Clarity/resolution - Essential Phone Real Life Review

The Essential Phone has a crazy crisp display. Just kidding, this is automated text so who knows if this screen is any good. So, you be the judge! A higher rating indicates that it's extremely sharp and clear, and that you cannot see pixels with your naked eye.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Very clean and clear display brought new life to wallpapers

Mine looks great. With a high quality wallpaper (shout out to Backdrops) the device really shines. I was worried about it being LCD rather than AMOLED, however after using it for three weeks now, I still prefer the PH-1's display over my old Nexus 6's display. I've had other people comment on how crisp and beautiful the colors look, even iPhone users who gawk when I tell them the pixel density is greater than any iDevice released (and even not released yet!) I love my PH-1.

have to agree and add that i actually tried a live wallpaper and actually am still using it BECAUSE its so sharp. I NEVER use live wallpapers tried this one for giggles https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maxelus.livewallpaper.amoled&hl=en and the PH-1 sold me. Just seems different somehow

Honestly? Display is good but not great. I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to this. Used to Samsung Super AMOLED screens, so any LCD just feels like a downgrade. My wife likes it better though because you can actually turn the screen brightness lower if you're lying in bed reading a book.

I am having trouble picking a wallpaper for this phone. Even my Nexus 6 made these pictures pop better than this phone. Might be a software issue though. When watching videos, it doesn't look that bad. I mean you will only get so much out of an LCD screen. This isn't really anything special.

I found that somehow I like the dark wallpapers better on this screen than the amoled on my z2 force which supposedly has better blacks.

If you like grey yeah. But I have 3 Essentials (only one I am keeping) and they all have imperfections around the edges of the screen, so with that picture you have the top left might not look perfect, and even then it would look grey rather than black. Not having this issue with the Razer Phone, but the screen isn't as bright as the Essential so who knows. Didn't really have an issue with the Moto Z2 Force either, but I can tell that its a plastic oled rather than a glass one

Clock is command center, it's what us moto mod users used to see the battery of our moto mods but it works for this phone. The clock is just part of stock Android Pie. I'm using Nova launcher beta (just Google it) and luver icon pack. Here's the wallpaper too. Just something out of my Google plus community

Screen Colors Off?

Does anyone eleses yellows and Greens look off esp the yellows they seem to be very dull and off and almost orange
I agree, the market icon look Olive-colored on Atrix 4G
A lot of you were looking at the oversaturated SAMOLED screens for a long time... this is way more natural.
No qhd is just not as good as super amloed its facts.

Qhd is not a screen technology, its a resolution.
And the problem with the colors isn't that they're dull or unsaturated compared to a super amoled., that's to be expexted. The problem is that the colors are just wrong compared to just about any screen you want to compare it too, load up some websites on the phone and a well calibrated desktop monitor and you'll easily see the difference.
Compared to my captivate im really happy. That thing made skin tones green or orange.
It has to be reiterated. The oled display technology OVERsaturates the colors. As in, the colors are overly vibrant. The atrix will more accurately display colors.
Ok, saying this again. We (at least I) am not saying this in comparison to a samoled screen, the colors on a regular LCD will obviously never look like that, the colors on the amoled are completely wrong. However that doesn't mean the atrix has them right, just look at the screen compared to a well calibrated computer monitor.

Bumping this to get some attention on this issue.
I'm considering returning my Atrix because of how bad yellows and blues look, compared to OTHER LCDs, not compared to Super AMOLED screens.
I lined up my Captivate, Atrix, iPod Touch 4, and my wife's HTC Evo Shift and fired up Words with Friends on all of them. While it's clear that the Captivate is oversaturated, if you take that out of the equation, the Atrix's colors just look bad compared to the other two LCDs. The yellow tiles look "dirty" like they have a brown or greenish tint to them. The light blues in the tabs on the home screen of Words with Friends look like they have a greenish tint as well.
I've seen a lot of people say that they think it's one of the greatest displays ever, up there on par with the iPhone 4. If that's true, I really hope mine and other people seeing this just have defective models that can be exchanged.
I'm going into my AT&T store sometime tonight or tomorrow in hopes of putting two or more Atrices side by side to compare.
If anyone else seeing this problem could do the same, it would be very helpful. Especially as it seems likely that a random one pulled out in store could have the same defect.
Scott, I have my atrix boxed up ready to go back for the same issues. I went to the at&t store and looked at their 3 demo units, all of them looked the same.
If you go to a verizon store and play with a motorola droid x you'll see that its screen looks the same as well, it's just whatever panel maker motorola is using. People that are saying "It's the greatest screen evar, just as good as the iphone 4" are suffering new gadget love and can't see the flaws. It's not the worst screen ever but it is a definite step down from other manufacturers screens.

I would have to agree, the iphone4 has a pretty good display. It is a bit oversaturated, but does look pleasing to the eye. The iphone is also much smoother when using the pinch to zoom feature. With the Atrix having a dual core processor, I thought it would at least be on par with the iphone, but for some reason it's definitely not as smooth.
Oh well... just my 2 cents.
So I went in to an AT&T store last night and compared my Atrix with their demo unit.
The colors seem a little bit better, but interestingly, the demo unit's display didn't seem as bright as my Atrix, and it may have had slightly higher contrast.
I got one of the associates to look at it and agree that mine had a slight color cast to it. They said they would do a replacement for me if I came back with my paperwork from my online order, so I said I would do that today or Saturday.
I went straight home and compared my Atrix again to my wife's HTC Evo Shift. In doing that, I still felt like the color on her screen was significantly better than on mine, and in seemed better than I remembered the store's demo unit, as well.
So, I think I need to get my phone and her phone both in there, side by side with the demo unit, and see if I could live with the screen if it was exactly the same as the demo unit. I think probably yes, given the other major advantages of this phone (qHD resolution, Tegra 2, 1GB RAM), but as a graphic designer, bad colors are hard for me to take. And colors that are off in the way the Atrix's screen is off are a graver sin to me than oversaturating a la Super AMOLED.
Bottom line, I'm still on the fence. Has anyone else done any other tests?

Wait, so now the iPhone's IPS LCD is oversaturated too? Let's face it: Atrix is weak on colors -thanks to the RGBW PenTile display, where they tried to prolong its life by replacing some Blue tiles with White tiles -which makes colors pale.
It does look great with flesh tones though. Ill give it that.
People who complain about wrong colors have been looking at way oversaturated screens... as a semi advanced photographer, I can agree that the atrix screen is very very good color wise ...

Or they got an Atrix with a defective display, like me. Ony my Atrix, there's no getting around the fact that yellows look dirty and brown, and that certain shades of blue look greenish.

The screen!

Is awesome!!! Never had an HD screen before and boy is it cool! I try to look very close, but can barely see the pixels. The colors are also very amazing.
Now the question is can we use a app like voodoo screen tuner and make it even better =p lol

As much as I love the high resolution--it is AMAZING for small text--I am more bothered by the PenTile layout than I expected from reviews. I don't know about other people or how close they hold the phone to their eyes, but I can see the hatching pretty clearly in normal use on a white background. I mean, it's not HORRIBLE, but it makes the whites feel a lot less white than they do on the RGB AMOLED screens I've used. I think I need a Tab 7.7 so I can have the resolution without the PenTile tradeoffs. -_-

I read a review, can't remember which one, that was saying at full brightness the whites were incredibly white and at lower brightness settings it turned bluer. Is that true? Are you at full brightness?

It's not a matter of color reproduction; it's the physical subpixels that look a bit off. It's a subtle diagonal hatching pattern that is visible regardless of brightness. It's not horribly obvious at normal distances but I can see it. Honestly it isn't that much worse than being able to see the square pattern around individual pixels on my GS2--I was just hoping at this resolution/pixel density I wouldn't be able to see it at all.
Color reproduction isn't too bad. It's slightly different from my GS2 but I am not that picky about it, since I don't do serious photography or other art. AMOLED screens all have oversaturated colors anyway.

It's sort of like there is an overlay of tiny black dots in a diagonal pattern. As I mention above it isn't obvious especially at more than a foot or so away, but it is visible.

The screen looks fine to me. People freak out when they find out a screen is Pentile, but this isn't a Motorola pentile screen we're looking at. I'm assuming that there's a technical limitation/challenge with making Super Amoled Plus displays bigger than 4.3" or I'm sure Sammy would be using them in all of their phones. Personally, I'm enjoying the higher resolution. Can you imagine a screen this size at 800X480? It would be worse than the HTC Titan.

I hope it doesn't seem like I'm freaking out.
I'm saying this having used the phone a bit; I have it sitting right here. No argument here, it is way better than the PenTile on the RAZR or any other Moto phone I've used. And yes, I'm pretty sure you're right about the technical limitations preventing proper RGB layouts for this resolution/size, probably something to do with how small they can physically make subpixels, since it is clearly possible to have a 1280x800 Super AMOLED+ display in a 7.7" form factor. I ALSO agree that a screen this large would be awful at 800x480, and I definitely prefer the PenTile 1280x800 over RGB 800x480 at this size. I am definitely NOT saying the screen is bad, but I am disappointed because it isn't as good as I hoped it would be.
So we mostly agree. I am just more irritable I guess.

How does the screen work in direct sunlight? I am not wanting to watch a movie, but need it when working outside to read e-mail and use the phone. On my current HTC Tilt 2 I have to find shade to see anything on my screen. I have read that the Super Amoled+ screens are better. I am hoping this will work where I do not have to put on my reading glasses.
One thing is for sure, the screen definitely is an attention grabber. All of my co-workers were amazed and how sharp and clear the screen was.
This screen definitely suffers with some flash videos and dark backgrounds. I can see like lines flashing, doesnt look good at all and thats a turn off because I wanted to watch alot of videos on this. You guys can try it out and see if you see what I see. [Q] Is the Pentile screen noticeable on the Galaxy S III?

I'm thinking about buying the Galaxy S III, but the Pentile screen is really holding me back. I mean, why buy a device with a screen that looks bad and has to be looked at for several hours a week?

Older AMOLED Pentile Display were bad because they have a low ppi (240ppi on the SGS1)
But SGS3 screen has a 306ppi and the "pentile effect" seems to be not there (at least I do not see it on my SGS3

No matter what? Even if you're holding it like a inch away from your phone? I usually use my iPod touch (I have a Blackberry phone, it sucks for web browsing) when in the mornings when I don't feel like getting out of my bed. I usually hold it just 6 inches away from my eyes.
My S3 has to be the clearest screen I have ever seen. Had it for a few days now and still doesn't fail to amaze me whenever I turn the screen on.
You don't have to worry about holding it 6 inches or even 2 inches away from your face.
Its really beautiful...much better then my Nexus...

I saw the Motorola Droid Razr before I knew what pentile was and I thought it looked weird and pixellated so it's certainely not placebo. At the ppi of the GS3 it doesn't matter imo. I do still notice it (but not like I can count the pixels.. but it just is a little bit different then normal rgb screens) but the screen is still somehow the best I've seen in a phone.
You shouldn't keep yourself from buying it because of this as it not even really noticable, it's the best screen there is imo and it even spares some battery.
I can notice the pentile effect if I stare hard at the screen from less than 10cm away. I've compared my S3 to the HOX and the HOX does indeed has a finer screen. But still the S3 has one amazing screen. The blacks are much better although the colours seems a little over saturated and slightly on the warm side.

Well then I guess you have two options 1.) Wait two weeks and then go look at the phone 2.) Go with a different phone.
The only time I notice the pentile screen is whilst reading some text. It is barely recognisable but if and when you notice it you'll subconsciously start to look out for it. But it is very minor indeed, and changing the font of text helps to more or less eradicate it.
Aside from that minor quibble re text I have to say that this screen is absolutely awesome. Colours and contrast are absolutely amazing. I tend to set the screen mode to Natural as I think this gives the best colour effect.
I know this screen is awesome because when I switch from it to my iPad 3's retina screen I don't feel any degradation, if anything pictures and videos look better on it than on the iPad 3 - and that's saying something!

Yes, if you will use the phone under a magnifying glass
"Super Amoled Plus" will never work with High Resolution. They are not designed for that.
Move up dude
I my opinion It is noticeable, but only at ~3" away and I do have 20/20 vision but in any other situation It's fine, I have even fooled a few friends who own an s2 that it was a 'plus' display but as above you are best going to have a look
Its noticeable, coming from an Xperia S (which I gave to my wife for this phone) and having a G Note which died before the Xperia S, its the same for me as the G Note.
It's mainly around fonts and small icons which is more noticeable, definitely not in pictures unless you have super vision, but most of the time you're looking at fonts or small icons, so yes its there.
But FWIW I wouldn't trade it for the contrast, I've never owned a phone with such contrast (actually the Note was the same), but having said that in sunlight forget using this phone, side by side in sunlight with the Xperia S, the Sony wins hands down.

You know, I went back and forth numerous times between having the optimized backlight off and on, and I could never tell any difference. I'm convinced it's the placebo effect making people think they see a difference.

I agree with you 100%, I am from Samsung Note2 and the screen does look a bit dull especially with white backgrounds in SMS app or others.
One strange thing that the center "horizontal" area seems to be perfect white while the top and bottom of the screen have a brown / yellowish shade to it. This has been irritating me and I am trying to ignore it
I got mine just last night and absolutely love it other than this small issue with the screen. I wonder if I need to take it back to Sony CS for a comparison with another set?

after some further comparison between the same pic file displayed on different displays(including my desktop;screenshot'ed the google play interface on different phones and compared it on my desktop;etc)
i found, at least this time - -! , i think rather than the tweak by sony,, it's actually that our eyes got too accustomized to the over saturated green on samsung AMOLED devices,,, the green of google play/gmail/etc compared to samsung device did look washed out,, but thats becasue that's the accurate color google initially intended,,
Thing is, I've never owned an AMOLED phone. :/ Anyway, it's the text on mine, not images.

id admit im obssessed with this problem and till now done many comparison,,
(detailed in the thread i made: ,,,http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2472114)
and got to the conclusion,,the screen is indeed wased out , and colors are "light"/less vibrant,, but it wasnt due to defect but rather intended by sony
Just some food for thought.
I am sure you all realise that you are trying to compare different types of screen technology? Let me give an example to help perhaps?
Plasma V LCD or LCD-LED TV's. What produces 'the best' picture? Non of them, they are different. Since the LCD TV has been introduced it was supposed to be the demise of the 'old plasma' screens. Not the case at all and many top brands still make plasma screens that are superior in some aspects to the newer LCD- LCD-LED group.
I am afraid to write that it will come down to choice and preference. I went from Samsung screens to Sony and back to Samsung in terms of phone. I didn't want to as I have a preference for the type of screen Sony produces. I shall be keeping my Xperia 10.1 tablet as the screen just amazes me. The screen on the Note 3 that I now own is back to these over saturated colours and odd definition and contrast. No choice for me as the Ultra is just too big so I had to go back to Samsung but....
Its rather folly to even try and compare an apple with an orange just the same with different screen technology. One can purchase a lemon in any brand. I think to write that the ultra screen looks "washed out" is difficult as it could be a lemon. In general the new screens coming from Sony are very vibrant and more importantly realistic in colour reproduction and tone.
Choice will be ones buying strategy. Manufacturers have been trying to kill of Plasma screens for years but cant as they have something other screen don't.
Regards
I have to disagree. Those tech are replacing older ones cause they obviously produces more correct representation of colours and faster refresh rates. Except plasma which still produces one of the est colour, but unfortunately cant be made in higher resolution because of its inherent limitation. I have to say my preference has always been about correctness. I was hoping someone would say its a defective unit and the good unit would produce display similar to iphone or samsung. But i guess my upgrade have to wait until i am aure the display is at least as good as the IPS-LCD which iphone uses.

You begin by disagreeing then write exactly what I have written
No problem.:highfive:
I have to say, I never had an AMOLED device, but I love the colors of the XZU.
It doesn't look washed out at all, the colors are indeed a lot like the colors on my IPS PC-monitors in color-boost modus (which means the colors are even more colorful than they are normally).
There are devices where the colors look washed out, e.g. the Nexus 4 and 7, but definitely not on the XZU.
If you think the colors are looking washed out you either got a defective unit or you have a very strange impression of what colors should look like.

Thanks, i guess. Lol.
Lets just say if the display unit I was comparing was 80pc like an iphone in color and depth of black. Or like a plasma tv. I would have bought it already. Ill wait and see for now.. cheers

Thoughts on the screen quality

Just received by OP2 today. Initial thoughts are that it looks and feels very similar to OPO but the screen is a definite step backwards. Colors seem washed out, and even at full brightness it is dimmer then my S6 at ~40% brightness. Viewing angles also seem poor.
In my mind this is a bigger issue than lack of NFC or quick charging. The screen is the one thing you're constantly looking say on a phone, not some feature. It almost seems like the screen on this phone was an afterthought.

Looks great here.
Coming from Note 5 it looked a little washed out at first. I've changed wallpaper to a bright one and not as bad.
I'm still happy with the screen.
U have to use it and it's never gonna match up to a nexus 6 or an s6 as they had QHD but I've had my op2 over a week now and it's great just go on zedge and load some wallpapers..

AMOLED screens have infinite contrast which makes them bright and punchy. Going back to just about any LCD it will look washed out.
KCAL COLOR PROFILE Amoled Style:
Colors: 255,255,255
Saturation: 285
Hue: 0
Display: 255
Contrast: 264
Gamma: 0
Much better!
IMO screen of OPT is a vast improvement compared to OPO.

Yes the screen is washed out compared to my note 5....not surprising really given the technology. However the more annoying screen issue is the constant dimming of the screen when darker screens are presented even when the adaptive brightness is off. The screen is constantly fluctuating and it bothers the heck out of me. Might need to use a custom rom just to get rid of it. Or sell the phone. Whichever comes first. Haha.
I'm disappointed as well, coming from the OPO. The lack of color tuning - no, that placebo slider in O2 2.1 doesn't do anything - leaves the screen with a too low gamma and too high color temperature, resulting in washed-out and cool-looking images. Stock OPO wasn't that great, but at least could be tweaked. No, I'm not looking for the overhyped Samsung AMOLED look that people equate with proper color rendition. I'm a photographer and all you need to do is put the same photos up on a computer monitor - even a business grade one - as on the phone to see how lackluster it is. By itself, it doesn't look terrible, but it's clearly not accurate.
I've got my opo2 yesterday and:
1. Screen is yellowish on the bottom! I read about it before, it was opo1 issue, but it seems to be opo2 issue too :////
2. Yeah, colors are washed out as hell comparing to my last phone - Samsung Galaxy s4 (but now white is white at least ) . Btw Is there any way to set contrast and saturation like on opo1? Why they don't include it for opo2 rom?
I compare the screens of my OP1 and OP2 and i need to say that is yellowish con OP2, isn't pure white and thats a very fault, i think that of warm colors.

Have either of you tried the 2.1 update with the new cool/warm display slider? Curious if that helped at all.

Well, not at all... Unless I slide it 100% to the right, then whole screen is yellowish and bottom part is even more :/
I'm hearing many complaints about the screen from folks who haven't removed the factory pre-installed hazy plastic screen protector, either because they don't realize it's there or if they do don't imagine it makes much difference. Captain Obvious' pro-tip : take it off, the difference is huge (or YUGE if you're from Brooklyn).
