GPL Source - Asus ZenWatch 2

Why hasn't ASUS released the kernel source anywhere for the ZenWatch 2? They're required to publicly release their kernel source (though license requirements obviously aren't very enforceable), and nobody seems to care that ASUS is violating the GPL.
I feel like we need to start bugging ASUS to release their kernel source for the ZenWatch 2. The more people who complain to ASUS, the more likely they'll release it.

I didn't see one mention of the GPL in his post or him asking people to send complaints to ASUS, I think a strongly-worded message might get more attention from ASUS than just asking vaguely for the "source code so we can start dev on it". I'd send a complaint that they're violating the GPL through this form.

Thats perfect! Once we get them to budge we can do way more!

There source is up. Just shows you how to update. Lol.. This watch is weak. And boring.

Do you really have such a bad opinion about our watch?

I personally love it, its a fantastic budget watch.

Not saying its a bad watch for its buck. But Asus should have spent more time on the Bluetooth.

The link you're talking about is the instructions for a firmware update, not source code.
As of January 25th, the source for the ZenWatch 2 isn't up. I haven't received a response to my compliant yet from ASUS. Not sure why you think this watch is 'weak and boring'. If ASUS actually releases the source code there would be a lot more developer interest.

What exactly is wrong with the Bluetooth in this watch? You seem to be the only person complaining about it. I haven't had any Bluetooth issues at all on my ZenWatch 2, but I guess you could've gotten a defective unit.

Me neither. My Bluetooth works great. Maybe it's
Phone and watch combo.

Same here, bluetooth will work across the house, but not very well if im in the basement and my phone is upstairs! thats why I use wifi on it anyways

How is the bluetooth on this watch, have you tested it?

Yeah I have a new smart watch. Tag Heuer. Best watch out there..

I meant, you got a new Zenwatch.

The issue was the same on both watches. If the watch gets more then 7 ft away from the phone. It's no good. I like putting my phone in one place of the house. And be able to go to the other room without carrying my phone. To get my notification. With zenwatch you can't do that.

I rarely have issues. I suspect my issue has more to do with Doze than the watch. Seems like Doze turns off BT, which tells Wear that the watch is disconnected. I then get the disconnected icon on the watch. Usually when I wake up the watch it'll reconnect though. This is all while the phone is in another room and I'm using WiFi.

I've got a G4 and I rarely get any sort of disconnection. I can leave my phone charging on my desk and get notifications while I'm helping someone at their desk 80 feet away. I wonder if it's just an issue with individual watches, or if it's down to the model of phone.

Well I am trying something right now. Day 4 on the custom kernel. Working on the battery first. Then going to the signal. Yes it's missing one day because I flashes 6.0 on the phone. I do turn the watch off between 9pm till 4 in the morning..

You already got a custom kernel for the ZW2?

How did you manage to make a custom kernel for the ZenWatch 2 without the kernel source?

Chances Of Getting A Propper Prime?

I'm hearing nothing but problems. I hear the majority of primes have some form of defect. It seems to me that ASUS screwed up pretty royally with there launch.
I'm in canada and i have a preorder on some small time website. Whats the story? is it only these first few that have defects?
I doubt i would be able to return it to my retailer so im really worried about getting a defected model.
Most things are some small issues so worst that happens is you keep it for a few weeks until stocks fill up and can exchange
My hunch is that the first batch of Primes were defective. ASUS halted the shipment to Canada and delayed the shipment to the US so they could examine existing Prime inventory and correct the wifi problem. They likely had to open each prime to fix it, which likely caused new problems which seen reported here like the Prime screens bleeding light, and looseness, and markings on the basel.
Hopefully those who are waiting in pre-order hell will be the lucky ones who will get the next new batch of Primes fresh off the conveyor belt with the wifi problem fixed.
That's my hunch.

screen bleeding, bad wifi, something else.. lol (not dead pixel, could care less)
plus a couple of peoples are just crapping out on them. those issues would bug the crap out of me.
and i couldn't return it to my provider, but could i return it to ASUS?
If your retailer had them in stock you could return it to them if not have to go through asus
As for issues don't worry many people have perfect tablets some just got unlucky Asus will sort it all out

tell you what. my prime is perfect. not a problem at all.
Mines not. My gamestop prime has horrid wifi screen bleeding and no gps... It actually just rebooted after freezing while viewing this very thread... I just want the tablet to work... I hope gamestop will exchange it with a version thatcomes in jan or feb... Im not even a room over and i am between -70 and -80 on wifi analyzer.... Awful.... But i am willing to wait if it means i can get working prime
kinda makes me glad I didn't get a prime now. after going 4 tfs I wondered if asus could do better with their second Gen tablet... doesn't seem like they've done much qc this go round either.
guess I'll be getting another Sammy when they get released.
I've been using mine all day long, haven't noticed any problems with mine, no screen bleed...wifi works good for my situation, only thing I can see wrong is it looks like I may have one dead pixel but it doesn't bother me enough..plus if it does bother me ill just wait a little but for fresher models

I'm actually glad I ordered my 64 GB now... once I accepted the fact that I wasn't going to get it before Christmas, I am glad and hopeful that some of these initial problems might be ironed out & better quality control put in place, in the next few weeks before I'm expected to receive mine; the rush to push the product out before the holidays being over now.

My Prime is working great. Everything works well including wi-fi and GPS.
No bleeding, battery is great and no lagginess whatsoever, no matter what I am doing.
I doubt "the majority" have problems. It's just that people are more likely to post their problems with their Primes (in the hopes to get them fixed) than others whose Primes are working well.
It's certainly not a clean launch by any means. But to say the majority of Primes are defective is a jumping to conclusions.
If your unit is defective, return it for a new one.
Just got to open mine today for Christmas, although it arrived from Newegg 2 days ago. I also got the docking station. Knock on wood, mine seem to be working just fine so far.
heh...mine was working flawlessly...that is until I charged it to 100% and powered it off. It now will not turn on so I guess I got a nice shiny cutting board for Christmas.

Not to make light of the situation, but it probably would make a good cutting board - did you see the video of that guy cutting apples on the screen? You would need to make sure the juices don't ruin the circuit board, though.

Yup, just there is but it did nothing when I pushed it. The only life in the unit is a green LED when the charger's plugged into the wall. It doesn't even show up on my PC when I plug it in. Good and truly dead it seems.
At least I got a couple of hours out of it before it died. Other than the whole catastrophic power failure thing it was a real pleasure to use...except maybe for the vibration...it also seemed a little busted.

Every new tablet had it's issue. Look at all the early threads for each tablet. Some people had issues, some people didn't. Your choice whether you want to venture down that road or wait. But what I have seen is that the later models, it has taken longer to get root because the development had the earlier models.

Don't send in your tab to asus!!

the tech's there blow. I sent in my tab for the gps issue and got this response;
"Dear Valued Customer,
Per our repair facility, they were unable to duplicate the problem with your ASUS TF201 and test results are NTF (No Trouble Found, all tests passed) for RMA # USG7xxxxxxx.
Please provide more information so we can try to duplicate the issue. Need specifics as to when & how problem occurs and any components being used that could possibly be causing the problem.
"
My response;
"GPS will not lock on to GPS SATELLITES. As in the GPS apps that allow me to see what satellites the GPS can see. This is where the problem is. If you have an app that shows it locks on to satellites please let me know what it is.
I've tried several apps in the android market i.e. GPS Status, none show satellites.
after 7 days of keeping my tab with no more responses, I made 4 complaint calls in the same day. after that I got this;
"Please note this unit may not be defective.
ASUS TF201 come with: Assisted GPS functionality which requires connection to Wifi network in order to acquire location information.
Did GPS work when connected to WiFi?
WTF?!?! My immediate response? this;
"Mr Cruz,
If you're asking do I get my location with WiFi on, then yes I do. My ASUS laptop ALSO gives me my location with WiFi and it doesn't have GPS.
The use of WiFi is soley for the maps and has nothing to do with the GPS itself. GPS gets is coordinates from GPS satellites. Map apps convert the "longitude and latitude" data the GPS gives and points it out relative to its maps.
The app"GPS Status" from the google market (free) is designed to show how many GPS satellites the GPS hardware can find. With or without WiFi. Try it out on your smartphone, you'll see what I'm talking about.
HOWEVER, since you are taking so long and emailing me at the end of the day on a Thursday (like last week), this means I won't hear from anyone until NEXT Thursday to ask the same question. To be honest, if you are not understanding what I'm conveying in these last 2 emails, I don't think you'll really ever will.
Please send back my defective unit asap so I can make complaints to everyone else and show how unhelpfull and unknowledgeable an ASUS tech is concerning tablets and convince people its better to wait for other quad tabs then have this type of problems. My original iPad and Acer A500 had NO issues with this, but my new more expensive tablet can't. You've had my tablet longer than me with no answers.
Again, please send it back. Your tech service is underwhelming and a waste of my time.

What a bunch of idiots they are. You should have told them that even with wifi the GPS doesnt' work, which is true...it might get the location right on google maps but gps still dont' work as the bottom right icon says "searching for gps". If it's searching, it can't possibly get the location from gps but through wifi..... I don't know how these people got a job?
I thought it was pretty obvious the GPS doesn't work at all for a lot of people and that unless they got out the hack saw and hacked into the aluminium in the device they were never going to fix the problem?

Because purposely destroying an insured item as a means to get yourself a brand new one is, in fact, fraud.
I sent mine in as after about three days I noticed a crack at the dock connector, so I noted a lower left light bleed and the GPS. I hope something gets resolved on mine. I'm not trying to be negative but with the price drop at hhgregg, the issues it comes with, and the new one coming out shortly, makes me wonder if Asus is giving up on this model.

Hows that fraud?? My insurance allows for ANY damage to my laptop. Asus kept it over my 15day return period which means I cant return it without losing money now. My a$$, if thats going to happen.
What you think of my "credibility" is irrelevant. My issue with my tab is not UNCOMMON. Fact, I sent it in. Fact, they gave me the run around. Fact, Im pissed I sold my ACER for this more expensive defective unit.
You might think my MORALS are off, but I could care less. I PAID for a fully functional unit that is SUPPOSED to have a working gps in it and they could care less about truly worrying whether its solved or not because theyre worried about THEIR credibility . I also PAID for insurance that ALLOWS me to insure I get a fully functional unit.

Prime from Walmart working ok...

Amazingly enough the Prime I bought from Walmart online the other day is working like it is supposed to be working. I've actually used my Bluetooth connection listening to music streaming down from Google Music and performed a speed test and still was about 20+Mbps speed using speed test. ALL the other units I had wouldn't even get 5Mbps. This is like the 3rd or 4th Prime I had. I can't even remember. And for those GPS people out there I was able to get GPS signal on a %100 humidity day in about 10 seconds. I have no idea what was done, but I'm not letting this one go. I've already sent all my Asus contacts a message asking if they can keep my RMA unit and just refund me the retail price of what I paid for it and to let me keep what I have.
Also the buttons seem easier to press. Like the power button. It has a more tactile feel then all the other ones I had. Along with the volume rocker.
My serial number starts with C20KAS......
FINALLY I'm done with all this BS, only until I get a refund from Asus hopefully. If they don't actually give me a refund I'll have to see what I'll do. I certainly don't want to be the owner of two Prime tablets, equaling over $1000 in price. Ouch!
I think you just got a good one.
I've had my prime since launch, got it from Best Buy, and i've never had one issue with it. GPS, WiFi, BT, and everything else works flawlessly. I do maybe have a "weaker" signal according to the bars on the screen, but I've never dropped a connection or had ANY speed issues.
Love my prime.
Cool story bro
This sounds like you think the tablet would be subpar because it was at a Walmart...

So If i order online I can easily exchange it a few time.... until i get what i want.

Not condoning what you said about stickers swap but it would go back to Asus anyways. It's not going to be put back out for sale when you tell them it don't work right. Walmart would just send it back to Asus, its policy. I tried to get an HP Touchpad someone was taking back a while back during the fire sale they wouldn't let me get it said policy says they have to send back to manufacture once opened.

If we aren't getting the appropriate satisfaction or expected support I really would love to know what to do that would give us our satisfaction within our return time policy time? After that return period is over, we are pretty much stuck with what we have.
I already asked Asus very kindly and eagerly if they would keep my RMA unit and just refund me my money because I purchased another prime that is working better turned me down instantly with no regard to my problem. I was backed into a corner like a caged animal with very LIMITED options. Since money doesn't grow on trees for me I'm at a loss on what to do or where to go. Asus doesn't respond to my emails anymore and these "updates" can't fix dead pixels either. I hope people understand where I'm coming from.
Wow! That's messed up. Have you tried explaining your situation to Gary?

[Q] Android Wear 5.1.1 for LG G Watch roll out?

Apparently AW 5.1.1 is already rolling out for the Asus Zenwatch.

Just now I checked.

Nope, the Android Wear updates are coming directly from google. All Android Wear watches are like nexus devices.
Yes they are all updated from Google servers, but Google are fairly random with all their updates, the order they do them in never makes any sense to anyone, least of all them.
Here is how the update rollouts work. This applies to Nexus updates, Google app updates, and Android Wear updates. http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1r1dz4/44_kitkat_has_started_rolling_out_on_the_n4/cdiwt6f
It is, mostly.
Rollouts are conducted in phases. Typically they start at 1% of devices for around 24 - 48 hours; we watch the return rates and resulting device checkins and error reports (if any), and make sure nothing looks wrong before sending it to more. Then typically it goes to 25%, 50%, 100% over the course of a week or two.
What the percentages mean is that when your device checks in, it has a 1% chance (for example) of being offered the OTA. If it doesn't (randomly) get an offer, it will never get an offer until the next batch.
IOW, once your device checks in and gets turned down, that's it until the next batch. Mashing on the "check for updates" button just causes your device to check in again, and get automatically turned down again. Think about how that makes your device feel! WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE PHONES?!
That said, once the new batch does start, hitting that button does give you a new roll of the dice -- but once. Since devices usually only check in for system updates every 24 hours (I think? Certainly on a many-hours basis) this can get you your shot sooner than it would happen on its own.
So, mash away. Just be patient, and mashing on it more often than once or twice a day isn't going to gain you anything.
Edit: also, keep in mind that this isn't first-come/first-served. You're not racing other devices to get your slot in the current batch, or something.

Yes, but what I meant is the order that devices get it, not individual units.
Looks like it may be rolling out today.

im updating mine
It seems to push notifications to the watch quicker (before it would always lag a second or two) and there seems to be a lot more options, like having a flashlight, the ability to change font sizes, etc.
Has any one grabbed the OTA?
Man I can't wait ! Still haven't got ota how do gestures work ?

It's Q3, wear is our Wear 2?

Anyone know a more precise date? I'm getting king of annoyed with Asus at this point.
"In search of incredible. Haven't found it yet"
No ETA! I actually lost faith in Wear 2!
It's not just Asus. Google has really goofed the Android Wear 2.0 rollout. For an Android version that was supposed to be under tight control, WTH Google?

Think the 2.0 update just hit my watch
May have hit sooner, I didn't wear it today.

That's probably build M6E70C which is still Marshmallow as this build was released not too long ago
You're right. Seems to be a routine security update. Damn I was so hopeful. Back to hurry up and wait.
I couldn't have put it better than a random commenter on an article about this.
"By the time this update arrives google will have announced androidwear 7"
Good news, the update could arrive any day now.

Don't shoot the messenger!
Ya this is the last asus product idea they have a horrible track record of updating their devices.
Asus told me the update is rolling out late Q2 or even the beginning of Q3.... Bet it will be delayed again when we hit Q3.

This is unfortunately probably true.
Unfortunately, we don't know where the hold up is. Unlike normal Android builds, Google controls Android Wear and builds the ROM which OEMs then tweak. Supposedly, the Zenwatches are being held up by Google, not Asus. I don't get why, since all Android watches from the ZW2 generation had the exact same SoC, and I believe all of the watches in the ZW3 generation also have the exact same SoC, but there you have it.
Shut up about wear 2.0. The watch works fine as it is.
It'll be here by Xmas. Maybe not this Xmas.

Not for everyone. I would like to just type or write words on my watch like you can do in AW2.0 instead of saying them out loud. But I can't right now... Also there are a lot of problems with the watch using my phone's GPS, which I didn't have on WebWear 2.0. So no, it isn't working fine as it is for me.

Not only that, but I have constant issues with my phone going to DnD as well as text messages delayed on my Zenwatch for 5,10,15+ minutes, too. We need Android Wear 2.0 sooner rather than later! I rely on message alerts when I am running equipment and can't hear/feel my phone!
Not to mention uninstalling useless apps. I get notified Everytime I drive by a Lowe's. The app on the watch literally does nothing useful. I can't uninstall it without uninstalling the app from my phone.

You do know you can turn off notifications for that?
When a company says they will have something out by a specific time they should either keep to their word or at least be honest if there's delays. ASUS so far has not replied to one single comment I've posted on social media on why we haven't gotten the update. To me that's a sign of a company that doesn't care about it's customers is when they don't even attempt to answer simple questions. Even a blank "it's delayed until further notice" is better than dead silence.
