BRF8 new SIM tray check - can't use my 2 SIM and microSD as before - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

EDIT: added samsung member official forum post:
https://community.samsungmembers.com/en_AE#/post?postId=338519&categoryId=491&page=1
I own a S9+ (SM-G965F) DUO.
Although Samsung chose to pretend that there is not enough space to accommodate 2 nano SIM card and a microSD, easy workaround exists:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/TF-Hybrid-Sim-Slot-Dual-SIM-Card-Adapter-Micro-SD-Extender-Android-Phone-HQ/152886554077?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
It is a very simple thin layer wires to connect the nano SIM externally.
I used this solution perfectly with 1 nano SIM in the tray 1, 1 microSD 128go in the SD tray + the thin layer SIM adapter and my 2nd nano sim in the external tray.
Since BRF8 update, upon boot, there is a message on white background, over all the rest of the launcher and lockscreen, preventing me from doing anything which said basically "There seems to be an unusual object in your SIM tray, please verify". There is no button to tap, no way to bring notification bar, no way to get past it with home, back or recent button.
This is freaking stupid and I don't even understand why BRF8 included this stupid check: I tried all arrangements and the conclusion is that BRF8 detects when there is both 2 SIM and a microSD and then plainly refuse to to anything despite EVERYTHING working perfectly (I can still see both SIM signal and the micro SD perfectly).
So I really need some advice on how to get passed this stupid overlay... A few ideas:
- disable a system app/package with adhell3: sim toolkit ? dual sim config ? but risk is malfunctioning sim cards...
- use another launcher which can bypass samsung home screen / overlay ? or use another theme ?
- get passed the overlay message with a combination of button ?
- remove the overlay message somehow with adb command ?
- find a way to hide the SD mount to prevent triggering the message ?
The issue is that I want to stay on stock with locked bootloader since I don't want to trip knox...
Thanks in advance for any contribution.

Very pissed since this stupid message doesn't bring anything safety improvement, it's juste blocking a perfectly working feature for no reason !!!
Still planning to test disabling some apps with adhell3 to see behavior, as well as going through some logcat.

I'm still trying to work out why on earth anyone needs dual SIMs. Having said that, just because a thing exists doesn't mean its good or that it works well, either that or you could have a faulty one.

i have the same problem..i was using the phone with 2 sims and a 256gb samsung evo sd.
i think it's time to say bye bye to s9 + and look for a phone with larger capacity. 64gb is nothing

Having a dual SIM phone is very important for anyone who wants the same phone for business/personal stuff or for anyone who travels a lot (and doesnt want crazy roaming taxes). Also SD is useful if you want all your stuff in your phone and not your laptop etc

I would probably have to drop my second sim card....
OP6 seems like an OK option but no VoWiFi (which is important in my area) and no IP rating (I'm clumsy so.....)
Also I had bad experience with thier customer support with my OP3, so it's a no-no from me

downgrading works as usual but is not an option

then what should we do i brought the s9 plus 64 gb that i can use memory card & 2 sim card if that doesnt work then the phone is not worth as i am in sales having two number is very imp for me....

I'm an expatriate and needs my home sim card + my local sim card. Plain and simple.
Please note that this was working perfectly prior to BRF8, they just added a check to prevent the use of 2 sim + a microSD although the phone totally handles it...

I'm also facing the same problem.

Same problem here, any solution?

Well, write to Samsung support. Every single one of you. Threaten to give it back, since it was working fine before and is not anymore. Only one way to get this handled - have Samsung revert the change, I think. Wishful thinking, I know, but what else can you do (especially wothout root)? If disabling packages does not help...

Ah OK. I notice that you put S9+ DUO in your first post is that significant? Its not something I've heard of unless it related to a dual sim model, in which case they shouldnt have blocked anything.

Of course it's significant: it's the variant that supports 2 SIM cards.
Yes, they shouldn't have blocked anything. And it's without notice or any information in the changelog (which is already a joke as the famous "optimized performance and bug fixes" on google play store).
I opened a topic on samsung members + asked a direct question/bug report to support.

Would be good as suggested to inform Samsung directly although I don't really have hopes...

Are we SURE there is no micro SD card slot???

Are we sure there is no micro SD card slot on the tab 10? Has anyone taken apart the unit? There is a micro SD slot on the 3G version, maybe samsung has left the actual slot on the system board but just covered up the opening on the plastic shell? This happens all the time in manufacturing devices, often Mfrs want to remove a feature and dont want to re-tool or reprogram a Mfr process so they do things like leaving the option in and just covering it up.....Ive seen this happen all the time.
The fact that the tab 10 was SUPPOSED to come with a micro SD card slot and at the last minute having it left out leads me to GREATLY believe that the actual slot is on the system board just covered up by the plastic shell.
The slot is supposed to be just to the right of the volume buttons.
I cant take my unit apart until I get the stupid 3-prong security bits to unscrew the screws near the usb connector.
Mh interesting, my rotary tool is ready

There's a greater chance of finding a tiny leprechaun who changes the orientation of the Tab when it turns, than of finding an documented secret SD slot.

You obviously have no idea that all samsung pre-production models of the tab 10 (im not talking about the 10v model) had a micro sd card slot. There are plenty of pictures online. The sd card slot is there. Or at least there will be traces on the board. IMO the actual slot is soldered on the board as it was last min choice to have the option removed.
It'd be interesting to know if there is one or not......
I haven't taken mine apart yet, and have no interest in doing it. Never the less, I would also be interested in knowing what we have going on back there. I searched for a teardown by iSuppli or similar, but did not find anything. Too bad.
I'm aware that some pre-production models had the hardware. You're making a giant leap to suggest that the hardware exists in production models when all evidence points to the contrary.
But by all means, feel free to prove me wrong. I anxiously await your pics.
It's more than possible. Look at WP7 phones.

What evidence points to the contrary??? Samsung officially will tell you there is no micro SD card slot but that does not count since its their default answer if it is or isnt inside. The fact that there is no actual cut out in the plastic shell also does not count as that is its default position regardless if the slot hardware is there or not.
Again where is this evidence to the contrary?

It seems just as likely, if not more, that the pre production unit had a slot in the case, but no functioning SD hardware behind it. Even if the hardware is there, getting it to work w/o Samsung's support could be difficult. Look how hard it's been for the zoom, while Motorola intended for it to work

I'll have it xrayed on monday. I'll give you the pictures so you can analyze them.
But doubt you'll se anything useful.
(Got xray machines at work)
maybe I'm missing something here, but what is the advantage to samsung when they actually have a microSD slot onboard 10.1 after the redesign and not to use it? I find their story believable that they had to cut it out due to size(thickness) issues. If they could squeeze in the micro SD they would not hesitate to advertise it as another advantage over the ipad2.

Advantage would be the ability to market the next product as "New and improved with expandable memory."
My professional opinion in concern to prototyping and designing, its much easier to modify and replace a plastic/aluminum enclosure than modifying a stockpile of motherboards

I have taken the liberty of messaging the user for his input on this threads subject and have requested he shed some light on this mind boggling question
I think this line right here is what's confusing people.
"micro-SD card slot for up to 32GB memory through a USB adapter (have to buy separately)"
It's possible to extend it through the USB adapter, but IMO it's much easier to use a service like dropbox or sugarsync. Save a few playlists locally with iSyncr then have the rest of your library on google music. I use sugarsync. I use it all the time. It's a great way to get files onto your device, wireless.
Where's the pictures of the pre production tab having the SD slot? And BTW it's up to the person making a claim against the norm to prove it... not the other way around, that's ridiculous.

What is the support process for getting a device fixed.

I bought an Omate TrueSmart from a backer that didn't want it anymore and looks like the SimCard slot is not working. I tried emailing [email protected] as well as reach out to a contact the original owner had but no response as of yet. Any help would be appreciated.
My model is the DEV 1gb/8gb
thank you,

Well the simcard is not being recognized but I think it's hardware since it supposed to let you take the sim card out via the "spring" motion but it just grabs it without letting me eject it. Otherwise it's fine but really useless outside of the house since I can only do wifi to use it as Bluetooth is not usable to tether to the phone to use it.
How did you put the SIM inside? Notch towards the unit, with chip face up to the screen?

followed the directions online. there is a video of the process. there is just no spring action. in that type of sim insert configuration there should be a way for it to come out when pressing. some phones i have seen that on. i guess there is nobody here from Omate to assist. i have emailed and no response.

See how his sim card pops out and has the springy action mine just goes in with no spring hence i think it's a hardware issue.

Oh ok. I didn't have a user manual included when i purchased it. I got the watch in the original cased box with the pillow and the card signed by the CEO as well as the extra battery and screws. I can provide whatever you need as far as proof but I asked the original owner and he advised me he never put a sim in it. I also notice on the lower left corner there is lite leaking from under the sapphire glass.
If I have no hope of achieving any support for the device since I am not the original "kickstarter" backer then I will just sell it since I paid more then the bought it for sure.
thanks again for your quick reply Kuronosan

In that video, the sim is never shown correctly inserted into the TrueSmart. If it springs back out any, it was not pushed in far enough to latch. When fully inserted and latched, no part of the sim chip is still visible outside the slot. To get it out, push it even further in with a tool or fingernail and it will pop out to the point where is shown in Kurt's video and then can be tweezed or scraped out.
Having the sim inserted partially like in the video might work for some TrueSmarts, but it did not for mine. Once I got past that on my watch, my T-Mobile sim started functioning immediately and continued to do so without any issues.

I am sorry yours does not work right. I had hoped I could help since I had been a little misled myself, initially,by the video you linked to.
I got no similar light leaking, though there was a report with a photo of someone else who did, on the Omate forum that is now down I think. There was some speculation that such a light leakage might indicate that individual watch was not likely even vaguely water-resistant.
My only issue on my 1/8/1900 DevEd Nov watch is that it runs at a maximum of 1gHz instead of 1.3gHz. I have resisted testing the water-resistance and have not opened the back yet. I would like it to run at full rated speed, but have not initiated a warranty claim yet because I feel like the Omate folks do not yet have the resources to respond. I suspect that a lot of the watches in the early Feb USA shipment are running at 1gHz max.

Well i followed the steps so i can take my sim card out otherwise I would not be able to use my regular phone. The matter is still the issue with the sim card not working and now the lite leakage. Why is there no response from the company that is manufacturing these devices.
If someone tells me listen you were not the original backer so we can't assist you I will forget about contacting them anymore and would just write this off as a loss. It's a shame as it's a really nice device and I spent over $250 for it so it sucks that I am at a loss.

They get hundreds of emails a day. With as small as their staff is, it's two maybe three people having to answer those emails, label and ship units as well as other duties.
As a point of comparison , when I worked as a warranty certified tech for Acer, it took 8-12hrs of sitting on hold just to get them to answer a phone call.
Question, does your SIM look like this when installed;
Orientation
Insertion

My main concern is replacing the battery so the only real challenge here is getting the visor off without cracking it... apply some heat gun magic to soften the glue? I've never cracked a screen yet *knocks on wood* so hopefully that remains a non-issue.
Well that sucks. When putting it back together, what adhesive would you use to re-attach the bottom piece and the visor?

Yeah totally. Looks like the hardware for dual SIM is still there even though the SIM card tray only has one slot... I'm sure someone's going to figure out how to use that eventually. Will probably need a modified SIM tray and some software tweaks.

Second slot was open on a leaked video from Russia before release IIRC. The ones I've seen (USA) have a plastic bar that runs through the inner "holder" part. Wonder if it's going to be as simple as cutting it or maybe they removed the "tray" that sim card actually sits in. Call to arms for someone to take some detailed tray pictures now
should it be as simple as putting "anyone's" activated SIM in the second tray, and then you've got two numbers on your phone? how does Android handle multiple SIMs? do we know? does it set up multiple profiles? i think someone should find out.

P9000 unreliable rubbish - Worst phone I've had ?

I bought this phone based on my Father in Law's
P5000 and thought after much research that they would only have improved the series... Specwise the P9000 should be great... The Sony 13 Megapixel camera should be awesome.. It gsm surprised me a few times in perfect conditions but anything indoors where you want to capture the moment my advice would be to use anther camera, another phone or do a quick sketch with your eyes closed....
The fact that the phone can't keep a SIM card or Sdcard in place is a major problem and means that you cannot rely I the phone if you want it as a means of communication. I have tried the tape solution, taking the SIM to the tray and the tray to the phone, without much success. BTW I have found a permanent workaround to the annoying "do you want to change the default write disk" error message that came up everyone I turned the phone on (you take the Sdcard out of the phone and put it in a drawer, then use the phone without the Sdcard - no more error message).
And now my home button is not working so I am forced to use the nav bar
Currently asking for an RMA for about the 4th time.
I cannot advise people more to avoid this phone and this company

I have had the phone over 6 months - was getting the sdcard issue frequently in beginning but since updated to CM13 its very rare. Fantastic cheapo phone.
A great phone IMO. The ONLY time I got the sim card message was before I moved it to the second (dedicated) sim card slot and not the dual slot (dual for either sdcard or sim). No problems at all, all on original as it came to me with OTA updates only.
From your current signature, you have messed with your ZTE Kis also.......................

Is it still worth buying this tablet?

Hello guys so my nvidia shield tablet has died. I am now considering options and wandering is it still worth getting the z4?
If you don't need more than Android 7!
Nope, the display breaks easily and it is virtually impossible to find replacement.

Are they still selling this tablet? No Sony software support. Gets shower day by day. I rooted it and installed Lineage OS which saved my day.

Can you still use Remote Play if you installed another OS? I just got one off ebay so I could do that and the wife and I can Google Duo our folks on a larger screen. I don't really need it for much more than that, but I notice it's a bit sluggish, even editing Google Photos.

I just tried installing the Remote Play from Play Store and had no problem. So, you should be fine.
The Tablet Z4 with Sony's OS is definitely slow. That's the reason why I installed the custom ROM.

Thanks. It actually connects and everything?
Also, would you happen to know the max capacity micro sd card this takes? I can't seem to find that info anywhere.

No problem with connection. About SD card - it supports up to 128gb. https://www.sonymobile.com/au/products/tablets/xperia-z4-tablet/specifications/#gref

Thanks, again. I saw some people say 256gb, but nothing official. Nothing on these forums either, besides 128gb.

I wish Sony would update this - more ram, new processor, maybe better battery life if possible. Sounds like they gave up on the tablet market which sucks.
I just want a 10.1" or greater modern tablet that is waterproof, with an unlockable boot loader and some custom rom support. Unless a great announcement comes out soon, I may be going samsung and researching waterproof cases.

I'm using a 256GB card with no problems. Running stock rom with AndroPlus kernel.

Thanks. Do you think the kernel helped with that? I'm interested in "updating" the software somehow, but AndroPlus isn't supported anymore. I'm already out of practice with rooting and all that and don't want to risk ruining a device that was already pretty hard to find.

I don't think so. It'll just work. If not, the 'rooting' process is as simple as these instructions, if you want to go with LineageOS, which is basically an open source Android ROM.
I have a 256GB sdcard as well and I'm fully stock and I have no issues. I haven't maxed out the card, however so I'm assuming that it recognizing the card means it works.
I've had mine for 1.5 years now. It is definitely showing its age on the latest games or a ton of Chrome tabs but otherwise it works fine for me.
I would love to have a new Sony tablet but it's pretty clear that they exited the market. So, probably at the end of the year I'll get a Sammy S4 or S5.

I am using a 400GB micro SD and will upgrade to 512GB in the next days.
I see no reason why the Controller should not support Cards up to 2TB(the theoretical max for Micro SDX) - if they will ever exist.
