Updated to Oreo and now HD Widgets will not update/refresh? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions & Answers

Just updated yesterday to Android version 8.0.0 on my T-Mobile Note8 SM-N950U. I have been using HD Widgets V4.1 for years on all my Notes 2, 3, 4 and 8. and now I cannot Refresh my Calendar, Agenda (scroll up or down) and Stock Widgets (refresh) using the scroll feature or refresh icon. It also seems to take a long time to get the widgets to display. I have been playing with this for two days and tried to download a newer version of HD Widgets to no avail. I did searches on the web and on here, too. Checked all my settings, changed some, too. I am using an old launcher. Next Launcher v3.22 as I have tried other launchers, but prefer this one. Any suggestions?
Anyone have this problem? Other than this Oreo 8 seems OK so far. Thanks in advance for any help.

Strange, I'm having similar issues with widgets not updating, except I use Chronus weather widget not HD widgets. I just installed a beta version of Chronus to see if it helps. There are a few others on their support page talking about the same issues.

Going to try another launcher: Nova Launcher Pro. Will post results here on any possible fix.

I have a T-Mobile Note 8 and just updated to OREO with the same problems with the widgets. I'm using Next 3D launcher. My Business Calendar, Beautiful Widgets and others are not refreshing on the screen. Is this a Next 3D problem or something else? Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Just got through installing Nova Launcher Pro and it works fine. I just loaded the widgets that I had on my Next Launcher that would not work/refresh and they all work on Nova. So, I will continue to use Nova instead of Next. Try Nova and see if you have good results. You can get the free version from the Play store. Let us know how you all do. Thanks for responding and providing your info. Hope I have helped you. if I find anything else, I will report on this thread.

Did you get it to work for you? I also installed Nova Launcher Pro on my wife's Note 8 and it is working great.

I had this same issue on my T-mobile Note8 and after switching to Nova Launcher, no more issues. This morning Device Maintenance put Nova to sleep and reverted to Samsung Experience... but i added Nova to the do not monitor list and rebooted so hopefully i'll never see SE9 again... (i hadn't rebooted since i installed Nova yesterday morning - reboots are normally just on Mondays)

I flashed to the rom found on this thread...

... a couple hours ago and love it, the customizations are awesome and I have been so caught up in the new features that i haven't even re-downloaded my apps yet. Great rom so far but i have a small problem.
I cannot use downloaded widgets or HTC widgets, i don't know if its the LauncherPro app or not because i haven't checked because I am unsure if these roms require home replacements to run properly (thats another question of mine, can I turn off ADW or Launcher Pro while running this rom?) but if anyone knows how to use downloaded widgets with this rom i would appreciate it if you could let me know.
Thanks in Advance
I found out that widgets only work if they are installed on internal memory, so if you download widgets or apps that give widgets you must leave them or move them to internal memory or else the widgets will not show up in the home replacement program.

HTC widgets are for Sense based ROMs. They will not work on CM Roms. Widgets that are found in the market can be installed and used though. As far as LauncherPro or ADW... it's all a matter of what works best for you. I personally use ADW EX. Others love LauncherPro. Some also like Go Launcher and Zeam Launcher is also getting more popular from what I hear. Any of those can be installed from the Market and is you go with LauncherPro Plus it has Sense-like widgets that come with it. You have to purchase the plaus version for those widgets though.
I have a lot of free apps and need to go in and "pro" all of them, i used adw for a while and one thing i miss is the uninstall option when you long press an app on the homescreen but launcher pro came native with this rom so im going to leave it and just buy the pro version i think.
I mentioned that this rom does not support HTC widgets because of launcher pro always running, i found a fix. Beautiful widgets is one way, it is basically a HTC widget replacement but i just found a post on this site about widgets too that was extremely helpful in getting the widgets i want, here it is.

Nova Launcher problems

Anyone else here try Nova Launcher on their ICS ROM? I'm having issues with adding widgets to the homescreen. Every time I try to do so, the launcher closes.

Yep. Nova doesn't work when you try to add widgets. Not sure why, though it could be something to do with phone compatibility or the fact that Nova is currently optimized for Android 4.0.3. Until the devs are able to get 4.0.3 running, I think we're kind of SOL. It kind of sucks, but we'll be able to use it soon enough.
same. it is a bummer
Yeah even if you install it as a system app it still does the same thing FC on widgets. The stock 4.0.1 launcher is so laggy in comparision, but it's better than nothing. 4.0.2 - 4.0.3 seems to solve a lot of the transition issues that plagued 4.0.1.
Once we have aosp it'll probably work properly.
i'm running ineffibilis and i'm having no issues. trebuchet on the other hand...
On Nova beta 13, new apps' widgets don't appear in the locker unless I restart Nova. Existing widgets show fine. However, the new widgets show up fine in the widget picker, whether from launcher screen or switched from drawer mode. No FC yet for me.

[Q] Anyone know why widgets "freeze" in ICS?

This is a problem that seems to occur only in ICS, but I don't know more than that. It didn't happen when I was running stock, stock/rooted, or Saurom. I'm using the Apex launcher but a quick Google search shows similar reports from people using Nova.
I'm running Flappjaxxx's ICS IMM76D UCLE2 Base (but I haven't updated to the new release that came out today). I've also noticed this on ICS Objection (with Apex launcher).
So, here's the issue: occasionally widgets will "Freeze" and stop updating. I've seen this with Beautiful Widgets (the clock will stop updating, so it will read 3:05 when it's actually 3:30), Android Pro Widgets (specifically the calendar and bookmark widgets--the calendar will not let you advance to different months, the bookmarks widget will not update to show new bookmarks if you refresh it), and the TweetCaster Pro widget (it will not update to show the latest tweets when you press the refresh button).
There is still some functionality with the widgets--they don't die completely. I can still touch the clock portion of Beautiful Widgets and get to the alarm settings. I can still touch individual days in the APW calendar widget and see appointments, and touch the header to launch the full calendar, and the APW Bookmarks widget is still scrollable, clicking individual bookmarks will launch those pages, and touching the header bar will launch the browser's default page. But for some reason they stop updating.
Things I know
1. Restarting Apex launcher appears to reset the widgets. They start fully functioning again.
That's about it.
RIght now I"m trying to determine if JuiceDefender might have something to do with it. I don't think it would because I've used JD on my other phones with no issues... HOWEVER, none of my other phones have ever run ICS. I don't know. Maybe ICS is different. I know JD had issues working with Gingerbread for a while...
Anyone have any thoughts? Questions? Experience with this? It's a bit mystifying. NOw that I know restarting Apex launcher gets everything working again it's a lot less annoying than it was (rebooting every time was a pain) but I'd still like to figure out how to make it go away.
I had same problem with beautiful widgets. my task killer was my problem.it was to aggressive

Same problem.
Have this problem both with Omega 7.0 rom and cyanogenmod.
Some widgets freezes after some minutes when phone is in standby mode.
Just by tilting the phone and let the window be landscape and then tilt it back again will activate the widget.
But it is annoying....
i had the same problem with widgets freezing; i uninstall go weather widget and go launcher and now it s fine again !!
edit: oops it came back...no freeze with Apex but it's still freezing with Tsf..
reedit: i found my problem: it was "clever contact widget "that froze the others widgets but only with TSF shell (not with Apex!!!)

i'm using a motorola atrix 2 with stock ics and this's happening to me also , it's not any app that's causing this problem , it's a bug in ics as to many .. searched gooogle .. no launcher can help , i tried nova prime and apex but same happens to both , but now i'm on stock blur again and it doesn't happen so frequently but still happens, they say that only google can help in this case , they have to give an update .. so we have to hopw that they'll give us one soon .. until then we have to restart the launcher
note- try an anlog clock on your home screen , or anlaog and digital both home screens in a one home screen , you might notice that digital clock freezes when the analog clock works fine , i don't know why but that's happening to me ..

Issue with Nova Launcher (newbie)

This is my first android experience. I got the Note 2 and decided to try out Nova launcher after so many raving reviews. I download and installed it but whenever I click on my gmail widget, the theme reverts back to touchwiz. Everything seems to be okay. Is it not compatible with gmail? Or am I missing something (setting?) Thanks

Did you make nova launcher as default launcher?I also think that nova needs root for widgets.
To make nova default launcher go to nova settings and in "Select default Home" select nova

Yes, I did. But any time I click on my gmail widget, it reverts back. Once I hit the Nova shortcut icon, Nova comes back. I'd love to be able to use this launcher. I'm trying to stay away from rooting at this time. If it requires it, I'll just use stock TW for now.

If that's true, that's a bummer.. I've already uninstalled Nova but my agenda widget was working fine. It was the gmail widget that was causing TW to reappear after I closed out from the gmail widget. Don't use that many widgets, (mail, calendar, agenda, task) but if they dont play nice with Nova, I'll have to stick with TW.

Not True. I have Nova (prime) installed and have been able to use every widget. (it may be helpful to enable widget overlaping in the settings.)
Having the same problem on my SIII but I'm rooted and it only happens when I use the back button to get out of apps, it will back out of the app to touchwiz. I have nova as default so as soon as i hit the home button nova is back. It didn't start until I updated to Jelly Bean. On ICS nova was running smooth as butter.
Nova crashes a lot. I am rooted and have sent crash logs to the Dev and sent seperate emails and have heard nothing back. I like it but when looking through widgets in the drawer it crashes, when resizing from time to time it crashes and when attempting to move a widget yup it crashes. Not all the time but more than it should.
I'm using Nova Prime and not rooted and all of my widgets are working fine.
First try to remove the widget and add it again with nova.
Second clear the default action for TW (in application)
Last i advise you to freeze TW : in application too, normaly the button for uninstal is changed by a "Disable" button.
Try apex. Almost same deal as nova but I like it a little better
Is that a hemi? No silly its Paranoid Android!

Same thing happens here! I've tried everything. I think it might be having too many things widgets or some issues with custom home screen grids.
I thought it might be the snote page widget and this slide show widget. Removed both and now it doesn't crash when resizing.
When scrolling through widgets in the app drawer.... I found awesome widgets pro to be causing the problem so I just uninstalled that.
Really hope they fix this since I'm missing my slide show widgets-tried several and my snote widget.
Never going back to touchwiz though ha!
Mines the paid version if that helps. I really really like nova and the landscape mode. Just the issue with the widgets really bugs me, and the few hours I've spend trying to solve it.!
I have APW as well. It has been hit or miss with crashes. I restored the other day and things have been good for the most part. I am a heavy widget used which I am sure is the problem.

I know this phenomenon as well...and here´s my "solution": This was my experience everytime I got a new Samsung phone. Suddenly, Android jumps back from Nova to TW (e.g. Site Buddy on the Note). And it ALWAYS stopped this behavior after a few days of usage. It was always that easy

Hehe, that´s why I wrote "solution" in quotation marks! For me, there never was a real "solution" for this issue, the problem simply dissapeared after a few hours/days of usage!
I see! Let's hope it's the case for me too! Although I'm not sure since I've Been using nova for a while, the problems just stated though.

Tip about launcher performance

In playing with the G4 over the past few weeks, I've discovered some interesting things about launcher performance, so I thought I would share.
After using Google Now Launcher for several days, I began to notice that it was sometimes dropping frames and stuttering a bit much for my liking when swiping between screens. I switched back to the stock LG Home launcher and amazingly, scrolling was almost perfectly smooth with hardly any dropped frames.
Curious as to why this was, I began testing various launchers... Nova, Action Launcher, Apex Launcher, L Launcher, an AOSP launcher3 build from KitKat, etc. Finally, I noticed a pattern. Launchers based on the KitKat AOSP launcher source all ran very smoothly, while launchers based on the Lollipop AOSP launcher source all dropped frames too often when scrolling around the home screens and app drawers.
So from this, we can deduce two things:
1) The stock LG Home launcher is based on KitKat or earlier AOSP launcher source code. No surprise there.... just look at the page indicator dots, the app drawer background, and the three dot menu style in the app drawer. They all have KitKat styling.
2) LG optimized the G4 to run KitKat based launchers more smoothly since that's what their own launcher is.
So what can we do about it? Well, use an old version of your favorite launcher, of course. Action Launcher 2 is still available in the Play Store and has its own listing. I went with an old version of Nova (Classic v3.3 from http://novalauncher.com) and find it performs more smoothly than the newly released Nova v4. And not to fear, Nova v3.3 can still be configured to look and act like a Lollipop based launcher by changing a few settings. See my screenshots of Nova v3.3 below to see for yourself.
Hope all of you who are driven crazy by the slightest stutters find this information helpful. Let me know about your experiences.
Thanks for this. Will give it a try.
I was surviving with the stock launcher but went crazy after installing the tempered glass protector. After removing the glass all of my swipes or scrolls were being registered as taps.

I too have been trying out the top 10 most know launchers in the playstore and have seen that issue as well compared to the stock launcher. What makes me go back to the stock launcher is two things. Health widget for step counter, and the smart notice widget.

I know me too. How nice will be to add those into nova.
I'll be honest, I am running the latest Nova launcher and I haven't noticed any dropped frames or hiccups whatsoever. Everything seems buttery smooth.

apex is the smoothest launcher at the moment. nova ( i have the paid version ) is not that smooth like action launcher 3,
i'm only running apex for now
The app drawer and everything runs better , try and see yourself , you'll be impressed.
Great discovery. Nova and Google Now was always my go-to launcher but I have noticed frame drops. Very minimal, but I guess some of us are cursed to notice these things.
I always end up reverting to the stock launcher after awhile. I'll try the suggestion above and give Apex a run for a few days.
Also, anyone find it weird that some widgets like the default clock widget can't be used with other launchers?

Not weird at all, LG based widgets are baked into the LG launcher. Same thing happens with Samsung based widgets, can only use them on the TW launcher.
I'm using stock LG's launcher and it works very nice for me. I disabled Smart Bulletin option from settings and the launcher flies. With this feature enabled the launcher was getting laggy after a few hours of use ,now it's just perfect.
The only thing that drives me crazy about the Stock launcher is the lack of backgrounds for the icons. I like all my icons to feel somewhat uniform. I know the LG Launcher supports themes (basically icon packs)... but the Verizon model has this ripped out. I know it is accessible through some song and dance but the icon packs were pretty bare, only like 20 icons to cover the basics. Some custom packs have more but still barely cover the grand scheme of play store apps.
Overall good find though. I actually really like Action launcher 2 and run it on my tablets but I am unsure about on a smaller device I intend to use with 1 hand. I know you can setup swipes to pull open the drawer. At least we have options. I wonder if this happens on other devices, or just LG?
Very interesting to see that Lollipop based launchers stagger. Although KitKat was the best Android experience I ever had. Lollipop is fun but on the LG (or other skinned devices) the change is miniscule. KitKat ran like a beast on the G2 but started having problems when it upgraded to Lollipop.
I use KISS Launcher. No framerate loss there.
