SMS won't convert to MMS when too large - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, i would like to start off by saying i have a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S7 (SM-G930P) with 7.0.0 Nougat. Stock Firmware and Rom.
Now that that's out of the way, we all know 160 characters is the max an SMS is aloud to send. before i was able to send over this by the phone automatically converting the SMS into an MMS. i had the phone two months after the S7 was released. this problem didn't start until 3 months ago. the android system doesn't show a toast notification saying "Converting to multi media message". i have literally tried everything for this problem. settings are good on both general and stock SMS app. firmware was even flashed by Samsung them self to the newest firmware. i have factory reset the phone twice with no luck. i thought after that it would fix the problem but no. any answers on this? i could not find anything on good about this.

Well that is moat likely due to Samsung using RCS instead if sms to send it. I think sprint is using rcs now. Which means it is all mms as it's a data based thing. Might want to check with your carrier.

I would talk to t-mobile if they are your carrier. They may not be set up for using the same rcs that sprint used on their device.

[Q] Galaxy SIII Not Receiving Text Messages

Hi,
I recently helped a colleague purchase a Galaxy SIII phone here in China, Guangzhou and made sure I checked the phone over completely before I purchased it.
I've done a search on the forums and check out anything that may be similar, but to no avail.
The problem is:
The phone will not receive any text messages, or at least they don't go through to the messaging app.
Text messages were being received normally for around a week
I disabled a bunch of pre-installed Chinese crap that is unfortunately not un-installable as it's baked into the ROM
It happened once, so I factory reset it, and then tested it. The text messages worked fine
I then disabled the Chinese stuff once again and installed Skype. Just to be sure, I sent more test text messages, and they were all received fine.
Around one week later, here we are, she says that text messages are not being received again.
All other functions of the phone are working. Internet / Edge network, sending texts, Play store, everything. Just not the receiving of texts!
I'm fairly confused as to this behaviour, particularly as it seems the text messages are working for a time limited period.
I had some inklings of what it could be:
- The SIII takes a micro-sim, the shop "manually" chopped the SIM using a cutter. Could this have damaged the SIM and caused this behaviour?
- The phone itself is faulty
- Something is up with the China Mobile settings / network and she needs to call them.
What would be your diagnosis, ideas, solutions XDA'ers?
Further information of any kind is, of course, available on request.
**** My ideas for a fix ****
Root the bastard and get a standard UK ROM on the phone to see if it works. However, I have some concerns. Years ago, when I bought my first HTC desire, when I rooted and put a UK ROM on it, I discovered that my phone was an imported Thai version of the phone and almost bricked it into a reboot loop as the phone didn't like a different regions ROM being loaded on.
I had to go through a convoluted process of making a specially edited SD-card to fool the phone into accepting different ROMS. Is this the case with the Galaxy SIII or have times moved on to more sophisticated means?
Thanks.
GJO
Have you try other messaging apps like Hancent SMS or Go SMS to confirm that msg service is not working?
Or maybe the CSC is causing the problem?

Open the stock messaging app. In its menu go to settings. Check that there is a number recorded under message centre. If not use Google to find the number for the carrier you are with and enter it.
I'm on an unrooted phone with a stock Rom and twice messaging has stopped working. The cause was that this number had spontaneously disappeared.

Ok, I've tried:
- alternative messaging apps, and they're not picking it up either.
- the message centre number.
When you say CSC? You mean the carrier code? It was bought in China and fitted with a Chinese ROM, but I'll look at the ROM settings and see what it is.
Thanks.
U dial *#1234# then you can see your csc
CSC – (Consumer Software Customization) Refers to the specific country or carriers for that said firmware is being build.
This where it contains the default settings of each specific geographical region, carrier network providers and network data connections.

I am having this problem. It was all working fine then suddenly it stopped. I don't know what could be the cause but I fooled around with the settings, deleted old text messages and then suddenly I received dozens of text messages.
It's like my phone isn't trying to receive any text messages. It can send text messages out but it won't receive any.
I am using Omega 31.1.
Can someone help me out please?

Using ATT sim shows incoming numbers as internation

Hello, I've got a quick question to ask on behalf of a friend. I recently setup her verizon note 2 for ATT service via NET10 but the problem is when I call her from lets say my phone number (111)111-1111 it comes in as +11 1 111 11 11.
I've doubled checked the assisted dialing settings and their setup as they should, I've even tried the phone.apk from the ATT NOTE 2, along with telephony.apk files... all with no result. If anyone knows a solution please do feel free to post it as I'm not very smart with this type of issues when it comes to android but I'm starting to suspect its because this phone with a sim card isn't meant to be used locally but over seas.

I have the same setup and same problem. I've looked for 3 months and couldn't find a fix. And as of 2 days ago, i'm not longer able to recieve mms. I can send just fine but incoming keeps failing to download. I've tried several apn's and nothing seems to work. it's strange because it's been working fine past few months. Other than that, Net10 is great on this phone as long as you don't have to call CS for anything.

Also having this problem only if I return a call from a previous incoming call it fails because of the "+" prefix.

mine does the sane thing. so I have to either go into contacts or manually put the number. checked all my settings to make sure international calling wasn't causing the problem. I have no idea what's causing this.
I did find an apn that fixed my mms issue though.

You can solve the MMS issue by getting another messaging APP like TEXTRA and adding the MMS APN setting in it. It will work fine after that.

I have spent days looking over this site and others like it. Can not for the life of me find a solution. I too have the verizon international note 2, use straight talk(att) and want my gps. I flashed the clean rom ace version onto my note, if i use the verizon option, gps works, but get a message can not make international calls if i call someone who just called me. the +1 issue. IF i use the att option the phone works flawless.... except no gps. I tried the beans flash and dirty back to clean rom with no avail. any one fix the issue? I need att service on verizon international phone with the gps!!!

Odd texting issue on Fascinate w/ GeeWiz 4.2.2

So... I recently got a replacement used Fascinate for my original unit that had a shattered screen. It has GeeWiz 4.2.2 loaded on it and I really like it. Damn near perfect... except for one thing and I'm not even sure/don't think it's the phone/ROM.
My texting issue is related to MMS. I can send any text... short, extended/pages long, picture texts (MMS) and I can receive all except long texts. And it's only an issue with my wife. She can write a book. LOL After doing more testing with other people, it seems to be a thing with Pageplus and Verizon. My wife is on Pageplus. I'm on Verizon...for now. My son is also on Verizon and has the same issue. I had a friend who is also on Pageplus send me a long text and it failed too. If I have someone on Verizon send me a extended text (over 140 characters) and comes thru fine. Only Pageplus customers seem to have the issue and it's only to my phone. I can have my wife send a long text to a friend who on Verizon and it goes thru fine.
The failure is on the senders side too. The senders phone will says failed to send. I don't get anything on my end. This is only to my phone.
I've searched and haven't found but a couple of references to a similar problem and no solutions. One possible thing that I haven't followed up on yet is this.... This phone was on Pageplus. I activated it on Verizon. Verizon shows no issues on their end at all but I'm wondering if Pageplus still has something in their system from the previous owner with this ESN. It's only Pageplus people that have this issue sending texts to my phone. They can send to other Verizon phones. And this is only long/extended texts that are 140 characters or more. Short texts and picture texts work fine. Oh....and if the sender attaches a pic to the long text, I will receive it.
It really weird. Wondering if anyone has seen anything similar or has any ideas. My next step is to call Pageplus support to see if they can help. I was also going to re-activate my old phone to verify the problem goes away. I welcome any insights.
Mike
PS - Sorry this is my first post. Can't believe I've been on this board this long and haven't posted before but this is a daily stop for me for years now.

have you checked the settings in the "Messaging" app itself, seems I recall a converting sms to mms or some setting that deals with that...

I thought that had more to do with outgoing texts than incoming but I will try it later and report back.
So I looked in the settings of stock texting app and it doesn't have the "convert long sms to mms" option but I'm running 8sms in Default mode, which basically just themes the stock app and adds a couple more setting/features....one of which IS "convert long sms to mms". It was doing this before I started using 8sms so it's not the app. I'll try the change and post back results.
I tried turning that option on but it had no effect. Open to other suggestions. Still need to call Page plus support yet too,
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
maybe try a different ROM to make sure it's not just an issue with GeeWiz? roll back to a stock ROM and see if that fixes anything... also use the right ROM, you know, eh03 for vzw devices, etc.
Or possibly try another texting app or even hangouts will do sms/mms...
It sounds like page plus is possibly not splitting the message into 2 sms or not converting a long sms to a mms unless it explicitly contains a picture,,,
I would think that is software settings
That also could potentially be the sender's messaging app not converting it to mms and/or not splitting the message into 2 sms.
I know you said there were multiple people sending you stuff,, to they both have the same app?
Let me try to clarify the scenario....
My phone is a Fascinate with Geewiz 4.2.2 ROM activated on Verizon (for now LOL).
I have several people on Pageplus that can't send me an extended text message, meaning a text message over 140 characters. One is an iPhone 4, one is a Fascinate on Superclean ROM, and the last is a Fascinate on Geewiz 2.9. If any of them try to send me a message that longer than 140 characters, it fails to send on THEIR end. I never see it. These same 3 people can send the exact same text that fails to other Verizon phones with no issue.
My phone was originally a Verizon phone that was then switched to Pageplus. When I got it, I put it back on Verizon.
It seems to me that this is an issue with Pageplus, almost like there's some information in their system still that sees my phone as inactive and refuses to send it. The texts fails on the senders end almost like they don't have service. I need to take a chunk of time and call Pageplus support and see if this is even a possibility. Regular texts and picture messages sent from those same phones DO make it thru. I can send all forms of SMS/MMS with no issues. It's only receiving and only from Pageplus customers. If a Verizon customer sends me an extended text, it comes thru no problem.
I would think if it's the ROM, the problem would be evident regardless of the carrier the message was sent from. How could a ROM single out a specific message from a specific carrier? I'm not saying it's possible but it seems like this is a system issue on Pageplus side.
Thanks for the suggestions. It helps validate the steps I've taken and my thought process to solve it.
Well, I spent about 2hrs on the phone between Pageplus and Verizon tech support. Each blamed the other for the issue but ultimately Verizon is looking into it. Made to Level 3 support for whatever that is worth. Supposed to get a call back after they pour thru whatever they have to look thru. We'll see. They all agree that if the phone can receive EMS texts (Verizons extended text message protocol), the phone itself can't distinguish between carriers. The settings for each are the same. Since Pageplus and Verizon use the same system/network, it SHOULD work and can't really be my device. It's something on one of their networks.
Oh... and nobody has ever heard of something like this ever happening....which gives me great confidence that it will get resolved... LOL
Latest... tech support has been less than helpful... SURPRISE! LOL
They said that my phone is rejecting the messages but can't explain how Verizon Extended messages get thru but not Pageplus...which uses the exact same system. Not sure what else to do than maybe try a different ROM to see if it really is Geewiz or not...or maybe swap a device on the account too.

How do I get texting to work on a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 with T-Mobile service?

I just got this phone about a month ago and I am not able to send any text messages but yet, I can receive them. MMS, data, and calling works pretty good too. MMS didn't work at first until I had to change my APN settings. Is there a way to fix this?
Does this problem have something to do with the software version? It's 5.0.1 (lollipop)
I'm having the same problem with my phone also!
Samsung Galaxy S4 (Verizon)
Im also having the same issue. Sold phone and bought lg g3. Ive tried changing to LTE / UTMS / GSM from global. But nothing. I turn off wifi and on data, sometimes texts go thru. But not 100%.. Another thing you can do temporarily is get a google voice number. All calls will be forwarded to your number and texts will show up in email and hangouts. Good luck

same problem here. It seems we need to either disable lte or find a way to choose lte/gsm mode to get the texting work. I did not find a way to do this in lollipop. Please help.
I need a fix also
No texting on Verizon s4 i545 on 5.0.1 with root
None of the radio switches are working
Need a proper solution ,
partial soln
I have the same problem going to cricket. Here is the solution I am using until a better one is found.
EDIT: (My SCH-I545 is rooted and running Stang5Litres rom, OF1)
[App] Advanced Signal Status
[Select] Additional Info at bottom of page
[Select] Phone Info
[Setting] GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)
This soln turns of LTE, but still allows me to use EVDO and HSPA, and texts send and recieve fine. Still trying to find a LTE soln.

Enhanced Messaging?

Anyone able to get enhanced messaging to work yet? If you are using Messages (Google Messenger) it is listed under advanced but it never completes.
It worked great on my Note 4. I like the ability to text over wifi.

Yes, it's working for me on my Sprint Galaxy S8 +. I did have trouble were it wouldn't work right away, had to wait like 24-48 hours after I activated the phone on my line for the system to provision it or whatever. Just keep trying and eventually it should complete and go through.
I use Android Messaging because the Samsung app supposed to have RCS and play nice with Android messages but when Ive sent messages from the Samsung app it acts like I dont have RCS at all
Doesn't work
I have had my phone for a few weeks but it still doesn't work. Every time I try it, it tells me Excuse the wait... Messages will let you know when this step is complete but it never completes.
Strange I was able to enable it on my wifes S8+ but mine will not enable. Tried clearing cache and uninstall and reinstall. Anyone else had this issue?
I chatted with TEP and Sprint, they sent me a new sim card and that didn't resolve it. I factory reset the phone twice and that didn't resolve it. I called Sprint and Sprint said to call Samsung.
Here is the definitive answer from Samsung "It is being rolled out in batches and certain versions of the phone have not received that update."

I wonder if taking the phone to a best buy that has a Samsung experience store if they can add it.
It will go thru after Day or 2 I had issues but it resolved its self
