Wifi issue - E 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Know if it is a software problem or generalized hardware issue? Is there any fix from Motorola, or from us the community? Thank You!

Whats the issue? Mine seems fine.

WiFi reception is poor when you're a few feet, and there are some in between wall.

I have the problem too. In spanish forum there are some users with the same problem.

I've been getting a pretty solid wifi signal. In fact, it can see way more access points from my house than my old Samsung Galaxy could.

WiFi seems fine to me too. I get solid signal everywhere I should.

A large number of spanish users of this smartphone have problems with wifi.

I bought this phone today and I have the exact same issue. WiFi works perfect until you get behind a wall a little far from the router, then it just crumble and disconnect. It's really strange, because just a feet before that point it works reasonably fine.
I'm from Spain too, btw.

I have the problem too, and I'm from Spain. Wi-Fi disconnects when I got in my room. It's strange because exactly in the door it has connection, and if I move 5 cm it shows autentication error. In a spanish forum everyone reports they have the problem, but Motorola assistance only suggest that we should fix the phone.
Could it possible a software (Lollipop) error that can fix with a simple system update? I mean, Motorola should be working on a solution... but we don't know if it's hardware problem or Lollipop...

Me too From Spain

I have the US GSM xt1527 and the WiFi is working fine on mine. I am getting a decent signal about 75 meters from my house at my daughter's bus stop, and I'm also getting a signal when I'm sitting in my car in the parking lot at work (through multiple walls). Hopefully they fix the problem soon for everyone who is having issues.

Same here, I'm from Spain too. So many defective Moto E's here... that's weird.
Mine also has some strange dirt on vertical strips between the screen and the glass... I'm sending it back to Amazon anyway

This is my experience also. Same version. I guess maybe the model is the key.

Gtalk never stays connected

So I've had my Note for 2 days now and I've noticed that Google talk never stays connected. When I wake the phone up and open Gtalk it always shows that it had lost the connection and then starts reconnecting. I'm in the middle of Atlanta and I have never once left LTE coverage, so I know its not a handoff issue.
Has anyone else had trouble with this? Think I'm gonna get the phone switched out for a new one today if this turns out to be just me.

I currently have the same issue, but it's been happening on my last couple of devices before I got my note. Last time I checked / googled (about a month ago) there were a lot of people having this issue with various devices and no solid solution yet so you probably won't need to switch out your note as it may not help.
I've tried a number of things with no success but if anyone else has ideas that would be great.
Wow that is very dissapointing. My Captivate I had before this had no problems what-so-ever with google talk. I really don't want to have to switch back to that, but I use Google talk a lot and it might be a deal killer for me.

No, and to be honest I wouldn't consider that a solution. If my apticate running stock gingerbread was able to work fine with the stock app, then this should too.

I had the Skyrocket, Note and Their LTE elevated 4g. with ALL the at&t LTE devices gtalk will not stay signed in. In fact you are getting disconnected from the Google servers when this happens wo you won't be getting gmails either.
This has been going on for months and mostly happens in LTE markets.
If anyone found a solution to this problem please share.

I actually ended up exchanging mine for a new one, and the new one has never lost the connection whether it be gtalk or google servers in general. I've stayed in the exact same LTE market as well.
When did you exchange it and what market are you in? Maybe they fixed the problem.I last checked early march and it was still happening in San Francisco

I exchanged it last Monday the 12th, the new one never had the problem from the very beginning. I am in the Atlanta area, it seems like it is a problem of individual phones if exchanging for a new one fixed it for me, also not everyone is experiencing the problem from what I can tell.
I have the same issue. Seems like my Atrix doesn't have that problem.

This is not related to a device as I tested with 3 different lte devices and they all had the same issue. I then placed the same sim card in my none lte galaxy note and the problem went away. I haven't checked since early March as I am out of the country but who knows...maybe they finally fixed the issue.

There have been no software updates to this phone at all, I'm using the stock ROM too. If my first phone had the problem and my second one doesn't, that means its an issue with individual devices (maybe a lot if you had the problem on 3 different ones). The chances of there being any changes on AT&T's side at the exact moment I exchanged my phone are absurdly small.

I understand that but i had 4 different devices (LTE note, Galaxy II Skyrocket, One of their new LTE LG phone - forgot the name and their Elevate 4G LTE mifi). They were all on different lines with different simcards and they ALL had the google talk issue.
The only time this was not happening with an LTE device is when i traveled outside of an LTE coverage zone. This is the only time the connection was stable.
You must agree that it is impossible that all of these devices were defected right?
I also have a none LTE galaxy note and a galaxy nexus and this is not happening on those devices (as they are not LTE).
It is something with their LTE network setup that is killing the connection to the Google servers after a certain time of idle.
Just thought I'd add that I'm in an area where I'm on the very edge of the nearest LTE tower, so I'm constantly switching between that and HSPA+ (and WiFi while at home) and I haven't noticed any issues with staying connected with GTalk. None of my friends have noticed me getting disconnected either. The only issue I've had is it doesn't always set me to away when the screen is locked, although it does seem to always set me as Online when I unlock the screen.

To all those with signal issues

I have noticed a good amount of threads popping up with people talking about signal issues, 3g/4g issues, connection issues or phone issues.
I was wondering if we could find out what the common factor here was and what fixes everyone has been using. I know that some people got new sim cars, problem solved. Some people restored to a full stock image via odin, problem solved. Reflashing the stock radio, problem solved.
So has anyone had any other solutions, issues or any other info regarding signal issues or anything relating to that?
Been through this with the Nexus, S3 and S4
The solution is to buy a Motorola RAZR or iphone.
Things that do not work -
Upgrading to the newest version of Android
Updating the Radio
Changing it to CDMA only
Lifting one leg up, putting one hand on your head and pointing your other hand due north
Attaching a sticker antenna to the back
Using some custom baked firmware
Reading posts from people who claimed they've solved the problem.
Using Bluetooth
Not using Bluetooth
Buying a special case
You can get a femtocell repeater if you are in an office or home where you get little reception but it won't help you on the road or just visiting a friend unless you want to set it up every place you are stationary.
In the end trying to fix the radio design flaw with a firmware update is about as useful as trying to fix a shattered TV screen by adjusting the brightness setting. If you read the radio issues on the Verizon Nexus and the Verizon S3 there are a lot of people claiming they solved it but in the end it still sucks.
I have zero issues with data on my s4 I'm on the east coast running clean rom 1.6.5 solid LTE everywhere..

Unfortunately this is very true, every other VZW Non-Samsung phone I've had hasn't exhibited this issue.
Motorola and Apple have had their share of radio/antenna issues as well.

I'm not really talking about comparing the signals to the iPhone or anything. I'm talking about finding a common denominator for the group of people that are suffering from signal, connectivity or phone loss on the s4.

Trying to tie it all together with a common denominator is a logical fallacy. It would be akin to trying to find a common denominator for everyone in the world that has a chronic cough. The causal factor varies from case to case.

The common denominator is we are on Verizon and have Samsung phones. If you want to go further, you could do a subset intersect and see we have the S4 on Verizon. It's like saying what is a common denominator for those people who have safety issues with the Chevy Corvair. It is a design flaw that only could be fixed by replacing the phone with a different model. Trust me, I went down this path with the Nexus and the S3 - magical firmware updates were dangled by fanboys saying they would come and fix the issue but the firmware updates came but they never fixed the issue.
If you want better signal, you could buy a different phone or get a femtocell repeater. TRUST me, I would love a magic bullet to fix the issue but there isn't one. On the plus side you'll get a ton of helpful posts from people saying they never have issues or you must be doing something wrong.
I dont know what is up with all ur phones, but my signal is much better than my old Galaxy Nexus/RAZR M. I am getting 2-3 more bars of 4G at work. At home it use to be only 3G, but now im getting at least 2 bars of 4G. I don't even turn on my WiFi anymore at home or work.
bars dont really mean much...
i have had some odd issues where i will be in home depot or grocery store trying to look something up and it will fail; market doesnt work, browser doesnt work. phone calls and texts (over gvoice so data) wont work.
the razM i had before this was solid. my GF still has the razrM and we were at grocery store other day and if you went the their app there was a coupon to add and the s4 was refusing all data again.
i had similar issues with an old HTC Dinc2 and it was then i started using an app "restart connections" to get data back but it doesnt fix the issue on the s4 i have. if i reboot the phone data comes back.
i have also twice now went to use gmaps and it it attempts to look up an address for 3-5 min and i finally restart the phone and go back in and find the address ASAP after reboot.
something funky is going on and i havent taken the time to try and look at syslogs yet...
i am running the stock MDK rom (rooted) on VZW
reception is odd

I'm in a difficult reception area in the middle of manhattan. Funny thing is that I almost always have 4G - even in my house. At the same time, I never have more than two bars of signal in my house. I have occasionally had trouble making calls (I think the tower I'm reaching is too busy), but once connected, no one has complained and dropped calls are rare.
I don't understand this and don't know whether to complain or not because although there are almost no bars, there is reception that is pretty good. So I've left well enough alone.
This phone gets decent reception for me. Dropping from 4g to 3g is new for me after coming from an htc rezound though. My rez NEVER dropped 4g in my city anywhere. Guess radios is the one thing htc can do right. My s4 drops to 3g in multiple areas sometimes. Hopefully Samsung keeps getting better with their radios and they'll have me as a customer for more years of they do

This is basically the same issue I have. Only a reboot/data toggle won't fix it. I had two bars(not that it means much, I didn't look at the db) and it kept saying it was communicating with the tower via the green/red up/down indicators, but I couldn't access any data services. I moved my car approximately 500 yards to the south and viola, data again. I don't get why I could make a call, but I couldn't access data.
That being said, it's still better than my Gnex for....well...everything. But I would say worse than my Rezound, Bionic.
i ended up flashing the modem with the ME7 version, while keeping the rest of the ROM on the original MDK. that was about amonth ago and i think ive only had to reboot 1-2 times because of data drop.

Honor 7 and EE signal box issues

Hi all
I was wondering whether the more tech savvy users could help me with a peculiar problem that I've been encountering with my Honor 7. I'm on EE in the UK and since I live in a poor reception area, I've been reliant on the EE signal box ( a femtocell) to get any use out of my phone at home for several years. The box is made by CISCO and was working flawlessly with my Galaxy S4, my brother in law's IPhone 5 etc. Using the Honor 7, I can still receive calls, SMSs etc but am unable to hear the person on the other end (although they can still hear me). I work a lot from home and not being able to receive calls is driving me nuts. I have been on to EE tech support who have been unable to offer a solution apart from sending me a new box which has unfortunately failed to fix the problem.
Since I'm not encountering the issue whilst out I am assuming this is a problem specific to the box, the way it communicates with the phone or maybe a software bug. I have tried fiddling with the settings, scoured the internet for solutions but have had no joy.
Any ideas?
It's a very specific problem and you may be pi$$ing in the wind here, but I am curious to know if anyone knows anything.
I have issues when using wifi at work (through CISCO gear) and my H7, it's woeful (actually there are three H7 users here, and we all have the same poor experience), where everyone else is fine. Wifi at home through a cheapo router running Open-WRT is excellent. I'll probably ask this in another thread, but I'd like to be able switch bands 2.4/5GHz to test and i'm buggerd if i can find that anywhere on the Honor

I suspect you are right-its probably down to hardware compatibility issues as there is no reference to other users experiencing the problem. Meanwhile, my quest for a decent but cheap replacement for the Galaxy S4 continues (after a Cubot 1, Ulefone Be Touch 2 and Honor 7)..might have been better off buying a S6 edge at this rate
Just a shot in the dark, but make sure carrier aggregation is set to Off in the network Settings, and try also switching the band to 3g/2g or 3g only

Thanks-tried both but still no joy. I even swapped my signal box with my mother in law's (an older non CISCO version) with similar results, all of which point to a software issue as far as I can tell. Which is a shame really since its a decent phone and compatibility issues such as this would be a deal breaker for many. I hope the Marshmallow update may solve this-if not, I may have to go back to the deeply flawed, barely useable S4...

I'd like to say "yes", but have found out the hard way that it depends on exactly which part of AT&T's network you intend to use it on.
I created a thread which I haven't yet updated, which outlines some issues I had. Turns out that my X820 as well as a different LeEco X82X (can't remember - same model ) do NOT work with AT&T in my area at all, and I live very close to the antennae. However, when I travel out of town, the phones work great. AT&T can't seem to figure out why this part of their network is different, but something certainly is. YMMV.
At the moment, there doesn't seem to be a large enough sample size in the US to compare notes and find possible network issues with this phone.
I have it, and it works for me in North Florida in AT&T
Sent from my SM-N910T using Tapatalk
I have more info on my issue with this phone on AT&T, and it's an odd one. LTE works great, but if I am directly under the antennae, or within line of site of them, 3G shows full bars, but it does not work and I cannot place or receive a call. If I walk a block away, and have a building between the phone and the antennae, 3G works perfectly. If I initiate a call where it works, I can move back to LOS, and call does not drop. No other phone seems to have this issue, so there is something very different in the 3G implementation in these phones which is responsible for this.
I wish someone out there had an idea as to what is causing this. One of AT&T's network engineers, who witnessed this first-hand, is stumped and I'm short on ideas to remedy it.

I have two of these phones, and both have the issue I described above. If I were to guess, it probably has something to do with initial 3G handshake timing.
One of the phones is running Madsurfer's 21s. It may have been a dirty flash over stock China ROM, but I seem to recall that one being a clean flash (wife's phone, so I don't mess with it much.) The other is Small EUI by aurel V7, dirty flashed over Rom V6-X820 of Bshuy2003.
I have observed no real differences with regard to the 3G connectivity issue between either phone, with any firmware. I'm thinking it is something at a lower level which is causing this odd issue.
I haven't received my max2 yet but I have read through allot of these posts and I remember reading about using the #*#* code to force LTE and it helped mobile connections. Also I saw that 19s CN or 17s India eui has VoLTE support. Lastly I noticed that the posted 23s beta cooked eui that Steve Mars posted has new modem files. You may try that as well. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the info, but I think the issue runs pretty deep inside these phones. If I knew more about the hierarchy of the software/firmware, where network negotiations are concerned, I'd have a better idea where to look for a solution. But I can say that I have tried virtually every ROM and modem file available, and this odd behavior persists. It's possible that it's specific to my home site, but according to the engineer, AT&T's sites are pretty standardized. The fact that other phones don't exhibit it, tends to point to something deep inside the Max2 as being the culprit. It's an insidious problem, as one might not realize that there was an issue, unless one happens to be close to a tower, trying to unsuccessfully make or receive a call, with full bars showing.
IIRC, the iPhone also had some strange issues on the AT&T network in the early days, and it took some concerted effort between AT&T and Apple to get it sorted out. The chances of of something like that happening to solve issues with these phones is probably next to nil.
Randy do you have LTE on your account? Could it be the eNode trying to promote you onto a better link and the baseband failing that negotiation?

I do have LTE on my account. The phone is connected, by default, to LTE, and falls back to WCDMA when making a call as it should. I have monitored signal strengths throughout the process, and they are very high, due to to my proximity to the tower. Locking the phone to WCDMA makes no difference.
When the phone doesn't have line-of-sight to the tower, and/or that LOS is significantly obscured, the UMTS signal goes below -60dba and the phone works perfectly. Thinking the signal strength was the key, the output of the tower was artificially reduced to below that level, as a troubleshooting test. It still did not allow the phones to work on WCDMA to make calls, even though it still showed a 3G connection with full bars. I'm not a telcom engineer, but it really seems like a timing problem, where the reflected signals work, but signals received directly from the transmitter do not. Again, the problem exists only at the point where the 3G link is initiated, either by the handset or the tower. Once a call is established, that session works fine, no matter the proximity to the tower thereafter. But once moved into the areas of LOS to the tower with an active call session and I end the call, the phone can no longer make or receive calls in those areas.
Short answer: sorta

Alright so I have been using this phone for about 6 months and it kinda sorta does. I am using the x820 one btw. I get about 80% up time with this phone. I can't really make or receive calls without the phone dropping them within the 1st minute. Let me explain further. So firstly, when I am on LTE (if not on 4G (I'll explain later)), and try and make a call, I will usually get switched over to 4G and then as the call is attempting it will completely lose service and say I can't complete the call. Then after that attempt, I will usually get my service back. And it will keep doing that unless I get lucky then if I actually can make a call then I will be lucky if I get a full minute or 2 before the call drops because of loss of service. Now for the later explanation. So basically I have noticed just because I am supposed to get LTE doesn't mean you will get the service. Also you will drop service a bunch and it gets very aggravating! I have verified my results in FL, GA, and TN.

LG V30+ Network Connectivity issues

Hi everyone
I'm the proud owner of a LGV30+ (Hong Kong seller on ebay) and using it on O2 here in the UK.
Phone is fantastic - very happy with it and big improvement on my Nexus 6p. I miss stock android but have removed most of the bloat and installed pixel launcher and it's all looking good.
My one problem though is that I used to get rock solid 4g reception at home. The LGv30+ on the other hand keeps dropping from 4g, down to 3g, then back up to 4g again. It's driving me nuts! Phone is fine when I'm in town but just when I'm at home it is doing this. O2 say there are no problems with the mast in my area, and when I put my SIM back into my Nexus 4g was solid as a rock.
Has anyone experienced this issue, and does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?
Many thanks for any help you can offer!
Was the data like this before you removed all bloat? Were you able to test it? If not, I'd ask what all you removed as bloat?

Hi - cheers for replying so quick. Yes the data was doing this before I touched the bloat situation. Only just started addressing bloat this evening and I've only removed a handful of apps thus far...just obvious ones like Calendar, Clock, Contacts, Gallery and Email so far....
I should also add that the reception is solid 4G when I'm in town - it's just when I'm at home When i put SIM back in my old Nexus 6p, the reception is fine so I don't think it is the SIM

Do a backup, then go into the dialer and put in *#546368#*(Put your model number here with no parenthesis, like mine would be 932)#
Try to see if you can turn on all the bands this way?
I'm not sure if that will help but it's worth trying I think.

I have literally just fixed it
In my APN settings I had IP4/IP6 selected. I decided to give IP4 only a try and it worked!! I have 4g.... SOLID AS A ROCK! I have spent hours today with o2 gurus and searching the Internet...so glad to have fixed it.
Many thanks also for helping me out. Appreciate it!

Glad it works for you! I do hope you have no troubles with websites running IP4 only.

Cool! Glad you fixed it. That would be very hard to diagnose!
I had to go into my AT&T APN to confirm it's already on IPv4. I have IPv6 disabled on my wi-fi router as well as my PC, and I have apps on my current rooted phone to disable IPv6 over Wi-Fi for when I am connected to other Wi-Fi networks. Why? I have my reasons, but it does no harm and actually may do some good. Not only in your case but others:

Slight hijack here. I'm waiting for this phone to come to Taiwan, as I'm wanting to dump my HTC 10 because of it's awful battery and WiFi. I'm guessing many will have followed this route as audiophiles. As there is no mention in these threads of WiFi issues I'm guessing it's strong/not an issue. So, anyone come from a 10, and are now happy with the V30 radios?
Very happy, but I had no issue, even on Wi-Fi, with my HTC10 either (Taiwan version too). Radios are just fine.
Slight update to my issue....
I thought I had it fixed but then the problem returned. After spending ages trying to work out the problem, my girlfriend noticed that the same issue was happening on her iPhone! So I think it's a mast issue... And o2 are reporting a problem with the mast in my area. So hopefully will be resolved in due course.
Other than that, absolutely delighted with this phone. Only minor gripe is that I don't have Volte or WiFi calling as I don't have carrier firmware...i have ordered sims from all the major UK carriers tho to see if it works with any of them.

Please keep us updated. I'm specifically interested if it can access volte on the 3 network as if it can it gives you access to their band 20 4g which is stronger
Funnily enough, I have literally just popped in the Three SIM and at the moment no band 20 at home
Had a painful web chat with three so just gave up asking.
Out later tonight tho so will check if it works in town...
I should also add that I've tried EE with no joy too.
Only thing I can say thus far tho is that x-network HD voice seems to be pretty good. I have done 02->ee (HD voice) and ee->o2. Haven't tried three yet as have zilcho reception at home (seems the mast in my area is affecting all the networks... and I actually drove past them putting a new one up this morning...)

A late reply to this post. Made the transition from HTC10 -> LGV30 for the same reasons: audiophile quality and poor battery life of the 10. The V30 radio performance is awful. I am on AT&T in San Francisco using the H931 variant. I often stream hi-res audio (320k MP3 or FLAC) from the EU and many places. The radio connection drops frequently, stream apps become unusable. It either clears itself after minutes of delay or I force the phone into airplane mode and back on. Quite annoying. I am also suspecting AT&T deliberately messing with the radio settings for people who stream a lot.
Just a note that i am with 3 and they have an app that you can download and it allows you to make calls over wifi. The app is called three in touch.
