Lol...no "more" updates? They never did them in the first place. My Moto G3 is still on like January 2016 security update and 6.0. Moto updates since being absorbed into Lenovo are horrid.

I have 4 Moto's if you count my wife's Moto E and non have ever had a monthly update that I can remember. Of course, I have 2 Samsung devices also and neither one of those has ever had an update either.

I don't think they ever said they would in the first place... People assume because Google is doing it for Nexus devices and pushing it to the AOSP source, every Android phone would get it. People don't understand how Android works.

I probably average at least one rom flash every month anyway, so I guess I do get monthly updates. There's probably nothing in the monthly updates I worry about anyway.

Android needs a better way to get updates universal instead of device dependant.

Not just device dependant either. Some phones only get updates from the carriers and that can be pathetic. Carriers are quick to mark a phone "end of life" and when that happens forget any updates. Smartphone manufacturers are also beholden to cell phone carriers, who can delay updates by months on their networks. Also, Android can be a bit of a mess since any manufacturer can make a smartphone or tablet, throw Android on it, and release it. So, the things that make Android so great are also some of the same things that hold it back in some areas.

ICS in Sprint e-mail

So did anyone else get the Sprint message about getting their Photon to run faster, which suggested clearing the browser cache? - Bigger question is did anyone else notice that the Photon in the picture was running either ICS or JB!? It was, complete with the new rounded click/weather widgets and five icons along the bottom of the screen. Now if they'd only distribute and release the source, it would make the devs jobs easier, having ICS/JB drivers.

Well [email protected]! - I read the message and at a quick gander the very subtle differences don't stand out. Of course there's no reason the think those dip-sticks would use the picture of the wrong phone. I was all excited seeing the ICS/JB OS too.
Fingers crossed that new parent Google slaps some sense into Motorola and unlocks the boot loader and releases ICS or JB soon with source code. You know the expression about the chances being slim to none, well slim is on life support I guess.

And is there anything whatsoever in your experience that would conceivably lead you to expect them to be as early as possible rather than as late as possible?
That, of course, leaves aside the question of whether there's anything in your experience that would lead you to expect them to honor this claim in the first place.
Ah ! Moto at it again. With Photon Q LTE out with JB, it is unlikely that we will now get an update to either ICS or JB, even though Google 'promised' to keep hardware refreshed for 18 months. We will most likely be extended an olive branch of $100 credit towards another 'Moto Phone' ... really Moto ?
This is my last Moto phone and likely last Android as well. I am ready to convert to Lumia 920.

Technically the 18 months is not over yet. It has only been close to 14 months since the release of the Photon 4G so Motorola could pull something out of its hat and possibly give us a JB update in early January 2013. All these hints about offering $100 for a future Moto device for any 2011 devices that don't receive the ICS upgrade is pretty telling to me.

Android 4.4 May cause issues with g2 locked bootloader.

I was doing some reading and came across this interesting article. I hope our devs can UN dm-verify our stock kernel.
It may make rooting future devices much more difficult. I wonder what bug crawled up Google's butt.

So do we get the pitchforks out and commence advance on LGs social media, etc? To get them to churn out an official build, of course.
It's a great phone and I bought it knowing they might not be quick on the draw. Didn't consider that 4.4 might make all these ROMs all for naught. Still, I needed a faster phone and this certainly fits the bill!
At same time I did know that short of a GSM Nexus that I couldn't have guarantee of latest Android.
I'm stuck on Verizon until March 2013. I can then slap a GSM Sim in, hopefully. But I paid retail so it's not like I want to buy a new phone anytime soon.
Well. I have myself to blame. Again. But I am off contract in March and this will never happen to me again!
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
I am hopeful that when 4.4 comes out our devs will be able find a way for us to upgrade from 4.2 to a custom rooted 4.4 with out any issues. I do think that even stock unrooted this phone is fantastic it is carrier iq that is killing me. I'm sure att will put it in 4.4 also. Even though it was the carriers idea LG allows it to happen so I blame them also.

LG to my knowledge locks the bootloader on all its devices regardless of carrier.
This is troubling. The reason I chose the G2 was because it was the closest thing to the Nexus 5 on Verizon and had good developer support. Hopefully our fantastic developers will figure out a solution.
From what I understand, unless we upgrade to the official 4.4 LG ROM, there is no chance of this happening. Is that correct ?
I guess I'm selling the g2 for the nexus 5

That's my take on it. It is built into the 4.4 kernel. I wonder if this had anything to do with Google buying Motorola in August. Lock the phones way down for the carriers.
Sent from my LG-D800 using XDA Premium HD app
If there will not be a 4.4 rom within 3 months guess it is a dirty shot for those who bought it and want to buy it like me
Looks like I'll be rolling with Nexus devices from now on. I guess it was bound to happen though, I'm sure OEM's wanted another security layer because of bootloader work a rounds. On the upside though, there will be less threads on device release days asking for root and ROM ETA's!
Sent from my Nexus 7
the funny thing even though android are opensource, the phones and hardware are not. Thats where improvement is. If you create an abstraction layer, where due to propriatary stuff its closed and updateable by vendor. Another layer, the OS can go on top, thusly eliminating hardware dependancy as well as increasing updatability. OS and security issues can then more easily be adressed, without the now unduable vendor involvement needed in integrating the new OS with all the hardware specifics. Given the entropy rate of new phones coming out, its undoable. This last, as wel as commercial reasons is why updates and fixes for security holes dont come fast. As of yet.
Right now we see the true devs juggling various devices as the rate of entropy in new devices is higher then more true devs coming in. Devices not even picket up by community cause there are no devs for it. The breaking point has come.
A new design must be made for this momentum, a new standard

I think people who are already rooted will be ok , they will just need to avoid the official 4.4 until a custom rom is built. The bigger problem will be for new unrooted owners. I would imagine it being tricky to flash a custom kernel without the ability to root. I also agree in time the devs will figure something out.

Like I said in the question, when do we think we get the update?
A. within a week
B. within two weeks
C. within a month

E. NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

The people on all forums about the VZW S4 are a very small number of VZW users. Almost all people will not get a new phone until their current plan is up. Therefore the S5 coming out is irrelevant to when KitKat is released. The majority of people will update to KK when it's pushed and most have never heard of it, let alone care.
VZW taking longer also means Samsung has worked out some bugs in their initial releases. Bloatware doesn't have much to do with it, IMO, most apps are tweaked to work with new software fairly quick.

This is getting annoying. 4.3 update fixed none of the issues or bugs really.... and then they make the flagship phone wait for kitkat.

VZW has been known to only care about the brand new phones. I had a HTC Droid Incredible 2 and at the time the Inc series was their flagship, but the Dinc2 was still 3g. ICS was getting put on everything and they had their lists out showing what would and wouldn't and our Dinc2's were on the confirmed list just never received nothing . VZW passed blame to HTC and of course HTC passed it right back to VZW. Then about 6 months or so later or so VZW comes out and says our old flagship isnt gettin ICS at all, stated communication errors with just that phone. Wouldnt even release source for it. Now if it was the 4g model, which was the Incredible S, we would've had ICS and source. I dont trust VZW as far as updates and they'll probably state same excuse and offer us a discounted S5 or a free upgrade to switch our plan totally and for us to pay more in about 4 months. If KK drops just be amazed if we get passed 4.4.2. this phone probably wont see 4.4.3

Followed up on your claim that any official dates have been confirmed, they haven't. Most recent information as stated by HTC is target 2nd week of April. That's not a confirmation of any specific date especially since the update is with Verizon right now to get final certification. If you have specific information from a source to say otherwise please post.

I'm sure resources could have been but at the same time Google said it was a low percentage of devices that even have that version. I'd like to say it was like 1-3% or something that low so it probably wasn't too high on the list to fix. I do think their is a patch they have out though
There's been some subtle info coming through the pipeline but week of 21st (now) is the adjusted time for target release. Hopefully some of you will get the OTA notification soon. This isn't a guarantee by any means, we all know the update process through Verizon historically has always been massively delayed at times when dealing with older devices. Its not like HTC or Verizon though to give constant updates pushing it week to week. They already did their 3 month postponement so I think its legit at this point.

Guys, a noob here. Just caught the news about KK coming over to Droid DNA. I have an unlocked version running Viper DNA 1.3.5 on Android version 4.1.1 with Sense 4.
Will I get notification of the KK update OTA since I'm in Canada and hence not running on Verizon's network and secondly, if I do the update, will I be able to run the ViperDNA as a dual boot option or is it even worthwhile to do that?
Thanks in advance folks!!!

So what do you guys think will be the next update we will get you think Samsung/Tmobile will bother updating us to the 4.4.4 ??? Or just wait it out and go str8 to Android L ?? Will be interesting to see how Android L Looks once touchwiz is on top

I'm disappointed we don't even have 4.4 yet, I don't understand how this works. Samsung devs finalize it, and send it off to carriers? And then carriers mess with it? This takes months and months?

Android is a highly fragmented OS, which is pretty annoying, luckily we can root and install our own 4.4 roms! haha

Yea any 4.4.4 rom have a bunch of important stuff broken so we do have to wait till Samsung pushes their TouchWiz update for us to be able to use 4.4.4

No, that won't help either. Even the 4.4.2 ROMs are broken. The devs are trying hard to get the drivers working, but I don't know enough about that stuff to see what exactly is holding them back.

fragmentation is the wrong word, fragmentation implies that android as an entire OS is missing major features and apps are incompatible which is simply not the case, you're thinking of segmentation which is what android is now(back in the 2.2/2.3.3 days you would be right though). With 4.0 android being released, it really blurred the lines between different Android versions and made things very modular as opposed to lets say iOS which is very monolithic, you can not get the latest safari on an older version of iOS, you can however have the latest google now, maps, ect. on a device with 4.0 without rooting and have full functionality for the most part(just missing minor things like "ok google") and unlike iOS, aps built on newer versions of android work on older versions of android unlike iOS where newer apps are incompatible with older versions of iOS
I think an update is required. I have a glitch with the back cover. The current modem is pretty awful. It even makes my phone start up longer. The device even added that T-Mobile 4G LTE screen logo too. I remember it took no time to boot up the S5. Now, it takes mine roughly 30 seconds.

Mine takes about fifteen.
Edit: timed it. You're right. 27 seconds.
