I had this problem when trying to access the menu for Titanium backup. Try long pressing on the recents or back button. One of those should give you the menu...

I had the same problem with Firefox. In my case I got the menu button back when I switched on the software keys. Go to settings and then buttons. Activate the software buttons instead of the hardware buttons. Open Firefox and there you go the menu is back.
Its only working when Firefox is completely closed! So close completely, activate the software buttons, start Firefox and it should work.
After that you can deactivate the software buttons and the menu is still there. Unfotunately the menu disappears again when Firefox is completely closed.
Haven’t found a constant fix for that so far. Hope this helps. I just use this trick to make settings in Firefox and then I deactivate the software buttons again.

Thanks for the (temporary) workaround. I noticed the same thing:

As already posted, long press the recents button will bring up the menu.

For me it doesn't work in that way

Yes, it did work before the last (and only) OTA update. I remember the "long press" option in settings including the "menu button" behavior.

Holding multi task button pops up the menu in almost all apps..works perfectly in Firefox!!

Long pressing the recents button works for me also after the update.

I suspect that if you change its function from settings (I.e. selecting "turn screen off"), it will not work anymore.

[BRAINSTORM] Back Button Long Press Functionality

I was using my phone today and was making a lot of calls to the same place and was really annoyed on how there is no fast way to redial your last dialed number.
What im thinking would be really helpful for nexus one users is to have a long press on the back button be a shortcut to call the last number dialed.
Now, i dont have much programing skills for this kind of job so i was wondering if i can get a developer willing to look into this.
Thanks!
or maybe force close app?
I agree. the return button should have a function to force stop from an application. or I need to do it everytime in Manage Applications settings page..

Actually there is a quick way to redial. If you look at the modified Phone.apk that Cyanogen uses in his ROMs, I believe its by cytown not too sure, he has an options in your settings where if you hit the call button it will retrieve the last dialed number

My thoughts exactly.
I dunno if either option would utilize the back button well. I mean there's an app on the market called force close and it puts a shortcut in your notification panel. Just pull down the panel and hit the force close button and ur done. Though this is not accessible with apps/games that take up the whole screen, it will work with majority of the apps. I agree that it should have a function but not sure what exactly. What about an undo function? Maybe if u unintentionally paste text or delete text, just press the button to undo. Keep sharing your ideas.

To redial, just hit the green phone button again without looking up a number.
POOF the numbers there..
Same on all phones, just hit talk again and it works.. (FROYO 2.2 confirmed)
Why not just make it remapped like we did on the G1 with the Camera button where its anything we want? It shouldn't be that different from how we did it to the G1 anyways
bright idea!
looking forward to it

Neither of these will work on the Nexus. It has neither a call button nor a camera button. Best we can do is the search button. And there are already apps on the Market that allow you to set the search button to anything you want. So all we need is an apply that, on launch, queries the call log and sends an intent to dial that number to your default dialer app.

No worries, program an app IMO.
Agreed 100%
I would LOVE to see the back button applied as a force close function...
Or am I still going to have to go back to the home screen and tap the "End All Tasks" widget?
OP: Great idea in a slightly skewed direction... I think more users would benefit from a force close function.
Would it actually be a good idea? I have to say the back button is the one I probably spam, and I wouldnt want to force close my ebuddy etc just because it didnt register the gap between my multiple back pressings.
Some programs already build "exiting" by back button in. (e.g. tvguide, astro).
Having a force close function so readily available will just introduce more headaches to applications that use states heavily.

What exactly have you tried? I can't REcompile 4.2 apks yet, but if tablet UI really was removed in 4.2, couldn't the navbar layout file in SysUI be tweaked instead?
The layout file for the navbar doesn't specify a layout gravity or padding. So, wouldn't it be possible to apply those two layout properties to the parent's framelayout to push the keys left?
I would definitely try this, but the N10 I have now is being returned when my 32GB N10 comes in next week...

Yes, but he is suggesting that ppl use LMT launcher (essentially soft key replacement if used right) and then use the toggle to hide the stock keys.
Anyone heard if button savior is going to be updated for 4.2? The menu button doesn't work so it's pretty much unusable.

another, perhaps more drastic, option is use ROMs that are bringing back the old tabletUI (like Paranoid Android).

Yeah, me too. Don't know how it should work.
Yes, it would be great if the navigation buttons could be moved around.
Personally I would like them on the right hand side - of whatever way up I am using.
It is really annoying with the thing sitting comfortably in my lap to have to lift it up to clear my sweater or shirt every time I want to to go back, or to access another app.

First you have to set your Keys on LMT its not just Open it and its done. Pie = something like a key ,its works like when u use the AOSP browser with full screen, that you have buttons at the side and you get like half a circle with options and you move your finger to it. Or you can just set gestures to go back, home or open apps, depends on taste.
- But no, it doesnt move your soft keys to the left, it gives you something better imho, more accesible.
- shadow thanks never tried to rebooot it worked well...

Is anyone able to confirm, that it is working without root...?

Edit: Pie is going to be much better anyway, but still a bit dumbfounded as to why it works on my N4 but not N10.

As was said above me, Google Now is mapped to a long press of the home key.
I have no idea why you would want it to be a double press as that is just literally 2x the wear on a button that will eventually break.
To get S Voice installed also, do a dirty flash and select that option when prompted to select what Samsung apps you want installed.

In JB 21 there is a setting to switch between google now and svoice for the double click. choose the one you want. The trick is. They don't work like regular roms. On most roms its a quick double click to get it to function. In JB it's a delayed pressed. like pressed (count 1) press again. Took me a lil bit to figure it out too.

I'm fine without S noted, and I would love to have long press home for Google Now. However, long press only does recent apps for me. Was that also an option in the rom setup, or is my phone glitching?

I was indeed doing a quick double press, but a long press (tried a lot of durations) isn't working either. I should have mentioned that I did try switching that setting, but no matter what it's on, double click doesn't do anything.

Question How to automatically open keyboard when opening app drawer?

Hi, It would be great to have an option to automatically open the keyboard when opening the app drawer, so you can instantly start typing/searching without reaching for the search bar first. Any idea on how to accomplish this task on my new s23u, asking for a freshly converted iPhone user missing spotlight.
Thanks!
I use the "home screen only" layout because I'm used to the swipe up to search function with the keyboard automatically opening. (only available without app drawer)

Have you been able to get this to work? When I click on Finder access I get two radio buttons (Home Screen and App screen) and you can't select either.
Maybe you need to disable the home screen only from your regular settings.

Not sure what you mean - I def don't want all my apps on my home screens so I have it set to "Home and Apps screens" in home screen layout. Is that what you mean???
Yeah that's what ment. If you have it like that then I'm not sure why you can't select the Apps screen radio button from Good note app.
Try updating the Home up apk or reset some settings.
Try using the Routines, its pretty powerful for all kinds of stuff like this.

I figured it out. You need to disable "swipe down for notifications" in settings to enable Home Up search. It's one or the other. If you have "swipe down for notifications" enabled, then the radio buttons in Home Up search are disabled.
This then means you need to swipe down from the top of the (very tall) screen to see your notifications. It's not really a good trade-off because you get a lot more notifications than use app search (but good for everyone to know it's an option).
Works ok here with swipe down for notification

Can you elaborate? What I'm saying is that you cannot swipe down anywhere on a home screen for both Finder (App) Search and Notifications. If you enable FInder Search anywhere on the home screen, you can only pull down the notification shade from the top of your device.
Are you seeing something different?
I swipe down from home screen to get notifications, I swipe up to get to the apps screen and then at that screen I swipe down to get the search with keyboard on focus.

Isn't that just the app drawer? Anyway, you have it set to all apps on your homescreen so we're not running the same config.

I haven't set all apps to my homescreen.
Here is a screen recording to avoid confusion.

Thanks. The issue with this is that the keyboard doesn't appear automatically with the swipe up, which was the question originally asked.
Indeed but this is expected. The Good lock feature explicitly says that you'll need to swipe down from the app screen for the keyboard to show and focus on the search bar.
What you want is to swipe down from the home screen and have the keyboard immediately show?

That's what the OP asked // the title of this thread.
If you put an icon on a home screen (ideally in the dock) for Sesame or Finder App search, that's what happens (you can start searching immediately). That's what I'm doing. 1 click instead of 2.
I know this isn't exactly what you asked, but you might like it as much or better. Use the One Hand Operation + module in Good Lock. You can set one of the 12 gestures to Finder. It comes up with the keyboard active. I use this module to define a screenshot gesture (swipe diagonally up from bottom right), which I find easier and quicker than other methods. I also define back and forward gestures.
There are a lot of interesting actions that can be assigned.
