move to sd - missing option? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Hi.
I tried to convert my SD card into an adoptable storage without a need to force the root but as you are probably aware this doesn't seem to be working properly (g5 can see sd card as a extra device storage but you just can't use that capacity).
So I formatted my sd card back to a portable storage. Than I was trying to move some of my large apps into sd card but there is no option to do it at all.
I checked every single app and there is no "move to SD" button as I have in my previous phones. I believe this is not a marshmallow "feature" as I've seen galaxy s7 screen shoots showing that working.
Any chance I can have this option back?
I hope so as I can't understand why lg released a flagship phone without this option...

That option doesn't exist in any Marshmallow rom afaik @copymaker, I didn't have it on my S4 either.

Ok. So Google erased that option due to the new feature which is adoptable storage. But manufacturers like LG and Samsung blocked it and now we have neither of them available... That's weird

Looks like adaptable storage works though, http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/how-to/enable-adoptable-storage-t3368207
I'd never use it because that would mean losing all my data if I switch phones. Once it's set to internal storage it will only work in that phone with that rom, but not in other phones and afaik not on your PC either. No idea who thought THAT up, but in my opinion that's utterly stupid.

I actually contacted LG about it, they insist its a developer issue with apps bot being compatible!
I pointed out my LG G4 has the ability to do so and that is running 6.0.1, it was at that point the conversation went bad to worse. Seems like they dont have a clue?

It can be done on Sprint LG G5, I followed the ADB process in the following link (no root required) and now I can move apps to my MicroSD card:

I contacted them as well, I got told it was google who did it. It's a shame whoever is responsible it was a useful feature on a phone with limited storage.

I think they are talking ****? Like i said my G4 allows me to donit so why google specifically target a handset to not have any feature on their OS other handset models have?
I feel its a cop out? They think they can baffle people with bull**** and we will accept it!
LG have gone down in my estimation in the way they have handled things.

it could be a plan by google to make sd cards useless on phones as they can't stop manufacturers including them.
I don't think any current google device has an sd card so no cards is the google standard

Im not so sure its google? Seriously think about it both G4 and G5 are 6.0x variants. My mates Htc is 6.01 yet his HTC and my G4 both allow you to move apps on to removable storage?
I seriously think its an error on LGs behalf and they are either too arrogant or lazy or both to sort it.
They told me the Cam360 was the reason they never included 360 panoramic photos and the why we can only photo in portrait mode for panoramic shots.
My biggest complaint was how poorly it stitched inages and the inconsistency in light metering which results in heavy banding in images.
LG said by the Cam360 as the G5 is a modular and some of the features are being stripped and will require additional modular support.
Not interested in my complaint at all.

Just did the S7 method, works like a charm.

Petition for LG to allow moving app to sd (please sign this)

Hello everyone,
I started a petition for LG to allow moving apps to sd card since we have paid for the mobile, not for a confined space. it will be good if LG make it officially because not everybody can root their mobile, please sign this petition and share it with others so that we can have what we paid for.....
Its not much we are asking...IS IT?

I think it's impossible, because it's a "feature" of ics that we can't move apps to sd. Only phones which had older system can it. Every new phone with android don't have app2sd. But I will sign the petition.

I'm pretty sure most phones with an OS after froyo has Apps 2 SD. That is why you see any app that doesn't include it seems to get a lot of flack on the app store.
ics has the feature of moving app 2 sd

its not impossible because, every single phone with ics supports this feature for instance take galaxy s2, it has got 16 gb of internal memory but still supports moving app 2 sd
its a locked feature by LG or they just was in hurry.
i really hate when my phone supports hd games like nfs, gta etc but i cant play them just because of low memory.
and please share it on your facebook etc and make it happen. thanks.
I use RemountSD. For me works perfectly, as does the external memory, an internal.

But it will need root! isnt it?
Actually everyone cant root their mobile because of some unrootable firmwares and downgrading method is so boring and not everyone can perform it. so this is the thing...have you signed the petition?
so many views but only a few signs...OMG....Do it ....Do it....:highfive:
The only reason I want to root this phone is its limit internal storage. And I found from information on the web that it's because most ICS phone mount internal memory to /mnt/sdcard. It prevent user to move app data to external sdcard that is usually mount to that path in early Android OS. So if you not root your phone you only have around 2GB available to use.
I hope that Google or LG come with a way to solve this issue in their next software update.
Because for now my model P768f cannot be rooted, I signed this petition.
I dont think LG will ever listen to this petition. Android phones run faster and flawlessly with internal memory as its working memory. External Memory Cards which sometimes could be too slow and buggy due to too many files, cannot be compared with RAM in any sense. The more files you store in MMC, the slower will be access time and function. With a single file change, the phone starts to rescan media files and that is time consuming. If you need phone badly for any work and if it freezes due to slow MMC you will curse yourself.
People buy phones as per their budgets and requirements. Buying first and complaining later for any missing feature is not the thing what a company will care about.
What we need the PETITION is, to be sent to LG, for JB and Unlocked bootloaders, all for JB and ICS for all phones and all L9 Variants. Everyone knows LG very well for their worst in customer support, locked bootloaders and too late updates (sometimes a year and more. like o2x).
I still wish you best of luck. Because we are from L9 community and should respect each others initiatives, I SIGNED your petition. I hope you signed the petition for unlocked bootloader and JB from LG already.

yes bro i signed the petition for the jellybean and the bootloader unlocking even i made my 14 friends sign that...you may be right regarding this matter. but there is no harm in trying...
i understand that we should not complain when we once purchased a product but locked bootloader is also something like that and LG didnt even mention of upgrading l9 to jelly bean so we all should not hope for anything.
moving apps to sd will save a lot of space and we will be able to play games.....if thats the case you told us about, how come sony, samsung etc have this feature even after having 16 gigs of storage. and i never seen s2 slowing down.
sure unlocked bootloader can be a big help...so that we can enjoy MIUI, AOKP and CM10 etc...instead of buggy LG custom software
Using the external memory to install apps and their data isn't an ics limitation, I have a tablet from Huawei running ics and Huawei made that option of using the external as internal available, the same thing with my Equiso smart TV running ics this device has a partition where you can install apps without using a micro sd card . It's LG's choice like many phone markers and the reason is what cmahendra said. This petition isn't right. It's like asking LG to change the skin they are using on Android.
Let's focus on jb and the bootloader.

LG have already released sources for most L9 varaints, also some roms already have unlocked bootloader. So my MAIN WORRY is that, WE DONT HAVE GOOD DEVS LIKE O2X who can actually work from source codes and make custom kernels and Roms from available resources

"Patience is the key to success" and no once can teach this to the people who owned Optimus 2X. We waited for long time for O2x to crack, will wait for some more time till L9 is cracked too.

SD card as internal storage?

Does anybody know if this feature is part of the phone's software? I can't seem to find the option. Kinda useless to have SD card slot if I'm limited to transferring files over.
For instance all my music is backed up via Google music and I save stuff to the phone as I go which eats up a lot of space..
And the worst part is some apps allow you to move to the SD card but it seems like all the important ones don't even have the option.
ANNOYING!

Adoptable storage isn't enabled on mm on any OEM roms including Sony that alone tells me how reliable it'll be. It can be enabled though via adb pretty easily check the Normal xa forum someone has already done it but the storage details are all messed up its just a load of random no's. Also Google it there's plenty of ways to get it working if that's what you want.

Thanks. Its hard to think that it is such a big deal to have this feature, but oh well.. There should at least be a standard 32gb rule on any Android phone at this point considering how much usable space you end up with. I'm at almost 80% with just apps downloaded.

Yep that I do agree on 32gb should be the standard now. I'm not that bad yet still got just over 4gb free. The last update on my xa ending in 73 freed up a extra gb internal memory no idea what they've deleted though.

App launch speed

OMG! Kim K posted another selfie with tons of cleavage! Rate this thread to express how quickly apps launch on the LG G6. A higher rating indicates that even the most intensive apps launch quickly and without hesitation, even if they are no longer in RAM.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Everything I've launched opens blazingly fast, and I have over 400 apps installed already. (copied a lot of my other stuff from my other phone over to it. OH, and I did it with LG Backup / LG Mobile Switch which worked much quicker than expected. Even the installations of the apps was almost instant each... well except really big apps/games, but those still took no time compared to my older phones.
Unfortunately I had to Rate one star. The basic feature of adding a 2nd google account to google apps, freezes the phone and crashes. Without Root, on a verizon locked bootloader I will be unable to fix the problem. Looks like I need to return, and consider the Pixel or purchase a MXPE.

You used Lg Backup and Switch to copy apps because you already had an Lg phone or does it work with other brands?
I copied from my LG-G2 to my LG-G5 via the WiFi option. I'm not sure if it'll work with other phones, but I'd think it was LG specific.
Yeah probably.
I don't know of anything else than Titanium Backup on rooted phones to get every apps exactly like they were from a phone to another.
There is a 1-2 second lag after tapping an app icon and time to get launched
LG Bridge wouldn't work on Win 7 64x

Was going to use this LG software to backup my Sprint LG G6 phone on my computer. Software installed on computer properly. Couldn't get it to work as software wouldn't recognize USB connection. Samsung support said software only works with Win 10. Nothing on their website says anything about this restriction. Just FYI...

Apparently it's much better with the Oreo update. Older iPhones do not have this delay (although the content takes longer to load). No reason for it other than software.
I still can't get the LG Bridge software to work on my computer either, which is win7 so I believe the Win10 only thing. I think that was a stupid move by them, but I use other ways to backup so not too concerned.
Android 8.0 is an amazing update. I already loved my phone for what it is but with this update, I gained over 3GB of space back on my internal storage (i guess it removed clutter and uses a smaller framework) and all of the new options seem to allow much more control than before.
I was going to jump to the LG-G7, but being that I already bought 2 of the 10,000 maH extended batteries for this one that serve me well, I don't think I'm going to change anytime soon. I have a backup phone (bought 2 LG-G6) so I am just going to use the LG Backup thing and copy everything to my other phone. if anything happens I can just start that one and have an almost exact duplicate, minus any updates i've done and whatever was on the SD card which i'm sure is just booty shaking videos, dot pixel porn, photos, music, and random stuff I probably shouldnt be wasting space on anyway.

Is this relevant to app launch speed?
Just did a factory reset, a long time after installing the Oreo update which gave me a few other issues...
Apps load up without a single hesitation now! It's fantastic.
I finally bit the bullet and did this too, and there is an improvement in the opening apps lag. Let's hope it holds up over time.

BRF8 new SIM tray check - can't use my 2 SIM and microSD as before

EDIT: added samsung member official forum post:
https://community.samsungmembers.com/en_AE#/post?postId=338519&categoryId=491&page=1
I own a S9+ (SM-G965F) DUO.
Although Samsung chose to pretend that there is not enough space to accommodate 2 nano SIM card and a microSD, easy workaround exists:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/TF-Hybrid-Sim-Slot-Dual-SIM-Card-Adapter-Micro-SD-Extender-Android-Phone-HQ/152886554077?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
It is a very simple thin layer wires to connect the nano SIM externally.
I used this solution perfectly with 1 nano SIM in the tray 1, 1 microSD 128go in the SD tray + the thin layer SIM adapter and my 2nd nano sim in the external tray.
Since BRF8 update, upon boot, there is a message on white background, over all the rest of the launcher and lockscreen, preventing me from doing anything which said basically "There seems to be an unusual object in your SIM tray, please verify". There is no button to tap, no way to bring notification bar, no way to get past it with home, back or recent button.
This is freaking stupid and I don't even understand why BRF8 included this stupid check: I tried all arrangements and the conclusion is that BRF8 detects when there is both 2 SIM and a microSD and then plainly refuse to to anything despite EVERYTHING working perfectly (I can still see both SIM signal and the micro SD perfectly).
So I really need some advice on how to get passed this stupid overlay... A few ideas:
- disable a system app/package with adhell3: sim toolkit ? dual sim config ? but risk is malfunctioning sim cards...
- use another launcher which can bypass samsung home screen / overlay ? or use another theme ?
- get passed the overlay message with a combination of button ?
- remove the overlay message somehow with adb command ?
- find a way to hide the SD mount to prevent triggering the message ?
The issue is that I want to stay on stock with locked bootloader since I don't want to trip knox...
Thanks in advance for any contribution.

Very pissed since this stupid message doesn't bring anything safety improvement, it's juste blocking a perfectly working feature for no reason !!!
Still planning to test disabling some apps with adhell3 to see behavior, as well as going through some logcat.
I'm still trying to work out why on earth anyone needs dual SIMs. Having said that, just because a thing exists doesn't mean its good or that it works well, either that or you could have a faulty one.
i have the same problem..i was using the phone with 2 sims and a 256gb samsung evo sd.
i think it's time to say bye bye to s9 + and look for a phone with larger capacity. 64gb is nothing

Having a dual SIM phone is very important for anyone who wants the same phone for business/personal stuff or for anyone who travels a lot (and doesnt want crazy roaming taxes). Also SD is useful if you want all your stuff in your phone and not your laptop etc

I would probably have to drop my second sim card....
OP6 seems like an OK option but no VoWiFi (which is important in my area) and no IP rating (I'm clumsy so.....)
Also I had bad experience with thier customer support with my OP3, so it's a no-no from me

I'm an expatriate and needs my home sim card + my local sim card. Plain and simple.
Please note that this was working perfectly prior to BRF8, they just added a check to prevent the use of 2 sim + a microSD although the phone totally handles it...
I'm also facing the same problem.
Same problem here, any solution?
Well, write to Samsung support. Every single one of you. Threaten to give it back, since it was working fine before and is not anymore. Only one way to get this handled - have Samsung revert the change, I think. Wishful thinking, I know, but what else can you do (especially wothout root)? If disabling packages does not help...

I'm an expatriate and needs my home sim card + my local sim card. Plain and simple.
Please note that this was working perfectly prior to BRF8, they just added a check to prevent the use of 2 sim + a microSD although the phone totally handles it...

Ah OK. I notice that you put S9+ DUO in your first post is that significant? Its not something I've heard of unless it related to a dual sim model, in which case they shouldnt have blocked anything.

I'm still trying to work out why on earth anyone needs dual SIMs. Having said that, just because a thing exists doesn't mean its good or that it works well, either that or you could have a faulty one.

Of course it's significant: it's the variant that supports 2 SIM cards.
Yes, they shouldn't have blocked anything. And it's without notice or any information in the changelog (which is already a joke as the famous "optimized performance and bug fixes" on google play store).
I opened a topic on samsung members + asked a direct question/bug report to support.

Would be good as suggested to inform Samsung directly although I don't really have hopes...

mine has the same issue. I have already created a thread in here about that, and I received as a suggestion to reflash the kdz, but I'm still waiting for the oreo kdz to be released to try this out. you can give a shot doing that

What's the kdz? Also, I'm only at 7.0; I think Oreo is 8.0.
I wqs reading a thread with a similar issue and it was suggested to wipe the active cache partition. I haven't tried this yet, have you? Do you know if that'll wipe out all my storage? It's a whole process...shutdown, reboot holding Power + Volume Up and then following screen instructions.

I've already tried lots of things, and unfortunately none of them worked for be. Basically I tried wiping the internal storage, wiping the system and then reflashing the rom I was using, and I also tried reflashing the stock android. Nothing changed.
btw, kdz is basically the file that carries the system that is going to be installed in your phone. some versions of g5 already got the 8.0 oreo kdz, and some still on 7.0 nougat, reflashing the same 7.0 kdz could be a relevant try, but I'm not sure.
and also, wiping the cache won't change anything for you. wiping it will basically erase all temporary data created by the apps and system im your phone.

What has your experience been like with this SIM issue? Did it start off like I described mine? At first just once in a while, then once a day, then twice a day, but fixable by just releasing the battery and snapping it right back in. That's where I'm at now; twice a day. Although it didn't happen today...ever since I opened the tray, readjusted the card and blew into it.
I'm just curious if it always starts slow and progressively gets worse. Did u already mention how bad u have it? Like the frequency of the "SIM Card Removed" error and what u need to do for a temp fix? And if it snuck up on ya or has been the same since it began.
It sounds like reinstalling the kdz will wipe out my storage, ya? Just the internal or SD card as well? I haven't tried the LG Backup App that came with the phone. Is there a particular backup App that I should check out, or is the LG on good enough? I have a ton of voice recorder mp3's and Quick Memo+ files that I manually backup regularly...just by connecting the phone to my laptop and dragging files onto it.
I've been thinking about buying a compact phone for a while; maybe now is the right time. The only decent one I've found besides the iPhone, which I'm not a fan, is the Sony Xperia XZ1. The screen is 4.6" and the phone itself is 5". They're way expensive tho, close to $400, which is practically double my budget. I may be mistaken, but I recall the XZ2 being cheaper than the XZ1. I haven't look into a planned release date for the XZ3, which one might assume would make the XZ1 cheaper.
I want something that is atleast on par w/ the G5's specs, as well as audio quality. Besides some light internet use (I don't use social media), I mainly use the phone for music, both headphones and speaker, and calls/texts. I don't care about the camera specs, fingerprint and facial scanners (I don't even lock my phone with the keypad lock). I just want a phone that doesn't lag, sounds good (quality, as well as, dB of loudspeaker; I think the XZ1 might have stereo speakers), enough internal storage for Apps and a SD slot.

yes, my issue is just like yours, but I always temp fixed it by restarting the phone, never having to take off the battery, and also yes, mine seems to get worse as time passes by, in the beginning a restart used to fix the issue for more than a day or even two. by now a restart just fix it for like minutes, no matter how many times I restart it, so this is turning into a huge thing for me.
flashing the kdz will probably wipe out your internal storage. I never used backup applications like LG Backup, I basically use Google photos for media backup and the built-in android backup that downloads all your apps with your data when I put your google account in a cleaned phone.
I totally understand your point by wanting to buy another phone, but I hugely wouldn't recommend you to buy a xperia. any fix for this phone can be very expensive, and they don't use to be easy to fix, G5 do though. by this pricing range I definitely recommend you to buy an oneplus phone or especially a xiaomi phone. with aroung $350 you can get a poco f1 from AliExpress. it's an awesome phone, and it has a huge community, you'll be able to find any kind of roms for it in xda and lots of tips by its happy users. it sports a snapdragon 845 and 6gb of ram, which is basically the hardware present on this year's flagships.

Lame. So it seems like this problem will just continue to spiral out of control. What do you mean by an expensive fix for the Xperia? Is there something that commonly breaks on these, or are they known to be unreliable? Are any of the phone's u mentioned compact? I looked at One Plus phones when I was buying this G5 and remember them being gigantic. The G5 is a bit too big for my liking, but it blew away every other phone in it's price range.
Also, the $350-400 price range is the reason I don't already have the XZ1. Both me and my wallet would prefer something closer to the G5 price. 6 GB of RAM seems a bit unessacary for what I use my phones for...I forgot to mention that I don't play games either. The G5 has worked flawlessly for me, and it has 4 GB, right? I was thinking that I might be able to get away with 3 GB, tho I'm hesitant to go that route. My last couple phones before the G5 had 2 GB, and they were a bit laggy. I'm not sure how much is due to processing speed, RAM, or both.

yeah I know 6gb can be more than the necessary, but the extra gigabytes comes just as bonus for the phone's price. $300-$350!!! it's so cheap. and as this phone has that borderless design, it's not a big phone, probably almost the same size of G5 or something like. I think this phone is a total worth, especially when someone's just looking for a mid-range phone and gets a flagship. I would recommend you to search about it. but if you're really looking for a mid-range phone, you could take a look at Mi8 SE, which sports a snapdragon 710 and has a good pricing range.
