[Q] Dual GPS - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

What about the dual channel GPS?
Do you feel any differences comparing to your previous phone?

A few quick tests over the past day or so have shown it to be a major step up from my Oneplus6 and the compass has been spot on

Dual frequency GPS was a consideration to my purchase of this phone - hoping for great things, completely unknown to reality.
I work in the CBD and drive out of an underground car park. With my Samsung S8 and later a work provided Motorola g5s Plus it took a small but considerable amount of time for Google Maps to pick up where I was exactly - sometimes would pick me up in another street, adjusting until it got its lock on me.
Using the Mate 20 Pro, OMG.... I am stoked! Just as I'm coming out of the car park (maybe 2 or so metres before actual sight of sky) Google Maps has an accurate pin of where I am. This invaluable (apart from Maps telling me best way home traffic wise immediately) as I use a Vehicle Log Book which obviously relies on GPS as well. Normally i've been at least 1km away before the Log Book app recognised I was actually driving in the CBD.
Absolutely love this dual frequency GPS as I assume this is what has made picking up my location in CBD enormously quicker.

Can you give us an update on your sentiment towards the GPS accuracy and precision? I’m very curious if you have to contend with a lot of skyscrapers, like in Manhattan New York. I have also been at intersections in Japan where it instead of a four way intersection you’ll have an eight way intersection and if you don’t have absolute accuracy with your GPS you will go down the wrong road. What are your thoughts?

I watched the video, sorry to say (and also sad to know) that dual GPS is not yet enabled. you need to see a single GPS satellite outputting two frequencies namely L1 and L5 (CF), or to put it in another way, the app should show two similar IDs for the respective GNSS.
I remember someone saying that they did see L5/E5 enabled in 9.0.0.171.
If there is a reliability/lock improvement via Google Maps, it's because of 9.0.0.146 update.
L5/E5 features and benefits over L1:
1) Improved ionospheric correction
2) Signal redundancy
3) Improved signal accuracy
4) Improved interference rejection
5) L5 is, to date, the most advanced civilian GPS signal
6) It transmits at a higher power than current civil GPS signals --> RELIABILITY
7) Has a wider bandwidth: Its lower frequency may also enhance reception for indoor users

Dual frequency GPS test
I used this app for testing the dual frequency GPS:
Geo++ RINEX Logger
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.geopp.rinexlogger
and apparently it shows the GPS module to synch with:
GPS L5
GALILEO E5a
:good:

I tried this on 146, results are the same. But I still feel Dual GPS is not enabled fully.
notice that there is not even a single Multipath L5/E5 lock although they are detected. Red bars should appear for all four of them. Also we need to wait for another 4-5 years to be able to see ~30 cm accuracy because currently a handful of satellites are offering L5/E5 and by 2022 it is predicted to rise to ~24 satellites.
btw cycle slips gives an estimate of GPS accuracy because L5 signal power is around 3dB more than L1 and chances of phase lock disconnections due to cloud/rain/trees/buildings etc will be relatively less as compared to L1.
Multipath is to do with GPS reliability: if you are getting quick GPS locks inside your house while you are away from window, then you must be thanking L5 multipath signals..
Also, trade-off for accuracy is reliability, not the other way round: this means that the good will not get that better but, importantly, the bad will not get worse..
Cycle Slips: https://www.e-education.psu.edu/geog862/node/1728
Multipath: https://www.e-education.psu.edu/geog862/node/1721

Probably in my case the app doesn't detect multipath just because I'm currently in a house located in a flat country with open sky and no buildings higher than 6 meters and nearer than 50 meters in the surroundings.

actually that should have been the case since multipath is situational
but L1 Multipath is functioning?
could someone with 171 test GPS because I read somewhere that GPSTest app is showing both L1 and L5 CF for some of the GNSSs in 171.

I also read Sean Barbeau’s article on dual frequency GPS with great anticipation. From all indications, dual frequency GPS on smart phones from a real world USE perspective has been a total bust to date. Although companies like Xiaomi and Huawei trumpeted this as a great achievement, no one has realized any practical decimeter-level accuracy benefit. To be fair, there are possibly faster lock times reported but not substantiated..
What an unfortunate situation. I double checked the Xiaomi forums to ensure there has not been any tremendous development as far as 30 cm accuracy. After all, they’ve had nearly a year to work out any kinks. As of this date there has not been anything close to 30 cm accuracy substantiated.

It looks awesome! The only thing I see that I don't like is the battery. "Up to 100 hours standby time" is only 4 days without any use at all... so more than likely, it'll be a "charge every day" appliance, again.

Yeah the jury is still out on that one, good thing is they're taking suggestions on for final design. I drive a van all day so handsfree answering etc is great and when I'm delivering shopping to the 17th floor it's great to have a phone with me. Only time will tell but funding is going great.

I'll add both to my smartwatch comparison website when they officially release, with all the specs and stuff.
My thing is they are evading any question about the thickness, which means it will probably be THICK. Their videos seem to confirm that.
This looks very promising. Videos of physical units is great, I believe they are good on their promise. At $200, sure, I've backed a developers unit. I'll report back in October =P

Just to reply to your question in that other thread (makes no sense for me to register in there just for that) - why Pebble got 10M while Omate only at 350k? Pebble was an early bird and had a great marketing. I personally use MetaWatch (STRATA and FRAME) and can't imagine going through a day without a smart watch since my Note 2 stays in my pocket and I get all my notifications right on my wrist (thanks to Augments Pro app), I never miss calls anymore, I can control my UE Boom speaker while in the pool under water from my watch, and so on MetaWatch was one of the first out of the door, but poor marketing and software support brought it down. On the other hand Pebble had a brilliant marketing technique, raised a lot of money, sold a lot of units which enables them to hire more software developers or enjoy benefits of free apps developed by others. What came next? Agent SmartWatch (wireless charging), Kreyos Meteor (gesture control), HOT Smartwatch (talking by placing your hand to your ear), and so on. Now market is saturated with all kinds of smartwatches, people are getting confused. Oh, and on top of that - on Sept 4th Samsung will announce Gear (and that is confirmed by Samsung, also with Note 3 introduction). Plus, quite possible on Sept 10th Apple could announce iWatch.
Omate kickstarter campaign has a very bad timing being right in the middle of all these smartwatch announcements. Plain and simple. Especially anticipation of Samsung Gear which took away a lot of momentum from Omate.
But with all that said, I think the idea of Omate is fantastic. There is no room for a phone when you go to the gym or biking or active outdoors. That would be a perfect solution to take out sim card from your phone and load into a watch while leaving my Note 2 at home. Or continue using it tethered at work where it will function as a regular smart watch.
One thing I'm confused, on their kickstarter page they say "3G mono" while you have it listed in your post as 3G CDMA. I'm on Verizon, and do need CDMA. Hopefully it will support it.

Is the THL W8S Worth Buying?

Hi,

I own a THL W8s because I would like to test a dual sim device. I used to utilize a Samsung S4 and an iPhone 5 but I think the W8s is very good value for money as you pay less than half the price for the other devices. The only thing is when you want to flash another ROM, you will have to spend some time for finding one.

I'll second the vote of confidence for this phone. The MTK6589T 1.5Ghz SoC is a good chip set that is pretty snappy and has good mltimedia capabilities. It also provides for great browsing ability too. This is one of my faves for the Mediatek SoC and the kernel version has been fairly stable on the devices that I have tested as well. I think you will be satisfied with your purchase providing you understand that Chinese goods can be qwerky at times. Good luck with her and enjoy!

I saw a website published a THL W8S ROM. Here: http://www.thlmobilestore.com/news/thl-w8s-firmware/
I don't know this firmware can or not be used.
I am using one.
First if you don't root it, than your GPS is useless.
Second: if you use for development, the logcat will be full of warning messages, bug to an Android 4.2.1 bug.
Third: it is not for games, has low performance there.
It is good for:
browsing
stand by mode
basic, utility apps
The intermal memory is formatted as the aps has only 3.5Gb available.
Flashing a new ROM can lead to loose the NVRam content: serial number, imeis, mac address an so on.
We have different needs. For me the worse is the Android bug and they don't upgrade to 4.2.2 ... when 4.4 released already...
Using without root: no GPs and ads... is not for me

3.5Gb for apps. For me is enough now but the other 24 GB is used like the SD card, so the 32GB is like 4GB + 24GB SDCard...good or not, this is.
If you don't need GPS and not need Logcat for development, and don't wan to play 3D games at full resolution, speed, than is the best phone for his price.
Very nice screen, very high resolution.
Utility apps are working
Easy to root with Framaroot. Than set the EPO + gps.conf and you have a resonable gps first fix time too, still weak hardware and work work indoor, just out.
Photos: make with a special photo device with optical zoom and not with this phones, especially on low ligh conditions.
It has whatever Megapixel, but that is for resolution and not for quality.
At daily, sunny weather you can use it to post a picture to Facebook posting, but by far not the photograph quality. I don't use the camera, just tested 3 times. At night with street light full of noise the picture( low light condition)

From 4 core on this phone 2 is sleeping, almost always.
THIS PHONE ARE NOT FOR GAMES.
from 8 core you will have 6-7 sleeping, but you must pay the price for 8.
Smart idea to buyt a 32 core phone, to have 30 core sleeping
So many money thrown away why don't buy an Original S4? !

Actually, when I bought I was looking for " Samsung galaxy S4 alternative"
Now if you want you can search for "Samsung Galaxy note 3 alternative".
I would recommend this as a cheap phone, if you don't mind routing to have the GPS ( believe me you will need it at least twice in a year and never say "never". The gorila glass 3 is really nice. The Android 4..2.1 will be changed once and at 4.2.2 it isn't that bug, you can find here a custom rom with "... sony ericcson heart" for this phone. I have checked and that has other nice features for developers: GUI debugging.
For gaming take an original Note 3!
Usually it is used only 1 core at at around 500 MHz. The 4 core or 32 core is just an extra price, still lower than S4, but still unused.
Antutu will show exactly this:

I checked on the Internet for more information about this phone, the phone is very good, but size is a little big, samsung has a small size cheap mobile phone? (4.3 to 4.7 Inch)
I didn't find the right phone.

hi, i would like to ask, have you tried the set ringtone to specific contacts? I bought w8s 2 days ago, and my contact ringtone won't work. The default ringtone is still the one that "ring/play". I also tried using Ringo app, but only the text tone is successful. Ringing tone is still default ringing tone.. Another thing is the profile picture of the contacts does not show when they are calling.. but it shows on messaging.
Im just wondering if i might have missed something, or the phone's calling feature is defective.
thank you in advance...

[Q] Wifi extremly slow

Hi,
I have received my Nexus a couple days ago and have a serious issue with the Wifi speed.
It's connected with a link speed of 104Mbps and a "good" signal strength, but it
takes forever to completely load a website. In comparison I have an iPad Air and
a nexus 5 connected to the same AP and they work fine.
For example: to load a website such as seattletimes.com it takes 44 sec. until I see the
first content and once the content is there the tab is still loading for another minute(!).
On my Nexus 5 the whole page is loaded in less than 10secs.
If I connect the tablet to my Nexus 5 via the hotspot function, browsing works perfectly,
so it can't really be the wifi?
Any idea is appreciated!
Andreas
I also find that speed tests do not yield favorable results. My N5 receives the full 50 mbps from my router whereas the N9 seems to cap out at about 40 mbps.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium HD app
So no one else here experiences problems like these? I have yet to hit 50 mbps on my N9 while my N5 (on 5.0 as well) can hit it every time.
Yeah Wi-Fi seems to have issues. Anyone notice problems with Wi-Fi band? I set to 5ghz instead of auto but every time I reboot it ignores this and connects to 2.4ghz.
Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
I actually have set my 5 GHz to a separate SSID so I don't have that problem. I wish more people would chime in with speed tests...
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium HD app
Actually I can relate to that issue. I have both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz connections in my home and it's very slow on both networks, especially images take forever to load. I'm sure this is something Google can fix with an update, but it's definitely annoying for now. A simple speed test with Ookla shows nothing out of the ordinary though.
What build version is having the issue? What browser are you using? Try clearing data and cache on the browser you are using. Are there different SSIDs for the 2.4 and 5Ghz bands? What channels do you have selected for the 2.4 and 5Ghz band? Is channel bonding turned on? What are your results from SpeedTest (post the Nexus 5 and iPad results for comparison)?
I have two Nexus 9 tablets and none are experiencing any wifi issues. One of them is running the older build (LRX21L) and the other the newer one (LRX21Q). Just for you to know the only way I got LRX21Q was to do a manual flash with the system image. The OTA is most likely broken for most.

I'm currently on LRX21Q however I experienced this on the initial build as well. I'm using Chrome Beta, but the results are coming from the Ookla Speedtest app. There are 2 different SSIDs for the different bands, and I'm always connected to the 5 GHz band. I played around with the channels for the 5 GHz bands to no avail, so I'm back to auto.
What is channel bonding? My speed tests are as I described above (40 mbps on a 50 mbps connection).
It is also slow on the 2.4ghz band? Have you tried a factory reset? If a factory reset does not fix the issue you might have a defective wireless card or there is a bug in the wireless driver. There is probably a way to run a self test diagnostics on the wireless card, but I do not know of any such tool. Did you update to LRX21Q by the OTA or the full factory image?
Channel bonding works by combining neighboring wireless spectrum to increase your wireless bandwidth. On the 2.4ghz band, the default is 20mhz width. If you enable channel bonding it combines the 2 20mhz bands to create a 40mhz width. Thus increase your spectrum to more data. However, using this on the 2.4 ghz band is not recommended since it can cause interference to neighboring APs. Also there is very limited open spectrum. Mainly channel bonding is used in the 5ghz band since there is more open spectrum to use. By default 5ghz uses a 40mhz width, but newer routers (AC1750, AC1900, etc) have options to use 80mhz width.

What channels have you tried on the 2.4ghz band? There are only 3 non-overlapping channels that should be used. Try setting it to channel 1, 6, or 11. Keep the channel bonding set to 20mhz (that is if your router has that option). Hope this helps.

I don't know how to measure the actual speed on my device, but I do experience very obvious speed problems. The strangest thing is maybe that they're intermittent: sometimes apps respond just fine. And then all of a sudden it takes ages to load web pages, Wikipedia pages, refreshes of Facebook and e-mail. Most of the apps just take a long time, the default Gmail app usually conks out and says that "there's no connection". Even though the wifi dialogue says the connection is fine (quality "excellent" or something like that) and another android device, still on KitKat, has no problems loading the same pages & refreshing the email.
So there's definitely something weird.
But is it the device, or is it something in Lollipop? Because that other android device now wants me to update to Lollipop, but I'm a little hesitant to do that...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.zwanoo.android.speedtest
This app will be able to measure the internet speed on your device. It's best to know what your maximum theoretical ISP bandwidth is (mine is 50 mbps down/up). And be sure to test this app on multiple devices to see if you get consistent results on the N9.
I just updated to L21XR and the issue is still there.
Thanks for the tip. I will try.
But I won't get consistent results anyway, since the phenomenon is clearly intermittent. I tried it again just now: facebook was incredibly slow in showing pictures and the contents of articles. So was the browser when I tried to open the articles there.
I switched off the device and restarted it, and now all is smooth again. But in a little while it won't anymore.
It's as though there's some memory leak or congestion that builds up or something. Terribly annoying in such an expensive device.

The speed test app runs for a few seconds to ensure that it yields the correct maximum bandwidth. This will surely indicate whether you're downloading at maximum bandwidth. Yes it may be inconsistent between tests, but that's what we're trying to prove here.

I get really good wifi results. My N9 gets equal to what my Note 4 and wife's S5 gets. Are you still experiencing this problem?

you have got to be kidding me, now you kids are complaining about not getting a full 40M speed. seriously?!?!?! grow up with hook and receiver 300 baud dialup on a crappy serial interface, and then come back to me with your speed complaints. until then. the tech delivers something that did not exist when you were born 13 years ago.
some of you kids just make me laugh with your desire to buy tech, and then nitpick and pull it apart like you have the slightest idea of underlying tech advancements. oh no, I have screen bleed because I cranked up the brightness to max. oh no, I can't get my home WiFi connection at work. oh no, the plastic case feels plasticky. turn down the brightness, stay at home and buy a case.
as to your WiFi issues, change the damn channels on your router and stop letting your brother's pørñ addiction and neighbors WiFi signal collide on the same channel . geesh.

Relax there buddy. I have an N5 which outperforms the N9's Wi-Fi, and being an engineer, I'm trying to get to the root of the problem. The device should be more than capable of hitting my max bandwidth as my phone does.

I'm having similar issues, but not so much with speed (although occasionally yes). Often, I will notice my wifi connection shows the icon with an exclamation point over it. I suspect that it means that my wifi is connected but that my internet connection is not a 'good' one. It's not something I've seen on my Nexus 7 or my HTC One M8, both of which run stock KitKat presently.
I was hoping that the most recent Lollipop release would solve this but it seems that a couple posters above have not had their issue fixed.

Software (ease of use, features, etc)

When you hand your phone to granny to take a photo of you, can she get the job done? Rate this thread to express how you deem the Huawei Mate 9's camera software. A higher rating indicates that the software is easy to use, fast, uncluttered, and inclusive of advanced features for when you need them.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
i am a big fan of emui, there's not much more to say, great design, very smooth, many useful functions, app drawer is back, only thing: i miss the option to hide applications from the homescreen (drawer) like in earlyer emui versions.
and the theme variety is also very little for emui and it changes not much from the system ui, i hope there will be more soon.
the camera software was a bit confusing at the beginning, but now i get used to it and everything is clear now. i wish there would be some more modes like, landscape, snow, beach, night, firework and so on like on xperia devices.
and the hdr function is not very convincing, i don't notice andy difference between normal and hdr, normal photo looks a bit hdr, and hdr looks a bit hdr but nothing more...

LTE is also having MIMO nowadays ya...most mobile operators have deployed this to get more throughput.
Its a good UI but it can be better. It have some flaws as no double tap to wake, double tap to sleep, offscreen gestures.
The camera UI could be improved slightly as things like the zoom x doesn't change orientation when you use the phone in landscape rather than portrait.

I had this phone for almost half year and it was awesome. Big screen, smooth EMUI, perfect camera, performance really high. Only one bug this phone had, and seems only in my case. When I turned bluetooth screen freezes and you cant do anything, unless you reboot it with power button. Of course I set up a fingerprint unlock and then after phone turned on i had to input password (that i know which is it) and phone wouldn't accept it. That lead me to hard reset and frp unlock etc. After some research I found that that could happen to some phones that are unlocked from network carrier.
Also one cons of big phones is that whenever you go at the bar or restaurant everyone can see what you doing on your phone. So i went from Mate 9 to P10 Plus a small resize of phone
I like the EMUI, but i have a question about GPS. with other brand of the phone, i can enable location service based on the wifi or date, at the same time disable GPS. when using the map, i simply enble the GPS from the drop down menu. and disable it once i finished using the map. however, with Mate 9, i have to go to the setting to enable the GPS if using the map, and if i disable it via the drop down menu, then it also diable the location service. is there is a way around? basically i want permentally enable the location based on the wifi or data, but only tougle on of off GPS when using the map. thanks

Mate 20 pro and 20 has dual gps, someone tested gps accuracy?

Huawei kirin 980 created his own dual gps chip
It seems to be something better than broadcom.
GPS (L1 + L5 dual band) / AGPS / Glonass / BeiDou / Galileo (E1 + E5a dual band) / QZSS (L1 + L5 dual band).
Huawei mate 20 and mate 20 pro have dual gps.
Using GPSTest it seems Dual-frequency is still not in use. Maybe it is the same issue as the Xiaomi Mi 8 did when it was released.
See also https://medium.com/@sjbarbeau/dual-f...es-152b8826e1c
The most time my accuracy is about 4m. That`s not even better as on my Galaxy S7
So far I've not been particularly impressed with it's accuracy. My Mate 10 pro before that was very hit and miss as well. Granted, I live in a big city, but my wife's iPhone 7 has no such issues... Not Huawei's strong point it seems.
It says accuracy can reach up to 30 cm, which means lane level accuracy. Driving in Kuala Lumpur will be fun
It's as accurate as I need it to be and it's there when I need it.
4-5m is about as much as you realistically need IMHO (unless you're using it to program a cruise missile for a clinical strike).
If you cant find what you're looking for when you're within 4-5 metres then maybe you need to go to Specsavers (other opticians are available)

I agree. As much as I like it to be as accurate as possible, I'm on a consumer device paying consumer money.
The worst that usually happens to me is Google thinks I'm in the shop next door.
I can deal with that tbh and I have no desire for Huwaei (or any other manufacturer) to spend several million £/$ just to get my GPS down to my EXACT location.
The last thing we need is these phones being even more expensive
If it works better than my Note 9 that will be good enough. Can't even walk around city centres, it can't decide which way it's pointing or what street I am on haha. Android phones have never served me well for GPS. In a car they're fine though.
I have not seen improvet accuracy mentioned in meter but (subjectively) I get the opinion that it is better to nail my position even if I'm inside a house etc...
My gripe is the accuracy and precision when using the smartphone GPS in big cities with skyscrapers, particularly when walking. The blue dot on Google Maps will literally jump around 20 to 40 meters for no obvious reason. This has happened to me numerous times on Samsung and late model Huawei phones. .
Just last night I was in Manhattan, New York City. I came out of the museum and found myself in a freezing rain downpour. I used my Huawei Mate 9 to make a beeline towards the GPS indicated nearest subway station. Long story short, I spent 15 minutes going in circles as the blue dot kept changing locations. While GPS got me in the neighborhood it did not come close to nailing the location of the subway entrance. I still have to do frustrating excess walking & backtracking to find the subway entrance.
This has happened to me in EVERY city with skyscrapers that I’ve used GPS. Doubly frustrating when the Uber driver and I am very close… But not close enough to recognize we are near each other. And yes, I have “calibrated“ my compass multiple times. Have even refreshed A-GPS data. How about it Huawei? Samsung? Broadcom? What can be done about this? Buy a Garmin?

And not an external GPS.
So support should be better

Not true. The Mate 20 Pro still doesn't use L5 and E5 bands, therefore the phone has the same level of accuracy (up to 3-5 meters) like any other device, rather than 10-50 centimeters (something dual band GPS should be able to do).

142/146 update did not bring L5 support ,accuracy is the same as before: good, but nowhere near cm levels. So the L5/E5 update is still necessary, but the current climate around Huawei in the West is anything but ideal so who knows.
When dialing in the target for your cruise missile, to make up for jittery GPS just aim a little in front of your target to get maximum splash damage. If you need 'per window' accuracy use Hi-Vision instead, at the last second you will get a notification about helpful suggestions for storm shutters and such on Amazon.

Hi, maybe a missed something, but with "cm" do you mean CyanogenMod on Mate 20 Pro?
I've an S7 Edge but I'm very unhappy about GPS, I'm looking for a smartphone with a better accuracy on localization (mine often it's wrong of ~10 meters).
with my M20P i get indoor >20 satellites, display shows 4m accuracy.
