OEM skin/software - LG G6 Real Life Review

Are you comfortable in your own skin? Is your phone comfortable in its skin? Rate this thread to express how you deem the skin on the LG G6. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it adds just the right amount of features, it's visually pleasing, and overall it's additive to the experience. If this is a Nexus phone (you didn't think we hand-wrote all of these prompts, did you?) then use this rating to indicate how the latest version of Android looks to you.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

At first glance, I wasn't a fan of the LG aesthetic. Actually I prefer the non-app draw setup. I like that everything is accessible through screens. I may actually take advantage of folders this time...
The Settings area looks closer to stock. There's not a whole ton of bloat. It's much better than Samsung bloat, that's for sure. There are definitely LG features shipped with it and for the most part they are useful. For the most part, the OS doesn't fill like it is being overwhelmed by branding. The LG stuff is out of the way for most major functions.
Some of my favorite LG features...
The double tap to unlock the screen is my favorite feature by far.
"Comfort View" will be good to use for when I'm not able to sleep and am reading articles. It basically is like the f.lux app for PC. It removes blue light (makes color temperature much warmer) and this is highly customizable. So if you are already staring at screens all the time and just need something more pleasant on the eyes, you can turn this on and off easily in the notification menu.

I've never used the LG skin before and I'm happy to say it's alright. I wish it used the new Nougat style compact settings menu but unfortunately it's as cluttered as previous generation phones.
The biggest issue I have is the theme support. ALL of the downloadable skins are horrible. There are absolutely no modern or stylish skins. They all are the kind of skins you would install on a kid's phone.
The only usable skins are the default ones (default, platinum, black, white). Even they are annoying because all but the default one put your app icons inside ugly black boxes that make it harder to differentiate the icons.
Other issue is the "app scaling button" that appears in the notification drawer and stands on top of your keyboard if you try to use quick reply.
Other than that the skin and software are great and I've been very happy with the experience!

Never been a fan of ANY custom (OEM) skin.
True, there are not a lot of themes, but I think that's an issue with the 18:9 aspect ratio too.
So, hating the LG interface, I just bought Pixel UX theme on play store : so far so good.
I used only cyanogenmod / lineageos on my LG G2/G3/G4, so could't keep the stock LG theme on my new LG G6.

Some Gripes
I just received my new LG G6 today, and I've been testing things all day.
So far I found 2 issues:
1. No flashlight widget or application. You can only access the flashlight through the notifications bar but it's a 2 step process. You have to slide down the notifications bar then open the drop down to get to the flashlight. Ideally, a flashlight should be easily accessible. Most times people use a flashlight is when they really need it or in an emergency - spur of the moment circumstances. It would be convenient to have this on the home screen or at least have the option.
I read some articles saying that there is a "torch" or flashlight widget but there is none to be found. I have no idea what these people are talking about. They right 2 pages about the LG G6 torch widget... I'm guessing they don't even own a G6? And, they assumed it was just like its predecessor?
2. Shortcut icons on the lock screen. I have no idea why there are even settings for this or why this is even a feature. First of all, you cannot access the lock screen shortcuts because of fingerprint security or password lock security. Once you unlock your screen, you will enter the home screen rendering the lock screen shortcuts useless. I wanted to remove all of the shortcuts but 2 of them are stuck there and cannot be removed.
These 2 very simple things annoy the hell out of me.

For the Torch light, drag down the notifications tray and you can add "Flashlight".
Also from the Play Store, download "Key Plus for LG" you can modify key down or key up buttons, normally double press key down would access to the camera, so you can modify key up to "Toggle Flashlight" It works when the screen is off.

Welcome to android!

Great other than the ugly stretch effect when swiping on last or first screen. Also, on my G6 if I choose app drawer, I can only have UI4.0.

look is shiny. feels sturdy.
glass isn't the right material for the back of a phone.
If only they made plastic/carbon back..

Software is... ok, but I can't help feeling that more people would be pleased if it looked a lot more like stock android, similar to HTC. Could be a hell of a lot smoother considering it has the same processor as the pixel, just higher clocked.

I reuploaded it, now there shouldnt be Scroll Bars Anymore
Just so I'm clear, what kind of help are you asking for at this stage? I can help test the product but I haven't done any mobile development.
If you haven't done developement just Keep trying it and report bugs! If you have special wishes or ideas for the GUI you are welcome
Im just programming the Launcher Part
All I'm after is an app that uses motion for unlocking. In the purest form it can be like the iPhone unlocker where there's a bar to slide but, unlike S2SU, the bar should be positionable and it shouldn't write over anything else on the screen. That means if you have something like SpB Mobile Shell, when your phone is locked it shows the Now screen. I would want to see the Now screen still. Here's a mockup:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_download": "Download",

}
More advanced features can be things like custom-defined motions for unlocking including no visual hints which in effect will function like a password. As for functionality outside of unlocking...it doesn't really interest me because so many other applications already do that. Is there something you need tested now? When I ran it, it didn't seem like it was at that stage yet.

IMHO, "Invisible Lock Screen" and "Gesture to Unlock" are 2 distinct challenges. I agree it would be cool to combine the 2. But you may need to prioritize those 2 efforts.
My personal opinion would be to implement a small, very efficient gesture recognition module that generates an event based on the a successful gesture match. It would be like "Gesture 2 Action". Then others like A_C could perhaps integrate or make it an option for S2U2. With G2A, then again, it could be used to do anything - launch an app, set an alarm, disable bluetooth, etc...
The invisible lock screen would be nice also, but I think it presents entirely different challenges.
I will reupload Preview B in some minutes, there you will be able to Launch programs by Gestures
You can configurate it in a text file
Scilor, aren't there already apps that launch programs via gesture? Touch Commander is one. I'm sure there are more. What are your development priorities?

I guess what I'm after is what's not available now. To start, a very simple low-impact unlock slider that doesn't override the visible screen, and to finish a custom-motion unlocker with option to hide the visible hint i.e. slider track.

That's true. If the primary purpose of this new app will be to one-up Touch Commander with complex gestures, I guess that would be something new.
I just Uploaded the new Version!
now you can launch programs with it (configuratible in the gestures.cfg)
interesting app, works on my touch. Thanks!
I just uploaded a new Version Alpha 0.0.1
I little improved the gesture recognition and made it a littel bit Skinnable
Iam Primary working on a Launcher, because i dont' know how to block buttons, if iam able to do this, i will implent the Locking function
interesting project but in future it should be possible to make gestures in any app!

The default password is the top left dot (just click on it). Once you have setted your own pattern (you can do that by tap&hold and then select change pattern) it's stored on a file called lockcode.txt in the app folder.
Ohhh! Looks amazing, installing ASAP !
EDIT: First thoughts:
WOW! This app is amazing, especially for the first beta. Honestly, I'd use this as is with no changes. I think I'm going to skin it later this weekend to see how it looks. Therer were a few things I noticed however.
If you enter the wrong pattern, "again" is spelled "aggain".
The load time took about 5-6 seconds on my touch.
That was really all that I noticed with it. Works very smooth and and I really like the transparent affect on it!
Just a few suggestions:
Please keep it simple like it is, too much extra will just slow it down.
The option to overlap existing lines in the pattern would give some extra security.
Making it full screen with an extra row of dots.
Sorry to sound like a pain, but I really like this development and would like to see this grow a lot.
Again, excellent work, keep it up !
Omgawd. Alfonso. I love you. You always come out with the things i need at exactly the right time I was looking for something like the iPhone S2U. I know A_C almost perfected it, but i really wanted a passcode thing. I'm going to double lock my phone now, Throttle Lock under my S2U2.
i think maybe it would be faster if the background was all black. i think transparency slows it down...
anyways, this is amazing.
EDIT: nevermind black background looks ugly.
WOW. Dude, you've done it again, this is ground breaking stuff.
I can;t fault it apart from the slow loading times. It's awesome
Also, is there anyway you can allow diagonals from one to the other? If you see what I mean?
Nice work!
Thanks, coooooool app. T M Z
Hi,
It looks awesome! Can anyone report on the effect on battery life?
Battery Life: ive only been using for about an hour and nothing bad. plus it only opens when you wake up your deivce so its not ALWAYS running.
I'm skinning it as we speak!
Very nice work APBilbo. Thank You. I have been looking for something like this for a while now. S2U2 is just to overloaded for my liking. It didn't seem to work right at first after I set the pattern, so I soft reset and now it works flawless on my Sprint Touch stock 6.1 ROM. Again Thank You, BOO
One Word... "Fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Loving it.. lookin forward to the creativity to continue..
Bien Hecho!
I've been looking for an Android lock app ever since i saw the video preview of googles android OS.. what ive been looking for
great work!
Are you planning on adding features like S2U2? I asked A_C to add the patter feature to his unlock and he would not so I'm hoping you add the features he has so we can all have the best of everything.
Having an option to make the pattern "pads" invisible would allow the features from S2U2 can be added onscreen
so i made a "skin" for this.

Thank's everybody for the feedback!!
As i fas as I see there's no problems other than the speed thing... I'll try to speed it up a little bit. I can't promiss anything though.
About where will the throttle development go I don't plan to make it very complex. May be in the future I'll add:
- Full screen support.
- Some icon notifications for missed calls, new sms, new mail.
Understand that this is mostly a locking app to secure your device. Any info given on it will be public, so it will not show anything like next appointment, last called id, etc.... Though you're able to receive calls while the device is locked.
Thanks!!!

[Q] Things that suck about the Galaxy S II - Help me resolve

I love my SGSII, but some things just plain suck though. Does anyone know of solutions to the following:
Bluetooth
Poor A2DP quality (low bitpool)
Gets hot and battery drain after turning the car stereo off.
Often doesn't respond to forward/back controls.
Lockscreen
I'd much rather just have the stock Google lockscreen. Anyone know how to restore this?
Call answer slider
These are ugly and not very smoothly animated. Anyone know a way to replace these with stock or otherwise?
Apps missing from Market on KE7
I've noticed a few of these. It finds Samsung-specific apps instead.
Swipe to dismiss notifications
I guess this is just a useful cyanogen feature that I miss.
No silent state
I want 'ring and vibrate', 'vibrate only' and 'totally silent' ring modes on volume button like Cyanogen, or in the notification drop down. As it is, I only have everything or vibrate only. It's very annoying having to go into the menus or use an ugly widget.
Change what double-tapping the home button does
Currently goes to Vlingo, which is awful. It could do something useful
The UI still has loads of poor design elements left over from the SGS
Most notably, words that don't fit in boxes and fall onto 2 lines as below (regardless of font used)
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Also, loading bars often overlap other text and elements. It looks sloppy. Why do Samsung think this is an improvement over stock?
The Gallery app has two menus to send things
Ways to share pictures is now split between 'send via' and 'share via'. This is completely unnecessary. Why would Samsung do this? Can I install the stock gallery app?

I use widgetlocker to bypass the stock lockscreen. There is a setting in widgetlocker which allows you to bypass your stock lockscreen so when you "slide to unlock" it goes straight to your homescreen. Plus you can add widgets, etc. which is a very nice feature.
coming from the iPhone (though liking the GS2 very much) I find it annoying how incosistent the UI is.
To share a picture from the browser is a completely different action than sharing something from the gallery...
I've got a higher bitpool lib uploaded... Wanna try it?

wow is that bad, i never knew these types of things existed. i just thought it was identical to AOSP code based ROMs. samsung should really feel silly for UI issues like that. particularly because they are stock elements gone awry allegedly due to samsung's custom skin of the device. they broke stock!
Yes it's very sloppy. All of these were present on the first Galaxy S. Either fix thhem, or put it back to stock!
More issues:
Setting to 'power saver mode' disables sync. Returning to normal mode doesn't re-enable it.
How the feel do I snooze the alarm?
Network data stops working, with the upload arrow stuck on but no download.
You can set the snooze settings under advanced settings when you create or edit an alarm. Tab on snooze and set the snooze timeout and the number of times you are allowed to snooze.

Well, the battery draining in less then half a day is not properly a minor inconvenience, given that it's a mobile device. IMHO.
Even the sound quality over bluetooth is a major letdown for me, to be true. I am coming from an Iphone4 whose BT sound quality was great and I'm pretty disappointed.

Question Issues with touchscreen accuracy?

Since I got my phone, I've noticed I often need to tap multiple times on the screen to "click" on what I want to open/activate. I never experienced something similar in the past with other devices.
At first, I thought it was a matter of screen sensitivity, but now I think it's more about the way the OS is registering taps.
See the following video: https://streamable.com/awblmr
There are two things:
If you click slightly above or on the side of an icon in the launcher, the app won't open. However, if you tap significantly below, it works fine (I prefer the latter behavior personally).
In chrome/bromite, if you swipe at the limit in between the tab icon and the status bar, it will both show tabs and pull the notifications.
Has anyone experienced this very irritating behavior? I mostly notice it when I want to do open apps, use the navigation bar, or type on the keyboard. It seems like it's a software "issue", so hopefully Google improves this.
I, too, am experiencing similar issues. I was chalking it up to the change from OP6t to the P6 until your post.

Good to know I'm not alone in this. I'm about to get a second unit, so I will do similar testing.
You are not alone. Same problem here with two Pixel 6 (mine and my wife's).
Just received my new unit, I have all the same display issues:
It feels cheap, especially in the middle:
https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1453025239537967105
Same rainbow effect when I tilt the phone
Same weird "touchscreen accuracy" as described here
Getting the unregistering taps on app icons. And also some lower app icon taps will open the app drawer. Both intermittently.

I've actually not seen this behavior. I do notice that the text below the icon seems to be part of the actual icon and if you click anywhere near that it will open the app. Other than that not really but I've only had it for a day or so. I have found that keeping my fingers moisturized eliminates errant touches and FP issues. Great for my skin but now I have to carry a little tube of Eucerine around.
I, too, was thinking it was just the slightly different keyboard position I still had to get used to...
I'm consistently having issues opening the emoji keyboard within Signal. I often have to repeatedly press the emoji button for the list to show up...

Same problems, especially on small items (like ships in Starfleet Command)
Definitely having this issue. With or without increased sensitivity. No screen protector.
Definitely experiencing touch accuracy issues in many places (pixel launcher, keyboard, quick settings, individual apps, settings, etc basically everywhere) I'd like to believe (hope) it's totally addressable in a software fix
I'm pretty sure the cause of this issue for me is that the phone is so big and heavy. It's hard for me to accurately touch the screen when my hand is struggling to hold the phone up.
This is part of why I hate the Pixel Launcher's "swipe up to open app drawer" gesture. It results in so many false positives when I'm just trying to click an icon, but the phone slips a bit and it gets registered as a swipe instead.
i too

[Lock Screen Magazine]
I will have a different beautiful image to look at every time I need to unlock my phone. For me, it’s like having a surprise. Also, I can access some news and information related to the image and I don’t need to unlock the phone to access it. If I want to, I can add my own photos to the carousel wallpapers.[Always on Display]
It is interesting that I can add text and image to it. I can put a reminder for other people not to touch or play with my phone
[Google Lens in Camera and Photo Gallery]
Another awesome feature embedded in phone’s camera and photo gallery. As we know, we use google lens to find information on something from an image. Usually, I will need to access the Lens app and work from there. But this time, the Lens icon has already inside the camera and photo gallery. So, I just view the photo from the gallery and press Lens icon, VOILA! The information related to the photo is there. Efficient! Love this!

In terms of productivity, these are really helpful :
[Multi-screen connect]
It provides seamless connectivity between my laptop and phone, no more cables needed. Moving my files is as easy as select, drag and drop. I can control my phone from my laptop too.
Since Reno8 5G doesn’t have an SD card slot, at certain period, I will need to move some of my files from phone to laptop.
(in Windows 10, drag and drop might not work, so after files are selected from the phone, click send and choose multi-screen connect)
[One-handed mode]
There are instances that I have one hand occupied. And, at the same time, I need to respond to urgent text or access other function. This feature comes very handy to that situation.[Flexible windows – mini mode]
This is useful when I need to work on two apps at the same time[Raise to wake]
I just raise my phone and it automatically brings me to the lock screen. No double tap or pressing side button.[Partial Screenshot]
Before this, I need to crop the full screenshot image if I want to use partial of it. With this feature, I can skip one step. Effective!
I am glad to know that OPPO goes beyond to provide security and protect the privacy of smartphone user. Enable these features are a must!
[Pseudo base station blocking]
In Singapore, we have DNC (Do Not Call) service to block incoming calls and SMSs from tele-marketer, but it does not always work for fraudulent calls/SMSs from scammers. This feature will provide a shield by intercepting messages/calls from counterfeit numbers used by criminals. It is important for me to enable this feature because I am so tired receiving spam calls and messages.[Require password to power off]
This feature is very straightforward. If my phone gets stolen, I still have time to locate it[Privacy Dashboard]
This is like a compilation of which app use what function related to permission given to the apps.
Sometimes I do random a check for location and camera.
I don’t want to see any app with no permission using these two functions.
If I want to change permission for certain app, it can be done from here as well.
Cool features that I am not using (for now) but it’s worth mentioning because they are so awesome and might be useful for me one day.
[Smart notification hiding]
If you feel annoyed by your close one who likes to peep/check your phone when there’s notifications, this feature will save you. If the front camera detects someone other than phone owner is looking at the phone, the content of notification will be hidden. How cool is that?[System cloner]
System cloner will create a separate system for certain app and a separate password is needed to access it. It’s like having 2 rooms with 2 keys in 1 place. I like to have this option, it might be useful for me one day.[Retouch appearance in video calls]
I was intrigued when I found this in settings. When using video call, of course I want to be in my best look. And the Reno8 5G has a setting for that. Currently, it’s only working for Facebook Messenger. Hopefully, it will be extended to other apps, e.g. Zoom, WhatsApp, Instagram.
[Air Gestures]
This is actually a very awesome concept since scrolling through social media has been a part of daily activity. Scrolling without even touching the screen, that is what Air Gestures about. Front camera will detect your palm and flick your palm up or down to scroll.
Air Gestures experience has not been smooth for me. Sometimes the palm motion is not detected so I need to put it at a little odd angle for the camera to detect.
As I said before, this is a very awesome concept, but improvement is needed.
