A few weeks experience and I'm really split - Honor View 10 Guides, News, & Discussion

So I've been using my phone a few weeks now. The first handset I exchanged as it had a stuck pixel near the centre of the screen. The replacement was ok, the screen isn't perfect, but it's definitely acceptable.
I feel really split on the phone. On the one hand, I really like the hardware. The phone is well constructed, feels solid, no glass back. A headphone jack is a big plus. The camera is fine for the price and more. Also, I do like many aspects of EMUI as it utilizes similar customizations to LG.
However, the phone is starting to annoy me on a regular basis. Most notably issues with notifications, widgets and Bluetooth. All things that appear to dog Huawei/Honor phones to one degree or another. Thing is I rely on those three day in, day out.
I'm not fussed about gaming ability or adding filters to photos. I just want the (Android) basics done right. Not too much to ask is it.
The question is how long do I wait to see if they sort any of these issues. Sure, I could email or Facebook message them, but I'm certain the reply will involve clearing the cache, resetting the phone etc. If I send it in for 'repair' I doubt it would come back any different.
As firmware updates appear to be a lower priority than many OEMs I'm not hopeful. As the phone has been out a few months now in a number of territories I would have expected some dedicated ROM development by now. Perhaps that was a little optimistic.
Rooting looks like a necessity in the short term. Just to see if I can fix the notifications and widgets.
Longer term, well due to my lack of faith I'm going to keep an eye on the market. Last year I tried both the G6 and the 5T. The former was returned because the screen was uneven, with a dark patch in the middle. Also, I just didn't like it enough. The 5T, while perfect in many ways, gave me headaches. Whether that was a PWM or OLED thing I couldn't say. I don't suffer using PWM laptop screens, so it I guess it was the vibrancy or something else. Anyway, OLED screens are off my list. Shame as I really like using my Samsung Tab A which is a standard LED and would buy a Samsung phone if they hadn't had all switched screen tech now.
I kinda hope I can find solutions to the phone's issues. Simply because I don't think I'll find a better 'bang for my buck'. Just a question on how long I'm prepared to give it.

I leapt on this thread previously, so I've outlined the issues previously. However, I'll provide more detail here.
Notifications - Initially a proportion of notifications were not coming through. This appeared to be sorted by taking the apps in question out of automatic control. However, clearly some notifications get delayed, This is most noticeable when the phone has entered the 'doze' zone as I like to call it. If the phone is left idle for a long period, then little or no app notifications will appear. So you'll find first thing in the morning a bunch of stuff coming through when you start using the phone.
Then theres's the sounds, I've found unless the app has a specific option to select the notification sound, you'll just get the phone's default one i.e. Whatever you've chosen. This is a problem with things such as Sky or BBC Breaking News alerts. Both apps have dedicated sound alerts, neither provide the ability to choose. So this means it's impossible to audibly tell what an alert is, unless you can specify the alert sound in-app. A nuisance when you are busy or out and about.
I have tried to resolve this by installing the app NotifiCon. The app provides notification sound customisation on an app by app basis. While it initially appeared to work, there was a problem. While it was fine when the phone was unlocked and being used, the selected alert would be heard. When locked, only the phone's default sound would play. That is until you unlock the phone, then you'd get the one you specified in the app! Not quite what you'd want. I do need to get back to the dev to report my findings. He might be able to resolve it. However, I should have to be seeking third-party solutions to a very basic function.
Widgets - EMUI based phones appear to have a real issue with scrollable widgets. In my checking on the net, I've read countless reports on XDA, other forums and Facebook. Again, I've found my news apps to be the worst affected. Widgets either don't function or get stuck. The only workaround is to use Nova launcher and flip the phone into landscape which supposedly indirectly forces them to update. Even that is somewhat hit or miss. I feel sorry for those that rely on a calendar and other widgets that provide time-sensitive functions. Once again, this is basic functionality.
Bluetooth - I stream a good couple of hours a day. I use Android music server software Muzecast and listen to a number of podcasts. So I want Bluetooth to be a smooth as possible. Alas, I've found, like the OP in the thread I mentioned above, there's something not right with View 10. Speakers will randomly lose the ability to play/pause and, if the speaker supports it, skip tracks etc. Note - volume control isn't affected. From my experience, I cannot pinpoint what causes this. Again, this might not be too much of a bind if your speaker is next to you on the desk. However, I can see this would be a huge problem with headphones or in-car.
The second problem, I've noticed a CD skip like sound affecting playback. It's not frequent but you will spot it. Also, the sound can get garbled for a second, this is quite jarring when it happens.
Finally, the connection is hit and miss. My main go-to portable speaker has trouble hooking up with the phone. Often it will mean toggling Bluetooth off and on in the settings. This contrasts with my soundbar which works first time, every time. However, this creates another issue. If I'm playing music on my portable speaker and the phone is in range of the soundbar, it automatically switches to the later! Umm. . . That's surely not right, since there's no setting to prioritize which device playback should be through. It was so frustrating that I unpaired the soundbar and if I want to listen with it I use an old tablet instead.
So there you go. I'm certain these are in the main cross-device issues which are down to EMUI. The specific Bluetooth problems may be a quirk of the View 10, but for the rest, you can find plenty of evidence across the web. Huawei appears to be paying lip service or just ignoring them while quickly bringing the next handset to market. Disappointing.

No, I'm not, as you'll see from above.

Do one thing. Go to Settings-> Battery -> Launch and select the apps manually that you require for notification. Monitor and provide the results to us.

Was the first thing I did. Solved a lack of notifications but has zero effect on the delayed.

While I was checking on the status of the exchanged phone with my retailer (John Lewis in the UK), they let me know I actually had a 35 day return window if I wasn't happy. Something I wasn't aware of.
So after having a long conversation with one of their tech guys (who actually knew his stuff!), I did some further research.. Now I'm even more certain that these are EMUI problems across the board.
Indeed, if I'd spent top dollar on a flagship Huawei unit I'd be extremely annoyed. but TBH I'm just disappointed. Decent hardware and tons of potential hobbled by over zealous battery/power management and some suspect wireless chips.
Having read today about Huawei removing bootloader unlocking for new devices, just confirms I've made the right decision in returning the View 10. Seems like they won't fix problems and in the future they won't let you fix them yourselves. That's a very poor move.

The Dark Side...

I need help. I spent a week on vacation in Ireland and my little Ralphie let me down. I blush as I write this, but I was actually thinking about the dark side; …the fruit whose name we shall not mention. Talk me off the ledge.
Here is what happened.
I was on the 6 hour flight and decided to play with the phone a bit out of boredom. It was locked up.
No problem soft reset. Continued to lock-up.
No problem, PIM Backup, Hard reset. Then the keyboard would not switch to ABC from 123.
No problem, switch to another SIP. It would hold the change; it kept switching back to the ROM default. No problem, just use the hardware keyboard. A couple of great days in Ireland and it was time to take a quick phone pic to send home. Camera would not work; missed the moment. Fiddled with it a bit, could not get it to work.
No problem, hard reset and try again. Camera works now, keyboard seems to have fixed itself, but phone turns off randomly.
No problem, flash another ROM I have on my storage card. Everything works now except the phone. It has a signal for 5 minutes, then no signal for 5 minutes, over and over.
No problem, switch to manual network selection, could not access the settings.
No problem, hard reset. Works fine now. Ready to take a quick picture at a golf outing where I did not lug my Nikon around. Phone has turned itself off again, missed the moment. Time to surf up some quick directions, IE locks-up.
No Problem, switch to Opera, takes forever to load, my sister already has the directions on her damn iPhone before opera even loads. Crap ..my sister of all people.
So almost every time my cool phone was called into service, it let me down. This was an unusual run, but I spent more time fixing my phone than using it. In 7 days, 2 ROMS, 3 hard resets and more soft resets than I can count. Back home and it’s time to flash a new ROM. I am not defecting and certainly don’t want to open the “just go buy your damn iPhone” discussion: I’m just venting a bit. It just occurred to me that having a ton of great features that only work sometimes, is almost like not having them at all.
I’ll be quiet now.

Here is the advice - keep this great phone, but don't use any of the cooked ROMs, just use the latest official HTC WWE ROM (in combo with 1.12.25.19 radio) - no bugs at all. Every single feature works like a charm - camera, GPS, keyboard, hardware keyboard, Opera, messaging etc. I have never ever seen any bug with that ROM, and I'm using it extensively for months. Cheers
Well, the HTC WWE 5.05.405.1 stock ROM is not bug free but it certainly exhibits considerably less problems.
I always keep the stock NBH on my SD Card on the off-chance that I need to fall back. Now that I have gotten into the habit of compiling my own ROM using the 6.1.21051 kitchen, I've not run into a need to use it - but it's always there just in case, like Linus van Pelt's security blanket.

That's interesting. What bugs have you found so far? I cannot recall any of them, at least I'm sure that there are no serious problems. And I'm using all the features - so called "power user".
Most of these items are easily addressed with some tweak or other and some of the issues are carrier compatibility related, so all-in-all it's as stable a ROM as one can possibly expect. A few I've experienced:
- Dropped calls
- SMS not delivered
- Volume too low
- Some applications will not install
- In-call blanking of display; PITA when using VoiceMail
- Poor design for phone security lock; two different ways, should only be one with/without security code

I'm of the mindset that a company should not release a product that has not gone through a complete and formal quality assurance process. Further, if there are settings that are known to require tweaking or adjustments, an interface should contain these options to make it easy for the customer to change them.
I've heard every excuse in the book: can't be done, time to market, we'll fix it when the customer finds it, acceptable risk, it's a fault on the <insert partner names here> end of the code, blah blah blah; and quite honestly, I disagree with all of them as the message is the same:
Strive for mediocrity.
Please don't misunderstand my next statement, I welcome sites like XDA (and others) and my involvement here, hopefully proves that. That said, sites like XDA wouldn't be required if companies were more concerned about their customers, less concerned about share-holder dividends, and held the <insert partner names here> accountable for fixing issues promptly.

The first two are radio or carrier related, not ROM's fault. I have had these problems maybe 2 times in several months, but I know exactly who to blame - my carrier. I know that 'cause I work for them , and both times there was a major network overload. You're right about the volume - I've solved that first day I bought Raph, so I forgot it. However, I don't think it's a bug - they did it on purpose so that's the "feature". I think they wanted to avoid possibility of damaging hearing of customers and also distortion.
Regarding last 3 bugs, I have never had problems with installing apps, and I think there were about 1000 programs I've tried so far; I'm not using voice mail; Never had problems with security lock. All in all, this is the most stable (smart)phone I have ever used, and I've used many Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Siemens etc. phones.
No disagreement with the stability statement; and as my previous post indicated ... most issues can be addressed via a workaround (tweak). Just wanted to ensure that Doug was aware that it isn't going to be the perfect ROM either.
Seems like we have a common history for phone usage; I've been with Rogers longer than I've been married, and that's been a LONG time - no disrespect to my significant other, so i've gone through quite a few phones.

Bummer dude! After many many days of studying our current set of tools and the way they interact with things, I think there are a number of minor to medium severity issues that need to be addressed, I feel at least one or two of these could be lending help towards making a cooked rom unstable.
I hope to be able to re-code some of these tools soon (time, i wish i had more!)

Thanks for the replies. Sorry to dump, just a frustrating trip. It seems like a good idea to keep a stock ROM on my storage card. Maybe I'll use NATF 4.7 as my backup ROM. That seems to be the best balance of features and stability.
I realy like 6.5, but I am realy for it to have predicatable behavior.

I actually had a similar experience on a work trip (totally my fault). To cut a long story short, be careful about using pim.vol to restore yout pim info. I had pim.vol cooked into my rom, but I flashed a version that was a day or two old. I had new contacts, and instead of backing them up and restoring them with pimbackup, I over-wrote the cooked-in pim.vol with a fresh one from my sd card. Any time I touched the contact tab, it sent manila into a never-ending boot cycle (I did several hard. resets and a re-flash before I realized my error). It took me a while to figure out what I was screwing up, and was really frustrating.

The other party can't hear me clearly. No high-frequency

Hello everyone. We got 5 phones during the holidays from Microsoft retail store in LA. Right after we put our sim cards and start using our phones all of us realized that other party can't hear us clearly (as an example when I use my AT&T Tilt 2 other party can hear me way better). Looks like the microphone cuts all high-frequency sounds. Either it's a microphone problem (could be defected batch) or some other settings. We've already checked all possible settings with no success. Does anybody else having the same problem?
Other than that phone is really awesome!

TITAN - Lousy Sound Quality - Other Party Can't Hear . . .
I also have most people I call tell me I sound all distorted, (Or occasionally worse.) When I have someone call from my phone to a land line, to me the receiving sound has a buzz, almost tinitus, frequency shifts, & sometimes pulsing of the signal. Don't know if this might be the microphone, transmission, or what, although it seems consistent to my Titan, Occurrs in many places . . .
I'm surprised that no one else (except you) seem bothered. I tried unchecking the signal boost / loudness check, but to no avail.
Any suggestions? How is the sound quality you others are getting? Hope it is just a bad unit that I can swap Friday, or else I'll go back to my HTC AT&T Tilt-2, (the titl-2 is a much inferior phone, but with decent sound.)
My gilfriend constantly complains that she cant hear me too well. I think its because the phone is pretty long and the mic is right on the bottom. She can hear me better when i put the bottom part closer to my mouth. Its quiet annoying. I dont think its call quality but just bad positioning of the mic by htc.

UPDATE on bad / inferior Titan Sound Recepton:
Following a suggestion, I un-set (TURNED OFF) my attentive phone 'flip for speaker' option, so as to NOT automaticially go to speaker only when turning phone over & setting it down for hand free use during a call. This seemed to help some. (But a drag as this was a very nice touch - Most of my usage is in office / for business)
Per 'Cubanaso', above, I am also being more attentive to not holding the phone at the top where the antena may be, and also holding it lower so as to speak nearer the microphone on the bottom edge of the phone. (Why the heck did HTC place the main voice microphone so far out of the line of normal user speach? Maybe an attempt to save $ & go with only one microphone for both normal handheld usage, and also for face down on the table hands free usage? It would seem better to have two good mics, and via software use one for main speach, and the other for noise cancelling input, depending upon orientation.)
(This specialized custom grip is a pain because of aviding so much 'verbotten' contact with the phone - Can't touch the top off/on switch, nor the camera button, nor cover the microphone, nor where the micro-USB charger is attached. Too many restrictions, until new habits are learned . . .)
Anyhow, some more minor improvement, but still inferior sound quality for the person being called (whether they are on their own other cell or landline.)
BALMADOR: I bought mine at the AT&T corporate store on Main St. in White Plains NY. The sales kid, and contract, both promised a 30 day return period.
I am surprised that, of the (presumably) thousands of Titans out there, there are so few complaints about sound quality. Maybe I / we just have the rare problem ? ? ?
Any other insight from HTC, Google, or other web sites, etc.??? (I already checked WPCentral.com, and nothing more there . . .)
There are a few other problems, although not as major as this:
- Some phone numbers within given contacts (entered in outlook 10/ exchange 10) do not display on the the Titan. Seems to be 'Car', and others . . .
- Want access to the file storage space to set up directory structure for downloaded files (like the windows subdirectory structure & access), rather than just dump them into a single place managed by the system, without any identifiers other than the file name.
- The sync & skydrive of files seems random &/or flakey - We do not have the time to debug this.
- The HTC / AT&T issue standard documentation is superficial. (Also there is no WIKI, or no easy to access WIKI yet on XDA Developers, or I can't find it . . . Suggestions ? ? ?)
- Finally, Office Mobile seems generally flakey. For example, - Seems impossible to read & edit any file formats prior to office 2010, - Very difficult in Excel to highlight and drag a several cells, - can't figure out how to copy & paste reliably, etc., etc. . . .
Summary - I want to like & keep the Titan (another unit) so I am still inclined to try an exchange, or return the phone. Does anyone else have any further suggetions? (Maybe wait & try the Lumina 800 some day - What system will that be on, Verizon or AT&T ? ? ?)

I'm considering this as well as my titan is muffled on caller's end on about half of the calls to an unacceptable level.

Update re Sound Issue - Exchanged Unit : - )
Total fustration, so yesterday I went back to the AT&T corporate store (where I had upgraded from the Titl-2 to the Titan) and traded the Titan in for a new unit.
The trade in transaction took an hour ++, because the staff, although very friendly, cooperative and sincere, had no experience with the Titan (and I have a lot on my phone.) The store did not have or was missing the bluetooth dongle needed for content transfer, etc, etc, etc . . . But we got it done, thanks to my Exchange for Outlook, and e-mail for a few business photos, etc.
Anyhow, after 24 hours, it seems to be night and day on the sound issue - Extremely good, (except in very noisy environments); very loud both ends, better / tolerable connections in a few fringe areas where I had trouble with old Titl-2, No complaints on early test calls, etc, etc. I'll update y'all after several more days of experience . . .
So, Status Quo:
- My Titan is a very good phone (only) and decent electronic rolodex, with pretty good mapping / traffic / gps.
But:
- Lots of nagging ??software?? issues, some mentioned in prior post above. These problems seem like quality control programming bugs which should not have gotten through, and should be easy to fix. (Hope so as I really like this phone for my heavy business use!) More to follow.
HELP:
- How about a WIKI page for the Titan P139100 to organize the list of defects needing improvement, and most important, to supplement the superficial HTC / AT&T documentation, user guides? (lots of these problems may be mere lack of information & training for us users . . .)
I've tried to set up the WIKI page, with no luck. Maybe one of you with more experience can either get it started, or private message me with a little guidance . . .

I appreciate your feedback and it is encouraging to know that another handset might fix my issue (call quality) with the device. thanks! Think I might try to swap out for another unit when my local store gets more in
OTOH, I don't understand your transfer issues. Do you not have all of your photos and music synced with Zune? also do you have a live account where all of your contacts and calendar is saved?
I don't use Exchange server so maybe it's different but I walked into a store and swapped devices last week (Focus S) and stood there and reset (wiped out) my phone, typed my live account on the new device and walked out of there with all of my contacts calendars and email on the new phone instantly. plugged it into Zune when I got home and had photos and music back as well.
Went online to Windowsphone.com and clicked on all the apps I had previously installed and they too were put back on the phone
For everybody who having problem with the microphone.. I just spoke to HTC Hardware Department. They even not aware of this problem. Please call them and let them know. So at lease they will add this to the known issue list. Their phone # is: (866) 449-8358
For what it's worth, I just got my phone this past weekend. I've only had a few calls so far and no complaints from anyone. I have asked everyone I talked to if they could hear me okay and there was no problem.
I bought mine from a large retailer which hopefully means they go through a lot of Titans and I got a good one.
I did play a video from GoPro today and when I max'd the volume, it was distorted and had static. Haven't had the problem with other vid's so I am assuming it was the vid and not the speaker on the phone.
Decent phone. I was about to blow up when I realized that Outlook Sync was gone but after playing with it for a few hours, I was able to get the Windows Live connector to do it's thing for me. Not 100% happy but pretty close.

I have the same problem. I love the titan, but I have to fix this issue (or return the phone) for the sake of my relationship and work.
It seems as if the noise cancellation software is dumbing down the highs of my voice (it sounds like I am underwater). I haven't experience this problem when using Tango to video chat. I've also read that the problem doesn't exist while recording a video. Just a heads up, people have been posting about this issue in the wpcentral forums. I'm new to the forum, so I can't post links.

Please put your comments as well. We need HTC's attention to this problem. Now we almost sure that it's not a mic problem (thanks to TANGO). Somehow dialer/phone software (noise cancellation or coding or any other filtering) and may be camera's part are not performing as needed on some units. And it should be fixed or patched.
Just a thought that might help with diagnosing the problem. I have a wired hands free headset (don't like any of the bluetooth devices from inexpensive to way over priced) and if you think it's the microphone or software for noise reduction is the problem, I bet you could try a wired headset and see it the trouble persists. If so, I would go get a replacement phone.
Just a thought.
Can someone who doesn't experiencing a "muffled" effect send me a private message with his phone # so we can make a couple test calls? That way we can really compare and make a better statement.
I've bought a titan for my wife, and had these same mic issues, she sounds muffled, recessed, underwater, got her a plantronics 975, and call quality went from bad, to terific.
Something is definately up with the mic/software on these things. I got the UK version from Clove.
I've since bought a second device for myself, and call quality is horrible, lots of chopping out, bad signal, bad reception. I was later told by my service provider, its a problem with their HSPA network, and the TITAN was not tested on it and may not be properly supported, i swithced off the 3g radio and sure enough all my problems went away, perfect call quality and reception, but no 4g? Sucks. They say they need to do patches on their network before the phone will work properly. But that seems to be a spereate issues, the mic stuff defiantely needs to be addressed. or we all use bluetooth!

Maybe I should factor in my location to the lack of problems with my phones audio quality. I live in the Dallas area, home of AT&T, and it's possible the network has been upgraded here and when I travel outside of this area, the quality will suffer as many of you have reported. This could be why some are not having troubles and others are.

I also use an iPhone 4S as a back up phone and it has no problems at all. I've also had no IP adress conflicts so that should not be a problem. This is extremely irritating as it makes using the phone a total pain.
Another thing is that I have created a folder on my home screen and whenever I open it, an annoying tone goes "Folder Open". I looked in Accessibility and couldn't figure out how to turn it off. Please help.
Also, I noticed that on my Galaxy S III when I listen to my music I hear a slight static buzz every now and then. Haven't got this phone yet, i'm getting mine today.
But from what you've said, it sounds like it could be a few things including your phone.
First tho, check the stuff you can fix yourself.
Firstly, try not to compare any android phone to an iphone, they're not the same and have different qualities and weaknesses, the iphone in comparison to this beast is a pipsqueak.
About your connectivity, completely remove your APN and put them back in manually.
Perform a battery pull at least once a day.
Is your sim card a new one or old? You could possibly query that too.
250MB is nothing by the way, not sure how you managed it but even on an iphone that's not a lot, i can easily use 500MB just by allowing my phone to sync normal stuff, i'd personally recommend a gig as a minimum, unless you don't mind actively managing your internet habits and you frequently switch off data altogether.
As for your wifi, pull all cables on your router and start afresh, once everything is back together, connect using your phone and perform a speed test using the speedtest.net app, see what your getting, some apps don't use the speed that's available and that's a limitation of the app and not the phone or connection.
Also regarding your apps, either remove them or remove the data associated with them and start over.
As for the headphones, they're sh** so try some others.
Not sure about the voice over, maybe check settings and see what you can find.
If all this doesn't help then try a factory reset and see if your still having a problem.
Like i said i don't have this phone yet so i don't have too much hands on experience but give this little lot a whirl and see how it goes, if nothing helps then maybe return it if your unsatisfied.
Personally I'll be rooting my SGS3 on day one, right after i've tested to see if everything works of course.

This is going to sound stupid but what is an APN? I googled it and it came up with 'Access Point Name'. Is that what you mean?
My SIM card is a Micro-Sim and was in my old iPhone 4S before so it is not brand new.
I understand 250 MB is nothing but I'm being totally honest on my old phone it was really hard to blow it. I asked another guy and he said that Facebook for Android loads the images full size so I'm not 100% sure. It's just a bit of a shock since on iOS it used such little data.
Also, I'm not using the standard headphones. I'm using Audio Technica Solid Bass so I'm sure it's not a problem with that. But please try and help me with this issue. I need music for studying, transport, school etc.
I really want to keep the SIII. The big screen is really nice and the customisation of the home screen is great along with the widgets. Just these issues troubling me.
**EDIT: Also another issue. Sometimes when I go to the Play Store it'll attempt to load and display the page with "Connection timed out." **

YES its your network .

Factory reset and return phone to seller .

both are bought from a different countries .. .
Both suffer from an extremely poor and slow internet . ..
it's "IMPOSSIBLE" for me to opan Google Play with no wifi . ..
it will time out if I try that with 3G network .. on both devices ..
tried soft reset + hard reset + rom flash ..
nothing worked .. .
"iPhone is soooooooooo much better than androind ..
this is my (3rd) time now ..
with S1, my phone suffered from instant disconnection from the internet
S2, people always get "this phone is out of service" when calling me
and now the lovely S3, which takes 2-3 minutes just to load google's default page ...

Hello there.
I'm having problems with my Android device and I'm very frustrated with it so far...
My device is a Motorola Moto G. I've updated it to the latest Android version available (4.4.2), however, I'm experiencing some serious problems; the most important atm is the alarm.
I am using the volume button to snooze the alarm, because imho it's more convenient. However, yesterday the volume button just didn't work for some reason. I had to unlock the screen for it to work, then it started working again with the screen locked. Today the same thing happened, I had to unlock the screen to snooze the alarm using the volume button, then I could snooze it again without unlocking, however, it just 'stopped' by itself, I don't know if the volume button somehow turned the alarm off. I didn't even touch the screen, so it's a bug or something. I've always been using a cell/smartphone to wake up and never had any problem.
Also, this device freezes a lot and I've never experienced that before in any cell/smartphone. It also seems the device must be turned on for the alarm to work; it's not that important for me, but still a 'downgrade' from my previous device. Another thing that really annoys me is that you can't even change the volume without playing the sounds... if you want to set a very loud volume in the middle of the night there's no way other than waking everybody up. Additionally, I would like to be able to somehow record a call, but none of the apps works with this device.
I don't think the alarm problem is a hardware fail or defective device, it seems to me the software is somehow bugged. There's no Cyanogenmod for this device yet (mine is dual chip) and even if it were available, It seems some apps doesn't work with it (like Sygic).
I don't know how I should proceed and I apologize in advance if my question is too 'basic' for a developers forum, but I didn't want to post on the other popular 'user' forums because I've seem many threads where the moderators were just talking nonsense proving that they don't even know how to turn on an Android device, including the extreme case of a newbie asking about some permissions who was somewhat 'burned at the stake' by the moderators and veteran members while he was right all the time, so if the moderators and veterans don't have a clue on what's an Android device I'm surely not reliant to post there. On the other hand all the (/most) posts here on XDA Devs always get correct and helpful replies.
I don't know if I should try downgrading the OS to 4.3 or if there's something else I could try. I don't know if it's possible that the latest update was somehow 'badly flashed'. It doesn't seem very likely to me.
Any help is appreciated.

try downgrading to 4.3 ,apparently the 4.4 update has many issues.
for changing the volume download a proper sound management app.

However, after Googling and contacting motorola, it seems there's no way of downgrading (without rooting the device) .
The alarm problem is getting worse, today for some reason when the alarm was ringing, instead of the alarm screen, the default lock screen appeared, the volume buttons didn't work also, so there was no way to snooze the alarm, I had to turn it off in the configs and get out the bed like 1 hour earlier than usual.
Isn't it possible that the problem is some kind of flashing fail when I've updated the OS? I highly doubt everyone is having this problem... Isn't there a way of reinstalling the OS?
Also, the hardware isn't very good. It seems of good quality in appearance but after only a couple of months the battery isn't lasting as it used to. motorola support is simply horrendous in my country, there's no support at all. I don't even know why there's a warranty if in practice that means absolutely nothing.
I'm thinking about buying an alarm clock, preferably a german-made one that I can trust... It's outrageous though. I never thought I would need an alarm clock again.
Worst purchase ever. I'm thinking about getting back my cheapo Samsung Galaxy Pocket Plus that I gave away. It wasn't as comfortable as this motorola but it surely did work and the apps were much better, I thought they were all standard Android apps but it ended up they are from Samsung, in 99% of the cases you can long hold the stuff to pop a menu of actions, for example, hold a contact for a menu on editing/deleting/etc. hold a number on a message for a menu on adding-contact/adding-number-to-contact/etc. It was very intuitive and straightforward. The apps in this motorola are exactly the opposite, holding the finger on stuff never do anything and most times not even tapping stuff does anything. It's a pain to use its cumbersome and confusing interface. Only for adding a simple contact I take more than 10 times the time I've used to take to add a contact on my cheapo Samsung phone.
I thought the phone would be good specially in terms of software because motorola is "a Google company" but I was completely wrong. It seems Google is going to sell motorola, perhaps not even they were believing the products were good after all. In any case, I'm never buying motorola again.
Also, there are lots of topics on the poor quality/limitations of stock Android apps and the unanimous solution is to install better apps from Google Play, in the end it's quite a mess because most/some stock apps can't be disabled and their services will continue to run, along with some others from 3rd party that should in fact substitute them. If the stock apps are so poor, there should be a way to completely disable them all imho, or even better, perhaps they could just ship high-quality opensource apps instead of the terrible stock ones.
So far I'm very frustrated. If I could get my money back I would surely get a Blackberry or Samsung device. I don't really care about games and it seems that's what made android so popular, the cornucopia of awful (seriously, 99% of the games on Google Play are of extremely bad quality) games full of sneaky ads and that needs every permission possible to run. That permission thing is another one that doesn't really works. It should work but most apps ask for a lot of permissions that doesn't make any sense and the users don't seem to care much.

I'm just posting here to let you know that I've unlocked the bootloader, downgraded to 4.3 and now the thing works perfectly. Plus I've discovered the battery problem AND a poor signal AND cal recording not working were because of the faulty update also! I must inform also that it seems the problem only occurs in dual chip versions and I've already downgraded the system for a friend of mine who was having the same problems, so, if you have the dual chip version, please don't upgrade it to kitkat! You'll get a nonworking OS and will be forced to ditch your warranty to use your phone in a sane way again. It seems the support for the dual chip version was dropped already because the single chip one (which was usable after the update) have received other updates after 4.4 to fix minor bugs, but the dual chip which is totally broken and unusable didn't receive any.
Having to circumvent the normal conditions and lose your warranty to have an usable device proves that motorola (and google by consequence) have the responsibility of a kid.
The downgrade didn't fix the problem with browsing files from the computer though, for that specific problem I'm going to open another thread as it seems android related.
In general the Android community is not very good, it's full of what I suppose are kids, wanting to help but only disrupting any chance to solve the issue. The IRC channel is specially unhelpful. Unless your question is "where do I plug the other end of the cable" or "how do I turn on my device" chances are you won't get any actual help and by the answers you can see the people there don't have a clue on anything. Probably it's full of <10yo kids. At least in mental terms . The XDA however, seems to be an exception, actually standing out from the lots of unhelpful forums and chats out there. In this topic I didn't receive many replies, but it's better this than receiving a lot of moronic replies like I would have received in IRC or other forums.

Here's a strange issue for you with GPS...

I don't know how many more times my desk will survive due to me banging my head against it...
It's a long story which I will cut short; we have bought a large number of cheap handsets (Nuu A3L, spec sheet here: https://www.devicespecifications.com/en/model/4fc6428b ) and they're using Sygic truck as their navigation tool.
We straight away ran into some major issues, the main one being with Sygic/GPS. The devices would begin navigating but would then start to lose GPS signal and start bouncing around, sometimes they would recover (only to do the same thing again a few minutes later) and other times they would just lose GPS connectivity entirely and would lock up for 10+ minutes.
After seeing how poorly the application ran on these devices I had a hunch that the application was hogging every last drop of available system resource. I removed as much bloat from the application as possible, I turned off the 3D map (2D is much more fluid), turned off all POI, turned off traffic updates etc and it appeared to resolve the issue. I drove for 30 minutes with two devices side-by-side, the default one continued with its horrid GPS loss while the customised one worked fine.
A few people have taken these out today to test, but are apparently having the same issues regardless of the changes that I made.
I'm now at a loss and struggling to work out what else can be done to help. They're running Airwatch and we can push remote changes out at any time, so I am at the mercy of those more knowledgeable than I (you).
If anybody has a decent suggestion then you win a free balloon.

Let me be clear that I never played with sygix enough to speak directly about it. You may have already tried the things I'm brainstorming here.
I'm not clear as to why you didn't just load a different mapping app on these? There certainly are a lot of them.
What level of connectivity are they using? If you are on GSM or 3G, downloading map information as the vehicle moves around, that could slow things down to a crawl. Using an app that doesn't have to work this way could be a solution.
I noticed that the phone has a 500ish MHz clock speed and just 1 GB of RAM. As you've discovered, every layer of complexity in the mapping will slow it down further.
Something like Tom-tom was written to run on a lot less hardware. That's the kind of thing that I'd look for. I believe that Here is also made for very low end hardware.
Not sure if it helps, but at least it's a path worth looking at.
