[Q] Firefox OS applications - Firefox OS Q&A

I'm looking to migrate to Firefox OS but there is a whole bunch of apps I need which are not available yet as of my knowledge. I wondered if you could point me in the right direction, here is what I'm looking for:
1) SIP client with G.729 or OPUS support - there must be something somewhere?
2) Garmin GPS application - nothing found and probably will never see any app reading Garmin format cards but I'm already accepting the fact I need to buy some real hardware.
3) SSH and telnet client - nothing found.
4) Ping, nslookup, whois, traceroute - nothing found.
5) What's App - I heard there is a good replacement called Connect2A. Also Telefonica released something which is in Spanish only.
6) Owncloud client
7) XMPP client with SSL/TLS support - LoquiIM seems like a prominent candidate but I don't see anything about encryption support (except OTR in which I'm not interested as there is no offline messaging support).
8) Dictionary, file manager, PDF viewer - I see there are options.
9) IMAP/SMTP client with SSL/TLS - no Thunderbird?!? WTF?!?
10) Music player with FLAC support - nothing found.
11) Microsoft Office viewer - at least XLS and DOC support, PPT would be nice also.
12) AntiVirus - AVG Link Scanner is the closest I found.
13) AntiSpyware - as this is a web-oriented platform I can imagine it's not going to take much time to find a way how to poison the embedded browser.
Maybe for 3) and 4) this is the best hope?

At the moment this Firefox Marketplace looks to me more like a playground for script kiddies trying to get some revenue by poisoning you with apps that throw a bunch of adds on your screen or by stealing private data.

Utility Software For the Shift

Hi, I have been using my shift for a week or so now and I have found the 1GB memory to be an issue with lagging screen switches in W7.
One solution I found was to install this free utility called "Minimem" (found here: http://minimem.kerkia.net/Download.aspx)
So far it is working great and my windows (in W7 RC) switch faster, and I can have a few program running.
It's easy to figure out, just install it, started up all your programs, open 'Minimem', then choose all the programs you want managed, choose how often you want to run Minimem in seconds, and what Memory threshold should be exceeded before it takes any action on those programs.
Mid-day update:
I forgot about this, but to stop unnecessary things from opening in Win7, there is another great free utility here: (http://www.anvir.com/task-manager-windows-startup.htm) called "AnVir Task Manager Free"
It lets you choose what to start on start up, plus lets you do a delayed startup of select programs (like Messenger, or other non essential programs on startup)
And I've confirmed that the beta version of Stardock Fences (http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/) works well (very handy for this screen)
I hope this helps those wanting to speed up W7 even more!
If anyone else knows of other great free utilities I would love to know!
thanks for all your great posts, I like the Fences very much.
As for the RAM optimization, I'm using MemTurbo (not a Freeware) and it's working great. I'll try later your suggested app.
Maximize Your Shift
I'm a business user of the Shift, that's why I bought it. I needed mobility, practicality, and ultimate portability. Here are some things I have been researching on how to make the most of your shift.
While the developers are working hard at expanding the features of WiFi/SD/BT, here are some cool tricks for your Shift in the meantime:
First, signup for a Windows Live account, if you don't already have one.
SYNC
Get "Windows Live Sync" - It's AWESOME!
Why Email when you can Sync Live?
I hate email, its useless, and outdated. I like live communications.
(I'm always on wifi, and my 3G is there when needed, so this tool is great for file syncing. I have my PC at work that hibernates, and mini PC that acts as a file server that is on 24/7. Then I have my shift. I simply set up the folders I want to sync and this beauty does it all perfectly in the background. ...If you are on a pay as you go data plan, I would suggest setting specific folders in SYNC to "Manual vs. Automatic" to save money or creating a side folder to move things between) ...what really makes this great, is that you can sync files between anyone else with a Windows Live account. (I'm a mobile professional, and this is great for my team to send me docs. They simply save it to a folder, and seconds later I get it!
ONLINE STORAGE
Windows SKY Drive (25 GB of online storage!)
Anywhere access-Get to your online files from home, work, or on the road.
Easy to use-Password-protected-Keep your files to yourself, or share them with anyone you want.
Drag files into your online folders, just like on your PC.
(Who knows, maybe one day it might even be possible for developers to post and manage their ROM updates this way!)
Mid-Day Update:
Okay, this is just Really, really cool!
Gladinet.com lets you link your PC up to all those great online storages you have kicking around! Windows SkyDrive - Google Picasa - Google Docs - Amazon Storage, and a few others, plus some custom settings for obscure locations.
This means you can use your online drive as a drive letter on your Shift!

Awesome post! I went off and signed up for skydrive and adrive all because of gladinet. Truly a great find!
Thanks for sharing, you made us one step closer in becoming mobile professionals!
Thanks!
I am always scouring for, new better ways to do things and the Shift opens many doors a laptop just can't.
I\ll probably be adding more to this thread soon, i just found a few new devices and freewares to make mobile life that much more practical

Well don´t know if its a "new" utility for you guys, but for me it is and works quite fine...
It´s Virtual Clone Drive, a freeware that can be downloaded from http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html
It helped me install WIn 7 on my Shift and for now, has eliminated my need for an external CD/DVD drive

Edit: now it works, it was firewalled.
Is it normal that when i turn "on" modem, MyMobile disconnects?

Usin your TP as your computer...suggestions & tips?

So very soon, I will be moving, and when this happens, I will no longer have access to a computer. My TP will be my lifeblood.
1.)Are there any programs I should install on my TP that can only be installed via PC? (Windows Mobile Device Center)
2.)In case I find a program after I move that is .EXE only, is there any way at all to run those on Windows Mobile?
3.)Most ROMs can be downloaded on the phone then flashed via SD card correct? In case I take the plunge and get rid of my stock
4.)-Please- suggest some programs for me to use...I just bought a TV out cable in anticipation of the move. I plan on using skyfire to watch streaming video (Bleach/Narutoget.com ftw!!), but it can be choppy at times, so anything better than skyfire for that purpose?
You guys have NO idea how grateful I would be for your help!
Hey bud,
I have a few suggestions, the first of which is to buy a cheap computer when you move . It will save you a ton of hassle. The office applications included on the Touch Pro can be somewhat of a problem with editing, etc. The TV-out can be prone to lag. That aside here are a couple of other suggestions:
- For videos forget about skyfire. Use HTC's (or coreplayer) Youtube application to watch videos, including anime, the quality will be much better than skyfire. Or, alternatively, several people encode anime and what not to be viewed on the PSP...the format works very well on the Touch Pro. www.yes-psp.com is one such site. Try googling "anime4psp". You can also download an IRC client (eg. pocketirc) and download videos through IRC. Coreplayer plays most popular xvid encodings quite well.
- As for the activesync/rapi installed programs, I'm sure there is a way with a PC...not sure if there is an app for windows mobile
- Personally, I've tried a ton of ROMS. Each one seems to have its positives and negatives. EnergyROM has ALL the bells and whistles, however, be prepared for only a 4-5 hour battery life. DCD is great if you want a base ROM. Juicy has a ton of cutting edge stuff. Mighty ROM for speed and stability. I personally use NSFan's rom with touchflo3d turned off. It seems to have the most balance with regards to speed, stability, battery life, and includes a good smattering of "bells and whistles". Plus he some decent graphics drivers included in the ROM.
- ROMS can be installed via the storage card as long as the .nbh file is named appropriately and your storage card is formatted in the correct filesystem.
Here is my list of apps (not including what's included by default in NSFan's ROM):
- G-Alarm
- Coreplayer
- Pocket Artist
- Mobile FTP Client
- Mochasoft FTP server
- PocketIRC
- Beejive IM
- Skype
- Microsoft's Facebook App.
- System Seven (a free service that delivers push e-mail using imap-idle)
- WMtorrent (for downloading torrents)
- NSFan's Opera Browser build (available here on Xda)
- cleanRAM
- Total Commander (file explorer)
- Powerguard (battery monitor/logging)
- Sashimi (for easily restoring files when you flash a new rom)
- hTorch (flashlight program available on XDA)
- cHome Editor (on XDA)
- reStart (on XDA)
- Touch In Call screen tweak (think it's on XDA)
- Chartcross GPS Test (I use it as a GPS primer)
- QuickGPS (can be obtained from DCD's site)
- MyMotion (a program that logs your run/bikes etc with spoken feedback, and it allows you to save the logs as kmz files...which can be loaded into Google Earth. Note that this program will not function with Touchflo 3d turned on).
- Tom Tom Navigator
- Jetcet Print 5
- W0lf's Translator
- Clearvue Presentation
Hope this helps

[Q] Q : How to change unlock button to "Home" for Nokia 710?

Morning all,
I need some help to resolve 2 questions.
1. How can i change the configuration to unlock the phone, not only by using "Power" button, but also "Home" button?
2. How can i transfer .epub files into my Windows Phone?
All i can find in XDA involved Android, or Windows Mobile, but not Windows Phone.
So any help is highly appreciated.
Don't think you can change the button function without an unlocked device and some hacking wizardry but I found this about .epub docs
Flibusta provides downloadable texts in .fb2, .epub or .mobi formats. The Windows Phone 7 Marketplace is tiny compared to Google market, but I found one free ebook reader called Freda that is able to read .epub files. Buried down in the UI ofr Freda, there is a Website page that allows to paste an URL in the text box. The same page also embeds Internet Explorer. I figured that the text box shall be used to download .epub document to the device. However, pasting a url to an .epub file distributed by Flibusta did not work. I tried another ebook reader, called iSilo. It was a very usable and feature-rich program on my old Palm TT, but it could not open my .epub file either.
An inspection of the HTTP session between the browser and Flibusta allowed to pinpoint a problem. Flibusta issues two HTTP 302 redirects: one to insure that the .fb2 document is converted to .epub and the other to compresses the .epub document, if needed. The Internet Explorer used in Windows Phone 7 did not want to follow the redirects, but typing manually the url given in the last redirect in the Freda search box worked.
http://mikhailian.mova.org/everything-you-can-not-do-windows-phone-7
Thanks for the info about Flibusta and the redirects - I will check it out, and make sure it works with the next release of Freda. Actually, I am about to start beta-testing that release in the next days, so if you want to join the beta-testing team, just let me know ([email protected]).
Incidentally, the flibusta catalog is also available as an OPDS book source on Freda (just find the 'unhide source' menu, and unhide the source called 'flibusta'). That should give a better book browsing experience. That 'website source' interface is really just a workaround for the fact that Microsoft won't let me register a program (e.g. Freda) as the app to open .epub files - and I'd be the first to admit that it is a pretty ugly workaround.

Display a webpage using 'webview' in Windows Phone App (Compatibility View)

I tried to create a new project using 'webview' in VS 2013 for windows phone app. The login page comes up and once I click on submit, this is what I see:
"This website is best viewed in Internet Explorer 7.
Kindly use Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or above.
If you are facing any issues while viewing the website, Please view the website in compatibility mode. "
Can we render this page somehow in this app by changing the compatibility settings?
Code:
Protected Overrides Sub OnNavigatedTo(e As NavigationEventArgs)
Dim HomeUri As New Uri("https://url")
WebViewControl.Navigate(HomeUri)
AddHandler HardwareButtons.BackPressed, AddressOf MainPage_BackPressed
End Sub
You most likely neither need nor want to put the webview in compatibility mode; IE7 is ancient. The problem is that the site - like many others written by incompetent web devs - uses overly-strict user-agent sniffing instead of just testing for feature compatibility. All you should need to do is send a custom user-agent header. I'm not the person to talk to about that - I don't use the WebView control, as a general rule - but it's possible. Several of the third-party browser apps on the store do it.
I tried this but it did not work:
Code:
Dim ua As New String("Mozilla/4.0(compatible; MSIE 7.0b; Windows NT 6.0)")
Dim targetUri As New Uri("https://blablabla")
Dim hrm As New HttpRequestMessage(HttpMethod.Get, targetUri)
hrm.Headers.Add("User-Agent", ua)
WebViewControl.NavigateWithHttpRequestMessage(hrm)

Official native Google webcam app ceases working in Chrome OS with Android

Official native integrated Google webcam app ceases working in Chrome OS with Android -
links in https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78498649&postcount=130
A while ago I asked if someone had a Chromebook that can host Android officially, like Acer CB R11 whether the webcam could be used from within Android - here:
Until now the hacks we use to get Chrome OS on a non Chromebook, or adapt a recovery image like I & chromefy later did so it can allow use of Android & crostini on Chromebooks that don't officially support that... have some issues which sometimes can be ironed out, & sometimes can't.
One of them is integrated camera.
After a few tests, I found out that activating Android disable the integrated official webcam app, the question I throw in the air is if this is only for our hacked versions, or is this an actual bug we can submit to the Google devs team, file a bug report...
So it will be appreciated if someone who has a Chromebook that can officially load Android to check if the camera app works.
There is another Google camera app that can be used instead, this is its address in the Google Web Store:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...ifgngh/related?utm_source=chrome-app-launcher
It is thus not a big issue, unless one wants to use the official shipped webcam camera app, which by the way we cannot uninstall...
I am also still interested in the answer to whether the integrated webcam can be used from within Android apps such as Skype, on my hacked versions, it cannot, but can it be used on officially supported Chromebooks?
I will put this in a separate thread to maximise exposure & on my twitter feeds...
https://twitter.com/inabster/status/1077314501215690752
Observation - please note that the camera driver works, it is just that Android has no access to it, & when Android is activated it interferes with the Google integrated official camera app - though the other official app (which can be uninstalled) they are posting (link above) in the webstore works...
News - this is a problem for many if not all Chromebooks - a native camera app issue - but I think it is Android activation that creates the problem - I also read that R71 includes a new camera app, it might solve this nagging issue - but not having access to the camera from Android needs to be fixed as there are Android apps that benefit from a webcam, such as skype...
Analysis progress -
when Android is being activated with core apps updated, at some stage when I start the camera app it says "media migration in progress" briefly, then it stops working...
I believe @googledevs are trying to port native camera to Android so it runs from the Android framework, & it is failing...
as soon as Android is disactivated, native camera works again. I will try & single out if possible which Android apps/updates interferes...
& this xda article confirms my analysis -
https://www.xda-developers.com/google-camera-chromebook-pixelbook/
Google Camera app shows up on some Chromebooks like the Pixelbook
and is called Camera Media Migration, appearing in the Pixelbook which ROM is code named eve,
so using eve recovery ROM creates this problem - further they say:
when the native camera icon is clicked, whether the stock Chrome OS camera app or the Google Camera app is opened will be “determined dynamically.”
So the stock Chrome OS camera app is the one in the Google webstore, whereas the original icon of the Chromebook "eve" gets taken over by Android & becomes Camera Media Migration when Android is activated.
Two "unsatisfactory" solutions for those using the hack -
1. Uninstall Android.
2. Keep Android, & install the webstore original app, pinning it to the launch bar, & not use the old camera icon.
I think one can live with 2.
...
Final development (I hope) & maybe probably solution:
on Acer Chromebook C720P
as if by "magic" the native camera app got working after a reboot, this is how/why...
precisely this -
1. Redo chromefy from scratch by creating a new FydeOS stick/ssd.
2. Do not test the stick / ssd.
3. Boot from a pure FydeOS stick (the source)
4. Apply chromefy on the target, use cyan/caroline, nothing else i.e.
sudo bash chromefy.sh /dev/sdx3 cyan_R70.bin caroline_R70.bin (see above posts).
over the new (target) FydeOS stick/ssd.
5. Boot from the chromefied new FydeOS stick/ssd.
6. Let it do its things (like install all Android apps, etc).
7. Reboot.
Hopefully this fixes the camera issue.
Of note, the webstore camera ceases working, as not needed anymore - still works after reboot
- eve might be not so lucky (for non Acer C720P ... machines)

Solved: Camera Media Migration works within Android in Acer CB C720P
Solved: Camera Media Migration works within Android in Acer Chromebook C720P -
the above methodology works in making Google Camera (Camera Media Migration) accessible from within Android - just follow exactly the post above to install Chrome OS cyan R70...
Sad news -
Camera Media Migration does not work on Acer Iconia W700 & Apple Macbook Air mid 2011 - so no accessing camera from within Android either.
In non Chromebook devices, only the camera from webstore works, but cannot be accessed from Android.
However, it can be accessed from Ubuntu distros through crouton, so does Skype within these.
The petulant answer would be if you wish to get the functionality, & have the money to splatter, buy a Chromebook
camera & migration not working in crostini penguin
As I observed in previous threads, crouton is an excellent solution to compensate for the limitations of chromebooks, even those who do not support Android or crostini...
New chromebooks are trying to fill the gap, & even there are attempt at an Apple bootcamp solution in the pipeline...
One reason I like chromebooks is nostalgia - nostalgia of the times when Windows was starting, DOS, Linux, OS X & so on, about hacking & struggling to make devices work within new operating systems, etc.
Windows 2000, 7, 8 & 10 have everything I need, as mature operating systems with plenty of supporting software, so does Ubuntu, & Arch Linux...
Still I am indulging my child like side enjoying tinkering with a Chromebook, & Chromium OS, Chrome OS, because there is no much tinkering left in Apple OS X & MS Windows for example...
Now my latest comment is about camera, usb camera in Acer Chromebook C720P -
Skype can be installed through crouton, & works well. Skype can also be installed through crostini penguin, but has no access to camera nor audio.
As Google is trying to make Linux environment to users through crostini, they must address these issues, or they might not which will then beg the question why develop crostini, if it's half crippled?
This is a twitter post I addressed them by for these issues -
OK - successful install of skypeforlinux in crostini penguin, loads well, communicates well with @Skype server, but does not access audio or video in Chrome OS cyan R70 - unlike using crouton in @ubuntu even with a usb compatible webcam, sad ?
guess absent usb host mode ?
