to drop their phone several times and see if their case works I remember seeing a review of iphone bumpers where they actually did drop several phones and only the really thick ones (like 0.5cm wide) actually protected the phone. Glass typically breaks from an edge hit. Does the glass go all the way to the edge, or is there a border around it? What is the boarder made of and how much energy can it really absorb. Now intuitively, I'd assume that the "compact" phone would be more resilient to cracks due to its size.
My last phone, I had a protector, but my current phone doesnt have one. I've never broken a screen, though I've cracked the casing. Both were gorilla glass. But I have no idea if that is just dumb luck.
I had a Z3, in a high quality case, the back cracked by itself. I was having issues with the speaker being quiet but was told the warranty was void due to the hairline crack in the back. Then a while later I dropped it but I caught it on my foot before it hit the ground so it was a very minor fall, but it was enough to crack the screen, a very thin hairline crack but still a crack, this stopped the screen from working so I was stuck without a phone. I got it replaced, and the back while I was at it, cost me $300 (AUD) to fix. The day I got the phone back, I was sat down at a table, wrote a message to my wife put the phone back in my jacket pocket, she text back so I pulled the phone out to check the message and there was a big crack across the screen. I did not drop it at all! Again the screen would not work. I didnt want to pay another $300 to fix the phone as they said the crack was due to stress (bull), so I bought a s6 galaxy, even though my Z3 was only 4 months old! Because the screen would not work with the crack in it, I could not get any of my data off the phone, when I plugged it into the PC I needed to unlock the phone but couldn't because the screen did not work, was very frustrated! Never buying a Sony again until they can confirm they have fixed this issue. The phone was too thin and flexed easily, my galaxy is thin but feels much more solid.
I have had a Z5C for a couple of months now. I spend a lot of time outdoors and am generally a bit rough with tech. I have dropped my phone from about a metre up a couple of times by accident already - knocked off tables etc. and have not suffered any ill effects yet.
Have dropped my phone SEVERAL times but still, screen takes it like a champ. Really durable phone if you ask me
I'm gentle with my phones, and even had a gel case on mine and yet the back seems to have cracked somehow without even a drop. The worst part is that I imported mine (don't sell them in Canada), so I can't get it fixed. I bought a skin from dbrand instead, and you can't even tell it's shattered any more.
Another user of z3c here , i can also confirm the glass problem is definitely a problem with z3c , dropped from 2 feet and back glass shattered , then drop from car seat on to the drive and cracked front from corner to corner disabling digitizer so now im using my phone with an otg mouse.
Im in the market for a new phone, but there is nothing except the z5c with a top spec that isn't stupidly big 5" + , i just tried a 5" asus phone very nice but just far too big for a phone, its not meant to be a bloody computer , its a phone, cant wait until they start becoming a bit more realistic again.
So i have looked at z5 , but i see exactly the same thread on the sony forums that was going for months if not years regarding z3 screen , and sony are still not taking responsibility and it looks like the design is still the same for z5c , such a shame as the phone is perfect in every way other than this defect (and some of the crap software add ons, but that's manageable)
Any other recommendations ?, it seems like i will be forced to buy an older gen phone , or a low end thing like moto E , why the hell did they make motog screen bigger after the first edition , ruined it as that was almost perfect too. I am considering a wileyfox , im just hoping some of these 5" ers have a minimal bezzal around the screen , the asus had a pretty big one it looked a like a plate , and that was their smallest one - how things have changed since the 8210 - at least i will save money if i buy a lower spec phone, but i'm a tech enthusiast and i want the best always have, they are turning away my money , there is nothing usable worth buying .
Back to the original topic , z5c , i just cant risk the money on it if it has such a fundamental floor , its an expensive phone compared to most other 4.5,6,7,8" phones that are usually around 100-150 , money isnt really the object though for the right phone i would pay. I have never had a phone screen crack before , and my z3 sees less action than any of my others as i work from home now and spend a lot more time in the house with my baby daughter, the htc phones are good , i lost count of the amount of times i dropped my desire HD hard , and when it was replaced by moto g it go even more brutal treatment as a second phone i kicked it down the road pissed and threw it against the wall several times, dropped down stairs and out of my pocket while riding a bike quickly , marks to the metal body but the screen was indestructible , i managed to break the moto g screen but i had fixed as i convinced them it was ridiculous that it broke failing off a sofa onto carpet but my replacement was fine , i had a painful time trying to do the same with sony though and with the endless complaints online, its obviously an inherent fault , im just appalled the z5c hasn't changed this.
This maybe a slightly unfocused rant , but i'm sure there are others that share my view , big spenders in the mobile sector have just been abandoned , someone needs to fill the gap in the market.
My partner also has the same issue , but is currently using a one mini 2 , which is very nice , but now slightly dated and HTC only went and cancelled all the updates , it didn't even get lollipop , why , it was the best phone they did by miles, and on top of that , they cancelled the mini3 , ultimate face palm
Where do i go chinese market ?
the blackberry blackphone is 4.7" , but i fear this is **** as it uses blackbery os, and i believe it has the other showstopping problem that the asus has , in that the processors architecture makes it incompatible with many apps, such as the only that is critical to me , the banking app with barclays.
Such a struggle, am i off to the chinese market? , i have no ****ing clue.

I'm with you on the needing a small phone thing. I'd check out Samsung's lineup. a3, a5, s4 mini, alpha, s5 mini. There's something for almost everyone. I was curious if the z1c and z3c but they always had there drawbacks, z5c I took the shot and ain't liking it.
If you dot care about expandable memory or user replaceable batteries there's a few other options as well.
Sadly , i ****ing hate the ugly samsung software, but i did seriously look at the a series, whilst thinking wtf , how am i being forced to consider a low end phone when tech is my number one interest and about the only thing i warrant spending lots of money on, i will end up saving money at this rate - i am looking at the oneplus x now, as it seems to have a bit smaller outer dimensions , and still a decent spec but of course it's 5" too
trouble is i ran into this page recently https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon/processors/820 , and now i need to have that processor in my next phone.
I think i will grab a wiley swift for now, only £130 to get me by , and even £20 cash back from manufacturer now , its not high spec i know , but im desperate for something now, and no way am i giving these 'leading' manufacturers money to encourage the ridiculous types of phones they are churning out by the bucket now, they are ****ing house phones not something to carry around with you, i could imagine them wall mounted , but Gzus i see some people carrying these things and it looks like they are going into battle with the 'visionaries' .....

Id try a z5c if it was about 1/2 the price and i didnt have a z3c already, for now i might just fix myz3c and put it inside a cage , it will still be smaller than these 5" devices - what did you find wrong with it though ?
I've owned a Z1C and now a Z5C and never had cracking issues on either. Don't drop your phone, it won't crack. If you're prone to dropping your phone, always get a case, because it's stupid to risk that much money on being clumsy.
