Can it be rooted? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions & Answers

Hi, I'm looking into the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 via T-Mobile and would like to know if it can be rooted before purchase. I have not seen much information on it. Thank you.

I suspect that it won't be much different that the problems developers ran into with the S7 series. We will probably get a stock root but unless someone figures out the kernel issue and the unlocked bootloader we will be in the same boat.

As of right now, no. But the S8+ has root and the Note 8 is very similar.

There are a few variants of the 'original' S7 and the more recently released S7 Slim. First has a resistive screen second has a capacitive.
It is rumoured that they are identical inside so any accessories (should they appear!) will work on both.
Just make sure you have Android 2.2.2 or above.
I really hope the slim gets accesories but the support from huawei is horrible so i wouldnt hold my breath
Sent from my IDEOS S7 using XDA App
I thought they were both the same? IDEAOS that is.. Only new one was the slim?
I was thinking about getting a Huawei tablet. They're relatively cheap and I'd think they'd be alright for general use. Was doing some research and they're different? Have they been rooted yet?
Yes, i rooted mine half an hour ago infact! I did a writeup sometime ago, however i cant post it due to low post count, or post links so info is lost!

Rooted and upgraded to Android 2.2.2 (Froy) they become a great tablet.
Unlocked ROM, flash enabled, 1gHz CPU unlocked, Apps2sd, more sensitive screen, OTG support for USB host, and cheap!
Can you tell me how you did it?
Hello,
I recently got an S7 Slim. It is a great device, especially for the price point. My only complaint is that the BB version does not come with an active SIM slot. Who knew?
Can you tell me how you rooted your Slim? I have tried oneclick z4 and universal and have not been able to get access.
Thanks

What do you mean? The BB version's SIM slot is fully active.
However the baseband radio firmware that ships with the device has SEVERE bugs that cause the cellular radio to fail in many circumstances. For me, the device only worked in towers with the same area code as my SIM.
The Froyo (2.2) ROMs had new baseband firmware that fixed most if not all of these problems. USA customers never officially saw them, but the Indonesian 2.2 ROM works well on our devices - look at joenilan's ROM in the Development section, it has a link to the Indo 2.2 update.
Edit: Sorry, ooops, missed that you had a Slim and not the original S7. Yeah, I don't believe the Slim has any 3G capability.
Thanks for the response, I also figured out how to root my device successfully! What should I do next?

you may not find too many people here that have the Korean version or run it.
HOWEVER, go into the general forum and look into the "Super Everything Thread"
if you check post #3, I believe everything related to your model is listed here on XDA
doesn't look like much to me. I think there is only 1 ROM
have you tried Google to run search?
good luck

Of course I did but i'm not sure that my Note can run that ROM because it's only for Note AT&T.
Anyway thank you so much.

that's really confusing and im not sure how that happened, but that doesn't mean anything.
I might question...........what modem are you running with success. I would think if you have AT&T modem, than you could run ROM that's compatible.
don't want you to brick though, just in case im an idiot.
it is not suggested to post same question in multiple threads but I would suggest the "Stupid Questions" thread.
not that your question is stupid, but definitely a unique issue from my experience. maybe you could word it slightly different and they may inquire as to which MODEM you are using too. assuming your phone is working ?
they are very knowledgeable and I have visited there a few times myself with probably more stupid question than this.
good luck

New Phone Recommendations?

I am currently a Verizon customer and am still using my old Galaxy SIII.
Several years back, I allowed the phone to install an update which essentially locked down the phone. Something like Knox if I recall correctly. It made it so that I was unable to install custom recovery, such as TWRP which I had used for years. As a result, I stopped paying attention to the android development forums and such... so I'm a rather out of the loop now.
Anyway, I'm looking to finally upgrade my phone and am looking for some guidance / recommendations. Are the newer Galaxy phones still locked down or are you able to install custom roms / recoveries? If so, are there brands other than Samsung that are more popular as far as being able to install custom roms / recoveries? I'm interested in the Android Pay and/or Samsung Pay features that came out a few years ago (are these features still useful?)
Additionally, I am still on the grandfathered unlimited data plan, which I would want to preserve in the process of upgrading.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Mostly I want a somewhat new-ish phone that will be customizable (ie unlocked bootloader) through Verizon here in the US.

As explained by xanthrax, there already is an established thread for phone recommendations. For reducing unnecessary clutter, I need to ask you to continue your discussion over there.

Is there a good tutorial?

For the tips and tricks/hidden stuff?
I havent had a note since the note 7 recall and need a refresher

No root at the end of the tunnel

I was just wondering why all the other phones have roots except for the Galaxies?
Some say it is because the providers are locking the bootloader. The question is; are those providers locking the Galaxy bootloader only?
Does anyone think this will make people move from Galaxy to other [rootable] models?
Honestly, this is the first Samsung phone in where I don't think you need root. They allow themes, it's awesome on battery, runs really smoothly, and offers a ton of features that work well. The only reason I ever modded my phone was to increase the longevity and add to it's features... something I haven't really needed on this phone. So I doubt it. I hope they come out with Oreo soon...

Just FYI but if you did a search here on XDA you'd discover that the Snapdragon S8 has had root for a few months now. It's doubtful that we'll see an unlocked bootloader though. Search is your friend!

Thanks for the input. I saw the root, however, I'm debating whether to root or not. The version listed there is older than what we have. And, like Mr. eatmeimadanish mentioned I haven't had a need for rooting so far. It's just I miss the nice ROMs that different people were putting up with so many more tweaks and stuff. And, there are some applications that work on rooted phones, which I'm unable to use anymore.

I haven't rooted either. I'm happy with my S8+ as is. Besides, I use Samsung Pay all the time. Also, without an unlocked bootloader there won't be any custom roms.

I did do a search, but couldn't find something specific to Rooting...
But also....this will be an unlocked bootloader so no custom Roms
Was the Galaxy S5 the same? Cant remember if it had an unlocked BL

1) S8 Snapdragon root . It looks like it's been cleaned up quite a bit since the last time I saw it. Keep in mind, it's not the easy process that we used to have, so read, read and then read again. I personally have not done it as I'm happy with my S8+ as is.
2) Correct, no unlocked bootloader = No custom ROMs.
3) No, the S5 bootloader was unlocked, which is why we had some great Roms. I miss MOAR, but life changes, I've moved on.
Off the topic but, I remember u Ramer from the S5 MOAR thread. I had that rom on my s5 also. I love my s8+ as well.

I saw the rooting thread, and even downloaded the files. But I'm hesitating if I should root or not. The thread is closed, which means it's not keeping up with the updates. Although, we all say we're happy with the phone as is. But, are we really?
