Word of warning on the waterproofness of the XZU - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

I know I'm not the first to write a thread like this, and I doubt I'll be the last but....
Took my XZU in the swimming pool with me today, and it has not survived. I made extremely sure all flaps were securely fastened beforehand. Even checked that there was no dirt in the seals. I was in the shallow end of the pool, which is only ~0.5M deep, and yet after 5 mins in the water recording some vids with the GF, the phone is now dead!
Seems like some water got in behind the volume rocker, so now the phone thinks both volume buttons are permanently pressed, leading to a bootloop when trying to turn the phone on as effectively the power+vol up+vol down buttons are all pressed.
I am not impressed! I've taken the phone in the shower with me before without any problems, and tested the waterproofing in the kitchen sink before too, so I expected it to be fine. However it seems this time I was unlucky!
Moral of the story: While the XZU is waterproof(ish)... don't take it in the pool unless you don't care about the phone too much! There is a fair chance it will not survive. Personally I'm now hoping the old "leave it in a bag of rice" trick will help.

if it is just the volume rocker buttons it should survive, good luck

It was always dubious to me all this waterproof hype
Sad to hear this happend

It's ironic how they show ads for the XZU getting toyed around in a swimming pool yet the official documentation states that the phone not be submerged in the swimming pool, sea water, solventents etc.

Sorry to hear. I took mine in the pool several times and did not have any problems. Though I did not submerge it for more than a few seconds at a time.
I was unimpressed, as the touchscreen was nigh impossible to use with wet hands. They should have included a dedicated camera button like on the smaller xperias.
Folks around me were impressed though. They could not believe I had the audacity to bring a phone anywhere near water.

I wonder how many dead S5 there has been from water?

There's a reason why it's not rated the same as a divers' watch. IPxx ratings vs NEMAxx ratings. I just lol-ed when I saw the rating, wondering how many people understand what's the meaning, what it takes to pass the test (to be able to say it's rated for it). Same goes with waterproof professional DSLRs and lenses, and how most end up broken out of warranty. Ask me how I know..

Quick update on this: The phone remained screwed for a LONG time, but in the end it is now once again working fine! :good: I had to leave the phone in a bag of rice for a week before the power/volume buttons began working properly and the phone stopped rebooting. The power button is still a little unresponsive even now, but at least the phone is back to full working order. :good:

coming from a xperia z and expecting my z ultra today(SO EXCITED, HURRY UPS !) this has me a little concerned.
im not the type to go into a pool with my phone, or even show off to my friends that i can dump my phone into a glass of water(whats so practical about that?) but i am the type to rinse my phone under the faucet probably once a day.
with my xperia z, before i knew about the gap problem in the glass i would do this, and it caused water damage.
i want to be able to wash my xperia z ultra under water without having any concerns!

Why the need to wash every day?
Mine has been damp (rain) a few times, and properly wet twice (videos of giant kokopu).

I wouldn't trashed mine swimming or into the shower, but I do exist it to survive in a steamy kitchen or bathroom, or an outer pocket when it rains. Being able to play Ingress and not worry about a few spots of rain is nice.

AT&T Galaxy S II - Submerged for ten seconds and working!!!!

I've always read many people telling tales of their phones being ruined by being dropped in water and pretty much either having to do the rice bowl treatment for a week or giving their phone a tear jerking burial/insurance return. Well here's my tale:
While defrosting some zip lock bagged steaks in a kitchen sink full of water my Galaxy S II which was streaming Pandora at the time decided it either didn't want to sit on the counter with the seasoning or decided that it would be nice to go for a swim - actually it was probably the grocery bag being moved that knocked it into the sink - me not paying attention noticed the change in sound of the streaming music from clear to muffled looked for it then in disbelief saw the phone at the bottom of the water filled sink!!!!
I think my heart grew 10 times smaller as I thrust my hand into the sink pulling the phone out from under the depths of the water and zip locked frozen steaks, as I pulled it out from the water the music was still playing but sounded rather tinny so I frantically took a towel and wrapped it around the phone to get the water off of it then pushed the power button to see the screen light up to the lock screen. I then swiped the unlock screen and quickly closed pandora and frantically pressed the power button choosing the shutdown option dreading the worst that the phone was playing it's curtain call song and was about to die any second, then the screen went thru the shut down phase then the screen went blank and all of a sudden it turned back on and I saw the android mascot and some red and yellow text (perhaps I pushed the power button too long or the phone looked like it went into recovery mode?) and started doing "something". I said oh sh*t put the phone on the counter screen down and peeled off the back cover and yanked the battery.
at this moment I started examining the phone, the inside was completely dry sans a droplet of water over by where you pry off the back, no water on around or under the battery, around the camera or flash, the power or volume rocker, or any visible leakage around the screen. I then shook he phone over the towel I had initially dried the submerged phone with and did see a drop come from the speaker slits and then I put my mouth to both the usb and headphone jacks to suck water out of those openings (phone CPR?) and got a tiny drop maybe from the USB but nothing from the headphone jack.
At this point I was still in shock but very surprised that the phone was pretty stone dry sans from the water I wiped off of it and the tiny bit that was in the speaker opening. I gave everything a once over again with the towel just in case I missed some microscopic droplets and shook the phone again put the battery back in put the back back on and pressed the power button and voila, the Samsung Galaxy S II logo popped up and in no time the phone was back on and running like nothing happened - I ran a plethora of tests for the rest of the nigh dreading the worst but everything was golden with the exception that the speaker sounded a little tinnier that it initially was which pretty much cleared up buy the morning and sound as lout as it was out the box, I think that the water on the speaker had to dry.
Call me lucky but I've never never never experienced such amazement with a phone before in my life, it was as if the phone had a waterproof force field around it lol. I had initially though about taking the phone back to wait for the Galaxy Nexus on ATT but after that experience I'm totally on board with the Galaxy S II - I did get a tad paranoid that something might end up going wrong with the phone from the submerging to I took it back to the store last night to exchange it for another stating the speaker sounded tinny which they gladly did and after grueling task of reconfiguring all my settings and installing all my apps the new one is back as my main player and my Captivate is back in it's box (used it during my paranoid night of testing everything after the submerging).
Call me sold, I'll definately be keeping the wonder phone AKA Galaxy S II until the Galaxy S3 comes out , and I'll definitely be keeping it away from water, not gonna try my luck twice!!! Glad to see it's somewhat waterproof but please don't try this at home my heart could barely take it LOL!!!
Wow, I would panic if that happened to my brand new phone! Glad yours is still working
just tried this and it doesn't work
Next time (hopefully never) just leave it in a bag of rice for a while just in case instead of just powering it back on.
Coincidently, I came across this video today of the original Galaxy S:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8puSOR2wWfQ
When I used to work for best buy repairing laptops at their GSC, I had a broken keyboard laptop come in. When I went to replace it, I found corrosion from head to toe all over the motherboard from some sort of spill. But everything on the laptop still worked (sans the KB, but it did after replacing). I tested the hell out of it, took pictures of the water damage, wrote it up for the customer. Some people just get lucky with water damage

Glad you didn't wreck your phone dude, that would /could have been really horrible.
Cool, I'm gonna give it a try....... NOT!
Years ago (late 90's I believe) I had an Nokia 6130 that I dropped in a inch plus puddle in a parking lot as I ran into the store on a rainy day. I didn't notice it until I was returning to my car later. Had to be at least 10 minutes or more. I let it dry out over night and to my surprise it functioned. I don't remember but I think the battery may have come off when it hit the ground, either way it pretty impressive.
Sheesh.... I don't think I would've waited for it to shut down... I would have been yanking that battery out post-haste.
Congrats, you were a lucky one... I think you should go buy some lottery tickets tonight... Don't wait until tomorrow.
Don
Yeah I had though about the rice bowl treatment before turning it back on but since it was so unbelievably dry and water free I took the chance and turned it right back on, even plugged the sucker in to charge it back to 100% leaving it on the charger all night with no issues at all the next day. I should have kept it as a good luck charm but didn't want to press my luck and have something go awry later so since it was still working with no issues I took it back the following night to exchange for a new one - just in case.
Let's see a metal phone take such abuse LOL, like it or not Samsung knows what they are going making their phones out of lightweight yet solid feeling plastic components, survive drops, scratch resistant screen and now add to the list moderately waterproof - it takes a licking and keeps on ticking! I summarize it down to the plastic, plastic expands as it gets warm which probably made a more watertight seal than when turned off, flimsy back my foot - I doubt a phone like the Inspire would have survived that dunking without catastrophic results.
As Fragile as it seems the Galaxy S II is pretty safe to carry around naked and survive most elements, and that's how I'll continue to carry it - while making sure to avoid water like the plague!!!
phones are weird when it comes to water, I had an iPhone 3G that sat in 3 feet of lake water for a good bit -- it still works to this day -- it had the same tinny sounding speakers for awhile and occasionally an incoming call would have really odd ring sound... when that happened i would have to hang up and call back -- but rarely happened.
Glad to know the SGS2 is potentially [moderately] safe against water exposure
I have lost a few family members to water, but not my phone!
Glad to hear I might have a chance when dropping this bad-boy into my sink.

[Q] Help: Touch Screen not working?

So i took my phone to the pool dip it in the water for a bit and made sure that the flaps were closed and sealed. After a couple hours of the pool, my phones screen started to go haywire like it thinks someone is touching the phone. i can't enter my password or do anything. I placed in rice for half a day and left it in an oven at about 100 degree F for about 10 minutes to dry out anything if it was to have any water and the screen acts the same. The water indicator has not been set off.
I live in the USA so sonyw arrant support would be of no use. any suggestion?

Usually drying the screen should fix it.
The problem with swimming pools are that they have chlorine in them. Sony only advertises waterproofing for fresh water. The chlorine may have reacted with something, making the touchscreen go completely nuts for this extensive period of time.
I would've avoided the oven if I were you.

any possibility of repairs?
Everything works, i just utilize the touchscreen. if i let it dry even more, would that be able to save the touchscreen?
I dont understand how water could have got in as i was literally holding the flaps down when it went underwater.

Like I said, it's the chlorine, not the water.
Of course you can get a repair. Just don't tell them you dipped it in a swimming pool (Sony's waterproofing page actually restricts usage of phone in a swimming pool).
Just tell them you got it in water and it stayed crazy.
I just realised, is glove mode enabled in settings?
This option makes the touchscreen super sensitive.
well since i live in USA, i dont think sony will support warranty repairs.
I dont recall if glove mode is on but i do have tap to wake on. I do noticed that even with the slight touch (hair) the screen would respond to it prior to this issue. Is there a way to reformat the phone with the password on? i tried googling some stuff but found little info.

swimming pool is okay
i've seen this on sony xperia care for the Z2 :
Using your device in wet and dusty conditions
You can use your device:
in dusty environments, for example, on a windy beach.
when your fingers are wet.
in some extreme weather conditions, for example, when it’s snowing or raining.
in fresh (non-saline) water depths of 1.5 metres or less, for example, in a fresh water lake or river.
in a chlorinated swimming pool.
Same issue

Sorry for the bump, but I'm having the exact same issue after (slight) usage in the pool, I'm still covered under warranty but just in case I wanted to know what cause this and what is the fix.
Thanks in advance
how much sony service charges to repair the screen?

OnePlus 2 extremely susceptible to water damage

Ad the title says, be warned fellow OnePlus 2 users! As of about 3months of ownership, 3 features of my op2 have broken due to water damage, without ever getting water in the phone. Simply by leaving my phone in my bathroom during my morning shower, the finger print scanner and both cameras stopped working. The fingerprint scanner broke about a month ago after stopping for days at a time and hadn't worked since, I assumed that the damage was due to water entering the phone via the vapor from my warm showers. Just this morning, while keeping my phone a safe distance from my shower, water entered both the rear and front cameras. I managed to fix the rear camera with very light blowdrying and a bag rice, but the front camera has a horrible water "filter" that prevents any light from being detected. Obviously, km extremely angry with OnePlus quality control, never in 6 years of smartphone ownership has something like this been an issue, but I guess it's my fault for purchasing the phone. Be wary and keep your phone away from any water!
Never left my phone in the washroom when showering. Thought this was common sense. Unless they made it air tight, steam will be getting into the tiny gaps between the home button and case, or the camera lens. This is better than my TF101 which literally have a layer of dust on the inside of the rear camera lens.

So you left your phone a "safe distance" away, yet enough water entered to flood the camera and short the fp sensor. And you're angry at OP because they didn't explicitly tell you not to expose it to extreme humidity?

I don't think you get the point, it was a good 5 ft from the shower with moderately warm water with a vent and window open. There was not a large amount of humidity at all. I understand it is not wise to leave it like this but there was very little moisture in the room, and it was there for a maximum of 7 minutes. The fingerprint scanner broke by washing my hands then touching my phone. I understand I should not have had it in the room in the first place, but there is clearly a quality assurance issue when it comes to water, no other phone has had a problem like this for me, and that includes accidental submersion of my opo. I'm simply warning people to not make the same mistake I have, albeit I don't consider it too much of a mistake rather than too much trust in my phone
I think I've seen a thread like this for every device on xda (slight hyperbole).
Electronics and moisture/humidity don't go together.
Alright. I guess this was just a misconception in my part, but no need to criticize too much. I will accept the blame for the cameras, but the home button I honestly don't understand how a drop of water destroys it. I regret creating this thread, I didn't mean to sound rude or unappreciative, I was just fed up and in the moment. I fixed my front facing camera but my home button is still unresponsive. Don't make the mistakes I have, consider this thread merely a warning, don't be stupid (like me)
Seriously - I've taken ALL my phones into the bathroom with me so far, including those that were waterproof and those that weren't. NEVER had any issues, even when I showered with the windows closed. So I don't think a phone should break like that. And it makes me afraid to take my OPT out when it's raining or when I'm in the snow, if a slight bit of water can mess with the fp sensor like that (read in another thread that a user simply pressed the home button with a wet finger and it stopped working.)
Well, i bring my OPO n OP2 oftenly to bathroom, so i can read news and elses while doing what we all know, hahaha.
but when i'm showering i always put it inside my pants pocket.
so far no harm is caused by doing so...
yes, anytime there are openings in a device which would allow water or vapor in there should be added protection around that point. it's known as ingress protection or ip rating. the oneplus one has no ingress proection certification, my guess is the two also is not certified.
I've used my OPT in slight rain and I also like to listen to music while showering and its working like it is supposed to.
While this doesn't really help, it's crazy how much the device can vary unit to unit. With the ones reporting pretty much no submersion but taking bad water damage to this one:

Maybe using a decent case that covers up the phone will help in situations like this? on the flip side, i have taken almost every phone i own into the bathroom regularly and never had this kind of an issue...and it gets quite steamy in my bathroom when I'm showering...i take my Sony Z5P in there now and never had an issue...what I don't understand is that the One Plus Two was shown in commercials with water all over it no? Or that may have been the One...I thought this phone could handle usage in rain, etc with no issue...surely that's worse than humidity right? I think maybe you just got a defective phone or there may be something not working properly on the mainboard....I'd RMA it.

Dude, do you know that the Samsung Galaxy core gets damaged if the humidity is above 55%?
You've exposed a phone to about 90%+ humidity and you expect it to survive?
And I take my op2 to the toilet everyday. I'm typing from it right now.
Not meaning to contradict this but... I always take a shower while listening to music in my OP2 and nothing bad had happened to it (and I use a lot of hot water which causes a big amount of vapor). I've even splashed (accidentally) some water on it. I already have one month and 9 days with the phone working fine.
If the humidity messed with your HOME button try this, it really worked for me:

Just my 2 cents but guy c'mon a shower is common to fog plus have driplets or droplets dripping down the mirrors 12 feet away every single time I shower and you really think OnePlus is at fault here....
This is where So Called flagship companies win out in the majority's minds, Because every minor or major issue brought on by the avg. slow person (sorry but really chief) they just cover the device with a simple warranty and just replace replace replace.
I'd rather save $600.00+ on my Non Contracted Device from @oneplus and let people like you just go buy a Biphone or get a Samsung whatever the drones buy these days....
Stop Blaming OnePlus for your shortcomings in this life people it is just your cellphone.
In my opinion a damn good one coming from a OPO and after that a Nexus 5 all were priced right but definetly still improving every purchase.
Idk but i wash my op2 sometimes with water under a running tap and its completely fine.[emoji14] (only when it gets pretty dirty)

I've left this thread quiet for months now and have clearly taken back my comments. You don't understand the environment the phone was in, this shouldn't have happened, and other users have reported using their phone IN the shower. It's obviously not normal for so many hardware features to break when I've done this with no issues on every other smartphone I own. I'm not blaming OnePlus , maybe I'm just blaming my own model, but the events I went through are absolutely not normal

Please help! Water Damaged Xperia Z2!

Hey guys. I recently had to walk in the rain for about 30-40 minutes to my Dads work, and no I don't have a car at the moment. My phone had closed flaps and everything when I was walking. I had my rain jacket on but my phone was in my jacket's pocket. When I arrived at my dad's work I saw how wet my phone was, so i dried it off with a towel. First thing i tried was listening to music using my earphones, and it didn't work, so maybe i though it was my earphones. Then I tried to watch an MKBHD video (Yes, why not.) on youtube in landscape mode, but it didn't work, so I tried playing a tilt racing game, and my car didn't turn at all. So up to that point, i got stressed out. So I rebooted my phone, and first thing I noticed was that my Notitfication panel was Stock Marshmallow and not N themed anynmore. Then approx 7 seconds later, BOOM. Everything on screen went gone. Since it wasn't an amoled screen, i could still see that the backlight was still on, with slight darker areas around the bottom right corner. The touchscreen was still working. I was able to boot into the 'invisible recovery' (lol) and I could swipe and press and do everything, but still nothing on-screen was showing. The I looked at both of my cameras, and I could see on moth there was waterdroplets around the lenses. At that point, I got extremely stressed out, but i still ate pizza because i was hungry. (lol) So I putted in rice when i got home overnight. Still nothing happened. When rubbing the power button, i can feel water sliding out gently. I couldn't understand up to that point. "The Z2 is waterproof! Water damage was the last thing on my mind to happen to this phone!" Any solutions or tips from you guys? Thanks alot for any help!
And please don't comment that I'm a troll and i deserve it, because I'm not! Anyway, I just need help on this. Thanks!
Put it back in rice and leave for a lot longer on a radiator. Leave flaps open. Whenever phones act up after being in contact with water you gotta power that thing off. I know to late but keep drying that phone off. Best you can do. I had some say they did it for week. This worries me for my phone. But the phone really isn't that waterproof. This flaps can fail with just a little dust trapped in them..

Hej as I wrote in PM to Brandon, last year I send my phone to service couple of months old z2 for faulty pixels and themselves replaced casing, flaps, and also some parts of screen. They only commented that casing with flaps was faulty. Precaution with water... Then saying that I submerged it in swimming pool for coupe of minutes and shot a great video, phone still works.

I'm about to buy this phone so just wanted to make sure if anyone had issues with waterproofing or water test fails like previous Xperia phones.
Please give me your experience with this device in wet conditions
So far I have found the Z5C has way better waterproofing than the z3c, as you are not needing to move the flap to charge the phone all the time
I have used my phone in the ocean (even though it is not specifically designed to be used in the ocean) and washed it off with fresh water afterwards multiple times, and it works like a charn, no leaks or condensation
@nzzane
Great to hear!
Headphones and sound issues till dries
Also, a kind of obvious note. You will have to wait till the phone dries to charge it, and sound quality will be a bit muffled due to the water (until it dries)
@smardu @nzzane
I can live with that
ill recommend to put duct tape on the string hole
i found on my test water can enter from there only
@Superrman
Are the string hole and flaps connected like open tunnel between them (considered faulty units)?
showers, rinses(not washing machine, just tap or hose), thunderstorms A+ for this phone so far!
Sound does get muffled in direct spray and the occasional water drop changes the song lol but all in all had the phone for a year and could sell it as NEW if needed
@Tingles
I guess Sony waterproof smartphones are getting better and better!
rip

Waterproof??
Yea so I got my z5c back from repair and somehow I damaged the screen with water when running it under a tap. So I guess mine wasn't that waterproof...

Although now that you have had it repaired I would be a little more delicate with that device.:fingers-crossed:
When your phone gets opened, generally consider it to lose its water proofness. However I have been able multiple times using hot glue to perfectly seal it again.
