Hello all!
I wanted to ask if anyone has used the z5 underwater, like in a pool or the beach, to take pictures. I know it's supposed to do that but recently Sony state that regardless of the IP 68 rating, the phone must not be used in a pool since that rating was accomplish on a lab enviroment and the phone was never really tested on beach or pool conditions.
Some are saying that Sony is doing this just to avoid people using it the wrong way and then asking for a replacement but since this was the main reason why I wanted to buy it I wanted to know what's the real deal.

Yep Sony just wants less people to ruin their phones through stupidity. Anyway, the phones work perfectly fine underwater. I've dipped it in, taken photos and blah blah. Some reviewers have taken videos underwater and so it's good to go. Chill out
Use it carefully if under the water. No sudden moves or dipping it too deep under.

So the sea won't be a good idea...no way you can avoid sudden moves there.
The sea is definitely not recommended due to the salt water. Even in a pool you'll have to clean it thoroughly especially if it's a saline pool instead of a chlorine pool.
I would invest in an inexpensive pouch case for water activities. It adds a little bulk but better safe than sorry.

What about putting it in a zip lock bag? That what I use to do when I went to the beach. I didn't put it underwater but it was some insurance incase something happened. I could still use the touch screen too. I've always wondered if photos and videos would work under water that way
Mmmm I don't like the idea of putting the phone in a case o zip lock bag cause...what's the point of buying a waterproof phone if I need to protect it like any other phone to use it underwater? I'm between phones and one of the main reasons to choose this one was the possibility to used in water so taking into account your comments...I don't know if I'm going to go for it.

I'd take the IP68 rating with a grain of salt. At my old job I use to perform all kinds of environmental testing. The catch is that the test is in a lab under very controlled conditions and the equipment only has to operate to specific requirements. Since Sony determined its own requirements, I'm sure they skewed the test to make it easier. I wouldn't be surprised if the test was done with the phone off. I havent actually done any research on what Sony has published with their testing.
Also, There are difference between water resistance is completely different from salt corrosion. There is nothing worse than salt.
Its just like why I have a case and screen protector on the phone eventhough its suppose to be strong enough.

I'm looking a waterproof, and hardwearing phone for my mum.
She wants an android phone that she can take kayaking with her. She is planning on using an app like 'endomondo' to track her activities on the river but when paddling you do occasionally fall in!
So... a question for all Active owners... how waterproof is it really?
It's not going to go very far underwater, a meter or so at most. The advertising blurb says it should be fine but was after some assurance from users that know!

Google something like "rugged phone 2011" - there are several phones that claim to be especially made for outdoor persuit activities and you'll be able to check the specs (and see what they actually guarantee). I'd also look at (less geeky) sites specialising in such activities - perhaps a canoe club or society. Good money says that they'll have greater expertise on this subject than the average software writer.
One other point - there are protectors available for many phones. The cheapest are basically plastic bags - the dearest are custom fitted, sealed hard-cases (pretty much the same sort of thing you get for cameras). You can find those in online stores but you may get more detailed infromation by looking at specialist outdoor shopping sites (you can always get the info then see if it's cheaper elsewhere).

I've seen waterproof cases for nearly every phone around however would rather it did not have to use a case as it it very important for it to be hassle free and easy to use. She will be upgrading from an old nokia in a plastic bag!

Yes, but my experience says, the network coverage goes quickly down - the deeper You submerege the phone underwater. So speaking underwater or texting is not possible, but....
Camera still works fine even deep.

i discovered water between the main and the second cover and my voice sound robotic after taking a call , there was water in the mic hole ..
i will never drop it again for sure !!

Is this true? I had motorola defy and submerge it on a pitcher for 2hours but still good after that.. No I have an active but never tried to submerge or even splash it with h2o...

Yes, the water is supposed to go between first and second cover. If You open it up, You'll see, the second cover has a seal to make it waterproof. So that's normal.
If mic is wet, the sound distortion is also normal, since water distorts it quite badly. The first cover holds the second tightly to keep it waterproof.
Would something like a Sonim XP3300 Force be suitable - around £250.
That phone is sold as water-proof to 2m for an hour and can even be dropped 2m into concrete without harm (it also claims to have the longest battery life of any phone in the world). Has A-GPS and the usual "extras" to go online etc. Buttons designed to be used whilst wearing gloves. It's basically designed for heavy industry.
Double check but I understand it comes complete with a load of "extras" included in the price - case, car and wall charger, dashboard mount etc - that may make the price more attractive.

This guy actually makes a real life test of the phone. I myself work at construction so I have cement splashing on it, and all I have to do it take a shower with it to make it aaaaalright
Regarding the defy... Well its got a larger screen, but it looks more flimsy than the Active. What sorta put me off on the defy is the quality of the power and minijack rubber plugs. They would only last not so long on my hands... All you have to do on the active is change the back cover. The only drawback for me being accustomed to a physical keyboard amd a 3,7" screen of my Desire Z is the size of the onscreen keyboard of the 3 inch screen.
Also expect somewhat better battery life on the Active than the defy. Almost 50% of the battery drain is from the screen, and having 60% less pixels on a screen you easily go through 2 days of moderate-heavy use.

months ago the S3 was said to be waterproofed with a special technology, so you could even record with the phone under about 1 meter of water.
Now Samsung didn't publish any kind of this feature, but somewhere this phone is much more resistant than any before....

Yes, of course the mic got broken, but the phone itself is still completely functionable. The S3 is the first phone where I signed an insurance for it (primarly because the blue S3 wasn't available in Europe at release and I thought maybe later to switch) so I don't care much about it (handles all cases, even stupidity)... By now it got about four time in heavy rain, completely covered by water. One time I hold it under running water in the kitchen and recorded.. All no problem. The problem I see is that steady water or being dropped somewhere there get's water under the battery case and in the mic input. I'm curious if with the right case you can record under water?
Post your experience with water, but please don't experiment with it as long as you don't have an insurance where your phone is replaced by minutes!

This phone is not waterproofed or been treated in any way different form previous Samsung phones to make it more waterproof or resistant.
Like many other devices Samsung have probably used a hydrophobic coating on the PCB this is common practice but is not generally considered a feature as its not fool proof . I believe the correct term to use would be its water resistant

It's also got moisture-detecting test patches in several places inside, so if water is allowed to enter, you could have a big argument about the warranty!
Not sure where you read this information, but it was never claimed to be waterproof.
As most phones have to (read: are) designed to have some protection to water (i.e. walking out in the rain, you do still need to use the phone on occasion) this phone is no more protected than those. Think about it, if I put my phone in a sealed see through bag I could record with it providing the bag is sealed correctly.
This applies to anything, if it is sealed correctly it will work under water. As the entrance points for water is only through the back cover, microphones etc - if these are air tight sealed then it will be possible to record under water to a certain extent providing it is not to deep where pressure will break the phone - this in theory will work with any phone.
But there is a new sealing technology (can't remember the name) that is like air bubbles (hard to explain how it works, I'll try find a link) put in around the components so that heat can get out etc, but no water or other alien fluids/materials can enter. From what I remember, no products use this yet as it was in development from when I remember reading it. The phone is obviously not using this technology as you already pointed out the mic got damaged.
Wrap layers of sellotape around the phones entry points and record away...just don't go too deep as pressure can do bad things to phones.

this is just hydrophobic coatings there are many of them and many are already used commonly in many devices.
you are probably thinking of those new ones that have been demo'd in the last year in viral fashion like the one with a shoe and chocolate sauce for fabric.

Hi Everyone,
So I was on holiday with my beloved Ultra, and using it in the pool. Cool thing is, this phone is waterproof! That's what I thought until I got on the plane a few hours later and upon trying to use my phablet the touch screen stopped responding. It seemed to function OK, I just couldn't unlock it or use it as there was some kind of hyperactive spectre flying around inside making it seem like the touchscreen was possessed. I looked a little closer, and not only was there condensation visible in both camera lenses, but upon opening the usb cover there was also moisture inside there. I opened the other side, and the moisture indicator was still white, so I think the problem was specifically with the usb port cover.
Anyway, it's not covered under any kind of warranty as I bought it overseas, and I have taken it to a repair shop who confirmed that it's water damaged and that they would need to fix the damaged USB port and replace the screen to make it work again. I just want to buy a new one as it would be cheaper than getting it fixed, but I have some data/apps on the old one I don't want to lose. Any suggestions on the best approach? If the shop can read the eMMC and back it up, could I use that to restore data/apps onto a new phone, or am I better off just getting it fixed...
Advice/opinions appreciated.

I guess this guy's luck was bad. Mine had contact with water a couple of times and thankfully it lived upto its waterproofness promise

This is a stupid reply. I brought it with me in the pool with my kids, made photos and videos underwater (touch block + volume rocker), no problems at all.
Same goes with my wife's Z.
Of course, if you go swimming with the USB flap open, well, you're an idiot. (Not that I accuse OP of being one, just that 80% of the time when I saw someone with a faulty phone/laptop/tablet it was not working because of THEM).

Hopefully someone replies with some advice that is actually helpful... FYI I have used it in the pool (and had it underwater) multiple times before without problems. I always make sure the seals are sitting properly when I close them so I am doubtful it was user error...
The usb port is fully brpken?

good for you, you were lucky. on the xperia forums and on here, there are many MANY people who had their phones damaged from water. Are ALL of them at fault?
however, call sony and ask them (i did):
1) what *guarantee* is there that with the flaps closed the phone will not receive water damage? they will answer none. There is no case where the warranty will cover water damage. Whether it's your fault or the phone's fault, it is irrelevant to sony. they will NOT cover it.
2) what happens if, after *normal use*... notice this: *normal use*, NOT abuse, the flaps lose their sealing ability? Does the warranty cover it? No. Warranty does NOT cover "normal use wear". Which means the flaps WILL lose their sealing ability and you end up with a non-waterproof phone. How soon? NOONE KNOWS because there is no way to actually TEST it, at least not as a USER. You MIGHT be able to have it tested at sony... but that would mean testing it every. single. time. you close any of the flaps...
your phone, at any given point, MAY or MAY NOT be waterproof. However, since you have no way to test it, it means that you CAN NOT TRUST it to be waterproof, which is, of course, means you have to treat it as NOT waterproof.
which, in the end, means the phone is not waterproof.

Blah blah. The phone is waterproof. No need to be all technical and stuff. Can it be used in water for a certain period of time? Yes.
Your post reminds me of when ships were first being built. If a boat ends up sinking from wear and tear does that mean it wasn't a floating device? Also wear and tear....that's why we check our cars at a set time for periodic maintenance because of wear and tear.
I got lax with mine and took it in the shower and got water in it, USB flap is worn. Not the companies, because I didn't take the necessary steps to make sure my phone was periodically maintained.

Ad the title says, be warned fellow OnePlus 2 users! As of about 3months of ownership, 3 features of my op2 have broken due to water damage, without ever getting water in the phone. Simply by leaving my phone in my bathroom during my morning shower, the finger print scanner and both cameras stopped working. The fingerprint scanner broke about a month ago after stopping for days at a time and hadn't worked since, I assumed that the damage was due to water entering the phone via the vapor from my warm showers. Just this morning, while keeping my phone a safe distance from my shower, water entered both the rear and front cameras. I managed to fix the rear camera with very light blowdrying and a bag rice, but the front camera has a horrible water "filter" that prevents any light from being detected. Obviously, km extremely angry with OnePlus quality control, never in 6 years of smartphone ownership has something like this been an issue, but I guess it's my fault for purchasing the phone. Be wary and keep your phone away from any water!
Never left my phone in the washroom when showering. Thought this was common sense. Unless they made it air tight, steam will be getting into the tiny gaps between the home button and case, or the camera lens. This is better than my TF101 which literally have a layer of dust on the inside of the rear camera lens.

I don't think you get the point, it was a good 5 ft from the shower with moderately warm water with a vent and window open. There was not a large amount of humidity at all. I understand it is not wise to leave it like this but there was very little moisture in the room, and it was there for a maximum of 7 minutes. The fingerprint scanner broke by washing my hands then touching my phone. I understand I should not have had it in the room in the first place, but there is clearly a quality assurance issue when it comes to water, no other phone has had a problem like this for me, and that includes accidental submersion of my opo. I'm simply warning people to not make the same mistake I have, albeit I don't consider it too much of a mistake rather than too much trust in my phone

I will accept the blame for the cameras, but the home button I honestly don't understand how a drop of water destroys it. Seriously - I've taken ALL my phones into the bathroom with me so far, including those that were waterproof and those that weren't. NEVER had any issues, even when I showered with the windows closed. So I don't think a phone should break like that. And it makes me afraid to take my OPT out when it's raining or when I'm in the snow, if a slight bit of water can mess with the fp sensor like that (read in another thread that a user simply pressed the home button with a wet finger and it stopped working.)
Well, i bring my OPO n OP2 oftenly to bathroom, so i can read news and elses while doing what we all know, hahaha.
but when i'm showering i always put it inside my pants pocket.
so far no harm is caused by doing so...
yes, anytime there are openings in a device which would allow water or vapor in there should be added protection around that point. it's known as ingress protection or ip rating. the oneplus one has no ingress proection certification, my guess is the two also is not certified.
I've used my OPT in slight rain and I also like to listen to music while showering and its working like it is supposed to.
While this doesn't really help, it's crazy how much the device can vary unit to unit. With the ones reporting pretty much no submersion but taking bad water damage to this one:

Maybe using a decent case that covers up the phone will help in situations like this? on the flip side, i have taken almost every phone i own into the bathroom regularly and never had this kind of an issue...and it gets quite steamy in my bathroom when I'm showering...i take my Sony Z5P in there now and never had an issue...what I don't understand is that the One Plus Two was shown in commercials with water all over it no? Or that may have been the One...I thought this phone could handle usage in rain, etc with no issue...surely that's worse than humidity right? I think maybe you just got a defective phone or there may be something not working properly on the mainboard....I'd RMA it.

Dude, do you know that the Samsung Galaxy core gets damaged if the humidity is above 55%?
You've exposed a phone to about 90%+ humidity and you expect it to survive?
And I take my op2 to the toilet everyday. I'm typing from it right now.
Not meaning to contradict this but... I always take a shower while listening to music in my OP2 and nothing bad had happened to it (and I use a lot of hot water which causes a big amount of vapor). I've even splashed (accidentally) some water on it. I already have one month and 9 days with the phone working fine.

Just my 2 cents but guy c'mon a shower is common to fog plus have driplets or droplets dripping down the mirrors 12 feet away every single time I shower and you really think OnePlus is at fault here....
This is where So Called flagship companies win out in the majority's minds, Because every minor or major issue brought on by the avg. slow person (sorry but really chief) they just cover the device with a simple warranty and just replace replace replace.
I'd rather save $600.00+ on my Non Contracted Device from @oneplus and let people like you just go buy a Biphone or get a Samsung whatever the drones buy these days....
Stop Blaming OnePlus for your shortcomings in this life people it is just your cellphone.
In my opinion a damn good one coming from a OPO and after that a Nexus 5 all were priced right but definetly still improving every purchase.

I've left this thread quiet for months now and have clearly taken back my comments. You don't understand the environment the phone was in, this shouldn't have happened, and other users have reported using their phone IN the shower. It's obviously not normal for so many hardware features to break when I've done this with no issues on every other smartphone I own. I'm not blaming OnePlus , maybe I'm just blaming my own model, but the events I went through are absolutely not normal

So far I have found the Z5C has way better waterproofing than the z3c, as you are not needing to move the flap to charge the phone all the time
I have used my phone in the ocean (even though it is not specifically designed to be used in the ocean) and washed it off with fresh water afterwards multiple times, and it works like a charn, no leaks or condensation

Also, a kind of obvious note. You will have to wait till the phone dries to charge it, and sound quality will be a bit muffled due to the water (until it dries)

Are the string hole and flaps connected like open tunnel between them (considered faulty units)?
showers, rinses(not washing machine, just tap or hose), thunderstorms A+ for this phone so far!
Sound does get muffled in direct spray and the occasional water drop changes the song lol but all in all had the phone for a year and could sell it as NEW if needed

Yea so I got my z5c back from repair and somehow I damaged the screen with water when running it under a tap. So I guess mine wasn't that waterproof...

Yea so I got my z5c back from repair and somehow I damaged the screen with water when running it under a tap. So I guess mine wasn't that waterproof...

IPX5. Protected against low-pressure water jet spray for at least 3 minutes.
IPX8. Protected against the effects of continued immersion in water at depths greater than 1 metre. The exact conditions are specified for each device by the manufacturer.

Although now that you have had it repaired I would be a little more delicate with that device.:fingers-crossed:
When your phone gets opened, generally consider it to lose its water proofness. However I have been able multiple times using hot glue to perfectly seal it again.
Remember there's an easy and reliable way to check if your Xperia is water proof: Xperia Water Resistance Test
