[HELP] I spilled beer on my phone and tablet - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This may be wrong forum, sorry for that if so..
An hour ago i spilled beer on my phone (Xperia U) and tablet (WonderMedia/Vivax TPC 7152).
I didn't noticed it because beer was in my purse with phone and tablet, i tried to boot my phone,it is dead.
Tablet got corrupted (software wise), text got verticaly inverted and started flickering and it died. (I Could not take battery out, case is made like that).
I covered tablet and phone with rice, and i am hoping for best.
Can someone tell me what to do if it won't work after 3 days in rice?
I am trying to bypass service guy because i am living in small town and almost everyone knows who i am and who is my dad...
If dad find this out it will be bad...
Also grandma bough tablet recently so she is gonna be mad for sure...
Any help is appreciated

Dry it in the sun
Open the phone take out battery SIM and sd card and dry out in the sun
For tab put it in the sun
Once I also poor my phone in to a basket full of water

There are A LOT of tutorials about what to do if your phone gets wet, a google search will find you dozens, if not hundreds.
However, one thing that not all of them cover, but I would recommend for YOUR phone is to soak it again in alcohol (NOT BEER haha). Since yours was beer spilled, not just water, there is an added chance of it leaving behind a residue EVEN AFTER it is dry (think beer spilled on kitchen floor = sticky spot long after it's dry). That residue could block or short out connections inside the phone. For that reason you may want to actually soak the phone in isopropyl alcohol. I know it seems counter-intuitive to solve a wet phone by soaking it, but it isn't. The isopropyl doesn't conduct electricity and will effectively 'rinse' away the beer inside of your phone. Again, you can google the fine details but be sure to use 99% isopropyl (or as close as you can get). After it is rinsed out... THEN put it in rice to speed up the drying (but the alcohol will evaporate quicker than water would anyways)
The only other, fairly easy, step that most people take is to open up the phone and try to scrape away corrosion. Basically getting the metal inside the phone wet can cause rust spots and those spots won't conduct electricity well and could block power or signals from one part of a phone to another. By scraping away the little rust spots you can sometimes improve the connections. You could also google more details on that process, but if you can't even open your device enough to take out the battery, then this may not be an option FOR YOU.
If all else fails and the phone doesn't recover then you have to either come clean about the beer or "accidentally" drop your phone in a more acceptable liquid. NOT that I recommend lying to your dad... but if you've already decided not to tell him about the beer, then that ship may have already sailed. If that is the case then damage from the sink or washing machine might be your simplest explanation.
GOOD LUCK!

Remember to remove battery SIM and sd card before anything u do

My phone and tablet is in rice for about 13h, i will now put it on sun and wait for few hours, i will ask my mother to buy me that isopropyl alcohol, and i will try to disassemble both phone and tablet (found out that you actually can disassemble tablet) and remove corrosion.
Thank you very much, i am hoping for best!

[Q] Help requested for repairing HD2

Hallo
I have a HD2 (T8585) which accidentally was dropped into water. (There goes
the warranty into the water too). The phone was
opened and let to dry on a warm place for some time. Now, when I switch on
the HD2, I am unable to swich ON the mobile. The battery measures 3.8v.
I tried to switch ON the HD2 with the charger, but unsuccessful.
Can u share your experience / tips on repairing the same please.
The charging LED doesnt light on or the pressing the switch on button also
doesnt help.
This is a 3 month old HD2 in very good physical state ( but for water damage).
I really dont want to throw away such a nice phone or dismantle to parts
for spareparts price.
Please provide tips on what to check / measure after opening the
back cover > battery > 4 screws > ?
I have (2 cents worth) basic knowledge of electronics and would like to get it alive.
Thanks

Depending on the length of time it was submerged and how it was "opened" to let dry, it is often possible to save a phone from contact with liquid.
Obviously absolute MINIMAL time in water or any other liquid will improve your chances, as well as immediate removal of the battery.
The phone should be disassembled as much as possible and excess liquid should be removed. The parts should then be placed in a warm (not hot!) location with low humidity such as in a bag with rice or silica packets (if handy) to absorb moisture. It should then be allowed to dry for at least 48 hours (the longer the better).
Since you did not state how long your phone was exposed to the liquid and exactly what steps you took to dry it, I cannot say whether or not it is possible to salvage it. The fact that it is not powering on or charging is definately not a good sign.

Unfortunately it may require a bit more than 2 cents of electronic knowledge to repair severe water damage. Assuming it can be repaired at all...
If you want to try you need to remove the circuit boards and carefully clean any corrosion around all the contacts.
Use a q-tip and very soft toothbrush to remove corrosion. Distilled water or a pure alchohol or solvent that contains no oil or other ingredients and will evaporate compeltly can be used. This is a tedious process and every electrical component must be cleaned.
Once the componets are clean, carfully wash (if nessecary) and dry the circuit board and all electrical contacts. Place it in a warm dry bag (with rice or silica packets) and let it dry for at least 12hrs (longer is better). Do not use heat or direct sunlight to speed up the drying process. Once the compenents are dry again, reassemble your device. Make sure the battery is cleaned and dry as well. (If possible use an alternate battery.)
Power on the device. If you still get no power/charging/boot then swear loudly and punch a hole in the wall.
Good luck.
Fully Agree with your post faelok, sadly you did not complete your last sentence:

You know what I was thinking might be funny though? Take it out to a public place somewhere and pretend to have an angry conversation on it, then yell "OH YEA!?!? WELL $^%# YOU TOO!!" then smash it on the ground.
Then enjoy the reactions on the faces of the unsuspecting public.

is this phone waterproof!?

today i experienced any phone holders worst nightmare... dropping your pride and joy in water!
but after this i quickly turned the phone off, used an hairdryer xD and put everything back in, and as if by magic, it was alive!!
although the screen did shatter :/
so is this amazing piece of technology really water proof?
No it is NOT.
You`re lucky this time, but if you ever send it in for any repair they may deny warranty because of the moisture indicators.
Most phones or any electronic devices for that matter survive a (short) drop in water due to multiple reasons:
- the case is relatively airtight. Water cannot immediately "flood" the device
- Water is a very bad electrical conductor (except if you drop it into saltwater or the unflushed toiled)
As far as conductivity is conserned, it's possible to run naked computers (no case, ...) in purified water.
However there an other issue kicks in: corrosin. Water is a very agressive substance (mainly due to oxygen) and will "eat" away electrical conductors very quickly and cause irreparable damages.
Drying off your phone may not be enough, it's recommended to:
- immediately pull the battery (that's one of the reasons I wouldn't want to get one with built-in battery)
- put it into a bag with dry rice and/or grounded herbs (whatever you have at hand) so that it's completely covered
- put it in a somewhat warm (or sunny) location so that the water vaporates and is taken up by the rice (You may want to stir once a day)
- keep fingers crossed and boot
Note that water-caused damage must not always be visible from the beginning. It's sufficient for a small component to die (e.g. a capacitor) so that in the following days/weeks/months the other parts overload too and the components start failing one after another.
Usually you're fine though.

good move on the hairdryer , just dont microwave it
Not waterproof
Defo lucky. Mine was simply rained upon whilst I was abroad and it is now not working - I didn't think of the hairdryer at the time. The company I sent it into for repairs said that the motherboard has corroded and that it needs replacing. Naturally, it will not turn on and I still want the data off of it though - any suggestions?
Lucky this time. Be careful... huh.
but some people have reported the same other forums. "Blumps, drying, works!"
No it isn't but in many cases a phone can be resurrected. Most important is to not turn it on until it is fully dry.
My friend dropped his S2 in about 50cm of salt / seawater while we were fishing. Took us a minute to find it. I used a knife to remove the screws and opened it up. Before that I rinsed it in fresh water. Let it dry for about an hour, put it back together and it worked just like before. That was 6 months ago and its still running fine.

Evo went for a dip in the pool.

My daughter god bless her, was playing with my wifes phone taking pictures when as the title suggest she dropped it it in the pool.
I quickly pulled battery and let the heat of the sun dry it out, last night I finally managed to get some rice and let it sit for maybe 9 or so hours.
Powered up just now, camera works but no actual picture is taken, just a blank screen. I had to fix permissions I had a ton of fc errors.
So you think I should open it up and dry it out and maybe spray it down with compressed air?
It still has basic functions working, like phone data ect, just camera seems borked.
Comments withdrawn
I probably would not use or be very cautious with the compressed air, cause it can easily rip parts off the board.
Just look if there's already a sign of corrosion and try to wipe it off.

Give it as much time as you can to dry off. Even the memory card. Might want to try to do a full reset and see if that helps.
If you have insurance you might want to look at a few threads here about people being offered the Epic and Original Evo. Don't take anything less than a SGII

I have a hair dryer so Ill use that.
We are on vacation so Ill have to buy a screwdriver unless the Hotel has a little something available.
Thanks for the detailed links, much appreciated. I too was very surprised it worked, I think my clam shell case helped to keep the water out.
My daughter is happy getting mommy a new phone would have blew it for her getting a phone for back to school.

Insurance, interesting. I do recall this 5 dollar charge for some type of accident insurance. Phone is only 8-9 months old.

The problem actually isn't the water usually. It the rust and corroded contacts points left as that water dries. If its been as long as you say be grateful the phone still works at all. Especially the speakers(the water usually kills them on xontact).
With as many hours as you say have passed the damage is done. You need to put it in dry rice or salt or the little sodium pellets IMMEDIATELY

I don't if the EVO 3D does but other phones have strips inside that change color once it gets wet. So they can tell if the phone has been immersed in water like dropping it in a toilet or pool.
Its usually the first thing they check for under a warranty claim. They check to see if the phone was immersed in water.
Such a thing is usually not covered under warranty.

If you pay for additional insurance you are covered after a fifty to one hundred dollar deductible. Everything is covered..theft,fire,water damage, etc..
If you are under manufacturer warranty only, then you are screwed they will always send the phone back and cite water damage. They only cover manufacturers defects.
Just popping in here, we would use denatured achohol to clean phones, it will evaporate the water from corroding the contacts.
Watch out if you have cuts on your fingers if you try it.

To add to that, a hair dryer or compressed air might actually push water deeper in or, in the hair dryer's case, melt something.

It's funny how a missing comma can confuse people . I meant that the hair dryer could melt something. The dryer or compressed air could push water deeper into the phone. I fixed my post to clarify.

I have not tried this because mercifully I have not dropped phone in the water yet. But years ago when I had instrumentation on high pressure pipelines, sometimes a seal would break and we would wind up with salt water all in the equipment. We would wash it down with distilled water, then to completely evaporate all the water, we would put it in a vacuum chamber. As the air pressure drops, the boiling point of water drops and the water literally boils away. I wonder if one of those space bags you connect to a vacuum cleaner would draw enough to make that work?
Don't know but something to file away for the next water accident.
Scar is right, we used Denatured Alcohol, every time I saw a phone come in with liquid, one of two things happened:
the customer was an ******* so i sent them on their marry little way to Asurion
OR
I took the phone apart, ignored the LDI's, gave that sucker a good alcohol bath, replaced the part malfunctioning like in your case the camera and gave it back to them.
I personally (just me) wouldn't use a blow dryer on anything like this, those parts are sensitive to heat unless you know what you're doing. I'm sure you can find a nice tech and they'll try and fix it for ya or they'll replace it unless you dont have TEP then you're screwed both ways, and for that I'm sorry
Funny I was thinking alcohol as well.
I have the phone apart now, it was super easy and the hotel im in had a nice screw driver set.
I have several sd cards and few new sims i can activate a new one when i get home.
Back in the day when I benched pc's I sprayed the motherboard and gpu with conformal spray ( we have it at work) Wondering if that would stop any corrosion from occurring.
Im not against trying for warranty but its my fault not failure so I would be upfront and see what if anything they would do. I have 3 lines and 7 year customer, maybe that will mean something.
Thanks for all the advice and suggestions, very much appreciated
Sorry to be off topic but it is sorta still on topic.. ill explain...
I got a macbook pro from someone the other day. They spilled milk on it and the keyboard doesnt work. I was gonna get some denatured alcohol and clean it but ive never done it. How would this be done? Do you actually just sit the board in it for a couple hours or do you just wipe it down with something, if so, what? Im also wondering this just in case i need to do this to any other electronic, like my 3d. Thanks for any help guys.

Rezound acting funny after falling in pool.

Obviously know that title is silly in nature, just wanted to get you all in here, haha.
Anyhow, had my housewarming this past Saturday and fell in the pool with Rezound in my pocket. As is customary during these family gatherings, I was sauced up with enough vodka that I also swam around for a few minutes all the while knowing the I had the phone in my pocket. At this point it was simply a, "Phone's most definitely dead, so screw it!" moment.
Still curious if the phone was truly a goner, I sobered up a bit and ended up taking off the cover, battery, sim, & SD card and threw the phone in rice, let it sit over the weekend, then laid it out on my dashboard in sweltering 106F heat for good measure. Expecting absolutely nothing, I just tried it this morning and it is quite literally perfect with no effect from the dip - LCD, touch, ports, data on int/ext - it's as if it never got wet...except can't connect to anything but 1x.
I know it's ridiculous to expect this phone to even turn on after getting submerged in chlorinated water for 5 minutes, let alone function almost perfect besides the 3G/4G issue, but that's pretty weird right? All 3 of my other lines are connected to 4G fine in my home, eliminating the chance that there's some outage in my area. I've done all the customary fix attempts; cleaning/reseating SIM, cleaning antennae contact points, trying a different battery cover, battery pulls, clean flash ROM (both SlimROM & the OTA), and it simply won't pull anything but 1x.
I have next to no knowledge about circuitry and logic boards so is it possible that I fried whatever component is responsible for the LTE connectivity? Is that even possible, that literally every single function of this phone works flawlessly except one specific thing like 3G/4G? I'm still planning to keep the phone as my daily, even if I'm relegated to 1x on the road, purely for the fact that it survived the dip and I think that's pretty awesome. It'll just have to be on WiFi a whole lot more I guess.
Thanks in advanced. Sorry for the diatribe.
This is just a guess, but maybe there's some precipitate from the pool water left on the phone (salts, etc) that's messing with it? You could remove it by rinsing the phone with distilled water or something more pure, but that might make things worse.
Turn the phone OFF
put it in a bag of uncooked, dried white rice
Leave it there for 24-48 hours until all the moisture has been sucked out.
Pool water is filled with various ions that are conductive and will damage the phone. Don't turn the phone on until its totally dry.
ok, as a professional repair tech i can tell you that rice has a VERY low chance of success... it isnt as marvelous as everyone thinks it is. it wont absorb much of the moisture in the phone. i have seen numerous phones come through my shop after sitting in rice for days... STILL have standing water in them.
your best bet: if you have tools to take it apart, remove the board, and immediately put it in alcohol. if you have any residual corrosion on the board, take a VERY soft bristled brush and gently wipe the corrosion away.
if you dont have tools/a brush... take the battery out, and submerge the entire thing in 91% (nothing less) rubbing alcohol. you may ruin the lcd, but trust me, a new lcd is a far cry cheaper than a new phone.
also, your battery is likely toasted, buy a new one.
just as a caveat to all, unless you drop your phone in clean city tap water, or distilled water... its going to have contaminants in it, and will corrode your phone, rice or no rice. alcohol displaces the moisture, and removes chemicals/minerals on your board.

Thanks for the response. I did this already about 15 minutes after the dip. I could try for longer but I don't doubt that the dashboard drying finished the job already.

Thanks for the reply, great tips. I own an Optical shop and we have 94% iso alcohol we dilute for various things during lens fabrication, I will try that. For the sake of argument, why would alcohol potentially ruin the LCD if the water didn't? Variance in viscosity? Just wondering.
I will check for corrosion and try the cleaning methods as well. It's insane that everything is working so perfectly except that one thing. It's like they knew that that's this phone's bread and butter, 4G connectivity. Haha.
edit: I had a few spare batteries and battery covers so that's not a problem.

Alcohol has an acidic property that actually burns away at anything. It would take years to dissolve a nail, but it can be a matter of hours for it to destroy the sticky seal around the LCD. Alcohol will not cause corrosion, and will evaporate very quickly.

Thanks! Got it, makes total sense. The Rezound has actually proved to be one of the most simple phones to tear apart, at least in my experience. Will take the board out and just soak that puppy overnight in alcohol, then brush away any corrosion that I may find as recommended earlier.
Thanks again.

I don't know about overnight, maybe that other guy who knows more can say. But, 12 hours is a LONG time in alcohol. I would say put it in there for maybe 4 hours.

Will do.
If you don't mind, I had a question since you seem to know a lot: is it entirely plausible that the phone's 4G circuitry (or whatever the technical term is) is simply being shorted by some kind of corrosion/conductive particle from my pool water? I know I keep saying this, but it's just so bizarre that the phone is functioning flawlessly besides this one issue.
Semi-update for the saga: just re-flashed radio and kernel and no-go, still stuck at 1x.
If I dive into the 'hidden' phone settings and change to "LTE only", the phone loses all reception, both data and cellular. If I change it back to the default "CDMA + EvDO/LTE" then it connects fine but only to 1x. This was my validation that since I force LTE, the radio just doesn't seem to be switching on at all since I also lose base cellular. Does anyone know if the phone has 2 com chips, one for CDMA and one for LTE? That would make sense.

What? Generally speaking, most alcohols are more basic than water. Where the heck did you get this "acidic property" from? Usually, the only time an acohol acts like an acid is in the presence of a much stronger base..
Isopropyl alcohol has a pKa of 16.5 while water is ~15.75. Isopropyl alcohol is definitely less acidic than water.

go to a local shipping store like UPS and buy Desiccants 1 packet like the one from the link. Place it into a plastic bag and seal it. the rice trick only works if you do it as soon as you put it in the water. if the water has been air dried then the minerals in the water have already dried on top of the board.
if it wont breath life back into the phone, you will need to take a part the phone and clean it with ISO 91% or higher. you can get 99% from a pharmacy, its the best IMO.

What? Generally speaking, most alcohols are more basic than water. Where the heck did you get this "acidic" property from? Usually, the only time an acohol acts like an acid is in the presence of a much stronger base..
Isopropyl alcohol has a pKa of 16.5 while water is ~15.75. Isopropyl alcohol is definitely less acidic than water.

How long do you recommend I soak the circuit board in the 91%+ alcohol solution?

Not very long at all. No more than 20 or 30 seconds at a time should do. You can repeat a couple times if necessary. you just don't want to leave it submerged too long. Isopropyl alcohol is definitely not acidic, but it is a relatively strong solvent. It will dissolve things like adhesives and glues if you let it soak too long.
If you have a small, clean, softbristle paintbrush, you can use that while its soaked to remove any contaminants from the board, or brush off any corrosion that may have started from the chlorinated water. Blowing it dry with compressed air usually helps too, that way you're not wiping it with a paper towel or something which could cause static charge to build up and fry sensitive components.
As mentioned above, getting a desiccant is a good idea if you haven't taken it apart yet. That will work much better than the rice trick.
I sure hope I can fix this. Haha.

you should also make sure you thoroughly clean the back cover and all the contacts on the back of the phone. The speed test results could be nothing more than poor contact between the antennas in the back cover and the contacts on the back of the phone.

S4 Spent 20 Seconds In a Pool - And Lives

Yep. On Monday I dropped my S4 in the pool and it spend a good 20 seconds underwater. It was in the deepest part of my pool and I wasn't about to jump into the cold water to get it. I have insurance and all that, so I just grabbed a net and pulled it out.
I was almost certain that this phone wouldn't be working no matter what I did. Still, I pulled the battery out the second I got it out of the water and stuck it in rice for about 24 hours. The first 10 hours or so I left it in a hot room that may have had 10% humidity, and the last 14 hours I put it in a dry, cold room.
Lo and behold this morning when I put the battery in and held the power button, it powered up! Everything works - earpiece, speaker, both mic's, notification light, proximity, IR, screen, digitizer, headphone jack, capacitive buttons/lights, home button, etc. etc. Everything works!
Pretty awesome to be honest, Wanted to gloat a bit.
Had that happen to my S3. It worked pretty good for a few days and then it would get VERY hot and battery would only last about 4 hours.
I found some corrosion on the mobo from the chlorinated pool water. Perhaps you won't have that issue but if you do, PM me and I'll let you know what drastic measure I took to fix it. I rather not put it out there to all in fear someone will do it and then blame me for any issues they have lol.
It took nothing but about $7.00 and my time.
Good luck!
video or it didn't happen.
haha jk that's awesome man!
This has inspired me to start showering with my phone.

That's a awesome story there glad it still worked I do have a question did you have a case or no if so what?
FYI, If this happens to anyone else:
If an electronic device gets dunked in water one thing you can do is to disassemble it as far as you're comfortable doing and then re-dunk the device in distilled water. The distilled water will help remove residues left behind by tap water or pool water. Works best when said device is still wet from original dunk.
Then if you have some on hand, an electronics circuit cleaner can be sprayed liberally all over and in to displace the remaining water. The cleaning solvent will evaporate much faster and safer for the device.
Then I'd stick said device in a bag of rice in a heated room. And pray. Because more often then not it won't matter what you do the device will still be ruined.
Tried to recreate the pool drop......phone DID work fine, but screen cracked when it hit the ice. Gotta love Wisconsin!
Thats such crap! i get pulled into a pool by drunk friend with the S4 in my pocket. Wasnt even in the water for 10 seconds and my S4 never ever turned on again. I guess they are not all made equal lol

That sounds like it would be a good idea, using a clean water without any minerals, chemicals, etc. in it to go ahead and flush everything out. I didn't do this. I was cleaning my pool mainly because it hadn't been touched in a while and there wasn't any chlorine in the water. Usually that's bad for a pool owner, algae, but for me this time it seems to have been a blessing.

It also depends on how well taken care of the water is. If it had a high chlorine level it can cause corrosion much faster than usual.

Yep! I had this Cruzer-Light case on my phone at the time. It's extremely tight fitting on the device, usually peels off the back-cover whenever I take it off. I'm sure it helped because it sealed the edges along the back cover.
The water-strip underneath the battery on the phone and the strip on the battery triggered, but I didn't find any water on the SDCard or the SIM. So maybe the case helped with that a little bit.
Wow, that's amazing!
